I think when defending Vriska a lot of people try to argue that Vriska's Bad at doing Bad stuff when really she's quite good at it. One of the first things she does in Homestuck is orchestrate the creation of Bec Noir and June's ascension to god-tier so it's not exactly accurate to say she's bad at manipulation, the amount of trolls she had to kill to feed her lusus as well as her fight against Bec Noir proves she's pretty good at fighting/killing too.

I think this characterisation is kind of a response to the less media literate segments of the Homestuck fandom's portrayal of Vriska as a cruel, unfeeling, irredeemable monster instead of you know, an abused teenage girl. Which is of course even less accurate. She lives up to the ideals of Troll society sure but she feels fucking miserable about it and pretty much everything she does is the result of either her horrific upbringing, direct malicious interference or her misguided attempts to make up for previous misdeeds that often only end up making things worse for the people she cares about.

TL;DR we don't have to pretend Vriska's incapable of cruelty to acknowledge that she #did nothing wrong and doing so just kinda leads to poor interpretations of her character.
