I love Tumblr because nothing matters here truly. There are no influencers. Having followers doesn’t mean anything. It’s just a site where people post their sporadic thoughts and rb pretty pictures. Anyone who thinks any of this matters is woefully missing the point

IMO: people's willingness to endanger the entire fanfiction ecosystem for their own personal gain is a direct result of capitalism being a dick
first it makes us think of EVERYTHING in terms of economics, "productivity" and money, money, money
then it makes us desperate to make ends meet (#eattherich)
and then side-hustle culture convinces us that our hobbies are worthless unless they're monetized
so the math adds up and desperate people look at their empty pantries and then at their time-consuming hobbies that pay them nothing, and it's no fucking wonder they start asking "hey, can i perhaps make a buck off of that hobby to soothe the misery of this financial hellscape somewhat?"
and i get the impulse, truly i do, but the problem with fanfic is that YOU CAN'T DO THAT
fic is a labor of love and i'm sorry but it's not the answer to our monetary problems, because those problems will get a lot worse for you if you wind up fined into oblivion over copyright infringement
enough people start turning fanfic into a black market instead of a grey one and we'll get chased back underground and then your nice little side-hustle goes up in smoke along with the entire fanfiction community as a whole
allow me to remind us that capitalism is a goddamn liar, side-hustle culture is a trap, and:
you are allowed to have a hobby that isn't profitable
hobbies are not worthless if they don't generate cash flow
turning your hobby into a side hustle often saps the joy out of it
try finding joy through the act of creating, not through the money you might make doing it
good luck out there

Okay, if I were writing a high school AU where the New Mutant + Gen X girls + Kitty and Rachel went to a private high school where they were required to do a sport, these are the sports they would each play:
Amara and Rahne run track. Amara does better on shorter sprints, while Rahne does better on middle-distance events. Amara is Rahne’s only friend on the track team, but she keeps dumping Rahne to hang out with Jenny’s clique of cool girls.
Dani, Rachel, Paige, and Jubilee are on the lacrosse team. I could’ve gone with basketball for this main team sport, but lacrosse is more aggressive (although girls’ lacrosse is a non-contact sport) and I thought that was suitable for a bunch of superheroes. Dani is team captain, of course, and is responsible for team building and strategy. Rachel is the star player whose arrogance and insistence on her own ability probably cost them a few games. Paige finds that lacrosse is a good way for her to channel her aggression, which she didn’t even really know she had. Jubilee is here only because she is required to play a sport. Her true love is parkour, which does not count as a sport in the eyes of the school.
Xuân is the school’s assistant librarian, and she has gotten roped into being the assistant lacrosse coach as well. This would be more fun for her if the head lacrosse coach were not Emma Frost.
Kitty does cheerleading. Stevie Hunter is the cheerleading coach.
Illyana and Monet are on the swim team. Illyana originally signed up for cheerleading to be with Kitty, but Stevie kicked her off the squad for picking fights and she had to join the swim team. Illyana and Monet are both suited for a sport that is a team sport but only kind of, and they get along well enough but never acknowledge each other’s existence outside of practices and meets.
