A very important person in my life received a cancer diagnosis recently. He will have chemo, surgery and more chemo. He will be fighting for his life. He us a big U of M (Michigan) fan. I decided he needed a quilt to take with him to his chemo and for napping. So I bought some fabric and made this top in 2 days. I adore this pattern and have made it several times now. It’s a free pattern by the Empty Bobbin Sewing Studio. It never disappoints! It’s with my quilter now. The backing I ordered won’t be to her until Monday so she will have to mail it to me to finish as I’ll be out of town. I had hoped to give it in person but don’t want to wait so will mail it to my friend.
I had LOTS of help as I was sewing it. Roary seems to think her job is to help with the piecing, lol.
I worked at U of M for almost 40 years. Their fight song is Hail to the Victors. I’m praying he is victorious in his fight! Would appreciate your prayers, good thoughts and positive healing energy 💙💛💙
Since I went to MSU(BIG) rivalry, he is one of the only people I would use these colors to make a quilt for!

It's almost official: the Murdoch Quilt, made from costume scraps from seasons 12-14 of Murdoch Mysteries (with a few pieces from earlier years), is going up for auction very soon! Bidding will close on not long after October 2, the date of the S17 premiere. I even managed to get a high-end art auction house involved. I had a Zoom call with them and the Shaftesbury Films publicity people this afternoon to finalize plans. (Yes I am freaking out about this.)
Christina Jennings, Founder, CEO, and President of Shaftesbury Films gave the quilt and the Urban Alliance on Race Relations, beneficiary of the auction proceeds, a shoutout in her speech to the crowd at the Shaftesbury TIFF party last Monday. (She suggested that someone's grandmother might like it. Me, I want it on permanent display somewhere. It's a work of women's art that was never intended to disappear into someone's linen closet. But that was, uh, not the ideal venue for pushing that argument. Ahem.)
Some of the "best" questions people have asked about the quilt:
How do we know it's authentic? Are you trying to scam people?
Seriously? You honestly think someone would come up with a scam involving the time and coordinated effort of 20 people in three countries to produce something that has fabrics that look EXACTLY like what's in the costumes on TV, in order to raise money for a 48-year-old anti-racism charity? That's... rather a grim way to perceive the world.
2. Why don't you sell the pattern so other quilters can make it too?
There is no pattern. 18 people designed and made their own unique blocks from the fabrics they had available. If you want to stare at pictures of it to reverse-engineer the 30 different blocks so you can make them from other fabrics that didn't come from the MM costume room, knock yourself out.
3. You're making another one, right?
No. This one took hundreds of dollars (gas, postage, longarm quilting) and at least 150 hours of work. "One of a kind" means "one of a kind."
(I have so many thoughts about how textile art is [or isn't] valued, and whom it's perceived to be for, even by people who really should know better. I'm hopeful that this project and the auction will spark some thoughts and conversations about this. Best case, the quilt itself will net five figures, maybe from one of the Bus People who've been on the fancy tours and who Get It about what this kind of fibre art is worth. I can dream, can't I?)
Anyway. Auction closes in early November! October 2! More details coming soon! aaaah!

I start handquilting tomorrow, and will make a separate post for it. However, I decided to...tease y'all with what to expect, especially my client. 😉
Four threads will be used, and each stenciled circle with be a singular color. This means there will be a whole lotta color going on.
Each of these colors are in the fabric collection I used. It's School of Magic by Cotton + Steel. Some parts of each print have iridescent bits and they are sooooo pretty.
I only have circles in the strip section. The rest will be straight lines along the sashing on the sides and the stars bordering the quilt. Two corners have strips; when I get to those, they will also have circles outlined.
Anyone else excited? I know I certainly am.
Handquilting will be no more than six hours every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Tuesday and Thursday will be spent making another quilt for a different client. Yes, there will be WIP pics. The fabric is beautiful! That collection is The Sun, The Moon, and The Stars by Jason Yenter for In the Beginning Fabrics. Look it up if you're impatient to see it. Here's the pattern I'll be using:
The pattern is Ripples Quilt from the pattern book called Curvy Log Cabin Quilts by Jean Ann Wright. This will be my first curvy quilt, and I bought the template ruler made specifically for these quilts. It's the larger template, and when I decide to make a quilt with smaller blocks, I'll get that template as well. They aren't cheap nor 100% necessary, but they will make this soooo much easier. Work smarter, not harder.
Now, time for bed. I have an early start seeing as I'm up at around 6AM voluntarily. Why? I'm a morning person and like having necessary tasks done by lunch. The rest of the day can be spent doing as I please.

Last Monday of the Week 2024-02-05
Busy week!
Listening: Caught the Laura Jane Grace pre-release for Hole In My Head, which has four songs so far. Here's "Dysphoria Hoodie"
Lyricism!
Also finally got around to Palisade on Friends at the Table. Different seasons of FATT have varying levels of contemporary relevance to their political moment but they sure did pick a moment to do a story about settler colonialism and the way origin and religion can be used to launder consent for open imperialism and colonialism huh. Here's a quote from a Road to Palisade episode from early 2022:
KENNETH MARIAN COLVER: Imperialism, colonialism, occupation: yeah, we hear it a lot, we hear it a lot. It’s ahistorical, it’s not—it’s a misunderstanding of what our relationship to this place, to these places. Now listen, listen—I will bet you—listen, I will bet you twelve, fifteen hundred, sixteen—I will bet you that anyone you know—your cousin, your brother’s cousin, anyone. I’ll bet with every single person in this room, if you turned to your neighbor, if you went to your neighbor’s door, you could knock and they would answer. And you could say, “Neighbor, where do we, where does the Divine Principality come from?” And they might say, “Well, we come from Kesh, and we come from Apostolos. And we come from…” And you could say, and you would say, not to be rude, but you could interrupt and say “No, neighbor, where do we come from? Where is our home?” And you know what they would say? They would say, the Twilight Mirage, of course! So, so… so how can it be colonialism? How can a man colonize his own home?
yeah. The season ended in December 2023.
Reading: Finished Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. Truly a remarkable work of literature, a bunch of things that you can't believe work as well as they do. The Cities can really stick in your head, especially since I read most of it while on the metro every morning and afternoon.
Watching: More Gundam, up to when the White Base makes it to Earth but is still on the run. Everyone is having such a terrible time.
Playing: More Dark Souls, I have made it to Quelaag but I've only gone at her once, it shouldn't be too hard.
youtube
Making: Finished writing the rough outline of my expression evaluator, but it's too slow. I think that's solvable I need to sit and remove all the clones.
Also: started quilting the seat cover my mother made and sent along with my brother when he came to visit. It's got a triangle-grid of circular patterns so I have a few options but I'm probably going to end up quilting every single sub-triangle, it looks nice that way.
Tools and Equipment: Properly sharp sharp needles make a huge difference especially when you're working with thick material. I had really crappy sharps that sucked to quilt with so I went out and found the same kind of needles I used to use back home and they're so much better. I do not know how to describe what a sharp needle is like, other than that the tip wants to embed itself in your skin at all times.

CRAFT NOTES: June 19th - 25th
Greetings! So, I got tired of posting small updates every single day so I am going to try to do a weekly round up of the projects that I am working on.
READING: A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas
WEDNESDAY: I managed to start my second sock and then I decided that I need to knit a fingering weight sweater with the yarn that I dyed the other day. It seriously couldn’t wait another day. 😂 Never mind the fact that it is currently over 90° F. I am knitting the Alberta Summer top by Sandra Buzza. It’s my first time knitting a sweater with a circular yolk.
THURSDAY: More progress on both projects.
FRIDAY & SATURDAY: I finished my 174th pair of socks (I will post the details soon) and I decided to knit a couple of yarn cozies with leftover scrap yarn. I love the red and blue one. It makes me think of a sock monkey for some reason. (the yarn cozies will have their own fo post too).
SUNDAY: I discovered that I made a pretty big mistake so I frogged the whole sweater project and then I started it over. I love the results so far.
MONDAY: New cast on day. I love the color combination. My rows on my sweater are getting really long. I only knit one row today.
TUESDAY: a small amount of progress on both projects and an ice tea because it’s hot.
CROSS STITCH: I spent about 5 hours working on this project this week while listening to audiobooks. It is slowly progressing.
SEWING: I have sewn up another 10 quilt blocks this week giving me approximately 40 more to sew. I’m not sure if they will all go into this quilt or the next one. The plan is to make one for each family member so there will be a few more after this one.

Happy nice ask day! What are some of your favorite quilt patterns?
Hello! I am so happy to tell you.
I really love the simple nine-patch pattern. It’s hard to mess up! You can vary it a bazillion ways. It’s a classic for a reason.
I also love (looking at) the traditional Sunbonnet Sue, but I don’t have a lot of interest in trying to make her. I have barely tried appliqué, but I can just tell it’s not the kind of thing I would enjoy doing.
Not that you asked, but I also love tiny blocks (or “postage stamp quilts”), 1930s reproduction fabrics, and paper piecing.
I’m kind of trying to do all of the above here with this paper piecing version of Sunbonnet Sue. Maybe alternating with the nine patch or maybe two separate but related quilts? I do not remember. This is as far as I have gotten and I haven’t picked it up in years:
What is nice ask day?

Tornado survivors recount flying debris, destroyed buildings (AP) With tornadoes hitting the Midwest and the South this weekend, some survivors said they emerged from their homes to find buildings ripped apart, vehicles tossed around like toys, shattered glass and felled trees. J.W. Spencer, 88, had never experienced a tornado before, but when he and his wife saw on TV that a tornado was nearing their town of Wynne, Arkansas, he opened a front window and rear door in his house to relieve air pressure. The couple scurried into the bathroom, where they got into the bathtub and covered themselves with quilts and blankets for protection. Fifteen minutes later, the storm unleashed its fury on the town nestled among the flat fields and fertile farmland of eastern Arkansas. Debris came whistling through their house. “We just rode it out,” Spencer said on Saturday. “We heard stuff falling, loud noises. And then it quit. It got quiet.” After it passed, the couple emerged to see devastation in the neighborhood. Many large trees were down, and numerous homes were damaged, especially near the high school, which had its roof shredded and windows blown out.
The US leads the world in weather catastrophes (AP) The United States is Earth’s punching bag for nasty weather. Blame geography for the U.S. getting hit by stronger, costlier, more varied and frequent extreme weather than anywhere on the planet, several experts said. Two oceans, the Gulf of Mexico, the Rocky Mountains, jutting peninsulas like Florida, clashing storm fronts and the jet stream combine to naturally brew the nastiest of weather. Then add climate change, and “buckle up. More extreme events are expected,” said Rick Spinrad, head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Tornadoes. Hurricanes. Flash floods. Droughts. Wildfires. Blizzards. Ice storms. Nor’easters. Lake-effect snow. Heat waves. Severe thunderstorms. Hail. Lightning. Atmospheric rivers. Derechos. Dust storms. Monsoons. Bomb cyclones. And the dreaded polar vortex. It starts with “where we are on the globe,” North Carolina state climatologist Kathie Dello said.
Intensity and insults rise as lawmakers debate debt ceiling (AP) Fights over increasing the nation’s borrowing authority have been contentious in Congress, yet follow a familiar pattern: Time and again, lawmakers found a way to step back from the brink before markets began to panic and the nation risked a dangerous default on its debt. But this year’s fight has a different feel, some lawmakers say. A new Republican majority in the House is itching for a spending showdown, and determined not to yield. They blame what they view as excessive federal spending for higher food and gasoline prices and the growing national debt. Led by Speaker Kevin McCarthy, they have ruled out passing a “clean” debt ceiling increase even as the White House insists such legislation be passed without conditions. It’s an impasse that shows no signs of easing ahead of this summer’s deadline for action.
Fatal fire complicates border city’s tensions with migrants (AP) When Irwing López made it to Ciudad Juarez on the U.S.-Mexico border in January, the 35-year-old construction worker thought he had survived the worst and was steps away from his goal. He’d traversed jungle and raging rivers, and evaded Mexico’s notorious cartels, traveling thousands of miles from his native Venezuela. But then he found himself in a purgatory between U.S. immigration policies that pushed him back to Mexico and the unrelenting pursuit of Mexican immigration agents. And on Monday, López was reminded just how fragile his situation is. His friend and fellow Venezuelan Samuel Marchena was detained by immigration agents and hours later became one of the 39 migrants who died in a fire at a detention center. López, who sleeps in a shelter and washes windshields at stoplights for cash, said he won’t give up trying to enter the U.S., but he recognizes he’s not welcome in this sprawling border city that has grown tired of migrants in its community.
Almost a third of Brazilians disapprove of Lula, poll shows (Reuters) Almost a third of Brazilians disapprove of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, putting the leftist leader at about the same level of unpopularity as his right-wing predecessor Jair Bolsonaro during the first three months of his presidency, a poll cited by the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo showed on Saturday. Lula, who took office in January after narrowly defeating Bolsonaro in an election last October, has the approval of 38% of Brazilians, with 29% disapproving of his performance, according to a Datafolha survey.
Thousands protest in Portugal over housing crisis (Reuters) Thousands of people took to the streets of Lisbon and other cities across Portugal on Saturday in protest against soaring rents and house prices at a time when high inflation is making it even tougher for people to make ends meet. Portugal is one of Western Europe’s poorest countries, with government data showing more than 50% of workers earned less than 1,000 euros ($1,084) per month last year. The monthly minimum wage is 760 euros. Rents in Lisbon, a tourist hotspot, have jumped 65% since 2015 and sale prices have sky-rocketed 137% in that period. The situation is particularly hard on the young. The average rent for a one-bedroom flat in Lisbon is around 1,350 euros, a study by housing portal Imovirtual showed. Low wages and high rents make Lisbon the world’s third-least viable city to live in, according to a study by insurance brokers CIA Landlords. Portugal’s current 8.2% inflation rate has exacerbated the problem.
Pope Francis leads Palm Sunday service, bounces back from illness (Reuters) Pope Francis led a Palm Sunday service the day after he was discharged from hospital following a bout of bronchitis, and urged the world to take better care of the poor, the lonely and the infirm. Thousands of people waved palm and olive branches as Francis was driven into St. Peter’s Square sitting in the back of a white, open-topped vehicle, before descending and starting the service. The pontiff, wearing red vestments, spoke with a quiet, but clear voice as he addressed a crowd of more than 30,000 faithful in weak spring sunshine. In his homily he called on people not to ignore those experiencing great suffering and solitude. “Today their numbers are legion. Entire peoples are exploited and abandoned; the poor live on our streets and we look the other way; migrants are no longer faces but numbers, prisoners are disowned; people written off as problems,” he said.
Russia-Ukraine war: Will there be a spring counteroffensive? (AP) Europe’s biggest armed conflict since World War II is poised to enter a new phase in the coming weeks. With no suggestion of a negotiated end to the 13 months of fighting between Russia and Ukraine, the Ukrainian defense minister said last week that a spring counteroffensive could begin as soon as April. But Russian forces are dug in deep, lying in wait behind minefields and along kilometers (miles) of trenches. But the Ukrainian military starts the season with an influx of powerful weapons. Germany said this week that it had delivered the 18 Leopard 2 tanks it promised to Ukraine. Poland, Canada and Norway have also handed over their pledged Leopard tanks. British Challenger tanks have arrived too. The new supplies, including howitzers, anti-tank weapons and 1 million rounds of artillery ammunition, will add more muscle to the Ukraine military and give it a bigger punch. A make-or-break period may lie ahead: If Kyiv fails to make progress on the battlefield with its Western-supplied weapons, allies may become reluctant to send it more of the expensive hardware.
Pakistan posts highest-ever annual inflation; stampedes for food kill 16 (Reuters) Consumer price inflation in Pakistan jumped to a record 35.37% in March from a year earlier, the statistics bureau said on Saturday, as at least 16 people were killed in stampedes for food aid. The March inflation number eclipsed February's 31.5%, the bureau said, as food, beverage and transport prices surged up to 50% year-on-year. Thousands of people have gathered at flour distribution centres set up across the country, some as part of a government-backed programme to ease the impact of inflation. At least 16 people, including five women and three children, have been killed in stampedes at such centres in recent days, police and officials have said. Thousands of bags of flour have also been looted from trucks and distribution points, according to official records.
China Draws Lessons From Russia’s Losses in Ukraine, and Its Gains (NYT) Thousands of miles from the cities that Russia is bombing in Ukraine, China has been studying the war. In an indirect struggle between two superpowers on the other side of the world, Beijing sees a source of invaluable lessons on weapons, troop power, intelligence and deterrence that can help it prepare for potential wars of its own. In particular, Chinese military analysts have scrutinized the fighting for innovations and tactics that could help in a possible clash over Taiwan, the island democracy that Beijing wants to absorb and the United States has at times pledged to defend. The war is a “proving ground,” they say, that gives China a chance to learn from successes and failures on both sides.
Heavy rain brings flash flooding to Sydney, prompts rescues (Reuters) Heavy rain brought flash flooding to Australia’s largest city Sydney on Sunday, prompting rescues and residents to sandbag houses, as authorities warned of bad weather ahead. Emergency authorities received 50 calls for assistance, mostly for sandbagging of properties and help plugging leaking roofs, from residents in Sydney, the capital of New South Wales state, due to Sunday’s deluge. It comes after Sydney in 2022 notched its wettest year in 164 years, as Australia’s east coast endured a rare third straight year of the La Nina weather phenomenon, associated with increased rain.
Iran’s chief justice says unveiled women will be prosecuted ‘without mercy’ (Guardian) Iran’s judiciary chief has threatened to prosecute “without mercy” women who appear in public unveiled, Iranian media reported on Saturday. Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei’s warning comes on the heels of an interior ministry statement on Thursday that reinforced the government’s mandatory hijab law. “Unveiling is tantamount to enmity with [our] values,” Ejei was quoted as saying by several news sites. Those “who commit such anomalous acts will be punished” and would be “prosecuted without mercy,” he said, without saying what the punishment would entail. A growing number of Iranian women have been ditching their veils since the death of a 22-year-old Kurdish woman in the custody of the “morality police” last September. Mahsa Amini had been detained for allegedly violating the hijab rule.
Israel’s ‘fired’ defence minister may yet keep his job (Reuters) Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant, whose dismissal by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu brought the country’s constitutional crisis to a boil this week, may still keep his job, two sources told Reuters. Aides said Gallant never received a formal dismissal letter from Netanyahu, who has since faced rare public censure from the United States over the justice drive. In a sign he was conducting business as usual on Thursday, Gallant’s office said he raised a Passover holiday toast with domestic security officials and distributed a photo of himself smiling at the event, where he said Israel’s security was at a “complex” point in time.

OSRR: 3721
today was a good day. very productive.
i was able to pick up the paperwork from my therapist so i had the original because she already sent a copy where it needed to go. mom and i stopped at lull farms and got some goodies and goodness for home and for me for the convention, and we stopped for lunch at mcnaldos.
there's a sign in the parking lot next to the mcnaldos. it says "please do not feed the birds." but birds gotta eat, and there's a lot of em, and i often don't follow rules if i think they're stupid.
so mom and i feed the pigeons frequently.
so frequently, apparently, that they know her car.
we pulled up and kind of them were around. a few minutes later, they were all flocked to the car. mom took handfuls of fries (please don't @ me i know fries are not good for birds but we ran out of birdseed) and yeeted them out the window for the pigeons. they enjoy the fries.
but some of them are not done. they want more fries. so they hop up on the car. on the hood, on the roof, on the side mirrors. mom feeds them fries specifically. they do not go away. more come.
one LANDS ON HER HAND. TWICE.
we're laughing the whole time. and eventually we drove to a different place to take some pictures. i hop out and take some photos of a really pretty tree and i go back to go around the car and.
the pigeons are there again.
they make space as i walk around the car, laughing all the while.
i get to my door and open it, and one decides to land on it. a second one approached from behind to take it out. observe.
highly entertaining.
i stopped laughing enough to get back in the car and for mom to start to move again.
but the pigeons.
they approached us again. from the front this time.
they SWARMED the car. the hood, the mirrors, the roof, the sides of the car.
we couldn't stop laughing.
the best part of all of this was the man in a pest control vehicle nearby who was wholeheartedly guffawing at the situation. it's definitely something he went back and told the people in the office.
we did our best. they continued to follow.
it was genuinely hilarious.
i fucking love pigeons.
anyway, when we got home, i sat down and went through the fabrics for the baby quilt i've been working on forever to find the backing i wanted and what i wanted to use for the binding.
i had success on both parts. so i took my fabric and came upstairs and went to town. i finished the top and my mom helped me cut strips for the binding and i matched the top and backing and pinned them and that's where i stopped.
i have had convention stuff to do for weeks.
and i finally did it today.
i made THIRTEEN perler bead patterns and fixed another.
i just need to print many copies of them and then have my crew pack the appropriate numbers of beads.
and in the evening between making pretend i had soup as earlier mom and i made chicken and rice soup.
it's good soup.
i'm excited. today was extremely productive.
and tomorrow concludes my time waiting to get to the convention. after going to joel's and helping pack the truck, we'll be going down and staying the night until sunday. which reminds me i want to change my doctor's appointment on monday to a later time.
but also i'm excited to spend some time with joel. i don't get to do that so often anymore. i miss the joel.

Here are this week's sewing projects:
For @ravenbara an 18 inch quilt top of a crow. The background is that light batik on the right, and the crow will be make with the green and brown prints on the left.
I made a mini quilt a couple years ago with this pattern, albeit significantly smaller. It was a tarot card interpretation and has gems hand-sewn to it.
For @mutantenfisch I've chosen three fabrics for the coasters. The star of the show is the floral, a blue blender-type print to make the blue flowers pop, and a brown wood print to balance them out. I'm not sharing the design yet. That's something I would rather reveal in stages, like most of the coasters I make.
My sewing room lighting is making the colors a little brighter than they are, but the second and third of this bunch are the most accurate.
I absolutely love that floral, and prints that look like things are a fun challenge for me. Wood prints are among my favorite to play with. When I make my *bookcase quilt, I'll be using a wood print to make it look like a bookcase.
I will likely have these done by the end of next week. My time is being split between sewing and handquilting. It's likely the projects here will be done next Monday or Tuesday. Then I'll start on the mug rug commission for @bloodofthepen. That'll wrap up all the small commissions unless I receive more before June 1st.
*I don't have a printer, and using the print shop is a lot of stress because the place is itty bitty and they don't have a printer set up to count the pages. On Fridays, it's $0.05/black & white page, but I have...so many things I wanna print. The library is $0.10/black & white page, but it'll be a lotta pages. One thing that's especially irritating about both is the paper quality. They use stuff that's way too high quality. The stuff I prefer is maybe two steps higher than newsprint. It needs to be 1) easy to cut and fold, and 2) easy to sew and tear. High quality stuff is more difficult to tear, tugging on the seams even when I set the stitch length to 1.4mm. Any smaller will result in other problems I don't wanna deal with again.
If anyone here wants to make me scream and dance with delight, I have a printer on my wishlist here. It comes highly recommended by a couple other quilters I know, and I'll be able to do soooooo much foundation paper piecing.

got hit with that autism + ptsd two punch combo (+ a little kick of the stealth transgender shame) and i also forgot that everything is going to be okay
went to my place of employment (i am not back to work til monday) (off for surgery recovery) for customer reasons (i needed a cashiers check and also to use the printer) (i needed to print off some quilt block patterns) (they’re little houses thank you for asking) And. my coworkers were excited to see me and one even asked if he could hug me & said he missed me (it was not weird in the context of his personality and our work friendship) (i did decline the hug because i hate being touched but i was emotionally touched at the offer) and everyone asked how i was & how it went & so on.
i have been sitting here consumed with dread about going back to work soon because i always convince myself that everyone hates me but that is simply not true !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! people like me and appreciate me and i am not a burden to be around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WEEK 2
Monday 29th January
Visit to the, Quilters Exhibition at The Mac Birmingham. ‘Material Evidence’ features work from current and former members from the group Quilt Art. A celebration of women that make art through stitching. Inspired by the life and work of Quilter Mary Fogg.
Fogg called her work "a celebration of cloth in all the wonderful variety available to us: colour, pattern, texture, flexibility, and the way it reflects light" macbirmingham.co.uk (2024).
Above are some images of the works and material that caught my eye.
