I've been seeing a lot of hate for dragons rising and the later seasons of ninjago and I have my thoughts. As usual. Im a very thought filled person. So I'm gonna tell you all my very correct and right opinion on the matter. Also it's very long be warned now 🧙♂️ (little recap at the very end in case you dont wanna read the whole thingg)
The later seasons of Lego ninjago and the entirety of Dragons Rising is not bad. It's just different.
The first season of lego ninjago came out in 2011.
The expectations for a kids show in 2011 are different than the expectations in 2024. The humor kids like is going to change naturally over the years. The tropes in media that kids like is going to change over the years.
We were the target audience when the show first came out, because we were kids. It's a show aimed for a younger audience. Unfortunately, the intended audience did not change as we got older. The show is still aimed at a younger audience, but guess what? There's new kids. The age range is filled with new people. And to still have their target audience hit, they are obviously going to have to change a few things so the kids nowadays will want to watch the show.
The original seasons had more focus on the character vs character conflics. Of course it dabbled in characters having internal struggles and side plots related to building/destroying relationships, but those were more episode specific and he newer seasons just delve more into it for multiple episodes. There was a focus on the fighting, on the action, on the cool outfits and mech armor. The new seasons are still fighting bad guys, with all of the cool effects, but also fighting feelings. You can do both at once. Shocker, I know. Why is there more focus on emotions? Because that's the standard in well written shows these days.
The humor is less characters making fun of eachother, and more a dead silence filled with a silly sound effect. This is one of the things that irked me, but it's okay. My humor is not the humor of the intended audience. The space is intended for the audience to have the audible laughter/reaction. Quick reminder who the show is intended for. (I hold up a sign saying "new generation of young people with different humor then people my age".)
The characters are not annoying. The characters are not weak, or pitiful, or embarrassing. A character having emotions other than love or anger or happiness is okay. Arin not feeling worthy enough for his team? Guess what? That's an emotion lots of people feel. This character is allowed to have self doubt. Lloyd having panic attacks from his visions? Hey, his visions scared him! Characters are allowed to be scared, and have a reaction to being scared.
Characters are allowed to be replaced. I know, I loved the original elemental masters, and wish they could come back for a cameo now and then. Would love to see Griffin Turner once and a while. But you have to remember in the canon, it's been years. Time passes. Wanna know what happens when time passes? People die, people move on, people come into others lives. The new elemental master of air is fine. She's allowed to exist. Do you honestly expect Morro to show back up and be like "omg hiii >< I'm here I want my power back !!" Be honest with yourselves.
Final thought: who cares if characters are gay. A background character wears a nonbinary flag on their jacket?!?!?!? It must be armageddon!! Come on now. One or two flags in the background isn't the end of the world. Cole and Geo's relationship has no effect on the main plot. Geo could be replaced by any character, or even removed, and the plot would still go forward. Gay people aren't out to get you, or turn your show woke, or indoctrinate your kids. They're just there. Cole is still Cole, and Geo is cool. Another thing about Geo: I will not take Geo slander from lava shippers. He is very sweet and kind and just because Cole is not with Kai doesn't mean yall should hate on him. Also I don't even think Cole and Geo are 100% confirmed. So why is everyone going bananas over it? Very silly behavior if you ask me.
That's all I have to say thank you for coming to my tedtalk 🧙♂️
Recap: the target audience is young people, young people are different now then when we were young, they have different humor, it's fine for characters to be emotional, new characters aren't the end of the world, gay people are fine.

Mirror - We are born of love; love is our mother
Morro had always believed – or rather, he'd thought he'd known – that he'd been abandoned by his parents, but he'd pushed that aside in his need for survival. And then Sensei Wu had found him and things had changed for a short while. He'd had a home, where his belly was always full, a room that was all his own, and a closet of clothes just for him.
But he'd been abandoned – no, that wasn't right, he'd abandoned Wu, in his pursuit to be the Green Ninja, but he'd thought it an indisputible fact. His parents, or maybe just one, had abandoned him in the streets of Jamanakai Village. And now . . .
When Morro had first looked at that picture, it hadn't seemed all that special, but when he had looked closer to see the Master of Wind . . . She had looked nothing like he imagined, all things considered. When he'd imagined the previous Masters of Wind, they hadn't looked so . . . kind, or gentle. They'd always looked mean, or stone-faced, in his imagination.
Eteri – his mother, the one he'd thought had abandoned him – had looked so kind, more like Lloyd with his bleeding heart, rather than Morro. Rather, he looked more like Aryan, the Master of Smoke, with his downturned brow, and sharp, angular features.
He couldn't take it, so he fled, but he only found himself in a wing of the Monastery that had more drawings of the previous Elemental Alliance. Not all were of them in their GI's, and he found hinself staring at one in particular.
Eteri was sitting against a cherry blossom tree, cradling a baby in her arms, looking down with a smile and adoration in her eyes. The picture was done in watercolor, and he wondered what his mother would have looked like in real life.
Her hair was the same inky black as his, with pale green streaks the color of jade – which were darker than his own emerald streaks –, falling around her face in slight waves. Her eyes were grey – no, green or . . . They looked like river stones covered in dark green moss, so different from his green-black eyes of rotting undergrowth.
Her skin was a beautiful shade of light brown with a reddish undertone the near opposite of his own sickly white pallor. In all, he didn't think he looked anything like her and his heart burned as if he was being dragged beneath the waves of Stiix again.
Biting his lip in his efforts to keep himself from crying, he didn't notice the blood beading or Garmadon coming around the bend. Morro's entire body tensed when the man came to stand at his side, looking at the picture with an exhaustion and an ache.
"You look so much like her, I am surprised I did not realize who you were sooner," Garmadon admitted, seemingly not noticing how his words – those simple words – had Morro's lungs freezing.
"I think you've gone blind!" Morro snarled, forcing hinself to speak past the lump in his throat. "I don't look anything like her!"
Garmadon turned to look at him, dark brown eyes glinting with a dark red sheen that seemed more threatening than ever, "I fought alongside Eteri for nearly 23 years, spent more time than I can remember training with her or simply spending time in her company. You look very similar to Eteri."
Morro drew himself up . . . to what? Yell and scream? When had had that helped? When had it become so much harder to be angry?
"How? How do I look like her?"
"Your eyes are the same," Garmadon began, smiling slightly at the sneer he recieved. "I do not mean color. Eteri was the gentlest of us all, until she was pushed and then all bets were off. You could always see every emotion going through her mind in her eyes, just as I can with you."
Morro reeled back, confused, before he remembered all the times Lloyd would stare into his eyes and then, he would either push harder or back off, as if he knew which one he needed.
"You are taller than she was, but otherwise you could be siblings. I have no doubt in my mind that she's smacking Aryan around for making her son so tall," Garmadon laughed to himself.
"What happened?"
That took the mirth out of Garmadon.
"The Emporer sent an army, and we attacked to keep them away from the Monastery but we didn't realize it was a trap. He had some of his soldiers sneak into the Monastery in the hopes of taking away the two babies that lay within. You and Lily. They only succeeded in taking you, and for that they suffered."
"Never had I seen Eteri so angry. Jiang was as well. Together they summonded a storm so powerful that no soldier from his army survived that day. The rivers were dies red for days from the massacre but we succeeded in weakening the Emporer. Over half of his force had been apart of that army and we began to prevail."
"Aryan and Eteri worked tirelessly to find you . . . And that was their downfall. I do not know all the details, but I know they were outmatched and exhausted but they won. It came at the cost of their lives. When we found them, Aryan – Aryan was already gone, and Eteri begged Keahi to find you, for her."
"He died searching for you."
Morro frowned as the image of red, bloodstained and cracked armor flashed in his memories. "He– Did he wear a necklace with a jade amulet?"
"Yes. How did you–"
"He got me to Jamanakai but he died from his injuries," Morro said, giving a bitter laugh. "I thought he was just someone I'd dreamed of but . . ."
"Keahi was your godfather, and he loved you as his own."
"Yeah, lot of good that did him." Once again, Morro stalked off.
Instead of wandering in the Monastery, he left, unable to be in this place that had once hosted his parents, his family.

Wu's Diary #5: Battle Between Brothers
An excerpt of one of Wu's old diaries:
Date: XX/XX/XXXX
"It finally happened. The day were my brother finally turned himself away from any last good he had in his heart. And I know this is my fault. It's all my fault. And now I'll never be able to apologize to him for all my sins.
I saw him going into our armory. Not any part of the armory, but the place where the Golden Weapons were residing. Lately, he has been all silent and distant, but I could never believe he would do something drastic.
And still, there he was. More pale from the venom than never, with his eyes glowing a intense shade of red. I knew, at that moment, that my brother was long gone. And still, I tried to intervene, to still talk some sense into his head.
Bringing our father did nothing, as my brother lost any kind of interest in his wishes since he passed away. At the mention of Lloyd and Misako, however, I felt a small glimpse of my dear in those cruel eyes. But even that wasn't enough.
So we battled. Not just a simple sparr or for some innocent bickery. This time, all of Ninjago was at stake. I couldn't let my brother use the Golden Weapons for whatever he was trying to do.
However, I was not able to fight against him. He was always the stronger one, the fiercy one. I didn't had a chance. And still, when he got me in the ground and braced himself to his final blow, a miracle happened.
The robes that our father left to us... The ones he echanted with whatever mystical powers exist in this world, protected me. Not only my clothes, but even the Golden Weapons. It was like something inside them had been given life, and they united themselves, creating a blast that exploded directly at my brother.
Though he did survived the attack, something was wrong. Perphaps was the tremendous power of the weapons combined, perphaps it was something unconcious from me. But my brother wasn't the same person in front of me anymore.
His skin was darker than the night. His eyes became even more red. I don't had a doubt that whatever he had become, it wasn't normal anymore. He shared a faint resemblance with the few Oni drawings we saw in the past.
Furious, he asked me what had I done to him. I knew I wouldn't be lucky trough his next attack, so I did the only thing that seemed safe to do, even though I resent my actions.
With the Nunchucks of Lightning, I bolted his body, so much that I'm sure I was able to see his bones beyond his flesh. Having stopped him for a moment, I quickly used the Scythe of Quakes to break a fissure in our floor. From there, the Golden Weapons did the rest. They span around Garmadon, clobbing and pushing him, until he fell trough the fissure, in a blooddy, raw scream.
I'll never be able to forget that.
I truly hope he is still alive, that the fall didn't take his life... But deep down, I know there is no way for me to know. I will never be able to see my brother again, no matter if he is dead or alive. Just like with Morro.
Why do I keep hurting the ones I care about?"

Since I have the Bad Endings Au on the brain, I wanna ramble a bit about Jay and Cole because every time I think about them I start to go feral (in a good way)
I'll put some of it under a cut since this gets pretty long
Jay and Cole parallel each other soo well that it's kind of crazy since it wasn't entirely intentional, it just sort of happened that way. So looking at their backstories, they're pretty similar. Both of them felt mistreated by the other ninja to the point where they wanted to take revenge on them. Both of them defeated the ninja when given the chance, but in the end they both handled it in completely different ways.
Cole very quickly was overcome with guilt. Morro called him out on what he did and it immediately hit him like a brick. He didn't feel good about what he did and it began to spiral into some self hatred and he eventually became very apathetic. He had killed his friends without thinking things through and now they were gone forever. Although to give him the benefit of the doubt, he was manipulated into doing so as he was in a very vulnerable mental state at the time and Yang took advantage of that to try and 'help' Cole be remembered. But that doesn't change the fact that Cole still did it and it haunts him every day of his life. He also ends up isolating himself afterwards, not wanting to face any of the family he has left even though he desperately doesn't want to be alone. That's the main reason he joins the other BE!Ninja in the first place, because for the first time in a long time, he isn't alone. And even though he doesn't want to go through with the others' plan, he stays with them since he has nowhere else to go because he thinks there's no way the normal ninja would accept him after what he's done.
And then we look at Jay who trapped the remaining ninja in his sword after he overthrew Nadakhan and became the new captain of Misfortune's Keep. Jay felt no remorse from trapping his friends. In fact, once he had finished the job, he smiled. He was happy about it. Jay truly believed the others didn't care about him, that they left him on Misfortune's Keep to rot for months. And by the time they had finally shown up to save him, he had gone through so much that no amount of explaining was gonna get him to change his mind. He had already saved himself, he didn't need the others to swoop him and save him after they treated him so terrible and abandoned him for months. And after everything was done, Jay didn't have anyone to tell him he had fucked up. Nobody on his crew would ever suggest anything like that, obviously none of the ninja were left to call him out, there was nobody to make him open his eyes to what he had become. And after living life as a pirate captain surrounded by people who would listen to him without question, people who were scared of him, he grew to love it. The ninja never took him seriously, but his crew HAD to take him seriously because they were terrified of the consequences. And when he met the BE!Ninja, he was mainly just uncomfortable seeing the other ninja again because he had grown so angry at them, but he was willing to help out with the plan to take out the other ninja because he was just that far gone.
And when the two of them meet each other for the first time, Cole is just completely shocked to see Jay at all since the Jay from his timeline is dead. And though he acts pretty cold towards him since that's just how Cole is now, he also doesn't want to leave his side because he misses Jay so much. And even though this isn't his Jay, it's still Jay. Meanwhile, Jay is angry and annoyed at having to deal with Cole. He wants nothing to do with him and turns down any offer Cole makes to help him since he doesn't need help from anyone, especially Cole. He eventually 'comes around', but that's really only because they team up with the other BE!Ninja. And yeah, over time Jay does genuinely grow closer to Cole and both of them open up about their pasts and what happened to them, but Jay always has more walls up than Cole does. He's more vague, he snaps more easily, he quickly shuts Cole down when he starts asking too many questions. Cole on the other hand lays everything down for Jay, (although he is still hesitant to open up) He lets his guard down and lets Jay realize just how lonely he's been in his timeline.
And the two of them realize just how similar they are, but they both end up going different paths. Cole realizes more and more that what he's doing is wrong, that he's just gonna end up making another terrible mistake if he continues down this path. He realizes just how messed but the other BE!Ninja are, he realizes that they must be hurting deep down, just like he is. But Jay just continues to spiral further and further. Once again he's with a group that doesn't take him seriously. The only one who seems to do that is Cole, but even then Cole still doesn't always treat him like the threat he is. Even worse is that Nya, the one he felt the most anger towards, isn't even helping. BE!Nya wants nothing to do with the others and actively treats Jay like he doesn't matter (though she treats everyone like that, her only real loyalty is to the Overlord). So Jay just gets more snappy, more violent, more determined to defeat their good counterparts because that'll prove to the others that he is a threat and that he should be taken seriously. Cole grows and slowly betters himself while Jay only gets worse.
God I just have so many thoughts about these two. I mean, I have a lot of thoughts about all the BE!Ninja, but Jay and Cole especially love to live in my head rent free. And there's one last little detail that I wanna point out with these two because I just think it's neat.
When Cole took out the other ninja in his timeline, the first one he went after was Jay. When Jay trapped the other ninja on his sword, the last one he trapped was Cole.
Idk I just think that's a neat detail. Anyway, I'm done rambling for now. Maybe I'll ramble about some of the other BE!Ninja in the future. I guess if there's anyone specific you want me to talk about let me know, but otherwise I'm just gonna end this post here.
#ninjago#lego ninjago#ninjago bad endings au#ninjago bad endings#bad endings cole#bad endings jay#cole brookstone#jay walker#i'm so normal about these two#<- biggest lie of my life#i think the thing with these two is it boils down to this:#cole realizes that he's broken and jay doesn't#cole knows that he fucked up and jay thinks he was completely in the right#man i could seriously talk about these two all day AAAAAA

Hey i love all the ghost warriors so i'm giving the main trio backstories.
In order to make these backstories you need to remember all ghosts were either disgraced in battle, Or they offended the FSM.
Of course, Ghoutar (chill uncle)
We love our uncle with Illeism
Probobly the most relaxed one of the four, Ghoultar dosent really have any affiliations with war, but he does have affiliations with bullying, sickness, and nothing seeming fair.
While alive (refered to as Greg or Gregory) Ghoultar was pretty much exactly like he is while dead. More relaxed, willing to help despite complaints, and of course, foodie and a tad silly.
Though, when he started speaking he could only form speach patterns in the third person. This didn't really bother his birth parents all too much despite how such would be described as a 'curse' in his time.
His father quickly left to (ninjago's version of russia idk it kind of sounds like his accsent) after finding out that he could only form speach patterns in such a way, leaving his mother to take care of him.
His mother didn't mind the so-called "curse" on her child, and simply took care of him as a mother does. Ghoultar is still particularly fond of the memories he holds of her cooking.
When he started school is where things began to go downhill. The kids at school were strict belivers in contagious curses, so likewise, Ghoultar was always getting rocks and crosses thrown at him when he was simply trying to climb trees and such.
He doubt with this all through his school years despite, but only thanks to the help of his mother...Until, she fell ill. She saddly had caught Tuberculosis just as he turned 20, and it was fatal. Since the only thing he had left was his belifs, he was angry.
He spent the rest (10-15 years) of his life searching for the FSM to get answers, but saddly he would be mistaken for an intruder by a farmer, and cut down with a sythe.
In death, he is still the foodie and sillier one in the cursed realm, shocking to the other enslaved souls of how he stays so happy.
Truly, it is because he knows his mother would be one escape away.
one escape.
For now, he simply follows Morro around and helps him out like his mother did when he was upset, in hopes Morro can help him escape and see his mother again.

Chapter 4: It Still Haunts Your Dreams
Final chapter! Thank you all so much for making this fic a sucsess. I haven't written a multi-chapter fic in this fandom since I first joined, but the reception of it makes me think I should do more of these.
And now, on with the story!
"Here," Kai yawned as he slid the mug of tea over to Lloyd on the kitchen island, "do you want to talk about it?"
"It's nothing."
"You were hyperventling in your sleep. Last time I checked, that meant something." Kai deadpanned as he brought his own mug to his lips, hoping that the chamomile would calm both of their nerves.
It had worked all of those years ago when the two of them were awake at some point every night because of Morro, but Kai was still taking in all of the changes from the Merge. How much Lloyd had changed from the Merge.
"It's really stupid, I'm sure it means nothing."
"It was another vision?"
"I think so," Lloyd nodded, tracing the rim of the mug with his finger, "I wish my uncle had given me some pointers on how to tell the difference."
"He used to meditate all the time, and something about spirit smoke but he could have been high for all I know."
"I doubt that, Master Wu was kind of a stickler with that stuff," Lloyd laughed hollowly before taking another sip of his tea, "you think Zane could help?"
"He doesn't actually dream, so he always knows when he has a vision," Kai shook his head before he realized what Lloyd had said before he asked his question, "how do you know that your uncle was strict about drugs?"
"Anyway, I'm sure it's nothing," Lloyd skated around the question a bit too quickly and Kai wondered if steam was actually coming out of his ears or if his face was enough to convey it, "oh come on, you think I actually did drugs?"
'Thank the master.'
"-more than once?"
"What?"
"I…It was while I was working in the city, washing windows." Lloyd's voice grew unnaturally quiet as he looked down at the ground.
'Right, after Nya was lost…' Now that he thought about it, he wasn't sure anyone with the exception of Cole had developed healthy coping mechanisms during that period of time.
"Anyway, the vision, it was…it wasn't as bad as the last one, with the gravestones and the hoods."
"Is that supposed to be comforting?" Kai joked, but Lloyd seemingly found no humor in it as he explained.
"I was standing in a dark room. I heard a gong being hit and then a bright, red moon rose over me. All I could think was that I had to run, I had to get out of there and when I looked back, there was a massive, glowing wolf head rising from the ground."
"Holy shit." If his mental image was anything to go by, it made sense why Lloyd had been screaming so loud that he had woken up thinking that someone was getting murdered in the monastery.
"I hope that was a fucking dream, because that is terrifying," Kai added after a beat of silence before getting up to wash the now empty mugs, "do you need to watch Starfarer or something, to get your mind off of it?"
Lloyd's nod was all the confirmation he needed to lead the young master into the living room and turn on the tv before he started flipping through the channels, hoping to find something in Ninjargon since Nya still hadn't gotten around to reprogramming the tv.
He wasn't sure when Lloyd shut his eyes, but he knew that he was still flipping through the channels when he felt the pressure on his shoulder increase and heard the light snores.
"Don't worry, bud, you're not losing me again" he whispered as he let the game show play softly in the background, "and even if your dream isn't real, I'll still protect you."

The end of the green ninja
Chapter 8 Aftermath of the change
One by one the ninja got up a while after the blast having to accept their defeat in losing Lloyd “He really seems to like blasting us away from him and running away right after.” Jay made his way over to Cole helping him up as Cole had his hand over the wound “Easy for you to say, you didn’t get headbutted with horns.” Zane was gathering some parts that fell off of Echo from the blast to help reattach it “Harumi has also escaped, this could spell trouble for us.” The nindroid noticed that they couldn’t locate Harumi when scanning the area “I just hope that Harumi hasn’t found Lloyd and got him to join her.” Kai hoped but deep down there was some doubt about what he said, Nya added “This definitely doesn’t look good at all.” They were all pretty down, normally they would have Lloyd there to give them an inspirational speech to not give up that they can do this together and that everything will be okay but Lloyd was not here to give that speech in fact they’ll never hear those heartwarming speeches again.
“So is there anything that can revert Lloyd back to normal?” Misako asked Garmadon again this time he was able to think properly, Morro seemed to have rolled his eyes as she spoke “There might be but like I said earlier not many have attempted a transformation so finding a cure is rare.” He thought it over and in came Pixel who was sent to the temple to retrieve the book that was left behind she handed it over to him and he started looking through the pages stopping at one to point at the written text “This seems to be one, we should test it first.” He handed the book over to Wu so he could read the page Garmadon was to be the test subject with a deep breath Wu carefully read over the page and once finished reading it nothing happened “Maybe it hasn’t taken affect yet, same thing happened to Lloyd.” Nya said boosting their hopes up a little but as some time went by nothing happened “Nothing. As I thought.” Garmadon closed the book and tossed it aside “Aren’t you an archeologist? You must know at least something that can change him back, you didn’t just abandon him for nothing.” Morro glared at Misako waiting for an answer, during his time possessing Lloyd he was able to look through his memories and saw on how Misako abandoned Lloyd that didn’t sit right with Morro and it made him understand the bottled anger he felt in Lloyd after being revived and talking about it with him Morro now kind of shares the same anger Lloyd feels towards his mother.
A call was coming through from the monitor they had in the monastery which ended the growing tension as that caught their attention Zane went to answer the call “Hello ninja.” Cyrus had been the one calling he looked nervous “Cyrus, what have you called us for?” Zane appeared to be the only one willing to hold a conversation “Is that uhm...Garmadon with you?” He pointed at Garmadon from his screen “I am no longer a threat if that’s what your concerned about.” He responded “No no, I wasn’t going to ask about that. I guess that explains that.” Cyrus muttered the last part which caught their attention “What do you mean by 'that explains that'?” Wu questioned and Cyrus can be heard making a deep inhale and exhale “Well since Garmadon left the sons of Garmadon have went in hiding in that tower of theirs just a few minutes ago they were seen escorting Harumi and what I assume to be...Lloyd.” Looks like she really did get him to join “May I ask exactly what has happened? All of Ninjago city has been left in the dark after the broadcasting of Lloyd’s outburst and I’m afraid we are going to have to tell them.” He glanced at everyone before finally an explanation was given which made him have the same reaction the others had “That is all I need to tell you, I have to keep this call short or else they’ll track my signal. Goodbye everyone, I wish you all luck with your mission.” The call ended.
“Attention everyone!” Harumi called to get the bikers attention on her “As you all know, Garmadon has stepped down leaving us with no one to lead us but that’s where things change. You all remember that fiasco from a few days ago? Well after being dragged along I was able to find us someone new and perhaps someone better. Everyone. Kneel before your new ruler, Lloyd Garmadon!” She stepped aside to make way for Lloyd, the bikers were all shocked to see him the way he was no one was expecting it and with that they all kneeled. “First order of business. Raid every museum in Ninjago city, only bring back artifacts of Oni. Understand? Now go!” He ordered and like that the bikers all ran out to their motorcycles to go out after that Lloyd went up to where the throne was taking a seat to look out seeing the bikers riding all over the city to museums that would contain what he wants “Might I ask exactly why you need those artifacts?” Harumi brought up and he just smirked without changing his gaze on the city “It’s simple really. With all the Oni artifacts I can find what I need next for my plan to perfection, an Oni army.”

Continuation of this post because, yeah it just got too long I couldn't handle it anymore
@sea-jello
Hmmm thinking about how long it would take them to travel all across ninjago (I think it's safe to assume to weapons are spread out as far away from each other as possible but idk) and I'm not sure it would take months (although, that does depend on about how many months you mean exactly), but also they *are* traveling by foot (and pulling Wu's cart 💀) most of the time so maybe, idk I'm probably not the best judge of distance and traveling time so. Plus it would be very easy to come up with reasons for them to be delayed either way, so whatever you think would be best. But probably at least a month. (And yeah a longer time would definitely explain Kai's desperation). Also yess the more Morro gets his hopes up the better >:3
NOT FOR SAVING HIM NO shdhd I meant like he gets mad at Kai for implying/revealing Lloyd as the green ninja (if Kai's still the first one to come to the realization in this) cuz at this point Morro's still hoping to prove himself worthy to be the green ninja, so maybe in his devastation and desperation he lashes out kind of a thing?
Hmm yeah, maybe today I'll go glance over the episodes and see if there's a good spot that stands out. And yeah 😔 BUT imagine the angst of the other ninja running into younger Morro after everything that's happened
OH YOUR RIGHT hmm idk what reason wu would have for not telling them sooner? Or doing something about Kai and Nya being left to take care of themselves? Idk it'd depend on how much he knows about the kids' situation but either way whatever his reasoning he probably thought is was for the best 🥲 but STILL THE ANGST AUGHHH
YESS EXACTLY
AUGHHH Zane's death being more incentive for him to stay away my heart 😭 (I love it)
YESSSSSS ALL OF THIS YES
I feel like Morro would be angered by how like, settled Lloyd had become in the position of green ninja at that point. And like it's just building until the fight happens.
EXACTLY SGDHD Morro barely restrains himself from flying right back up there to beat him up properly
SGDHFJFJ YEAH OKAY FAIR ILL WRITE IF YOU DRAW DEAL? WE CAN FUEL EACH OTHER
YEAH YEAH YEAH
Yeah that's fair. Morro bud you're self-destructive tendencies are showing 😭
Hmmm I almost feel like we'd need him to show up as a villain at some point if only so he can get a spot in the hall of villains and feasibly come back during dotd (that is if he dies at the end of s5). And also for fun angst and drama. But also I feel like he'd be less likely to become a villain in this? (unless it was just to be a menace to the ninja) cuz like in this he actually got the chance to learn what it meant to be a hero? So he wouldn't be as likely to put innocents in harms way? Hmmm
Oooo what if he's only pretending to be a villain? Like maybe he's set out to take down as many bad guys as possible (because he still wants to help people but also maybe he's still trying to prove himself worthy of the green gi as well) but he goes about that by pretending to be one so he can get in close with higher end dudes and take them out. But literally NOBODY knows this (the ninja may have their doubts) so everyone thinks hes a legit villain and even when he takes out a group or something everyone just assumes it's for villainous reasons and not that he's targeting them. Also he 'hates' the ninja and has no qualms about attacking them most of the time so he really sells it.
YEP YEP YEPP
Oop I hit the image limit but YAYY WE'RE GETTING SOMEWHERE WITH THE TIMELINE
Also I think so? Which green ninja reveal are you referring to specifically the Morro one or the Lloyd one?

So, I’ve only fleshed out some of these AUs. Most of them are just ideas right now. And because of that, most of the titles will be subject to change. So if there’s an asterisk next to the name, it’s a placeholder.
Ninja Swap AU-
An AU where all of the ninja swap elements, and roles (sometimes).
Wu ↔️ Garmadon (Wu gets bit instead, their elements stay the same)
Lloyd ↔️ Morro (Lloyd has wind and is a ghost, Morro has energy and is the Green Ninja)
Kai ↔️ Nya (Kai is the Cobalt Ninja with water, Nya is the Maroon Ninja with fire)
Cole ↔️ Jay (Cole is the Gold Ninja with lightning, Jay is the Bronze Ninja with earth)
Zane ↔️ Pixal (Zane is Samurai X, Pixal is the Silver Ninja with ice)
AI Jay AU-
J.A.Y (still figuring out the adjective) was an advanced AI created by Milton Dyer to be a guide for players in Prime Empire, although Jay also gave Dyer advice on the game. In-game, he was Superstar Rockin’ Jay, who was the leader of a place where players could hang out and recharge. Jay would give them tips in exchange for coins. Being the only two AI in Prime Empire, Jay and Unagami became friends.
But everything changed when Prime Empire was shut down. Jay took it the best he could, becoming friends with Scott. But Unagami refused to accept it, and tried to get the game back up and running using any means necessary. He eventually lured Libby, the Master of Lightning in, and started using her like a battery.
Jay eventually found out, and was absolutely horrified by Unagami’s actions. He helped get Libby out of the game, using her lightning powers to do it. And that got him out of the game too. They decided to stay together, and Jay took the form of a human toddler to pretend to be her kid.
Eventually, Libby died due to her being drained so much. But before she died, she made Jay the new Master of Lightning. After she died, Jay didn’t know what to do, so he just ran. Eventually he ended up at Ed and Edna’s, who adopted him. They never found out he wasn’t human, because he made sure to pretend to age. They just thought he was great with technology.
He kept all of this a secret from the ninja until Season 12. Instead of Jay activating the game, somebody else did. And he started to kind of be pulled into the game and lose his physical form, but he tried to hide it. At least until he was pulled in completely. Then, he was forced to fulfill his role as one of the game’s AI. And confront his past. I haven’t decided what happens in Season 12 yet though, but obviously the ninja find out.
Quiet Ones AU-
After Possession, Lloyd needs some time alone. So he starts going on a few small solo missions. One of those missions is to protect the Jade Princess Harumi while her parents are away on business. During that time, they become close. Lloyd opens up to her about missing his father. And Harumi subtly introduces the idea of bringing Garmadon back via the Oni masks.
Lloyd thinks it’s a cruel joke, but when he gets back he can’t help himself from investigating. And he realizes that not only would it work, but he’s part Oni as well. Although Lloyd realizes it wouldn’t be the man he knew, he’s clouded with grief. He immediately sneaks out to see Harumi and tells her he wants to do it. Harumi is a great manipulator, and she gets Lloyd to agree that they need help and should form the Sons of Garmadon.
They both take on the mantle of The Quiet One. Harumi wears a purple kimono and mask with white accents. Lloyd wears a purple gi and mask with black accents. They both start recruiting people for it, and in the beginning they’re very active leaders. But Lloyd can’t use the excuse of solo missions forever, as the others want him on team missions again. And so he leaves it to Harumi, but stays in contact (I know Pixal can trace communications, but Lloyd disguises them and Pixal has no reason to be suspicious).
Lloyd starts having doubts, the SoG seems like a very violent group. And they were bringing his father back for good, not evil. But Harumi tells him it’s fine, it’s necessary to get the masks. She also encourages him to start practicing with his Oni power, because that could make it easier for them to get the masks. It’s now around Hands of Time, and Wu is too incapacitated to fully notice, but he does get suspicious of Lloyd.
The Oni power makes Lloyd a bit insane, and Lloyd and Harumi are basically evil together now (but Lloyd still thinks he’s doing it for a good reason). When they get separated from ninja in the jungle, they no longer have to hide. So when both Lloyd and Harumi come out of the Oni Temple, not fighting at all, the ninja finally realize. I haven’t decided how the rest of SoG and Hunted goes yet.
By the way, the members of the Sons of Garmadon know there are two Quiet Ones, but they don’t know who they are. Only Ultra Violet, Killow, and Mr. E do. This is because if one of the members gets captured, they can’t tell the police who the Quiet Ones are. They also just say “The Quiet One” instead of “Quiet Ones,” which is why the ninja think it’s only Harumi.
Ninjago SW AU-
SW stands for Star Wars.
Garmadon takes the role of Darth Vader. Lloyd takes the role of Luke. Wu takes the role of Obi-Wan. The Overlord takes the role of The Emperor. Misako takes the role of Padme, I guess. Harumi rakes the role of Mara Jade. And the FSM takes the role of the Force.
Kai and Nya are both Mandalorians, from Clan Smith. They grew up on Mandalore. Cole is human, his father is a famous entertainer. He’s from Coruscant. Jay grew up on Tatooine with Ed and Edna. Zane is a robot who was raised on Hoth by Dr. Julien.
After Garmadon turned to the dark side, Misako left Lloyd at a boarding school on her home planet, Naboo. Then she travels between different planets with Jedi Temples to try to find out more about the property of the Chosen One. Lloyd grows up not knowing his mom was queen or that his father is Darth (choose name later). That’s until Wu finds him, and starts training him in the Force. He tells Lloyd that Darth (placeholder) killed his father.
He had already recruited all the other ninja by then (Lloyd is the same age as them). He chose them because they all have unique force powers passed down through generations. All except Lloyd, who’s the Chosen One. Nya starts out as a Mandalorian before finding out she’s the Jedi of Water. Also, they find Pixal along the way eventually. Nya is the pilot until Pixal is.
The ninja’s parents were Jedi too. Maya and Ray were Jedi who went into hiding after Order 66, and couldn’t return to Mandalore because they were kind of ostracized for being Jedi. Lilly was kicked out of the order for falling in love with Lou. She died of sickness before Order 66. Libber was also kicked out, and managed to drop Jay off on Tatooine before being killed by clones (who also killed ex-Jedi). Zane was built by Dr. Julien and chosen by the Jedi of Ice as his successor, after Order 66 Zane and Dr. Julien went into hiding on Hoth.
The prequels played out mostly the same, but with Garmadon and Wu instead of Anakin and Obi-Wan. The main events start a few years before A New Hope, so they’re stretched out more. There’s also a fair amount of differences, but obviously I keep the “No, I am your father” moment.
Elemental Fusion AU*-
An AU where they all merge with their elements.
The Golden Emperor AU*-
An AU with the original ending to Crystalized (Lloyd becoming evil, killing the Overlord, and taking his place.)
Ghost Shifter AU*-
An AU where Cole discovers he can still turn into a ghost after Crystalized (but each time he’s stuck longer).
Reincarnation AU*-
An Au where Lloyd is a reincarnation of the FSM.
Vampire Cole AU*-
An AU where Yang is a vampire and turns Cole into a vampire instead of a ghost.
Obligatory DotD rewrite*-
DotD rewrite, Cole becomes a villain after being forgotten.
Oni Cole AU*-
An AU where Cole discovers he’s part Oni in Hunted. Except maybe he can’t transform out of his Oni form (haven’t decided yet).
Ghost Cousins AU-
An AU where Lloyd runs away from Darkley’s but doesn’t survive, and so he ends up in the Cursed Realm with Morro.
Prince of Shintaro AU-
An AU where Lou is the King of Shintaro, making Cole the prince. Vania is his adopted sister.
Currently unnamed AU*-
A next gen AU (Nya and Jay have a boy and girl, Cole and Kai adored two boys, Zane and Pixal have a girl, and Lloyd and Harumi have no kids or a girl)
Evil Kai AU*-
An Au where Kai actually becomes evil in Tournament of Elements, he doesn’t pretend. And he has the staff for longer.
And I want to make one that’s centered on Nya, and one centered on Zane. But the ideas haven’t come to me yet.
ANYONE that has a Ninjago AU omfg, please spill, I really want to hear ur guys’ ideas, AUs are so awesome and it’s so cool that creativity can bring so much insane stuff, DROP THEM NEOWWWWWW (and if u reblog don’t put it in tags…😞) I want to read them, I’m curious…

Alright. With Crystalized seemingly pushing Llorumi we do have to talk about the incest part. And mostly the question; Is it even incest? Sounds stupid, yes.
I’ll be trying to stay objective and use fair argument combined with world lore.
Point of note, this might feel a little uncomfortable for some people because of the factuality possibly going against what some feel morally. You have now been warned.
To answer this question we first need to look at what incest actually is. This source is from the Cornell Law school in the IS.
Now this very clearly states that incest is the sexual relationship between two closely related parties like brother and sister, which is the argument we are talking about. Please note that I will not be taking the sexual part literally, since ace-spec is of course a thing everyone views different about them. For the sake of the argument we’ll assume that if they end up together they might be interested in it at some point. I will also not be taking most of the legal aspect into a count since Ninjago probably has different laws as opposed to the US. If anything they would take from Chinese and Japanese laws which… uhm…
Well let’s just say that no matter how incest-y it will get it’ll be legal in that case. Big fricking yikes to both those countries.
Back to the source, we now have to decide wether they are siblings. This source explicitly stated how the incest is between related parties, which they aren’t. There is no blood relation.
End case? No.
We now have to talk about adoption.
According to liveabout.com there is no legal way to marry as adopted siblings, not in the US at least. Which brings up the point of laws again, so I can ignore that for now. What I find more interesting is the forth sentence.
It stars how siblings, adopted by law, are siblings and can therefore not marry. Which leaves us with the question, did Garmadon actually adopt Harumi?
Yes, he took her as ‘his child’ in season 9, but I highly doubt that if they met up again in Crystalized he would suddenly have custody and be legally responsible for her crimes (by us law) since she is still a minor. And aside from that he adopted her for what, 2 or 3 in universe days? After that she died (partly because of him) and they’ve been virtually ignoring each other’s existence ever since. Yes Garmadon probably doesn’t know she’s alive, but I’m not entirely sure he’d care. Yes he went into a destructive rage when she died, but after that nothing seems to hold up. We may not have seen much of him since, but with how he felt about Lloyd in s10 I doubt he would still care about her as a parental figure, assuming he ever even did.
But of course there’s still the moral aspect. By this logic you could live alone in the woods your whole life with your child, then take another child from the streets and raise them both, and they could be married without legal or biological problems.
The reason it makes us uncomfortable is because in the scenario I just mentioned they were raised as siblings. But no matter how you look at it, Lloyd and Harumi just-
Weren’t.
They met before the ‘adoption’, they spent no time with their ‘father’ as a family, they grew up apart and met as teenagers, heck, they were friends for a week in s8 before Harumi did the whole crimeboss thing.
So, they is no blood relation, Harumi’s adoption was informal at best to a non-existent joke at worst and they have no kind of sibling relationship.
Counter argument!
This tweet was made by Tommy Andreason, one of the writers, a year ago in response to asking if it was accurate to view Morro and Lloyd as cousins since Wu took in Morro. Yo which I say
1. In all honesty these tweets have been wrong before
2. We can still apply that logic to the previous points we made.
In the Twitter argument we (almost) know Wu adopted Morro, just not legally. Meaning the legality of the Harumi adoption does not have to be considered for the argument to be “kind of right”. What should be considered however is the way zei and Morro’s relationship works. Because from every flashback we’ve seen, the s5 finale ánd Day of the Departed, we can clearly, CLEARLY tell they care. They care a lot.
Their training, their bonding, trying to save each other, and I’m sorry to say this but I just don’t see that with Garmadon here.
The closest we got was when Mystake pretended to be Harumi and Garmadon became weary of her because of not mentioning Skylor’s powers. Yes, this turned out to be accurate and he complimented Harumi for revealing the truth 2 minutes later.
And in episode 8 when she died she tried to convince him te leave to save their lives. He went on to ignore her and stay, threatening both of their lives, ignoring he regen she left and accidentally causing her death.
But even with all of this you could hold the argument that that’s just his personality, right? That was a major point in s10, right? YES. You are ABSOLUTELY right for thinking that. I for one at a huge s8-present Garmadon apologist and you could definitely view these scenes both ways. So in the end, the ‘is Garmadon a parent to Harumi and does the green cousins logic apply’ argument boils down to hoe Garmadon will react to her in Crystalized. Point of note that I have seen up until episode 17 at this point.
In the end absolutely everything boils down to how Garmadon will treat Harumi. It doesn’t matter if it will be as an ally, enemy, friend, people who have met before. As long as he doesn’t treat her as his daughter, I’m sorry people,
Then it cannot be considered incest.
And we can easily check this since he almost exclusively refers tobber as ‘my child’ or ‘my daughter’ in those few scenes. He just has to call her Harumi to her face. Heck, she just has to call him Garmadon to his face and it will prove those very fragile ‘familial bonds’ are broken. Besides, id Garmadon could disown his son just like that he could definitely do the same with an informally short term adopted child who now seems to not really care about him or at least be very disappointed in him (episode 13).
We just need one, ONE of these scenes and it’ll decide the case.
Does it seem like that incest at first glance? Yes. Can I understand the logic behind it? Yes. Can I imagine it making someone uncomfortable?DEFINITELY YES.
But in the end, when it comes down to it and you look at it from a factual and in-lore perspective, it just isn’t.
And this isn’t me smashing the ship doesn’t have problems, oh no. If you want to dislike the ship more than just ‘I don’t vibe with it’ (which is enough of a reason already) then there are tons, and I mean TONS of reasons I can definitely get behind. But in the end, this one isn’t it.
TL;DR
If you want to hate the ship don’t do it for the incest while there are perfectly viable and defendable reason to hate it.
Have a nice day!

Sink or Swim: Kai x Reader [kinda angsty]
-tbh i had a tiny crush on Kai growing up
-i still swoon over him when he's cool but like, lloyd has stolen my heart
-you all live in yang's temple still
-as a note, i write for female readers because uhhh yeah plz don't be mad at me ;-; (and either way, you can always change the words around in your head if it bothers you)
Summary: Kai needs help. You're there for him, catching him before he sinks.
Kai's got Lloyd, but who's got Kai?
Ninjago was filled with a variety of perils. Some were easier to see, such as destruction of any population within the premises of Ninjago city. Other times, it was minuscule, like a speck of dust. If you looked hard enough without blinking, you could see it. But most times it was invisible.
The sun was bright today, shining past the swiftly moving clouds as you clashed under its heat. Sparks flew as your katana slammed into Cole's, who skillfully parried your blows. You readied another combo, twisting to the right and faking a slash before spinning and striking to the left.
"Cole look out!" shouted Kai. Cole wasn't fast enough, and you knew it was because he wasn't used to using a katana. His hammer lay on the platform leading inside, right by Jay's side under the sunshine.
You suddenly realised Cole would be split in half if you didn't stop. But how could you when the inertia practically sent you flying towarss him? "Cole--!"
Clang!
Kai parried the attack. He hit your blade with so much force that it was sent flying across the courtyard, thankfully, clattering harmlessly on the ground. You heaved out a harsh sigh and slapped your knees. "That was close. Sorry Cole." He chuckled, giving Kai a good slap on the shoulder.
"For once our Hot-Head wasn't distracted by his 'oh-so-perfect' looks." Cole said. "How did you do that so fast?" Kai sheathed his sword with a shrug. It was odd to see him so quiet, especially around this time in the day. His expression remained relaxed, but it was void of its usual smug smirk. "I don't know, I just improvised."
You can't help the frown settling on your lips. There was an edge to Kai's voice, as if he had just returned from an unseen battle between life and death. He looked normal, yet the way he forced out a small laugh made you cringe.
"I'm going inside, think I might shower." he abruptly announced. "Don't train too hard or you might bake in the sun!" You watched as he fiddled with the strap on his sheath, twiddling it and running it between his fingers. He caught your stare and flashed a fleeting smile your way, yet it didn't feel genuine. "Kai--"
He pretended not to hear you and rushed through the temple doors. Your frown deepened. "He looks upset." Jay rested his cheek in his hand with a snort. "I'll say. He looked like he was thinking hard about something."
"But what?" Cole inquired with a sigh. "Nothing's been happening around Ninjago, shouldn't he be happy about it? He can play video games all he wants now, or, I don't know, talk to Skylor on the phone? Morro's gone and Lloyd's fine now." Zane raised doubtful brow. He took a seat by Jay and leaned his head back against one of the supporting beams. It was an odd sight to see everyone so deeply in thought again, especially since none of you should have been deeply in thought in the first place.
"Lloyd has not fully recovered." Zane notes. "He suffers from mental trauma and is regaining his strength as we speak." Nya hummed in agreement. She set her weapon down with a thoughtful nod and leaned against a supporting beam. "I don't know about you, but he seemed kind of sad. Why don't you talk to him (Y/n)?"
"Yeah, you're his girlfriend so you guys share a special connection." piped up Jay. You cam't deny that. Your relationship with Kai was special, so he told you certain things no one else had ever known about him. Whether it be about his past, or even what he dreams for the future, you knew it all.
Well except this.
You stood up, ignoring the low cracks from your aching body. "I'll be back." You pulled open the temple's doors, gently shutting it behind you as you surveyed the vast room. The main hall was empty, save for Sensei Wu who sat at a table drinking tea. He turned to you, eyeing your troubled expression knowingly. "Kai is in his room." he simply stated. You smiled at him gratefully. "Thank you Sensei."
You sprinted up the stairs, caring not if you skipped the creaky steps or walked right over them. It was quite tranquil in the halls of the quiet temple, yet somehow, it made you uncomfortable. "Kai?" You stopped in front of his door. "Kai--"
Sniffling. That was the first thing that caught your ears. Your fingers paused on the door handle, slipping past the cool metal as you continued to listen to the sounds. You knew what crying sounded like, but this? It was earth-shattering. The way he cried sounded exactly like raw agony. It was painful to listen to, yet you couldn't bring yourself to walk away.
If Kai was suffering, you had to be there for him like all the times he had been there for you, or Lloyd, or Nya and Jay and Zane and Cole.
Your fingers wrapped around the door handle. You gently knocked and peeked inside. He sat on his bed with his back facing you. His katana lay on the floor instead of of by his bed or next to his pillow like he usially did.
"Kai?" Your voice came out as a gentle whisper. "Are you okay?" His crying ceased so quickly that if you hadn't been standing outside listening, you would have thought everythimg were your imagination.
"Yeah." he steadily said. "I'm okay. I just needed to take a break after that spar. It got really intense." He laughed. It wasn't a happy one. If you knew what it felt like to have your organs ripped out, you'd describe it as listening to Kai fake his laugh and fake his happiness. He put on a brave face for the world, and perhaps that was because he knew people relied on him to step up when Lloyd couldn't.
You opened the door a little wider and let yourself in, softly closing it behind. "If something's wrong Kai, you can tell me." He sniffled quietly. "No, I'm fine." He laughed; you didn't miss the quiver in his voice. "I'm just a little tired."
"No, it's something else. I won't judge you, promise."
Kai sniffled and grabbed a tissue from his nightstand. He blew his nose with a shaky breath and tossed the tissue in the bin. For a good minute, he sat there in silence, slowing inhaling and exhaling rattling breaths. You made your way over to him and took a seat at the edge of his bed. He kept his back towards you as he sniffled some more, so you sat there, watching his shoulders quiver.
Slowly, Kai entertwined his hand with yours. He gave it a good squeeze, as if reassuring himself you were still there. You didn't want to say anything to him yet. If you did, you were sure it would break his already fragile tranquility. Thankfully, he made the first move.
"I know you wouldn't leave me," he began, "but sometimes I can't help worrying. What if we go on a mission and none of us make it back? Lloyd almost died, Cole's a ghost.... What if something happens to you? Or--or Nya and Jay or Zane?" He let out a rattling breath that spoke of all the battles you both endured. It was hard to believe you both survived every single one of them.
"Kai, we've lived this long." you said. "Why not longer? And even if one of us does die, life will go on. It always does in Ninjago, and it blooms again into something new." You squeezed his hand. "You're thinking about your parents too."
The quiet Kai stayed in was enough of an answer.
"I understand it hurts. You know, my parents died when I was very little. I don't remember how they looked like, but I remember what I felt. They made me so happy. It was short, but I found it again in you and the others. Even if something disappears, it's never truly lost." You smiled even though Kai would never see it. "Lloyd's still here because you saved him. None of us are going anywhere for as long as we can help it."
Kai's shoulders slumped. A sigh left his lips and he finally turned to face you. What strikes you the most about him isn't the puffiness under his eyes, or the bags and crinkle in his brow--it's the life that's been sucked out of his expression. His eyes were hollow, as if someone had completely wiped the emotion of happiness from existence. The deep frown tugging at his lips is even worse. It's thin, tight, and quivering.
"I-I'm sorry..."
You placed a hand on his cheek. "Kai." It's all you can muster, a name, a look of sorrow, and worry. Howw had you not seen this? How had you missed something so plainly put?
You gently pulled him closer, wrapping your arms around his warm body as the rain fell from his eyes. "You have nothing to be sorry for. If anyone should be sorry, it's me. I should be there for you, but I didn't notice. I love you though and I'm here now." you gently whispered.
"You're not alone Kai. You don't have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. We're all here for you and no one is leaving." His cries started out soft, but with each word that left your mouth, his whimpers grew, gaining and gaining in volume until a heart-wrenching sob ripped through his throat.
Tears gathered in your eyea and you allowed yourself to cry with him. It hurt to think about losing anyone, it hurt to see your boyfriend so battered, so beaten and defeated. What cure could you offer to remedy his pain you shared?
There was no answer to that. And so you sat there, keeping your arms tight around each other as if either of you would disappear. Right now, it was sink or swim. You had to fight the ache and push forward, even if it felt like you were both drowning.
Please don't forget to reblog so this can reach more people! Thank you all for reading!

kiki, since you're latina, what do you think of south terano as a character? do you think wakui wrote him as a good representation? i was thinking this week, rereading his fight with senju arc and honestly: i think wakui only created south as a character to be wasted
hmmm, here we go. i'll not speak as a latina, but as a Brazilian cut because it's impossible to say that South is a good representation for all latin american countries, since the issue of violence (which is south's central foundation) affects all countries in this part of the world in different ways, in different layers and with different intensities.
first of all: we need to understand that the South's story makes sense in some points, especially if we are talking about Rio de Janeiro.
In most favelas in Brazil, we obviously have THOUSANDS of children that suffer daily from violence and its ramifications, especially because, for example: almost every week we have different news of gunfire exchanges between the police and Rio's criminal factions that leave, most of the time, wounded that vary in age.
And when I say that South's story makes sense in some points, I mean that: considering that Dino (the man who took care of South when he was younger) was possibly a guy involved in crime for a long time, it makes sense that Terano had him as a kind of "role model", since it is not uncommon that kids growing up in Brazilian favelas end up becoming people involved in the criminal world, but this is not a rule, nor an exception: it is a reality.
When I read South's story in the Three Deities arc, I was analyzing a lot of things because I was kind of euphoric when i saw a BR character in Tokyo Revengers, but I confess that I didn't expect him to be so "bad" (?, I am not sure if this is the word to use here because, let's be concise: if South had not grown up in a violent environment, he would never be the guy he became, this is basic psychology).
Now the question is: Is South a good representation?
Yes and No.
Yes, because I don't think Wakui has represented Rio de Janeiro in a terrible way, but in a cruel truthful way. Do we have good things in Rio de Janeiro? Obviously, without a shadow of a doubt, it's no wonder that Rio de Janeiro is one of the most beautiful cities/states in Brazil, but the fact is: even within the country, Rio is known as an extremely violent state, and it's no use saying that Wakui was wrong to portray South as a child growing up in a violent environment stereotyping Rio de Janeiro because the truth is:
South would have become violent being in any other city that was also a violent center. It could be in Brazil, it could be in Germany, it could be in Argentina, it could even be in the United States: the order of the facts does not change the outcome.
And the other answer (No):
No, because I still believe that Wakui wasted him: in that, I agree with you. And, furthermore, I also believe that Wakui could have used at least 3 more chapters to develop South better because, seriously, he was the only character, with the exception of Manjiro, who had a dark impulse and it is comical how Mikey killed him because HELL, Terano had so much potential, even if I am not his biggest fan I have to admit it!
Besides all this, I'd like to point out that: I don't think South is the worst Brazilian character that exists in the world of manga/anime 'cause one thing is true: in Rio de Janeiro, we have two extremely distinct realities. And Wakui used the one that was pertinent to the arc of the manga in question.
Life on the beachfront of Rio and life in the 'morros' (favelas) are two cultural and social geographic extremes. In Rio, we literally have Gávea and Baixada Fluminense just a short distance from each other. We literally have Leblon and Complexo do Alemão in the same city, and this is insane, to say the least. In Brazil we have islands of wealth amidst an ocean of poverty (and this applies not only to Rio de Janeiro, but also to other states such as São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Ceará), so South is a character that does justice to the environment in which he grew up.

Ninjobservation #2
Analyzing the Elemental Alliance as a group and uncovering the real reason the Time twins (Twims for short) were "traitors"
So I have rewatched Hands of Time for the 3rd time this past year and Me and my sister Purplefern (She has a ton of good Twims fics on Ao3 ^^) have learned a lot about the old elemental alliance (EA).
THE CLAIM
The EA were a strong clique that did not appreciate the Twim's general attitudes and personalities. Chen saw the growing discourse and manipulated both sides into turning on each other.
[[They be judgin' (””art”” by me) ]]
To start let’s look at all the Leaders of this Alliance
Wu
Wu back before his eventual growth with the ninja was a strict teacher. Morro ran away due to his inability to understand his problems (problems he may have caused with his teachings). He is generally harsh towards the Ninja in season 1, forcing them to train all day because they simply talked during his lesson ("Never trust a snake").
Due to being the son of the FSM he put pressure on himself to always be virtuous and leaderlike (believes he has to uphold order) and he takes this believed expectation of authority to heart. He is no nonsense, yelling at Libber (the Master of Lightning) for simply talking slightly off topic before an important battle. He has a strong sense of right and wrong, according to his own moral standards and does not waver on what he believes is in/appropriate.
Garmadon
Although less righteous than Wu, joining the alliance after the war began, he has also been seen as a strict and serious teacher. Because of the growing venom in his blood I'd argue he was even more strict, less in attitude but more in general rules of law and order. We see in Rebooted that Garmadon set strict rules for himself like "no weapons" to keep his destructive side in check and we know that Young Garmadon is so sensitive to rules as he claims that even reading another's mail is a crime. He joined as a leader and most likely upheld rules not just for the alliance but for his own sake.
Ray and Maya
We see little of them but they are both good friends- and Ray appears to be the right hand man-- of Wu They are such good friends that Ray is the one trusted with the Map to the Golden Weapons. From his tone and diction he seems very dogmatic and if he's anything like Kai, he's quick to assumptions and to attack people who he perceives as bad according to his own strict principles. He just feels like a stuffy guy. I don't have much on Maya but she's a good people person so she gets along with the others really well. Also she married Ray, so that has to say something. They both went along with the Time Blade plan.
Other Elemental observations
Except for Libber (Lighting), all the Masters are older than the Time twins. (Krux can fight in S7 so he's not older than 70. They are most likely mid to late twenty's during the war)
The EA is a pre-established group (Garmadon refers to them like they are a pre-existing entity in ToE flashbacks). They were two confident and arrogent twenty year olds strolling into a pre-established clique of old honorable fighters during a war. Not the best time for bonding.
Ice feels very much like Wu and Garmadon, considering he gave his powers to an analytical robot like Zane is saying a lot about him. He most likely does not tolerate "shenanigans", especially during a war.
They battle in a tight group
Krux and Acronix
These two act like they don't belong in the group. During the party celebrating the end of the war they are seen standing away from the rest and are genuinely happy to be recognized by Wu for their efforts. Although retcon, the two are not seen battling with the rest of the group. They instead most likely are so powerful (and impulsive and difficult to work with) that they are sent on duo missions to protect villages (They are also not the best followers).
It's also a nice parallel to our ninja in ToE. They stuck together like a family and were disliked and excluded from the rest of the EM's. The same could be said for The Twims since they always fought together and were similarly excluded.
Krux
Krux is a planner and a sassy dude. He’s stubborn and will tell people they are wrong to their face. The 16 personalities that matches him best is INTJ (the Architect). This analytical type hates people who are who they consider idiotic, do not participate in formalities, and are aggravated by heavy rules and restrictions made by someone else, especially someone they do not respect (which is most people).
Although we do not see him much as a young man we know that he is prone to grudges and will resort to less kind methods in sake for the means to an end. Definitely not someone Wu and Garmadon would like since they are trying to uphold order and keep a chain of command. But Krux believes in his own plans and his own chain of command. He is not good at small talk and would mostly stick with his brother during group events like meetings and parties, so in general his terrible social skills probably made him pretty unliked.
Acronix
Acronix is quick witted and heavily proud of himself. He won’t admit he is wrong and is very loud in general. This may be a side tangent but Acronix may have ADHD, which would not be understood back in the day and people would regard him as annoying or rude.
EVIDENCE FOR ADHD
-He is shown to stand in a position that suggests hand fidgeting (A LOT)
-Quick to anger over minuscule details
-yeah he's distractible but he's also quick to move through ideas/activities
-impulsive
- During their important battle back in time his attention is on the pretty fusion dragon flying around instead of listening to Kruxs plan of attack.
-His attention shifts to the destiny's bounty and he toys with the ninja despite saying right before he couldn't stay and fight Wu cause he had to meet up with Krux.
- in general he is constantly shifting from idea to idea, oftentimes leaving his original plans completely un-finished
He could have trouble paying attention to meetings and with his bond with Krux and tendency to quick action he would choose his brother's plan and strike independently rather than following whatever Wu is doing. This leads them to fight beside each other alone instead of with the main group, making the elemental alliance think they believe to be better than them.
In terms of Personality types he’s a hardcore ESTP (Entrepreneur). Like his brother, they are free analytical thinkers who do not respect higher authority simply because they claim to be the leaders and hate rules and regulations getting in the way of their progress. He says what's on his minds regardless of feelings and will defend his opinions despite others sensitivities. He is perceptive enough to pick up on small changes and habits but he is quick to share that knowledge (usually in a snarky remark). I doubt the alliance appreciates what he has to say when he’s blabbering about everything in such a rude tone.
MOE
Now this all may start to look like a silly “Hands of time did nothing wrong” theory. But there is a key factor in this that not many people talk about. The previous Master of Earth (or Moe for short).
We know that Chen manipulated Moe into turning against the alliance so it was not technically his fault. Chen could’ve said that because the serpentine rose from the earth he was entitled to fight for them. Heck he could’ve been 100% hypnotized by Clouse’s dark magic (His eyes were not swirly so it was not hypnobrai like is suggested in WOTD). He is most likely some lovable dummy who was easily swayed and a kind person to apologize once the truth about Chen is revealed (considering that he’s Cole’s grandfather). Moe as a person is fine. What is sketchy is Moe being easily forgiven and allowed into the alliance despite turning on all of HUMANITY. What he did could’ve hurt way more people. He fought with the snakes and attacked innocent people and powerless soldiers (like the rice farmers) and was off scott free! The Twims only fought the elemental alliance and Wu and Garmadon at the monastery. Not nearly as destructive.
They figured out that Chen made the alliance turn on each other after the war and forgave Moe for that, but isn't it strange that they never gave the Time Twins that same benefit of the doubt? We know from “Way of the departed” and general logic that Chen and Clouse helped tip them over the edge. Whether you believe this to be canon or not is irrelevant because if the EA knew that Chen was involved once why would they not assume he was with the time twins too? Seems like they already disliked the two and were just ready for a reason to punish them. All flashbacks we get are told from unreliable sources like Wu and Ray (who both were enthusiastically the ones planning to strip them of their powers.) Speaking of, let’s analyze this example of their “betrayal” shall we?
THE BATTLE IN QUESTION
This is the flashback we get of them fighting against the alliance. The first time you watch it all you really know is that they are fighting against the EA, when Wu is describing their arrogance and the danger of their powers. How evil right? To attack their companions like that? But there is a lot wrong with how Wu phrases the fight and how it actually goes down.
They have Bamboo staffs.
A weapon that is primarily defensive and not a good weapon of choice for a planned ambush or assault. They are non lethal weapons. And Acronix is said on LEGO.com to be quick to learn any weapon so someone as adaptable as he is would not intentionally bring something so weak to a fight unless he had been forced to improvise.
Always on the defensive.
Someone as tactical as Krux and skilled as Acronix would never let themselves be on the defensive like this if they had the first blow. We see that Ray has the first attack in the flashback. Although Acronix is known to jump in without thinking he has his brother who would not just go into a fight just to lose. And even if they did end up on the defensive after having the first strike Acronix has his powers. He would’ve brought both of them out of a situation if things got too hard (which he is known to do in battles HE starts). But they clearly did not start this battle.
They are surrounded.
These two guys with nothing but staffs are encircled? Krux as a planner and Acronix as a quick witted warrior would never let themsleves get into that position if it had been a battle that they had started and had been planning to win. This framing makes it feel like they are being ganged up on.
In a remote location.
The battle takes place on a gravel road no where near a major city. If they wanted to take over wouldn’t they strike somewhere more populated? And if they were attacking the EA...they would have attacked the EA directly. They were probably just walking and talking and got ambushed.
Chen?
Very possible that Chen sent an “anonymous” note to the EA telling them of the Twims plans to attack. They are arrogant, have openly hated Wu’s leadership, and don’t gel with the group so of course they would take a tip like that and attack someone they don’t like. It’s possible they had ideas of taking over the EA but the world seems a bit out of their morality range until provoked.
Now that they have been attacked the two form a real plan to overthrow these fools who don’t like them and have unfairly attacked them (just like Chen had been telling them they were likely to do). They bring real weapons (swords) to an important location (the Monastery) to fight the specific people they do not like (Wu and Garmadon).
The Punishment
Ok so these powerful elemental masters are going to attack the EA. They were once allies and they are too powerful to defeat with their powers. If only there was a way to temporarily suspend their powers so they could talk this out and have an understanding of each other and perhaps uncover Master Chen's involvement-- since the Hands of Time were semi-sensible war heroes who were the sons of a previous master of time who presumably responsibly used the element without issue (and was most likely a samurai since Krux says their helmets are samurai helmets)... sigh too bad there is not such a material… oh wait.
WHAT ABOUT VENGESTONE???
These fools really decided that destroying an important element forever, and violently ripping it out of its users was the only option? There were generations of time elementals before them that had the element. They could throw vengestone nets at them or fight until they get knocked out and then vengestone cage them. But they don’t want to know why they betrayed the alliance. It was not because the element was too dangerous. It was not because they had to strip them of their powers (cause there are less lethal ways of doing so). They just did not give these two any mercy.
CONCLUSION
The Time twins are hard to work with and stuck together no matter what. The alliance is very strict and dogmatic which both Krux and Acronix would hate being trapped in their day to day alliance meetings and group mentality. Chen used their egos and their exclusion to his benefit to keep the fight going after he was banished and sent a letter to start up conflict with the EA. The EA did not like the Twims so they were ruthless and did not give them the same mercy they did for Moe (They also are not Elements of Creation. Wu would do anything to protect the main 4 but he’ll punish these punks).

the idiots’ guide to not despising your cousin
Determined to make the best out of the worst hand, Lloyd drags his newly-living pseudo-cousin on the road trip from hell in a desperate attempt to bond. Or get rid of each other for good, they’re not sure yet.
(This requires...a tiny bit of background, part one being that a while back i received a request for “more lloyd and sharks”. Except i misread it as “morro lloyd and sharks” which was like, odd, but i went with it and somehow ended up with 12K words of...this fic, that’s definitely 90% crack. Which brings me to part two, which is that this takes place in an entirely hypothetical au where Morro made it through the rift in s7, or somehow he’s alive the details aren’t important shh)
In his defense, Morro never would have been caught dead in this situation if he hadn’t traumatized his sort-of-cousin by possessing him two years earlier.
…alright, that’s not really a defense, but it’s the only explanation he has.
“I’m just saying,” Lloyd is…saying, as he jabs his pointer finger at him. “I could’ve been a whole foot taller if you hadn’t starved me. You stunted my growth, listening to me for five minutes is the least you can do.”
“I did not stunt your growth, you were already going to be a shrimp anyways,” Morro counters, rubbing his right eye as he tries to focus on his book instead.
Lloyd’s eyes narrow. “A whole week. And all you let me eat was half a slice of bread and vodka shots.”
“Would you — shh, it was not vodka!” Morro hisses, his eyes darting wildly around for Wu. His shoulders slump in relief as he confirms that he and Lloyd are still the only ones in the room, and he turns back, glaring at Lloyd. “I told you, it was juice.”
Lloyd glares right back. “I could still taste, you know. I’m not that naïve.”
“Could’ve fooled me,” Morro quips.
Lloyd’s green eyes flash a little too much on the neon side, and Morro backs down. “Alright, alright!” He shakes his head. “I’ll listen to whatever kiddie drama you want.”
“It’s not drama,” Lloyd huffs, flopping down on the couch across from him. “It’s a proposal.”
Morro sneers. “Oh, a fancy word.”
Again, Lloyd sneers right back. “Yeah, do you need a dictionary for it?"
In retrospect, it’s probably a good thing Morro possessed Lloyd at that particular point in his life. If he’d had to deal with this Lloyd, and all his newly-found confidence and sass, he’d have dropped him off a cliff much sooner.
“Listen here, you little punk—”
“Oh, now you want me to listen to you,” Lloyd interrupts. “Spoken like a true raging hypocrite.”
“FSM, what do you want?” Morro finally cracks, tossing his book on the couch beside him. It’s clear he’s not going to be getting anymore reading done until Lloyd leaves.
Lloyd beams, looking infuriatingly pleased with himself. “Again, I have a proposal,” he says. “For you.”
Morro already hates this. “No.”
Lloyd continues as if Morro hadn’t spoken. “You should go with me to the coast this weekend.”
“No.”
“The southern coast, so the one like eight hours away.”
“No, what the—” Morro stares at him incredulously. “Why in the world would I ever want to do that?”
Lloyd simply shrugs, as if he hasn’t just suggested the idea from hell. “Because.”
Morro’s going to kill him, tentatively-redeemed status be damned.
“Why, Lloyd.”
Lloyd gets a look in his eyes, the kind that makes Morro shift. “Consider,” he says. “A tornado.”
Morro, unfortunately, does consider that. “There is...merit, to the idea,” he admits, even if doing so pains him.
“Okay, okay,” Lloyd continues, like an enthusiastic salesman with a quota to meet. “Now, consider this: sharks. In the tornado.”
Morro loses any and all faith he’s ever had in Lloyd, which is impressive considering there was nothing there to begin with. “What.”
“Sharks, in the tornado. Like a sharknado.”
Something flickers in the back of Morro’s brain, snatches of a conversation he’d heard from the living room one evening, along with a lot of screeching laughter and pained groans.
“Are you trying to reenact an entirely fictional and entirely garbage movie,” Morro says flatly, mentally crediting Cole for that particular phrasing.
Lloyd’s lip juts out. “No.”
“That’s exactly what it is, isn’t it,” Morro rolls his eyes. “No. Find someone else to be stupid with you. Kai should be down, he always is.”
Lloyd narrows his eyes, but he doesn’t take the bait. “Will you just — at least hear my final point,” he pleads.
Morro stares into the vast abyss of the ceiling panels, and already regrets answering. “What.”
“The look on the others’ faces.”
Morro pauses again, desperately trying to stop himself — but it’s too late. The looks have been imagined.
Lloyd grins, sharp teeth poking out at the edge of his lip. “Now — the look on Uncle Wu’a face.”
Oh, curse everything. Morro’s coming dangerously close to being made a fool by an idiot shrimp who calls himself his cousin. He quickly backtracks.
“Noted, but that doesn’t explain why you’re asking me.”
“Because you’ve got the wind power for the tornado, duh.” Lloyd makes a face. “Also because the others will probably say something like it’s too dangerous, or a high risk, or some other nonsense like that.”
Morro highly doubts that Jay, or even Kai, of all people, would turn down the opportunity for such potent idiocy, but he does believe they’d tie Lloyd to a pole to keep him from rushing a shark.
“So you’re asking me, out of everyone else in this realm, to drive eight hours — eight — with you to some coast in the middle of nowhere — which includes water, by the way, so that’s already a strike — just so you can recreate some awful B-movie scene?”
“Yup,” Lloyd says. “And maybe drop the whole thing on my dad’s head, if we can find him.”
“Right,” Morro sighs. “Just being clear.”
He drops his head back, staring at the ceiling again. It’s the idea from hell, for certain. Morro would hate himself every minute of it, if he were to agree.
But the idea of hitting the road — of escaping the monastery — does sound tempting.
It has, admittedly, been rather boring at the monastery. Morro’s interactions with the ninja, while not as aggressive as they’d been originally, tend to be strained at best. On the better days, Morro finds the most entertainment in listening to the increasingly creative ways Kai threatens to end his existence with, should he either step out of line, or within a set boundary around Lloyd. Both of which Morro threatens to break by going along with Lloyd’s plan.
Actually, Morro muses, that’s more of a reason to go than to not. Kai’s head might potentially explode if he were to wake up and discover Morro had taken off across country with Lloyd, and Morro would get the added bonus of seeing him chew Lloyd out for being the one to suggest it. So there are definitely pros.
None of them, of course, override the fact that he’d be spending eight hours, in a car, with Lloyd and Lloyd alone. Both ways.
“Eight hours is a long time,” Morro finally says.
Lloyd’s expression drops, before his eyebrows crease stubbornly. “It’s eight hours you wouldn’t spend being hounded by Uncle Wu to train with us.”
Morro cringes. Lloyd has clearly prepared his arguments for this one with devastating accuracy. But still, eight hours. With Lloyd—
“If you do this, I’ll stop tying all your shirtsleeves together when they’re in the laundry,” Lloyd adds.
“That was you?!” Morro exclaims, indignantly. “Nya told me the dryer did that on its own!”
“Yeah, sorry about that,” Lloyd shrugs. “You probably…shouldn’t take Nya’s word on a whole lot of stuff any time soon.”
“Now you tell me,” Morro mutters, sinking further into the couch and bemoaning the universe on the whole.
Lloyd scoots forward on his own couch, his eyes wide and pleading. “Please?” he says. “It’s just this once. Then I’ll leave you alone, I promise.”
Morro meets his eyes shrewdly, chewing on his cheek. He’ll regret it, for certain. Probably hate himself and the universe on the whole the entire weekend. But…he does, rather drastically, owe Lloyd. And he is trying to — ugh — make things right with him.
(As if that’s something that can be done.)
And at least there’s the promise of Lloyd leaving him alone.
Morro lets out a long, weary groan, pressing the heels of his hands into his eyes. “Fine,” he grumbles. “But you’re paying for gas.”
Lloyd gives a whoop of victory, before desperately trying to stifle his excitement. “You pay for stuff?” he cackles instead. “Lamest villain ever.”
“Get out,” Morro snarls, hurling his book at him. Lloyd dodges with ease. “Before I change my mind and murder you.”
***********
Lloyd secures a vehicle with a speed and easiness that almost makes Morro doubt which one of them is the reformed criminal. Then he remembers that, technically, they’re both reformed criminals, even if Morro’s ‘reformed’ status is still under hot debate (by himself included).
As it also turns out, Lloyd happens to have a not-so-reformed criminal friend as well, who Morro unfortunately recognizes when he hands the keys over to them.
Ronin abruptly cuts off in his lecture to Lloyd about engine safety as he spots him, his face paling. Morro pauses mid-step, mentally wishing he’d just made Lloyd carry the six packages of Oreos out to the car himself. Lloyd simply smiles, like the oblivious airhead Morro wishes he truly was.
He’s not, though, because the look in his eyes says he’s having the time of his life with this.
“Oh yeah, I forgot to mention,” Lloyd tells Ronin easily. “Morro’s the other person I was talking about.”
Ronin stares between the two of them, and looks as if he’s lost about five years of his life. “How hard do they hit your head in practice, kid.”
“Not hard enough, apparently,” Morro mutters. Ronin pins him with a glare, and despite his better judgement, Morro shuts up.
“It’s all good,” Lloyd assures him. “I know what I’m doing.”
“For some reason, I got trouble believin’ you, kid.”
“Well, you shouldn’t,” Lloyd huffs, snatching the keys from him. “I’m the Green Ninja. Also, if you tell the others about this I’ll start busting your Thursday night runs.”
Ronin’s expression sours. “Alright, alright, if you wanna go on a suicide road trip, go on a suicide road trip. Just keep me outta it.”
“Gladly,” Morro grouses, shouldering his way between them so he can dump the cursed cookies in the van already.
Ronin watches him through narrowed eyes, and makes a threatening gesture. “If you even try and come back alone…”
“He won’t,” Lloyd says, before Morro can reply. “Promise. I have it all under control.”
“That’s what you all say every time,” Ronin grumbles.
Ronin finally leaves them in peace, muttering something about ‘leaving his Thursday nights alone' before taking off. This leaves Lloyd and Morro and the incredibly hideous minivan, alone. They look at each other. There’s a moment of silence, before they both scramble wildly for the driver’s seat. Morro beats Lloyd out by a half-second, grabbing the steering wheel and shoving him back with a smug smirk. Lloyd glares at him.
“I’m driving,” he demands.
“As if you’re old enough to have your license,” Morro scoffs.
Lloyd narrows his eyes into slits. “At least I was born when cars actually existed.”
“Ooh, I’m old, how will I ever recover,” Morro mocks. “I got here first, I’m driving. Suck it up.”
Lloyd’s face screws up, and for a half-second Morro gleefully thinks he’s about to pout like a child.
To his disappointment, Lloyd blows his breath out, stands up straighter, and plays dirty.
“You take control of the car, you take control of my body, ” he shakes his head, crossing his arms. “I guess that’s just how it is with you, huh."
Morro’s hands grind where he clutches the steering wheel, and he resists the urge to smash his head against it. “Have you ever heard of abusing your power.”
“Have you ever heard of abusing me.”
“Oh for FSM’s — you can drive, fine!”
***********
They’re roughly an hour out from the monastery, when something strikes Morro as odd.
“By the way,” he says. “How did you convince the idiot quartet to let you go?”
“Don’t call them that,” Lloyd says sternly, glaring at him. “And, uh, I didn’t.”
Morro blinks. Then Lloyd’s meaning sinks in, and he lets out a long, pained exhale. “You do realize,” he says. “That they’re going to have multiple heart attacks, then hunt me down and murder me as prime suspect, right.”
“Oh, don’t worry,” Lloyd assures him, cheerfully. “I left them a note.”
***********
Kai stares at the slightly-crumpled scrap of paper in his hands and wishes, not for the first time, that Garmadon or Wu or Misako had put in just a little more time in raising Lloyd, so he could blame them for this and not his own example.
Alas, Kai is only able to bury himself in so much denial.
“What’s that?” Cole asks, striding into the kitchen behind him. Kai hands him the note, wordlessly. Cole frowns as he takes it, trying in vain to flatten the edges.
“‘Hey guys, heading out with Morro for a couple days, going to’— something something…sharks?” Cole blinks at the note. “Geez, might need to look into Lloyd’s writing education agai— wait, he’s heading out with who for a couple what.”
“Read the rest,” Kai says, his eyes glazing over as he stares across the kitchen.
“Okay, uh… ‘—taking the van’— we have a van? — ‘shouldn’t go too far, don’t worry.’” Cole’s eyebrows shoot up as he reads on. “‘Also my phone’s dead and I forgot the charger. Sorry.’ He wrote this while he was still here, he could’ve grabbed it!” he exclaims.
“I’m going to slaughter him,” Kai states.
“Uh…which one?”
“Whichever one doesn’t run fast enough.”
***********
As it turns out, Lloyd’s plan consists of a little more than just driving six hours to some random beach in the middle of nowhere. This is unsurprising, as Morro’s been expecting Lloyd to spring nonsense on him at any given moment.
Having lived in his head for a brief stint, Morro also finds it unsurprising that Lloyd’s plan isn’t actually a plan.
“So the tornado thing is easy, obviously, unless your powers suck,” he’s saying. Morro shoots him a look he hopes conveys the depths of his annoyance from where he’s at the wheel. Lloyd switched with him back at the last gas station, having grown fed up with Morro’s lack of skill in reading maps.
It’s not Morro’s fault his reading comprehension rests around that of a nine year-old’s. Like Lloyd’s any better.
“Gonna take that as a ‘maybe’,” Lloyd mutters to himself, squinting back at the map under the above-head car light. “It’s the shark part that’s going to be a little more tricky.”
“I hear they like blood,” Morro says. “I can always skewer you a little, then toss you in. That should do it.”
“Har har,” Lloyd replies, drenched in sarcasm. “That’s obviously not the route we’re taking. Besides, it’d be mean to lure the sharks out and not actually have anything they can eat. I’d probably end up poisoning them or something, with my mutant Oni blood.”
Morro stares at him long enough to nearly run them off the road. He jerks the car back on track just in time, shaking his head and despairing.
“I was thinking, since there’s already an elemental master of nature, maybe there’s like, an elemental master of animals?” Lloyd continues. “Then we could ask them to help us out.”
“Oh, I’m sure some random master would love to help us out,” Morro drawls. “An undead criminal who tried to unleash hell on the country and the son of Lord Garmadon.”
“Speak for yourself,” Lloyd huffs. “People actually like me.”
“Shocker.”
Lloyd ignores him. “Plus, you’re not even undead anymore,” he mutters under his breath. “You’re just regular boring alive, now.”
Morro opens his mouth, because he’s got a lot to say about that, then realizes he doesn’t quite have the words for it, aside from hanging his mouth open like an indignant fish. He shuts it, and Lloyd plows on.
“Do you think we should look for the master of like, fish or something, instead?” he questions, frowning. “I mean, I don’t even know if there is a master of animals, but if there is, sharks are technically fish, and fish are…well, I guess they’re animals too, but what if there’s like, a distinction, and all the hypothetical master of animals can summon are mammals, and we drive out of the way for nothing?”
“I will pay you,” Morro says, pinching the bridge of his nose tightly. “I will pay you so much to shut up.”
“It’s too much of a risk,” Lloyd decides, ignoring him. “Plan B it is, then.”
Morro doesn’t want to ask. That would be inviting Lloyd to run his mouth again, and Morro doesn’t hate himself that much.
But he does, regretfully, want to know how he’ll be meeting his fate.
“What’s plan B?”
“So there’s this park,” Lloyd says. “For performing animals.”
***********
Morro and Lloyd are still arguing by the time they pull into the motel parking lot for the night. That had been a different argument altogether, but as they’d had to sneak out around midnight to get on the road successfully, neither had really wanted to keep driving through the early morning hours.
“—no, no, I cannot make this clearer, no,” Morro growls. “I am not breaking into some — some stupid amusement park, just to steal their dancing sharks or whatever.”
“Oh come on, it’s stealing! That’s like, your favorite pastime,” Lloyd shoots back. “A shark is nothing compared to body-snatching.”
“That’s not going to work on me again,” Morro seethes.
“Oh yeah?” Lloyd taunts. “Why not? Did your morality meter run out?”
“My what—”
“I can never dye my hair black because of you,” Lloyd continues, eyes narrowed. “I will never know the teenage joys of horrifying your family by dyeing your entire head jet black, because of you.”
“It didn’t look that bad,” Morro defends.
“I’m talking about the trauma!” Lloyd snaps.
Morro pauses. “Your trauma, or theirs?”
Lloyd opens his mouth, then frowns. “Min—their— both, both traumas!”
While Morro wants to scoff back that having to endure the sight of Kai’s hair is equally traumatic for him, he also recognizes that Lloyd has a point. Which is inconvenient, because Lloyd’s beginning to use that point against him a little too well lately, but considering Lloyd also still wakes up screaming in the night because Morro’s given him chronic nightmares, he decides not to push back against that point.
Because he’s a nice person, like that.
He does, however, attempt to push for sense.
“Stealing a shark from a theme park is still theft,” he argues under his breath, as they make their way toward the motel check-in. “Isn’t that something you’re against?”
“Theft, yes,” Lloyd replies. “Freeing wrongfully imprisoned sharks from slavery, less so.”
“Oh, so stealing is an act of philanthropy when it’s you.”
“Wow, look at you, breaking out the big words.” Lloyd’s teeth grind together.
“Yeah, you need a dictionary?” Morro sneers back his words from earlier.
Lloyd looks as if he’d like to throttle him, but fortunately for Morro — or unfortunately, as he’d like to see him try — the receptionist at the check-in desk is staring at them with wide eyes now.
To be fair, Morro imagines they make quite a contrasting pair: Lloyd with his light hair in his green hoodie and green high top sneakers, and Morro with his black hair in his black shirt and black jacket and black jeans and black high top sneakers.
At least Lloyd’s basketball shorts are like, a grey color. For contrast, not that Morro cares.
He does care that they’re both wearing high top sneakers, but that’s only because it’s annoying.
Lloyd finally straightens, transforming instantaneously into a bright, innocent-eyed ray of infuriating sunshine. “Hi!” he greets. “Can we get a room for two, please?”
“Oh,” the lady blinks, clearly blinded by the intensity of Lloyd’s beaming smile. “Of course, sweetheart, one moment.”
Morro fights back the urge to inform the receptionist that Lloyd is actually a half-demon monster who could and would drag her on an eight-hour road trip from hell, with the sole purpose of stealing sharks.
He resists, though. Since he’s a nice person, like that.
The receptionist hands them the keys with ease, but it’s only as Lloyd struggles to get the room door open that the reality of their situation hits Morro.
Lloyd finally swings the door open, and Morro stares in horror at the small room. “Wait, we’re sharing a room?”
“Uh, yeah?” Lloyd shrugs. “Unless you’ve got the money for two, ‘cause I definitely don’t.”
Morro’s jaw creaks. Lloyd knows full well he has about three cents to his name. “Tell me there’s two beds.”
Lloyd scoffs loudly. “Please. I’m not completely insane.”
Morro would beg to differ, because he’s got them sharing a room, but he’s true to his word, at least. While the room is about the size of a glorified closet, there are two single beds, neatly arranged side by side. In silent agreement, the first thing Lloyd and Morro do, after tossing their bags down, is shove the beds as far as they can from each other against the opposite wall. The bedside table relocates nicely as a barrier in the no-man’s zone between the two. Morro would prefer, say, a five-feet thick vengestone wall between the two of them, but sure, the bedside table thing works.
They make camp on their respective beds after that, Morro skimming idly through his book while Lloyd flips through the little leaflet on the bedside table. He frowns, swinging his legs at the edge of his bed.
“D’you think we should just order dinner in?” he says.
Morro ignores him, continuing to thumb through his book. He hasn’t been particularly hungry since they finished an entire package of Oreos somewhere around the second hour in.
Not one to be discouraged, Lloyd continues anyways, mumbling to himself. “It’s a little late, but it looks like there are some pizza places that’ll deliver here…”
Morro frowns. “Pizza’s that cheese bread stuff, right?”
Lloyd goes silent. He stares at Morro, his expression frozen. “What.”
Morro shifts, uncomfortable at the stare Lloyd has on him. “What?”
“You’ve…never had pizza?” Lloyd finally gets out, as if the very idea is horrifying.
“No?” Morro offers. “You know I don’t eat dinner with you all. I certainly don’t eat your disgusting greasy junk food, either.”
“Disgusting — you’ve never had pizza,” Lloyd repeats, scandalized. “That’s what’s disgusting here. We’ve gotta fix this. Not even you deserve to go your life without pizza.”
“I’m touched,” Morro drones.
“Shut up, and pick out a topping.” Morro yelps as Lloyd suddenly materializes on the bed next to him, shoving the leaflet in his face. “So the standard go-to is cheese, ‘cause you can’t go wrong with that, but pepperoni’s pretty across the board, too. Kai and Nya like little peppers on theirs, so if you like spicy stuff that’s the way to go, but Cole swears by bacon bits, and Jay likes both. Zane likes the vegetable kind, but that’s just ‘cause he’s weird, so there’s that and pineapple, if you’re a mutant—”
“I’ll take the pineapple,” Morro blurts, in a desperate attempt to cut Lloyd’s babbling off.
Lloyd wrinkles his nose. “You’re not gonna like it,” he threatens. “But I’ll get us one of those split pizzas, so we can do like, two slices of pineapple, then the rest can be cheese and pepperoni, I guess, if that sounds good?”
“I literally could not care less.”
“Taking that as a yes!” Lloyd says, cheerfully. “You’re gonna love it.”
“Wonderful,” Morro grimaces. “Now get—” he shoves Lloyd, sending him sprawling to the floor with a yelp. “Back over on your side.”
It takes an unfortunately quick time for the pizza to be delivered, so Morro doesn’t have the chance to pretend he’s fallen asleep before Lloyd’s invading his space again, shoving the pizza in his face.
“Try it,” he demands. “One piece, and I’ll leave you alone.”
“That better be a promise,” Morro grouses, but he takes the slice he’s being offered, holding it gingerly between two fingers. He makes a face. “This is what you’ve been going on about? I can see the grease dripping off it.”
Lloyd rolls his eyes to the ceiling. “Just try it, geez. What are you, chicken?”
“What are you, five?” Morro retorts. He relents though, ever-so-carefully taking the tiniest of bites.
He pauses. Lloyd watches him expectantly. “And?”
Morro knows exactly what Lloyd wants to hear, and he’d eat rocks before he’d let him have it. Unfortunately, his tastebuds are arguing a different case.
Morro doesn’t reply, but he takes another bite, this one considerably larger. FSM be cursed, it’s good.
“Haha!” Lloyd crows, rocking back where he sits cross-legged on the floor. “You love it! I knew it.”
“I do not,” Morro argues. The mouthful of pizza he has doesn’t exactly sell his point.
“Do too,” Lloyd grins, taking his own slice.
Morro hesitates, then goes for another slice, giving in. “The pineapple stuff is pretty good,” he admits, reaching for the fruit-laden pizza. Lloyd chokes, his triumphant smile evaporating as his eyes go wide in horror.
“No. No, you can’t. I know you’re deranged, but you can’t be that far gone—”
“It’s good,” Morro shrugs, taking another bite.
Lloyd gags, looking as if he’d like to cry. He settles for a sigh of despair instead, reaching for one of the slices of cheese. The edges of the crust are a bit blackened, but Lloyd doesn’t seem to mind.
“When I was a kid,” he says, as he catches a trailing string of cheese with his fingers. “Burnt pizza was my favorite thing ever. It was super easy to get, if you hung out behind the restaurants. They’d always throw them out in boxes and stuff, so it wasn’t as gross to swipe outta the trash.”
Lloyd’s eyebrows furrow, and his expression drops. “Uh, I mean, sorry. The guys get weird when I talk about that stuff, ‘cause it’s…weird, I guess.”
Morro eyes him. Far be it from him to reassure Lloyd, but — “I don’t think it’s that weird,” he says. “I’d snag stuff from the trash all the time when I was on the streets.”
“Really?” Lloyd’s expression brightens. “That was how I always ate when I was hanging in cities! Smaller towns not so much, since you could swipe stuff from food stands easier there.”
Morro nods in agreement. “The bigger cities are a lot better for scavenging, but smaller villages are where it’s at for stealing. People let you get away easier there.”
“Yeah, exactly!” Lloyd exclaims. He shakes his head, muttering to himself. “I knew it wasn’t that weird. The guys just like to overreact all the time.”
“Tell me about it,” Morro snorts. “Wu’d always act like I’d kicked him in the shins when I brought that sort of stuff up.”
“Sounds like him,” Lloyd giggles, before lapsing back into silence as they both finish the pizza.
If Morro didn’t know any better, he’d call it comfortable.
***********
Sleeping, however, is not comfortable.
Morro stares up at the ceiling, his eyes wide open. Across the room, Lloyd does the same from his own bed.
“Go to sleep,” Morro finally says. “You’re creeping me out.”
“You go to sleep first,” Lloyd responds, after a minute.
Morro grits his teeth. “No, you.”
“What, so you can murder me?” Lloyd hisses.
“I’m more worried about you murdering me!” Morro hisses back.
“You’re the ex-criminal. Maybe I don’t wanna wake up to the Preeminent at my throat.”
“Well maybe I don’t want to wake up with the Serpentine at my neck.”
“Oh, shut up, you hypocritical jerk—”
“You’re the one with a blabber mouth, you stuck-up wannabe-martyr—”
***********
In the end, neither of them wake up with slit throats. Neither of them wake up with marker all over their face, or tied up in their own sheets, or halfway out the window, either. It is, quite possibly, a miracle.
***********
“Well, Lloyd charged a pizza to my credit card, so we know they’re alive, at least,” Cole sighs.
“He took your credit card?” Nya frowns. “I thought Morro was the one who— you know what, never mind, Lloyd makes perfect sense.”
“He redacted the location, too,” Cole taps wearily at his phone. “Wow, we really did raise a child criminal.”
Kai moans into his hands where he’s slumped over at the table, hunkering in the pits of anxiety-induced despair.
“Y’know, it’s not too late to chase them down,” Jay remarks. “Could be fun, we could all join in on whatever awful road trip they’re having.”
“Sensei Wu said we need to let them go,” Cole mutters. “So they can ‘work things out’. That, or he wants to collect on their life insurance early.”
Jay makes a face. “And we’re listening to him…why?”
“Lloyd disabled location services on his phone,” Zane says, dully. “And since the van was procured from Ronin—”
“We have no idea where they are,” Nya growls. “I’m going to slaughter him.”
“Morro, Lloyd, or Ronin?” Jay asks.
Nya exchanges looks with Kai. “Whichever one doesn’t hide well enough.”
***********
“So if we’re looking at this logically, I think our best bet is to just sneak in the park as tourists, so we blend in with everyone. It’s a pretty busy time of the year, so we should go unnoticed—”
“Next exit.”
“—and then we’ll be able to — huh?”
“Next exit. On the left.”
“The left? I thought it was the right. Are you sure you aren’t reading the map upside down again?”
The vein near Morro’s forehead throbs. “I’m not, now get in the — get in the left lane, Lloyd, or we’ll miss it!”
“I swear, if you make me U-turn in the middle of the highway again…” Lloyd grits out, but he sends them careening across the freeway, darting into the left lane just in time to make their turn. Morro clutches the armrest with white knuckles, desperately trying not to cover his eyes with his hands like he has every other time Lloyd’s driven.
“You drive like a maniac,” Morro finally gets out, as Lloyd pushes the car well over the local speed limit. “Whoever let you have a license should be jailed.”
“Wimp,” Lloyd mocks. “I don’t wanna hear it, with how you and your whack-job ghost pals would drive around.”
“That was different,” Morro grinds his teeth. “We had reliable vehicles and I was too dead to care. This is a bucket of bolts, and I’m unfortunately alive enough to not want to die in a fiery inferno because you crashed us head-on into a semi truck.”
“Seriously?” Lloyd rolls his eyes. “You sound like Uncle Wu.”
Morro turns to stare at him so fast his neck practically cracks. He continues to stare at Lloyd, his mouth half-open, too viscerally horrified to form a response.
He finally manages a croaked, “Take that back.”
“Nope.” Lloyd is grinning.
“Take it back, I sound nothing like him—”
Lloyd says nothing, still grinning. Dying in a fiery inferno is sounding better by the minute, if it means dragging Lloyd down with him.
“So anyways, as I was saying,” Lloyd continues, as they pull into view of the park. “I think we should slip in the park dressed like tourists—”
“Mm-hm.”
“—with tickets that I can buy on Cole’s credit card—”
“Classy.”
“—which’ll give our location away, ‘cause there’s no hiding that, but we should be clear out of here by the time he checks anyways—”
“Nobody cares.”
“—alright, alright, so we’re in as tourists, then we just…grab a shark and, uh, borrow one of their big moving trucks, I guess.”
Morro stares at him. “Borrow. The park’s semi truck they use to move sharks.”
Lloyd winces. “Well, we can’t fit the shark in here.”
They both give the minivan a once-over, and cringe in unison.
“So let me get this straight,” Morro rubs his temple as Lloyd pulls them into the parking lot, pocketing their tickets with the slightest expression of guilt and a whispered ‘Forgive me Cole’. “Your plan is to just…walk into the park, pretending we’re totally normal people, then somehow stuff a shark in a truck and — and what? Bust through the front gates?”
“I was more thinking we could swipe park uniforms while we’re in there, and sneak out like Star Wars,” Lloyd says, gesturing enthusiastically with his hands.
Morro buries his face in his hands. “I despise everything you are.”
“It’s a solid plan!” Lloyd defends, kicking the car door open. “It’s better than anything you have.”
“Planning for something this stupid would burn my brain cells to a crisp,” Morro grumbles, sliding out of the van. He eyes the vehicle, something occurring to him. “By the way. If we’re busting out of here in a park truck, what does that mean for this thing?”
Lloyd pauses, as if that thought hadn’t occurred to him. “Uh…” he sweats. “I’m, uh. I’m sure Ronin’s done something bad enough that he deserves us leaving it here.”
“We’re going to come out of this with so many people after our heads,” Morro exhales.
***********
Morro lets Lloyd snag them clothes from a nearby gift shop, which is probably the worst mistake he’s made in his life. Whether Lloyd is still aiming for a bit of revenge or his fashion sense really is just that appalling, the outfits he picks out for them almost succeed at burning Morro’s eyes out on the spot.
“What is this,” is all he manages to get out, staring blankly at the bright yellow, button-up shirt he’s holding in his hands. It wouldn’t be so bad, if it didn’t have ugly orange flowers and pineapples printed all over it as well.
“It’s what you get for liking pineapple on your pizza,” Lloyd quips, as he pulls a garishly orange t-shirt over his head. His shirt has “I Went to Oceanworld and All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt” printed on it in bright pink script, which is at least better than the ugly flowers Morro gets. On the other hand, Lloyd’s stuck with a pair of truly hideous, neon blue running shorts, while Morro at least gets navy cargo ones, so there’s that tiny victory.
“Also, these were the best options they had,” Lloyd winces, having caught a glimpse of himself in a shop window as they head toward the park entrance, a crowd of people already starting to form around them. “Here, put these on.”
Morro stares at the purple sunglasses Lloyd’s handed him. “Absolutely not.”
“This too,” Lloyd ignores him, shoving a neon green baseball cap on him. “See, I’m letting you have the green one, ‘cause—”
“If you even finish that sentence, I’ll drown you in the first fish tank we see,” Morro grits out, shoving the sunglasses on. Lloyd just gives him a sunny smile, tugging a vivid pink baseball cap over his hair. He, at least, looks like he fits in here, with his idiot smile and the way he almost starts bouncing as they mingle in the crowds. Morro, on the other hand, feels much as if he sticks out like a sore, sweaty thumb.
“You know, I might actually take you up on that drowning thing,” Lloyd mutters as they drift further into the park, tugging at the collar of his t-shirt. “If only so I end up in the water. It’s so hot.”
“Makes me miss your grandfather’s tomb,” Morro mutters beneath his breath. Lloyd spears him with a glare out of the corners of his eyes. “What?” Morro defends. “It was at least cold there.”
“I remember. I almost died ‘cause of it,” Lloyd growls, his eyes flashing in warning.
“Pretty sure you were more likely to die of starvation by that point,” Morro remarks easily. “But you were already a twig to begin with, so—”
He cuts off with a strangled shout of pain as Lloyd shoves him face-first into a sign, his nose crunching against the metal. Morro pulls away angrily, only to come face to face with a truly hellish, grinning shark on the sign, pointing its deformed fin to the right. Just below the awful shark is a small, printed square that points ahead, reading Park Maintenance: Transportation.
“Just so you know, I’m going to roundhouse-kick your teeth out for that later,” Morro tells Lloyd calmly. “But I think I’ve found our stop.”
Lloyd’s expression switches from Oni hell spawn of doom to enthusiastic devil child in a heartbeat. “Oh, seriously? That was fast.”
“Aw,” Morro sneers. “Did you want to stop by the kiddie park before we left?”
Lloyd’s eyes narrow, but he doesn’t spare Morro a second glance. “Nah, but I wanted a picture of you in that shirt to immortalize. Kai’ll get a kick out of it.”
Morro pales rapidly. “No. No, Kai does not hear a word of this. This stays between you and me forever and then we die. Kai. Never. Knows.”
“I’ll keep it quiet if you give me your credit card.”
“Ha! You know this entire family’s broke.”
Breaking into park maintenance is laughably easy — or it would have been, if they weren’t dressed in the ugliest, most obvious colors possible. They make it through three different doors on the excuse that they’re “poor, lost cousins whose uncle left them to die”, but after that they have to start knocking people out. Morro debates arguing for murder, because witnesses and all, but covering their stolen uniforms in blood before they even have the chance to wear them is probably a bad move.
At least the uniforms are a decent combo of white and sky blue, instead of a criminal offense on the eyes.
“Just like Star Wars!” Lloyd exclaims happily, as they sprint for the truck.
It takes every bit of Morro’s willpower not to lock him in the nearby fish tank. He doesn’t, though, because Lloyd somehow manages to locate the one shark actually scheduled for transport, which means all they have to do is subtly distract a few more employees and steal the truck before the furious horde of security guards on their tail catch up and send them both to the Departed Realm in style.
“I said subtly distract them!” Lloyd cries, as Morro neatly finishes chopping his hand into the last employee’s neck, sending him into blissful unconsciousness. “Not that!”
“Do not take the moral high ground with me now,” Morro snaps at him. “I saw what you did to the other security guard, you absolute menace.”
“That was different, can we just— oh, good, the shark’s in the tank and everything,” Lloyd pants, flicking through the little camera view screen on the truck dashboard. “And there’s the exit gate, and there’s — oh, there’s security coming to kill us.”
“What?” Morro yelps, craning his head over. “They shouldn’t have gotten through the door that soon, we haven’t even found the keys yet!”
“Don’t need keys.” Lloyd slides down, prying the compartment beneath the steering wheel open, exposing a mass of complicated wires. “Strap the shark in and lock the back doors,” he orders, as he starts pulling at them. “I’m gonna hot wire it.”
Morro has about a thousand and two questions for why, exactly, Lloyd knows how to hot wire a car, but he immediately decides he doesn’t want to know. Well, he kind of does, because it’s possibly the only cool thing Lloyd has revealed about himself, but running for their lives from angry, underpaid park employees doesn’t seem to be the best of times.
Morro sprints around the truck, yanking the doors open fully and hoisting himself into the trailer. The shark appears to be whacked out of its mind on what Morro’s guessing is a tranquilizer, floating happily in its little tank, and Morro desperately hopes that’s not about to change with the chaotic horror that is Lloyd’s driving.
“Hang tight, fish,” Morro mutters, as he tightens the box straps. Satisfied it won’t come loose, he stumbles out of the trailer, his hands shaking with adrenaline as he slams the truck doors closed, before skidding around the asphalt for the passenger seat.
“Any day now, Lloyd,” he urges, watching the first of the guards come into view in the car mirror.
“Almost got it,” Lloyd hisses, the tip of his tongue caught between his teeth as he yanks at the wires beneath the steering wheel. “Drat, these things are so much more complicated than smaller cars—”
“Lloyd, believe it or not, I really don’t want to kill anyone today.”
“Got it!” Lloyd exclaims triumphantly, slamming the panel closed as the car hums to life. He slides back up into the driver’s seat, throwing the gearshift forward. “Buckle up, this is gonna be fun!”
“You and I have—” Morro swallows a shriek as Lloyd guns the truck forward, his head smacking back against the passenger seat. “Entirely different definitions of fun.”
“You just don’t know what fun is,” Lloyd accuses as he presses harder on the gas, angered shouts from the security guards echoing behind them.
“I know it’s not what you’re doing,” Morro shoots back, as Lloyd smashes them through several plastic barriers.
“What? How is this not fun?” Lloyd gestures with one hand, the other veering the steering wheel to the right and sending the truck careening through the park exit, narrowly missing the transport shuttle.
“Fun is me having control of this thing,” Morro grits out. “Or having control in general. You know, like how I controlled you.”
Lloyd’s head turns to him, his eyes narrowing. “You are not bringing this back up now.”
“What, it’s fun— eyes on the road, eyes on the road!”
***********
By the time they make it on the interstate, well out of the city traffic, Morro’s lost any doubts he’s ever had that Lloyd is the actual blood descendant of the First Spinjitzu Master. There’s just no other way to explain how they manage to evade the entire park’s security staff as well as the local police without trouble, other than divine intervention.
As all things do, though, even divine intervention runs out. Unfortunately, it’s at the same time that Lloyd and Morro’s adrenaline high runs out as well, leaving them both exhausted and heavy-eyed. And also considerably short-tempered, so when Lloyd fails to spot the pothole in the dark and punctures their front tire, Morro’s already dangerously close to his breaking point.
It’s never a good place to be, when he’s around Lloyd.
“I swear, it’s in here somewhere,” Lloyd says, his eyebrows furrowing as he roots through the glove compartment again. “This is an official park vehicle, they can’t not have a manual.”
Morro doesn’t comment, too busy trying to slide the tire jack in place. It’s his fifth attempt so far, and the failures aren’t exactly helping his rising temper. It wouldn’t be quite as difficult if the road they were on wasn’t in the middle of nowhere, perched at the edge of a steep ravine. But it is, and the tire jack clanks out of place as Morro misses yet again.
“Aha! Got it. It doesn’t look too difficult, actually.”
Morro grits his teeth. How no one has murdered Lloyd for his unfailing optimism yet is beyond him. Utterly beyond him. Especially when it’s his fault in the first place.
“All we really need is to get the spare out from underneath,” Lloyd muses, skimming through the manual. “Then we should be good.”
“Stop saying we,” Morro finally snaps. “We did not destroy the tire. You did.”
Lloyd blinks, then frowns. “You didn’t exactly help,” he murmurs beneath his breath, bending down near the flat tire.
Morro’s fingers clench around the tire jack, his knuckles white. He is not going to lose his temper. He’s not. He is stuck in the middle of nowhere, with a stolen truck and a flat tire, with no help in sight, with Lloyd Garmadon of all people, but he is not going to lose his temper. It’s a waste of energy.
“Look, just — no, you’re doing it wrong,” Lloyd sighs.
Never mind. Morro’s got energy to spare.
“Would it kill you to shut up? For five seconds?” he snaps, whirling on Lloyd. Lloyd flinches back in alarm, and Morro snarls. “This is your fault, would it kill you to stop making things worse for once?”
Lloyd’s face pales. “I just—”
“We wouldn’t even be here if it wasn’t for you,” Morro steamrolls over him, not even giving him the chance to speak. He’s done, he’s so done with this. He’s held it together pretty well this whole time, gone along with Lloyd’s stupid trip for a reason he doesn’t even know, but this is it. Being alive is not worth the effort, at all.
“You dragged me on this, you and your stupid, selfish obsession with pretending everything’ll work out fine, like you’re some little kid,” Morro stabs his finger viciously at Lloyd. “Well guess what? Nothing is fine, and neither of us are kids! We never got to be kids, and we’ll never get to be kids, because your horrible family screwed up and you came along and made things so much worse!”
Hurt flickers across Lloyd’s face, and his eyes look oddly shiny. Morro’s too far into his rant to care.
“It’s typical,” Morro spits. “Absolutely perfect. This is all your fault, I mean it. Everything’s your fault, every single stupid thing that’s gone wrong in my life, if it wasn’t for you—”
Lloyd punches him square in the mouth.
It’s not even the hardest hit he’s ever received, but it’s hard enough to send him staggering back a couple steps. Morro reels, so flabbergasted that he’s unable to form words for a good half-minute. He blinks back tears of pain, staring at Lloyd in indignation. “You — you hit me!”
“And I’m not sorry about it at all!” Lloyd yells, fists clenched tightly by his sides, as if gearing up for another hit. “You deserved it!”
He punctuates this by hurling the tire block at him. Morro dodges easily, his own anger flaring back to life.
“You call that a hit?” he scoffs. “Pathetic. This is why you were so easy to possess, you know—”
“Shut up, shut up, shut up!” Lloyd cuts over him, kicking a rock at him this time. “FSM, what’s your problem? I don’t even know why I try with you!”
“My problem?” Morro snaps, true and properly angry now. “My problem is that some pint-sized brat stole my whole life from me, and now he’s out here—” Morro grunts as he throws the tire jack at Lloyd. “Trying to pretend we’re cousins!”
“Oh, your whole life,” Lloyd echoes, derisively. “What is it about the green gi that makes you so entitled? You’re like — you’re uglier than some stupid runner-up in a beauty pageant about it!”
Morro’s teeth clack together like a steel trap. “A beauty pageant?!”
“Yeah!” Lloyd shouts. “You’re like a screaming toddler! Who runs onstage and attacks the winner because they didn’t get first place in a contest for a stupid outfit!”
“It’s not! Just! An outfit!” Morro roars.
“I know that!” Lloyd snaps.
“Then why didn’t you give it to me!”
“Because you don’t deserve it! You’re a jerk!”
“You don’t even want it!” Morro yells. “You get the green gi and you don’t even appreciate it! This is why we’ll never be cousins!”
“Good! I don’t want you as a cousin! I hate you!” Lloyd screeches, throwing the car manual at him. “I hate you, I hate you so much!”
“I hate you too!” Morro howls, throwing the tire wrench. It spirals wildly off-aim. “Gods, you’re the worst—”
“Drop dead, Morro!” Lloyd screams.
“Make me!” Morro screams back. “Bet you don’t have it in you, you sniveling little—”
Lloyd, clearly determined to prove that he does have it in him, neatly cuts Morro off by tackling him around the waist, sending them both flying over the edge of the hill and rolling wildly into the ravine.
The screaming that follows is a lot less angry this time, and a lot more like the terrified screeching of two year-olds on a roller coaster.
***********
“D’you think...hospitals will take..the green gi as insurance?”
“S’worth...a try. Not sure, think…my head might’ve cracked.”
“I think I heard my spine snap.”
“Pretty sure that was my knee detaching.”
Morro winces, closing his eyes briefly before opening them, staring up at the starry night sky. There’s a shifting noise near his head, before Lloyd curses, moaning in pain as it stops abruptly.
As it turns out, the ravine went a bit deeper than either of them had been prepared for. The end result is Lloyd and Morro both sprawled at the bottom of the ravine, staring into the void of space as they rethink their particular life choices up to this point. There had been a brief moment where they both attempted to shove themselves back up to continue their fight, but that dream had rapidly died as they both collapsed back into the grass, groaning in pain.
It did kill his temper rather effectively, Morro will admit. It’s difficult to keep screaming when your ribs feel like they’ve been used as a drum by a baseball bat. So they continue to lie there in silence, before Lloyd finally stirs.
“So that, uh,” Lloyd finally breathes. “That was. A lot.”
Morro winces. “Yeah. That was — I haven’t yelled like that in a while.”
“Aw, man,” Lloyd laughs humorlessly, still staring at the sky. “I don’t think I’ve yelled like that since I was like, eight.”
The crickets around them buzz loudly as they lapse into silence. At least the sky’s stopped spinning, Morro thinks.
“I think. Um. I think I probably crossed a line.”
Lloyd’s voice is so quiet, Morro almost misses it. He doesn’t miss the apologetic tone, though.
Morro’s lips press together as something in his chest twists that better not be guilt. “I..might have, as well.”
Lloyd hums. “I probably shouldn’t have compared everything you went through to a toddler.”
“Well,” Morro pauses, thinking back on it. “I mean. That crack about the beauty pageant was kinda funny.”
Lloyd gives a breathless little laugh. “Wanna know something awful?”
Morro cranes his head slightly. “Hm?”
“I actually stole that from Nya. And she was, uh, talking about Kai.”
Morro’s eyebrows shoot up. “No, you didn’t.”
“Yeah, I did,” Lloyd giggles. “It was after the whole thing with Chen — you saw that, right, in my head?”
“Uh...kind of. Sorry?”
“Nah, I don’t care as much about that one. Anyways, he was a mopey mess after it. Nya was kind of bitter. I might have been…a little bit, too. In secret.”
Morro smirks despite himself. “The Green Ninja, secretly bitter.”
“I’ll never be as bitter as you,” Lloyd retorts.
Morro’s smirk fades. “That’s fair, I guess.” He looks back at the sky, scrubbing a hand across his eyes. “Sorry I brought up possessing you again,” he mutters. “That was…probably uncalled for.”
“Yeah,” Lloyd says. “Pretty uncool that you keep doing that.”
“Yeah, well.” Morro sighs. “I’m a work in progress. But still. Sorry.”
“It’s okay. I get it, I think. Not the bringing up the possession part, but the work in progress part.”
“Oh.” Morro chews on the edge of his lip. “Then, uh, I’m also — I’m also sorry I said everything’s your fault.” He closes his eyes tightly. Curse it, the feeling twisting his chest up is most certainly guilt. “That was definitely uncalled for.”
“No,” Lloyd says, quietly. “That’s…that’s fair, too.”
Morro’s eyes blink open, and he cranes his head back to stare at him. “What? No, it’s not. Blame your grandfather, or your dad, or even Wu. Or that, um, giant snake thing, that kept popping up—”
“The Great Devourer?”
“Yeah, blame that.” Morro briefly squeezes his eyes shut again. Oh, this hurts to say out loud. “You’re…you’re still a kid. You’ve been a kid, even if life sucks enough to make it feel like you’re not. S’not fair to blame it all on you.”
Lloyd is silent for a moment, and Morro hopes he’s heard the apology in his words. That’s a new hope for him to have, but it’s genuine.
“Same goes for you, then.” Lloyd’s voice is still quiet, but it’s got that painful sincerity — the kind Morro’s heard before, but never directed at him. “I mean, possessing me wasn’t good, but… everyone deserves a chance to make things right. You’re a kid, too.”
“Lloyd, you know I’m technically like, forty.”
“Yeah, in ghost years. Being dead doesn’t count.”
“Like you’d know.” Morro breaths a humorless laugh. “Either way, it doesn’t change the fact that I went after a kid for getting slapped with the green gi.”
Lloyd inhales sharply. “Could you maybe go at least five minutes without bringing that up? Just this once?”
Morro blinks at the sudden frustration in Lloyd’s voice. “W-what?”
The grass rustles as Lloyd shakes his head, but he blows his breath out, the anger seeping from him. “I just — I’m sick of it. I get that you hate me, but you could at least have the decency to hate me for me,” he says, wearily. “Hate me for like, my obnoxious habit of repeating stuff, or my annoying voice.”
Morro is quiet for a moment. “Your voice isn’t that bad anymore,” he admits.
Lloyd snorts. “You don’t have to lie.”
“No, I’m serious. It doesn’t do that squeaky-toy cracking thing anymore.”
“Well that makes me feel so much better,” Lloyd huffs.
“You’re welcome,” Morro grins. They lapse into silence again, and the grin slides slowly off of Morro’s face. Oh, curse everything, why is his chest still twisting up in knots.
He finally puffs out a weary breath of defeat. “And I don’t…entirely hate you.”
Lloyd is quiet, digesting that. “Huh. Really?”
“Yeah. Hate your stupid gi, though.”
“Oh, same. You have no idea.”
“Starting to get that, I think.”
“Heh. I guess I don’t…entirely hate you, either.”
“Really.”
“Yeah.”
“Disgusting.”
***********
The tire is surprisingly easy to change, when they’re not trying to bite each other’s heads off. There’s no damage to the actual truck or trailer either, so they’re back on the road before daybreak. Lloyd fretfully checks on the shark a minimum of twenty times, but it’s fine as well, peacefully floating in its little tank. He lets Morro drive, in what may or may not be a peace offering, so Morro lets Lloyd choose the music, which is definitely a peace offering. It’s the only way he’d ever willingly listen to the amount of acoustic music Lloyd plays them.
Well…that he’d admit willingly listening to.
They don’t talk much, but it’s a surprisingly comfortable silence, and by the time they pull up to Lloyd’s beach, half finished with the horrendously cheap coffee they snagged from the gas station, Morro doesn’t feel quite as annoyed with the world on the whole.
In fact, he feels dangerously close to being at peace with it, which is obviously unacceptable, so he makes sure to stub his toe at least three times as they maneuver the now-awake and incredibly annoyed shark into the waves.
“Hey, hey, c’mon buddy,” Lloyd soothes, waist-deep in the water as he coaxes the shark toward him. “It’s okay, we’re setting you free. Don’t eat us when there’s much more tasty seafood in the ocean.”
“Maybe Oni is a delicacy for sharks,” Morro suggests, his feet firmly planted on the shore. He’s been assisting with his wind, floating the shark down gently, and that’s already more than enough. “I bet seafood pales in comparison to demon flesh.”
“You’re disgusting,” Lloyd says, but his lips quirk up. “In that case, maybe I should just drop him on my dad.”
Morro snorts, watching as Lloyd finally gets the shark to deeper water, where it swishes its tail happily, clearly overjoyed to be free from its tiny tank.
“There we go,” Lloyd smiles as it swims around him. “Much better, huh?”
Morro watches the shark swim a moment longer, wrinkling his nose as sand digs between his toes. He stifles a yawn, but the coastal winds are picking up around him, gently tugging through his hair and leaving him less tired as his element ghosts over his skin, as if whispering his name.
He’s missed wind like this. The gentler kind.
He finally turns his attention back to Lloyd, and his eyebrows furrow.
“You know this is just one shark, right?”
“Mm-hm,” Lloyd hums happily, letting the shark nose against his hand.
“That doesn’t bode well for your shark tornado plan,” Morro reminds him.
“Eh,” Lloyd shrugs. “I guess freeing a shark is as good as that. I can always get my dad back later.”
“You could dye your hair, that might do the trick.”
Lloyd gives a wry smile. “It wasn’t really about that, anyways,” he murmurs, so quietly Morro almost misses it.
Morro doesn’t know if he wants to try and guess what that’s supposed to mean, so he averts his gaze instead, looking across the quiet, empty beach. It’s removed from the busier parts of the coast, almost abandoned. Certainly not the kind of place Morro would’ve seen Lloyd picking out for a weekend trip.
“So why this beach, in particular?” he finally asks. “Seems pretty out of the way, just for this.”
Lloyd is quiet for a moment, his hands creating tiny eddies in the water around him. His face falls a fraction as he watches the shark swim off, deeper into the ocean, and he dips lower into the water.
“I came here with my dad, once,” he says, quietly. “After he was… back to normal. Without the venom, and all.”
“Oh.” Morro blinks. There’s a lot of meaning behind those words. For some reason, he’s almost frightened to try and decipher it.
Lloyd saves him from it, straightening up where he stands in the water. “So, are you gonna get in, or what?”
Morro blinks, then violently shakes his head. “No. Absolutely not. Water and I are not compatible. You know that.”
“You weren’t before,” Lloyd insists. “You are now.”
“What was that you were saying earlier?” Morro reminds him, snidely. “About traumas, and stuff?”
Lloyd’s brow furrows, in what could almost be concern. “You don’t have to,” he says, slowly. “But this is a nice place to start.”
Morro stares at the sand before him, a mere three feet from where the waves stop washing up on shore. He makes a face. It’s not like he’s scared of water. He takes showers, and he’s not afraid to sprint out in the rain if he’s left a book or something outside. But those are just — water in small doses. This sparkling blue hellhole of toxicity is different. It’s saltwater. Saltwater brings back…less than pleasant memories.
Granted, this particular body of toxic seawater doesn’t seem to be quite as deadly at the moment. Lloyd’s skin hasn’t slid off his bones yet, and he’s floating up to his neck in the stuff.
“I’ll pass,” Morro finally says, stiffly. “It’s, uh, a little too rough for me out there.”
Lloyd looks pointedly at where the gentle waves barely lap the shore. Morro grits his teeth. Drat. That makes it rather difficult not to admit that he does, probably, look like a coward. Lloyd tilts his head to the side, studying him with the eerie red eyes he gets sometimes. Morro doesn’t like the look that forms on his face.
“Why,” he says, with a gleam in his eyes. “Are you scared?”
Even though Morro’s seen that coming a mile away, he still reddens. “No.”
Lloyd raises an eyebrow. “Kinda looks like you’re scared.”
“I am not.”
Lloyd squints at him. Then, without warning, he splashes the smallest bit of seawater up toward him. Morro jumps back, with what he’ll die before he admits is a high-pitched shriek, skittering away from the tiny droplets.
Lloyd bursts into giggles, and Morro feels his cheeks blazing. “That was low, you little insect—”
“Chicken, chicken, Morro’s a chicken,” Lloyd taunts over him.
“I’ll kill you,” Morro threatens.
“Oh yeah?” Lloyd flashes his teeth at him. “How’re you gonna do that when I’m in the water?”
Morro’s hands clench into fists as he seethes. “I am not scared of the water.”
“Yes, you are.”
Morro takes a threatening step toward him, brandishing his fist. “I am not a chicken!”
“Yes you a-are,” Lloyd repeats gleefully. “Chicken, chicken—”
“Shut up—”
“Bawk, bawk—”
“I’ll break your spine—”
“Not with your chicken arms you won’t—”
“Enough with the chicken!” Morro roars, shaking Lloyd by the collar of his soaking t-shirt. “I am not scared!”
Lloyd presses his lips together, barely holding back what’s either laughter or another one of those infuriating smiles. “Okay, geez. You proved me wrong.”
Morro blinks. Lloyd looks down, and Morro follows his gaze. He blinks again.
He’s standing waist-deep in the saltwater with Lloyd, waves swirling gently around him. His flesh is not melting off. He is not dying an excruciating death. It doesn’t feel like corrosive acid. It feels like…regular water. Kind of cold, regular water, that smells a little like fish.
Morro stares at the water, letting Lloyd’s shirt go as his arms hang limply by his sides. He didn’t even notice putting a foot in.
“Hey, look,” Lloyd says, brightly. “You’re not dead."
Morro should strangle him for this. Lloyd’s tricked him into the toxic death water by annoying him, and Morro didn’t even notice. He should celebrate this new accomplishment by holding Lloyd’s head under the water until he drowns.
Oddly enough, all he can find it in himself to do is stare at the water with the tiniest of smiles. “I’m not dead,” he echoes, quietly.
Lloyd beams at him, and he doesn’t even want to strangle him for it. Morro stands waist-deep in the water, completely at ease, and feels something odd bubble up in his throat. It’s light and easy, like his chest is filling up with a balloon, and for a brief second, he meets Lloyd’s beaming smile with one of his own.
Naturally, that’s when the beach blows up.
***********
On second thought, the ocean can die.
Morro immediately changes his mind about seawater as he’s knocked beneath a large wave, swallowing a mouthful of disgusting salt liquid. Panic twists around his heart as he flails briefly, before a hand locks firmly around his arm and yanks, pulling him to the surface and dragging him forward.
“—can’t believe this, again?!” Lloyd’s yelling in his ear as Morro splutters out saltwater. “What is it now, someone whose got aunt we got fired?”
“Don’t be ridiculousss, you know your own worth,” a hissing voice laughs across the water, and Morro struggles to find his footing as Lloyd drags them both onto the beach. “Imagine my delight when I realized the Green Ninja was lounging on the beach!”
Morro finally manages to push his sopping hair from his face, and he blinks saltwater from his eyes as his vision clears. Several paces down the sand from them stands a scarlet Hypnobrai, an admittedly intimidating weapon held in its scaly hands.
“Oh, of course!” Lloyd spits. “Stupid green power, would it kill you to let me get five minutes of—”
He cuts off in a yelp as the Serpentine fires at them again, dragging Morro to the sand with him as the grenade blast streaks over their heads, exploding somewhere further down the beach.
“It’s okay,” Lloyd pants, as they scramble to their feet. “This is — it’s all good, it’s just one Serpentine. We can handle this, easy.”
Morro whips his head across the beach. “You do see the other four, right?”
“The other—” Lloyd swears. “How did they all get grenade launchers?”
“That’s what you’re worried about right now?” Morro shouts, as they narrowly avoid another three blasts. The lead Hypnobrai cackles wildly at them, waving his weapon like a war flag.
“How did you even find me?” Lloyd yells, as he and Morro sprint around the jetty for cover, stumbling over the protruding rocks. “This is the middle of nowhere!”
The Hypnobrai grins, sharp teeth flashing. “Oh, we wouldn’t have! But I recognized the name on the credit card used at the gas station. To be honest, I was actually expecting the earth ninja.”
“Are you kidding me?!” Lloyd cries. “What kind of karma—”
Morro grasps him firmly by the shoulders and yanks him down, just before another streaking blast of flame can take his head off. Morro cringes as the ensuing explosion rocks the ground beneath them, his ears ringing.
Lloyd crouches lower beside him, muttering frantically. “I’m sorry, okay, I’m sorry,” he’s saying in the vague direction of the sky. “I’ll never steal anyone’s credit card again, I promise, I’m sorry—”
“Are you — apologizing to your grandfather right now?” Morro gapes at him.
Lloyd throws his hands in the air. “This has gotta be someone's fau—alt, move!”
He yanks them to the side as another blast narrowly misses them, almost knocking them clear off their feet. Morro grits his teeth, frustration spiking.
“This would be a great time for a plan, oh ninja leader,” he snaps.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m on it,” Lloyd’s hands flash green. “Just follow my—”
He gasps, his eyes going wide at something beyond Morro’s shoulder. Morro has a split second of confusion before Lloyd shoves him to the ground, bright green energy blazing to life in a makeshift shield—
Just in time for the next blast to hit him dead on, sending him flying back into the jetty.
Lloyd gives a single, sharp cry before his head strikes the edge of a rock, abruptly going silent as he tumbles to the edge of the jetty, inches from being swept away by the water. He doesn’t move after that.
Morro’s stomach bottoms out, his blood running cold as he’s hit with a sudden rush of terror so strong he almost loses his balance.
Then the rage hits.
Morro turns on the Hypnobrai who fired the blast, his eyes flaming. The snake swallows, suddenly looking pale as he clutches at his weapon.
“Um—”
Morro roars, and the wind turns sharp and vicious, swirling around him in a vortex of fury. The Serpentine shriek in terror as they’re swept up in the gale, Morro’s wind howling as it tears the weapons from their hands. Morro barely hears them, his mind still stuck on the single scream before Lloyd had fallen silent. Anger blazes hot in his chest, and the wind grows bitterly cold, flinging water from the ocean higher and higher. Saltwater splashes against his cheeks, but Morro hardly feels it. He lets the water power his wind instead, sweeping into a furious storm.
He could easily kill them right now — happily, even. But Morro’s been an entire mess of conflicting emotions this weekend, and he’s got more pressing things to worry about, so he sends their weapons flying far out into the ocean instead. He narrows his eyes on them in fury, before hissing out, “Get. Lost.”
They don’t need any help fleeing after that, but Morro still launches them a good thirty feet away. For good measure.
He lets the wind die bit by bit, water splashing back into the ocean. Morro suddenly becomes aware of how his hands are trembling, shaking in the aftermath of adrenaline. There’s a moment of crushing silence in the absence of his howling wind, and his stomach drops.
He whips around, his eyes searching the empty beach desperately. He wasn’t — he hadn’t been thinking of Lloyd when he’d kicked the storm up, but what if—
“Lloyd,” Morro rasps, his throat closing over in fear. “Lloyd, where are you, please—”
“M’here.”
Lloyd stumbles from behind the jetty, coughing up a mouthful of saltwater as he sways dizzily, rubbing his head. “Ow, ow, ow. I’m gonna feel that for—”
Lloyd cuts off in a yelp as Morro grabs him forcefully, pulling him in and wrapping his arms around him. Lloyd goes painfully rigid, his breathing uneven for a beat before he gingerly reaches back, awkwardly patting Morro’s shoulder with his one free hand.
“Uh, M-Morro?”
He clutches him tighter. “Shut up.”
“Mo’o, yer crush’n me.”
“Shut up. You’re terrible. You’re horrible. I get why Kai’s so grumpy all the time. How does Kai not have grey hair. How.”
Lloyd makes a muffled sound of indignation as Morro refuses to let go. He probably looks ridiculous, but he can’t find it in himself to care. A host of realizations are hitting him at once, and it’s making him slightly nauseous.
For a second, Lloyd had been quiet. He’d been still and unmoving, and he could’ve been dead. Which would have been bad, apparently, for Morro, because Lloyd can’t die. Because if Lloyd dies, then Morro won’t have a pint-sized blond cousin to yell all the angsty stuff out with, and if Lloyd dies then who’s gonna drag him out of his self-induced isolating depression and make him try gross food and break the law and actually interact in the world? Morro can’t lose that. Lloyd’s the only person who’s genuinely made Morro feel like a person, he can’t go die before Morro makes at least some attempt to apologize for being horrible in general to him.
It clicks, finally, like getting hit in the face with the blunt end of a shovel. Morro is, without a doubt, terrified of the idea of losing Lloyd. Oh no. Oh, this is awful. Because if Morro’s scared of losing Lloyd, that must mean—
“Aw, you do care,” Lloyd croaks, his voice watery.
Morro, soaking wet and holding the one person he’s wanted to see dead most like an over-sized teddy bear in need of love, wants to die.
***********
“You tricked me.”
“Huh?”
Morro shakes his head, pulling the edge of his blanket up around his shoulders, shifting on the uncomfortable sidewalk that lines the parking lot. They’re both bundled up in emergency blankets they swiped from the truck, shivering in their wet clothes even as the sun climbs higher in the sky above them.
“You tricked me,” Morro repeats. “You tricked me into tolerating you long enough that I somehow got duped into liking you as a person. You irritated your way into my life.”
Lloyd breathes a laugh, before wincing and pressing his hand to his forehead again. “You should talk to Kai, I did the same thing to him.”
“You dragged him on a road trip from hell, too?” Morro wonders if he’s been too hard on Kai.
“Not exactly,” Lloyd says. “I did get him stuck in a volcano though.”
“Typical,” Morro mutters. “I don’t even have trouble believing that. You’re a menace."
“Aw, c’mon,” Lloyd grins. “Didn’t I hear you saying that you liked me as person?”
Morro bristles. “No,” he says, firmly. “That’s your concussion talking.”
Lloyd rolls his eyes. “I don’t have concuss— ow, Morro, stop!”
“Huh. Your head isn’t gushing blood, so that’s good,” Morro remarks, pulling his hand away from the back of Lloyd’s head. “That’s still gonna be a bump, though.”
“My hair hides it though, right?” Lloyd’s expression is slightly panicked. “You can’t see it, right?”
“The bump? No.” Morro gestures to Lloyd’s face. “The black eye? Yes.”
“Oh, no.” Lloyd buries his face in his hands. “That’s it, then. I’m toast.”
“Oh, you’re toast,” Morro scoffs. “Kai’s gonna wring my neck.”
Lloyd lifts his face from his hands, shaking his head. “No. I’ll tell him you saved me. That’ll buy you points.”
“Kai’s gonna love that,” Morro snorts.
“Yeah, well.” Lloyd sighs, pulling his blanket around his shoulders. “What’cha gonna do.”
Morro scoffs, pulling his own blanket tighter over his shoulders. The ocean breezes are still a bit chilly with their damp clothes, but the wind is as peaceful as it was earlier, lulling them both into a sleepy kind of haziness. Morro feels disgustingly at peace with the world again, soaking wet and sitting on a sidewalk in the middle of a half-destroyed beach with Lloyd, but he can’t muster up the energy to make himself feel otherwise. Being at peace for five minutes won’t hurt, he reasons.
“By the way, remind me to check the truck before we return it,” Lloyd suddenly says, yawning. “I think I left Kai’s apology present in there.”
Morro frowns. “His what now?”
“Apology present,” Lloyd sighs, scrubbing at his eye. “For putting him through hell.”
“Him?” Morro gapes at Lloyd. “What about me? Where’s my apology gift for getting dragged through hell?”
“Your apology gift is me not hating your guts,” Lloyd huffs, pulling his blanket fully over his hair, like an incredibly ugly veil. “And like, forgiveness and stuff.”
Morro opens his mouth, then abruptly snaps it shut as Lloyd’s words register. He stares at him, feeling a bit dizzy all of the sudden.
“You — what — forgive—?”
“You heard me,” Lloyd yawns again. He perks up, blinking. “Oh, hey, speak of the devil. There they are.”
Morro just catches the familiar hum of Bounty’s engine before the anchor crashes into the parking lot before them, splintering long cracks in the concrete. Lloyd and Morro stare up at the figures on the deck. Morro swallows.
“You’ve, uh, you’ve written up your will, right?” Lloyd gulps.
Morro shakes his head, wordlessly.
Lloyd gives a nervous laugh. “Okay, good. I haven’t either.” He watches in trepidation as a red figure begins sliding down the anchor chain toward them. “Maybe should’ve done that sooner,” he whispers to himself.
***********
Kai doesn’t murder them, but it’s a near thing. In the end, Nya comes nearer to committing homicide, followed closely by Cole.
“Why mine?” he wails, shaking Lloyd by the edges of his blanket the minute Kai hauls them both onto the Bounty. “Why couldn’t you have snatched Jay’s credit card? He’d at least deserve it!”
“I’m sorry,” Lloyd wails back. “I learned my lesson, I promise, I’ll never do it again—”
“For crying out loud,” Nya mutters, watching them both before turning narrowed eyes on Morro. “Well, I was going to murder you, but somehow Lloyd’s still alive.”
Morro’s too tired to even fight back. “He’s like a barnacle,” he says, hazily. “Like — like those parasite things. You let them get to close and you’re stuck for life, those things, you know?”
Nya presses her lips together tightly, but her eyes sparkle in amusement.
“He got you too, huh?” Jay remarks, studying one of the grenade launchers he fished out of the water. “Join the club. Ooh, nice, this has got some real firepower…”
Morro buries his face in his hands. “Just put me out of my misery.”
“Happily,” Kai snaps, his eyes slightly manic from what’s either sleep deprivation or extreme stress. Zane catches him gently, tugging him away from Morro.
“Welcome to the team, I suppose,” Zane tells him, with an easy smile.
Morro groans. He wants to—
Well. He doesn’t exactly want to die. It’s close, but he doesn’t. Not really.
It’s an odd feeling, whatever leaves him off-kilter as he steps below the deck with Lloyd. Maybe that’s just his own sleep deprivation, but still. He snags Lloyd by the elbow before he disappears into his room, and Lloyd pauses, staring curiously at him.
“What you said,” Morro begins, hesitantly. “In the parking lot, about— forgi—that thing.”
Lloyd’s eyes dart to the floor, but he sets his jaw. “That thing. I, uh, yeah. No take backs, right?”
Morro blinks wildly, his tired brain barely able to digest that. “You know you could’ve gotten rid of me out there,” he tries, desperately reaching for sense. “You missed your chance.”
Lloyd meets his eyes again, shaking his head. “Oh, Morro,” he sighs. “Don’t you know the best way to defeat your enemy is to make them your friend?”
Morro stares at him. Lloyd gives him a sharp-teethed grin. “Besides,” he continues. “What’s the point in holding a grudge, when getting you to care about me is much better revenge?”
Morro stiffens. “I don’t care about you,” he protests.
“Nuh-uh, too late now,” Lloyd’s grin widens. “Before you know it, you’ll be calling me cousin. Eating dinner with us. Calling Kai buddy.”
“I would never,” Morro hisses.
Lloyd’s grin is positively sinister. “Oh, you will,” he says. “Because you care now.”
Morro is horrified, truly horrified, to find that saying no to Lloyd’s claim would be a lie. “You’re a monster,” he whispers.
Lloyd smiles brightly. “I’ll see you in practice tomorrow!” he calls cheerfully, before slamming the door in his face.
Morro stares after him blankly, the ugly Oceanworld blanket still hanging limply from his shoulders.
“I hate him,” he finally tells the door, wearily.
Oh, curse everything. Morro can’t even convince himself the door believes him.

Headcanon/Pokéninjago version of Lloyd’s identity crisis during season 5 of Ninjago
Got ab 12 likes on the announcement post so here we are: This is an essay-sorta-thing about something I thought and wrote some six years ago. It’s been so long since I wrote this I feel cringy reading it, but it’s tenable in Pokéninjago lore. It’s kind of a mix between my headcanon for the show, and canon of my AU, which is why there is mentions of “evolving” and Pokémon types.
Things to take into account:
Idk if there should be content warnings, but depression mention at least. Otherwise, this is pretty much as intense as season 5 went, just a little more angsty I suppose.
I must say that my version of Lloyd and his identity crisis were inspired by a certain artist’s version of him and by a comic they made about the Child’s Play episode’s aftermath. I don’t dare name the artist, since they don’t wish to be linked with the Ninjago fandom anymore, but some of you might know who I’m referring to.
I do not know how psychology stuff actually works, all of this was made on grounds of a couple of high school psychology courses and a lot of imagination `:D
I wrote this originally in Finnish and let Word translate it, so this might be v clumsy at points.
Most of the text is under the cut!
~***~
When Lloyd was just a small cub, closer to three years, his mother had left him in his father's care. Misako knew the boy would become the Green Ninja and Garmadon would become the Dark Lord. That is why she went looking for any ancient knowledge to avoid the final confrontation. Although her heart was torn since she had to leave her loved ones, she knew that she couldn’t just sit on her hands, and that perhaps she was the only one that could prevent the decisive battle between good and evil. It was also her wish that the father and the son could spend as much time together as possible. Thus, Lloyd's earliest childhood memories are about his father, and his recollections of his mother are blurry, obscure, and fading away as he grows up, or mixing with other memories.
Dad meant everything to little Lloyd. Although they lived in the same monastery with Lloyd’s uncle as well, whom he also liked, his own father was still the greatest. Garmadon also loved his child deeply and wanted him to have a happy life. Although the poison in his veins was starting to get a hold of him and he was increasingly drawn to the Golden Weapons, his love for Lloyd and the desire to be with him in anticipation of Misako's return kept him away from them for much longer than if the boy had never existed.
When Lloyd "evolved," he lost some important years of his life, during which a youngster usually developes a picture of himself and his changing body. Lloyd's body changed in a single moment and even though his mind also changed to some degree, it was still mostly on the same level as before, since artificial aging did not bring him the years of experience that growing up normally would. From that moment on, he had to form himself a new image of himself. Frankly, he was facing a fierce identity crisis.
After the episode Child's Play, Lloyd adopted an identity whose foundation was flimsy and unstable. It consisted of a few simple pillars that supported his image of himself. Some emotions, thoughts, and memories that he could not, wasn’t able to or didn’t dare to deal with, secretly and slowly gnawed at those pillars like erosion. They grew into doubt that settled into the cracks like rockfoil.
That flimsy foundation for his self-image, consisted of these elements: I am the Green Ninja. I'm the strongest ninja of all. I’m the son of sensei Garmadon. I’m the grandson of The First Spinjitzu Master. I'm one of the Elemental Masters. I'm a student of Sensei Wu. I'm one of the five elemental ninjas. It's my destiny to protect the world from evil.
This made it easy for Morro to destabilize and crush Lloyd’s self-esteem. Morro proved himself to be stronger and more independent than Lloyd, and that he could win him over and over again, no matter how hard Lloyd tried to fight back. Lloyd felt weak and desperate. Two pillars of his self-image collapsed to the ground and the masked emotions and doubts that chipped away at the other columns began to grow and intensify: He was not the strongest ninja and was therefore unable to protect the world from this evil.
This also affected his view of him as the Green Ninja. Although logically he still was just that – the Golden Weapons and his powers had proven it – he could not help but think that maybe Morro really was supposed to be the Chosen One. His identity was cracking, which ate away at his strength and self-esteem. Being a Psychic Type, his greatest strength resided in his psyche, and whenever his mind was in an unstable and vulnerable state, he couldn’t do his best, even if he had used everything he had learned. Losing his father fairly recently had already struck a dangerous notch in his mental stability.
Even though Lloyd was still his father's son, it didn't feel the same when he was no longer with him. Finally, he was only driven forward by his relationship with his other loved ones. He had to do everything he could to stop Morro from harming his friends. By protecting them he was also protecting the last intact remnants of his Self.
Lloyd did everything he could to resist Morro's possession. From time to time a memory of his friends and the will to keep them safe increased his "self-control," weakening the ghost's hold on him. However, a long, grueling time in constant motion, without water and nourishment, poisoned by a cold, vindictive spirit, steadily filled his mind with anguish and despair. Doubts penetrated deep into the tears of his self-image, breaking everything old until he no longer knew who he was. Only with the last bits of his mental strength could he interfere with Morro's possession so that he failed to clear the other ninjas out of his way.
Then, when Morro broke away from Lloyd's body, the Espeon felt like nothing more than an empty, broken shell floating aimlessly in the dark, beachless sea. He was unable to live up to any of the expectations and goals that had been set for him. Now, he was used as a trade-in item in the market of the world’s destiny. He longer had the strength or power to save even his best friends. He was as helpless as a newborn pup and all he could do was to stand by and apologize when he was traded for Realm Crystal.
Somewhere from his past, he dug up one last spark of strength. Already as a child, he had been left alone with unfriendly people, who then had ignited that stubborn flame in him: the desire to fight the cruel, unjust and repressive world. His body still had more strength than his mind, and this momentary burst of grit made him kick the Crystal out of Morro's hand. This, however, caused him to end up in the freezing stream, all his energy used up. There was not much left but a primitive desire to survive and a little strength to keep his head afloat before the cold numbed his muscles.
Lloyd's mind was in shambles. Images, memories, shattered fragments of his adopted identity… they all churned in his tired, blurred consciousness. Unintentionally, he began to go through the feelings of uncertainty, fear and inadequacy that he had denied from himself for years. The present seemed more surreal than the memories. He relived moments that had had a revolutionary impact on his life: When the golden weapons pointed him out as a Green Ninja; when he grew up under the influence of Tomorrow's Tea; when he met his mother and became to know her; when he unleashed the Golden Dragon in the Temple of Light; how he fought the Overlord who was possessing his father; how he harnessed his True Potential; got his father back; lost Zane; reunited his friends again and felt great togetherness with the other Elemental Masters. When he lost his father again. And when Morro possessed him.
Lloyd was lost. If it wasn’t for his friends and their care, he would have sunk deep into depression (and, on the other hand, drowned or, at the very least, died of hypothermia). When Kai carried him out of the FSM’s tomb, it triggered a very clear memory of the day when the Master of Fire had fulfilled his potential and Lloyd had been identified as the Chosen One. That day, Kai had come to save him from an erupting volcano and carried him to safety. Now, Lloyd felt like he was that little scared cub again, who had for a moment thought he was going to burn to the ground in the boiling lava of the volcano. He remembered how Kai's closeness had brought a feeling of immediate security around him. Even though the mountain had raged and wanted to kill them both, Lloyd had known he didn’t have to be afraid. Kai was there. He'd protect Lloyd. There was no reason to fight the fear anymore, he didn't have to pretend like he was tough. He was carried by someone older and stronger, whom to rely on.
The feeling was so intense, the memory so vivid that Lloyd was overwhelmed by an inexplicable, immense grief. The sadness of being forced to give up a carefree childhood so early on, to take on an enormous responsibility and assume a role that seemed too demanding for such a small boy to perform. He had had to grow up way too soon. He started shaking from holding back the tears. He didn’t mind since he thought Kai was probably assuming that he was shivering from the cold. But when Kai said quietly and understandingly: "Shh... It's okay... Don't worry about it," the last wall of pride and fear fell, and Lloyd could no longer repress his weeping.
At this point, he slowly began to build a new identity on the ruins of the wrecked one. He understood that even though he was the Green Ninja, it didn’t make him greater or more important than the others. He had more magical power than anyone else, but he was still only a person just like them. He could hesitate, too, and fail. There was no way for him to do anything more than what he was capable of, mentally, physically, and skill-wise. That’s all there was to offer, and if it wasn't enough, there were others whom he could rely on. Others, who would catch him when he ran out of strength. He wasn't the last link to hold the whole structure together.
These ideas developed slowly in Lloyd's exhausted mind. Slowly, he got stitched back up from the fragments of his previous self-image. This time, however, his new identity was not something that was given to him from the outside, in which he would have had to fit himself, but it was a solid, authentic self-image created as a result of self-reflection. It was still obscure, uncertain and seeking its form, and its growth was overshadowed by fear. But the conversation with his father drove away that last fear. The fear that Morro was supposed to be the Green Ninja instead of Lloyd. His father assured that Lloyd’s qi had no influence on how he should live and act. He should live the way his heart told him to.
In the end, although Morro managed to beat Lloyd one last time, this time he did not break down. He was more intact now, he had more inner strength, and he knew for sure he wouldn't be abandoned. That the fate of the world wasn't really up to him. He may have been part of the story, but after all, he wasn't the protagonist, at least not the only one of them.
