Posting snippets of my Klaine season 6 rewrite until I have the courage to finally publish it:

“T-minus three months until the wedding!” An explosion of cheers. The sounds of excitement smack into my ears like a tidal wave. I’m instantly underwater. It’s oddly unsettling to know all these people are so happy for us. It feels like the proposal all over again—all these people watching, drinking up our love. But that time, at least, many of them were friends and family. Here, most of these people are still strangers to me, acquaintances from NYADA and nothing more. Their eager applause and vulture-like stares only crush me inwards. It’s claustrophobic. I almost feel like a monkey in a zoo—all I did was move a few steps across my enclosure and the humans behind the glass are applauding me like I just invented sliced bread. Blaine doesn’t seem to notice. He’s feeding off the crowd’s energy, smiling big enough that his eyes disappear into little crescents so all I can see are the fans of his dark eyelashes. He reminds me of a cherub when he smiles like this. Precious. He pulls me into a hug. Despite my muscle’s previous tension, I will them to relax. It’s hard when it’s in front of all these leering people. My knees are too stiff, and they nearly buckle as Blaine presses against me. My arms remain awkwardly at my sides, locked into place inside his embrace. The heat of his body suffocates me. I catch a whiff of that raspberry hair gel—comfortingly sweet—but then body odor wafts into my nostrils, souring all my air. I try not to flinch away. Since when does Blaine smell like a middle school boy’s locker room? Gross. Revulsion overwhelms my senses. I remind myself that this is just what people smell like when they’ve spent a lot of physical energy. I’m sure I smell like this after going to the gym all the time. Blaine’s never commented on my body odor when I get back home after exercising. He always kisses me without complaint, compliments how I take care of my body, usually takes the opportunity to say something sexy about my muscles. What’s wrong with me? Why am I only paying attention to all these little bad things that are out of his control? Blaine must sense my discomfort. Probably because I’m like a statue in his arms. He pulls away. “Are you okay?” I’m being stupid, I’m being weird. My gut twists itself into a knot that I don’t know how to untangle. I can’t name whatever it is I’m feeling, besides bad. No need to worry him. It doesn’t matter. So I say, “I think I’m just hungry. I haven’t eaten since lunch today.” Blaine’s eyes widen immediately. “Oh my God, Kurt, that was like eight hours ago.” He rests his hand on the small of my back and guides me gently to the edge of the stage, then out the door as he calls out goodbyes to a few of his friends. My nostrils suck in as much fresh air as they can get—well, as fresh as the air can be in New York City. The wind has the musty edge of piss, but it’s better than inside the club. Once we’re outside, Blaine slips his hand into my own. His skin is still a little moist, but the cool night air makes it more tolerable. I squeeze it. “Thanks.” “You gotta take care of yourself, Kurt.” He frowns a little. “I know. I’m sorry to rush you away from the adoring crowds.” He softens into a smile, then squeezes back. “You are the only adoring crowd I need. Now, let’s get you a chicken salad wrap, stat.” “I think I’d scale Mount Everest in a pair of unsensible heels for a good chicken salad wrap,” I joke. He chuckles, baring his teeth for all of New York to see. “I know.” He does pay attention to the things I like. He does love me more than anything else. He loves me more than anything else. I hate that I have to keep reminding myself of this, because isn’t that obvious already? Then why can’t I believe it?

idk if this is too convenient, but devil wears prada. kurt would thrive at pseudo-vogue. he would give andy sachs her makeover and gatekeep the master closet. and a huge part of devil wears prada was how everyone made prestigious personas for themselves and looked down on andy, who came from ohio. kurt would keep it real.

honestly i didn't like blaine at first (in s2 when he was introduced). he was too dashing and white knight and therefore a little bland. but then the gap attack showed me that actually he's deeply weird. then s4 happened and puppet master happened and he became a highlight for me.

like at first blaine seemed to know exactly who he was, what he was doing, and what he wanted. but none of that is true. he made up an implausible interest in biology because he was afraid to audition for nyada. he started spiralling about being a bad person after the s4 breakup. he's hilariously wrong about people (tina's crush, assuming all the s6 warblers are gay, jeremiah). he's messy. he has the evocative look of someone who cries in secret and the unselfconscious bluster of the totally clueless. i adore him

Why I think Rachel Berry is Autistic/Neurodivergent (Coded)

So I think Brittany is the best example of an autistic Glee character, but i think you could make a case for Rachel too. I don’t want to pretend Rachel would be the greatest representation of autistics ever or anything, but I like neurodivergent headcanons as a neurodivergent person and neurodivergent representation is very lacking in quality and quantity, so we currently must make do with coded characters. This is all just my theory, and I don't even claim it to be perfectly air-tight. It's more than okay to disagree with me. Don’t take it too seriously, this is all in good, self-indulgent fun. I should note that I don’t have any credentials to diagnose anyone; I don’t recommend using this as a way of diagnosing yourself. They’re are better forms of research you could do. I also apologize if this post offends any fellow neurodivergent people. Rachel can be a particularly negative character for some and I don’t mean to imply that all neurodivergent people are like her or that neurodivergents that do see themselves in her are bad; I also see some of myself in her a bit and this neurodivergent interpretation of her makes me like and understand her a bit better. I also don’t want to make it seem like I think neurodivergence is a negative thing inherently. It isn’t at all. I think Rachel’s personality could make her do negative things, but the neurodivergence itself isn’t negative. The post was very inspired by @smolbrittana and their post on Britt’s neurodivergence. Definitely recommend it you’re interested.

So let’s start with some autistic traits and assessing how they might fit Rachel:

Special Interest/Hyperinflations

Barbara Streisand, Funny Girl, West Side Story, theatrical things in general. Need I say more? I will, no matter what you think. Rachel is obviously very obsessive over the things she likes, but also what she wants. From wanting tons of attention from her various crushes in high school, wanting Quinn’s friendship, wanting to be a the best constantly, getting into NYADA and not even really considering alternatives, etc. These are flaws in her character in some situations, but I don’t think it comes from a place of malice… typically. The crackhouse stuff was messed up, but I think this comes from her brain just latching onto things, to the point where these things become a part of her personality almost and in her head there’s no alternative positive situation conceivable to her other than getting what she wants. All or nothing. If something doesn’t happen the way she wants it it feels like a personal attack. Like being a star and shaping her life around being like her idols, but when she feels like someone could upstage her she… sends them to a crackhouse. I bet the reason why she’s so talented from such an early age is because she hyperfixated on being great at what she want to be, great like Barbara Streisand. I also think that this is why Rachel is so forgiving. She hyperfixates on belonging and others liking her, so she’s willing to forgive those around her no matter what they’ve done to her, best example being Quinn. She obsesses over her own perfection; for example, her NYADA audition where she messes up and feels like she has to completely start over and perfect it all the way through rather than continue through it (which I believe is what you’re supposed to do in a situation like that—I know I’ve seen real broadway actors push though their mistakes). Perfection is the only option to her at times.

Social Difficulties

Rachel is not good at social interactions. I think she feels things very intensely and sometimes can’t “properly” express emotions, at least not in a neurotypical way, therefore coming off as awkward or like a jerk. Sometimes she is a jerk, but I digress. Her first interactions with Finn are very awkward because of the way she goes about them. She goes in too strong, clearly feeling a lot for him already, and freaks him out, but it happened to be in a way that seemingly still endeared him. From his perspective, she’s also just… off putting, probably, because she’s neurodivergent and he’s neurotypical. He still falls for and cares for her, of course, but knows she’s different. Essentially in Season 1-2, her interactions with others are often turned up to eleven in terms of intensity/awkwardness.

“Abnormal” Speech

In the early seasons Rachel has this very fast, high-pitched, matter-of-fact way of speaking. This speech pattern goes away as the series goes on so gradually it might not even be noticed till it’s gone (and I have a theory on why it goes away, but more on that later). I think it’s departure is most noticeable in S4 E12, where Rachel imagines communicating with her younger self. There’s a clear difference in how to two Rachels talk and even sing and it’s interesting to see that contrast (and I gotta applaud Lea for being able to show that, however annoying, she is talented). She also has a very colorful vocabulary, which could also be a symptom.

Intense Emotions & Aggression

Totally. Rachel gets very upset when she doesn’t get her way, to a fault sometimes. Her taking it so personally when Tina was chosen to play Maria in West Side Story, saying it was “my part” (another example of her connecting to her special interest so personally). Her pissed off behavior towards Finn after she tried to cheat on him with Puck and kept telling him to forgive her rather than letting him come to a conclusion himself in S2 was very unselfaware. Sending Sunshine to a crackhouse when she felt threatened by her talent. Disrespecting her dance teacher when she grades her “Oops I Did It Again” number. She takes what she perceives as threats very personally, which might be a Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD) thing. Santana has a lot of rage, but damn so does Rachel. This could also be related to her feeling very intensely about her special interests or her strong sense of justice, which I’ll get into later.

Hyper-empathy/Low empathy

Rachel’s tendency to not take other’s feelings into account might exhibit low empathy. Now, it’s worth saying that just because a person doesn’t have emotional or cognitive empathy doesn’t mean they’re a bad person. I believe that as long as they’re able to have sympathy and/or compassion they’re good. Empathy is like being able to put yourself in someone’s shoes; feel the things they feel on a personal level, whether you’ve been though what they have or not. Sympathy is only being able to look a those shoes; seeing and logically understanding the other’s emotions, but not feeling them on a personal level. And you can still show compassion either way.

Stimming/Fidgeting

Now this one was hard to find evidence for, and that’s fine. Not every neurodivergent person stims or fidgets in a particularly neurodivergent way. Most people, neurodivergent or not, stims in some way. Any movement can be stimming. I feel like that fast, peppy walk thing she does, particularly when she’s angry, might be a stimy thing. Like she has so much stimulation that she has to really move and get it out of her system. I also do this when something excites me. I’m pretty sure I remember Santana (?) calling it a “bird walk” or something and said that she walk with a “weird pointy toe” way. Rachel’s body language does remind me of a bird some times, like how when she’s upset she’ll move her head in these very quick, twitchy or jerky movements. She holds herself in a certain way when she sings, which became most apparent to me when Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina’s actresses) talked about mimicking these movements in the behind-the-scenes for S3 E20. She jumps up and down and touches her face when she’s happy, and presses her face against the wall when she’s distressed. Might be stimy things too.

“Abnormal” Body language

Rachel has some very upright posture. It’s very proper in the earlier seasons. Somewhat “stiff”, if you will. Her facial expressions are very, for lack of a better word I can think of, extreme. Always the most they could be. If she’s smiling, she’s really smiling. If she’s crying, she’s really crying. Et cetera, et cetera. Like her speech, this relaxes as she gets older, however, I’ve noticed that during her time with Funny Girl, especially during the understudy auditions and her fight with Santana, both her straight lace posture and body language, “bird” mannerism, odd speech pattern, and other traits comes up again, but for the negative. It was like Rachel was hurt and regressed.

Anxiety & Depression

As I mentioned, Rachel regresses into a negative version of her traits in S5. This isn’t to excuse her, I hate Rachel’s actions during this plot-line as much as the next guy, but this could explain it. I’ve theorized that Finn’s death, the pressure of being on Broadway and the excitement yet anxiety of reaching her dreams so quickly to the point where she felt stuck in monotony might have made her somewhat regress back to how she was in early high school after having grown past it. Like she wanted things to be the way they had been before and lashed out against her own success, almost subconsciously/unknowingly sabotaging herself due to this regression. And then after losing her TV show she’s at her lowest in terms of people seeing her talent as something worth putting value into and she does have her come-to-Jesus moment when she goes back home, her actions finally weighting on her and her having to rebuild herself. Somewhat alternately, you could say that Rachel started masking in New York; maybe she knew that not masking in high school made her a target for bullying, so in NYADA she attempted to mask her neurodivergent traits so she could fit in better. This could explain her change in clothes, makeup, mannerisms, speak-pattern, et cetera. Of course, you can’t truly hide you neurodivergent traits, so Rachel is still quite othered in NYADA. Neurotypicals often can tell when someone’s neurodivergent though subjective social data and other them, whether they know they’re doing that or not. So her masking leads to a breakdown because masking is exhausting and painful for a lot of neurodivergents. She breaks. A covert mental breakdown is honestly the only way I can rationalize her leaving Broadway for TV; logically it doesn’t make much sense for her to have done that in my opinion. That’s why I think returning to Lima was good for her to start fresh and grow again in S6. A part of me almost wants to call it a neurodivergent burn-out or masking that led to a shutdown/meltdown. Rachel definitely fits the quota for “gifted kid syndrome”, being surrounded by yes-men all her childhood, and that could led to burn-out when you’re no longer around that. I think Rachel had been struggling for a while but hadn’t expressed it in a healthy way that was true to herself and so she didn’t really process her feelings or shit actions till her “meltdown/shutdown”, if you will, till S6. But that’s just a theory on what happened to her character. It’s hard to assess this part of Rachel’s arc because even though I think it could’ve made sense and it could’ve been interesting, it ended up being one of the worse written plot points of the show, and that is saying something because Glee fans are well aware this show’s not a perfect masterpiece.

Gifted Kid Syndrome

Many autistic people are seen as gifted or special in youth, and sometimes that expands into adulthood. Rachel definitely was seen this way by others and saw herself that way too. There are countless examples of character going on about how talented Rachel is at singing, whether they’re praising her or insulting her. And we know from the first episode of the series that she’s been seen that way for a while.

Rituals, Sensory Processing, and Perfectionism

Rachel has a strict morning schedule and moisturizing ritual. She also flosses between classes, which could be a ritual thing and/or a sensory thing. I feel like her very preppy clothing style in the early season could’ve also been a ritual thing and/or a sensory thing. It’s like she had to dress this way either because it’s a routinely thing or because she felt uncomfortably in other clothes (probably routine, because she does stop dressing like that in the later season, unfortunately—that style was so cute. But hey, putting yourself through clothing sensory hell for the sake of masking, due to the fact people made fun of your preferred clothes in the past, could add to that meltdown/shutdown theory I have). She also has moments where, while stressed, she rest the top of her head on the wall. Also likely a sensory thing to me. She seems very strict on these being done perfectly. She can’t do imperfection and things not being done her way. (Also, I don’t know how true it is, but I swear I remember hearing a trait of autism could be having perfect pitch. Of course Rachel seems to, but I’m not a super smart music person so I don’t know how to tell myself).

Deep intreats in animal

Rachel often wears animal themed clothing in the early seasons and she’s vegan. She also berated that woman for caring her service dog in her purse in S5 E19, assuming she knew more about the woman’s service dog needs than the woman herself. She cares about animals a lot.

A strong sense of justice

This part of Rachel gets forgotten or undermined I think and I wanted to acknowledge it. Especially by S3, Rachel really fights for her friends and against whatever she believes is an injustice. This isn’t to say she’s always in the right with these behaviors or that she’s the best ally to everyone, just that these traits are here. Before Glee club she joined in a lot of advocacy clubs (some she really shouldn’t have been in, but it’s framed that way), she wanted to start a “Gay-Les-All” (The Gay-Lesbian-Alliance), and she regularly protests Mr. 👞, whether it’s by storming out of class or putting tape over her mouth in silent protest when she thinks he’s undermining her talent. In S1-2 it feels entitled most of the time, but I think it becomes a bit more selfless in S3, at least for a while, with her being very for Kurt during the student election, to the point where she stuffs the ballot box and gets suspended for it. Still not a good action, but with good, selfless intentions. She berates that one woman in S5 E19, which is still bad and misinformed of her, but it’s an example. She also stands up to her teacher when she didn’t like her “Oops I Did It Again” performance. And I think, while in the wrong, Rachel was just trying to stand up for herself against a teacher who bullied her a lot.

Difficulty “Fitting in”

This is Rachel’s entire story. Trying to find somewhere she felt she belonged. She wanted to be a part of something special to make her special. I believe this is a part of why she is obsessed with feeling like the best in the room. She was bullied and different from others so she felt very othered; maybe she tried to interpret this othered feeling as “I’m better, they just don’t realize” as a coping mechanism, but I think deep down she knew that wasn’t the case and everyone hated her for other reasons (some justifiable, some ableist if you say she’s neurodivergent) and she had to learn she could share the spotlight and shine along with people at her level. A very “Oh No!” By Marina (and the Diamonds)—“I feel like I’m the worse, so I always act like I’m the best” type deal. In S2 she begins to take down the pedestal she (and others) put herself on as a defense and become self aware and this continues into S3, then the cycle happens again in S4-5 where she starts putting herself up on that defense pedestal again, then takes herself down once more in S6 to her own rock bottom so she can be on healthy ground again by the flash forward and the end of the series. This isn’t perfectly done, but it’s done well enough where I can see that was the goal they might’ve been going for with her, and I appreciate that type of nonlinear character arc, it just wasn’t done well here. Like, not only was it nonlinear in story but also in writing quality and that’s where it’s faulty. Even when you take away all the neurodivergent framework—all the stuff about rituals, shutdown, et centra—this reading could still make sense for Rachel. She’s queen of the outcast who has to humble herself in order to thrive.

WEEK ONE: IDENTITIES

Day 1: Gay

Wyatt adjusted the tie around his neck impatiently. He finally gave up after a few seconds, realizing it would never feel right to him anyway.

He looked around hesitatnly. The room was filled with other Broadway-hopefuls, nervously mingling with each other, still trying to hide their jealous glances. They knew there would be someone better than them at singing or dancing. Wyatt couldn’t imagine ever going to a school like NYADA, he was just here to support Kurt.

He looked around for the boy he’d harboured a crush on for a year, ever since Sabine and Sam had tricked him to come on their cross-country camping trip with Kurt. He chuckled to himself. Having a crush seemed so high school in hindsight.

“Well, well, well.”

Wyatt smirked, turning around and putting on the sultriest face he could manage with the discomfort he was feeling in his suit.

Kurt looked at Wyatt, hands on his hips. He made several ‘tsk’ sounds. “Look who cleans up nicely.”

Wyatt spread his arms, holding back from doing an actual twirl in a room full of people. “Only you could get me to put on one of these torture devices, Hummel.”

Kurt smiled, letting out the most genuine laugh he’d managed since his disastrous break-up with Blaine. Maybe there was light on the horizon. Maybe there was more love in the future.

santana... this might be my bias talking but i imagine they're somewhat tight... "it's not unusual" is amazing performance fodder (though rip purple piano 💔), but also santana stepped up for him (and kurt) against karofsky in night of neglect, and she was willing to risk everything in getting revenge on behalf on blaine in michael (they spend a sizable number of scenes together in that ep)... also they have that fun dynamic where santana makes little disgusted faces at certain things blaine does in performances ("love doesn't come in a minute" + santana's shocked face during the dance breakdown of "hungry like the wolf / rio" + blaine rapping in "perfect" + santana giving kurt an offended look during "it's not right but it's okay") also they walked down the wedding aisle together 🏳️‍🌈

rachel comes next i SUPPOSE but i always kind of got an impression they were more coworkers than friends even during high school 😭 they had a shocking number of duets for a duo that hardly seemed to relate to each other otherwise but they DID get drunk together & kissed in biota and also starred in west side story as leads... rachel is definitely closer to kurt (e.g. she "sided" with kurt during the dance with somebody ep + hummelberry were actually college roomies) but it does seem like blaine & rachel coordinated some nyada assignments together, also blaine cheered her up in s6 when she was in her flop era !! doesn't seem like she kept too close contact with him after he & kurt broke up though because she didn't know about blaine and karofsky dating when she spoke with kurt later on

MERCEDES AND BLAINE WERE ROOMMATES. so much lost potential there like they could've been Peak "this is my boyfriend sam and this is his boyfriend blaine" energy... that one scene where mercedes walks in on a million lit candles in the apartment and immediately goes like "BLAINE?" but blaine was literally guiltless in that endeavor... also mercedes invited to the bachelor chalet ❤��

brittany - weirdly hostile and friendly with blaine at the same time. they were hanging out during lunch together and blaine asks how santana is?? they also performed "shout" and couple other fun numbers together & she kissed him on the cheek during "heroes"... they also made out in a made-up glee script (WHY 😭). blaine & artie arranged & choreographed ULTIMATE CAMP "boys/boyfriend" to cheer brittany up !! brittany banned hair gel from prom and then made fun of blaine's hair?? also asked if blaine was born in america during the s4 elections arc 💀 anderpierce going head to head as president candidates during elections would've been interesting but she was paralleled to sam instead... although i DO have to thank her for giving us the blaine & sam pres/vp duo ^_^

kitty & artie had apparently invited blaine to go out bumper bowling with them but he declined because he didn't want to be a third wheel (sam voice Fifth wheel). when tina pokes fun at blaine's very obvious feelings about sam during "against all odds" kitty smacks her on the arm and says "shut it" LOLL there's a lot of snark between her and blaine, with comments from kitty like "SOMEONE'S manstruating" or "no one reads show choir blogs, just you blaine" or blaine saying in his time capsule "kitty, who’s kind of a bitch but we kind of love her" ?? also anderwilde appearing as the dirty dancing + twist duo in the pro-twerking presentation 😭

the marley and blaine "i may have a juicebox" anderson relationship is a little scant, but seems friendly !! that one time mr. shue kept shutting the glee clubbers down when marley wanted to suggest one of her original songs for regionals, blaine put together a meeting and they tried out her songs ("all or nothing" blaine & marley duet ^_^) also that one scene where marley's like "we should light up sparklers INDOORS" blaine's like 😕🥰 about it in response LOL also there's this little moment in "chasing pavements" where blaine guides marley to the center of the stage when she was singing in the wings <3 and a shot in "diva" where marley's trying to fix his hair and blaine acts all diva-like. crumbs truly

Best/worst title?

I hate titling stories, so honestly I'm not totally satisfied with any of my titles. Courting Royalty is probably my most clever - it's thematically relevant, a pun, and isn't just a lyric or literary reference. The worst title is these bodies are hoping to get addicted to sound because it's SO LONG WHY DID I DO THIS?

Best/worst summary?

I'm pretty happy with the summary for Miles To Go, because I feel like it gets at the tone and plot of the story without giving too much away:

In the wake of Finn’s death, Kurt struggles to keep up with schoolwork at NYADA or engage with his life in general. He finally finds purpose again when he decides to spend the summer venturing west, to scatter Finn’s ashes in the Pacific Ocean. The road trip is long and lonely and challenging, but Kurt’s luck starts to turn around when he meets a handsome man named Blaine, who’s heading to California for his own reasons. After crossing paths in Colorado, they decide to travel together. As they get closer to the west coast they start to let down their walls, learning more about each other and revealing what they’re really seeking on this trip.

The worst summary is probably The Feeling's Plain to Me, because it's so nondescript and boring, but I feel like I can get away with it because it's a sequel:

Best/worst first line?

If I have to pick a best, it might be Confluence, because I feel like it packs a lot into one sentence:

Charades and fishbowl were the first-choice games to get drunk during in the Bushwick loft, but sometimes the roommates wanted a quicker avenue to intoxication - in which case they played King’s Cup.

This is kind of cheating because Courting Royalty really opens with a magazine article, but the first line of narration is probably my favorite opening:

When Rachel had told Kurt that she was secretly a European princess, he was 100% certain that it was a scam.

I don't have anything that stands out to me as "worst" - just a few pretty mediocre ones.

Best/worst last line?

I'm gonna say that the best is True Colors, because it's decently long and interesting:

But she smiled at her reflection - pink hair and ratty clothes and eyes bright with the sheen of intoxication - because she was free, and she was excited to figure out who the hell this new self was.

I think worst is probably Confluence. Not because it's particularly bad, but because I realize it's the second time this year I ended a fic with "Blaine follows Kurt out of bed for post-sex showering," and this ending line is the less interesting version of that:

“Ours,” Blaine agreed, and then pushed himself out of bed to follow his breathtaking naked fiancé to the shower.

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?

Way more! I feel like I was constantly writing this year. I did not expect to both have so many ideas and be able to deliver on so many of them.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?

Uhhhh I mean I never expected to write a Kurt/Blaine/Sam threesome, let alone multiple fics about it, let alone spark a whole impromptu fest about it. This started as one sort of silly idea - the observation that both Kurt and Blaine had crushed on Sam and then ended up living with him - that other people took and built on, inspiring me and others to keep writing more.

Relatedly, I also didn't expect to write real actual smut, but we'll get back to that later.

What’s your favourite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.

Ooof. I mean, I don't publish anything that I'm not proud of, and it's hard to pick my favorite child. If I had to choose one story that I'm the proudest of (saying it makes me happy is a little weird, although it does), it's probably Miles To Go. I know I've talked a lot about it elsewhere, but I think it's the most impressive work I've made this year, and there are so many scenes that I just love (the WHOLE Vegas sequence, man, I love myself for that).

Okay, NOW your most popular story.

By pretty much any metric, it's In Orbit. I'm immensely surprised and pleased that so many people enjoyed it. It meant a lot to me, and god was it fun to write.

Story most underappreciated by the universe?

This year it looks like it was True Colors, which has existed for just under a year and has 50 hits. I get it - it's a gen fic, a character study of Quinn - but I'm really proud of that story. It was one of those delightful creative exercises where I got to dive into the weird complexities of what characters might be going through emotionally, giving a little more weight and reality to the high-drama insanity that is Glee.

Story that could have been better?

I think it's Courting Royalty. I adored that prompt, and was so happy to write for it. I think it could have been a much more expansive story - there's so much to explore in the idea of surprise teenage royalty, and honestly it could have used more humor and hijinks. But I knew going in that I had to keep the scope pretty limited. I had just finished writing Miles To Go, which was 35k that I wrote in like, 2 months? I was tired, and on a deadline for the bang, so I kept it pretty succinct while still telling a complete story. I have some vague ideas for a sequel, so hopefully I can return to that world someday and expand on it.

Sexiest story?

Gotta be Confluence. It wasn't the first E-rated fic that I wrote, but it was the most like..."this is just a story about sex" fic that I wrote. I still kind of can't believe I did it.

Saddest story?

Miles To Go. It's about grief, and loss, and figuring out how to move forward from that. I'm happy with how I portrayed that, and if I did my job right I made some readers cry.

Most fun?

Maybe these bodies? It was sexy and fun, I got to throw in a little Kurtbastian to a Klaine story, and there was something very entertaining about Blaine's mix of immense guilt and immense horniness.

Story with single sweetest moment?

I don't think I write terribly treacly scenes. What comes to mind is the end of In Orbit - because the boys had been through a lot, so the epilogue was pretty damn sweet.

Hardest story to write?

Probably Naughty and Oh, So Nice. I was SO not inspired for this one. I wanted to write a Kublam Christmas fic - because, I don't know, there was something there about the warmth of the holidays mixed with the excitement of seeing old friends mixed with the dizzying possibilities of "seeing" old "friends" wink-wink-nudge-nudge. But then I was just not in a sex-writing mood but I needed to get it done by Christmas. The first draft of this was so bad, y'all. It had sentences like "and it felt amazing and then they both came." I still don't think it's as good as my other smutty fics (and I don't know how personal I wanna get in order to justify that lol), but thankfully several heroes from the Lima Bean Discord server helped me punch it up.

Easiest/most fun story to write?

Oh this is kind of how I answered the previous questions about these bodies, but I'll also say that In Orbit was a joy to write. There were some parts that were a little tougher to figure out, but overall I was just building the story ahead of me as I went, and it was a delight the whole time.

Did any stories shift your perceptions of the characters?

I really enjoyed examining both Quinn and Sam in the stories they were featured in this year - both of which I started doing a little last year, too. Writing the Some Kind of Summer stories was also a fun way to examine an alternate backstory for Sebastian. It's usually so accepted fandom-wide that he's a trust fund baby, so making it so that his stepdad was the rich/notable family member and he actually came from humbler roots was a fun avenue to explore. How does that recast Sebastian's personality and actions?

Most overdue story?

Definitely the Some Kind of Summer series. I had this image of Kurt and Sebastian being next-door neighbors and meeting on the roof outside of their bedrooms YEARS ago. Like, Glee-was-still-airing years ago. So I'm super glad that I finally got the chance to write that.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?

Firstly I would just say that writing smut is a writing risk that I didn't expect to take. I think I have some old post where I say smut writers are braver than US marines and I can't imagine doing that - but, bit by bit, I worked my way up to the stuff I've written this year. It's challenging in a new way, but it's been interesting to play with and fun to bring some of my sexier ideas to life.

Secondly, I participated in collaborative fandom events, and working with an artist was a new and totally delightful experience for me. I can see how nerve-wracking that kind of collaboration could be, but I was fortunate to work with people who were great teammates and made some incredible art to go along with my stories!

Somewhat relatedly, I also became an admin for a fandom blog, and we hosted an event for the first time. We didn't get a ton of engagement, but we did get some, and I'm so grateful and astounded that anyone at all wanted to participate. I'm also really happy with the stuff that I wrote for that event. I don't know that it taught me much about writing, but running a fandom blog has definitely been a learning experience, and I hope we continue to grow and get better as we try more events.

This year’s theme and the story that demonstrates it most:

I cannot think of a cohesive theme for everything I've written this year (beyond the reality that it's all written by me and so it has my interests and experiences and hangups throughout). Honestly I'm happy with the variety, though.

What are your fic writing goals for next year?

I want to make progress on and start posting Disaster Boys (working title) (and also hopefully finish it, God I hope that doesn't take a whole year). I also have a whole list of other fic ideas I'd love to make headway on - most notably my Mediator AU, which I MUST WRITE but still have to work out so many plotting kinks before I can truly start drafting.

Overall, this was a shockingly productive and creative year. According to AO3 I published 164,797 words in 2022 (which is inflated because In Orbit was actually mostly posted in 2021). It's the first full year of fic writing I've had since getting back into fandom. I'm pleased that I still have so much that I want to work on.

As soon as he started being a Gigolo, Brody’s wallet was always full, always with good clothes, fancy clothes, luxury started to be something he wanted more than anything else. But, the school was never a second plan. He kept in mind that being a Gigolo was only part of the plan to help him with school so he could be a dance teacher. His plan was to work with kids, and that would never be forgotten.

Now that he was done with college, and he was finally working as a dance teacher in one of the most famous academies of New York, he decided that being a Gigolo was also something he loved. Nowadays you can find Brody Weston always with the fastest and most expensive cars, living in a luxury apartment in Manhattan, always looking for his new expensive gadget, as well as his next trip. Or, you can find him sleeping with the most famous and rich people from around the world.

Description: Coming straight from Twins Fabray into the Gleeboot universe is Grace Fabray. I believe Sydney Sweeney's look is a lot of how I always envisioned Grace to look which is why I used her picture. She's slightly more curvy than Quinn and quite busty which gives her all the wrong attention which is why she typically wears bulky sweaters and loose fitting dresses. Grace is Quinn's younger sister in this story, who is passionate about the arts as well as her studies. Grace stands her ground on her beliefs and isn't afraid to immerse herself in things others find as uncool or outdated. She also is coming to terms with her sexuality and is crushing on the clueless but kind cheerio in Brittany S. Pierce. She is incredibly caring and defensive of those close to her, especially her sister Quinn but isn't afraid to stand up to her and tell her when she's wrong. Grace will be one of the main characters being that she is an original member of the New Directions.
