The Evolution of HR Technology: A Look at Modern HRMS
The landscape of human resource management has undergone a significant transformation over the years. From manual processes and paper records to sophisticated Human Resource Management Systems (HRMS), technology has revolutionized the way HR functions. Here's a look at how HR technology has evolved and why modern HRMS solutions are game-changers for businesses.
The Early Days of HR Technology
Initially, HR tasks were heavily dependent on manual processes. Payroll calculations, employee records, and recruitment were managed through spreadsheets and paper files. While this approach worked, it was time-consuming, prone to errors, and inefficient for scaling businesses.
The Rise of HR Software Solutions
In the 1990s, the introduction of basic HR software paved the way for automation in payroll, attendance tracking, and record-keeping. These systems significantly reduced administrative workload but were often standalone solutions, lacking integration and advanced functionality.
Modern HRMS: An All-in-One Solution
Today, HRMS represents a holistic approach to human resource management, combining multiple functionalities into a unified platform. These systems are designed to streamline and automate complex HR tasks, improve efficiency, and enhance the employee experience.
Key Features of Modern HRMS
Employee Data Management: Centralized storage of employee information for easy access and updates.
Payroll and Benefits Administration: Automation of salary processing, tax calculations, and benefits management.
Recruitment and Onboarding: Tools for posting job ads, tracking candidates, and onboarding new hires seamlessly.
Performance Management: Advanced analytics for tracking employee performance and setting development goals.
Employee Self-Service Portals: Empowering employees to manage their own leave, attendance, and personal details.
Compliance Tracking: Ensuring adherence to labor laws and regulations with minimal manual effort.
Integration with Other Tools: Compatibility with third-party applications for enhanced functionality.
Benefits of Modern HRMS
Efficiency and Productivity: Automation reduces repetitive tasks, freeing up HR professionals for strategic planning.
Data-Driven Decision Making: Advanced analytics provide insights into workforce trends and performance metrics.
Improved Employee Engagement: Self-service features and streamlined processes enhance employee satisfaction.
Scalability: Modern HRMS platforms are designed to grow with the organization, making them ideal for businesses of all sizes.
Future Trends in HR Technology
As technology continues to evolve, HRMS is expected to integrate more advanced features, such as:
Artificial Intelligence (AI): Predictive analytics for hiring, retention, and employee development.
Mobile-First Solutions: Ensuring accessibility on the go.
Enhanced Employee Wellness Tools: Integrating mental health and wellness tracking into HR systems.
Conclusion
The evolution of HR technology from manual processes to modern HRMS has been a transformative journey. Today’s HRMS solutions empower organizations to manage their workforce efficiently while fostering a better workplace environment. Investing in the right HRMS is not just a technological upgrade—it’s a strategic move towards building a smarter and more agile organization.

There;s old world rigs and rigs used for modern non-military stuff, how much active manufacture and development of rigs is there? Is it mostly craft manufacture and refitting family heirlooms, or are there some factories out there making fresh rigs?
Rig technology was rediscovered from fabricator blueprints in the Teleths.
The most common type of rig manufacturing in Septentrias is generally shop manufacturing similar to a shipyard. Manufacturing a single rig generally takes a team of experts and laborers, similar to a medieval blacksmith shop forging suits of armor, or boatwrights making ships.
Maintaining a rig is much easier. Most rig blueprints were designed with mass produced, replaceable components in mind, which aids in repairability. A single worker can keep a rig maintained for quite a long time.
Basically, if a town is large enough to have a militia or state armed force, it's gonna have a local rig shop you can take your rig into for repairs.
New rigs are FAR less advanced than ancient tech rigs. If Kali's HR&R Pauldron is a steam locomotive, the EXO white is a modern Abrams tank.
This is partially because the technology is still highly advanced, and partially because old rig technology is built to resist types of weapons that flat out don't exist anymore. It would be like a medieval knight finding a kevlar tactical vest. Like nice plastic shirt asshole I have a zweihander. For example: The EXO White has a complex system for defending against directed gamma radiation weapons that is completely useless against getting run over by a steam locomotive.

The Bad Batch and their jobs (Modern AU)
In my headcanon they all started out as soldiers. After getting out and accidentally acquisiting Omega, they desperately need money and take any jobs they can get. Eventually, everyone finds something they actually like.
Hunter:
Retail sales associate aka Walmart slave and getting yelled at by Karens all day. He's also doing freelance cleaning jobs, the grosser the better the payment. Think hoarder apartments with fifty cats or scat orgy hotel room cleanup.
He works hard on getting his record cleaned up and eventually secures a job at the fire station. He becomes a firefighter and will eventually be a lieutenant and later captain.
Tech:
Fast food worker which means lots of being yelled at by hangry people who are unhappy with the way their BigMac was stacked. He takes any extra shift he can get.
After several failed rounds of applications, he hacks into a big company's system and puts his name on top of the candidate list. He ends up supervisor for some bank insurance IT stuff with lots of numbers.
Wrecker: Miner. It's hard work and long hours in the dark. He actually earns the most of all of them but that's because it's fucking dangerous and depressing.
The leading instructor for the demolition expert trainees blows up. Wrecker, having had professional training in the military and lots of experience at not getting blown up (again), is their best take so he becomes their new instructor for the new hires.
Crosshair: Nobody is really willing to hire him so he's an unlicensed taxi driver most nights. (He hates everything about it.) He also signed up as a freelance roadkill collector job in Hunter's name and takes the calls when he doesn't have passengers.
He meets railroaders when cleaning up railkill one night. When smoking he mentions how much he hates being a taxi driver and the railroaders recruit him for their company. He becomes a traindriver and finally doesn't have to interact with his passengers.
Echo: They call it online sales associate marketer and customer service advisor. He calls it tele-scam-marketer. Many people yelling at him but at least he can work from home.
At a parent-teacher conference of Omega's school he helps another parent with a technology problem. He's like: "I tried to get rid of that problem for hours and you did it within five minutes. You gotta be a master software engineer." and Echo's like "I get payed to get yelled at as a telemarketer". Turns out the guy is an HR associate at an IT company and gets Echo a proper job.

hey so like if Union has way more worlds than Karrakis does why is Union dependent on your resources? Why doesn’t the UEB just substitute the resource production and have the DoJ/HR just move in and wipe out your little caste system, since your Navy uses battleships that are, canonically, hot wet piles of industrial waste?
Union is, politically, an utter disaster, a mass of squabbling children. Yes, she is large - but size is not power. The resource question, in the modern age, is not a question of access or quantity (there are plenty of uninhabited and uninhabitable systems to go around, of course) but of extraction. In matters of extraction, nine systems, well-populated and well-equipped to the task, can be the equal of dozens of systems peopled by squabbling nation-states or scattered colonies. Union's Core is unequal to the task of large-scale resource extraction because of the libertine "culture" of idle luxury in which their populace languishes.
Regarding the question of why Union does not crush us, it is obvious - their system of 'Auxilia,' born of the inability of their body politic to exert control over its own limbs, makes it impossible for them to create a fleet equal to the Baronic fleet. Does any of its member states wish to be the first to be crushed against us? No! As Union cannot organize a unitary navy worth a damn, they must rely on the goodwill of their member states, most of whom see some half-hearted ideal of absolute democracy as no reason to waste their blood and sweat upon the Karrakin Trade Baronies, with the exception of the so-called Purview.
Finally, I assure you, our Navy is the best in the galaxy entire. I pray that you may retain your ignorance. Good day, sir!

Spoblins - Day 5 taznc
It's day 5 of @taznovembercelebration and my prompt card was "Modern with Magic AU" - this one gets mildly horny so be warned.
You can read yesterday's prompt here.
--
Kravitz loved his job, working with Barry on the development was great and he always enjoyed the puzzle of putting a game together. His favourite bit though, the very best bit, was magic resistance testing days. Only because it was important to make sure his product was robust, obviously. It would be terrible, truly terrible, if anyone were able to use magic to cheat the system. It was pure coincidence that Taako was also exactly his type... and smart... and funny... and handsome… and flirty.
"Hail and well met, bones." Taako salutes as he enters the room. The nickname started after Taako realised Kravitz’s tag was ‘the reaper.’ "I hear you've got another game for Taako to break."
"This one has space goblins." Says Kravitz, pulling out the chair for Taako.
"Spoblins." They say in tandem as Taako plunks down into it, sideways, of course. The man was incapable of following any rules, even the sitting ones, it was probably why he got a job that involves breaking them.
"Taako's been rubbing off on you."
Kravitz wishes more than anything he would. "Uh huh." He can't trust himself to say anything else, not after <i>The Incident</i> last time. Thankfully Taako had laughed it off when Kravitz asked him out and immediately backtracked to pretend it was a <i>work date</i> he was asking Taako on, a normal and regular thing that people do.
Taako settles in further, clicks a few buttons and begins to watch the opening sequence. "Are you just gonna watch, handsome? Leave poor Taako to play with himself?" Taako pouts and turns his big beautiful eyes to Kravitz.
"I can play with you if you'd like… I mean... Shit... Er..." Taako was going to call HR, Kravitz was going to have to go to so many meetings about this and ‘he’s really hot, just look at him’ is absolutely not a credible defence.
"I'd love it if you would." Taako winks and nudges the controller his way. "It's always more fun with a skilled partner."
Kravitz's cheeks are aflame, he's burning, he's simmering in his skin, maybe he should take his shirt off? Then he’d be cooler. He isn’t wearing anything else underneath, but that could help? Maybe Taako would appreciate it? Instead of frantically stripping, bearing his chest and hoping Taako thinks he’s handsome, he nods his head. Taako smiles and Kravitz manages not to propose, he grabs the controller instead of Taako's hand and fiddles with the joystick. It hadn't always been this bad, he swears that the first few times he was normal, but then Taako started flirting and Kravitz started flirting back, and then he panicked about it. Now they were stuck in a weird stalemate where Kravitz tried not to be inappropriate, tried to keep things colleague focused. It was hard. It was <i>so</i> hard. Especially when Taako was looking at him like this. <i> Really looking</i>.
Taako smiled wide and hungry. “You can fiddle with my joystick too, if you’d like.”
Kravitz definitely shouldn’t reach out and place his finger on Taako’s joystick. He definitely shouldn’t make intense eye contact. He really shouldn’t make slow circles and ask, “like this?”
“That’s pretty good… but try this.” Taako covers Kravitz’s hand with his own, and he’s so warm, so soft. Taako’s finger rests on Kravitz’s, presses down, light and insistent.
Gods. He’s going to get fired so fast. “Taako…” Is all the protest he manages to get out.
“That’s my name, stud.” How was he so calm? How was he so confident?
“We should…”
“We sure should. Cha’boy’s been coming onto your for months, I was starting to think you weren’t interested.”
“Work.” Kravitz croaks. Self control hanging by a swiftly fraying thread.
“Taako can multi-task.”
Taako simply cannot be proposing that they get nasty at work while he tries to break Kravitz’s videogame.
“We’ll get fired."
“Worth it.” Taako doesn’t look even the slightest bit phased.
“No one else is going to pay me to make space goblins.”
“Counterpoint, you could be goblin’ these nu…”
“No. No! Taako! You absolutely cannot finish that sentence.”
“I’d like to finish on…”
“No!”
“No?”
“Not right now!” Kravitz pauses. “Later?”
“My place?”
“I’d like to take you to dinner first.”
“I’d like you to take me to dinner after.”
“Deal.” This can’t be real.
“Excellent. Let’s murder some spoblins, we’ve got big plans tonight.” Taako grabs his controller back and hits a few buttons, there’s a shower of sparks on the screen and the main character turns into a two horned unicorn. “You left that one in on purpose!” Taako accuses.
“I know how much you love Garyl, and who else is going to try it?” Kravitz repositions his own controller and tries not to focus on the dopey smile on Taako’s face.
This can’t be over fast enough.
Find the next prompt here.

To Combat Misinformation Online, the Media Should Lie More... with Some Conditions
Okay, stay with me here. I know this sounds counter-intuitive, but I think I have something here. This is all based on personal anecdotes, so until there's an actual study out, do not take this as word. Read more under the cut:
So, a few years back, I worked for a college that implemented an anti-phishing training module to our email system. It worked pretty simply. A fake email would be sent out that looked legitimate, save for a few flaws. Just a few little flaws, like a link to our HR system, but with an "a" changed to an "o" somewhere in the link. Or, a few words misspelled in the email. Maybe something with a little more urgency than usual. Subtle things. I always thought myself to be pretty safe on the internet, I knew I wasn't as dumb as my parents before me to fall for these types of scams.
That is, until one day, I clicked one.
There was a little box to input your email and password. Looked identical to the HR login I normally saw. But when I clicked "Login", it took me to a page showing me all the flaws in the email I just fell for. If this were real, I could have lost so much more. But, instead, I learned. I tripped and fell, but I had my kneepads on. I felt embarrassed to fall for it, but, you know what? I hadn't fallen for an email like it since.
In fact, I've been even a little overly-cautious. On a few occasions, I've had to reach out to someone on HR personally to ask them if the email was from them. A few times the answer was "yes", but there were some occasional no's. It was better to ask than to feel gullible again.
I learned. And I learned fast. In some ways, April Fools day is a great example of this sensation. See one weird thing on the internet in the Spring, and you'll be checking your calendar. The Onion is another good example, with plenty of people "biting the onion" as the subreddit goes. We need more of this. We need more people getting things wrong and learning how to avoid it in the future.
So, here's my proposal:
News sites start slipping in a fake article here and there. When you click to read more or go to share a link with other people, the article will tell you at the end that it was made up in big bold letters. It will show you what was suspicious about the article and what to look out for next time. The embed for the link will tell everyone you shared it with that you fell for fake news.
Soon, people will be forced to be more skeptical of information on the web. People will be more willing to fact-check before posting something in fear of learning that the news media just made it up. Shame is a great learning tool, and we should be using it more.
Sites like Ground News boast that they stop the spread of misinformation by presenting both sides of an article, but I don't think this solves the issue. It just makes people reliant on another source to give them the facts. It doesn't train people to think critically and spot lies when things are "too good to be true".
Can this idea be weaponized? Absolutely. It isn't the perfect plan by any means. However, I think it can at least help to improve media literacy in this modern age of AI hallucinations and malicious misinformation.
And if that means making every day April Fools Day, I'm all for it.

any rpgs with a corporate/modern office theme? not like liminal backrooms stuff, though a fantasy/magical realist setting is ok
Hello friend, here's a few games to flip through. They run the gamut in terms of rules, but they're all relatively quick reads!
Cubicles and Copiers, by americanspaceprince.
Cubicles & Copiers takes you to the dangerous world of white-collar office work. With an absent HR department, this is your chance to bring down the B-Liev Corporation from the inside. Beware the machinations of your boss, whose malice is only countered by their incompetence. See if you can get the sentient copier on your side before it all goes down.
This game is powered by Push, which means that it will provide you with a number of prompts that you will put together as a group to create your characters and your story. The system has a core mechanic of rolling a single dice with the idea that a 5 or 6 is a strong hit, while a 4 or lower is a weak hit. If you roll low, you can then choose to push your luck by rolling a second dice and adding it to your total. However, if you roll a 7 or higher, you miss entirely. The system prioritizes the potential for drama rather than a statistical layout.
If you like stringing a story together using bits and pieces of inspiration, rather than pulling pieces of lore from an established setting, this might be worth checking out!
Business Goons, by Unknown Dungeon.
Business Goons is an adventure game of office exploits and boardroom battles, all on one side of a business card. Will you succeed in closing deals and selling out to climb the corporate ladder, or will you get fired?
A business game that can fit on a business card, this game is inspired by Tunnel Goons, and equally light and quick game. You’ll have an abstract sort of “health” that you might lose when you wager your reputation. Lose too much and you’re fired!
This kind of game is an interesting exercise in how succinct one can make a game’s rules. Looking at this kind of game, I’d more likely use it in conjunction with other rules, in a more fleshed-out setting, but it’s an interesting twist on using rules that were originally for a fantasy game, and putting them in a corporate office!
Skel-IT-ons, by Nevyn Holmes.
If you have to ask why you’re playing as skeletons and nobody’s noticed, well, you must not have worked in IT before.
A game of Skel-IT-onstakes place during the course of a regular, totally normal 8-hour work day in the life of an Information Technology professional. Players work through the day by the Hour, each of which works as a round, and try to solve (or pretend to solve) computer problems.
While it's a game about the lives of those who work in IT, you don’t need to have tech support experience to play! If you’ve worked in IT before, sure, bring some of that in- but remember, this is a game about having fun and a whole butt-load of “yes, and” for everyone.
This is a mash-up of Lasers & Feelings and Honey Heist, two amazing short games that use just two stats and usually create some funky characters. You’ll have both an IT specialty and a special Skeleton power, which you’ll use in the day’s efforts to solve the most recent crisis, while also trying to complete your own, secret goal (such as stealing the potted plant from the lobby). A perfect mix of mundane and magic.
Games I've Recommended in the Past
(if you really want to add a little bit of horror)
External Containment Bureau, by Mythic Gazetteer.
The Modern Eldritch, by Moondog Gaming Press.

IkePri w/in historical European borders—why it works and doesn’t work at the same time
as someone with a history degree studying early modern Europe, i’ve absolutely snowballed on this one…it all started with the italian ass sounding names from Benitoite—which is what makes the accuracy of this so impossible.
Benitoite, when compared to the 1648 map (first modern borders in Europe, chosen specifically for the separate Italian kingdoms), matches with the Venetian territory.
Jadeite, following suit, falls into French territory (Swiss/French/German) based off of Benitoite’s location.
Obsidian is to the NE of Rhodolite and Benitoite, making it line up w/ Austria and what will later be known as the Austro-Hungarian Empire. it’s believed that as Obsidian’s expansion continued, it most likely pushed into Slavic land to the east.
This makes Rhodolite the HRE/Holy Roman Empire by default.
THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THIS LIST IS ACCURATE IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM.
based on the compass provided in the original map’s top right corner, it might mean that the map is loosely based off of these countries/only take influence from specific countries or nations. that being said, there are a few things that line up quite nicely about each country and their assigned locations.
obviously, Benitoite introduces incredibly italian sounding names such as (i.e. the last name, ricci, the first names of all princes, silvio, valerio, emidio/emilio)
Benitoite is frequently mentioned to be teeming with merchants, comparable to Venetians
Jade is a relatively peaceful country w/ many agreements—similar to Switzerland during the early modern period
the HRE is made up of different principalities rules by princes—similar to the system in which each Rhodolite prince rules his own land
the HR emperor is also elected, which becomes simplified to election via Belle in ikepri
the Austrians, particularly Hapsburg, liked to marry Germans when other Hapsburgs weren’t available…making Yves’s birth and abandonment by Obsidian a possibility to think over
of course, there are also reasons why this doesn’t make sense
little is known about Obsidian past their brutal history/actions—hard to compare to a real country
again, i had to turn the official map off of its original axis to line them up
the HRE is not a kingdom, it’s an empire…therefore, it would not be an elected KING like Rhodolite
where are the Swiss Alps? if we’re comparing maps, there obviously needs to be a mountain range between Benitoite and Jade
the same goes for the mountain range presented between Benitoite and Obsidian—geographic discrepancies
something you might’ve noticed (or maybe not)
all of these countries are named after stones/gemstones
Rhodolite — a reddish colored gemstone, only European natural source can be found in Norway
Benitoite — rare mineral, blue to light blue in color…not found in Europe, but can be found in Japan
Jade — a green mineral often used in jewelry or accessories, majorly exported by Myanmar
Obsidian — a dark colored stone, forms with cooling volcanic lava…which means it forms wherever there is/has been volcanoes. this does include Hungary and Italy.
Knowing the background behind the names can also throw a wrench in trying to fit ikepri lore into European boundaries.
while it is easy to see the European influence behind the lore and kingdoms, it is also evident that these fictional kingdoms are only loosely based on specific aspects of life within Europe in order to justify the style of royalty within the game.
thanks for coming to my tedtalk

just finished watching that 2 hr colin ross lecture about DID and it was so good. i had no idea schizophrenia used to encompass DID when it was coined, but it makes so much sense with the name "split mind" and why people mix them up all the time and also why we were suspected to be psychotic at first. it's just scary that modern psychiatrists still can't tell the difference. we really recognised the struggle of "not fitting in any diagnostic box" (what multiple doctors have told us) because our symptoms seem kinda psychotic at first glance if you don't know much about traumatology
it's really wild hearing someone describe a patient with DID and relating so much to it, when you're used to being told by doctors in your life that you're such a weird case and maybe you have thing unique disorder that hasn't been described in literature yet. it's scary because DID is so common compared to what doctors suspect. i have very clear symptoms of being traumatised, i openly tell them i have complex childhood trauma, yet they think i can't have a trauma disorder or at most they might say bpd. i'm so obviously fragmented!! there's a reason i was all over the place symptom-wise when i was hospitalised for depression!!! some days i seemed not depressed and other days i almost killed myself because i'm dissociative!! like i didn't know back then either, but doctors should have noticed. they should have screened me for dissociative symptoms!!! they should do that with all patients, especially when they are fucking hospitalised!!!
i have switched to child alters in front of my psychologist before and she just wanted to see me "do that voice again" while i was so fucking scared because i didn't know what was going on. i know she probably said it to see if it was voluntary that i could change my voice, but it felt so humiliating and like i was a circus freak the way she asked. like she already knew it wasn't voluntary and it was a response to being triggered in therapy because we talked about my childhood trauma!!! she'd said she knew it was an automatic reaction i had to being triggered, still she said i didn't have "real flashbacks" so i didn't have ptsd and it was all just bipolar, which it turns out i don't even have!!!! lol she ended up giving up on me and passing me on to some other therapist, but man... she made me almost kms so many times lol i know she didn't mean to, but she was so fucking bad at her job imho
it was so fucking funny to have entered the clinic in 2018 with my own personal suspicious being that i have cptsd, then getting told no i don't until late 2023 where my 2nd therapist asks me if i know about cptsd and that i seem to have it BITCH I KNOW LMFAO I'VE KNOWN FOR YEARS BUT YALL GASLIGHTED ME INTO THINKING I COULDN'T HAVE IT AND TOLD ME I WAS PSYCHOTIC AND NEEDED ANTIPSYCHOTICS, ANTIDEPRESSANTS AND MOOD STABILIZERS AND DIDN'T LISTEN WHEN NONE OF IT WORKED!!!!!
man.... and now im waiting like 69 weeks for my next psychiatrist bc i gave up on that shit clinic, who didn't want to transfer me to their trauma department because i didn't have war or service related trauma..... even though i found out they also treat other cases than that............ this system is a fucking joke. also the 69 weeks is not for a specialist, this was just the quickest i can see a psychiatrist without trying to kms and being involuntarily hospitalised. i'm just gonna see some normal psychiatrist and idk if she even believes in DID bc i didn't get to talk with her, only her secretary. so maybe when that year and three months have passed i find out she only knows how to diagnose anxiety and depression <333 or maybe she's homophobic or transphobic, bc that's something i've also experienced! <3333333
man.... i was brutally abused by my family and neglected by the system since before i was born and now im just.... stuck here with an illness there's a cure for, but with no access to it!!!! and it's not like i haven't tried getting help - i've been in and out of psych treatment from age 14-27!!! i've read up on shit myself bc here doctors just say "idk take this pill and stfu, hysteric woman" like i've been misdiagnosed so many times now.... at least im almost off all of my psych meds now! like they are good for some, but i was literally just fed pills for shit i didn't have and when i wasn't feeling better, they just upped the dose and told me i'd be more unstable without it when this doctor had never seen me without it and i've been on it for like a decade, still super unstable <3
long rant/vent lol but idk man it's just nice getting some of this out of my system

But What Is A Season Anyway
[ listen to the article with the YouTube video above ]
A week ago, a friend and I were discussing the upcoming seasons of Hazbin Hotel. o( ❛ᴗ❛ )o They mentioned that Hazbin was planned to be 4 seasons in total; while I understood this, I felt confused. For the longest time, I had trouble reconciling the old broadcast method of distribution with the current area of streaming releases, particularly when it comes to runtime. ( ̄ヘ ̄) Hazbin’s first season, with each episode 23 minutes long, only contains 8 episodes. Compared to a normal broadcast television order of 20-26 episodes at 23 mins each, this season is effectively ~⅓ of a broadcast season - that begs further questions: for season 2-4 of Hazbin’s release, what does runtime look like? How many episodes will there be? Will the length of each episode change? (¯ . ¯٥)
Vivienne, additionally, mentions her show in comparison to Bojack Horseman, and mentions that having 6 seasons, like Bojack, would be desirable (https://collider.com/hazbin-hotel-how-many-seasons-vivienne-medrano/)
But while Bojack’s episode lengths are comparable to Hazbin’s (25 mins for Bojack vs. 23 mins for Hazbin), Bojack’s seasons are 12 episodes long, with the final season being 16 episodes, which is ⅓ to ½ longer than the 8 episodes of season 1 of Hazbin. Suffice to say, a metric of an “episode” and a “season” might not be sufficient anymore to compare series.
Let me be clear, I still love the distinction of episodes and seasons! (´꒳`)♡ I love the breakup of each story piece into separate episodes and having larger arcs being broken up into seasons - in my opinion it makes things feel very cohesive and much more palatable - however, with streaming variation in episode distribution, it is becoming harder and harder for me to easily recognize how long a series is! (>﹏<)
I personally don’t believe the solution is to return to standard broadcast standards though. One of my favorite sci-fi series, Pantheon, has 2 seasons at 8 episodes each, but around 45 mins per episode - the episode length heavily contributes to the thriller aesthetic of the show and I love it! I simply want a better way to understand how long a series actually is.
But Claire, why don’t we simply use total runtime in [X]hrs [Y]mins?
In my opinion, a measurement system should give easy access to necessary information; it should be easily readable at a glance. In my opinion, runtime represented in [X]hrs [Y]mins is a wonderful method for describing shorter form media - like movies. Since the runtime of movies never fluctuates that greatly (at least in mainstream movie releases), most movies you see are never shorter than 1hr 20mins or longer than 3hrs 30mins (these are approximations of course but help get the point across). But for series, some are much smaller - City of Ghosts at 1hr 51mins total - and some are much longer - 58hr 12mins for all of Adventure Time - how should the runtime of series be measured then?
One could make something complex, like a logarithmic runtime measurement system or something more fancy, but in my opinion all we need is a scaling of runtime data.
Introducing: Series Measurement Units (SMU)
creative i know haha
Here's what they mean:
1 Series Measurement Unit = 6 hrs of show runtime
So, City of Ghosts, instead of 1hr 51mins, would be 0.3 SMU, while Adventure Time would be 9.7 SMU.
Now from those examples, that doesn’t seem to help much, but to be honest I did pick one of the shortest series I could find and one of the longest I could find to accentuate my argument. Here’s a distribution of 32 mostly modern series and their SMU lengths to better illustrate this:
This makes it clear that City of Ghosts and Adventure Time are more outliers actually, but there is still a wide variance of show runtimes from shorter to longer running shows.
This also makes it much easier to compare broadcast and streaming shows on the same playing field.
For example, here’s a comparison of several longer-length series:
Several of these series are broadcast (ATLA, Amphibia) and several are streaming (Hilda, Castlevania, Pantheon), and their season counts vary from 2-4, but once their SMU are put side by side the comparison becomes much easier.
And what about much longer series? I still feel it holds fairly well:
For example, it is fairly difficult from a season/episode basis to compare Steven Universe, Bojack and FMAB - Steven Universe has 5 seasons but season 1 is double the length of the rest and each episode is 11 mins long - Bojack has 6 seasons at more regular broadcast length, but only 12-16 episodes per season, and FMAB isn’t usually split into discrete seasons, simply having 64 episodes each at 23 mins.
Also, in addition to comparison, I wanted to make something that feels better when talking about series lengths, if that makes sense. If I mentioned City of Ghosts was 1hr 51mins long, that length wouldn’t feel very short, because our minds would associate 1hr 51mins with a movie’s runtime, but City of Ghosts isn’t structured like a movie, and so when watching, it feels like a much shorter series. So, if you talk about City of Ghosts being 0.3 SMU, where Neon Genesis Evangelion is 1.7 SMU and Amphibia is 3.7 SMU - City of Ghosts now feels appropriately small.
Additionally, this helps when total runtimes become larger:
Amphibia having a runtime of 21hrs 54mins feels very large (that’s almost a whole day!), but in the context of other series Amphibia is actually more reasonable in size, so saying Amphibia is 3.7 SMU feels better, in my opinion.
Now, I do have to address something before I continue: I don’t want to indicate that a series with a higher SMU (a higher runtime) is better - just because One Piece has an SMU 50x most of the series on this list doesn’t inherently make it better or more worthy of praise (it’s 74.5 as of August 20th, 2024 - it’s not included on the graphs because it would blow everything else out of proportion (٥⁀ ▽ ⁀ ) ) - in my opinion different series concentrations provide different experiences. Though Arcane is 1.0 SMU, I would never want to change Arcane’s runtime, because a tightened, more concentrated experience is what Arcane is going for - and I believe it does this very well.
I simply want to create a tool to more accurately compare the lengths of series.
Additionally, this has the added benefit of making it harder to obfuscate runtime with different series/episode splits. E.g. Inside Job (one of my favorite series) technically has 2 seasons on Netflix, but it’s SMU is actually less than most broadcast shows with only 1 season (Cowboy Bebop at 1.8 SMU and Delicious in Dungeon at 1.7 SMU for example) - which, after watching the series, feels more accurate.
Also, The Owl House, and Amphibia, both of which have 3 seasons and were both on broadcast television, show their actual difference in runtime - The Owl House is at 2.9 SMU and Amphibia at 3.7 SMU, the difference of .8 SMU because of Owl House’s shortened 3rd season, which is reflected in the runtime.
In summary, I’ll probably start talking about series runtime in this context because I love useful measurement systems - feel free to update or change this though! I want this to be as useful as possible - and if a different scaling factor or something different or a new system would work better I’m totally on board.
Here’s a link to my research Google Sheet, where I include where I got the data and my math and everything:
Thanks for reading!
Best regards,
Claire

save me.... I'm thinking about my goofy puyo x monhun au again..... (disclaimer: I have only played Rise/Sunbreak, GU (still in HR) and World (got to MR before my TV 💥)
EDIT ‼️‼️‼️ this thing got so LONG I'm just putting the entire thing under a "read more" because previously it was at the "characters" section but Jesus it looks so LONG on tablet I am so so SO sorry
nawr it's getting so bad I've been thinking about the TOWNS/VILLAGES now....
Primp (and Grimp, if we want to include Chronicle in all of this) would obviously become a village (Primp/Grimp Village oh how original you are Goose [not that I can come up with any better NAMES okay])
Not... sure about Suzuran.... Yeah it's a city, but MH doesn't have any modern or super technologically advanced civilizations (that are still around, anyway.) Something inbetween a kingdom and a village like. A Town. yeah. I don't know why the idea of a Town™️ seems so farfetched to me when Kingdoms Exist like does Sunbreak and the idea of Schrade (rip) not exist to me ????
Aahh,,, I really need to read up on the villages of the other MH games. Maybe that will help me get a feel for how I want Suzuran to be. Definitely much bigger than Primp or any regular village in GU/Rise, that's what I'll say. (Then again, the hubs don't give me a good feel of their true size. I need CONCEPT ART TO SAVE ME!!!!)
As for the Madou cast... instead of straight up being from another world, I think they'd just be from a distant village (or villages). I'm not TOO familiar with Arle's world, but that's the excuse I'm using! Same applies with Suzuran, and where Lemres, Feli, and Klug originate from. Comically far village! Though... this mainly stems from Primp Village being... prrreetty far away from other civilizations in general (stealing this from some HC that I saw where Primp is far from other towns, basically remote [unless that was already canon]).
As for the residents of the Tetra... well they uh. They live on a spaceship in the games. So, in the AU I'll just make them a traveling group of Hunters (sorta like mercenaries???? but for monsters duh) that go from village to village and help out with any particularly tough monster-related issues. Sorry, that's the best I can come up with...
Small tangent, is it weird I still want magic to be a thing in this AU? Despite the fact that none exists in MH- (Elders can do some goofy stuff, but it's usually from some special organs they possess/bioenergy crud [see: Ibushi and Narwa being able to float due to manipulation of the wind (Ibushi) and something akin to... magnetism, was it? Augh I KNOW it involves the thundersacs and electricity but I haven't played Rise in a fair bit])
Then again, it's an AU and I can technically do whatever I want..... bleh, they don't rely on it TOO much okay but perhaps the residents of Primp (and their neighbors) happen to have some... special powers that give them an edge in hunts and everyday life. I have no idea if I still wanna include Puyo themselves in this. Ehh.... I'll get to that eventually..... oughghjhjjdiskksiskj can you tell this is the most brainpower I've ever put into anything ever?
Oh god, this is becoming long. Too bad, I don't feel like stopping... I'll go onto some ideas for characters that I have... (aka The Trio™️)
Amitie: aw yeah!!! I kinda want her to be the focus in this AU? ahem. I think I want her to use a Sword and Shield, and as for her Hunter Rank I imagine her to be around Low-Early High Rank (4 stars?). I might have to make my own monster rank/difficulty chart for this AU, as there are some monsters I kinda feel are too dangerous for Low Ranks to take on? (see: Elders being in LOW RANK in GU for some ungodly reason, WHY WHY WHY ARE THEY THERE?! [not a complaint, just super hilarious, obviously i'm not taking that as "ooooohh canonically a LR hunter can fight Teostra" just a haha silly thought]) Probably basing it more on Rise/Gu's system works instead of World. Low Rank literally has its own storyline there! (Which obviously is expanded upon in High and probably Master Rank) That... and Hunter Rank isn't tied to the quest rank in World. Not gonna lie, that confused me a little...
Ugh, I went on a tangent.... anyways. Amitie. Sword and Shield User. HR 4 Hunter. I think... she'll have a Rath Heart SnS (why? PINK). Giving her a Fire element weapon might make more sense but... eh, she technically still uses magic in this AU, so it's probably fine. (I can imagine them using magic in tandem with their weapons, or using them as a... conduit? [is that it?] for magic. Think: Schezo's spells, where you can see the magic coming from the sword.) Typically goes on gathering/egg hunt quests, she's not quite good in direct confrontations with monsters! (Still a little klutzy, but when she's in a pinch, she manages to show an impressive-albeit brief- display of power. Not related to any sun goddess here, she's just stronger than she thinks she is!) Prefers to go on quests with other Hunters (Arle and Ringo, more on those two later), especially during a Hunt or Capture quest.
Arle: ALSO uses a Sword and Shield mainly because A) I can't think of anything better and B) hehe funny Arle and Amitie parallels though I can imagine her being proficient in most if not ALL the other weapons available, especially Bow. Can't think of a specific one she'd use though, sorry... I'll get back to that later. A more skilled Hunter than Amitie, she could probably tackle high-end High Rank monsters with ease (HR 7/8), even when going Solo. mmm, not sure about elders. I think it'd be neat if she managed to take down one or two (they're supposed to be fairly rare, I think), with a group of Hunters. (see: other Madou characters [Draco, Schezo, Rulue]). Probably Kushala Daora or Kirin. I consider them to be "easy" Elders (Chameleos is not here because I'd imagine him to be too elusive for her to have encountered... yet.)
Uhhh. Back on track. She currently resides in Primp Village with some other Madou characters. Maybe takes a sorta part-time job at Primp's canteen, I just think it'd be neat for her to make some KILLER curry. Always pumps up and invigorates anyone who eats it. Also just helps around with problems villagers have in general, she's pretty strong!
Ringo: Lives in the far off... town? yeah I'll just go with that of Suzuran. Albeit uncommon, her presence is always appreciated. I think it's mentioned that her family runs a small grocery store in Suzu, soo I think she'd be like... a traveling merchant? Of the food kind. Fresh fruit...? Perhaps her family even owns an orchid, with their apples being quite popular back home. HEY. WAIT. She could be the equivalent of the Argosy/Trader in the MH games! And the market in general. Anyways, although Ringo is not a hunter per say, she still can assist her buds in hunts (see: Sunbreak follower system). When out hunting, she prefers to use a Light Bowgun. (Modified, cause I imagine her with a Thunder or Paralysis iron tree LBG.) Hell, she's pretty damn good at it too. Probably has a good amount of experience fighting monsters, because a lot can happen when you travel around a lot with goods (especially of the food variety) in tow. Oh god, I just remembered those quests in Rise with this ONE dude who keeps getting his stuff wrecked in like... three different quests... by three different monsters..... that man CANNOT catch a break!!!!!!!!! Oh right. Not sure what Ringo's HR would be, cus' she's not officially a hunter. Sorta? Maybe. Would be around Ami's level, if not a tad bit higher. Since she's not quite really a hunter, she doesn't (or can't?) take quests solo. Not that I think she'd have too much of a problem with it, i think.
Um. That's all I got... well, not really. But this is becoming TOO LONG!!! If anyone sees this... lmk what you think? OH. YEAH WAIT BEFORE I FORGET... most of the characters probably are aged up in this AU (young adults?) because I don't think teens are really allowed to risk their lives Hunting that Monster if you get what I mean. No, I'm not counting the Rampage summons.... it's more of a "all hands on deck" kinda deal to be there!
As for how their designs would look.... Amitie's definitely gonna be based off her Swordfighter alt, and Ringo would probably have hers based around the Steam Ages one (but MHified, and that's obviously for her "hunting" look.) Arle? Uh. Probably a more armored version of her normal look. Can't remember any alts in particular. Sorry...
ANYWAYS THAT'S IT FOR REAL!!! Good god I spent too long rambling about this. I think I'm a little bit obsessed....
#fowl rambling#UAUAHAHAHAHAJJJM HELP KEEEEEEEEEEE#puyohunter au#<- yes I am fucking calling it that. I CAN'T THINK OF A BETTER NAME!#stop laughing....#monster hunter#who out here huntin they monster#puyo puyo#I'm so sorry to anyone who happens upon this bruh#puyo puyo au#monster hunter au

Grow Up
So I've been seeing a lot of people commenting as a reply to me about "boo hoo 40 hr work week too long" and I want to throat punch people.
First and foremost, we live in a system where you work for IOU's. That IOU is Money. Let me explain WHY you work for IOU's today.
We live in a society now where there are far more people and far more connections in today's world. Combine that with modern technology and you have more than a few issues when it comes to archaic trade and barter. We no longer live in a world where you can just farm and trade wheat for a chair and table. You can't just trade a few gems for tools. That world is LONG since past. And even if it had not, we'd be babysitting a large chunk of society.
It's a pretty basic reason why too. Only so many people can farm. Moreover, there are SO many people that have ZERO real world skills and certainly no trade skills. IE: A lot of you produce nothing of ACTUAL tangible value. And while you might be insulted by that, it's the truth. If you create content online, you do not create tangible value. You might entertain people or make them happy but that's it. It's a feeling. You create a feeling. But in the broader scheme of things what you do does not have tangible effects on the world.
And even if I look at this from a philosophical bleeding heart point of view of "UwU well actually feelings are tangible" I'd be lying. We have tried so fucking hard to make everyone, in every way feel special. Thing is? There are jobs out there that are far more important than some of the others out there. That's just a fact. (Moderate clarification here. If you are a content creator or a job that does not produce tangible value that doesn't imply your job or whatever it is has no worth. As I'm sure that will be the take away. That's not what I mean. Value vs Tangible Value are not the same. Take that however you will.)
Here is the other thing that pisses me off though. This bitching and moaning about 40-hr work weeks. Maybe you are too young to know this but back in the day work weeks were MUCH longer. This until Mr. Ford decided that he wanted to make the work week shorter for his company. He did this while not reducing the pay or benefits of the people working for him. And people might say, "Well I should be able to work LESS hours today because I'm lazy and can't time manage". I'm sorry but that's not my fault.
And before I get the "Wage slave" or "minimum wage" bullshit I'll go ahead and address that next.
Wage Slavery is what you would refer to someone who is BOUND to their job and can't get another job. Effectively an actual slave. In the US and most Western Nations you always have the ability to either get a new job, or move up in your current job. Or worst case, to work more than one job. Something that people have done for actual years prior to now. You existing in today's world does not mean that you get things handed to you on a silver platter. And what's more, you have the ability to work for what you see as what you are worth. The issue? Most of you value your work far more than it's actually worth. Because we live in several generations of entitled shits that are lazy and demand the world cater to them.
And I refuse to keep sugar coating this. Life isn't fair. It will NEVER be fair. Now to address minimum wage. Minimum Wage is now and always has been for low skill jobs. Jobs that you can get in High School or right afterwards while you are still figuring things out. M.W. is not meant to be lived off of. And this idea that "Well uhm akchewally it used to be the min needed to live well off of". No it didn't. Businesses that do well, and need people that are educated or experienced will pay you more to work for them. Like take Walmart for instance. They currently pay 13$ an hour starting. I think with POTENTIALLY only being cart pushers. And that might not even be the case because they may actually get the 13$. And while I hear you WHINE like a child that it's not enough money to live off of; You'd be wrong.
Well partly wrong. Fact is politicians on both sides at least in the US and the current sitting president have DECIMATED the economy. However if you look to California what you will see is what the disgusting nature of the Democrats looks like. What do I mean.
That would be this. Here is the kicker though. You know who got a pass on this bill? Panera. Do you know why? Because they donated 150k to his campaign. This bill also ended up costing over 10k, workers because people, mostly the ones that complain about all of this stuff don't understand jack shit about economics. Not shocked by this because most of you are lazy Marxist FUCKS. You think people should be slaves to YOU and what you want. You demand other peoples labor as if it's YOUR right. It's not. And the Gov pushing for higher wages don't make people's lives better. It makes them worse.
Because it puts the bar for starting a small business so fucking high that it's near impossible to do. All it would do is create a system in which only the exceptionally rich are able to start businesses. IE: Corporatism. Wages being controlled by the state more or less makes it so that businesses will ONLY hire the VERY best people. No interns. No way to come in and learn. You would be a burden on their system when all they are trying to do is pay to run their business.
Stop working Min-Wage jobs. Start looking for higher paying jobs or go into jobs with the intent to move upward in those jobs. Take on more responsibilities. Work later hours if you have to. Stop relying on big daddy gov to do everything for you. They are not and SHOULD not be your babysitter. You see that they screw up most EVERYTHING and you want them to ruin more shit? Sure hand them more power let's see how that pans out for us. Watch as the rich flee from the country and we end up with less and less jobs in the US. Also let me address one last thing. 40 hrs a week is basically nothing. That's 8 hrs a day, out of a total of 24 hrs in a day. Meaning probably 2 days off. But also what is 40 hours a week? 168 hours exist in a week. And most jobs offer vacation time AND benefits. Benefits you would pay much more for if you didn't get it through subsidy of your company. That factors into your wages.
But the reason this post is called GROW UP is because I'm tired of you fucking CHILDREN worshiping systems like Marxism (Communism and Socialism) when if you were ever put under those systems you'd be slaves TO those systems like everyone else. And you are too indoctrinated to realize it. Economics is actually a relatively easy thing to grasp if you start learning about it. Most people don't care to learn about it though. They just want to whine.
Finally the last point I will cover is one I have made posts about on their own. Minimum Wage and Minimum Living Wage are NOT the same thing and never were the same. Minimum wage is the least amount that the USG says a business is allowed to pay you. You a US citizen. (They can pay illegals less but that's not the point of this post......LOOKING AT YOU TYSON) Minimum living wage is a joke of a concept because you can't gauge it. Because no two people have the same amount of bills.
What's more, there's a bigger issue in the fact that rent isn't the same in any two places. Car prices are not identical between same year cars. Phone plans are not created equal. Some people have kids. Some have spouses. Minimum Living Wage is a fucking gimik. Because that number is not only different from person to person but from city to city and from state to state. Legislating it would not just be impossible but it would make our system as a whole crumble.
Because imagine that you decide to move into the most expensive houses that you can, get the most expensive everything else, keep your lights on all day and your water running. Why should your company have to pay for that? They shouldn't. Because that's you taking advantage of them. AND what's even funnier is the fact that they would ONLY hire people in the WORST and cheapest accommodations and avoid hiring people in more expensive places with higher bills. IF by some way it was able to be legislated. Which it can't be.
It takes minimal thought to get through all of what I just went through. VERY little critical thinking is needed to get this far. Sure things back in the day were cheaper and yes you could live off one person's wages. Except the moment that women got equal rights to work and legislation started being pushed to make sure the workforce pushed them into jobs you lost that right. Is this me shitting on women's rights to work? No. This is me making a statement of fact that the west got duped. Effectively, 50% of the population of the US was not being Taxed. Who do you think actually benefited most from women's equal rights to work? The IRS and the USG. We expanded the US workforce from 50% of the population the 100% in the span of a month. The market could not compensate. And frankly speaking with the intake of massive amounts of illegals into the US it STILL can't.
People seem to think that everything "Progressive" is a great idea but they never think through the unintended consequences of pushing certain things. Women can be self sufficient now and that's awesome. Sadly that comes at a cost. The cost being that there aren't enough jobs to go around in some instances, and the fact that prices actually have to go up to compensate for that hit to the market. Prices going up after the 1980's make sense for that reason.
Critical thinking is a skill. And not everything is just "Corporate Greed" or "Sexism" or "Racism". Sometime things are just a result of changes in culture. This is a change that everyone today seems to mostly endorse, so guess what? You will never again be able to live off of one income unless it's over 80k and you pinch pennies. Or unless you make 100k and make sure to invest in things and monitor you money. Or you could live in places with lower living costs, but most of you don't care to do that because you'd rather just bitch until the place you live changes for you.
The real world doesn't work like that. You are not wage slaves. 40 Hours a week isn't long. Kindly get your head out of your asses.
@capitalism-and-analytics Feel free to gloss over this and add anything even if you do or don't agree.
