Mrs. Sidhu Investigates
There’s a new mystery on Acorn, another in it’s stable of homegrown mysteries. It is not riveting stuff and follows a well-worn pattern of nosy amateur sleuth and cranky detective solving crimes together. It had a cozy lightweight feel and reminded me of Rosemary and Thyme or Heddy Wainthrop. The lead actress Meera Syal really makes the show stand out with her wit and charisma.
@pumpkinspicelove I think you’d like it

My media this week (14-20 Jan 2024)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
Death in Soho (Augusta Peel #1) (Emily Organ, author; Sarah Nichols, narrator) - acceptable cozy mystery set post-WWI. Perfectly cromulent and will probably read another when I'm craving an uncomplicated read. Did appreciate that Miss Peel is middle-aged, not an ingenue/flapper
Ever Since New York (AHM1121) - 94K, shrunkyclunks omegaverse - just a really satisfying omegaverse fic, loved these versions of them
Running on Air (eleventy7) - 74K, drarry - it's 8 yrs post-war, draco's been missing for 3 of them and harry's been assigned the cold case. There's driving and melancholy and eventually sorting out feelings and stuff
💖💖 +199K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
Quench (AidaRonan) - MCU: shrunkyclunks, 9K - reread, all time forever fave with possibly my fave description of thick steve: 'built like a mack truck made out of ribeye' (all the simile action in this fic is fantastic tbh)
This Light-Struck Country (TentacleParty) - The Witcher: eskel/oc (monster), 18K - some truly quality monsterfucking
sunrise supplications (liadan14) - The Old Guard: kaysanova, 12K - great modern AU enemies-to-lovers with a very clever spin on joe & nicky's canonical meeting
Slow Boat to China (Penguinjava) - A Charm of Magpies series (KJ Charles): Merrick & Lucien, 7K - wonderful vignette of the boat trip to china after lucien's horrible father banished them & the foundation of their relationship
📺 STUFF I WATCHED 📺
Brooklyn Nine-Nine - s8, e1-4
Dirty Laundry - s3, e10
D20: Fantasy High: Junior Year - "Summer Breakdown" (s21, e2)
D20: Adventuring Party - "Fs Get Defgrees" (s16, e2)

There are two things that have been occupying my mind today.
1. Apparently when Larian recently updated BG3, they made some adjustments to the body physics. I found this out because I rolled up a new character last night and chose a male character this time and when I went to, er, pick my penis, I found that they'd put some... dangle in the dingle, as one might say. So that was fun. :D
2. If you're a fan of shows like Midsomer Murders, Death in Paradise, Miss Fisher and so on, I thoroughly recommend watching Mrs Sidhu Investigates. It is delightful. It's on Acorn so you can watch it directly through there or through Amazon Video or wherever else Acorn has done their deals. And if you go and watch it, we might get some more of Mrs Sidhu.

I am two episodes into Mrs Sidhu Investigates and all I can say is that it makes me crave delicious Indian food.
It is a fun quirky detective mystery show, if you like those. Mrs Sidhu, widowed owner of a catering company who embraces being a nosy auntie and ends up catering an unusually number of events where people get murdered and proceeds to ply witnesses and the detectives with food until they give her what she needs to solve the case.
But mostly the food.

just started Mrs. Sidhu Investigates and she turned down a catering client because she could see how miserable the bride to be was about the wedding
Guy storms out but the girl stops, turns back, and thanks her for saying out loud what she'd been afraid to say
I already love Mrs. Sidhu, she seems very awesome

So I started 'Mrs Sidhu Investigates' with Assad's buddy Gurjeet Singh... and there is the scene in which all the tech in the room go blink-buzz and this exchange happens 😅

Happy Birthday actress Sara Stewart, born on June 28, 1966 in Edinburgh.
Saras parents were from the US and she spent some of her childhood, there before joining the illustrious Royal Central School of Speech & Drama, in London, whose former pupils include, Laurence Olivier, Vanessa Redgrave, Judi Dench and Harold Pinter.
Sara is a very hard working actress, as well a theatre work she has starred in so many well known TV series I can’t name them all but they include, Taggart (of course), Drop the Dead Donkey, EastEnders, Fresh Meat, Holby City, Monarch of the Glen, Rebus, Unforgotten, Doctor Foster and Ashes to Ashes.
Perhaps her most famous role is that of Stella in the Channel four drama series Sugar Rush which ran for two seasons in 2005 -2006.
Of late Sara has been in Shakespeare & Hathaway, La Fortuna and Father Brown as well as two crime series Grace, with the excellent John Simm and Dalgliesh. Last year she appeared in Mrs Sidhu Investigates
Next up for her is an adaptation of the BBC Radio 4 play Mrs Sidhu Investigates
On stage Sara has played leading roles at the National Theatre, RSC, Donmar Warehouse, the Old Vic, and the Royal Court. In the West End she played Esther in The Price, Myra in Hay Fever and Claudia in Enron. She has just finished appearing in Murder on the Orient Express, directed by Jonathan Church, at Bath Theatre Royal.
Sara is a breast cancer survivor and advocates for causes that promote awareness of and fighting the disease. Her best pal in nursery and primary schools in Edinburgh was Shirley Manson of Goodbye Mr MacKenzie and Garbage.

My media this week (28 Jan-3 Feb 2024)

📚 STUFF I READ 📚
🥰 The Last Devil to Die (Thursday Murder Club #4) (Richard Osman, author; Fiona Shaw, narrator) - still loving the characters, love to hang out with them & Osman's plots move along nicely so you don't get bored at all. Fiona Shaw's narration is great & as a little treat she & Osman have a nice little chat at the end.
🥰 Four Letter Word For Intercourse (bendingsignpost) - 194K, destiel AU - adult college student Dean & professor (and phone sex worker) Cas - LOVE this fic so much & had kind of forgotten about it until it came up as a rec in one of my romance discord servers. Just, so good.
😊 Mrs Sidhu Investigates (Suk Pannu, author; full voice cast) - 2 episodes of the BBC Radio 4 program: #1 Murder with Masala; #2 Mrs Sidhu's Dangerous Highland Game - I prefer the slight changes made for the TV show's characterizations but still eminently enjoyable. (Meera Syal still absolutely rules!)
🥰 Lucky Bounce (Cait Nary) - extremely delightful hockey romance. Low/no angst, charming, cutie MCs. Definitely in the 'no plot, just vibes' category which honestly I love when done skillfully.
💖💖 +102K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
Ye Olde YouTube Love Story (Aria_Lerendeair) - The Sandman: Dreamling, 7K - love dreamling human AUs
Any Givens Sundae (dancinbutterfly) - Justified: Boyd/Raylan, 25K - excellently written 'what-if' pinging off a random line of dialogue: what IF Raylan had retired & decided to sell ice cream?
A Warning from Henry the Eighth (Writer_at_the_Table) - "I'm Henry VIII I Am" - Herman's Hermits: , 152 - a villianelle about I'm 'Enry The Eighth by Herman's Hermits - the creativity & cleverness of fan makers truly is boundless
master of a nothing place (strzyga) - Star Trek: Spirk, 6K - short, great fic about Spock going feral when they're trapped on a planet
