Calgary's public and Catholic school boards have revealed new rules banning the use of cellphones, tablets, laptops and smartwatches in classes, aligning with a ministerial order from the province to prevent distractions from learning. The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) unveiled its approach to regulating personal mobile devices on Tuesday. Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) chief superintendent Bryan Szumlas informed parents of its new rules in an email on Friday. The rules cover use of personal mobile devices as well as devices capable of communicating with them like headphones or Bluetooth speakers. Immortality's Unsettling Mystery Comes To PlayStation 5 This Month

Sam Barlow’s acclaimed interactive cinematic mystery game Immortality is making its way to PlayStation 5 on January 23. The game first arrived on Xbox Series X/S and PC in August 2022.

Like Barlow’s previous works, Her Story and Telling Lies, Immortality sees players interacting with live-action footage to solve the mystery behind the disappearance of fictional actress Marissa Marcel (Manon Gage). Once a promising young star, Marcel only made three movies – none of which were ever released – before she vanished. 

Learning what happened to Marcel involves searching out dozens of clips of each film’s behind-the-scenes footage, scrubbing them for clues, and finding related videos using the ability to “match cut.” This mechanic allows players to click on elements within a scene (like a person or object) to uncover new clips featuring that selected element. The PS5 version enhances these mechanics with new haptic feedback and controller speaker features.

The other day while fumbling with my phone I somehow inadvertently turned on the "AI" powered voice-activated bullshit. It filled up my whole screen with invitations to their innovative new bullshit I didn't fucking ask for and in fact had already tried my best (and failed, clearly) to explicitly disable on the entire device.

Enraged, while I desperately searched for an X to press to make the thing close (hard to find because it wanted to scan my fucking voice), I said "what the fuck is this bullshit? turn this the fuck off. TURN THIS THE FUCK OFF."

And then my phone, which I had tried repeatedly to remove all traces of voice activation and "AI" from, played to me out loud in a text to speech voice, "I may be a machine, but the language you use is still important." And refused to close until I asked it nicely.

(I didn't, by the way. I continued fucking swearing at it until I located a way to turn it off with my HANDS. I would have thrown it out the window before I said please to my fucking phone.)

Fuck this shit. It is not a person, it does not have feelings, it does not have a mind, it does not have a personality, it does not have a soul, it is a very fancy calculator which I bought and paid for, and someone has programmed it to scold me (nearly 40 fucking years old) for swearing at my TELEPHONE.

I don't even take that kind of shit from my FRIENDS AND FAMILY. My TELEPHONE - no, the people who programmed my telephone to try to maximize its use to them for data mining - were trying to censor my language to make me think of it as a person that I should be considerate of.

IT'S A FUCKING CALCULATOR. And if you think of your fancy calculator as a person deserving of respect, well. Garfield up there said it pretty well: you are disturbingly susceptible to propaganda. You're the kind of person who will squee over the cute "doggy" while a canine-shaped military robot kills people.

I didn’t have a cell until late in high school in the 2000s, and my third and last flip I was still using in 2022.

The biggest difference has been in the amount of psychological draw designed into the functions and interface of a smartphone. The apps, notifications, and bombardment of information coming through it are intentionally pulling attention, convincing you of the habit to check and use it for everything. Just because the functions are there isn’t a good enough reason to integrate everything into dependence and passively provide information out of convenience.

This is to say nothing about the ballooning of services and fees on devices that have increasingly short lifespans. The phone aspect of the technology isn’t even close to the primary purpose anymore--it has a lot of meaningful and useful functions for communication to be sure, but comes at a cost to our personal and mental space.

Focus is no longer on usefulness, durability, and repair. They’re not just physically getting more fragile, but the development supporting them moves at a faster pace and the hardware isn’t designed to keep up. Functionality breaks or the device does. The same could be said about a lot of unnecessarily smart devices but none have had the reach of the internet or the cellphone.

We’d probably do a lot better by limiting and compartmentalizing what devices can do again for our own health, safety, and privacy. The ancient raging against new media technology being a net harm has never met something as pervasive or manipulative as the smartphone.

Kinda crazy how my first cellphone didn't have a camera or internet and 17 years later this thing knows more about me than I do and gives people brand new mental ilnesses.
