January 15th is National Hat Day! Make sure to don your favorite cap, bonnet, fedora, derby, tuque, or whatever you like to wear on your head. Hats in history have served a variety of purposes such as sun protection, warmth, social status, to hide a bad hair day, and for fashion.
For today, Jared letterpress printed an image from a very thin lead electrotype from the Lewis Winter Collection. Lewis Winter, who had a wood and photo engraving office on 627 J Street in Sacramento from 1888 to 1910, designed a lot of cuts of clothing items for local newspapers and magazines.
This cut, which was never mounted on a block of wood to make it type high and likely hasn’t been printed until now, depicts a man (almost Napoleonic in appearance) wearing a giant bicorn felt hat. This was printed with purple rubber base ink using our Washington hand press.

This was written in May 2019 and shares my thoughts on judging for the National History Day competition. It was the last contest I did in-person, with 2021 and 2022 done virtually, and only this year has it gone back to being in-person.

Veterans Day originally began as Armistice Day, which celebrated the end of World War I. After World War II, the day was expanded “Veterans Day” to honor all veterans, not just the service members who died during the First World War.
At the National Archives, we are proud to serve veterans through our work at the National Personnel Records Center. Veterans who need their service records for benefits can find help here.
Families of veterans who have died may also ask for copies of service records for family history, military burial, and medal replacement.

It’s National Dog Day, so say “hello” to the dingo (Canis familiaris dingo)! This good boy can be found throughout Australia and parts of Southeast Asia. In Australia, the dingo has adapted to various environments, from mountainous areas to deserts to tropical forests. It hunts opportunistically, in groups when taking on larger targets, like kangaroos, or alone for smaller prey like rabbits. Rather than barking, it communicates through wolf-like howls.

Invasion Day
On January 26 1788, the First Fleet of convicts from Britain arrived on the lands of the Eora Nation and the establishment of a British colony in Australia began.
Although the day is now official observed as Australia Day, it is, to quote Victorian community organisers, “an annual reminder of invasion, occupation, genocide and the ongoing impacts of colonisation that continue to destroy our land and waters”.
Keep reading under the cut - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that below is an image and names of deceased persons.
Tumblr media
First Nations people have publicly marked 26 January as a Day of Mourning since 1938. The photo above comes from 1988, when, on 26 January, Australia officially celebrated its bicentenary. In response to public celebrations of the day, gay Aboriginal and South Sea Islander man Malcolm Cole and artist Panos Couros came up their own way to mark the occasion – a float in Sydney’s Mardi Gras parade a month later.
The float, known as the “Aboriginal Boat”, took the form of a sailing ship manned by Malcolm, dressed as Captain Cook, the British man who “claimed” the lands of First Nations people along Australia’s east coast for Britain. Narungga and Kaurna man Rodney Junga-Williams played botanist Joseph Banks, who was also instrumental in the decision to colonise the continent. The float was pulled by their white friends.
As Australians ourselves, living on the stolen lands of the Kulin Nation, we encourage you to spend the day doing what you can to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. BlaQ Aboriginal Corporation is one organisation working to support queer First Nations people, that you in turn can support.

I have spent the last couple days since i got back from nationals absolutely obbsessing over what my topic is gonna be next year, and I've found it, its gonna be about Aethelflaed, lady of the Mercians from 911-918, she was so badass and was the only recorded anglo saxon queen to rule in her own right after the passing of her husband aethelred, lord of the mercians. I'm gonna do an individual performance again because its for the lolz and its what im good at, so this is gonna be my word vomit into the void process, day 1 of the next year begins!

October 29th is National Cat Day! Keeping up with highlighting some of the absurd, odd, and strange cuts from our print shop exhibit this month, Howard letterpress printed an electrotype (copy of a woodcut) made about 125-130 years ago from the Lewis Winter Collection.
Like this item printed, there are other cuts made by Lewis Winter in the collection that depict animals doing out of the ordinary activities. In this case, it’s a cat riding a bicycle. This was printed with blue rubber base ink using our Washington hand press.
