In the past, people in the Animal Crossing community would make fun of Tom Nook as a sleazy landlord. Since then, he's really rehabilitated his image as this 'heart of gold' businessman (he's the one who puts bells and furniture in trees for you to find! he adopted orphans! he donates to charity!), but New Horizons genuinely paints the most devious version of him.

He's successfully privatized settler colonialism: you pay HIM to move to a "deserted island" (which apparently the oceans in the AC world are just full of) and start a colony that he is directly invested in. At best he's running a weird vacation package scam (you arrive on the island with no money and in debt for "using his services"). At worst, he's using you to set up company towns. For god's sake, he literally has his own fake currency that he forces you to use to pay off your debt. But don't worry, he's repackaged it in a way that definitely doesn't sound like an MLM scam: the Nook Mileage Program!

You're no longer just his tenant or his temporary part-timer, you're his business lackey. The entire tutorial section of the game has you spending actual weeks running around completing tasks and doing hard labor to set up his colony. You're even tasked with preparing his properties and finding buyers for them. No, you aren't a tenant anymore. You work for the landlord. You are directly responsible for finding tenants for him. And he doesn't even fucking pay you. Not for setting up town hall and museum, or his nephew's shop –– which is the ONLY store on the entire island that sells necessities –– or bringing KK Slider to town, or helping populate his town. Not a single cent. No, actually, you have to pay HIM to BUY infrastructure like bridges and stairs and park benches. And all the while, he's telling you're the "resident representative"; you get to call the shots! That the reward is the community's progress. That what you're doing is in everyone's best interest (but most importantly, his).

Since NH's release, people have done a lot of legwork to say that Tom Nook isn't a capitalist while the game shows him at his very worst. He owns the only general store in town. You're forced to use a phone that he modified and branded as his own. Buy Nook-branded furniture and merchandise at the self-serve kiosk in the town hall, a governmental building! There's no conflict of interest here!

But hey, if you're tired of being the landlord/business mogul's goon, you can also find work as a deluxe resort home designer for a company that also pays you in their special company currency that can only be used to buy their products instead of a real salary! Because that's what the Animal Crossing franchise needs! More vacation homes!!!

#this is a really long winded way to say i really really really really hate new horizon's storyline and player role #i really hate that not only your house but the entire TOWN. the whole COMMUNITY you're a part of is owed to tom nook's business #i really hate the “vacation getaway package” angle because it shows just how commercialized the entire premise of nh is #and how lost the game is in its original core concept #animal crossing is about the experience of moving to a new town and becoming a part of that community #just to compare: all past ac games have a similar opening #you're on a bus or train or taxi to someplace new. a stranger strikes up a conversation and you get to know them before arriving #new horizons opens with you at customer service desk filling out an client application before a flight.#in prev games working for nook in the tutorial is meant to be demeaning. you want it to be over with so you can actually start living life #but in new horizons working for tom nook IS your life. and it's so rewarding! don't you feel rewarded?#you aren't a person. you aren't a new neighbor. you're tom nook's client. and then his unpaid employee. and the game insists it's fun to be #that's how void the game is #because it's bad enough that a rpg life sim got turned into a sandbox game where you have to build the town yourself #but the only reason why you're building it is because the landlord who you're in debt to TOLD you to build it.#everything is a rewards program! everything is a tour service! be sure to do your daily tasks to earn nook bucks to spend on nook merch!#that really sucks imo.#i mean. the entire game is based around the vacationing industry. of course it all feels fake and temporary. it's only a vacation.#long post #rant #not art #god the fact that your starter villagers can't even decide where to live you have to decide for them #i've never played a game that does the opposite of handholding #where instead it's the PLAYER who has to handhold the npcs through everything. and newsflash!! it's really exhausting and boring

Keep thinking of Rosie allowing everyone else to experience the trauma of war around him in any way they need to. Whether it be after listening to his crew member choke through the Munster story, reaching a hand out to comfort him, making sure the replacements are all settled and feel comfortable with him - establishing that he's someone who can be trusted with any issues - and listening to Crosby tell him he's scared he's becoming a monster and reassuring him, and yet refuses to give himself the same grace.

Thinking about how he doesn't tell Crosby about what he saw after he was shot down, what he witnessed in that camp. He's never really the one telling any stories in the series. He listens and watches, lets others say whatever they need to, all the while keeping his cards close to his chest.

Thinking about Rosie smiling while watching his crew and the other airmen enjoying themselves at the flak house, and yet not allowing himself the same enjoyment. Thinking about how the doctor at the flak house got Rosie to look after himself only when he framed it that looking after himself is looking after his crew.

Thinking about Rosie re-upping, choking slightly on his words as he explains he can't bare the thought of sending some rookie in his place to only get himself and his crew killed.

He won't give himself the grace or patience he deserves, but by god he'll take care of everyone around him.

Angsty story idea I just had:

Wild is feeling homesick for the home he had before the calamity and before he drew the Master Sword. All the other Links have their places of origin and he wants to know his own. He asks Flora but she doesn’t know where his home was. She only knew him at the castle. He prays to Hylia to show him his home.

Later, the Chain's in his Hyrule and they’re riding horses somewhere and Wild sees a ruined house out in the wilderness surrounded by blue nightshade (which is the symbolic flower of BotW/TotK Link). He realizes that this is his home and he ends up having a long memory of some of his life as a child living there.

He then finds something from that old time like a buried chest of valuables his family buried before the Calamity for safekeeping.

#based on my headcanon that Wild's house isn't the Hateno house or a house in castletown or in the military training camp #but is a random homestead somewhere around Hyrule #historically it is a thing people do--bury their money or jewelry or precious belongings for safekeeping #especially when disaster or destruction is expected or imminent #that's farmers in modern times sometimes find caches of coins or arrowheads or jewelry in their fields when they plough #I can imagine Wild and sister and dad burying their precious items before Wild and knight dad report for service before the calamity #and sister probably went to live with someone else or moved somewhere ''safe''#I wonder if she survived #I know she probably didn't though #anyways #I'll stop rambling #linked universe #lu wild #story idea #anyone can adopt this idea

im out here doing ap level analysis on this series of events trying to figure out how and why a thing happened in a decade old minecraft series

#apollo's tag #hi everyone i'm watching tucker's pov of the day dianite joined #and trying to figure out exactly why he got so mad at tom that he was willing to make a deal with god to get revenge against him #and i'm pretty sure i can pinpoint the exact moment that he just went 'ok thats it fuck this shit' and went all in #you see tom moved his whole house like fifty blocks off of the mountain he lived on so that it was suspended in midair #and because of that the cactus pit tucker had built under it was exposed #and his horse (who he had just spent like twenty minutes getting out of a ravine) wandered into it and died #and he thought that tom led it in on purpose when he /hadnt/#the prank was actually genuinely completely harmless and they get that figured out later but by that point tucker had already made a deal #with mianite to get a sword to get his revenge against tom with and the payment was that he'd be in his service #and dianite ended up giving tom a sword as well so that he would be even #and made his payment being that he had to be in his service as well #so thats how all of this started.#because of a horse. and a misunderstanding. and two gods with a longstanding feud who eventually used these two to further their agendas #down on the mortal plane.#/Man./

Just wanted to thank you for taking the time and effort to put together the long climate/environment post, especially the online resources. I've wanted to replace the neglected/dead non-native plants at my place with native plants for months, but didn't know where to start my search for species except to walk around my local nature preserve trying to find something that isn't invasive lol. I'll be able to start (re)introducing native plants this month because of you :-)

If you'd like more directed guidance on native plants, I can probably point you in the right direction if you can give me a general area to work with (state would suffice!). In general, go for keystone species- those that are common in your area and support many kinds of insects- or pollinator favorites, or host plants for rare/imperiled butterflies/bees/moths.

#glad I could help :)#unfortunately I think too many people forget that helping the environment is much more than recycling or taking public transit #the most direct tangible difference comes from preserving habitat #because that's where ecosystem services come from - clean air and water and carbon sequestration and fish/game habitat #and much more. we need biodiversity and functioning ecosystems to be able to cope with climate change. if habitat is lost and #fragmented then local populations of plants and animals will struggle to persist #they need to be able to move through the landscape safely. to migrate and shift their ranges and find food #they need to maintain gene flow and a source of new individuals to keep populations alive #habitat fragmentation is as insidious a threat as habitat loss. every time a new housing development is built we chop up the land more #but it's easy to restore those stepping stones #and the effects are measurable. you'd be surprised how many species including rare ones can show up in these little patches #because a corridor can support many more species than each patch alone. connection trumps isolation. connection saves us.#the earth is a living breathing thing. the soil is alive the water is alive. this entire biosphere coevolved together. we can't break it up

I have to accept that its been more than a week and I cannot count on homecare to help me out. I need to find a way out of this situation alone. Sigh. I just wanna be able to go out again. I hate being trapped in my home. Why did I have to live in a flat with stairs.
