This Week in BL - Screw everything else inject On1y into my damn veins
Organized, in each category, with ones I'm enjoying most at the top.
Aug 2024 Week 4
Ongoing Series - Thai
Monster Next Door (Thai Thurs Gaga ) eps 5-6 of 12 - Extreme introvert dealing with a very hot, very drunk, very affectionate extrovert was an excellent experience all around. āI was drunk and talking out of my ass, but I wasnāt lyingā maybe one of the worldās greatest confessions. How meta that heās checking out the book of the story that heās in. Carry on boys, very enjoyable, very Thai BL.
My Love Mix-Up Th (Fri YT) ep 12 fin - Itās cute. They are all very cute. I do like it when high school BL gives us a coming out sequence. I know itās old-fashioned, but itās a trope that goes with this particular setting really well, and I just like it when itās done nicely. Iām not sure I needed it to totally dominate the final episode of the series. But it was fine.
I gotta say, Fourth is an absolutely outstanding actor. He really did knocked it out of the park in this last episode especially.Ā
In conclusion:
It was fine and it was charming, but it was also a little lackluster. Thailand managed to take one of Japan's softest cutest most bonkers BLs in recent memory and make it softer and cuter and... dull. They did this by watering it down. JBLs almost always have an edge to them, even the rom-coms, by dulling the edge, MLMU lost a great deal of the sparkle and tension as well. What an office setting managed to mostly maintain in the consummate hands of TayNew felt somewhat lackluster when handed off to the next generation and a high school setting. Cherry Magic was a lovely reinterpretation, Mix Up was an amateur's watercolor rendition of a colorful oil painting. Am I being harsh? G4 tried their best, and Fourth turned in some outrageously good acting in the latter half. But the show? It was fine. If you like water colors and you haven't seen (and loved) Kieta Hatsukoi. 8/10
This Love Doesn't Have Long Beans (Fri iQIYI) ep 8 fin - This was the first hint we got that the lead's relationship was anything more than sexual. And it was utilized for a breakup?! JJ and Wan's friendship is the best thing about this show. PWan selling JJ out to Methas was great. I was modestly delighted by the big fuck off ownership engagement ring. I admire a boy who likes to mark his territory with bling. I actually thought this was a decent final episode. If very rushed. I know, in general this ending was objectively weak, but I grinned the entire time, so I canāt really complain that much.
Final thoughts?
A story about a kid who infiltrates a cooking competition under false pretenses and then has to deal with the consequences when he falls in love with the head chef. The side couple is a poor little rich boy meets physical therapist (morality chain). The core friendships are excellent and the chemistry cannot be faulted across the (charcuterie) board. What this show lacks in substance it makes up for in health code violations. It was all chili all the time. Considering that the plot centered on betrayal but the romantic relationship never sweetened enough to balance that bitterness; one could be forgiven for throwing this one in the compost. But I got over all its weaknesses in flavor balancing for an ultimately satisfying meal, with a great dessert course. I've always loved spicy food. Plus the blooper reels were fantastic. 8/10
Addicted Heroin (Thai Tues WeTV) ep 2 of 10 - I like the side couple a lot. Itās nice to see that dynamic developed (as it wasn't in the CBL version). Of course, Thailand leans into a secondary couple, but I also like the super popular jock + geeky boy who couldnāt care less. You know what? Iām actually really enjoying this. And yes, I AM biased because it's August. (Wait, that could be taken several different ways this month. But you know what I mean.) Anygay, this is a lot softer than the original, and so Hero is much more of a pining character and less harsh. But I'm still enjoying it. I like the stepbrothers trope (we donāt get it very much from Thailand), and I enjoy the beats and pulses of this particular story. We will see if it derails into inconsequence and lack of conflict the way My Love Mixup did. Ā
Sunset X Vibes (Sat iQIYI) ep 11 of 12 - Iām enjoying this show but it shouldāve been just 10 eps. Itās feeling bloated at this juncture. That said, I loved our little GL kiss. Very pretty. I also really like the bit with Sam and Yo flirting with each other. Sam trying to get Yo to call him P'Sam was fucking brilliant. And then slipping in all of those nongs. Delightful. Linguistic negotiation, it's what's for dinner... along with Sam's d**k apparently. I frankly did not think they would take this couple that far. So, thank you very much everybody involved.
Battle of the Writers (Sun YT) ep 4 of 12 - I do enjoy watching Yim freak out and fall in love all over again. The reality is still better for me than the fantasy parts, but itās all fun enough. The magic mushrooms bit was odd. In fact, there is definitely a core tenor of ODD going on with the show. Which Iām accustomed to from Japan but Iām not really sure about from Thailand. Thus I remain engaged but suspicious of this BL.Ā
I Saw You in My Dream (Weds Gaga) ep 6 of 12 - Yu wants to take his baby on a trip, gets thwarted by his younger brother. Ouch. I really do think itās time for Ai to tell Yu whatās going on with his dreams! Drunken boyfriend bolster pillow is a fav trope of mine. As usual, Iām catching second lead syndrome. What? I liked the rich boy badminton player. And then he picked up a guitar. Oh well.
The Trainee (Sun YouTube) ep 8 of 12 - No one cares about the hets. He was jelly? Cute. Also kinda an arse, by hey this is BL.Ā
Ongoing Series - Not Thai
The On1y One (Taiwan Thurs Gaga) eps 1-2 of 12 - announced in 2023, high school, stepbrothers, and is reputed to be high heat. Based on a novel Mou Mou + the Your Name Engraved Herein team.
ARE YOU READY? I'M GOING TO NOT SO QUIETLY LOSE MY DAMN MIND
This is old-school BL and itās bloody fantastic. Tsundere seme to beat all tsundere (smartest + tallest + bestest at everything but people) meets socially-ept cutie smart-ass protag.
They living together by end of ep 1 and start kissing by end of ep 2.
There is an Unknown quality to this, and that I love. Also, and ironic to say this while Addicted Heroin Th is airing, but this REALLY reminds me of Addicted. Itās so fucking good. I am all in on this show. Shut up while this eats my life.
Cosmetic Playlover (Japan Tues Gaga) eps 5-6 of 8 - Of course! The POV shift to the seme character at ep 5! How could I forget? Japan loves this beat! AND.... The running of the gays. And a use of a first name! So darling. Also some crazy great communication and conversation that is NOT a hallmark of Japan. Sahashi is so very possessive. I loved the switch that went on in his brain and the mania in his eyes when he thought someone else was interested in Natsume. I continue to love this.
I Hear the Sunspot AKA Hidamari ga Kikoeru (Japan Weds Gaga) ep 10 of 12 - Iām never going to like Maya. Sorry. And the leads were separated for most of this episodes so it was largely disappointing. I did like the insight into the way T sees the world, and sees the alienation of a disability and what it's dong to his friend. Itās very empathic. Heās such an appealing character in his obtuse bull-headed way.
Seoul Blues (Korea Fri? YouTube) ep 2 of 8 - Itās intriguing, and I'm happy to have anything from Korea on my dash. But, like Blue Boys, Iām not entirely sure if I like it or not.
First Note Of Love (Taiwan Mon Gaga) eps 3-4 of 12 - This may be Taiwan but Iām still in the "no singing" camp. Iām getting a slightly better chemistry feel off the leads in this episode. Iām not sure if theyāre keeping it stiff because the younger character is under age or if itās just that the actors arenāt there yet? (In other words is this a directing choice or a performance issue?)
Takara's Treasure AKA Takara No Vidro (Japan Mon Gaga) ep 8 of 10 - I've finally come down firmly on the fact that itās the uneven power distribution (in terms of interest and enthusiasm for the relationship) that I dislike about this show. Generally, I like a power dynamic differential, kinky and all that. But this particular dynamic, when itās the weaker personality thatās so much more into the stronger one? I never like it, unless it engages a serious pivot at some point.Ā (See My Personal Weatherman or Takara & Amagi.)
It's airing but...
Sugar Dog Life (Japan Sun grey) ep 3 of 10 - I was really loving this one but I can't find ep 3 anywhere so I guess I gotta wait it out. I hope I get to see it eventually.
4 Minutes (Sat Gaga) eps 1-6 of 8 - Gaga picked this one up so we can watch it there. If I have time, I'll get caught up and put it into rotation.
In case you missed it
Meet You at the Blossom (China) - I'm eating crow, binging the fucker, and live blogging.
The Time of Fever AKA Unintentional Love Story 2 (Korea movie) trailer IS COMING IN SEPTEMBER!!!! (Yeah this is gonna sit here until then).
Next Week Looks Like This:
Upcoming BLs for 2024 are listed here. This list is not kept updated, so please leave a comment if you know something new or RP with additions.

2024: BL Year in Review
(The fact that I'm doing this hours before the year changes is actually the least surprising things of 2024)
Total BLs watched in 2024: 21
BLs watched that aired this year: 12
(BLs currently airing: 2)
(BLs watched this year that started in 2023: 3)
BLs watched that aired before this year: 9
________
10 random superlatives to wrap up my year (these are from series that have aired this year or finished airing this year):
1. The BL that predicted most accurately (the date of legalization of same-sex marriage in Thailand)
Cherry Magic
It shot up to my Top 10 favourite BLs the moment I watched it. It's amazing and everyone should watch it, actually.
2. The most Bromance BL (is it a coincidence that my first two superlatives are both TayNew series? You can't prove anything.)
Peaceful Property
Another BL everyone should watch. It's technically not a BL, but it's a better BL than a lot of the ones I've watched before so.
3. The most average BL
My Love Mix Up Th
Very cute, but unlike Cherry Magic, I think I actually liked the original (Kieta Hatsukoi) better. It was nice, but very average.
4. My most loved omegaverse BL (...yes there were two. But to be fair, it depends on what you consider a 'BL')
Tadaima, Okaeri
It was so adorable. It had a sort of non-traditional ABO relationship (?), but I love how they used ABO to address other (more relevant-) socio-cultural issues.
5. The BL with the most wasted potential
The Trainee
It started off amazing, but the graph became a straight line (pun intended) somewhere in the middle and then went steadily downhill. It had so much potential, the ending physically hurt.
6. The most wacky BL (that I loved)
Century of Love
It's actually pretty great, but it's just so wacky (which makes it more adorable honestly). It kept surprising me too, which is always nice (...except when it's not).
7. The BL I (know I'm gonna) have the most love-hate relationship with
ThamePo
This is the first (hopefully only) BL that made me sob in the first episode. But it's so good. I almost cried twice in the second episode too, this is awful. (Then why do I love it?)
8. BL that gave me the most whiplash
The Heart Killers
If you haven't guessed already, I am insane about and insanely obsessed with FadelStyle. If we're watching the same series, I know you are too. :)
9. BL with the worst crash landing (26372892 dead, everyone else injured)
Last Twilight
If you watched this, you know. I have nothing else to add.
10. My favourite BL of the year
We Are
I'm very sure anyone who even clicked on my blog in April-July this year knows this. This silly little show just hit a chord in me and it never stopped ringing.
Honourable mentions:
1. BL with the most episodes ever in Thai BL history
Perfect 10 Liners
24 episodes. That's all I have to say.
2. My most loved new pairing
MarcPoon
The above gif is moments before The ChainPun KissTM. And let me tell you. They didn't only understand the assignment, they showed everyone else exactly how to do it too.
GL version:
1. The one that really tried
23.5
2. The best GL (I have watched)
Pluto
Please watch it.
If this post seems hurried, it kinda was š-
I'm just glad I could get this out in time T-T
Thank you so much if you got this far! āŗļøš«¶š¼
Here, have a new year's cake hehe š

My Love Mix-Up Thailand
#gem4th#gemfot#my love mix up th#mlmu th#fourth nattawat#gemini norawit#msp#my school president#Fourth's move in the 4th gif will live rent free in my mind#as a dancer I can say it's actually just really embodied movement that a lot of people can't do#i also wish both of them just got to explore and play with their characters in the series as much as they did in this one scene#i had literally been having the thought last week about how stiff and rehearsed so much of the series seemed forced to be#especially in comparison with the improv they were clearly allowed to do in MSP and Moonlight Chicken#and yesterday i read someone's review of the MSP episode of Our Skyy where they discuss 4th's full-body style of acting#which i wholly agree with and have written about (but it got eaten so maybe i'll have to redo it at some point now)#anyway enjoy the gifs everyone#atom x kongthap

As per usual, I humbly request your thoughts! Reblogs are always appreciated and welcomed, not only do I see them easier but it lets other people see my work. I will do my best to answer all I can. Iām trying to get better at keeping up so thanks everyone for staying with me <3
Your feedback will help in this and future works (and WiPs, I havenāt forgotten those!)
Love you all. You are appreciated and your are worthy. Treat yourself with care. š
"So... this is what it looks like today?" You aim your camera at the sky outside your window, "sorry, the screen is kinda in the way."
You let out a nervous chuckle and flip the camera to yourself. You make a silly face. You were never overly fond of your image on the screen but the vlogs help. Like a little diary, mostly for yourself. You and your seven followers on Insta.
You bat your lashes and fix the clip in your hair, "oh, I got this free. Yeah, I bought a new hair oil and they threw this in the bag." You let your thoughts run wild from your tongue. You found a journal too daunting, the blank lines leaving you just as empty. This is easier. "Anyway, I shouldn't have spent the money to begin with."
You give another splintered laugh. The one you let out when you're anxious, or scared, or happy, or even mad.Ā You bite your lip and catch yourself in your digitized reflection. You stop and turn your camera to your bedroom.
"Today, I'm gonna clean this mess. Me and you guys together."
You scour the room with the lens. Your laundry is piled on the floor and you have a stack of books you need to put on the shelf. It isn't the worst it's been but it's getting cluttered.
"But first, we'll have breakfast, can't start the stream on an empty stomach," you chirp and nearly drop the phone, "oops, uh..." You fix your grip and check the number in the corner. You have one viewer; on a good day, it's three, most days, it's just you talking to the void.
You go into the kitchen, just down the short hall from your bedroom, opening into your living room. You go to the counter and prop up the phone so the camera is on you again. You tap your fingers and hum.
"What should we have for breakfast?" You ask. You don't feel as crazy talking to yourself even if there's really no one watching. "Oo, French toast. Gotta use up the eggs."
You go to the fridge and pull out the eggs and the milk. You bring them back to the counter, shuffling around for a bowl, a whisk, and the cinnamon.
You mix up your ingredients and dip the bread, one piece at a time. You put on a skillet and fry up the slices, presenting a stack of three to the camera. You smile and dust some icing sugar over the top.
āProbably shouldn't have all this sugar for breakfast,ā you shrug at the camera, āalright, quick breakā¦āĀ
You put the stream onto the āback soonā page and take your plate to the small foldout table against the wall. You're not a fan of eating on camera. You finish and rinse up before snatching your phone up again.
You return to your bedroom and put the phone on a middle shelf and flip the stream back to live. Still that one viewerā¦
āAnyway, I'm back,ā you wave at the lens.
You hesitate, looking around as you stand straight and spin. Cleaning, right. Before you can set to work, the phone dings.
A message?
You go back to your phone and squint at the chat bubble floating up.
āLooked delicious too.ā
āIt was,ā you agree with a grin, āthanks.ā
āDon't mean the toast.ā
The next message has you blinking. Your nape burns. They can't meanā¦ you clear your throat and giggle.
āWell, let's get started,ā you back up and clap your hands, āyou know, I've been so carried away with work. This place is a pigsty.ā
You sit on the floor and sort through the clothes. You toss them into the basket as you sit in silence. You stop yourself and glance at the phone.
āHow about some tunes?āĀ
You walk on your knees to your bedside and turn on your bluetooth speaker. You go to your phone and find a playlist before pulling the stream back to full screen. As you do, you hear a noise you've never heard before.
āBourbonBear has tipped.ā Huh? Really?
āOh, thanks, er, BourbonBear,ā you giggle around the name, āhow nice. Maybe one day I can afford a proper camera for this, huh?ā
You smile and go back to the dirty clothes. You quickly ball up a pair of panties and shove them in the basket. You carry on until they're all untangled.
You move on and tidy your desk, bending underneath to gather up a few loose pens. You make your way around the bedroom, putting away books, fixing the blankets on the bed, and straightening the little figurines on the shelf above the bed.
You grab the stick vacuum and suck up the dirt and proclaim your task done. It took a lot longer than you thought. It's after eleven. The one viewer is still there.
āWhew, okay, I'm gonna get myself washed up and go to the park. Maybe I'll post that later,ā you give a thumbs up next to your head as you talk to the phone, āthank you.ā
You end the stream and let out a sigh. Your videos aren't much and you doubt they're very interesting but it's like venting for you. Almost like having an invisible friend. You think you will take some pictures of the flowers to share.
š§ø
You take your usual path through the park. The walks help you unwind your worries. You try to come after work at least a couple days during the week and both days on the weekend. You find the mindlessness of the routine to be calming.
The deeper you get into the wooded length of the path, you slow to admire the birds in the branches and the critters crawling in the brush. You take out your phone and snap a few photos of a blue jay before it wings away shyly. You smile and flip the cam, smiling as you take a goofy selfie. You can add that to your post.
The path winds ahead and you follow it in the din, listening to the river just down the incline to your left and the tweeting from the sky. You lift your face and inhale the woodsy scent. The sudden crack of a twig startles you and you spin to face the noise. There's no one there. Sometimes you forget other people are free to just walk on through.
You chuckle at yourself and continue on. The path leads out to a suburban street where you like to look at the houses. They're much more spacious and pretty than your grimy brick apartment building.
You come out from the shade of the trees and wander along the avenue. There's a mailbox painted to look like the house it stands before and a little nook for second hand children's books to be borrowed through the neighbourhood. Sometimes you picture yourself living in one of those houses though you don't think it could ever truly be.
As you crane your head, you sense a shadow in your peripheral. You're walking a bit slow. You sidle to the side to get out of the way of the other pedestrian. When no one passes, you look back. No one.
You must be imagining things. You shrug and plod along. You're already thinking of what kind of tea you'll have when you get in.
š§ø
You sit down with your mug of ginger citrus tea and set to editing your post. You add a light filter to the photos as you shuffle through them on your laptop. The process is slow as the computer is nearly five years old now and chuffing on its 4GB drive. You get to the selfie you snapped, a stop.
You lean in to get a better glimpse of the background. It's fuzzy but there's a figure just over your shoulder. How could that be? You looked and there was no one there. That's so strange.
You stare as a chill courses through you. You're thankful you hadn't put your earphones in. You wouldn't have heard whoever it was and they may have even snuck up on you. Or maybe it's just a trick of the light.
You hit āpostā and try to shake off the foreboding. It's nothing. You're being silly. Besides, you're home and safe now. Next time, you'll be more alert.
A message pops up. You stare at the dot over the chat bubble. You tap with your thumb and bring up the DMs.
'Stream tonight?' BourbonBear asks.
You tilt your head. You already did some today. You're tired and want to lie down and enjoy your time off. You type back 'sorry, not tonight. tomorrow <3' and another notification vibrates. A comment on your latest post.
'Pretty sweater', also from BourbonBear. You heart their comment and leave a thanks below.
You flip back to the selfie. You can't really see your sweater in the picture, just the scalloped knitting of the collar. Well, you suppose it does look cute. You put your phone down and leave it on your desk. That's enough Insta for today.
š§ø
You time your shopping trip for the least busy hour. It's early and the store is almost empty except for employees stacking bread on shelves or wandering listlessly around the deli. You have your phone in the basket of the cart, aimed at you as you roll it along slowly and check your list.
The stream is just as empty. It's only just started but you don't expect too many people to be up at this hour. You stop and grab a loaf of sourdough, checking the date before showing it to the lens and putting it in the cart. You smile and announce the next item.
"Strawberries... you know I was thinking I might get raspberries instead," you say, catching the eye of one of the yawning employees. You must seem like a weirdo. It's why you typically don't film in public.
As you roll around to the fruit, you notice the count change. One viewer. You choose a basket of raspberries and show those. You see a message float up; morning.
You smile and return the greeting softly and place the berries down carefully beside your phone. You need yogurt to go with the berries.
You work down the list, making some substitutes as you tick off each item. You linger in the ice cream section a bit too long and talk yourself out of a gallon of rocky road. You lean on the handle of the cart and smile down at the lens.
"Going to check out," you say, "see you all later."
All? There's still just the one. You end the stream and take your phone out of the basket.
You wheel around to checkout and line up at the only open till. You put your items up as you greet the cashier with a smile. She seems tired as she gives a dull response.
As you put the yogurt on the belt, you sense someone join the queue behind you. You glance over as a large man stands only feet away. He's tall and burly and staring at you. Maybe he heard you talking to your audience, or he would think, yourself. You continue to unload your groceries.
"Never tried those," he comments as you take out a box of strawberry Pocky.
You pause and hold them up, chuckling nervously, as you do.
"Pretty good," you answer, "I eat way too many."
You notice the man doesn't have a basket or a cart. That realisation needles under your skin. Maybe he's just getting lotto or smokes?
"You like sweet stuff."
"Too much," you squeak even though it doesn't sound like a question.
He just stares, not saying a word. You swallow tightly and pull the last few items out of the cart and get behind it to wheel it through the lane. As you do, he looms closely, adding to the sweat gathering on your lower back.
You roll along and wait for the cashier to ring through the rest of your things. She bags them up neatly in two large paper bags. You pay with your card and thank her as you lift the first into your cart. The man behind you moves forward and grabs the second, startling you.
"Got it," he says as he places it with the other, squeezing by you, crowding you.
"Oh, excuse me, sir," you stammer, "oh," you lean on the cart to roll it to the end of the lane as you make space between you and the stranger. "Thanks, er, uh... thanks."
You turn and grab the handle, jittering. He's really weirding you out. Especially as you realise he's walked right by the cashier. He's following you.
"I can help get āem in your car," he offers in a drawl.
"Oh, that's alright, I... bus," you cringe as you realise you've said too much.
"I could drive you. I have a truck."
"No thank you," you walk faster, the cart rattling with your pace.
"Why not?"
"I don't know you, erm, sorry--"
"You don't?" He catches up and shoves his phone in your face, your Insta profile glaring back at you, "I paid for the milk, maybe the berries..."
"What?" You stop, just by the door and turn to him. "I don't--"
"You haven't eaten, have you? I'll take you for French toast. That's your favourite."
"Um," you blink at him as your eyes tinge, "I don't..."
"You got me through a hard campaign, just wanna say thank you," he adjusts his cap and you notice the pin on it. He's a veteran. Oh, 'campaign'.Ā
āJust got back home," he shifts on his feet, a meek gesture for such a large man, "and... your videos helped me remember it. Helped me hold onto it in the sh-- in the stuff."
"I... wow, okay, that's... I'm glad I could do that."
"I really don't mind giving you a ride. Lots of weirdos on the bus," he insists.
"That's nice but--"
"Please," he softens his tone, "been a while since I sat down and had breakfast without worrying about the sky falling."
You shudder and grip the cart tight. You don't know how to say no. You didn't think about who was watching. You always just assumed they were bots. Then you think of the chaching noise and the amount flashing on the screen.
"BourbonBear?" You ask.
"Yeah," he cracks a crooked smile and smooths his hand over his thick beard. "Everyone calls me Syv.ā

Sebastian Stan on His Cristian Mungiu Film, the āBrutalistā Role He Almost Played, Actors on Actors, and Battling for āThe Apprenticeā
The surprise Golden Globe winner tells IndieWire why the industry remains "apprehensive" about his Donald Trump role and about new indie projects with Mungiu and Justin Kurzel.
BY RYAN LATTANZIO
If you donāt watch Marvel movies, then you donāt know Bucky Barnes, which means you only know Sebastian Stan as the also-indie actor behind films like 2024ās āA Different Manā and āThe Apprentice.ā Both movies have put him in the awards race, and possibly the Oscar running, especially after his grimly funny, pathos-spiked turn as a self-loathing, out-of-options actor with neurofibromatosis in Aaron Schimbergās āA Different Manā won him a surprise Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. That night, he was also nominated for Best Actor in a Drama for āThe Apprentice,ā where he plays a ā70s New York-era Donald Trump.
Had scheduling gone a different path, he wouldāve starred in Brady Corbetās also-Oscar-contending āThe Brutalist,ā but Stan had plenty on his plate last year and into this one, setting him up for his biggest awards season run yet. His transformative Trump performance in director Ali Abbasiās āThe Apprenticeā has been celebrated since the filmās 2024 Cannes premiere. Top distributors shunned the film until rookie releaser Briarcliff Entertainment got on board in August 2024, billionaire investor Dan Snyder tried to wrangle creative control and block the release, and, eventually, Stanās peers declined the chance to speak with the American-Romanian actor in Varietyās popular Actors on Actors series, a major platform for awards contenders. Stan has been candid about not finding a sparring partner for the publicationās viral program. Why not? People donāt want to go near a movie about the incumbent president, including American audiences ($4 million domestic).
Speaking with IndieWire over the phone, Stan said that once he went public with why he wasnāt participating in Actors on Actors, āA lot of friends called me and said, āHey letās go do this together.ā That was obviously very thoughtful and very kind, but for us, Ali, Jeremy [Strong, who plays lawyer Roy Cohn], that was nothing really new.ā (Last November, Varietyās editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh told IndieWire, āWe invited [Stan] to participate in āActors on Actors,ā the biggest franchise of awards season, but other actors didnāt want to pair with him because they didnāt want to talk about Donald Trump.ā)
Stan continued, āWe had been facing that kind of a thing since Cannes, whether it had even been photo shoots promoting the film, or certain people that were like, āWe donāt want to go near this.ā Every interview since Cannes, weāve been asked, āHowās the reception been? Why do you think studios are apprenehsive?ā This is sadly the reality. We have a lot of people who love this film or say they do, but when it comes down to jumping in the fire a little bit ā¦ hesitancy is understandable, to some extent.ā
While understanding the emotional component around not wanting to see a movie about a leader and convicted felon who is on TV every second of the news day, Stan said, āHowever, around hesitancy, thereās also a slippery slope toward indifference, and that complements fear. Thatās the only distinction we have to keep trying to make. You can rightfully own, āHey, this isnāt for me,ā or āI donāt want to go there.ā But in terms of āIām too worried, Iām too scared, I donāt want to get in hot water,ā then itās like, whatās the next thing that becomes OK to not want to deal with it because itās uncomfortable? We didnāt understand what was so uncomfortable about the movie.ā
āThe Apprenticeā received mixed reviews at Cannes, though I remember in my festival screening being surrounded by European journalists laughing their heads off because they see Trump as a comic figure. Many Americans do not, and with āThe Apprentice,ā we donāt yet have the benefit of hindsight because weāre still living in the Trump era.
āUsually what happens is you look at movies like āNixonā or the movie āDownfall,ā which is about Hitler, [the movies] happen years later. Weāve had time to process our emotions about it, and weāve had some distance so we can go back and look at what went wrong or what we [believed] at the time,ā Stan said. āYou donāt have that luxury [with āThe Apprenticeā]. We donāt have the luxury of not dealing with this person.ā
Going back to his moment winning the Globe for āA Different Man,ā itās been a mixed blessing for double nominee Stan.
āThere was this unbelievable kind of moment at the Globes that I never really thought was ever going to happen, and you have a brief moment of that, and suddenly, anything can flip,ā he said of L.A. going into panic mode right after the Globes amid the ongoing wildfires in Southern California. āIn terms of Mother Natureā¦ at the end of the day, it really is just people. Weāre all in the same boat there. Thereās nothing to differentiate or anything. We are all pretty much in the same boat.ā
After heās finished with awards season duties, Stan expects to head to Europe in March to film the new film from Palme dāOr-winning auteur Cristian Mungiu, which brings the ā4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Daysā filmmakerās usual moral ambiguity into a real-life case of abuse in Romania. Heāll be reuniting with āA Different Manā star Renate Reinsve for the film, which will shoot in Romanian, English, and Norwegian.
āWith all of these smaller indies, I always feel even while Iām on the plane going there, Iām always worried, āIs the financing going to come through? Itās on its way,ā Stan said. āHeās been up there with me for a few years with filmmakers from Romania where Iāve been calling him trying to find a way to work with him, where I can speak Romanian as well. We finally found this story, which is about a Romanian family whoās moved to Norway and then ends up in this very complicated trial. Thereās a system [that] investigates cases if thereās ever been physical abuse in the household between the parents or the kids. They go investigating the family for an incident, and it leads to this trial. It happened before the pandemic, and it became national news. There were a lot of religious communities that came to their side, and itās really interesting and quite complicated.ā
Stan has also been instrumental in shepherding the next film from Australian āThe Orderā director Justin Kurzel, āBurning Rainbow,ā about a true Waco-style FBI standoff that brought down a pro-marijuana campground in Michigan a week before 9/11. Heās attached to star in the story of Tom Crosslin and Rolland Rohm, a gay couple defending their land amid police investigations linked to a Rainbow Farm festival-associated killing and their marijuana plants.
āThey were raising a child as well,ā Stan said. āThey were real activists in some ways, and they were very controversial as well because they were running this Rainbow Farm, which was like the start of this Woodstock-style festival that was bringing all these people together, advocating for legalizing marijuana. It was also such a loving place. They were attracting a lot of attention from local authorities, and a lot of controversies were going on down there. It all happened before 9/11, so there are many people who donāt know this story. But Iāve known about it for six years or something. Iāve been tracking it through different evolutions, and it finally landed with Justin. I was tracking him now for two years to basically give me a chance, and finally, I think weāve got to go and find all the other people.ā
As for āThe Brutalist,ā Stan was announced to star in Brady Corbetās Golden Globe Best Picture winner in 2019, but scheduling changes on āThe Apprenticeā interfered. (āThe Brutalistā shot in early 2023; āThe Apprenticeā didnāt film until that fall after a few false starts.) Stan wouldāve played Joe Alwynās role, Harry Lee Van Buren, the pompous son of Guy Pearceās moneyed industrialist who exploits Adrien Brodyās Jewish-Hungarian architect.
āIām glad that the timing [didnāt work out] ā¦ The difficulty of that movie is astounding. What they were able to achieve. Some of us would be attached. I was sort of the last one, but then [Corbet] started to go. Because āApprenticeā kept getting pushed, those two started to overlap at one point. I wasnāt available for it, but having seen the movie, Joe is amazing in it, and I would have been too old by that point anyway. I feel like it worked out for the best. It makes total sense with Guy being his father,ā Stan said.
As for how Stanās indie roles fit into the Marvel orbit, especially as heāll be seen in āThunderboltsā this spring again as Bucky Barnes, he said, āIf I hadnāt had so many opportunities with Marvel with that character alone and creatively what I got to do, I donāt know if I would have been as driven to go in this other direction as well and try to find things that Iām not always at the top of mind for. I believe, like Brady Corbet, films are a directorsā medium. It is about the filmmaker. We have to trust the filmmakers. The best films to me, in my experiences, were with really strong directors with these strong points of view. Itās been amazing to watch Brady. I was attached to that film for a long time, going back to 2019, so Iāve known of that movie and have known Brady since we were kids auditioning. I would see him at casting calls, him and his mom. Even watching him up there on Sunday felt like Iād been weirdly attached to that story as well.ā

2024 Recap: āØA SummaryāØ
Post your most popular and/or favourite edit/gifset/analysis for each month (itās okay to skip months!)
@troubled-mind and @my-rose-tinted-glasses brought this back, and @lurkingshan mentioned me in hers.
January:
most popular - Last Twilight Ep 12 (Finale) Stray Thoughts
favorites - An Apology to Ossanās Love and The Novelist, and Goblin is One of the Best Shows Ever Made
Seems I decided to cope with Last Twilightās disappointment by capping off three big catchups. I am still so glad that I went back to Ossanās Love and The Novelist to watch them properly. I still think these shows get a bad reputation, and Iām curious to see how the Thai version lands with audiences. I feel like I could also say so much more about Goblin, because Iāve also been considering a rewatch.
February:
most popular - Quick Post about How Great It Is to Be a J-BL Fan
favorites - My first interaction with @happypotato48, Love for Loveās Sake Finale, Drama Shower Explainer, My Post About How Much I Love Dynamite
What a fun month! I made a new friend, and found a new favorite show! I was so correct about how much Japanse QL we were getting and how much weāve gotten in the past year. Though I was disappointed in the end of Drama Shower, Iām still glad that MBS is making BLā¦and whatever Red Blue is (I want to watch it so bad). My love for Dynamite has only grown since I wrote that post. I need to see so much more Aungpao this year.
March:
most popular - Love is Better the Second Time Around Ep 2 Stray Thoughts
favorites - Perfect Propose Finale, Cherry Magic TH Finale, Cherry Magic Anime Finale
It really was unexpected that we got two good adaptations of Cherry Magic in the same year, both of which would supplant the original adaptation for me. I think the Thai live action might be the best one for viewers, but damn is the anime still my favorite. Perfect Propose also may have been short, but that show has stuck with me. I still think about Kai giving Hiro the first good sleep heās had in forever.
April:
most popular - Threatening people to tag Unknown spoilers
favorites - A āviolenceā ask about I used to shout out Tadaima, Okaeri.
This month looks relatively quiet for me, but holy shit was Tadaima, Okaeri unexpected. I was not expecting one of my favorite shows of the year to be an omegaverse husbands becoming dads show.
May:
most popular - Asking other BL fans how often weād seen a 69 in BL
favorites - My Post About Why I Donāt Like We Are, My Wandee Goodday Check In
Man, I really hoped that Wandee Goodday would be good. Iām still flabbergasted by how badly that show lost me. Oyei and Cher were so important to me. Pour one out for the homies.
June:
most popular and favorite - Love Sea: Tongrak is Kind of an Asshole, and I Like It
other favorites - My Love Mix Up TH: The Adaptation Changes to the Class Play
Becoming a fan of MAME was not something I ever expected of myself, and yet here we are. Iāve now enjoyed three of her shows in a row, and supported another adaptation of her work. I also am so sad that MLMU wasnāt something I could enjoy. I was so amped after Cherry Magic TH and had real hope that this could also be fantastic.
July:
most popular - I Hear the Sunspot Ep 5 Stray Thoughts
You can tell I was traveling this month. I was quiet.
August:
most popular - Benās Big BL Blurb
favorites - Knock Knock, Boys! review, Office Romance Meditation on The Trainee and Other Shows
There were too many episodes to catch up on after traveling, so I dropped Stray Thoughts. It was probably for the best, because it took up a lot of time, and it made me grumpy to write about shows that were in a slog. Iāve enjoyed writing more focused pieces since.
September:
most popular - Horniest Sex Scenes Ask
favorites - The Trainee Reflection on Adulthood, Happy of the End Review, I Hear the Sunspot Wasted Taichi As a Character
The Trainee was so solid that I wrote about it two months in a row! Unfortunately it coincided with two J-BL losses that I had to mark.
October:
most popular and favorite - Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo: We Are So Fucking Back
other favorites - An Apology to The Miracle of Teddy Bear, Love in the Big City Part 1: Itās Gay, Peaceful Property: Thereās Nothing Noble About Being Poor
What an incredible month for me! I finished one of the best shows we never got to see properly in 2022, we got a fantastic adaptation of one of the best books I read this year, and Hwang Da Seul came back with an absolute banger.
November:
most popular - Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo reaction
favorites - Love in the Big City Part 2: The Weight of Homophobia, Making a Clown of Myself at the Beginning of Your Sky, Benās Big BL Blurb 2: Fall is Finally Here, Blue Canvas of Youthful Days: BL is So Good When The Characterization Holds
I feel like I must have had a lot of time to write this month. I still stand by what I said about Blue Canvas at this point, even if the finale threw a lot of this away. I also highlighted my Your Sky post as an example of how exciting the beginning of a new show can be before it veers off and loses steam.Ā
December:
most popular - Benās Big BL Blurb 3: Blue Canvas of Youthful Days Blew It, But I Still Recommend It
favorites - Random QL Superlatives 2024, Our Youth: āDonāt Do It At Schoolā
I really love the end of the year posts as a time to reflect on everything we watched. What really stood out for me this year was how much I just let go. Iām glad Iāve watched less, and have stuck with things that compelled me in some way. Hilariously, I think itās actually lowered my overall average, but my general mood is up because Iām not forcing myself to slog through shows.Ā
You can go here to find your top 10 posts of each month.

I love musical theater. I may not be a theater kid stereotype, but I always found it as an interesting way to tell a story. But despite the fact I personally donāt think itās that big of a deal, a lot of my relatives seem to take me as āthe musical girlā. My mother made my 17th birthday musical themed. A lot of my Christmas presents were musical related, Iām sure youād get it. A couple of weeks back though, my cousin in Michigan, who I donāt really know, suddenly sent me a DVD with blue sharpie on it, simply reading āThe Guy Who Didnāt Like Musicalsā in all capital letters due to how much of a mouthful that name is, Iām going to refer to it as TGWDLM for the rest of this. The DVD itself was rather normal looking. She didnāt send me the box it came in, which is probably the reason why it was labeled in sharpie, cause without it, god knows what it could be. It could be a musical or a gore video, so thanks to her for that.
As for the contents... Well, it was a Pro-shot of a musical! The story was about a man named Paul, a guy who... didnāt like musicals! The opening song seems to portray this as a huge deal but to be honest, it isnāt. One day, on the opening night of a Mamma Mia! production in the real-life ghost town of Hatchetfield, Michigan (but populated, obivously), a meteor hits, carrying alien spores of a musical hivemind. One interesting fact is that the zombies are the only ones who sing, and dear god, some of their songs are so camp, but I guess thatās the joke. Also, I can definitely see an influence from Invasion of The Body Snatchers, hell, they even reference it. The musical itself had more laughs than scares for me, but the curtain call gave me fucking chills. The unusual parts though, come from not the musical itself, but what comes after it. Thereās a behind-the-scenes, with a lot of content. There were audition tapes, director's commentary, easter eggs... I personally found it as fascinating as the musical itself! There was some mentions of a earlier version of the script, with some interesting parts that werenāt in the original, for example; Paul, Ted, Bill, and Charlotte all worked at a review site similar to IGN or Buzzfeed, or that Alice, in a strange trance, spouts out a bible quote. I began to feel like these random people, from an obscure theater company, were people I knew. But as fun as the behind the scenes are, that is not why Iām here. After the behind-the-scenes, there was just... A black screen. For like, 4 or 3 minutesā¦ Then a blue screen with white text, with a font that looks like those fonts in analog horror, with one word. āAPOTHEOSISā.
Thereās more after this too. The following is a very different feeling compared to the behind-the-scenes. It appears to be the night the pro-shot was recorded. It shows footage of the curtain call, when Emma was dragged backstage. Then, it cuts to security footage backstage. Immediately Emmaās actress, who I think Iāll just call Lauren, since thatās her real name, goes out of character. The others donāt let go of her, instead ejecting her out of the crowd. She lands on her ass and says āOw.ā in a tone that says āWhat the fuck dude? Whyād you throw me?ā. The others are silent. Lauren gets up and after a moment looking at the others, decides to take off her bandage, revealing a real scar underneath. Lauren seems unsettled by this, but itās made worse when everyone else approaches her, talking to her as if she IS Emma Perkins, despite her insistence. They then got closer, and closer. Lauren tried to back away, but they got closer. Eventually, Lauren was completely surrounded, and they... I... I canāt say it. I just canāt. All Iāll say is that audience members found the room covered in blood and mysterious blue goo. The blue screen appears again, the text now saying āTHEIR RETELLING SUCKED ANYWAYS.ā
After whatever the fuck that was, I kinda had to dig deeper? I had this mix of morbid fascination, horror, and an urge to somehow bring all this to light. Well... That and how at first I assumed it was a performance act, only to find out via a google search that it was all real, Lauren Lopez was presumed dead, and the rest of the cast are missing to this day.
So I talked to people who were at the closing night show. When it was recorded. They reported being genuinely convinced in some segments, like when Emma quote unquote āLooked at Tedās eyes in horror, like she saw nothing thereā and praised the āpractical effectsā. They also said that the few who lingered after the curtain call heard screaming. Those who checked backstage saw... Well, you know.
I didnāt find much about it though. Only this weird cult website when searching for random tag words related to the musical. It was talking about āHis singular voiceā or whatever and was saying that, like, all voices needed to be eradicated, for His is the only one that should exist, or whatever. Weirdly enough, there was musical theming in there. And... A page about the musical. I can vaguely recall the contents but itās really hard to. It had a synopsis of the musical kinda biased in the favor of the zombies, with the implications that He caused the musical apocalypse over there. Me and my friends looked at the site once in a discord call and laughed at it. But then I found the actors' faces and how they all were brought to an āapotheosisā. Like... Like in the fucking musical.
It was just a rabbit hole I found myself in at the end of the day though. I easily tucked it into the back of my brain and went on with my life. But then stuff started getting weird. With me, I think. Iāve been more scatterbrained than usual, prone to zoning out for long stretches of time, wandering off conversations to talk about something else entirely, and Iām beginning to hate the sound of other peopleās voices and I donāt know why, I was never a social butterfly but I didnāt hate other people talking... Everyday when I brush my teeth I notice my eyes getting... Bluer? I donāt know how, but my eyes have gone to a dark brown, to a light brown, to a hazel, to green, and now itās getting closer and closer to blue. My friends online have been safe at the time from my sudden hatred of other voices but I canāt really go on voice chats anymore. And my fixation on musicals has only grown as of late. I canāt help but fight the urge to spontaneously sing a show-tune. I hate it.
Iād try to see a psychiatrist or something but I canāt bear to hear another voice, itās so grating. And I know I should just grin and bear it but the last time I tried that I yelled at them. Not many people like me much anymore. I see why, I mustāve become an asshole to them, but they donāt get it. My eyes have become blue by now, and I think itās glowing too.
I canāt help but play the songs over and over. I called it camp but I think itās growing on me. I like Let It Out the most. I relate to Paul a lot right now. And then I noticed a split second shot of... His actor... Being... I canāt say it. I had to vomit. Why wouldnāt I? That was so fucking disgusting. And when I puked, I froze pale at what I just pushed out of my body.
It was blue, viscous sludge. It felt disgusting looking at it, even worse when you hold it. It smelled like ammonia. I ran out of the bathroom. I couldnāt stand to look at it any longer. And thatās when I decided to write this. Iām scared, to be honest, who wouldnāt be? Iāll most likely either be dead and have my corpse puppeteered, or go missing, for another poor soul to inevitably find the DVD and end up like me. I can hear the chimes and hymns of The Singular Voice. I know He wants me to become one with Him. He says itās inevitable for me. And what choice do I have in the matter anymore?
Iām sorry, I lost.

WICKED PT. 1 REVIEW
(spoiler free*)
*spoiler free is used generously, there are no major or intentional spoilers but i make no promises for smaller things.
casting:
going into it thought the casting would be the weakest point, but i was pleasantly surprised. that said, i think jon chuās reasoning for not casting unknowns was total bs and he just wanted a star-studded cast. i also wish they were younger. it was kind of giving movie ben platt terrorizing the teenagers of dear evan hansen. it works for the stage, but my belief was not suspended on the big screen. so while i donāt necessarily agree with how we got here, objectively they were great.
production:
honestly it looked amazing, i wish some parts were graded with a little more contrast, but the colors werenāt muted at all and i thought the cinematography was the perfect level of dramatic and interesting. the highlight was the emerald city. nothing else really stuck out to me in particular but the first 30 seconds or so of one short day looked AMAZING.
the singing:
sounded phenomenal, and this is coming from someone who heard the trailers and panicked. i donāt know what they did in post to make them sound so awful and processed in the trailers, but the movie itself sounded great.
the acting:
i wantedā¦ more. jonathan has such an overly expressive face that worked so well, but cynthia was just the smirk emoji for 2.5 hours and ariana looked like this š the entire time. they had their moments, of course, but with all the added dialogue (and no song to carry the emotion) i wanted more of a performance.
why the fuck was it 2.5 hours?
i donāt know man. i understood (and enjoyed) some of the additions, but there were an equal number that didnāt add anything, and there were so many scenes where i was like whyyyy is this taking so long. it felt like they were trying to (unsuccessfully) justify the runtime instead of it being a natural result.
2-part split:
this is by far my biggest criticism of the movie. the ending was done BEAUTIFULLY, but the year gap will kill the momentum. i 100% believe that splitting it into two parts will take away from the viewing experience. i actually didnāt have a problem with the splitting when it was first announced, but now that iāve seen part 1 it feels like a forced cash grab.
rewatchability:
even though i actually really liked it, i donāt think iād ever electively put it on instead of a stage recording.
SONG BREAKDOWNS:
no one mourns the wicked
a fantastic opening. i went into the movie very skeptical, but it managed to win me over on all accounts. it had the richness and fullness youād expect + beautiful visuals and ariana proves her doubters (me) wrong immediately.
dear old shiz
the song is nearly identical to the musical, but the changed staging was odd (but also insignificant in a way that made it even more odd).
the wizard and i
i blame the directing for why this song fell flat for me. they toned down the physical animation of elphaba but didnāt add anything else so it was sort of just her walking around and singing at us. also didnāt super love cynthiaās take on it until the last verse, which was phenomenal, probably because the directing didnāt let her do anything with it.
what is this feeling?
SOOOO GOOD!! it sounded amazing, looked amazing, the ensemble was amazing. THIS is what a movie musical is supposed to do: take what was great on stage and expand in a way that is only possible on film. it was fun and inviting and probably one of the strongest numbers in the entire movie.
something bad
i liked what they did with this in terms of the pacing, and i also like that it helped bolster the animal side plot instead of it getting swept into the songs on either side. the singing was unmemorable but the scene was very effective.
dancing through life
i have SUCH mixed feelings on this. i absolutely loved it up until the break when glinda gives elphaba the hat. jonathan sounded amazing, the dancing and cinematography was perfect, but the pacing and flow was totally ruined after what shouldāve been a brief interlude for plot. the moment between elphaba and glinda is very strong and still made me cry, but the middle section was just so off-putting.
popular
sooooo good. ariana sounded amazing, and the directing was perfectly energetic. it felt like a music video in the best way. the colors, cinematography, and storytelling was great. they did manage to strip all of the homoeroticism out of it, and arianaās yuh made a few valiant attempts to escape, but neither detracted from the final product.
iām not that girl
same issue as wizard and i, i didnāt want just another three minutes of elphaba standing around singing to the camera. the last verse was the best because there was actually something happening visually, which i think also made cynthia sound better. the monologue style number works on stage for a variety of reasons, but felt like a waste of screen time in the movie.
one short day
first 30-60 seconds are AMAZING. took the energy of the stage and shot it to the moon. it actually made me tear up and i have no complaints. the added interlude was a little long, but iām a sucker for nostalgia bait so iāll allow it.
a sentimental man
ummm i hated it lol. it felt SO out of place due to some poor (in my opinion) script additions, and the singing wasnāt anything special. the jeff goldblum cameo made them give the wizard way too much emphasis at that point and it completely disrupted the flow of the movie
defying gravity
except for (another) unnecessarily long interlude, this was everything i was waiting for and more. ariana and cynthia sounded amazing together and cynthia sounded PHENOMENAL. ariana delivered the āwell, where are your wings?ā line perfectly, which is usually for me a weak point with a lot of glindas; and the āi hope youāre happy now that youāre choosing thisā verse was perfection both visually and vocally. overall, it did what it was supposed to do: it wrapped up the first act beautifully and showcased cynthiaās voice.

My Thoughts Prior to Sonic x Shadow Generations (mostly Dark Beginnings)
This wonāt have much rhyme of reason to it, but I want to go over my thoughts of the episodes and some related information released prior to the gameās release. So this is sort of a mix of a review for Dark Beginnings and predictions based on that and the promotional information for the game? I may reblog this after playing the game to expand my thoughts, or I may just make a new post and reference this one if itās relevant. Well, assuming I make a post about my thoughts on the game, anyways.
Since this will likely be rambly, I will put my thoughts under a cut so as not to clog your feed. Iāll try to organise my thoughts as cohesively as possible. Iāll start with the Dark Beginning episodes as they give the most story information, then Iāll go over a few thoughts from the promotional material.
Warning - Spoilers! (But alsoā¦this is a really long post lol)
Episode 1: Shadow and Maria
The first thing that stands out is, of course, Shadow and Mariaās relationship. Shadow is certainly more the anxious type, perhaps in part to Gerald informing him on Mariaās condition. But they have such a cute sibling relationship! It was also nice getting a glimpse into Mariaās sickness and how Shadow handles it, and how Maria shows concern for his insecurities and such. They look out for each other. And you can see just how deeply he cares about Maria. The fact he went out of his way to view the aurora borealis in the present day shows just how deeply he cared about her love of nature and how he carries that with him.
We learn a little bit more about Mariaās backstory. Not only is it confirmed that she has in fact been earth prior to living on the ARK (some people thought maybe she was born on the ARK or smth?), but we also learn that the reason being in space helps is because the gravity keeps her condition in remission. As a side note, I love seeing characters with invisible disabilities in media. Maria has the capacity to run if she wants, but it comes with consequences. As someone with an invisible chronic illness, I appreciate the representation! And itās nice to see Shadow being gentle yet firm with her when he reminds her not to exert herself. And when he holds her hand before running off, you can see him gently squeezing her hand. He is so careful and caring with her.
I havenāt played Battle, but it was also nice to see them referencing older games by including Emerl. I get that Generations is all about revising the past, but itās nice to see them bringing stuff all together.
After the glass shatters (which I interpret as time/space shattering?), we see Shadow fall into the cell Gerald is in. I can only imagine how Shadow felt being there with him in this vision, especially because he saw the firing squad shoot him. He almost seems pained by it with how he grabs his head. And then he of course falls into some void space after reaching out for Gerald. Again, I see this as the timeline breaking, especially because we see Mariaās death portrayed in the cloud/mist. Then we get that brief glimpse of Black Doom reaching out and grabbing Shadow, which leads him to believe Black Doom is back.
Itās also clear just how often Shadow thinks about and has nightmares about what happens, to the point he more or less knows the timelines of events. We really get to see how much his trauma affects him. Iāll touch on this a bit more later, but this feels like a really good depiction of PTSD and trauma. In the past few games, he hasnāt really seemed as affected by the events on the ARK, as if he has moved on. But thatās just it - he canāt completely move on from his trauma. Sure, he appears to have a better understanding and is better at coping with it (again, Iāll expand more on this as I go), but him relapsing feels like an accurate depiction of how someone with PTSD, CPTSD, or really any mental illness will go through ups and downs with their disorder.
You could argue that this wasnāt a nightmare and was a vision of sorts because of the timeline distorting, but he speaks as though he does get frequent nightmares. He is able to differentiate this situation from a nightmare presumably because he gets nightmares so frequently. He also mentions it happening in view of the ARK. I interpret this to mean he didn't fall asleep (especially given he is standing when he snaps out of it), but more like a trance-like state. Maybe he looked at the ARK while admiring the aurora and it started the vision?
Itās also pretty interesting that he seemed scared at the idea of Black Doom being back. When he had amnesia in ShTH, I guess he didn't have much of a reason to be scared of Black Doom. But he knows how powerful he is, and with his memories back, he knows fully what Black Doomās influence is on his past - sharing his DNA and making an agreement with Gerald that Shadow would later collect the Chaos Emeralds for him. We know from the next episode that Shadow isnāt the most fond of his Black Arms DNA, so it makes sense that he is worried he will have to confront that part of himselfā¦Iāll come back to this thought later. Even without that, it would be pretty disconcerting to think about a foe you defeated coming back, especially after a vision like that.
Episode 2: Finding the Way
We get another wonderful glimpse into Shadowās past. Itās a bit more speculation, but itās somewhat reasonable to assume that Maria is the only one who has a friendly relationship with him. Abe calls him a freak, and though Gerald created him, Maria is the one who gave a deeper meaning to his name. Maria and Abe were also friends, so I imagine that she at least tried to get him to like Shadow, but it obviously didn't work. Maybe because Maria was the only one saying nice things about Shadow? Given what he went on to do with Shadowās memory following Mariaās death, I canāt imagine even Gerald had the closest relationship with Shadow. Correct me if Iām wrong, but we donāt really have anything canon to show that he cares much for Shadow as an individual versus as his science project. It makes sense that Shadow is so weary of others and why Mariaās death hurt him so much - she was the only one among many who cared about him personally.
We see more of Shadowās insecurity and his struggles with his identity. He seems genuinely afraid because of his alien DNA. This once again makes me think that Gerald was very clear to Shadow about what his origins were and his purpose, but perhaps not much more than that. After all, Shadow doesnāt believe he has a place on earth. If Gerald really cared, I figure he would have talked to Shadow about going home with himself and Maria about going home together, and he would have dispelled Shadowās fears about being a monster because of his DNA. Besides, Shadowās negative perception of the Black Arms had to come from somewhere, right? This is speculation, of course, but I canāt find much to suggest Gerald cared much for him. Itās heartbreaking to think that because Gerald messed with his memories, he could have used the ARK to destroy all life on earth - not too dissimilar to what Black Doom wanted. Can you imagine the guilt Shadow feels by almost becoming the thing he feared so much?
In the midst of Shadowās worry, we get to see Maria being a sisterly figure to him. I love this scene so much - I genuinely teared up when I first watched it. Anyways, we see that Shadow clearly struggles with his origins, but Maria doesnāt view him the way he does - heās not the heartless monster he thinks he is. She genuinely listens to his concerns, and when she sees him become depressed over his origins, she immediately comforts him She sees that he genuinely cares, even if he struggles to express it. Autistic Shadow, yay! To her, itās what Shadow does, not what he is, that makes him a good person. She was perhaps the only person to view him as more than just a science project. And despite him being viewed poorly by others, Maria sees that he cares for others. This is supported by a scene later as well as one in the third episode, but Iāll get to that.
Fast forward to modern day and yay, Team Dark! Itās interesting that their introduction comes after Maria says that Shadow will find more people he can trust, aka Rouge and Omega. (Iād also argue Sonic is someone Shadow trusts and maybe Amy too, but we aināt talking about them right now.) We get to see Shadow and Rougeās friendly relationship with one another. They may not be partners per se, but she greets him like a close friend that sheās comfortable with. He, in turn, shows curiosity about why sheās there without a hint of malice. They both openly share why theyāre there, which is a testament to their trust in one another. He was listening but also making sure to watch out for dangers and saves her, much like he does for Maria in the first episode when she collapses. Itās in his nature to look out for others.
We then get to see a glimpse of his leadership. Sure, I donāt know if you can really say theyāre strictly a team. As much as I love Team Dark, they seem to mostly team up due to convenience and circumstance, but he directly but respectfully gives them an order and they follow without hesitation because they trust and respect him. When theyāre together, they work as one unit. Itās also nice to see all three of them being more than competent fighters.
The way Rouge teases Shadow about him going to Sonicās birthday party in return for her help adds to the idea that theyāre familiar with one another. You wouldnāt really speak that way, nor call a platonic friend āhandsomeā, unless you had a degree of familiarity and closeness with one another. If they werenāt friends, Shadow would have gotten mad at her multiple times throughout this scene. Instead, he sighs in a way that is interpreted as a reluctant yes (again, he doesnāt deny this, so it is more or less confirmed that he was agreeing to go).
We also get more confirmation that Rouge is a free/double agent. She doesnāt work for GUN, but she still works with them occasionally. She will team up with whoever itās convenient to team up with. Of course, I like to think that her teaming up with Shadow in this instance is more her being a friend doing another friend a favour. She doesnāt really have a reason to help Shadow, and her request doesnāt personally benefit her. Sheās helping Shadow because she cares about him. You quite literally see her eyes light up when she notices Shadow is there. This went from a boring intel mission to something more interesting to her.
Episode 3: To the ARK
This episode hurt me so much and made me lowkey worried that Iām gonna cry when playing Sonic x Shadow Generations.
First thing I noticed - Shadow smiling? I love that for him. I do appreciate we are seeing more of that with Shadow. He isnāt constantly brooding and miserable - he has a more casual and fun-loving side too. We also see that he has a somewhat similar view of GUN as Rouge does. They have both worked on behalf of GUN in the past in varying capacities, but whether or not they are on GUNās side fluctuates depending on their goal. Itās what separates them from Team Sonic - they act according to their best interests and what their mission is.
I donāt have much to say about the fight. Itās epic of course, but Iāll talk about production and such later. I will say itās funny to see theyāre continuing to show how destruction-hungry Omega is. I also mentioned earlier that this episode has a scene where Shadow shows compassion for others - I was referring to him saving the GUN agent. Strictly speaking, this guy was in Shadowās way and was attacking him, so he couldāve left him. But he saved him, possibly because he recognised that he wasnāt attacking out of a vendetta, but that it was his job to protect GUNās machinery and assets. That and we get to see that Shadow can teleport small distances as a natural ability, not because of a Chaos Emerald.
When Shadow is under threat of the spacecraft heās in being shot down, you can see the panic in Rougeās face. Thankfully Abe comes in and tells the GUN forces to stand down, but itās nice seeing how much she cares about Shadow. We know she cares of course, but she definitely has a soft spot for Shadow. Thereās the scene in Heroes where she worries about Shadow not being the real one, which also showcases Omegaās wisdom and own compassion. Then in 06 we get to see her assuring Shadow that sheāll be on his side, even if the world turns against him. And now in this episode and the previous one, you see that she gently pushes him out of his comfort zone, has a genuine comradery with Shadow and Omega. Not just that though, she clearly understands Shadow very deeply as evidenced by her conversation with Abe.
From Abeās point of view, itās nice to see him genuinely wanting to connect with Shadow. He is remorseful for the way he treated Shadow in the past and wants to be trusted by him. And he clearly has implicit trust in him - he did let Shadow fly off in the spacecraft without even knowing what he was doing.
I will say one minor nitpick I have with this scene is what Rouge said. When Abe scolds Rouge for not talking Shadow down, she says that only one person who do that - Maria. You could argue that Sonic and Amy can both talk Shadow down, though. Amy was the one who convinced Shadow to help everyone steer the ARK away from earth. And in the IDW, Sonic talked Shadow out of hurting Mr Tinker (Eggman), even though his worries came true later on. I assume what Rouge meant though was the Maria is the only one he will trust wholeheartedly and follow unwaveringly. With Amy, he backed down because she reminded him of Mariaās true promise. With Sonic, his past was leveraged against him, and seeing how hard Shadow is on himself regarding his past mistakes, you could argue he backed off out of guilt rather than agreeing with Sonic.
And thenā¦that scene plays. Shadow daydreams about what could have been if Maria was alive, and the vocal track clearly highlights that he blames himself for her death. This causes him to get anxious until he snaps himself out of his daydream. The way he says āstop thatā so softly breaks my heart. This is one of the first times we have seen Shadow be so emotional, and it makes sense. He had a vision that made him relive his most traumatic memory, and he was going back to the very place it all happened. Not only that, but there was the possibility of Black Doom being back - what would he do if he was there? Of course he was thinking about Maria!
I know some people donāt like that Shadow is going back to his old memories because they think he should be over it, but as Iāve already said in another post, PTSD doesnāt work like that. Even ignoring the situation at hand - the vision he had and having to return to the ARK with the possibility of facing Black Doom again - recovery isnāt linear. Of course he is going to fluctuate in how affected he is by his past. What happened to him was incredibly traumatic. We have now seen how Maria was perhaps the only person who cared about him and the only friend she had. His job was to cure and protect her and, by his definition, he failed to do the one thing he was created for - saving her. Not only that, but his memories then got screwed with, and his relationship with Maria was manipulated by the very person he was created by, causing him to do the very thing Maria didn't want him to do. He then had to struggle with his amnesia, deal with identity issues surrounding potentially being an android, and facing against Black Doom, who like Gerald tried to use his past to manipulate him. Those things arenāt just something you āget overā. Sure, he seems to be better at managing his symptoms, but he canāt ever really forget or get over what happened.
The song lyrics also reveals a lot about Shadowās thought process in this scene. Him referring to his situation as a never-ending nightmare once again highlights his PTSD. Itās a memory that will likely haunt him for a long time. I would say for the rest of his life, but heās immortal - I believe eventually he will come to focus more on the positive parts of his memories with Maria, but that will take time. Or maybe just Sonic x Shadow Generations? Who knows. He also talks about pretending to see Maria again and imagining a world where he saved Maria, which we see him doing in the episode. But we clearly see he blamed himself - he says he āfailedā to save Maria and how he ācanāt forgive the wrongsā heās done to Maria. And the final line about him remaining alone? Obviously he has people he trusts and cares about now, but being lonely and feeling alone are two different things. He has people like Rouge, Omega, Sonic - but ultimately he feels alone because he struggles to get close to them emotionally. Think about it - this is perhaps the only time we have seen Shadow so emotional, but he does this when heās alone. He struggles to be vulnerable with others, I assume in large part because those close to him have used and manipulated him in the past. Plus he holds on dearly to the title of Ultimate Lifeform - perhaps he views that itās a weakness to be vulnerable. Or given how much self-blame he has, maybe he feels he isnāt allowed to receive help. Either way, itās really sad that he feels so alone. I hope someday he opens up to someone.
Okay, so before I move on to my general thoughts and predictions for the new game, I just want to quickly talk aboutā¦
āØ The Production āØ
ā¦because man, these episodes slap!! The animation is absolutely gorgeous. Itās 3D but it almost looks 2D? The lighting is amazing, especially when showing energy sources like Shadowās chaos energy or the glowing tubes in the first episode. Itās so incredibly striking. And the choreography? Amazing!! The music is also so incredibly emotional. The ones that stand out is the one that plays when Maria grabs Shadowās hand in the first episode, and of course the vocal track Without You in the third episode. I honestly donāt have the words to properly describe everything, itās just so incredible.
SxS Gens ā Promotional Material (Trailers/Interviews)
I wonāt go super in depth, but Iāll briefly mention some of my thoughts about what we have seen so far. Iāll probably miss stuff out, but the game is two weeks away, so all will be revealed properly soon enough.
A lot of Shadowās character so far has been him moving on from his past, but this game seems to be him confronting it. The two biggest hints for this is the Doom Powers and the return of Maria and Gerald. With the Doom Powers, Shadow is having to fully embrace his Black Arms DNA. We see how insecure he is about his origins in Dark Beginnings, but now he is going to have to confront that part of himself, face it head on and make it his own. With regards to Maria and Gerald, perhaps he will talk to Gerald and ask more questions? Not sure exactly what theyād talk about, but I hope they talk in some capacity.
I assume the biggest thing will be Shadow deciding between keeping Maria around or restoring the timeline. Iāve seen some people want a Life is Strange type decision where you get to choose which you want, but I highly doubt it. I would also argue thatās a regression in Shadowās character. Not only would he be disregarding Mariaās wishes, but it would also be him backtracking on his growth in finding himself outside of his history with Maria. Also, I know he cares about Maria, but to think heād sacrifice everything just to stay with her? It goes against his resolve to sacrifice himself for humanity and his desire to fulfil Mariaās wish to protect humanity. And it would also mean he screws over all his new friends. Sure, I reckon heāll struggle with the choice, but ultimately it makes more sense for him to sacrifice her again, both in terms of honouring Mariaās wishes and to develop him as a character to show he is genuinely moving on. Thereās also the chance they bring Maria back somehow while restoring the timeline, but I personally donāt think itāll happen and donāt want it to happen. I love Maria, but itāll be more impactful to have Shadow decide to restore the timeline instead of sacrificing it to save Maria.
A few points from the Developer Interview Iād like to talk about quickly. Itās mentioned that Shadowās story will be ādramaticā and that we will be āemotionally moved by it.ā Given the response from the just 10-15 minutes of animation in the Dark Beginnings, I can definitely see this game being emotional, and it seems thatās what they're trying to accomplish. They mention portraying him being in pain, which we have definitely seen the physical sides of in the trailers. But I assume heās also going to suffer emotionally, both because of Black Doom and seeing Maria again.
They bring up Sonicās birthday party and that Shadow isnāt there. Obviously we know that he was invited by Rouge, but my assumption is that he doesnāt show because he is already wrapped up with the Time Eater and/or Black Doom and so canāt make the party. Perhaps he is even taken to White Space before the Time Eater crashes Sonicās birthday party?
From a gameplay perspective, it seems the Doom Powers are intended to let you traverse the levels in different ways. To quote the video: āWe needed to make sure when weāre designing the levels that the player could find a different path if you use Chaos Control, or if youāre using the Doom Powers in a certain way or in certain locations and that those powers could create new ways of getting through the game.ā This links up with the Famitsu interview where they state that āyou can complete the game without using Doom Power.ā It seems these powers are there to make revisiting the levels more viable by creating shortcuts and helping you reach different locations. Itāll be interesting to see just how much exploration the levels have!
Itās clear as well that they want this game to be a love letter to old fans and an introduction to new ones. That makes sense - being a new fan is likely intimidating given all the spinoff games and such. I havenāt played all of them and Iāve been a fan of Sonic since I was a kid! And bear in mind, as much as it feels aging to hear, Shadow was introduced in 2001 - over 20 years ago. Although my friends arenāt as intensely interested in Sonic as I perhaps am, they are aware of Shadowās existence. But they definitely donāt know his backstory. Itās completely valid to not know the full extent of Shadowās backstory - whether or not youāre a new - especially given itās scattered across 20+ years worth of spinoff games spanning a variety of consoles. If youāre one of those people, youāre completely valid. It doesnāt make you more or less of a fan because you donāt know every little detail of the Sonic lore.
Final Thoughts
Iāll be honest, when I initially saw the game advertised, I wasnāt really hyped for it. I think I was nervous because if you ignore The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Prime, Shadowās writing has been a bit mixed. (My thoughts on Shadowās writing in TMOSTH can be found here if youāre curious!) Thereās the infamous Boom characterisation, which I think is universally disliked. And even in the IDW, Shadowās writing can be a bit iffy. I had lost faith in Shadowās modern characterisation until TMOSTH and Prime came out, so I was desperately hoping they took the positive feedback from that and continued it. I was worried though, given that one was a short April Foolās game and the other was a TV series.
Thankfully, it seems they are continuing to do Shadow justice!
Dark Beginnings has done most of the heavy lifting when it comes to my excitement for the game. Not only is it beautifully animated with gorgeous music, but the writing is incredibly emotional. It really feels like the writers poured a lot of love into it, and Iām so incredibly happy to see Shadow being more than just āSonicās edgy antagonistic rivalā
Sonic x Shadow Generations seems like a good format to introduce new fans to Shadowās lore. Theyāre clearly taking it all into account given how much they referenced in Dark Beginnings. Generations is about celebrating and exploring the past again, which feels like a brilliant opportunity to explain Shadowās lore and how it affects to his future.
Iām sure Iām missing some thoughts and maybe Iāll sneakily edit this post as new thoughts and revisions come to me, but I feel like Iāve already said a lot. To anyone who read this far, thank you! I hope my thoughts wereā¦interesting to read? Who knows! This was mostly just my way of infodumping in the absence of friends to talk to.
I canāt wait for October 25th!

Carry-On (2024) review
I absolutely adore usersā reactions on Letterboxd. Hereās one for this movie by user āmatthacundaā - āTS-motherfuckin'-A. They handle shit. That's what they do. Consider this situation fuckinā handled.ā Love that.
Plot: A mysterious traveler blackmails a young TSA agent into letting a dangerous package slip through security and onto a Christmas Day flight. Some directors should be left to doing what they do best. Jaume Collet-Serra has made a living off establishing himself as a bonafide auteur of better than they have any right to be suspense thrillers about decent people (majority of the times played by Liam Neeson with a particular set of skills) trapped in compromising positions. Yet in recent years he has been offered the big pay-checks from major studios to direct big Hollywood blockbusters the likes of Jungle Cruise and Black Adam, and they ended up not that good. Look, those movies are the kind of forgettable Hollywood content that could be made by literally anyone, and as such leave directors to await their chance for a streamer to then give them another chance, and then they can go back to basics and make a name for themselves again. In cometh Netflix, a pioneer of endless algorithmic content, who have allowed Serra to make another silly action thriller, now involving airports and planes again, which is great, as his best in my eyes is still Non-Stop - that movie was a whopper! But how does Carry-On hold up against it?
Thereās something really fun about setting a dumb action flick during the holiday season. Die Hard is prime example of this, using the holidays as a backdrop for pointless violence and action. Carry-On plays up to this genre, even if it is a tad predictable. I do wish it leaned more into the Christmas vibe, as aside from a couple of festive song cues (the film opens with Springsteenās āSanta Claus is Coming to Townā as we pan down the winter sky, and a notable car crash/fight sequence is accompanied by āLast Christmasā) there wasnāt actually that much Christmas fluff to this, unlike the trailers promised. Furthermore, there was a lack of action for an action film. Donāt get me wrong, when the action happens Serra brings his signature style, with the aforementioned car fight in particular being a visually popping and exciting piece, evoking the opening of the first Deadpool movie. But otherwise this is mostly Batemanās terrorist monologuing in Evertonās early for most of the runtime, which did become a tad repetitive and made the pacing a bit slow.
That being said, Jason Bateman as the baddie really is the best part of this film. For those surprised that Bateman can play a genuinely intimidating and unnerving villain instead of his regular awkward mess characters, you evidently havenāt seen his work in the Ozark series, and more notably the thriller The Gift, that really makes you re-assess Jason Bateman as am actor. The guy plays evil well. His calculated menace provides the perfect foil to Egertonās everyman hero, creating a dynamic that keeps viewers guessing about his true motives. Bateman is both relatable and terrifying, with his banter throughout much of the film adding a mix of unease and levity. Taron Egerton is fine, however aside from those two the other cast performances leave much to be desired. Sofia Carson especially provides a bland performance as Egertonās pregnant wife (which by the way her pregnancy being her only character trait), as she delivers all her dialogue in such monotone and lifeless fashion that one wonders if sheās talking to a tree. She lacks any kind of chemistry with Egerton, and in fact I was shipping Egerton more with Bateman.
Carry-On is enjoyable and fits right at home in Netflix infinite library of content. Youāll get a kick out of Batemanās evil doings, as well as the unrealistic silly happenstances that occur within the narrative, but aside from that this is the type of movie that will be long forgotten after the holiday season is over. That being said, for Christmas 2024 this is a perfectly fine and entertaining enough palette cleanser for a year that has overall being a misfire for cinema.
Overall score: 5/10

John Dies At The End book review and ranting
Personal Rating: 8/10
Ranking in the book series: Top 1
I like horror. I like comedy. I like weirdness and batshit insanity. And I like some seriousness in small bites between. If there is a book that perfectly captures those things in one, it's gotta be this one.
The tone:
The horror is graphic and tense, comedy can go from cheap frat boy humor to punchlines you wouldn't expect if you had billions of years to think about them. I wanna know what the author was on when he wrote the book and I want some of it. Meanwhile the horror is genuinely scary and doesn't really get soothed by the comedic bits. If anything, the horror gets more interesting and unique with the comedy.
Still, there are moments where the serious gets pushed to 100% and it truly leaves the room 5Ā°C colder. (The time Dave gets possessed by a shadow person and the time Dave loses 30 Minutes and wakes up with a gun in his hand and a missing person case. Those are the ones that stood out to me)
Pacing:
Out of all of the books, this one might genuinely be the most badly written. It is very episodic in the beginning (due to the fact that it started out as a web series) and it doesn't have that strong of a red string throughout it all. And it really bullshits its way through the acts with explanations that had no rules, no setup, and no logic behind it. Normally, I would roll my eyes, but with this story, it doesn't turn into a negative aspect but a positive one. The universe in this franchise is weird and has no rules and no logic. It's a mind fuck of a time line and the mix of the *very* unreliable narrator doesn't make it any less illogical. So yeah, this book gets away with a lot of bullshit simply because its funny.
Monsters:
The monsters in all of the series are weird and strange, but I really like the ones in this book. Korrok is an interesting entity that I would love to see more of. Still not sure if Korrok is connected to everything happening in the later books or if the rest of them, the spiders, the millibutt, Xarcrax, if they are their own thing. The shadow people are genuinely terrifying, especially their ability to make you cease to exist in the present and the past.
The characters:
The characters are not qualified to save the world, but still happen to be the chosen ones to do so. You see it in many stories. This is a rare occasion where you, as a reader, truly agree that they aren't made for the job. They don't get magically better at everything within 2 weeks. They are idiots, they are assholes, they are out of shape, they are unserious and unprofessional. But all of that in a realistic, and not over the top way. You can always relate with at least one of the people, or know someone in your life who is just like them.
The plot twists: (spoilers, I guess)
-Todd. I would consider Todd to be a plot twist. It's quite sick to find out halfway through the book that there was one more member of the monster hunter group, and we never got to know them. If the powers of the shadow people were confusing until then, Todd's existence (or rather, non-existence) explains it and shows how terrifying that concept is. And it is teased slightly in ways that you don't recognize unless you read it again. And even then, you miss some of it. (For example: In the interrogation, the officer says that 4 kids are missing, but only lists 3 names. In general, there is an inconsistency with how many people are listed and how many are alive at that point)
-The tool shed. 10/10 plot twist, in my opinion. It's spine chilling. It's brutal and a perfect lead up. I don't know about y'all, but to me, the tool shed reveal was a total surprise. Never ever EVER would I have expected that. It's perfect in a way that it keeps misleading you. At first, you are 100% convinced that the body in Dave's shed is Amy. You don't even question who it might be. You just know it's Amy. Well, fuck you, dumbass, Amy is alive and well. For the rest of the book, it keeps you guessing who it might be. It's gotta be Jennifer! Nope, Jennifer is revealed to be alive a chapter later. Marconi? Marconi is still alive, a few chapters later. You get different ideas and different wrong leads, and during the whole Shit Narnia bit you might even stop thinking about it at all because the guys have different problems now. Ending the book with the finale reveal of the body in the tool shed satisfying and comes full circle. The reveal that the corpse in Dave's toolshed is none other than Dave, himself, is nothing close to disappointing. Our protagonist and narrator has been a monster, himself, for the whole later half of the book, and it's brilliant!!! And once again, it's been teased at from the start.
Little aspects and bits I like:
- The book is called John Dies at the End. John dies in the beginning. His ghost transfers to Dave's phone, a hot dog, a dog, and back into his stolen corpse. He doesn't die at the actual end of the book. If you wanna convince someone to read the series, explain them that. (I know book 4 gives at explanation as to why the series is called that way but I still find it funny.)
- Your dead best friend calling you via a Motherfucking HOT DOG
-Amyyyyyy I love Amyyyyy
- The monsters from the underworld having the humor of a 14 year old fortnight gamer is peak horror
- Always love me some well written unreliable narrator
-"Would you like to donate some blood to CHAIRity?" *throws chair at monster*
-The city of [Undisclosed] is a unique kind of shithole to have a story take place in. It really gives the story a lot more vibes.
-The whole Las Vegas bit is just peak!

This Week in BL - Getting hot under the collar and in the kitchen and on the pool table and...
Organized, in each category, with ones I'm enjoying most at the top.
Aug 2024 Week 3
Ongoing Series - Thai
Monster Next Door (Thai Thurs Gaga ) eps 3-4 of 12 - one of the things I'm enjoying about this show is the fact that the introverted super shy uke is having hot fantasies, and the extroverted seme is having the sweet fantasies. It's another way this show is highlighting God being the world's greenest flagged seme BL has ever produced. (And he's being given stiff competition this year - trend alert.)
Anygay: God is so cute and so not cool and so in love and all the consent asking word salad coming out of this boy. I LOVE him.Ā
Diew: Itās ep 4 so Iāve decided we can talk face-to-face.Ā God: So how many children do you want?Ā
The teaching him to play basketball bit, where God politely asks to hold his hand, is so freaking adorable I canāt.
I'm thinking of calling this show the anti-Mame pill.
Blue pill? Red pill? GREEN pill!
My Love Mix-Up Th (Fri YT) ep 11 of 12 - We gotta talk. I do like this version, but itās starting to feel lackluster. Perhaps it always was by comparison to the bright sparkle uniqueness of the original. Perhaps I didn't notice because I was distracted by G4. But now I gotta say it's become a bit disappointing and even my love for G4 canāt seem to bind me to this. Frankly, this show is making me want to watch either the Japanese version, or My School President. Itās never a good sign when a currently airing BL makes me want to stop that and go rewatch an old one Iāve already seen.
NO SINGING.
Meanwhile, the "locked on the rooftop" trope! I havenāt seen that one in years. Cool. Also cute kisses. They learning.Ā
This Love Doesn't Have Long Beans (Fri iQIYI) ep 7 of 8 - I canāt believe this is ending next week. But also I can. And I have thoughts.
I really love SailubPon. They might be one of my favorite newer pairs on the scene right now. But I just donāt believe in these characters or this couple. I donāt feel like they are going to have a lasting relationship. It feels like theyāre just using each other for sex and distraction, and thatās how the script to set it up, and as a result theyāre never gonna make it as a couple. As soon as the sexual fire between them burns out, what do they have to build a relationship on? Frankly? That would be fine if this were a modern love drama, and not a BL. But this IS a BL.
Putting the health code violators aside, I really do believe in the secondary pair, but they havenāt been given enough bandwidth to develop as a couple. Thereās no way theyāre going to adequately resolve Methas and JJ in the final episode.
At this juncture, Iām mostly finding this show annoying. Which in itself is annoying, because I wanted to love it.
Why is it that Thailand, the land of the best food in the world, king of BLs, struggles so hard to produce the restaurant set BL of my dreams? Iām really pissed about this.
That said, the Methas & JJ stuff is killer. Loved JJ running away. So good. Plus the age old decision - love or money?Ā
Battle of the Writers (Sun YT) ep 2-3 of 12 - The issue was me and I've managed to get hold of this show again. The story within the story is so ridiculously badly written I'm going spare. Iām not sure if the outside show is not ALSO badly written. That said, I do love how the 3 writer friends are all shipping our leads. Itās VERY silly. Meanwhile, cohabitation trope is a go.Ā
I like the side couple too. Stern Daddy + lost puppy is a very cute dynamic, I hope we get more than just crumbs. I actually am enjoying this show now. Ep 3 kinda derailed into this weird chimera novel that theyāre all writing together and Iām finding that bit the least interesting, but I adore the domestic components which I think may turn out to be TutorYim's strength (if they're allowed to lean into it).Ā
Addicted Heroin (Thai Tues WeTV) ep 1 of 10 - Man I hope this gets some kind of distribution at some point. It was a pain to find and watch. But I enjoyed it. The focus is more on the seme in Thailandās version. Which I donāt mind since that's rare in BL, and itās more August on my screen. Itās all round softer than Chinaās version but still feels very familiar. I know some fans are struggling with it, but not me.
Sunset X Vibes (Sat iQIYI) ep 10 of 12 - I like that Samās crafty business espionage has paid off. Them teasing Sam & Yo really had me belly laughing. It was so funny.
Legitimate question. Would one put perfume on oneās cheeks in Thailand, as one does on wrist or sternum? Because of the sniff cheek thing? Scented face powders?
I do feel like with MosBank & SailubPon scorching up our screens, weāre being spoiled by some of Thailandās best high heat pairs at the moment.
I Saw You in My Dream (Weds Gaga) ep 5 of 12 - It remains kind of sweet and cute. It's also calm and slow moving. Oddly it reminds me of La Cuisine in its style and execution (if not content). Iām enjoying it more than I thought I would.
The Trainee (Sun YouTube) ep 7 of 12 - I donāt know. Iām getting bored.
Love Sea (Sun iQIYI) ep 10fin - Fortās acting during the break-up was truly great. But I feel for Rak. Itās rough to learn that someone else is playing a long game with feelings while you were playing a short game with d**k.
Ultimately this is probably a solid 8/10 show but Iām mad I wasnāt madder at it, and I'm mad I was so bored throughout. So it gets a 7/10 and let us not speak of this again. Iād like to simply forget about it.Ā Trash watch.
Ongoing Series - Not Thai
Sugar Dog Life (Japan Sun grey) ep 1-2 of 10 - OMG a uni student who looks young and a... COP! GAH. The subversion and kink of it all. I had to go grey to get it and I hate everything about what I had to do. But ya know what? Fucking worth every single repeated crash-causing advertisement.
I love it. The grumpy lonely little student cook and the cheerful mature police officer. What a fabulous dynamic. Is the cook looking for a boyfriend or a Daddy, and do we care if it has the same result? It is filmed VERY manga style camp. Iām a little nervous about that, but this means itās also very fluffy and so damn sweet. It made me squeak with the cute. Iām gutted this didnāt get distribution.
Ironic that Tawada Hideya is in a new BL while Sunspot is re-airing.
Cosmetic Playlover (Japan Tues Gaga) eps 3-4 of 8 - Ah, the gays are doubting the bisexual again. How familiar. I like how this one is paced and moving through time, even if the relationship seems to be going comparatively slowly by contrast. I love the way Sahashi is always looking at Natsume, even when theyāre in conversation with someone else. Ah yearning. I think the conflict was kind of inevitable, given the two personalities of the protagonists, and I like that. (No manufactured angst here.) But I still hope they can repair the breach and Iām still interested. Frankly this is so classically Japan - I donāt know what story beats itās following and Iām not entirely sure where itās going, but I kinda like that unpredictability. Makes me think it could go into "must you, Japan?" territory but fingers crossed.
I Hear the Sunspot AKA Hidamari ga Kikoeru (Japan Weds Gaga) ep 9 of 10 - I'm enjoying it very much. I could do without the girl character. I know sheās more interesting than most (this is Japan after all), but sheās not really for me. Itās the complexity of the connection between the leads (and why they like each other) thatās being executed so brilliantly in this show (and in the manga, FYI). Both actors are so on point with their roles and the nuanced emotions required of these characters that every time itās only them interacting I'm riveted. I could do without the rest of the cast tho.
Seoul Blues (Korea Fri? YouTube) ep 1 of 8 - I have a confession to make, Iāve been watching this whole series as it goes along. But this is the pair I absolutely like the most. Iām not sure I would necessarily recommend any of the installments, and Iām not sure how this one is going to go, but Iām VERY invested in this particular couple. They are so pretty!!!! This is a true friends-to-lovers struggle. I like that a lot. (Reminds me of I Cannot Reach You but a different dynamic.) Did I mention how pretty they are? And we already know they gonna kiss well. I bet the uncut version is stellar.
Meet You at the Blossom (China) - It's no one's funeral, turns out! Reports are in - not only are there kisses but it ends happily with wedding plans. So I'm eating crow, binging the fucker, and live blogging. I'm enjoying it. Ya'll know I adored Chinese BL before censorship. It has a certain unhinged quality I very much apreciate (and is the reason I'm so tolerant of the Thai pulps) that I think will marry well with Wuxia's effervescent and ever-present tropes. Watch me suffer here.
First Note Of Love (Taiwan Mon Gaga) eps 1-2 of 12 - About a singer with stage fright and his timid fan starring Charles (H4 the puppy one) and Michael Chang (the youngster in My Tooth Your Love), plus side couple featuring a Thai actor Jame (Koh in Gen Y) and Liu Min Ting (of Guardian fame). What a damn team. With their powers combined they are...
fine.
This is a fine BL. The fight scene was fun and I like the meet cute. Iām not sure about the chemistry of the leads, but I think theyāll probably do okay. I admit Iām struggling a bit with a singing and the music. Are you surprised? I think I like it enough, but Iām not wowed.
Takara's Treasure AKA Takara No Vidro (Japan Mon Gaga) ep 7 of 10 - Oh! Out of the blue attack kiss. What IS this show? I donāt get it at all. Bah. I guess theyāre dating now. Itāsā¦ so odd...
It's airing but...
4 Minutes (Thai Netflix/Grey) - A rich boy at uni suddenly gains the supernatural power to see four minutes into the future. I have a source, but I've decided to hold off and binge if it ends okay, since it's only 8 eps. I depend upon y'all to tell me if it's safe.
8/16 The Last Time (Thai Fri YT) ? eps - Convoluted story of loss and possible reincarnation or something. Again delayed? Not sure what's going on with this one but the continued push-backs do not bode well.
In case you missed it
The Time of Fever AKA Unintentional Love Story 2 (Korea movie) trailer IS COMING IN SEPTEMBER!!!! (Yeah this is gonna sit here until then).
Next Week Looks Like This:
Upcoming BLs for 2024 are listed here. This list is not kept updated, so please leave a comment if you know something new or RP with additions.
Still Coming This Month!
8/22 The On1y One (Taiwan Thurs Gaga) 12 eps - announced in 2023 this one has a high school set stepbrothers trope and is reputed to be high heat. From Taiwan! It's made for me. Based on a novel Mou Mou from the Your Name Engraved Herein folks, so it could go dark. Still, I'm very excited.
8/22 The Paradise of Thorns (Thai movie) theater release - Jeff Satur is back but this does not look like a BL (the gay lover's death is the inciting event). More in Goodbye Mother vein. Looks dark and dramatic. He opposite and extremely well known actor Toey Pongsakorn who has never done gay before.
THIS WEEKāS BEST MOMENTS
WHY IS HE SO FINE?
I truly belly laughed. Sam & Yo did not go in the direction I expected, but this scene alone made me not mind that they curtailed the suffering Sam was rightfully due. (SunsetXVibes)
Tall boyfriend armpit, anyone? (Monster Next Door)
The two extremes of BL in one show (Long Beans indeed).
(Last week)
Streaming services are listed by how I (usually) watch, which is with a USA based IP, and often offset by a day because time zones are a pain.

Alien: Romulus
spoilers!
let's chat. and also preface with the fact I've only seen alien and Aliens before, both of which I adore and rewatch endlessly.
I've seen some reviewers talk about this, but Andy carried that movie character wise. Everyone else was good - props to the weird cousin guy. He was a dick but he added some much needed internal group conflict.
Andy and Rain - she was weirdly cookie cutter in a very video game protagonist kinda way. She had a goal: get off planet. She had a brother who she viewed both as person and as pet. Something to be loved and coddled. At no point was she ready for him to have more agency. From the minute you knew she'd decided to leave him behind, you could plot the course of her entire arc. Andy was better. I was worried they were doing a weirdly placed take on adults with strong autism to start with, and was kinda relieved to find out he was artificial with a buggy system, and then realised that actually no the comparison still 100% works, but I like how they played it. He gets agency with intelligence, but it's at the cost of losing his human connections. His little sister, and the friends he's an outlier to. He never feels integrated into the group, always slightly on the outside. When he gets his new chip and directive, I read it as equal parts programming and rebellion. It took away some of his desire to do anything for Rain, and replaced it with pragmatism. But you can see its still him in there, and that he's mad about them leaving him behind. He keeps making decisions to keep Rain alive, but he focuses in on her life rather than her emotional needs, and lets other people die. It still reads as love, to me. But instead of her sacrificing him for her better life, he sacrificed her emotional wellbeing for both of them to live. Definitely the character with the most intricacy.
As said, everyone else and everything else felt kind of cookie cutter. The characters don't make interesting decisions. Its still well written and well done: you understand the how'd and whys of every decision they make. But none of them shine enough to keep up with Andy.
Okay, enough character stuff. Let's talk everything else.
The score and sound mixing: incredible. Loved that it started on that deep space silence. The music is good and more than functional, will probably listen to the soundtrack as a background for a while. The best choice sound wise in the whole movie is when she floats out the bottom of the cargo bay in the final act and the sound cuts almost completely. You could've heard a pin drop.
The look of the thing: impeccable. The minute they get onto those prowling H G Geiger ships I was sold on the whole thing. The wires and curves and me grin so hard. Less excellent alien hiding places than I would've liked, but they didn't use that trick too many times so it worked out. The red and orange lighting in the dark rooms gave the movie a very distinct aesthetic, separate from the other Alien movies that I've seen. And of course the shot composition was glorious. One of my favourite visuals was in the water filled cyro fuel room, when Andy freezes and reboots. Hi standing stock still as the camera pans up and we the audience understand: oh shit, that's a lot of facehuggers.
Things they set up and paid off: the pregnancy. Andy slipping a vial of the compound into his pocket. The X Ray scanner. The dropped key. The gravity timer. Just about the security cameras. Things they didn't quite pay off: the temperature sensing device. The facehuggers travelling through the vents. The sharp edges and quick mechanical closing of the vent covers they get into the ship through.
Shit that came out of nowhere: all the goddamn fully grown xenomorphs. That bit was pretty out of left field. I had anticipated there being more Aliens, but they fact they left it so late doesn't really make much internal sense. I guess because they were in the other half of the outpost?
Callbacks I loved: the Nostromo at the start and the vague references to Ripley. Rook being Ash. That was gooooood. Also shows that the companies whole thing in Aliens that synthetics aren't like that anymore is kind of bollocks.
That fucking thing: I'm calling it Romulus for obvious reasons. I thought the design was excellent. So fucking horrifying. I will be having nightmares. Its like they reached into my subconscious and designed it specifically to get to me. Incredible. Didn't like the fact it roared I think if it had made either an Alien hiss or a human noise it would've been way more compelling. Properly horrifying though. Really hit home that it's a horror movie more than anything else. Also. The death scenes in the movie? Incredible. It did those Well. My favourite was absolutely the acid blood literally burning a whole through that guys chest, because it was visceral and brutal and horrifying and so so hell done. You could really feel the panic and tension and still clock him scrabbling at his chest just to melt his fingers and feeling sick all over again. Just brilliant.
Overall: it was good! It sucks that I only really liked Andy, and he only really atarts coming into his own after Rain betrays him. Still fucked she took his autonomy away again at the end, even if their quipping was cute. Loved them raising the temperature of that room as a disguise that was inspired. Loved them turning off the Gravity to shoot the Aliens that also worked great. The elevator was also a good set piece. The biggest let down in this movie is the characters. Andy's great, Rain is alright, and sos the cousin who's only around for the firstish act. Bit the main side character guy, who's sisters pregnant? I don't even remember his name. They kept hinting at there being both backstories for him and for Rain that were more interesting than what he got. For him, some kind of genuine military past. For her: she'd been to Yvaga before. Maybe even grew up there as a little kid. It was an opportunity to add proper dimension to both characters that was squandered in favor of the crazier action scenes, which sucks. This movie was in dire need of clearer and deeper characters, particularly because in my eyes that'd what Alien does best, and Aliens takes a really good stab at considering the larger main cast.
Essentially. It's a good damn horror movie, but I'm not sure it's a great Alien movie, for all the incredible HR Giger and weird sexual violence undertones. I'm just not sure that plot wise it earned its Alien credentials. Like the last few lines. Rain leaves a log, as she's the last survivor of her ship. But there's no passenger log. It was never an authorised mission. Its a pointless message to leave. It gives the audience closure because it flashes us back to the end of Alien, but it makes no sense as closure for Rain. That's where I'm at.
#alien romulus#also i called Rain Ellie for at least 30 minutes bc of how much she looks like TLOU 2 Ellie. she was Ellie#Andy was brother#british friend was friend#Kay was sister#cousin of british friend was cousin#his gf was girlfriend#my naming techniques r nothijg fancy but its the onky way i can keep track of a group movie for more than 5 seconds#alien#romulus#alien: romulus#alien romulus spoilers#alien: romulus spoilers

Tell me your fave vaults
Okay, I somehow narrowed it down to a top five (honorable mentions are basically every single other vault) (except Vault 81) ( i wish the experiment actually happened and the overseer didnt shut it down i wanted the psychological horror :/ )
Vault 77- This is the crate of puppets vault, featuring the crate of puppets guy. This Vault wasn't a part of any game, rather it is from a comic that was promo material for fallout 3. and like, penny arcade understood the assignment on demonstrating how fucked up vault-tec is in thirty six panels. Like my one critique is that it's so short, but with the direction they went with the plot and the topics they tackled and it being 2008, it was probably for the best. Anyways the whole comic is free on the Internet Archive and its a nice snappy read (almost to its detriment like straight up plz someone get ari aster on the phone he'd make a fantastic adaptation of one man and a crate of puppets legit)
Vault 112- ooh hoo hoo unlike most vaults that I just remember from reading the wiki blurbs back in high school, this one was fully brought to my attention in a game of magic where i exiled a ridiculous amount of my library to get a winning card and also my missing dad (shout out to adventure costs!!!) and in that game i vowed to find it. I didnt know that it was a part of the main plot of fo3 yet but that didn't take long to find out. This is the creepy simulation one that i see as almost a proof of concept for the evil within vibes-wise (i fucking love the evil within series but thats besides the point). Legit terrified me in a way that should not have been possible (maybe im the one with unchecked issues that people being saccharinely nice to me sets off alarm bells in my head but it could also be that i had to get into a vr pod first) (who knows?) Anyways I proceeded to ignore like half of it and I'm looking forward to the next time i play and actually interacting with it a bit more (also one of my twelve fallout ocs is from this vault i made it work given this vault's canon ending)
Vault 11- Oughhhhhhh epistolary enviromental just altogether wonderful storytelling. the posters. The Posters! The ones that read "I Hate Nate" but the deeper down you go the more you find that have been graffitied to read "I Hate Kate" perfect wonderful amazing. Not to mention granting us with "Don't Vote Glover He Has A Family" which idk I love that out of context but I do. In context it's downright horrifying and the absurdity of it actually adds to the horror. Love love love Vault 11.
Vault 108- Gary. Gary Gary? Gary! Okay in all seriousness the story of this one is bonkers and also I'm a sucker for cloning (I had a cloning phase in third grade). Like, they found a guy that was going to die in a few months to be overseer so that there would be a power vacuum. Okay, normal social experiment for vault-tec. This eventually leads to them cloning a guy named Gary and then all the Gary clones killing the rest of the dwellers so now the only people in the vault are Gary clones. For the life of me I do not remember the chain of events that led to it and no i will not look it up it's funnier this way.
Vault 88- Look this one is boring to most people. Its a mix reviewed Fallout 4 DLC but dammit, I like getting to design my own Vault. As someone who got into Fallout because of the Vaults it was incredibly appealing to get to be the villain for once. And then I saw that my victim was this sweet guy named Clem (and also I was playing a goody two shoes but thats besides the point). Like I can tell they wanted to write Clem to be annoying so that you felt less bad basically torturing him but I found him so sweet and earnest I just couldnt. I fucking love Clem I would die for Clem hes like if a golden retriever was a person that I wanted to make sure kept his agency and autonomy. Plus it was really fun getting to piss the overseer off with some actually decent written dialogue. Like bonus points for that. And I still havent finished building the vault! amazing. absolutely wacky but also amazing.

Random reviews of recent comebacks (not very positive):
Imaginary Friend - I've already reviewed the song and MV, but the choreo is truly amazing and I loved the choreo MV - the dancers representing the imaginary friends and that move where they grab their knee and turn is awesome (though I don't understand all the hand gestures around the waist). The song is lowkey held back by Itzy's vocals - it needed softer, more angelic singing. I'm surprised by Chaeryeong because now I think her voice sounds the worst and she was so pitchy on a radio live. Also, for having such a cool choreo and song, their live performance is giving nothing.
GPT and Meant to Be - Most of Stayc's MVs are forgettable imo. They don't make sense, are generally too over the top, and scream low budget. I wasn't fond of GPT at first, because I think the lyrics are kind of cringe, but the song stuck with me. The beginning is nice and the chorus is catchy. I like Sieun's voice and the bridge. GPT would be a hit if other people sang it. A mix of soft/angelic and power Western vocals are the trend and groups who don't have these tend to sound outdated imo, like Itzy. GPT is a bop but everything about it screams mid-sized group in an industry dominated by flashy yet uniform visuals and smooth, easy listening production. Their voices are too loud and dissonant. It's hard to imagine them topping charts. Also, their performance still looks amateurish to me and the choreo isn't good (and follows the latest trend of excessive hand gestures). Meant to Be is a good ballad.
Drip and Click Clack - The lyrics are absurd given that BM are a bunch of teenagers who probably can't even afford a cheaper apartment in Seoul yet, but I love the songs. I think they're fun and the girls are really good. Their vocals, dance, and visuals are good. The Click Clack performance vid was awesome (but the lipsyncing was truly awful - do they even know the lyrics??). I loved the dance. It has impact.
Hit the Floor - The song is cool, but the live performance is very boring. Without the smooth studio production, the lipsincing and uninteresting dancing make the song unmemorable.
Cherish (My Love) and I'll Like You EP - I caved and listened to ILLIT. Their whole vibe is capitalizing off of innocence, which, given the alarming pedophilia and misogyny in Korea, makes warning bells go off for me. The first spoken line in the song is so cringe, and the fact that teenagers want to act like adults yet these girls are told to act like children is gross. The song is catchy though. I like the chorus. But I don't think the girls or choreo stand out in any way. Listening to the EP, it's pretty forgettable. I also listened to Super Real Me and Magnetic and... I thought Magnetic would be magnetic, pardon the pun, but it's really not. It sounds childish and empty. I had already listened to the chorus but the whole song is not great... The EP is so weak too. The girls really can't match up to other newly debuted groups tbh. And yet we have all of this drama right now for NWJS and ILLIT... Neither group's music or concepts are that good imo. I really don't get it. Why are people obsessed with NWJS? I only liked Ditto performed by Jungkook because his voice has personality. I think Hybe really lacks talent, particularly in their ggs. Their producing skills are also severely lacking.
Over the Moon - What in the fucking world is Hybe doing with TXT, can someone let me know? The fact that TXT said this was the first tt they liked since LOSER=LOVER (or was it 0x1=Love Song?) was shocking. To me, this is their worst tt. I've listened to it twice and can't remember what it sounds like - it's so short, lacks a bridge or climax, and the chorus is indistinct from the rest of the song. Their tts keep getting more forgettable. It doesn't help that I don't like Beomgyu, Soobin, or Kai's voices, and even Taehyun's is off-putting right now. Their performances are boring to me as well. The MV was also a lot of nothing and the choreo was boring as usual. I'm sorry for the excessive use of the word "boring" but it all blends in together.

10 horror or horror-adjacent movie recommendations from a certified horror fan :)
*rank is not to show best to worst. i just like numbering things.
1. WYRMWOOD
synopsis: a survivor of a zombie plague prepares to slash his way through a horde of sinister soldiers and ravenous monsters to rescue his kidnapped sister.
rating: not rated, but probably would be rated r
rotten tomatoes: 82% critics, 58% audience
review: if you like indie horror, this is for you. if you like more big-budget and clean films, then donāt even bother. despite being a little rough, this movie is a lot of fun and has one of the most memorable plot twists iāve ever seen. a very creative take on a zombies. thereās a sequel, but i havenāt seen it yet.
2. ESCAPE ROOM
synopsis: six strangers find themselves in a maze of deadly mystery rooms and must use their wits to survive
rating: pg-13
rotten tomatoes: 50% critics, 53% audience
synopsis: is this movie great? nope! is it a lot of fun? hell yeah it is! the set pieces are stunning, and even though it leans into some lazy horror cliches, i think thereās enough creativity to keep it interesting. good for a fun movie night where you donāt want anything too serious or too mind-consuming. thereās also a sequel for this too, but i donāt really recommend it lol.
3. 28 DAYS LATER
synopsis: a group of misguided animal rights activists free a caged chimp infected with the "rage" virus from a medical research lab. when london bike courier jim wakes up from a coma a month after, he finds his city all but deserted. on the run from the zombie-like victims of the rage, jim stumbles upon a group of survivors, including selena and cab driver frank, and joins them on a perilous journey to what he hopes will be safety.
rating: r
rotten tomatoes: 87% critics, 85% audience
review: one of my favorite movies of all time, so maybe iām biased. it is absolutely terrifying at times, but i feel itās a good mix of social commentary, drama, and gore. also, cillian murphy.
4. 28 WEEKS LATER
synopsis: six months after the original epidemic, the rage virus has all but annihilated the population of the british Isles. nevertheless, the u.s. army declares the danger past, and american soldiers arrive to restore order and begin reconstruction. refugees return to british soil, but one of them carries a deadly secret: the virus is not gone and is even more dangerous than before.
rating: r
rotten tomatoes: 72% critics, 66% audience
review: bloody. terrifying. shocking. while the characters are a bit harder to care about, this movie has an eerie and dreadful atmosphere that immerses you and scenes that will hit you like a truck. there is one scene in particular that has stuck with me my entire life because of how gory and unsettling it is. if you donāt like violence, skip this one.
5. UNDERWORLD
synopsis: under cover of night, vampires engage in an age-old battle with their sworn enemies, the lycans, a clan of violent werewolves. selene, a vampire orphaned in the wake of a bloody lycan attack, works for the vampire clan as a trained killer. when the lycans take a mysterious interest in michael corvin, an exceptional mortal doctor, selene struggles to save him from lucian, a ruthless lycan leader hellbent on ending the vampire bloodline.
rating: r
rotten tomatoes: 31% critics, 79% audience
review: more horror-adjacent and supernatural flick. i remember loving the entire series, but i can mostly only remember the first. itās been a hot minute since iāve watched it, but it has a stylish gothic atmosphere, a cool female lead, and is so early 2000s/late 90s in a great way (in my opinion, at least.) itās an under-appreciated, and divisive, action-horror classic.
6. BONES AND ALL
synopsis: love blossoms between a young woman on the margins of society and a disenfranchised drifter as they embark on a 3,000-mile odyssey through the backroads of america. however, despite their best efforts, all roads lead back to their terrifying pasts and a final stand that will determine whether their love can survive their differences.
rating: r
rotten tomatoes: 81% critics, 62% audience
review: you guys knew it would be here. another horror-adjacent recommendation in the form of horror-romance about cannibals. itās is deeply romantic in all its gore, and unsettles just as much as it comforts. beautiful atmosphere, beautiful scenery, beautiful acting, beautiful musicā everything about it is beautiful, but bloody enough to remind you why it got its r rating.
7. HELLBOY (2004)
synopsis: at the end of wwii, the nazis attempt to open a portal to a paranormal dimension in order to defeat the allies, but are only able to summon a baby demon who is rescued by allied forces and dubbed "hellboy.ā 60 years later, hellboy serves as an agent in the bureau of paranormal research and defense, where he, aided by abe sapien, a merman with psychic powers, and liz sherman, a woman with pyrokinesis, protects america against dark forces.
rating: pg-13
rotten tomatoes: 82% critics, 66% audience
review: itās a sci-fi/action/fantasy, but in my heart i know itās got some horror in it. hellboy has some stunning set designs and makeup/styling that make this movie stand out amongst other comic book adaptations. ron perlman is the definitive hellboy, and guillermo del toro gave this story a unique sense of style and wit. (also, abe sapien? one of my favorite character ever.)
8. READY OR NOT
synopsis: grace couldn't be happier after she marries the man of her dreams at his family's luxurious estate. thereās just one catchā she must now hide from midnight until dawn while her new in-laws hunt her down with guns, crossbows and other weapons. as grace desperately tries to survive the night, she soon finds a way to turn the tables on her not-so-lovable relatives.
rating: r
rotten tomatoes: 89% critics, 78% audience
review: a lot of recent horror movies have let me down, but ready or not is refreshing for the genre. it has a compelling dark humor, as well as clever writing that both makes you laugh and keeps you on the edge of your seat. i highly recommend to any and everyone. itās great! itās not a tough watch and easily makes you want to pay attention without it feeling like a chore.
9. X
synopsis: a group of actors sets out to make an adult film in rural texas under the noses of their reclusive hosts, but when the elderly couple catches their young guests in the act, the cast finds themselves in a desperate fight for their lives.
rating: r
rotten tomatoes: 94% critics, 75% audience
review: it may take on the classic slasher formula, but ti westās direction keeps it fresh. i will say it kind of meanders a little bit, but generally itās a good time with some good kills and a nice slowburn that doesnāt leave you unsatisfied once the credits roll.
10. NOPE
synopsis: a man and his sister discover something sinister in the skies above their california horse ranch, while the owner of a nearby theme park tries to profit from the mysterious, otherworldly phenomenon.
rating: r
rotten tomatoes: 83% critics, 69% audience
review: jordan peele is amazing. nope is an alien horror flick that expertly builds suspense and keeps you locked in, even when you donāt want to be. some scenes in this film have disturbed me more than anything else iāve ever seen. the alien itself is imposing and brings a sense of anxiety, and the characters are charming and witty. daniel kaluuya and keke palmer are fantastic leads. also, we love smart horror protagonists!
