"In their statement on Friday, NPD warned that the “the information that was suspected of being breached contained name, email address, phone number, social security number, and mailing address(es).” It recommended the public to take a number of steps to safeguard their identities, including freezing their credit and putting fraud alerts on their files at big credit bureaus.
The breach came to public awareness after a class-action lawsuit was filed August 1 in U.S. District Court in Florida, which was first reported by Bloomberg Law.
National Public Data did not share how many people were at risk, but hackers, who have been identified as part of the hacking group USDoD, have been offering, for sale, what they claimed were billions of NPD records since April, though the Washington Post reported that “security researchers who looked at the trove said some of the claims were exaggerated.”"

I haven't seen this on my dash so FYI there was a huge data breach that could have compromised your social security number
You can check if your information was included in the breach here:
They are recommending that you freeze your credit as a precaution. My info was listed in the breach so I just went through the process, and it's very easy. After that, just keep an eye on your bank accounts. That's really all you can do. Be safe everyone!

Was Every American’s Social Security Number Exposed? Why You Shouldn’t Panic Yet
An unsubstantiated viral claim that nearly every American’s social security number (SSN) was leaked in a massive data breach has spread rapidly this week, following the alleged hack of a background check company named National Public Data. While concerns about identity theft are understandable, experts suggest that the threat may not be as severe as it initially appears.
The compromised data was reportedly listed for sale on the dark web in April for US$3.5 million. The listing was posted by a threat actor known as “USDoD,” who claimed to possess the personal information of “the entire population” of the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.
The dataset allegedly contains 2.9 billion rows of information, including full names, home addresses, phone numbers, and SSNs. However, this does not necessarily mean it holds the data of 2.9 billion individuals. Additionally, Canadians do not have SSNs; their equivalent is the social insurance number. In the U.K., people have national insurance numbers.

A hackers dream: Every Americans Social Security number 08-14-2024
LOS ANGELES — About four months after a notorious hacking group claimed to have stolen an extraordinary amount of sensitive personal information from a major data broker, a member of the group has reportedly released most of it for free on an online marketplace for stolen personal data.
The breach, which includes Social Security numbers and other sensitive data
"According to a class-action lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the hacking group USDoD claimed in April to have stolen personal records of 2.9 billion people from National Public Data, which offers personal information to employers, private investigators, staffing agencies and others doing background checks. The group offered in a forum for hackers to sell the data, which included records from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, for $3.5 million, a cybersecurity expert said in a post on X.
The lawsuit was reported by Bloomberg Law.
Last week, a purported member of USDoD identified only as Felice told the hacking forum that they were offering “the full NPD database,” according to a screenshot taken by BleepingComputer. The information consists of about 2.7 billion records, each of which includes a person’s full name, address, date of birth, Social Security number and phone number, along with alternate names and birth dates, Felice claimed.
National Public Data didn’t respond to a request for comment, nor has it formally notified people about the alleged breach. It has, however, been telling people who contacted it via email that “we are aware of certain third-party claims about consumer data and are investigating these issues.”

If you live in Canada, the U.K., or the U.S., you should contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to freeze your credit now. This headline is misleading; potentially everyone in all three countries has had personal info stolen.

A general thing to keep in mind for any public comments submitted to the feds: for your comment to have any impact it needs to be substantive!
The DOT explains in its rulemaking process that "While the number of commenters who support or oppose a particular proposal is important information, the agency’s decision cannot be based on as simple tally of 'votes.'" Commenting "Cars should be designed to be safer for pedestrians and I support this rule change" is not likely to have any effect on the decision. Providing/citing data or studies when expressing your views, such as the well-demonstrated association between SUVs and higher rates of pedestrian fatalities, is substantive!
More information about how to effectively prepare public comments is provided by the DOT here: https://www.transportation.gov/regulations/rulemaking-process#prepare
IF YOU LIVE IN THE US AND WOULD RATHER NOT DIE FROM BEING HIT BY A CAR
please submit a comment on the NHTSA proposal to implement pedestrian safety test requirements for cars and trucks!!
It would finally make manufacturers design vehicles that are safer for pedestrians and cyclists, instead of the massive wall-of-steel front ends that are excessively deadly for no reason. Europe already has rules like this, but unless we comment in approval, they're not going to do anything to halt the increasing pedestrian deaths in our country.
And please share, even if you don't live in the US!
#submit substantive comments y'all#it sucks to have to do research to support your comment#but seriously they basically say they will ignore comments that aren't backed up by data on their website#this also applies to pretty much any public comment period for the feds#like with environmental impact statements under the National Environmental Policy Act

Holy shit holy shit holy Schist!!!!!
A hydrothermal explosion happened Yellowstone!! And I’m alive to see it! I wish I was there.
From USGS Facebook:
A small hydrothermal explosion occurred in Yellowstone National Park today (July 23, 2024) around 10:00 AM MST in the Biscuit Basin thermal area, about 2.1 miles (3.5 km) northwest of Old Faithful. Numerous videos of the event were recorded by visitors. The boardwalk was damaged, but there were no reports of injury. The explosion appears to have originated near Black Diamond Pool.
Biscuit Basin, including the parking lot and boardwalks, are temporary closed for visitor safety. The Grand Loop road remains open. Yellowstone National Park geologists are investigating the event.
Hydrothermal explosions occur when water suddenly flashes to steam underground, and they are relatively common in Yellowstone. For example, Porkchop Geyser, in Norris Geyser Basin, experienced an explosion in 1989, and a small event in Norris Geyser Basin was recorded by monitoring equipment on April 15, 2024. An explosion similar to that of today also occurred in Biscuit Basin on May 17, 2009.
More information about hydrothermal explosions is available at https://www.usgs.gov/observatories/yvo/news/hydrothermal-explosions-yellowstone-national-park.
Monitoring data show no changes in the Yellowstone region. Today’s explosion does not reflect activity within volcanic system, which remains at normal background levels of activity. Hydrothermal explosions like that of today are not a sign of impending volcanic eruptions, and they are not caused by magma rising towards the surface.
Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
The Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO) provides long-term monitoring of volcanic and earthquake activity in the Yellowstone National Park region. Yellowstone is the site of the largest and most diverse collection of natural thermal features in the world and the first National Park. YVO is one of the five USGS Volcano Observatories that monitor volcanoes within the United States for science and public safety.

Israel still blocking aid - Arms Embargo NOW
194 so far! Help us get to 250 signers!
From IMEU on November 1: The Biden administration acknowledged earlier this month that Israel is blocking aid into Gaza in violation of US law. That should have meant an immediate cutoff of weapons. Instead, the weapons are still flowing — and aid into Gaza has decreased to its lowest level in a year. It is estimated that as many as 62,000 Palestinians in Gaza may have starved to death since last October. The US cannot continue its complicity in these war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The global community recognizes Israel’s genocide of Palestinians and erasure of Palestine. The global community recognizes US support of this genocide. We want action immediately.
According to Data For Progress, the majority of America - 56% of Republicans and 86% of Democrats - support a permanent ceasefire. 70% of Democrats support restricting weapons funding to Israel. Are you going to listen to the people? Are you going to center humanity?
President Biden’s administration continues to supply and fund Israel while knowing since October 2023 that Israel has been targeting civilians. Secretary Blinken knew that Israel was blocking aid from entering Gaza and lied about it. This is continued participation in Israel’s genocide of Palestinians and a violation of Leahy Law, which prohibits our government from funding foreign forces who are implicated in gross human rights violations, including targeting civilians and deliberately preventing access to humanitarian assistance.
International scholar and lawyer, Francesca Albanese, has documented how Israel’s gross human rights violations and war crimes are genocidal acts, including their targeting of hospitals and healthcare workers, targeting journalists and civilians, using starvation as a weapon, etc. Israeli government officials have repeatedly expressed genocidal intent. Sites of learning, culture, and historical memory — universities, mosques, churches, museums — have been decimated. The Gaza Strip's ability to produce food and clean water has been severely destroyed by Israeli airstrikes and bulldozers which have razed farms and orchards. People have unearthed mass graves with evidence of torture. As people of conscience, we will not ignore this.
I am demanding you to take immediate steps to stop Israel’s genocide of Palestinians and massacres in Lebanon by calling for no more weapons or funding to the Israeli military. I support Senator Sanders’ Joint Resolutions of Disapproval to block arms sales to Israel.
The ICJ ruled that Israel should do everything in its power to prevent genocide. Never again means never again for anyone. All people - including Palestinians - deserve to live with freedom and safety which means first stopping this genocide and then ensuring liberation from occupation and apartheid. The liberation and safety of Palestinians, Israelis, Jewish people, Muslim people, and Lebanese people are intertwined. There can only be true safety when we are all free from oppression.
