"In their statement on Friday, NPD warned that the āthe information that was suspected of being breached contained name, email address, phone number, social security number, and mailing address(es).ā It recommended the public to take a number of steps to safeguard their identities, including freezing their credit and putting fraud alerts on their files at big credit bureaus.
The breach came to public awareness after a class-action lawsuit was filed August 1 in U.S. District Court in Florida, which was first reported by Bloomberg Law.
National Public Data did not share how many people were at risk, but hackers, who have been identified as part of the hacking group USDoD, have been offering, for sale, what they claimed were billions of NPD records since April, though the Washington Post reported that āsecurity researchers who looked at the trove said some of the claims were exaggerated.ā"

I haven't seen this on my dash so FYI there was a huge data breach that could have compromised your social security number
You can check if your information was included in the breach here:
They are recommending that you freeze your credit as a precaution. My info was listed in the breach so I just went through the process, and it's very easy. After that, just keep an eye on your bank accounts. That's really all you can do. Be safe everyone!

National Public Data Cyberattack
As many are aware, the recent cyberattack on National Public Data gave criminals access to a treasure trove of personally identifiable information for a large number of consumers. Was Every Americanās Social Security Number Exposed? Why You Shouldnāt Panic Yet
An unsubstantiated viral claim that nearly every Americanās social security number (SSN) was leaked in a massive data breach has spread rapidly this week, following the alleged hack of a background check company named National Public Data. While concerns about identity theft are understandable, experts suggest that the threat may not be as severe as it initially appears.
The compromised data was reportedly listed for sale on the dark web in April for US$3.5 million. The listing was posted by a threat actor known as āUSDoD,ā who claimed to possess the personal information of āthe entire populationā of the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.
The dataset allegedly contains 2.9 billion rows of information, including full names, home addresses, phone numbers, and SSNs. However, this does not necessarily mean it holds the data of 2.9 billion individuals. Additionally, Canadians do not have SSNs; their equivalent is the social insurance number. In the U.K., people have national insurance numbers.

A hackers dream: Every Americans Social Security number 08-14-2024
LOS ANGELES ā About four months after a notorious hacking group claimed to have stolen an extraordinary amount of sensitive personal information from a major data broker, a member of the group has reportedly released most of it for free on an online marketplace for stolen personal data.
The breach, which includes Social Security numbers and other sensitive data
"According to a class-action lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the hacking group USDoD claimed in April to have stolen personal records of 2.9 billion people from National Public Data, which offers personal information to employers, private investigators, staffing agencies and others doing background checks. The group offered in a forum for hackers to sell the data, which included records from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, for $3.5 million, a cybersecurity expert said in a post on X.
The lawsuit was reported by Bloomberg Law.
Last week, a purported member of USDoD identified only as Felice told the hacking forum that they were offering āthe full NPD database,ā according to a screenshot taken by BleepingComputer. The information consists of about 2.7 billion records, each of which includes a personās full name, address, date of birth, Social Security number and phone number, along with alternate names and birth dates, Felice claimed.
National Public Data didnāt respond to a request for comment, nor has it formally notified people about the alleged breach. It has, however, been telling people who contacted it via email that āwe are aware of certain third-party claims about consumer data and are investigating these issues.ā

If you live in Canada, the U.K., or the U.S., you should contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to freeze your credit now. This headline is misleading; potentially everyone in all three countries has had personal info stolen.

A general thing to keep in mind for any public comments submitted to the feds: for your comment to have any impact it needs to be substantive!
The DOT explains in its rulemaking process that "While the number of commenters who support or oppose a particular proposal is important information, the agencyās decision cannot be based on as simple tally of 'votes.'" Commenting "Cars should be designed to be safer for pedestrians and I support this rule change" is not likely to have any effect on the decision. Providing/citing data or studies when expressing your views, such as the well-demonstrated association between SUVs and higher rates of pedestrian fatalities, is substantive!
More information about how to effectively prepare public comments is provided by the DOT here: https://www.transportation.gov/regulations/rulemaking-process#prepare
IF YOU LIVE IN THE US AND WOULD RATHER NOT DIE FROM BEING HIT BY A CAR
please submit a comment on the NHTSA proposal to implement pedestrian safety test requirements for cars and trucks!!
It would finally make manufacturers design vehicles that are safer for pedestrians and cyclists, instead of the massive wall-of-steel front ends that are excessively deadly for no reason. Europe already has rules like this, but unless we comment in approval, they're not going to do anything to halt the increasing pedestrian deaths in our country.
And please share, even if you don't live in the US!
#submit substantive comments y'all#it sucks to have to do research to support your comment#but seriously they basically say they will ignore comments that aren't backed up by data on their website#this also applies to pretty much any public comment period for the feds#like with environmental impact statements under the National Environmental Policy Act

Oh yeah so for my UX design class. Our final project is creating some sort of app that links to a wearable fitness device. Like a fitbit. And my group's doing a lil tamagotchi thing, whatever. It's kind of dumb but this class is kind of dumb anyways. I suck it up and do it regardless so that I can graduate.
Anyways so we actually only came up with this idea on Monday lol. Barely done any work on it. But the guy in our group got a fuck ton of interviews yesterday for it, and thank GOD he did bc GUESS WHAT!!! The "check-in" that we had today that was Supposed to be the TA walking around to talk to groups ended up beinggggg INFORMAL PRESENTATIONS!!!!!!!! And no one was fucking ready for it bc on Monday she'd asked for us to choose between presentations or individual discussions and we chose individual discussions. But I guess she decided to do presentations after all.
And well ok so I have a habit of being a little late to this class every day. It's a 3 hour studio and so long as u get there within 15 mins they're chill about it. And today was extra sucky cause I got RAINED ON like pretty hard. Cold ass rain. My jeans were soaked. And well that sucked pretty hard.
But I walked in to find that they were doing PRESENTATIONS and I was like Aw Fuck. And see the thing is, 2 of my groupmates in that class are always *very* late. Like half an hour to an hour late, if they even show up at all. So I couldn't count on them. And my remaining groupmate is the quiet type, so I couldn't count on her either.
So I was like. Aw, fuck. It's up to me.
Sat there in the 5 or 10 mins I had while other groups were presenting to review the interview results from yesterday (I hadn't even looked at them yet ššš) and then I fuckin gave an informal presentation on the fly about our project that we Totally didn't start working on only 2 days ago (lol). And the thing is. Somehow???? We had the most work done out of the class?????? Most of them hadn't even done interviews yet šššš like this is due on the 2nd and next week is Thanksgiving break šššš there is NOT much time left!!!!!!!
But yeah I was riding that high of carrying that presentation for us. I'm so Fucking good at bullshitting.
#speculation nation#speaking of. i got my grade back for my 3rd essay exam (that i had to stay up most of the night to finish) and i got. full marks again >:]#i am SOOOOO fucking good at bullshitting.#good at public speaking now apparently. wild! i used to have debilitating anxiety about giving presentations.#but college has really done a lot for desensitizing me to it. im still a little amazed at the fact that i gave an hour long presentation#earlier this semester. like after that??? talking for just a few mins in front of a class feels like Nothing.#try talking for an HOUR!!!!!! literally fuckin bonkers insane. massive respect to ppl who do that regularly. i could not.#but that's why im just a com minor instead of a com major ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø#but yeah due to my ability to bullshit we got thru it. wahoo#i also have my data governance group project + presentation. we havent started yet. gonna do that tomorrow.#i was WANTING to discuss it with them on tuesday but Miss Bitch im teamed up with just straight up IGNORED me#class let out 15 mins early so i figured i'd discuss about the work and she just got up and LEFT as i was starting to speak.#and then she has the NERVE to be annoyed that im asking we meet tomorrow to go over shit (DURING class time. but no class is being held)#like girl had u not fucked off like ur life depended on it yesterday we could've already hashed all this out!!!! u did this to yourself!!!!!#anyways yeah i fucking do not like her. she left her empty starbucks cup at her desk too. the fucking disrespect.#but i just need to put up with her for a little longer... the 2 guys in my group are cooperative at least...#but yeah thats a quick rundown of my life recently š i havent been talking on here much lately bc uhhhhh yea im dying lol#the 2 novels and 4th essay exam r for gender communication class. idk i'll get through it#THREE FINAL PROJECTS... essay exam... and 2 novels... within about 2 weeks... lord save my soul......

Israel still blocking aid - Arms Embargo NOW
194 so far! Help us get to 250 signers!
From IMEU on November 1: The Biden administration acknowledged earlier this month that Israel is blocking aid into Gaza in violation of US law. That should have meant an immediate cutoff of weapons. Instead, the weapons are still flowing ā and aid into Gaza has decreased to its lowest level in a year. It is estimated that as many as 62,000 Palestinians in Gaza may have starved to death since last October. The US cannot continue its complicity in these war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The global community recognizes Israelās genocide of Palestinians and erasure of Palestine. The global community recognizes US support of this genocide. We want action immediately.
According to Data For Progress, the majority of America - 56% of Republicans and 86% of Democrats - support a permanent ceasefire. 70% of Democrats support restricting weapons funding to Israel. Are you going to listen to the people? Are you going to center humanity?
President Bidenās administration continues to supply and fund Israel while knowing since October 2023 that Israel has been targeting civilians. Secretary Blinken knew that Israel was blocking aid from entering Gaza and lied about it. This is continued participation in Israelās genocide of Palestinians and a violation of Leahy Law, which prohibits our government from funding foreign forces who are implicated in gross human rights violations, including targeting civilians and deliberately preventing access to humanitarian assistance.
International scholar and lawyer, Francesca Albanese, has documented how Israelās gross human rights violations and war crimes are genocidal acts, including their targeting of hospitals and healthcare workers, targeting journalists and civilians, using starvation as a weapon, etc. Israeli government officials have repeatedly expressed genocidal intent. Sites of learning, culture, and historical memory ā universities, mosques, churches, museums ā have been decimated. The Gaza Strip's ability to produce food and clean water has been severely destroyed by Israeli airstrikes and bulldozers which have razed farms and orchards. People have unearthed mass graves with evidence of torture. As people of conscience, we will not ignore this.
I am demanding you to take immediate steps to stop Israelās genocide of Palestinians and massacres in Lebanon by calling for no more weapons or funding to the Israeli military. I support Senator Sandersā Joint Resolutions of Disapproval to block arms sales to Israel.
The ICJ ruled that Israel should do everything in its power to prevent genocide. Never again means never again for anyone. All people - including Palestinians - deserve to live with freedom and safety which means first stopping this genocide and then ensuring liberation from occupation and apartheid. The liberation and safety of Palestinians, Israelis, Jewish people, Muslim people, and Lebanese people are intertwined. There can only be true safety when we are all free from oppression.
