Personal Opinion
I literally gasped when I found this band. They’re a great punky band and I LOVE ITT. They also did a cover of MUDHONEY?? That’s how you know they’re badass. (Titled ‘Dicks Hate Police,’ original song is ‘Hate The Police’) overall, amazing punk band, and I’d definitely recommend them, especially if you like The Gits.

IN_A_MINUTE:
AN INDIE EXPRESS… // “DARE ME” is the second single from @beachfossilsnyc’s forthcoming LP titled ‘Bunny’ (6/2 @bayonetrecords) & it finds Dustin Payseur’s Brooklyn-based project waxing upon “conflict, friendship, & the intoxication of new love… willing to let yourself be stupid, vulnerable, pissed off & forgiving” over a tidy 2 ½ mins of guitar-driven DreamPop. @chainofflowersband are here w/ “THE WALL,” the second single from their forthcoming sophomore LP titled ‘Never Ending Space’ (5/26 @_a_l_t_e_r_) & it finds the London by way of Cardiff based outfit sounding wholly “reunited & rejuvenated” across 4+ mins of first_waving, sultrily shimmered & The Horrors-esque PostPunk… that sax tho!! “KEYS DOWN IF YOU STAY” (@firetalkrecs) is a new standalone single from @band_cola & it finds Montreal-based trio of former Ought members Tim Darcy (vocals/guitar) & Ben Stidworthy (bass) alongside US Girls drummer Evan Cartwright bringing their drowsily deadpanned & meticulously minimal brand of post_punking BummerPop. @wearefacs are here w/ “CONSTELLATION,” the final single in the run-up to their forthcoming EP titled ‘Still Life In Decay’ (4/7 @troubleinmindrecords) & it finds the Chicago-based trio of Alianna Kalaba (bass), Noah Leger (drums) & Brian Case (guitar/vocals) bringing a terse bout of rangy & nervously taut ArtRawk. “LITTLE DOGS” is the final single in the run-up to @mudhoney_’s forthcoming LP titled ‘Plastic Eternity’ (4/7 @subpop) & it finds the Seattle-based quartet of vocalist Mark Arm, guitarist Steve Turner, bassist Guy Maddison & drummer Dan Peter paying homage to undersized hounds (& maybe The Stooges) over 3 mins of playfully goofed AltRawk.

SHOWS BIKINI KILL PLAYED WITH NIRVANA
yeah we all know bikini kill played a crucial role in aspects of nirvana. despite the fact that they're often very simply watered down to Kurt Cobain having a crush on Tobi Vail and (good fucking lord) Kathleen naming Smells Like Teen Spirit, it's not often talked about how Kathleen, in her feminist art space Reko Muse, hosted some of earliest shows, and is even the venue featured on their first 1989 album cover, Bleach. in media, often overlooked as well is how Kurt himself had been a very outspoken feminist and supporter of the emerging Riot Grrrl scene and its bands. you can find more on that under this blogs 'kurt cobain' tag🥰
moving on cuz it has nothing to do with this really. i wanted to document the very few shows bikini kill had with nirvana. fliers and dates, etc. under cut.
EARLY
REKO MUSE, OLYMPIA, WA: JUNE 16, 1989.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
pictured on the left is a flier Kathleen Hanna had made for a benefit show at Reko Muse, dated for Friday, June 16, 1989. Nirvana opened for the band Lush, and the show was hosted by Tammy Rae Carland. Tobi Vail joined the stage with Nirvana. x.
REKO MUSE, OLYMPIA, WA: APRIL 1, 1989.
Tumblr media
hosted by Kathleen Hanna at Reko Muse, Nirvana played with Tree House and Helltrout on April 1, 1989. the cover album for their 1989 album Bleach was shot here, by Tracy Marander.
Tumblr media
THE MUSHROOM, OLYMPIA, WA: FEBRUARY 9, 1991.
Tumblr media
scheduled to play with Giant Henry and Bikini Kill ("plus maybe a cool band too."), Nirvana ended up not playing at this show due to Krist not being able to make it. instead Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, and BK guitarist Billy Karen, played on stage with Kill Rock Stars' co-founder Slim Moon's band, Witchypoo.
BIKNI KILL:
OK HOTEL, SEATTLE, WA: APRIL 17, 1991.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bikini Kill opened for Fitz of Depression and Nirvana. Nirvana played an early version of Smells Like Teen Spirit for (what i believe!) the first time.
THE PARAMOUNT THEATRE, SEATTLE, WA: OCTOBER 31, 1991 (HALLOWEEN SHOW)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bikini Kill opened for Mudhoney and Nirvana.

What new music would Hyde like in the 80s? The only things I've got are...
1. Bruce Springsteen. He would think Reagan using "Born in the USA" in his '84 presidential campaign is hilarious.
2. The last dying breath of the 70s, in the very early 80s (AC/DC, Another Brick in the Wall, etc).
3. The random mainstream anti-establishment that came out every once in awhile in the 80s (ik, hypocritical). Like Dirty Laundry, Money for Nothing, etc.
4. The very beginnings of grunge in the late 80s. I'm totally music illiterate in this regard, so any suggestions?
5. And Hyde would hate hair metal. Kelso would love it. Eric would mostly like softer 80s rock, like Genesis, Tears for Fears, Foreigner, Chicago, Journey, Huey Lewis and the News, etc.
You've started a good list there. 😃 I agree with what you wrote. The music he'd like in the early '80s would be by people and bands he already enjoyed in the '70s.
While Hyde would appreciate Eddie Van Halen's guitar work, he wouldn't like Van Halen as a band. Kelso, on the other hand, would think this band was created for him.
(I could go on about what Hyde wouldn't like, but that's not your ask. 😅)
He'd like:
Run-D.M.C.
Sonic Youth
Black Flag
Social Distortion
Green River
Mudhoney
Soundgarden
Nirvana (Bleach came out in 1989; it's my favorite Nirvana album, lol)
L7
Fugazi
Other good '80s bands exist (e.g., U2, Devo, They Might Be Giants, X, Living Colour, etc., but their musical style might not be to Hyde's liking).
He would despise MTV, in large part because of the musicians and bands it features, the commercialism and homogeneity of the bands, the inauthenticity plaguing mainstream rock. He'd stick to going to rock clubs to see his '80s bands play.

Wiggle Wednesday
Doing my first Wiggle Wednesday before it's too late. Thank you @scoops-aboy86 for the tag!
Okay, I've had three worms in my head just knotted together trying to tug to different interests, so stay with me here. First, I've been thinking about that Steve Harrington coming out in his thirties post that I made yesterday—him seeing George Michael come out and finding the footing he needed to come out himself. Been thinking about maybe writing that, if people are interested. Idea in this post, if you wanted to check it out.
The second worm has been Punk Steve and Platonic Stobin (in the '90s) courtesy of an amazing ask in my inbox. Just trying to fulfill the prompt, but I, alas, am not a punk. Not really my go-to genre. So I've been trying to figure out how somebody—Steve specifically—would organically discover punk culture. Going from where my knowledge is and going with whatever info my stepdad gives me, as he's way into the punk genre and knows more than me. And so I've been mapping out like a tree of bands with similar genres or similar members or...whatever. I've gotten from what I currently see as Robin's favorite bands/artists that Steve leeches from—Blondie to Le Tigre to Bikini Overkill to The Slits. And Steve inherently liking those and discovering that he does enjoy the sound of punk, but mainly hardcore and ska? And also grunge; especially Nirvana, which had punk influence. So right now it's just a music hodgepodge of bands like: Nirvana, Mudhoney, Fugazi, T.S.O.L., Operation Ivy, Rancid, NOFX, but also bands like: The Slits, The Clash, Ramones (just these three that really kick off his interest, you feel me?). I dunno where I'm going with this, but I've just been trying to figure out Punk Steve in a realistic way from where he's at in the show and, y'know, where he'd be in the '90s.
The last worm has been where I want to go with Love at First Trim, my single parent Eddie/hairstylist Steve fic. I've got an old WIP ask to fulfill that has to do with this fic, but I'm sort of stuck right now with this piece. So I've been focusing mostly on newer projects as well as my Steddie Big Bang.
Yeah. I've got a whole handful of worms going on up in my big brain.
No pressure tags: @ataliagold @sidekick-hero @hotluncheddie @pearynice and uhh....anybody else who'd like to. I'm not sure who's done this already, mine is super late to the party (oops).
