sweet and right and merciful (c.s)
summary:
(A STARRING ROLE SPIN-OFF) Choi San deals with the mortifying ordeal of falling in love.
playlist (tba) // my main masterlist // moodboard (tba)//click to donate to Palestine
notes; i bet you thought you'd seen the last of both me and sr!san well you're wrong! tell me if you want to be added to the taglist
snippet;
As he didn't have a disgustingly large amount of generational wealth to back him up nor parents who dabbled in political meddling and occasional blackmail like some of his peers, San always knew that he would have to fight tooth and nail for his spot in the world.
This would seem fairly overdramatic if all he was seeking out of life was a stable job and paid bills, of course: he was, after all, the son of a middle school teacher and a man that had several jobs which he never did right because hey, they never had much so San should've been satisfied with anything.
Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how one would look at it), Choi San was too ambitious for his own good. Having been born and raised in the small town of Namhae which was nothing more than an old supermarket some (nobody under the age of fifty) considered a shopping mall and a small beach - the moment he left for college, he swore that he'd never be back there again for nothing more but the holidays. And simply leaving Namhae wasn't enough, no, you see San's goal was money, more money than he would ever need. Bitterness could be considered a man's biggest motivator to get something done and spending his childhood and early adolescence watching his mother work day and night to make sure the bills are paid just for no money to be left spare sure did make San bitter. Call him shallow and materialistic but to San, money most definitely could buy some happiness.
And so, with that thought in mind (placed by no-one else but himself) since the tender age of twelve when he first visited Seoul for a football game and saw what exactly he's been missing out on living in Namhae, San poured everything he had into his studies until he landed a scholarship for Seoul National University in the field of Electrical Engineering. He had been strategic in his choice of career. Electrical engineering required just enough work and brains for it to be considered a lucrative degree and used just enough engineering principles to keep him interested in the job.
And San was excellent at his job. He was quick and efficient, precise and absolutely never wrong. Getting hired to work at one of South Korea's most renowned automobile manufacturing companies not long after he got his degree didn't come as a surprise to no-one. He was competent. The problem with competence and climbing the business ladder though was that it was rewarded with increasingly complex projects almost every month.
And so, our opening scene: A Thursday morning, sometime in January. Amidst the white cubicles on the third floor of Zenith Motor Company, Mr. Kim was doling out new projects to his top engineers with a vengeance.
"Jung, this ones for you," He smacks Jaehyun over the head with the folder before dropping it unceremoniously on his desk, "And try not to get doughnut smudges all over this one."
"Byun, you're continuing the testing from last month." Jaebum nods his head, eyes barely moving from the computer screen in front of him. Mr. Kim continues with an eye roll, "Lim, new model that needs surveillance."
He continues down the room throwing down casefiles as he goes until he stops by San's desk with a smile, "Choi, since you did so well on the Genesis project I'll let you choose."
"What are my options?" San asks, leaning back in his chair as two files are thrown onto his desk.
Mr. Kim looks down onto his clipboard. "Mr. Jinyoung needs help with the 3D design for-"
Mr. Jinyoung is one of San's bosses.
"-the new model that we're ready to turn in for production. You could send him an e-mail but I wouldn't, he's a bit...difficult to be around these days."
Mr. Jinyoung is also the husband of one Son Danbi, the thirty-four year old woman that San got...very familiar with for a groundbreaking six times at his apartment before he learned that Danbi is a bit too clingy and his job actually might be at stake if she keeps calling the office asking for San instead of her husband. Three times in a row.
She didn't handle San deciding it's best to stop seeing each other very well.
Getting fired for sleeping with his boss' wife and probably getting his nose broken (for the second time over a woman) when his boss' wife inevitably has a meltdown and exposes how San fucked her into his mattress six times once San refuses to meet up with her out of newfound respect for the man she's married to (read: he's scared that he'll get sacked) or literally anything else. The choice was quite obvious.
"I'll take the second option." San quips with ease as he flips over the folder.
"Research and development for a new model! I was hoping you'd pick that one and am not disappointed, you never back down from a challenge." Mr. Kim comments with a grin that San returns because he's been kissing his ass too long to stop now. "You're working with another engineer from the second floor."
San nods and, as Mr. Kim keeps going down to the next cubicle, his eyes sweep over the file and stop at the bottom of the page where one out of two people tasked has already signed their name. In neat handwriting;
Y/L Y/N
He bites back a groan, eyes falling shut and he can hear the Head of the office keep rattling off assignments somewhere in the background.
Nothing registers because suddenly, San remembers honey skin, judging eyes and a sharp tongue and wonders if getting his nose broken a second time right before getting fired by Mr. Jinyoung and losing his entire career would've been the wiser option.

the roads of seoul will be filled with traffic and packed with excited faces as people all over korea will be heading back to their hometowns to celebrate this festive holiday with their relatives. it’s a whirlwind of food, family, and fun!
as a reminder, trainees (including project green participants) do not have any mandatory classes on national holidays.
have a happy chuseok!

FOR +3 POINTS IN PERFORMANCE OR ANCILLARY SKILLS, you can post one of the following:
an edit or headcanon of what’s in your muse’s phone! there is no word count for this, and you may use the following prompts to get a sense of what you may want to share – who’s their most contacted person? what messages do they usually send? what’s their favorite playlist? who’s the last person they texted? do they have any personal photo albums on their phone? what are their most used applications? etc!
what was the last meaningful conversation your muse had on their phone (text or call) and who was it with? please write a solo with a minimum of 200 words about this conversation and the impact it had on your muse.
a headcanon or solo of your muse during this or any previous chuseok period! there is no word count for this, and it can be about just anything at all: does your character go home every year for chuseok, or will they stay in seoul and make use of the empty training rooms? do they help with cooking or does their family order in? do they participate in the more religious aspects of the holiday? do they enjoy wearing a hanbok? and so on!

An Orchestra of Traditional Music in Vietnam
Vietnamese Culture Demystified!
Exploring the local culture and customs is a part and parcel of every holiday, particularly if your destination is Vietnam. As the cultural delta of Southeast Asia, it's necessary to immerse oneself in the grand culture Vietnam has amassed, truly enriching your travel experience and take back much more than just travelgram pictures. More importantly, it shows that you're more than just a tourist, making you a traveller who is sensitive to local beliefs.
Here's everything about Vietnamese culture to get you started on your South Asian extravaganza:
Performing Arts:
Music in Vietnamese Culture
The Vietnamese have always held music close to their hearts. It is highly diverse and heavily influenced by China, and to a lesser extent South Korea, Mongolia, Japan and the former Indochina Kingdom of Champa. There are close to 50 national music instruments in the country, with percussion instruments being the most popular, followed by wind instruments and string intruments. Traditional music in Vietnam can be divided into two genres: Imperial Court Music and Folk Music.
Imperial Court Music, as the name suggests, was performed in the palaces of Tran and Nguyen dynasties. The songs were mainly about wishing the king and his kingdom longevity and prosperity. There were also songs composed in honour of gods and scholars such as Confucius, that were sung in temples and sometimes the King's chambers. These have been divided into three categories: Nhã Nhac ("elegant music", ritual and ceremonial music), Dai Nhac ("great music"), and Tieu Nhac ("small music")
Folk music has a richer history and is woven into the everyday lives of the Vietnamese. Some of the more popular forms are the Chèo, Quan Ho, Hát Chau Van, Ca Trù, Hò, and Hát Xam. Quan Ho and Ho are courtship songs sung acapella in northern and southern provinces of Vietnam respectively. Hat Xam was performed by blind artists who travelled from place to place singing, somewhat like the bards of the west. This form of music has diminished and is rarely heard nowadays. The more popular traditions of folk music are Hat Chau Van and Ca Tru, both of which have emerged from under the repression of the colonial government. The former is sung to invoke spirits during religious ceremonies and is trance-oriented, while conversely, the latter is sung by women for the powerful and elite men, a geisha-style of entertainment in a way.
A Ca Trù Performance in Vietnam
Nhac dân toc cai biên is a relatively recent addition to the music scene, and has garnered mass appeal in Vietnam. It incorporates western elements such as harmony to traditional music, a fusion of the east and the west.

Happy 16th anniversary to the Nation's Girl Group!
On the 5th of August, sixteen years ago, Taeyeon, Yoona, Tiffany, Jessica, Seohyun, Sooyoung, Hyoyeon, Yuri and Sunny gave their first ever performance of Into the new world as Girls' Generation.
The group rose to fame in 2009 with the single "Gee", which claimed the top spot on KBS's Music Bank for a record-breaking nine consecutive weeks and was Melon's most popular song of the 2000s decade. The group cemented their popularity in Asia with follow-up singles "Genie", "Oh!", and "Run Devil Run", which were released between mid-2009 and early 2010. Their second Korean studio album, Oh! (2010), won the Golden Disc award for Album of the Year (Disk Daesang), making the group the first and only female act to win the Album Daesang.
Girls' Generation ventured into the Japanese music scene in 2011 with their eponymous Japanese album, which became the first album by a non-Japanese girl group to be certified million by the RIAJ. The group's third Korean studio album, The Boys, was the best-selling album of 2011 in South Korea. An English version of the single "The Boys" was released in an attempt to expand the group's endeavor to the global music scene. The group's fourth Korean studio album, I Got a Boy (2013), was supported by the title track, which won Video of the Year at the inaugural YouTube Music Awards. Girls' Generation continued to build upon their popularity with their fifth and sixth Korean studio albums, Lion Heart (2015) and Holiday Night (2017). Following a five-year hiatus to focus on their individual careers, they returned with their seventh Korean studio album Forever 1 (2022).
The group's signature musical styles are characterized as electropop and bubblegum pop, though their sound has varied widely, incorporating various genres including hip hop, R&B, and EDM. In 2017, Billboard honoured Girls' Generation as the "Top K-pop Girl Group of the Past Decade". They are the first Asian girl group to achieve five music videos with over 100 million views on YouTube with "Gee", "I Got a Boy", "The Boys", "Mr. Taxi", and "Oh!". In Japan, they became the first non-Japanese girl group to have three number-one albums on the Oricon Albums Chart, and their three Japanese concert tours attracted a record-breaking 550,000 spectators.
After their 2009 meteoric rise to the top of the industry, SNSD has influenced K-pop in ways that cannot be denied. They truly ushered in an era where women could not only hold their own but also outperform their boy group counterparts and Gee has been the golden standard of what a K-pop girl group should sound, look and act like.
Thank you ladies for bringing on the best generation, Girls' Generation!

The hangul alphabet was published in Korea on October 9, 1446.
South Korea Hangul Day
South Korea Hangul Day, also known as Korean Alphabet Day, is observed annually on October 9. It’s a national holiday to commemorate the invention and proclamation of the Korean alphabet, known as Hangul (or Hangeul). It’s also celebrated in North Korea on January 15 as ‘Chosun-gul’ Day. Before the invention of Hangul, Koreans wrote using Classical Chinese with native phonetic writing systems. Hangul Day has been a national holiday since 1970, except for the years 1991 until 2012. We observe the day to commemorate King Sejong’s achievement and the promulgation of the ‘Hunminjeongeum,’ a document describing an entirely new script for the Korean language, which was later known as Hangul.
History of South Korea Hangul Day
Since its first inception in 1926, the date of Hangul Day has varied. In 1945, the South Korean government declared October 9 as Hangul Day, an annual legal holiday, and since October 9, 1970, Hangul Day has been an annual national holiday in South Korea. However, between 1991 and 2012, Hangul Day’s status as a holiday was canceled due to the South Korean government being pressured by major employers to increase the country’s annual number of workdays. As a result, the day remained as a commemoration but workers didn’t get the day off. On November 1, 2012, its status as a national day was restored.
Before Hangul was invented, Koreans used Chinese characters to write with native phonetic writing systems. In addition to a large number of characters to be learned, the grammatical differences between Korean and Chinese languages also became difficult for Koreans to write using Chinese characters. As a result, only those who had the privilege of education were literate. Therefore, King Sejong decided to create the Korean alphabet to promote literacy among all Koreans, and he proclaimed the publication of Hangul in 1446.
Despite all the benefits of Hangul, it almost went out of existence during the Choson dynasty. At the time, the elites who desired to preserve their status saw that Chinese characters were the only true way to write Korean. Hangul was then effectively banned by King Yeonsangun in the early 16th Century but then saw a revival towards the end of the century. It then had a resurgence in the 19th Century, and gradually grew more common, especially due to its role in Korean nationalism during the era of the Japanese occupation. In the 1970s, there was a decline in the use of Chinese characters, paving the way for the prevalent utilization of Hangul in almost all Korean writings today.
South Korea Hangul Day timeline
1894 The Initial Use in Official Documents
Hangul is adopted and used in the writing of official documents.
1910 The Continued Use in Schools
Although the official language of Korea becomes Japanese during the Colonial Rule, Hangul is still taught in Korean-established schools.
1938 The Script is Banned
Hangul is banned in schools as part of Japanese cultural assimilation.
1941 The Documents are Outlawed
All publications written in Hangul are outlawed.
1945 The Script is reinstated
Hangul is reinstated in Korea’s writing system following Korea’s independence from Japan’s colonial rule.
South Korea Hangul Day FAQs
Is learning Korean hard?
Korean might be ranked as one of the more difficult languages to learn by the Foreign Service Institute (FSI), but it’s still very much possible to learn as a non-native speaker.
Is Korean read left to right?
In today’s Korea, the majority of Korean is written horizontally, to be read from left to right.
Is Hangul scientific?
The Korean writing system, the Hangul, is considered to be the most scientific phonetic alphabet system. This is because its characters are based on the shapes of the parts of the human body that are used to enunciate the sound of those characters.
How to Observe South Korea Hangul Day
Visit the museum of King Sejong
Learn the alphabet
Raise the national flag
It’s fitting to visit the museum of King Sejong to celebrate Hangul Day. He was the one who invented the Korean alphabet. You can see exhibits explaining the creation of Hangul inside the museum. His reign is often seen as a golden period in Korean history.
The best thing to do to celebrate Hangul Day is to learn Hangul itself. If you are a non-Korean but interested in Korean culture, you may want to learn its alphabet. Hangul Day is the best time to do so!
A simple way to honor Hangul Day is to raise the Korean national flag. It can represent the pride of the country — the Korean alphabet.
5 Interesting Facts About The Korean Language
It’s a language isolate
‘Seoul’ means capital city
Verbs come last in the Korean sentences
It’s different in North and South Korea
It’s ‘our’ instead of ‘my’
It is said that Korean is commonly classified as a language isolate, meaning that it shows no significant link to any other existing languages.
Seoul, the capital city of South Korea, literally means ‘capital city’ in Korean.
Korean is a subject-object-verb (SOV) language.
The North and South Korean languages have distinct pronunciations, vocabularies, and even grammatical rules.
In the Korean language, the speakers use ‘our’ or ‘we’ instead of ‘my’ or ‘me.’
Why South Korea Hangul Day is Important
To commemorate
A holiday to learn
To celebrate where we come from
Hangul Day is observed to commemorate the invention and proclamation of the Korean alphabet. Besides, it’s celebrated in honor of King Sejong as the creator of Hangul.
Hangul Day can be observed by learning the Hangul itself. It’s the best time for those who are interested in learning about the Korean language and its alphabet.
Language is said to be a fundamental aspect of cultural identity. Celebrating Hangul Day can mean taking pride in one’s national identity.
