Richard Woodman
Writer who drew on his own experience at sea in a series of novels and historical works about the British merchant navy
“The end was anticlimax. We slipped home unnoticed. Britain turned no hair at our arrival, as just as she has turned no hair at our extinction.” When Richard Woodman published Voyage East in 1988, he knew that the mercantile world depicted within it, which he had joined aged 16, was gone.
The first-person novel – which never reads like fiction – describes the voyage of a cargo liner carrying goods and passengers from Liverpool to Singapore, Hong Kong, Kobe and Shanghai in the mid-1960s. There is a moment, off the coast of Borneo, when the captain sees a vessel with half a dozen grey aluminium boxes on her foredeck: “What the devil are they?” he asks the pilot. “‘They’re containers, Captain,’ the Pilot replied, and no one on the bridge heard the sentence of death pronounced upon us.”
Woodman, who has died aged 80, became the memorialist of the merchant fleets. Between 2008 and 2016 he wrote the history of the British merchant navy in five volumes, followed by A Low Set of Blackguards, a two-volume history (2016-17) of the East India Company.
His outstanding contribution came through his three second world war convoy histories: Arctic Convoys (1994), Malta Convoys (2000) and The Real Cruel Sea (2005). These are works of passion, based on experience and scrupulous research.
The loss of life among merchant seamen was proportionately greater than in any of the armed services and the recognition they received far less. From the beginning of the war a seafarer’s pay was stopped the minute his ship was sunk. “Time spent fighting for his life on a float or lifeboat was an unpaid excursion,” wrote Woodman.
While Winston Churchill acknowledged the crucial importance of the Battle of the Atlantic to national survival, it was not until 2012 that those who had served in the Arctic convoys, and had taken the highest casualties of all, were retrospectively honoured.
Born in north London, Richard was the elder son of Rosalie (nee Cann) and Douglas Woodman, a civil service administrator. Though he was far from the sea, his imagination was captured by the works of Arthur Ransome, Daniel Defoe, RM Ballantyne and Alan Villiers, and his enthusiasm nurtured by Sea Scout membership.
He was the youngest member of the Sea Scout crew that sailed the ex-German yawl Nordwind in the 1960 Tall Ships race and, despite failing all but two of his O-levels, he was accepted as an indentured apprentice with the Alfred Holt (Blue Funnel) line in 1960.
His first long trip to Australia came as a midshipman on the SS Glenarty, returning via the US: “I had been round the world before I would have been allowed inside a British pub.” Life on board ship took place in an uncompromising, all-male environment: the almost compulsory swearing, drinking and sexist banter encouraged the development of “a carapace behind which we hid our private selves”.
Woodman responded eagerly to the hands-on education in seamanship and navigation, developed his writing and sketching through the log-keeping and read his way through the excellent ships’ libraries provided by the Marine Society. He completed his four-year apprenticeship and gained his second mate’s certificate. He was, however, in love and hated saying goodbye to his girlfriend, Christine Hite, an art student, for many months at a time.
He left Blue Funnel in the mid-1960s and went to work for the Ocean Weather Service, where he discovered how vicious the North Atlantic winter weather systems could be – and how pitilessly an ex-second world war corvette would roll. Fortunately it was not long before a temporary position became available with Trinity House, the corporation charged with the maintenance of navigation marks around England, Wales and the Channel Islands.
The position became permanent; he and Christine married in 1969 and settled in Harwich, Essex, near the Trinity House east coast depot, and he served the corporation for most of the rest of his life.
The work at sea was varied, challenging, sometimes dangerous. Precise navigation, seamanship and attention to detail were essential qualities, but Woodman also found time to write. His first novel, The Eye of the Fleet, was published in 1981. This introduced a series of 14 adventures featuring the young Nathaniel Drinkwater, a hero somewhat in the Horatio Hornblower mode but bearing the unmistakable stamp of a writer who was also a sailor.
Despite his professional career being in motorised vessels, Woodman loved traditional gaff-rigged yachts, particularly his own Kestrel and then Andromeda, in which he and Christine explored the east coast rivers and beyond. The action of his nautical novels often turns on neat, seamanlike manoeuvres as well as including varied and closely observed seascapes.
His productivity was astonishing. He often wrote two or three novels a year and soon added non-fiction to his output. When he became captain of Trinity House Vessel Patricia, he achieved this by having two desks, one from which he could conduct official business, the other hidden behind a door, with a page from the work in progress always ready in the typewriter.
Meanwhile, in his job he was extremely focused, conscientious and painstaking. Although some remember him as being of the “old school”, Jill Kernick, the first woman in almost 500 years to work at sea for Trinity House, credits him with helping her break through traditional barriers in the early 80s.
In 1997 Woodman retired to write full time, but was soon elected a Younger Brother of Trinity House, and then an Elder Brother, the first time a former employee was accorded this honour. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2003 but there was no let-up in his work rate. His last completed novel, A River in Borneo (2022), harks back to 60s Indonesia but sets its final scene in a Colchester hospice.
He is survived by Christine and their children, Abigail and Edward, and grandson, Arlo.
🔔 Richard Martin Woodman, master mariner and author, born 10 March 1944; died 2 October 2024

Henny ranks Eurovision 2023 - before the show
i’m kinda late with this this year, i admit. reasons? I guess I can say i’ve been busy, but it’s not all, truth is i’m not that engaged about this year actually... of course there are songs i love, but it’s not a year where i struggle to make a top 10 you know? anyway. enough negativity. let’s take a look, shall we? oh and please not that the songs are not in a certain order within each category.
category: can’t we have two winners please?
Sweden - yeah i’m in my patriotic era again. this is euphoria chapter two, in a good way, and it’d be so cool if she won purely from a statistic point of view... howEVER........
Finland - wouldn’t it just be great with a winner that was... a little rough around the edges? dirty, gritty, would scare your grandma only to later make her nod and say it’s quite a bop afterall? and it’d be the proper reward for finland who has brought their absolut a-game to their national final for the past few years - even though they’ve in my opinion picked the wrong winner from it. until this year that is. yeah, i think i’d like that.
category: added to my playlist and played frequently
Norway - mgp really stepped up their game as well this year and sometimes i even question if queen of kings is my winner from it (there’s tresko, ekko inni meg, love you in a dream etc etc) but my god it just goes so hard doesn’t it? although WHEN are they putting the version with the intro on spotify?? WHEN!!
Slovenia - you know sometimes i forget carpe diem is a eurovision entry because it just sounds like something i’d hear from an average band in my library?? idk how else to describe it. i just love it. and i love THEM. bojan’s charisma is.... sigh
Austria - it bops and it’s so CLEVER i love it
Serbia - hello??? i’m obsessed
Portugal - as soon as the beat kicked in on my first listen i was hooked. it’s flawless. and it’s the first portugese entry i’ve been really engaged in since.... uh... i started watching?? obviously i’ve liked entries from them but i haven’t really cared. this time i do.
Czechia - go ladies go!! i really hope this will be as epic on stage as in the mv. please please please
Malta - this is a sort of recent obsession, i didn’t really get it right after the nf, so we’ll see how long this lasts but i’m always having fun listening to it
category: also in my playlist but not as frequent
Estonia - it’s beautiful! but maybe not so original. my winner of eesti laul was meelik /:
Switzerland - i actually don’t mind the lyrics and i love the chord intervals in the chorus
Croatia - chaotic fun. and sticks to your brain like glue. mamaaaa kupila traktora... SC!
United Kingdom - this song was like a bubble gum. lovely and fun the first few listens but i got tired of it kinda quickly, sadly
category: i can recognize the talent here but i guess it’s just not for me?
Latvia - i’ve seen so many people hyping this and everytime i listen it’s like yeah this is good! and then i don’t feel the urge to listen again
Spain - yeah the performance was captivating but... that’s where it ends for me
Italy - it’s nothing Wrong with the song itself but it didn’t grab me and i had so many other options from sanremo i’d rather see here than Another Male Italian Ballad and this time by a returning artist on top of it so uhhhh yeah
France - i’ve listened to la zarra before the contest so i had some hopes for her and they were not fulfilled )): i like the disco beat and the last chorus - because that’s when everything finally reaches a fullness it should have reached WAY earlier in the song. do you feel me?
Moldova - you know i think i just need a few more listens to this and i’ll get around to it
Ukraine - don’t have much to say about it but it’s alright!
Georgia - this is that kind of song that you only hear in eurovision but when you do you absolutely love it and she does have very impressive vocals, i gotta say
category: they’re fine i guess/i don’t care!!!!!!/no that’s definitely not for me
Belgium - song is kinda catchy i’m ngl. but i cannnnnNOT cope with his styling.
Azerbaijan - it’s cute! that’s about it
Albania - i’ve listened to this exactly once and it was alright but nothing core shaking you know?
Netherlands - this one i think is alright everytime i hear it and then i immediately forget how it goes after it’s done. i couldn’t sing it back to you know matter how i tried honestly
Denmark - yeah it’s fine
Cyprus - i don’t caaaare i don’t care it’s alright but i don’t caaare
Lithuania - ehhhhh why couldn’t we have had beatrich instead ):
Germany - i guess i see why people like it but yeah no this is Not my thing at all
Australia - same with this
Armenia - this could go in the other category above here but.. i don’t like it enough actually
Iceland - yeah no. i don’t get it
Greece - for the love of god couldn’t someone have paired him up with an experienced songwriter and/or producer here because there are many great ideas but they just sound like a mess? it sounds so unfinished?? and i think i really would’ve liked this if it just sounded more... polished. worked on.
Israel - again a mess of a song with too many ideas in it and a very weird build. can’t get around to it
category: good god no
Ireland - someone asked an ai to write the most generic song ever and this is what we got
Romania - dude. bro. no.
Poland - this could’ve been a very basic but somewhat ok entry had there just not been the whole story with how it was picked and what kind of person she is
San Marino - this song feels like a threat. and WHAT is with the singer’s posture?? STAND UP STRAIGHT jesus christ
and there we have it! how much do we agree?

May 11th, 2024 UN Vote on “The Admission of New Members to the United Nations” (State of Palestine) A/RES/ES-10/23
Yes: 143 | No: 9 | Abstentions: 25 | Non-Voting: 16 | Total voting membership: 193
While this vote does not grant Palestine full membership into the United Nations, there are a few promising wins:
143 members voted yes! That's 3/4ths of the United Nations!
Palestine will have observer status and be able to (during the new session in September) draft, propose, and vote on agenda items. The only other non-full member with this status is the Holy See (The Vatican!)
11 of the 15 Security Council members voted YES! This is huge because the Security Council can veto resolutions.
3 of the 5 Permanent Security Council members voted YES and one abstained, leaving the United States as the only permanent member to vote no. Other major world powers are not backing the US.

Four Books I have written in the Deep State and for now can be downloaded for free.
The Great Treason: High and Petite Treason in the USA
Extensive non-fiction that shows the 100 year history of the espionage covert Special Relationship between England and the USA that led in to the Kennedy Curse and how the Donegan (my own and other families secretly were tied to that history under Hidden Identities and Underground Railroads during several world wars.
https://archive.org/download/genoracketeering_202001/GreatTreason.epub
Pillory: Tools and Fools of the USA
A fictional book as a speculative simulation between the Donegan's, Kennedy family, and others in Boston and how because of the Donegan factual history in that matter led to a Mockingbird pillory of me by the CIA, FBI, and others when my and other evidence on the JFK and RFK and other murders should not be retaliated against or conspired against by the very agencies this information should be useful to in those agencies and the US sovereign self-interest. In the fictional version RFK escapes assassination and we will learn of the underlying connection between Marilyn Monroe and Dysgraphic Albert Einstein.
https://archive.org/download/genoracketeering_202001/What.epub
Ted L. Gunderson An Edited and Approving Biographical Anthology of his Life and Works
Ted Gunderson was the right-hand man to RFK fighting the mafia that was run by Vice President Richard Nixon in the 1946 to 1960 years. As the Kennedy's gained power in the USA and world global dirty business operations subverted the USA and other nations. JFK and RFK attempted to shut down the CIA but it was too globally located to respond to the US Presidency and and held too much allegiance from British trained and supported Espionage in the USA operating as the US Government but through NGOs that again were difficult to control from inside the US Government. It would be comparable to NASA trying to control a long gone satellite past its available connections back to Earth.

Written by the Right Hand: The Right Hand Operatives of the Cabal and the Dangerous Job They Undertook of Exposing its Secrets
Many leakers of the secrets of the JFK history have come forward. Deep State Cabal range from Mocking them to assassinating them to denying the truth of revelations but history is being continuously revised as theories Lee Harvey Oswald was a patsy are gaining growing support. The patriots fighting against Free Masonry, Vatican history, Knights of Malta, Council on Foreign Relations, British Pilgrim Society all experience media abuse of their theories find any publicity at all but these patriots still speak out at the risk of their lives and leave death-bed statements.

The Press Secretary Office of The Holy See of Hinduism Responds to Mr. Shantanu Guharay, Asia Editor, Central European News, Uk; Columnist, Money Control, Bloomberg Quint
Dear Shantanu Guharay, Thank you for your inquiry about the United States of Kailasa. We appreciate your interest in learning more about the United States of Kailasa - The Ancient Enlightened Hindu Civilisational Nation and are happy to answer your questions. Please find below the answers to the questions that you had asked. Q: What is the United States of Kailasa (USK)? Can you explain its location, its total population and a sample copy of the passports issued by your government? A: Kailasa is a revival of the ancient enlightened Hindu civilizational nation, operating through a group of NGOs in multiple countries across the world. It was established much in the spirit of a country like the Sovereign Order of Malta, a borderless service oriented nation. KAILASA has more than 7 million e-passport applications. E-Citizenship of the United States of KAILASA is open to all born, practicing and aspiring Hindus worldwide, who will receive an E-Citizen ID upon successful application. This ID will enable you to access various free humanitarian and spiritual services offered by KAILASA. There are millions of Hindus including those in India who have signed up and benefited from our E-Citizenship service. You can sign up to be an E-citizen from this link. https://gov.koogle.sk/sign-up/. Q: What is your constitution? What is your economic system? What is the colour of your flag? And who is the director of the Reserve Bank of Kailasa? A: KAILASA stands for all great values of Ancient Hindu Enlightened Civilization, enshrined in the constitution of KAILASA. The Vedas and the Agamas are the constitution of Kailasa. The Bhagavad Gita is the preamble to the constitution of KAILASA. Dharma Shastras are the jurisprudence of KAILASA. Kailasa’s flag is hoisted and its national anthem (https://kailaasa.org/about/national-anthem/) is played during Kailasa’s traditional and official gatherings. More about the significance of the national flag of Kailasa can be found at https://gov.shrikailasa.org/about/flag-and-emblem. Q: Under which laws was this nation, USK, set up? And when? A: The Vedas and the Agamas are the constitution of Kailasa. The Bhagavad Gita is the preamble to the constitution of KAILASA and the Dharma Shastras are the jurisprudence of KAILASA. It is governed by the Sovereign Order of KAILASA, the continuation of the oldest Governing Body for Hinduism. The order is inclusive of people from all walks of life and provides various options to living and radiating enlightenment for all individuals, beyond age, marital status, race, color, or any other background and belief system. The Order is organized through is a consortium of multiple micronations, educational institutions including Hindu universities and school (gurukul), spiritual embassies, temples, temple monastery complexes, nunneries, food banks (Annamandir), animal shelters (Goshala), libraries (Jnanalaya), organic agriculture. KAILASA’s vision and mission is enlightened living for all of humanity which is rooted in the fundamental principle of Advaita or Oneness – through which global peace can be achieved. Q: What does Swami Nithyananda have to say against charges of sexual harassment levelled against him? Under the Indian law, isn't he then a fugitive who should return to India and face trial? A: The allegations are false. The same false victims filed the same false charges in the US. But the US courts exonerated SPH, dismissed the case in favor of SPH and in turn fined the false victims to a tune of nearly a million dollars. The Supreme Pontiff of Hinduism was proven innocent by the California (USA) Court on April 8, 2013 and the Ohio federal court on August 12, 2014. The courts ruled in favor of the SPH and fined the false victims nearly one million dollars in fines. This is also recognized by Mr. Geoffrey Robertson, QC stating: “Both A and B’s claims against PN were dismissed in US cases, with costs and, in A’s case, with damages. Further evidence emerged in the US proceedings to show that the allegations were false.” Many prominent human rights advocates have given independent reports and legal opinions attesting this. Among them is world renowned King’s Counsel from UK Mr. Geoffrey Robertson. This is False. SPH is not a fugitive. There is no notice issued by Interpol for SPH. Interpol has rejected any requests to issue any notices for him based on evidence that was presented to them. The world renowned human rights advocate and King’s Counsel from UK Mr. Geoffrey Robertson after thorough investigation, says in this report about the persecution that “He did not “jump bail” but was out on bail when he left India as he was entitled to do, and has remained abroad in order to seek asylum because he claims a well-founded fear of persecution.” The SPH is a persecuted individual whose basic rights were denied. In 2018, the passport authorities did not renew the SPH’s passport even though he is a born Indian citizen and Indian Macourt ordered them to do so. The SPH even appeared in person and submitted the required documents to renew His passport. Further, innumerable attempts were made on the life of the SPH. For all these reasons he was moved to a safe place by His disciples and followers. Q: What is the current designation of Swami Nithyananda in USK? He calls himself a self-acclaimed godman? What does that mean? Does he have healing powers? A: The SPH is not a self-styled godman. The SPH was born in the family where the Supreme Pontiffs of Thondaimandala Adheenam are chosen. He was identified as an incarnation by traditional Hindu masters and authorities as per Hinduism just like the Dalai Lama is recognized in Buddhism. The SPH's family has a longstanding history of involvement with the administration of the Thiruvannamalai temple and Thondaimandalam Adheenam. The SPH’s birth family has contributed many administrators and Supreme Pontiff’s to Thondai Mandala Adheenam in South India. As you can see from the SPH’s family tree and records, his family held positions of Supreme Pontiffs (Guru Maha Sannidhanams) to Thondaimandala Adheenam for over 11 consecutive generations, as hereditary lineage. The SPH was identified as an incarnation at early childhood by His Predecessors, initiated at the age of 3, groomed, coronated and anointed as the Supreme Pontiff of Hinduism and declared as the “Jagat Guru Mahasannidhanam” (The Supreme Pontiff of Hinduism) as per the customs and traditions of Hinduism by spiritual heads of multiple traditional Hindu samasthanas and competent traditional Hindu authorities who have come in established lineages. The foundation of the SPH’s teachings is rooted in the core ancient scriptures of Hinduism. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxL7HAI_Y84 The declaration as the SPH was done in an elaborate traditional ceremony with the fire rituals and other Hindu ceremonies over a 3-day period, which was attended by spiritual heads across India culminating in unanimous declaration of the SPH recognizing him as the living incarnation of Paramashiva, the Primordial Divinity as per Hinduism Q: What does USK stand for? Is it for Hindus? If that be the case, countries like India have a much larger population of Hindus, right? So what does USK aim to achieve? A: Kailasa is a revival of the ancient enlightened Hindu civilizational nation, operating through NGOs. It was established much in the spirit of a country like the Sovereign Order of Malta, a borderless service oriented nation. In many countries across the world, people inspired by the SPH have started organizations to share his teachings. Its vision is “Living Enlightenment for all” leading to global peace irrespective of any external differences including gender, race, nationality, color, caste, creed, etc. It is established on the principle of “Oneness” (“Advaita” in Sanskrit). Please visit www.kailaasa.org for further information. Q: Does the USK propagate total vegetarianism? A: Kailasa stands for non violence. Killing animals for food or any other purpose is not morally right as per Hindu principles which are followed by Kailasa. Kailasa through its International Humanitarian Agency RED OM has served millions of free organic vegetarian sattvic meal through its 16000 outlets around the globe for over 30 years and strives to educate and inspire humanity to adopt a sattvic, vegetarian-based lifestyle to attain the true purpose of human life - Living Enlightenment through well laid out scientific and vedagamic truths. We invite you to see many contributions of Kailasa on zero hunger, vegetarianism, organic agriculture. Q: Is the USK a nation or a commune like the one Bhagwan Rajneesh had set up in the United States? The USK says it is a nation without borders created by dispossessed Hindus who lost the right to practice Hinduism authentically in their own countries. Kindly explain. A: We are a revival of the ancient Hindu enlightened civilizational nation and operate through a group of NGOs, operating from multiple countries across the world. It was established much in the spirit of a country like the Sovereign Order of Malta, a borderless service oriented nation. Please visit www.kailaasa.org for further information. Q: What was the rationale behind sending a team from the USK to the United Nations in Geneva? Was the delegation meant to speak at the UN? Or was it a stunt? A: On February 22, 2023 at the 84th session of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and on February 24, 2023 at a discussion regarding the General Comment on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and Sustainable Development at the United Nations in Geneva, a delegation of women from the United States of KAILASA presented a comprehensive report shedding light on the centuries of ethnocide of Hindu Women, Cultural Genocide of Female Monastic Orders, and disempowerment of women via false representation of Hinduism. We took this opportunity to be the voice for Hindu persecution and we touched briefly on the persecution of SPH and Kailasa. Q: How will the USK handle global warming? A: The first and foremost goal of the International Humanitarian Agency GREEN OM is a healthy life enhancing environment, with efficient ecological preservation and biodiversity conservation. Hindus worship trees and animals and they are all part of our ecosystem. Kailasa’s principle of non violence (ahimsa) and vegetarianism, and reforestation are the two rudimentary solutions for humanity. Kailasa’s mega flagship project “Ishanya”, launched by SPH is another massive global humanitarian project to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gasses. Repair, reuse and recycle have always been the functional principle of Kailasa for the last 27 years, and “ Ishanya” is a consolidated effort to unite the world and work together for a better world. Buying fewer new things will reduce carbon emissions and cut down on waste. We invite you to see Kailasa’s contributions in combating global warming. Q: So would it be fair to call the USK a fictional country? A: We are a revival of the ancient Hindu enlightened civilizational nation and operate through a group of NGOs, operating from multiple countries across the world. It was established much in the spirit of a country like the Sovereign Order of Malta, a borderless service oriented nation. Please visit www.kailaasa.org for further information. What's your favorite thing/memory from Malta. (Also, Black family trip to Malta when lmao?)
My favourite memories from Malta:
Lazy summer days spent at a friend's poolside.
The time the little group of foreigners I was a part of in school banded together to hold our own little Christmas party because we were all going home before the official school one. We each brought a dish from home (I made Lancashire parkin) and skipped a lesson to hang out in an empty classroom, eat and play Christmas songs.
Daily rooftop BBQs at my in-laws' house because for 3 months of the year it is too unbearably hot to cook and eat inside.
This ask has been lurking in my inbox for so ridiculously long because I cannot get over how much I love the idea of the Blacks on holiday in Malta.
Orion certainly orchestrated the trip based on Malta's rich history. He thinks he's really pushed the boat out and tried to be a "cool dad" by organising a holiday and doesn't understand why Sirius is less than enthusiastic about being dragged from one magical Neolithic heritage site to another. Knights of St. John fanboy who was far more excited than anyone has any right to be about visiting the Inquisitor's Palace.
At least Regulus is more appreciative of the island's rich history, although there was a brief, rare moment of defiance when he tried to protest against being made to leave the National Library in Valletta after three hours. Poor boy would be perfectly happy to stay hidden away in the cool halls pouring over ancient texts, his porcelain skin safe from the sun.
Walburga is less than impressed with food on offer. Rabbit stew, ross il-forn and timpana are just too rich for her liking, especially in this heat. She's thought she was safer with the seafood options but even the octopus is presented stirred into rich spaghetti sauce! She survives on meagre rations of Maltese bread and olives for most of the trip. Sirius has attempted to tell her that she might be in a better mood if she weren't dressed in a floor-length black Victorian gown in the middle of the Mediterranean August, but she point-blank ignored him and simply ordered Kreacher to fan harder.
Sirius is certain that Malta would be a whole lot more fun without the constraints of his family. He's desperate to sneak away and explore the rowdy-sounding village festa celebrations which fill the air with fireworks every night or to experience the muggle bars of Paceville, but his father has been annoyingly diligent at ensuring their days are filled with far more "suitable" cultural excursions with scarcely an un-scheduled minute in which he might slip away. Attempts to persuade his father that the festas count as cultural excursions due to their religious origin go unheard.

What would be some hobbies of the old guards ?
People have been having fun for centuries, only limited by their surroundings. Of course, a life of travelling to fight in wars is not very conducive to collecting belongings, so I like to think that the oldest members had less material-dependent hobbies. In the way that the younger members all seem to like reading to some extent, I think the older members loved singing and reciting epics, especially if they were involved in them. Besides these, I’ve gone and given them a “personality” and matched up three relatively correctly-aged activities that they might have picked up when they were younger.
Lykon aka the Practical Hobbyist: wrestling (which we know goes back 15,000 years) especially with Quynh who taught him northern Vietnamese styles called vật cổ truyền, clay sculpting (an old and respectable art, can be for useful things), and blade-smithing (making and repairing their own weapons was important because pre-Iron and early Iron was prone to damage)
Bonus: board games simply because of how novel they must have been ~3,000 years into life (the earliest we’ve found was from ~3100 BCE) and why not pick up the games of Senet and Mehen from Ancient Egypt?
Andy aka the Adrenaline Junky: horseback racing and eventually chariot racing (which is famous for being bloody) because horse domestication was incredibly important to the steppe nomads, free-hand mountain climbing because she loves the views, and eventually got into fishermen’s jousting aka water jousting (which is what it sounds like: knock your opponent into the water) in Ancient Egypt (where people usually drowned or were maimed by crocodiles/hippos)
Bonus: Knattleikr, an all-day full-contact ball game invented by the Icelandic Vikings which involved hitting a heavy ball with a stick (or your hands), which she’s really sad that no one knows how to play anymore
Quynh aka the Eclectic: sailing (she can make a mean thung-chai or coracale ten different ways) which was crucial in southern modern-day Vietnam, falconry that she picked up in ancient Mesopotamia (~2000 BCE) because it was cool, and what we now would call gymnastics when the Guard traveled in Ancient Greece (and then later the Roman Empire) at first as a battle skill but then later for fun
Bonus: woomera/atlatl or spear-throwing, which she could have picked up from the First-Nations Australians (aside: “aborigines” is disfavored by the indegenous groups because of the colonial implications) or various Central American indigenous groups because bows and arrows are cool but atlatl/hul'che/woomera were both faster and traveled farther
Nicky aka the Monastic Lifestyle Lover: gardening and animal-husbandry because “his heart overflows with kindness” = takes care of baby animals, debating philosophy especially with the Love of His Life and especially if he can read (boy is he in for a surprise with the libraries of the Islamic Golden Age), and leather-crafting that starts as a chore and grows into an artistic passion (he made Andy’s arm braces)
Bonus: he’s been working on his poetry after a few centuries of Joe wooing him with his skills (he’s not great at it, but Joe loves it)
Joe aka the Artist: traditional Islamic arts of poetry, calligraphy, and painting/sketching, picked up goldsmithing (which is actually any precious metal) at some point to make wedding bands but found out he really loved it, fell in love with performing arts (mostly theater) at some point and may or may not have been cast as Othello in one of the first performances
Bonus: wrestling (did you see that bear hug at the beginning of the film?) which reminds Andy and Quynh of Lykon who loved it just as much so they encourage it all the time
Booker aka the Insecure Eclectic: reading and collecting antique books especially if they’re older than him (age inadequacy issues amiright?), playing around with explosives especially once dynamite gets invented (1867) and he doesn’t have to worry about setting his clothes on fire with gunpowder, using and collecting “modern technology” like owning one of the first light-bulbs or telephones which everyone else kinda laughs at but Nile thinks is very cool
Bonus: he made the other three teach him the basics of archery and sword-fighting for the novelty but found out that he LOVES Andy’s labrys when he gets the opportunity (though axe-throwing is a good second choice)
Nile aka the Millenial: making playlists for every mood and occasion (she has one for each the others that she puts on when she misses one of them when they split up), video games which she starts collecting once she realizes that it’s going to be difficult to find an x-box or wii in 200 years, and one-on-one pick-up basketball which reminds her of growing up with her brother
Bonus: once she’s come to terms with what it means to be immortal, she decides to pick up fire performing because it both awed and terrified her when she was mortal (and Booker is a bad influence with explosives)...Nicky is still mad about what she did to the garden at the Malta safehouse when she was still learning
