pictures from the annual maintenance of the great mosque of djenné in djenné, mali. the mosque was first built in the 13th century but the current structure dates to 1907.
it (like much of the rest of djenné) is built with sun-baked earth bricks, and its smooth look comes from a coating of plaster applied over it. weather erodes the walls slowly over time, so a new coating of mud and plaster is required to be applied to it every year. the maintenance is also an annual festival which djennéans take part in.
#mali#architecture#worship#muslim#nmenam#my posts#didnt really know how to include the style the mosque is built in most likely being a result of french imperialism on#a post i wanted to make about the festival too eloquently#hopefully that link on ''1907'' is sufficient

The Festival of the Giants in Catanzaro, Calabria, Italy
A glimpse of i giganti at a Sicilian or Calabrian festival is a treat for all ages. But who are these folkloric giants – the golden-haired damsel and her dark-skinned suitor – and what are their origins? Just as the evocative figures float and whirl through the streets, their history entwines actual events and colorful myth to create the intriguing tradition.
The legend of the giganti is generally thought to originate in Messina, the northeastern Sicilian city that is separated from Calabria in the toe of the mainland by the aptly named Strait of Messina. Some accounts tell of a beautiful peasant girl, others of a local princess, but whatever her social position, the young maiden came from a virtuous, Christian family. Her name was Marta, or Mata in dialect. One day around 970 A.D. during the period of the Saracen invasions, a very tall Arab named Hassass Ibn-Hammar came ashore with his men to pillage the city. Upon seeing the lovely Mata, the prince asked for her hand in marriage. She refused, causing him to plunder all the more.
In the picture: THE IMPRESSIVELY GIANT GIGANTI IN MESSINA, SICILY
As a good Catholic, Mata resorted to prayer. Some stories tell of her kidnapping, but whether voluntarily or by force, she eventually capitulated and fell in love with the Muslim prince when he converted to Christianity and gave up his barbaric ways. He subsequently changed his name to Grifo and came to be known as Grifone due to his noteworthy physical stature. (The suffix -one denotes largeness in Italian.)
Across the Strait of Messina in Calabria, the giganti are constructed of papier-mâché and rest on the shoulders of their handlers.
Hidden under the giants’ skirts with a face hole to help guide their way, the puppeteers engage in a dance of courtship – the swarthy, mustached Saracen versus the fair, rosy-cheeked girl next door. Fast footwork to the step of the tarantella conducts the couple through turns, inclinations and other gestures that draw them ever nearer and lead to an embrace or kiss to the delight of the crowd.
The ballo is accompanied by the incessant beating of drums that not only requires great stamina from the puppeteers, but has even inspired legends.
Calabria and Sicily share the giganti as they share the Strait and histories plagued with foreign incursion and domination. The ballo of Mata and Grifone is commonly viewed as a representation of the struggle between Islam and Catholicism. In festive atmospheres throughout the regions, the conflict is peacefully resolved, the people emerge victoriously, liberty is preserved and everyone has a good time. Long histories and engaging folkloric traditions come together to form part of a rich cultural fabric in which i giganti play an important part, both enlightening and entertaining the generations of today and tomorrow.

by Khaled Abu Toameh
The first wave of Hamas's attack hit a music festival at Kibbutz Re'im which had an estimated 3,500 young people in attendance.
The magnitude of the onslaught became apparent as bloodied and panicked people staggered into the medical tent screaming for help.
Finally, the medical staff was ordered to flee along with everyone else.
Awad Darawshe, 23, an Arab-Israeli paramedic, remained behind, refusing to abandon the wounded. "I speak Arabic. I think I can manage," Darawshe said, supposing that he could reason with the terrorists. Perhaps he thought they would not harm a fellow Muslim Arab. He was wrong.
Hamas mercilessly beat, humiliated, abducted, and murdered their fellow Muslims, including Darawshe as he was bandaging the wounded. After Darwashe was murdered by the Hamas terrorists, his ambulance was stolen and driven into the Gaza Strip.
Abed al-Rahman Alnasasrah, 50, was murdered by Hamas terrorists when he attempted to rescue people from the music festival. He was married and a father of six children.
Fatima Altallaqat, 35, from the Bedouin village of Ar'ara, was also murdered while working with her husband near the city of Ofakim in southern Israel. She was a mother of nine children, the eldest nine years old and the youngest six months. Her brother said that Hamas terrorists shot 40 bullets into Altallaqat.
Her husband, Hamid, recounted:
"We're a religious Muslim family and she wore the traditional headdress of a devout woman. It is inconceivable they [Hamas terrorists] could not see who was inside [the car]. They were five meters away from her as they passed. She said she could not feel her legs. Her head was opened and I could see her brain. I knew she was close to death."

Israel had the Hamas attack plan for the music festival in 2022 and called it "Jericho Wall".
When Hamas attacked Israel October 7, 2023 I was suspicious that it really was a surprise to Israel.
I hope this war comes to an end soon.

Where were you for other suffering Muslims and Arabs around the world? Where was all the news and social media coverage and social justice warriors for the Chinese Uyghers? Where were you for the Syrians killed in civil war? Where were you when the US left Afghanis to fend off the Taliban by themselves? Where were you for the girls taken by Boko Haram? Where were you for the ethnic cleansings in Sudan? Do you even care that almost 400,000 people total in Yemen died?
Does no one question or find it weird why this ONE conflict is blown so huge on the news and social media compared to others?
Did you know that one million Iraqis (a staggering number) died after 9/11? And yet no one rallied for the death of all Americans?
If you are truly invested in the Israel-Palestine war, why didn’t you care about any of these other conflicts? Why weren’t you bombarded with information and posts about them? Why do you claim to care and yet refuse to understand Israel’s side or history?
Where were you for the Arab Bedouins obliterated by Hamas on 10/07 alongside their Israeli brothers and sisters?
Why didn’t you question any of it?
You don’t actually care. You just want to feel good about yourself.

Happy " Eid Al fitr" (Muslims celebrate breakfast after fasting the holy month of Ramadan) and "Sham al Naseem festival" ( an ancient Egyptian celebration of harvest ).
Kahk (coptic word) is round to represent the round desk of the sun ☀ the symbol of the ancient Egyptian god "Raa"
The eid cookies (kahk) is the oldest cookie in the world (British museum)
(we still make them today! The filled ones (kahk) in Eid. And the hollow ones (bracelet cookies) in funerals
Our ancestors bringing kahk as symbolic sacrifice to Raa
Speaking of Easter.. Did you know that Sham al Naseem is the og Easter?
But in Egypt we postpone it so that Christians can eat fish (after fasting themselves) 🥰
I can talk about our traditions and civilization all day long but nothing is compared to experiencing Egypt yourself. So don't be a stranger to the mother of the world 🥰❤️🇪🇬

*📮Diwali aur Hum Musalmaan*
Diwali ka Hindu tehwar Devi Durga ke zariye Mahisha ke khatme aur 14 saalah jila-watni ke baad Sita aur Ram ki Ayodhya (Bharat mein ek ahem ziarat gah) wapsi ki yadgar hai.
*Sawāl:* Lekin un Musalmanon ka kya jo Hindu dost rakhte hain? Kya woh unhein is tehwar par mubarakbad de sakte hain ya unke sath manana jaiz hai?
*Jawāb:* Nahi, bilkul bhi nahi. Islam mein Allah ka koi shareek nahi hai. Islam mein sab se bara gunah shirk hai aur Diwali shirk ka jashan manati hai.
The Hindu festival of Diwali marks the destruction of Mahisha by the goddess Durga, and the return of Sita and Rama after 14 years of exile to Ayodhya (an important pilgrimage site in India).
But what about Muslims who have Hindu friends? can they wish them or celebrate it with them?
No, it is most definitely not. Allah has no partners. In Islam, the biggest sin is SHIRK, and Diwali is a celebration of SHIRK.

Reminder that Palestine is still occupied by a brutal death cult that oppresses people from Abrahamic religions and also essentially anyone who criticises their colonialism. So plz stop associating Israel with God or holiness in any manner, they have just hijacked a prophet's name to steal land and murder people.
#free Palestine#israeli violence#barring people from their holy sites and bombing their houses during their festivals is the only culture israel knows#also it is racist to Arabs and black people#and it's hate isn't limited to Muslims#easter#Gaza#apartheid#end Gaza siege
