Myth Asks the Fandom

Do you think Hitman characters would love video games (and if yes, what would they play)?

I thought of this question after playing Untitled Goose Game recently. I can’t quite explain it, but something about it just makes me go, “Yep, that is totally perfect for Lucas Grey.” (@lucas-grey and @ellenchain, you’ll have to let me know what you think about that!)

I did have some thoughts about other characters, though not as strongly as Grey and his chaotic goose energy. I think Diana would enjoy strategy-based games, but is more likely to play a goofy mobile game on a burner phone than something on a console. Olivia strikes me as someone who would love to play Sims (and would definitely have her friends included as characters).

47 clearly doesn’t like playing for an audience, or at least when it comes to dancing games like the one in Hokkaido—maybe he would do better with a controller-based dance game? The disco scene in Yakuza Zero comes to mind. Otherwise, I think he would enjoy a gardening-based game, or something calming with gardening included (I hesitate to say Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley, but you know what I mean.)

Your reincarnated elderich horror Odysseus gave me a spark of an idea based on that au, but it’s kinda silly so I apologise in advanced for this.

Long ago before Hera, Zeus had a lover, a minor but powerful god of potential that challenged Zeus and was constantly at odds with him. However, that rivalry later turned them into lovers, with the small god being the few who can openly criticise Zeus and get away with it, though sometimes they suffered from a few… steamy punishments courtesy of Zeus.

However, that all changed when one day, a remnant of the Titans’ army killed them and cursed the god to reincarnate, always being able to reach their fullest potential but at the cost of tremendous suffering. And if they were to remember their past through talks about them or falling in love with Zeus, they would die painfully after a day. Zeus tried and tried to save his lover but no matter what, he’s forced to watch them suffer over and over until he’s unable to take anymore of the pain and gave up, making sure no one mentions their lover again before he eventually married Hera. Only the eldest of the pantheon knows of the god of potential’s existence and connection to Zeus.

Later on, during the Trojan war, as Zeus ordered Odysseus to kill the baby, he realised that this was his lover reincarnated. Even after trying to give up on his lover, he can’t bear the thought of making him suffer by him, the few times he did to other reincarnations are sins he can never forgive himself for. So, he lets Odysseus keep the baby after Ody found a loophole in the prophecy, and a minor part of Zeus’s heart squeezed painfully upon seeing that he still has their wit.

And Zeus, he can’t look away. He knows what will happen, he knows that Odysseus is going to suffer but despite Zeus wanting to pull away once more, the guilt that had built up over the years made him stay and watch.

I wonder why christian misrepresentation are rarely talked about if compared to other religion misrepresentation. Like, I've seen people really vocal about Greek myths misrepresentation in LO and such (and it's valid because it's a culture and religion) but I rarely saw the same thing with christian even though there are many media who use christian religion innacurately, to the point where it comes off as using it as an aesthetic and not a proper religion.

Is it because of rampant religious trauma especially in western world? No ulterior motives on this question. I'm not a christian and yet I'm curious about this. I apologize if this sounds harsh.

I obviously don't have The Answer(tm) to this but personally speaking (and I'm about to get VERY personal here so take this with MOUNTAINS OF SALT), I think it's just the obvious - Christian mythology is one of the most well-documented and strongly protected out of virtually any other religion on the planet. Especially here in the West, it's commonplace for kids to go to Sunday school, for couples to have Christian weddings even if they're not practising Christians themselves, even the American anthem references the Christian God. It's simply not as easy to 'misrepresent' it because the representation is written into our very fabric of society. Even Greece itself is primarily made up of Orthodox Christians.

So anyone that does 'misrepresent' it are either completely mislead hardcore Christians, or people who are doing it intentionally, such as with the intent to make a parody of it or to deconstruct it through a different context or whatever have you. And of course, people will still get mad at those things, if you're implying that people aren't vocal about Christian misrepresentation then frankly IDK what to tell you there LOL If you want a contextual example in the realm of webtoons, Religiously Gay was dragged to hell and back during its launch for having a very crude and insulting depiction of St. Michael, and frankly, yeah I don't disagree because what the fuck is this-

(like at best it's just terrible character design lmao that said, there's also plenty else to criticize Religiously Gay for, including its fetishy representation of gay relationships and the fact that it's still just the "naive person who looks and acts like a child hooks up with mean person in a position of power" trope, blech, but the character design is definitely the first thing you notice)

There are even plenty of hardcore Christians who will deadass claim "misrepresentation" over things that ARE factually correct but they just haven't read the actual Bible and simply cherry pick what works for their own agenda. And of course those people are routinely called out by people like myself who know for a fact that Jesus wouldn't have promoted the war crimes that many modern day Christians are committing and justifying today. So it really depends on the definition of "misrepresentation" here.

The issue specifically with LO and Rachel that I personally call her out for (and many others) is that she's called herself a "folklorist" and claimed she's so much more knowledgeable on Greek myth than anyone else, while making a complete mockery of the original mythologies while not being honest about her intent as to whether LO is actually supposed to be a legitimate retelling OR a parody (because it sure acts like the latter more than the former, but she still seems to expect us to take it seriously and consider her knowledge of Greek myth superior?) Which leads to a lot of her teenage audience claiming shit like "Persephone went down to the underworld willingly" and "Apollo did assault Persephone in the original myths actually" and the classic "why would Lore Olympus lie or make up fake myths?"

You just can't pull off this extent of erasure with Christian mythology because we have a whole ass book of it that's been preserved, sold on shelves, and systematically integrated into society for thousands of years. Of course, there are people who will still try their damned best to twist the Bible to match their own bigotry with the whole "Jesus hates gays" bullshit (he would never), but it's met with equal amounts of 'misrepresentation' that are actually fully well-read and are intentionally subverting and changing things to either critique, parody, or restore the original intent of a lot of stories in the Bible without all the manufactured right-wing crap.

Greek myth, on the other hand, has some stories that are well preserved, and others, not so much. And in the modern day outside of the poems and hymns, you'll also rarely, if ever, see anyone use stories from Greek myth to ostracize, torture, and murder other people. "Misrepresenting Christianity" is more often done by actual Christians who are using the Bible to commit hate crimes than the people who have actually read the Bible and are just taking creative liberties with it for the sake of deconstructing / parodying / analyzing / subverting it. Veggie Tales "misrepresents" Christian stories because obviously Moses wasn't a fucking cucumber lmao but it still accomplishes its goal by retelling Christian stories in a way that's fun and educational for children.

By comparison (on the whole, I'm not comparing LO to Veggie Tales LMAO) LO just isn't clear in its intentions beyond Rachel's initial statements that she was trying to "deconstruct" the myths, while labelling herself as a folklorist. Therefore, I'm going to criticize how she does it because the way she's done it up until now has been very mishandled and has resulted in a lot of misinterpretations of the myths simply for the sake of fandom. And yes, these people exist in Christian media as well - they're called TV evangelists.

And that's my (very heavy) two cents.

I think something that's seriously bothered me about the Gravity Falls fandom is how Ford, which has been depicted as nothing but aro, gets that depiction constantly thrown out the window to ship him with Bill Cipher. The idea that their toxic relationship could only ever be something romantic, and that friendships don't have these kinds of explosive shitty relationships is ludicrous! In my own experience, the worst abusive relationships I've seen had been between friends, not romantic parters. This fandom has been driving me bonkers because everywhere you look people are spreading this misconception that "BILLFORD IS CANON!!!" because they never take off their shipping glasses. Characters do not need romance to make their experiences complex!

Yes like the fandom thing is always "if you don't like it you can just scroll past" or whatever, but there is this point where shipping culture just gets so pervasive and unavoidable!

And it basically inherently devalues/invalidates friendships and any other type of love beside romantic or sexual (which have so much real life and storytelling merit!). Especially when it's treated as if it is the only way to view things, like it's the default, even in cases when there is literally nothing in the text to actually suggest sex/romance!

And like yeah plenty of hc and shipping has nothing to do with what is or isn't in the text. But when aro/ace identities are treated as an empty slate to project whatever on instead of as an identity in itself? When there is so much romance all over the place but you can't let us have our one (like literally one) canon character? When it gets to the point that you can't possibly think of a 'platonic explanation' for things that literally do not have to be romantic in any way? If you can't conceive of a relationship having value and depth, love and complexity without romance/sex? If you can't think of a character/storyline being interesting without it, or of someone's life being meaningful and complete without it? That's just amatonormative (aka aphobic)

And like can you see why maybe that would get frustrating for some of us to constantly see everywhere all the time?

i recently remembered DickTim Week 2024 is happening very soon and i looked at the prompts again to see if i could get anything out for it and. the Hades & Persephone AU prompt for day 1 has got me really thinking so here's a vague concept i plan to write.

i've been pretty burnt out on modern Hades & Persephone retellings because of how they always seem to fall into the same generic "innocent wide-eyed girl runs from her evil mean mother into the arms of a dark mysterious man because actually she went willingly and chose to marry him" which has gotten repetitive for my tastes. (for clarity i don't care if this retelling is your cup of tea personally, so long as you're not actively trying to rewrite the original myth and claim untrue things about it, if this is your favorite flavor i sincerely hope you enjoy the buffet i just have little interest in it since it feels overdone for me and exhausted of it's supposed commentary atp)

but? but. biblically accurate Hades & Persephone AU has me all kinds of interested. because wait listen so hear me out right. Hades!Dick and Persephone!Tim, obviously. i feel it'd be more loosely inspired by with themes and imagery (though playing with death and nature powers could be interesting, i haven't decided) rather than explicitly making them gods and all. but. something dark and fucked up where Dick and Bruce are especially estranged. maybe to do with Jason's return, maybe to do with them just clashing and having their usual explosive arguments. and Bruce knows the peace needs to be kept, if he and Dick are at odds then everyone starts to pick sides and things just fracture so he needs a peace offering.

and the peace offering is Tim.

Bruce (the stand-in for Zeus) offers up Tim. agrees to have Tim move to Bludhaven and be Dick's... whatever Dick wants him to be. knowing that with the implication comes the likelihood of Dick grooming Tim. and Tim has no real say and is hesitant to put up a real fight. he doesn't want this, he knows what this is going to imply Dick will do to him, but he also knows if he says no things have the possibility to just... fall apart. so he's the unwilling bride, dragged off to the metaphorical underworld (Bludhaven) with Dick, away from his family, his friends, the life he built.

and on the flip side, i think weirdly enough, your best pick for the Demeter stand-in is *Jason*. just, hear me out on that. not necessarily on the side of it being motherly, but on Jason being just estranged enough from the Batfamily to be the one willing to call it out for being bad and wrong and raising bloody hell to get Tim back. maybe it's because Jason wants Tim for himself, maybe it's truly out of a concern for Tim to have autonomy, i'm toying with the idea of it primarily being Tim's POV and him genuinely not knowing which of these is true. (and the truth possibly ends up being a complicated middle ground) and because i like Helena, i think you can use her as the Hekate stand in, the one who strikes a tentative alliance with Jason and tries to go find Tim and bring him back. Tim stuck with Dick, getting groomed and hyperaware of it, possibly even getting fucked the whole time as well, knowing he can't go back without causing massive issues for Dick and Bruce because well, Bruce did promise him to Dick. so he has to adjust his whole life, try to figure out being a vigilante in this new city with Dick breathing down his neck the whole time.

and then much like the ending of the myth, a sort of compromise is struck that's a shaky deal for everyone involved. Tim is put on an essential timeshare, going back and forth between Gotham, where he has friends and family and a support system, then getting dragged right back to Bludhaven with Dick in this brutal cycle that he slowly gets used to and stockholm'd into even liking it. Dick isn't so bad, once he gets used to the quirks of their unbalanced 'relationship'. the sex is even something he can adjust to as well. not quite a happy ending but one that sits in this realistic grey area that becomes Tim's life.

i will write this, eventually, but i don't know if i'll get to it before DickTim Week ends so by posting the idea i'm essentially putting it out into the world so the peer pressure holds me accountable. i just. really like the potential of making Hades/Persephone AUs as fucked up as they can be simply by adhering to the source material and making it a raw story of being stolen away and forced to like this new home you didn't ask for.

also a less fleshed-out aspect of this idea i have ties into Persephone becoming the Queen of the Underworld when she's taken and how the transition from Kore to Persephone could be reflected in Tim. how he makes the best of the worst situation and becomes something far more dangerous and dark when he's in Bludhaven, possibly takes on a new vigilante name/identity and leans into the worst quirks of his personality he tries to tamper because there's no point in not going full tilt Obsessively Weird if he has no choice anyway and it being one small way he takes back his autonomy, and that inevitably making Dick *more* into him, because he gets to see Tim finally just. let loose.

It’s been far too long since I’ve posted one of these! Might as well use the polls function for it 😊

Ok but Odysseus as the god of Puppeteering & Mind of Shadows would completely flip the story on its head. I imagine that in order to topple the gods, he’d want to do it without arousing suspicion because what kind of puppeteer would he be if he was discovered right away? So he played it sneakily. When he catches Athena’s connection, he already has her snared in his trap, a connection made that he can pull back on when the time is right. I’m not sure if he’ll still be connected to Hermes or the lost deity’s powers had overwhelm and erased it but he and Hermes will eventually meet. He does love Penelope and hates how he can’t tell her who he really is otherwise someone might catch him and ruin everything but he does put protective blessings on her and his son who might have inherited his powers, he’s gonna seal that up real quick until the time is right.

As the Trojan war comes, Odysseus played it cool but secretly made connections to the gods that appear whenever they made themselves known like Ares, Aphrodite, Apollo and Artemis. The only exception was Zeus due to him being more powerful than the rest and while he did have to drop the baby, he did save him and leave him to his minions who I imagine are puppets he made. Every death during the odyssey, Odysseus secretly saves them and puts them in his pocket dimension because of his attachment to them. When Athena leaves, he’s saddened but disappointed; I feel like a part of him wanted to give the gods a chance but after Athena left, he no longer saw any good in them and what’s going to be a divine invasion would be considered justified. He thought Athena could change, but he supposed that he was wrong…

From there, it becomes much more easier to manipulate now that Athena isn’t watching him. He knew that by revealing his name, he’ll draw Poseidon’s attention where he can make a connection using their hatred towards each other as the basis so that it can click. He’s not someone who can see prophecies like Apollo, rather he knows what to do to make things play out how he wants. He does want to go home, but the deities were getting impatient so off to Scylla he goes where he lets her eat sirens instead. Mutiny happened and while it did hurt, he never blamed his crew because he understood them and finally… He encountered Zeus. Helios was actually his target but he’ll take the top god and other ways of persuasion him to form a connection using lust. He even learns some unexpected things from the king of gods which he files away for another time due to how they made his chest feel weird.

And with that, everything is in place and soon, he’ll no longer be Odysseus. It’s like the song ‘The main character’ but in a more tragic light; as much as Odysseus loved living as a mortal, he can’t be seen as human. He’s the vessel of the forgotten deities’ anger and it’s either he fails, gets taken/hurt by the Olympian gods never to see his family again, or finally put his plan into action. He thinks himself as a puppet ironically, after all he was created to bring ruin to the gods, much like how Pandora was made to give a punishing gift to humanity.

So, he pulls the strings, ignoring the squeeze in his heart as he turns away from Zeus and wonders if Penelope could forgive him for what he’s doing.

On a less weird note: NHHDWGYHHHFHHGGFFF— YAS!1!!!1!! OMG ODYSSEUS W/ ALL HIS BEHIND THE SCENES GLORY AHFDDEWWSSSS EEEEEEEE THIS LOOKS SO FUN‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️

If I’m gonna dissect some things,,,, :

#1: auhhhh u put the Last Minute Titles I made 4 Ody’ to good use 🤩🙏 him analysing his situation so to not cause suspicion is very him, AWBGAS him establishing ‘connections’ to The Gods, probably to manipulate them by info access but also maybe these Connections r like invisible Magic Strings that Odysseus can use to weaken them when, as u put it, the time is right AKA Dimension Invasion Time omg ouggggg— either way, very kool <33.

I still think he’d have some DNA-related connections to Hermes, it mostly being there too give him a base 4 when he accesses his Godly Form :) (in my mind, Ody’ was sent into This World as a Little Shadow Blob, the first form he took was when he incarnated as Ithaca’s Newborn Prince :33)

Cries, he loves his wife & son no matter what, makes it even more of a shame about wha he’s suppose to do hehe hmmm *pockets Telemachus w/ Otherworldly Deity Genes 4 later*…

Ouch, Ody’ wanting to be at least somewhat fair, give The Gods a chance thru observation but then Athena lets her pride get in the way & now their fate of getting fucked over is permanently sealed ooooooo— just one less argument Athena, just one less argument is probably all it coulda’ taken 😙,,,

#3: everything falling into place as the story goes on, The Gods none the wiser to what is on the horizon…

#4: ah Character Feeling Way 2 Attached To Their False Identity But Very Much Needing 2 Let It Go, one of my fav tropes 😏

Speaking of character tropes: THE MAIN CHARACTER BY WILL WOOD LET’S GOOOO— ouuuuu- yes, that’s such a good song 4 Ody’ here <D✨ (mostly bc I just luv the song) & OUUUUUHHHHH—- in general, the pain of having to fulfil his purpose as a infiltrator / virus- 🥲🥲🥲 love that angst 😋.

Yeah,,,, The Lore I’ve made in my mind paints Odysseus’s whole- thing, existence very tragic, but that’s what The Greeks were all about so, still fits nicely w/ the usual cruelty in their stories !!

Bringing up The Other Deities as I’ll now call them, while their objective of reviving their Universe thru the equivalent of seeking a rat into a land owners papers is gonna be very, very disruptive to Greece’s current economy, I never rlly thought of them as. Bad. Morally grey, absolutely if not as well a bit sympathetic, but never rlly. Bad. A few of them even learn to care 4 Ody’ as they observe him growing up <), still pushing their goal onto him n guiding him to fulfil his purpose, but they also make sure to treat him as a person. A young person that needs to be nurtured. (mostly 4 the plan to work out smoothly but there’s some care 4 their infiltrators wellbeing,,,)

Despite all of this, Ody’ is still not having a great time dealing w/ everything,,,, obviously. It’s a pretty morbid way to live.

Silly Game Time: The literal night sky announced via its Spot(stars)ify account that it will be releasing a new constellation. Very exciting! What or who do you think it should be?

I think it should be either another dog-based constellation (specifically one where it has an open mouth and is facing the moon like it’s trying to catch/eat the moon), a heart, or perhaps the William (Bill Cipher) constellation from the Book of Bill.

Honestly since theyre organic and thats like MAJOR to the themes and plot of jetters i dont think i would personally, i treat jetters- basically all media i draw and love with an intense reverence and work within the boundaries set by a media! unless i deem creative decisions kinda dumb, arbitrary or shallow... Jetters being Not dumb, arbitrary or shallow and actually meaningful and well thought out in virtually every deviation from classic bomberman makes me hesitant to do so. No shame to anyone who does! I just have an incredibly strict sense of the things i make for myself, i could fathom an interpretation like that either happening if i was payed to do so or if i got a really cool meaningful idea.

If anything how i draw non jetters bombermen as a result of jetters look more organic nowadays.. drew these fuckers MUCH more robotic before watching and honestly to anyone who remembers back then ive improved.
