This is from Chapter 5 of Rhythms, coming on Sunday! I can't believe we're already five weeks deep into posting...
On the squishy gray chair next to the bed, TK is deeply asleep with a thin, gray fleece blanket burritoing him. His head is tipped against the backrest, his mouth open, eyeballs moving behind sockets. He’s dreaming.
Curling up beside Carlos in his bed lasted all of five seconds before a nurse rushed in and told them off.
“You shouldn’t even be here – let alone be in bed with him,” the nurse said, “You want to stay? You get in the chair and I pretend I haven’t seen you.”
He was tired and frustrated as hell, but TK knew better than to push his luck. He took the chair like a young prince assigned to one of the lesser thrones in the castle.
“I thought you’d still be awake,” Iris says as Carlos shifts his right leg so she can sit beside him on the bed. “I can’t sleep for more than twenty minutes at a time. PopTart? They’re cinnamon.”
“Sure.”
Carlos watches her break open the foil packet. She’s delicate about it, as if it’s of major importance not to snap the PopTart within. She hands one to him, perfect, whole.
“I see Darryl Keyes. I keep on seeing him,” she says, “Do you?”
Carlos takes a bite from the corner of his PopTart, thinking. The PopTart is sickly sweet. “Not really him. His mom.”
“I didn’t have the pleasure.”
“She was just as delightful as could be.” Carlos smirks joylessly.
“Well, she sure raised a champ.”
“She was about to let me go. But then he came back and–” Carlos’ eyes fall on TK, so beautiful, asleep in the chair. He’s murmuring, his eyes squeeze. He curls up more. “Honestly, what I keep thinking about is the darkness.”
“The darkness?”
“When I close my eyes it’s so dark. As if I’m still dead.”

“Bucks?”
Tears were clouding her vision and so she rubbed the heels of her hands against her eyes before being able to focus them on Nancy. She was looking at the state of Robin, hovering helplessly next to her. God, what was her life?!
“What the hell happened?”
“I- I can’t find my jack-” Robin’s voice broke with a pitiful sob.
“Your jacket? Are you leaving?” Nancy prodded, worried brow creasing.
“Just, I need to get out of here,” Robin wiped her wet cupid’s bow on her thumb. “Can you help with that?”
Without further ado, Nancy opened a closet door and picked out two leather jackets, neither of which looked hers judged by the size, but at the same time they seemed to be exactly what she was looking for. She threw them over her one arm and the other she used to pull Robin out the front door with her. Through a throng of incoming guests, they ran to the lift and put on the huge biker jackets, neither uttering a word. It was suddenly so quiet after all the ruckus.
They went all the way down to the dimly lit basement parking and there Nancy beelined toward a highly polished, sleek motorcycle. It was Eddie’s, everybody knew that. From her (Eddie’s) jacket pocket, Nancy fished out keyes that Robin assumed were a perfect match for the bike.
“Are we committing a felony right now?” Robin’s tear-streaked face scrunched up in question.
“I wish,” An amused smile twitched Nancy’s thin lips. “But this is all approved by the owner.”
That didn’t do much to ease Robin’s nerves. “We shouldn’t- I’m not getting up on that thing.”
Nancy tugged on her wrist encouragingly, dragging her over to the bike. “Cmon, you know you want to.”
She was correct. It was a magnificent ride and there was something thrilling about the unsafety of it all. Part of the appeal, and whatnot. Also, Robin did love chasing the high.
“But we shouldn’t.”
“You wanted to get out. This is your ticket.”
“Are you drunk?” Robin asked, trailing her finger against the shiny black frame.
Nancy threw a leg over the motorcycle to straddle the leather seat, rolling her eyes while she did it. “I’m not planning to kill you, you know.”
The other corner of Robin’s mouth tugged slightly upwards. “That wasn’t an answer.”
Nancy sighed, reaching out her hand for Robin to take. “Do you trust me?”
Robin hesitated, eyeing Nancy carefully. She looked fucking godly on the bike, face fixed with determination and torso covered in black leather. ‘Nobody Robin couldn’t handle’— as if! She was in deep shit.
With an unbelieving laugh, she accepted the offered hand and climbed onto the motorcycle. She pressed up against Nancy, arms wrapping tightly around her waist and holding on for dear life. Holding down on the clutch switch, Nancy started the bike and Robin buried her nose in the older girl’s neck at the rev of the engine. Her heart hammered against Nancy’s back, impatient for the takeoff.
Between one breath and another, the garage door opened and they kicked off.

Aro4Aro Stancy Break-Up AU Part 1
Or: Steve Harrington and Nancy Wheeler are both aromantic. Neither realize this. Poor Jonathan Byers ends up in the middle.
It hits him like a slap. The sounds of the party outside the bathroom door distort, muffle, cease. He can’t hear anything past Nancy’s words.
“Like we’re in love?” he asks. He cups her face, like you’re supposed to cup your girlfriend’s face. It’s soft. Nice. His gut curdles.
“It’s bullshit.” She spits it at him, eyes unfocused, mouth snarling.
He wants to ask her, “how did you know?” Wants to shake her and demand what gave away the game, where he went wrong. He doesn’t. “You don’t love me?” Steve asks.
“It’s bullshit.” She doesn’t sound angry anymore. She sounds like she’s going to cry. That’s what keeps his feet planted.
“Okay,” he says, backing up a few steps and dropping his hand from her cheek. “Let’s get you home, Nance.”
It’s hard. Nancy’s all elbows and flailing limbs. Even when she’s plastered, Nancy knows what she wants and right now, that’s away from Steve.
“Get off me.” The looks he gets from the partygoers at the bottom of the stairs tells him exactly how this spectacle is going to go over at school tomorrow. Didn’t you hear? Steve Harrington’s just a chip off the old block. Can’t seem to take no for an answer.
“Harrington?” Jonathan Byers’ disgusted face tells him that it’s going over just the same for him. He stands at the bottom of the stairs, a red cup in hand. A bit of the lurid red spiked punch sloshes onto the floor as he passes it to one of the kids he’s standing next to. He takes a single step forward, pushing up the sleeves of his jacket like they’re in some action flick. “What the hell are you–”
“Jonathan,” Nancy says, slurring. Her mouth is stained that same lurid red. Her sweater, too. “It’s bullshit.”
She’s crying when she says it. The gossips surrounding the spectacle are already whispering to each other, giggling behind hands and faux concern, too quiet for Steve to hear over the music. Something swells in Steve, a latent desire to bodily shield Nancy Wheeler from anything coming her way. Even if it’s just high schoolers. Even if he’s bullshit.
He sighs. “Help me get her home, man.”
Jonathan’s arms drop, his sleeves rolling down as gravity does it’s job. Steve refuses to meet his gaze, eyes trained on his sneakers, watching them shuffle back and forth on his toes with indecision, until they finally make their way toward where Steve and Nancy are stalled out at the bottom of the stairs. Jonathan must put his arm around her because her weight on Steve’s back lessens.
They limp their way through costumed teenagers, shoving through when the bodies seem unwilling to move. The chilled October night air hits like relief. Steve gulps it down.
“Where’s your car?” Jonathan asks, quiet.
Steve finally looks over Nancy’s head at the other boy. He doesn’t look mad anymore. His brows furrowed in a expression Steve isn’t familiar enough to read. “Did you drive?” Steve asks. “Did you drink?”
“Mom has the car.” His shoulders droom, like that’s somehow a shameful admission.
“Did you drink?”
Jonathan shakes his head, “barely got my first sip.”
Nancy’s hiccuping between them, muttering quietly to herself. He hears some choice B words – “Barb” and “bullshit” and “boyfriends” – before tuning her out.
He fishes his keyes out of his back pocket, tossing them left-handed to the other boy. “Can you drive?” he asks, relieved when Jonathan nods.
Steve leads the way to his car where it’s parked down the block. It takes concentrated effort to shuffle Nancy into the backseat. She lays down, face smushed into the leather seats. They don’t bother trying to wrangle her into a seatbelt, just close the door and slide into the front.
When Jonathan starts the car, Blondie belts out about her heart of glass – la, da, da, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, yeah, riding high on love's true bluish light – at a volume that really emphasizes the tonal shift the night’s taken. Jonathan turns the volume all the way down until all they can hear is Nancy crying in the backseat. The true soundtrack of the night.
The twelve minute drive to the Wheeler house drags on for hours. Jonathan's knuckles are white on the steering wheel, and Steve's head keeps boucing off the glass of his window with how he's pressing his heated cheek to it. Nancy stops crying by miute three, starts snoring by minute eight. No one says a word.
Steve and Jonathan don't communciate beyond hand gestures and mouthed commands as the lever a grumbling Nancy out of the car and sneak her into her house and into her bed without waking anyone up. She's going to be pissed in the morning. Her teeth are unbrushed, she's still in her stained sweater, and her shoes are still in, shoved under the quilt on her bed with the rest of her. Steve lingers at the threshold, staring down at her as she sleeps. She's so beautiful it makes his heart stutter nauseatingly.
This is what love feels like.
Jonathan is already settled into the driver's seat when Steve makes it back out to the car. He slides into the passenger seat, looking out the front of the windshield, palms sweating.
"What now?" Jonathan asks.
Steve looks at him from the corner of his eye, surprised to find the other boy already looking back. "Take me home?"
Jonathan turns the key in the ignition and drives.

#to be fair#MMA by virtue is a blend of various martial arts rather than a style its own#and it has its roots in brazilian jiu jitsu (which of course is from jiu jitsu)#since it was a response to trying to beat bjj (kind of by joining it)#atla meta#atla analysis#i get that MMA is its own beast these days but it's really not a singular martial art (though it is heavily bjj+boxing)
I'm actually not against the idea of Avatar addressing MMA in Korra, since both martial arts and cultural intermingling (both benign and not-so-benign) were the foundation of ATLA's setting. Arguably, Iroh was the progenitor of MMA in ATLA by incorporating waterbending forms into lightning bending.
My main issue with Pro-bending in Korra was that it was too clean and streamlined. This is a sport where impoverished street kids like Mako and Bolin barely scrape by on their winnings. It should have been underground and at least a little grimy. Maybe have it be reminiscent of UFC 1, showcasing every fighting style under the sun. Or have pro-bending be based on Jeet Kune Do, since it was literally Bruce Lee synthesizing different martial arts into one efficient style.
In fact, I think Season 1 would have been more interesting if Korra's Pro-bending team had a brash, Bruce Lee-inspired trainer who embodied the MMA side of the Traditional vs MMA debate. He could have been a rival and ideological foil to the traditionalist Tenzin. He could be a non-bender with Equalist sympathies.
My issue with Korra's setting wasn't that it made Avatar 1920s, but that it wasn't 1920s enough. At its core, Republic City showcased how urbanization and industrialization tears down the old divisions and social orders. It shouldn't have just been Benders vs Non-Benders. There should have been ethnic enclaves and racial tension; parts of the city with names like Little Omashu or Ember Town, where a turf war could break out if your eyes are the wrong color. A burgeoning women's movement existing alongside an Immigrants vs Nativists conflict. People wielding guns inspired by Chinese fire lances. There could have been speakeasies and flappers and 1920s Asian fashion! Also, "Eskimo" films were quite popular in the 1920s & 1930s, as well. We could've have had homages and "cameos" from Old Hollywood Asian and Indigenous performers:
Row 1: Tsuruko "Tsuru" Aoki, Sessue Hayakawa, Toshiye "Toshia Mori" Ichioka
Row 2: Keye Luke, Lotus "Long" Shibata, and Anna May Wong.
Esther Eneutseak, Nancy "Columbia" Eneutseak, and Ray "Mala" Agnaqsiaq-Wise.
To end on a positive note, check out the Tumblr blog Audrey Does Karen, who archives and analyzes 19th and early 20th-century Chinese fashion. And enjoy some Chinese Folk-Jazz fusion as you scroll:

From ATLA to LOK to Seven Havens Pt. 1
So I'm sure you're all aware that Avatar Studios is currently working on a new series starring the new Earth Avatar immediately following Korra. It'll take place in a cyberpunk setting where the four nations no longer exist. To be honest, I don't see myself following this series unless it manages to generate a lot of positive feedback within the first few episodes. I like fantasy and I like cyberpunk, but I don't really want to see a show juggle both.
That said, from a behind-the-scenes perspective, the way the franchise has evolved provides us with unique insight into what Bryke initially wanted for ATLA.
Above is the very first sketch that Bryan ever did of Aang. As you can see, our protagonist was originally supposed to have a giant dog-bear sidekick and the setting was supposed to be futuristic. Hmm... Sounds familiar.
Katara originally had loosely-tied bundles of hair that framed her face. This hard-to-animate type of hair would get passed on to Korra.
Bryke initially wanted all bending to be based on only one style, specifically Northern Shaolin. It was Sifu Kisu that convinced them to have each nation practice a different type of kung fu. With Korra, they were able to integrate the four elements into one martial art as they had originally planned; this time, they used MMA, as it had gotten quite popular by the 2010s.

#replies#believe it or not#I don't even have all that much interest in the 1920s#short hair and boyish builds in women's fashion is not my cup of tea at all#and the way they styled bangs back then was usually either unflattering or greasy-looking#but if you promise me an Asian Roaring 20s#then you better deliver!#I do enjoy swing and big band music though#oh my gosh kung fu-inspired swing dance would be so cool#and Mako and Bolin have the perfect look to be heart throb crooners#Youtube

The Butcher and the Wren ch. 7-9 live-read
Chapter 7:
We get some more of Jeremy's backstory: his father forced him to put down an injured deer when he was seven years old. Part of the lesson was to not let something suffer but Jeremy didn't get that part of it. Instead he became fascinated with the idea of suffering and the moment it changed to the stillness of death.
Also we get yet another song reference: These Boots are Made for Walking by Nancy Sinatra. It was kinda neat the first time but now it feels like the author is just including her personal playlist for whenever that tv adaptation takes off.
Chapter 8:
We get yet another reference to a real-life serial killer (like the author wants to flex her knowledge of true crime), this time being Israel Keyes which is a more fitting reference than the others with the similarly inconsistent methods.
We also get a dumb scene that is logistically clumsy. Wren's preparing to go home and has just entered her car. She is in the parking lot with the car doors closed. Leroux comes out the building and answers a phone call from Ben (a coworker I don't recall being established). Wren is somehow close enough to hear both sides of the conversation even with the doors closed but positioned where she isn't seen; I have questions. Also the only info we get is that everyone is equally stumped by the case.
Wren further ponders the Trudeau clue, likes her home because it is old and comforting, prefers coffee over wine, and tends to be haunted by unsolved cases.
We meet Richard who can be summarized by being Wren's generic supportive husband. There was no reference to him before this scene. Honestly if I didn't know better I might have thought that Leroux was meant to be Wren's love interest.
Before going to bed, Wren waters her basil plant and wonders if the killer does the same. Is this meant as a humorous moment? The beginning of narrative symmetry? Who knows!
Chapter 9:
Jeremy drives to school and is restless that his planned killing spree is almost ready. He considers it his magnum opus.
A later chapter does explain why he's going to school and the reason isn't nearly clever enough to make up for the authomatic confusion at reading that sentence.

Today LIVE! I met Grammy-winning bassist, Will Lee, a lifetime ago at The Rock ’N Roll Cafe on Bleecker Street in NYC. He was already a legend as the bassist of The World’s Most Dangerous Band, house band for the original Late Night with David Letterman. Will and Paul Schaffer hold the distinction of being there from day one, until the final days with the CBS Orchestra on Late Show, giving him the world’s record for longest-running bassist on late-night television. Our paths crossed there, too. More on that on the Live.
Other than his three decades on The Late Show with David Letterman, Will has lent his talents to well over 2,000 Pop, Jazz, Rock, Reggae and Gospel albums including those by The Bee Gees, George Benson, Michael Bolton, David Bowie, The Brecker Brothers, James Brown, Mariah Carey, Cher, Natalie Cole, Christopher Cross, Ray Davies, Gloria Estefan & the Miami Sound Machine, Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Billy Joel, Alicia Keyes, Chaka Khan, Cyndi Lauper, Barry Manilow, Ricky Martin, Bette Midler, Laura Nyro, Diana Ross, David Sanborn, Carly Simon, Frank Sinatra, Ringo Starr, Steely Dan, Cat Stevens, Barbra Streisand, Frankie Valli, Luther Vandross, Dionne Warwick, Weather Report, Nancy Wilson and Akiko Yano, He has sung and played on an equal number of TV and radio commercials (he was the voice of Teddy Grahams, Stroh’s Beer, The US Army “Be All That You Can Be”) as well as many movie soundtracks.
Will performed at Live Aid with The Thompson Twins and, with The CBS Orchestra, is in the house band for the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. He has toured with Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, Horace Silver, The Brecker Brothers, and Herbie Mann. He has played with Miles Davis, Phil Woods, Dizzy Gillespie, and was held in Charlie Parker’s arms as a baby. Will’s performed or recorded with all 4 of the Beatles, pretty thrilling for a founding member of the world’s premier Beatles band, The Fab Faux!
Will’s an inductee in the Musician’s Hall of Fame in Nashville, and has a permanent display (check out www.musicianshalloffame.com). His latest single, It’s All Too Much, and his new video, Hey Shorty can be accessed as well as Will’s last solo album, “Love, Gratitude and Other Distractions", a previous release "OH!" and a jazz album, BirdHouse, with his father, Bill are all accessible from his website www.willlee.com
I’ve had the great good fortune to see Will perform in numerous configurations. Talent plus. Plus we share a most fortunate life choice. I’m not sure there’s a nicer, kinder, lovelier, more humble human. Can’t wait to sit down with him again. Adore the man.

I think there's gonna tell a different story that what happened IRL. That's what the Deadline article says :
Created by “A Beautiful Mind” Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman, “The Crowded Room” is inspired by — but is not a direct adaptation of —Daniel Keyes’ 1981 nonfiction book “The Minds of Billy Milligan.” The show differs from its source material by following the fictional Danny Sullivan (played by Holland), who is arrested in 1979 for his involvement in a New York City shooting.
There's no mention of the r*pes and they said it's different from the book that is inspired by Billy Milligan. They probably only took the psychological aspect of the books but changed the crimes, and Idk how I feel about this. They wanted to tell the story of the first person who was acquitted of a crime because of his mental illness that is DID. It's based on a real life event but they changed the crimes, probably to avoid controversy. But if so, they shouldn't told the story at all, it's kinda weird
But isn’t that kind of Hollywood making money off real victims but just glazing over details? Like he’s a r*pist irl but you’re saying in this version he’s just a guy with DID? That’s missing quite a chunk isn’t it? And if that’s the case isn’t it also Hollywood benefitting also a very real mental disorder and making it seem evil?
I find it weird we picked and chose which areas of this guy to portray right? Idk maybe it’s just me but the concept of this kinda gave me the ick from the beginning
Idk someone tell me if I’m just being a negative Nancy here lol
