Okay guys I do have an unposted Shikamaru fic in my drafts but let's be so fr right now, it's sort of a copy-paste of A World Without You, as many of my fics are. Idk let me know what you think of this premise: -The world ends. Shocker. I know, you guys never saw that coming from me. -They time travel, only when they do it, they end up in their past bodies (I have two versions-- one where they're sixteen, one where they're twelve post travel) -Shikamaru is full in the Nara Fixation-- if you don't know what this trope is, basically Nara's have a "fixation" that they dedicate their lives to and obsess over. Maybe it's gardening, maybe it's shoji, maybe it's puppies. In Shikamaru's case, it's Naruto. -Honestly, they fuck more up than they fix. They're also very, very bad at keeping their time traveling a secret. Naruto and Kurama being friends doesn't help. Naruto just ripping his own seal off as soon as he's in the past also doesn't help. -Shikamaru is Whipped, capital W intended. He just does anything Naruto says, at any given time, and he needs to explanation. -Shikamaru does in fact follow Naruto everywhere. He does not care that he's really not supposed to. He doesn't care if he technically will lose his headband if he keeps skipping out on team trainings and meetings. -Shikamaru thinks Naruto is in love with Sasuke. Naruto is 100% under the assumption that he and Shikamaru have been dating for the past year or so, and that Shikamaru has just been too shy to make any moves. Thus, he's been waiting until Shikamaru "feels comfortable enough to make the first move." -Like Naruto, baby, he wants to eat you alive. Would anyone read this uh, vague outline, if I wrote it? Idk. I didn't take it as an attack, I just disagreed with what you said. I wanted to take the opportunity to discuss two of my favorite characters, Shikamaru and Neji— Neji if I had to choose one :)

The caption was meant to be mostly humorous— I don't think being injured constantly is special to him, but commonplace with shinobi of his level. It's just especially obvious next to Shikamaru, who, like I said, is a much more conservative fighter (which brings him value as a leader) and who's safety is prioritized over others as their strategist (as emphasized by Asuma).

Canon, unfortunately, also has never been explicit about the working dynamics within the Hyuga clan. It's never been clear the kind of work Neji may or may not have under the head family outside of training Hinata.

If you mean whether or not I ship Shikamaru and Neji, yes, it was in the tags :) if you mean the dynamic NejiShika vs ShikaNeji— I personally do not care and I don't think they would either. While it is extremely delightful as a shipper to see them always beside each other in official art, I believe there was a thought process behind this. During the Sasuke Retrieval Mission, Shikamaru and Neji were prominent side characters that played similarly important roles within the arc. Secondly, they both have neutral, earthy color palettes (and other complimentary features) that are easy to pair up for the sake of composition.

It actually wasn't the official art that made me ship them, though— with how I binged Naruto, I barely saw any before I started slowing down post Season 5 😭. It was watching the Sasuke Retrieval Mission and witnessing how well they played off of each other, how seamless their teamwork, and how strong their field chemistry was that did. It's easy to brush off their dynamic as "two smart characters getting along", but I think it's more than that.

From the very beginning, Shikamaru established himself as someone Neji could trust to lead. Not only was he detail oriented, took everyone's capabilities into account and planned ahead, but that Shikamaru, someone the team is placing their trust in, trusts them in turn. Trusts Neji, especially, in turn. Neji, who is surrounded by Shikamaru's childhood friends who he'd trust and have close bonds with, was tasked with the most difficult job because Shikamaru recognized (and recognizes) his extremely robust skillset. Fandom forgets his genius, but Shikamaru never will.

But what really gained Neji's respect was Shikamaru explicitly stating that the most important thing about this mission was that they were rescuing a fellow Konoha nin, and that he was willing to lay down his life for that. That was the way of Konoha shinobi. Even though he didn't like Sasuke, Sasuke was a comrade and they were tasked with the mission of taking him back. Neji, an emotionally driven person, is shown that Shikamaru thought there was value in that way of thinking, that that was what was most important and what drives Konoha shinobi to do what they do, that he thinks this way too.

This sets up their dynamic for the rest of the arc. Shikamaru, who had already respected Neji as a shinobi, expresses this and is rewarded with Neji's trust. Neji, acting on that, cooperates extremely well with Shikamaru throughout the mission, going so far as being proactive about his role and not only doing what he was told to do. There is a stark difference between how Shikamaru leads the others vs Neji, in which he doesn't really lead Neji. He works with him. Shikamaru as their strategist needs constant information about their situation in order to do his job, and Neji with the Byakugan never fails to deliver this and more. He and Shikamaru bounce ideas off of each other and they only get more and more comfortable working together the longer they do. It was a little shocking to witness that, throughout one day, Shikamaru and Neji had gone from what they were before (which wasn't really anything and even a little negative), to co-leading the mission together. The mission where Shikamaru says if they don't do what he says, they'd die. Shikamaru, when he and Neji separately concluded that the team had to split up, appointed Neji as the leader for the other team, once again, over the rest of their teammates who are all Shikamaru’s childhood friends.

The preparation for the mission wasn't just a one-and-done trigger for their trust for each other and how well they'd cooperate together, however. You can see the gradual improvement of their teamwork throughout the day and how that also extends to their opinion of one another. Neji, having been proven wrong about Shikamaru being a wimp (his words), starts paying closer attention to him and tries to guess what he's thinking... Quite explicitly. He starts playing this role of "explaining what Shikamaru is thinking" to the rest of their team without ever being told what he's thinking by Shikamaru himself. Not only is he always right (no doubt because he is also smart), but Shikamaru even...likes that? Shikamaru always respected Neji, but I don't think he particularly cared for Neji as a person (probably thought he was uptight) until this mission. When the team was trapped in Jirobo's jutsu Shikamaru lied about betraying the rest of them, and everybody's trust (even Choji's, momentarily) in him wavered except for Neji's. Neji continued to observe what Shikamaru was doing (you can see him just staring at him in the background) and slowly piece together Shikamaru's strategy in his mind. When he tells the rest of the group what it was and only asking for Shikamaru's confirmation after, Shikamaru only gives his amused-smirk-huff thing as his answer. He then proceeds to ask Neji to throw a kunai towards a crater in the wall that everyone can see, instead of himself or Choji who was literally beside it.

That doesn't even scratch the surface of all the moments Shikamaru and Neji are curious of each other/express their trust in one another. I'd love to go on and on and I genuinely could make a break down on their relationship and how it changed during the Sasuke Retrieval Arc, but this is long enough as it is. This mission, though it's what started it, isn't even a fraction of why I ship these two together, either. I thought I'd elaborate as a treat for my fellow Shikanejis to find, as well :)

And lastly, being misogynistic isn't only applicable to heterosexual men, plenty of queer men are too. I think Shikamaru would be hard pressed to endlessly defend himself as heterosexual, as that'd take way too much time, effort, and a frustrating conversation he'd rather avoid. Would he claim to like men, though? I don't know. I personally see Shikamaru and Neji as a "it ended up happening" on Shikamaru's end. Funnily enough, I *do* think he has a preference for more feminine qualities, though I don't think he knows.

hatake clan headcanons.... my main one is ofc the "hatake eat people" one because i read all of ourliazo's kakashi fics and it changed my brain chemistry irreparably. most of the ones i subscribe to are the usual run-of-the-mill hcs: wolf summons, pack instincts, canine teeth (all the better to rend the flesh from your bones, my dear!), etc etc.

one of my own hatake hcs is that they're just all fucking awful at dealing with grief. the real reason why (in my head) the hatake clan was whittled down to just sakumo and kakashi before sakumo killed himself despite a clan-wide history of martial excellency was because basically all the able-bodied hatake were sent out during the first shinobi world war. it was fine at first, bc they're all batshit crazy powerful, flinging around lightning jutsu like they're tossing candies and mazel tovs at a jewish wedding.

then, one of the pack is killed. all falls silent.

a hatake throws his head back, howls his fury at the heavens, and the skies split with lightning.

basically, it was sort of like a feedback loop; one hatake dies, another goes fucking crazy in a feral beserker rampage to avenge them (killing a whole lot of people bunch of people through sheer proximity to the white chakra crackling around them but ultimately making themselves easier to kill through sacrifice of technique for brute strength and viciousness), and then they die, and now we've circled back to stage one.

sakumo didn't go nutzo bc he fixated on the village. duty and loyalty and preservation of the hearth & home. a wolf forcing himself into the shape of a sheepdog so he'll be allowed to herd the flock. he made the entirety of konoha his pack and, well. we know how that story ended.

so really, by hatake terms, kakashi is positively mentally sound! isn't that incredibly funny to think about? (actually i have tons of thoughts about kakashi and the concept of suicide and how he's only not dead because how would obito see the world through his eye if he was too dead to see anything at all :( but i won't air allat out here lol. this is already too long)

this is less a hatake clan hc and more a kakashi hc, but in my mind kakashi totally started wearing masks because he just wouldn't quit biting people that annoyed him. and as a precocious toddler smarter than all his peers and also quite a number of adults, many, many people annoyed him. it didn't really stop him from biting people, but the scant amount of time spent dragging it down gave sakumo and later minato (though not so much after sakumo died and kakashi turned into a rulebook) enough of an opportunity to grab him before he could lunge teeth-first.

tbh the token thing was totally something i made up on the spot, but now that i think about it, woodworking does seem like a shikamaru sort of hobby, huh? i like to think ino forced him to find one for himself that wasn't cloud watching or shogi when they were kids because she found both horrifically boring. shikamaru likes to whittle while on watch during missions because woodworking + playing a game of mental shogi against himself + paying constant and vigilant attention to his surroundings is probably the appropriate amount of stimulation to a nara mind in focus.

Scenes or Comic Panels I Would Draw If I Could Draw BC Some Of My Chatpost Ideas I See Better As Pictures Not Words, Part Two.

-Deidara having had way too much coffee or soda and is sitting with Sasori, explaining one of his favorite tv shows or something and just info-dumping like crazy. And the other Akatsuki members pass by throughout the day and they all wonder how the hell Sasori is just calmly sitting there, giving Deidara his full attention while the blonde just rants for literal hours. Finally Dei wears himself down and falls asleep and Konan goes in to check on Sasori and she’s shocked to see it’s not Sasori at all but one of his puppet body-doubles. Dei in his caffeinated frenzy just didn’t notice.

-Shikadai, Boruto and Mitsuki using a metal detector in the Nara woods, something sets it off so they start digging. Finds Hidan (his Jashin necklace is what set the detector off). Shikadai doesn’t know what to do with a talking head but Mitsuki mentions that his Parent makes bodies in his lab all the time. So they cart Hidan off to Orochimaru. Hilarity (or horrible, horrible chaos) ensues.

-Pakkun finds the Akatsuki hideout. Is preparing to inform Konoha of its whereabouts but recognizes something strangely familiar about the scent of the tall man in the orange mask. Waits a while, spies through the window at night and Mask-Man takes off the mask and. Holy shit. It’s the guy Pakkun’s master Kakashi has been mourning all these years. Leaves, goes to the rest of the ninken. The group all together waits until Obito is alone, ambushes him, and drags him back to Kakashi. They receive many treats and many pats that night. Pakkun is ring-bearer at their wedding.

-Deidara and Itachi start sleeping together in the winter. Not having sex but literally just sharing a bed. Because Kisame is cold-blooded and doesn’t provide the sickly Itachi adequate warmth, and Sasori being a puppet doesn’t get into bed with Deidara a lot as-is because he has no need for sleep, and when he does, his body doesn’t provide warmth either. Kisame and Sasori act like they’re fine with it but secretly kiiiiiinda jealous. Eventually Hidan wants in on the situation too because he feels left out of the “sleepovers” and Kakuzu sits up half the night counting money or reading the Bingo Book anyway. But Kakuzu … is MORE than happy to get Hidan out of his hair (and off of his expensive sheets).

-Deidara pregnant, asleep, and Sasori sitting just fixated on his belly. He gently puts his hand on the belly and the baby gives a little kick. Sasori makes a game out of asking the baby yes or no questions, with a kick being a Yes. Eventually Deidara stirs half-awake and asks “Will your Daddy shut up and let me sleep?!” and then he gives Sasori a kick off the bed with his own legs, mumbles “Good, hm” and goes back to bed.

-Sasori looking up to the sky and asking God to give him something beautiful from heaven. Out of nowhere Deidara explodes up out of the ground, cursing and dirty, into Sasori’s arms. Sasori looks at Deidara, then at the ground and is like “Thank you, Devil-san.”

-Kisame having a talk with Obito, formally asking his permission to marry Itachi. Obito asking how he managed to see through the Tobi persona, Kisame telling him that any idiot could see that “Tobi” was too far-fetched a personality to be believed. The others all say something similar to having figured out that Tobi was an Uchiha, except for Deidara who nearly faints. “I slept with an Uchiha?!” and Hidan is like, “Fuck the Uchiha part; are you telling me you slept with TOBI?!”

-Nagato noticing how much time Konan spends with Kisame and starts to think that maybe she’s attracted to muscles. So he secretly tries to work out but ends up spraining a few ribs and ends up in bed. Konan asks him what he was trying to do, Nagato confesses and Konan laughs. She tells Nagato that she goes out with Kisame so much because the shark is intimidating and being with him prevents men from hitting on her. Next scene is Nagato accompanying Konan to the grocery store, with every single one of his Pein bodies in tow, forming a terrifying wall around the couple, who are holding hands.

-((I think I’ve said this in a post before but)) All of the boys in the Akatsuki wanting to take a shirtless picture together, to show off their “muscles”. They ask Konan to take the picture but she’s offended they didn’t ask her to be in it. they say sure, thinking she’ll be in her bra but nope, she takes off everything and lets the twins out while she flexes. the final picture is Konan flexing in the center, Deidara, Hidan and Itachi fainted on the floor, Tobi has a red trickle coming from his nose area under his mask, Kisame and Zetsu are both alarmingly red, Kakuzu is seen outside fighting some white-haired pervert peeking in through the hideout windows, Sasori is studying Konan’s body with an interest that’s somehow more frightening than the others’, and Nagato is rushing up with a blanket up cover her.

-Kakashi walking down the aisle to Gai in a beautiful wedding dress, being escorted by Naruto and Sasuke on each arm, with all of the ninken holding different parts of his veil-train. Sakura is at the top of the aisle holding Gai’s wheelchair, monitoring his IV bags. He’s not fully healed from his war injuries yet but he insisted on doing this as soon as he could speak again. Lee and Ten-Ten are Gai’s “best men”.

-Hidan gets accidentally blown to bits by one of Deidara’s bombs. Loses everything but his head. Kakuzu tells Sasori that since it was HIS partner who caused this, he should be the one to make Hidan a new body. Sasori agrees. But after awhile Kakuzu comes to him and tells him to delay his progress by a few weeks. Turns out taking care of just Hidan’s head is a LOT easier (and stress-free) than keeping up with Hidan as a whole body.

5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?

I'm going to be entirely honest, I don't really have one, though I've been thinking about a few in particular lately:

"Reform," by QueenPB on Youtube, mostly due to how the fandom tends to portray him as masking more heavily than Ingo, and I interpret the song as being about hiding or replacing things perceived as negative in order to gain some sort of societal acceptance

"きみでないのなら" ("kimi denai no nara" [?]), by itoki hana, due to the general vibes of it; it's a very haunting song that seems to be about missing someone sorely, wishing desperately to see them again

"Patchwork Staccato," by Toa, for literally no reason other than I find the thought of Emmet saying "I really wish you'd just stop existing" is hysterical. Also I want to see him do the lil dance

6. What's something you have in common with this character?

Fantastic question, I'm going to say that he keeps a bird, I keep a bird, therefore we are bound by birds and suffer annual broodiness and screeching from our respective birds

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

That he loses his voice when he gets stressed. It was worse when he was little, but it's rarely much of an issue as an adult.

Also, with regards to aus that have a magic system, I tend to see him as being more inclined towards physical manners of fighting, and magic for offense, rather than support and healing.

25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?

First impression? A funky, slightly intimidating lil guy with fantastic design. Curious bean.

Current impression? Fixation for almost two years, I love him and want to see his heart shatter and his body break, but also he deserves nice things. He's an interesting bean, and it's been fun to figure out how to write him.

Well. 'Housewife' is a funny term for what you've described, anon, because to me, it looks like you're just mothering him. I could delve into a whole digression about how women in heterosexual relationships can take on a role as a second mother to the man, but... But you and I both know what an Oedipus complex is. I hate to use any of Freud's work, but I've taken too many psych. classes to not reference it a little.

In Freud's opinion, which from this point on I'm going to be referring to as "The Psychoanalytic Theory," there's five stages of development that you go through when you're a baby to sexual maturity. There's this thing called the subconscious, and to put it simply, all the things you repress and don't wanna think about go there.

I'm only going to be focusing on two sections of the five stages of development today, the first being: the first. This one's called the Oral Stage.

When you go through a stage, you're going to either resolve it or fail to. When you're in the oral stage, you just wanna get your mouth on everything because you're a baby and that's how you settle that curiosity. New toy? Shove it in your mouth. Mommy talking to me? Eat her hair. You get it.

When you fail to resolve a stage, it gets shoved into your subconscious, and you develop a fixation. An oral fixation is normally shown through excessive biting, chewing on things such as pens, kissing items that aren't meant to be kissed, and even smoking.

The third stage of the five is called the Phallic Stage.

Do you know what happens when you fail to resolve the Phallic Stage, the stage where you identify with your same sex parent and notice the opposite sex parent is, in fact, the opposite sex?

You get an Oedipus Complex. If you're a boy, anyway. Freud liked to ignore women. I think there's a name for the feminine equivalent, but I don't remember at the moment.

And, when you fail to resolve both the Oral and Phallic stages, you get Narancia Ghirga.

He's so, so annoying about it. He doesn't even realize he has it- come on, every guy wants a babe that knows how to cook and wants to take care of you! He's not weird 'cause he likes how women are supposed to be. (He got smacked after saying that, don't worry.)
