Horror Movie of the day: Kwaidan (1964)
What are ghosts? How do they manifest when show up? It could be in the guilt of a samurai, who left his wife in order to advance his position by remarrying to the daughter of an important family only to try and come back to his lost love. It could be a woodcutter's fear after surviving an encounter with the Yuki Onna, woman of snow, in the condition he keeps this encounter to himself. Maybe it's in the strange aura the Emperor has when asking a blind musician to perform for him in an univiting court. Or maybe, they could be found in the distorted reflection a warrior sees in his cup of tea. These are the stories from the beyond.
Directed by Masaki Kobayashi and based on a collection of traditional stories compilled by Lafcadio Hearn, this is arguably still the ultimate ghost anthology to ever come out of Japan. It quite intelligently favors the psychological angle for the characters who experience the stories, which enhances the illogic and fright of the supernatural terrors they face while also landing them exquisite thematic depth. It's a set of four separate strong scripts that could survive even with lesser visuals.
That isn't to say the movie isn't a visual treat, however. With a lavish production design, it isn't afraid of playing loose with the visual realism where it finds it fitting, using fairly obvious but strongly expressionistic set designs where the backgrounds are clearly painted. And since all these are traditional folkloric stories, this aesthetic qurik lends them a theatre-like quality as if you were watching a Noh play, while also having some absolutely STELLAR cinematography and a breathtaking color palette that fits the mood of each story.
It's on the long end with a little over three hours of runtime, but this just means every story gets it's proper due and it's all the more worthy for it. This isn't just a horror classic, it's an absolute must watch for any enthusiast of the art of cinema.

Take Aim at the Police Van
Tumblr media
The great stylist of Japanese B movies, Seijun Suzuki, made his first foray into “borderless action” (crime films with a Western flavor) with TAKE AIM AT THE POLICE VAN (1960, Criterion Channel, TCM, Plex). It’s not as insane as his later films in the genre, but it’s still quite out there, with echoes of Robert Aldrich, Sam Fuller and Orson Welles.
Snipers attack a police van carrying prisoners, killing two of them. The guard (Michitaro Mizushima) is suspended, mainly, I suspect, to motivate the plot. Out of a sense of duty, he uses his free time to track down the killers, an investigation that  him to a strip club, a couple of brothels and a modelling agency that specializes in sexual trafficking. It also leads him to the agency owner’s daughter, Misako Watanabe, who gives a marvelous performance as a more sensitive femme fatale. The plot doesn’t always make sense. I’m still not sure exactly why the criminals attacked the police van, and I suspect everybody just forgot that Watanabe probably killed one victim’s girlfriend (in a rather shocking moment right out of Sam Fuller). But even in a more subdued state, Suzuki’s direction is so intoxicating you may not care. The opening attack and the final showdown are particularly well done, and the use of brief flashback and fantasy images to illustrate Mizushima’s thought processes as he pieces together the mystery is strikingly cinematic.
As in Suzuki’s earlier EIGHT HOURS OF TERROR (1957), the script eludes to the social effects of the end of the U.S. occupation. With no U.S. soldiers as customers, the agency has to develop more extreme methods of selling what Watanabe calls “merchandise.” There’s also a hint of a theme about the unreliable nature of appearances. People lie to Mizushima constantly, and you’re never sure whether Watanabe, who looks like a nice middle-class businesswoman, is good or bad or somewhere in between. Suzuki’s directorial vision grew increasingly absurd in his later films, so this may be the best entry point for appreciating his often quite amazing take on film noir.

Tumblr media
‘With the new revelation of the famous restaurant, Pig boy being connected to Ultimate Despair and the Yakuza. The restaurant will permanently close and is force to shut down all around the world which Future Foundation is working as we speak.’
*A news broadcast was spread on a TV which the kids and the Towa City Task Force was watching*
Kid 1: Wow... so Pig Boy was connected to Despair?
Kid 2: It was, I'm still surprise it was - the food tasted good too...
Tumblr media
Ugh, I rather not think about this. it's a good thing I'm a vegetarian then, I can't believe it...
Tumblr media
Yeah... me either honestly...
Tumblr media
Yeah but still, now it makes me question if there are other places connected to Despair too.
Tumblr media
Well if anything, good riddance to that place then if you ask me; I always felt that place was weird...
*As the kids were watching the news...*
Tumblr media
Wow... it's even connected to the Yakuza too?
Tumblr media
Yeah and it seems to be the Kuzuruyu Clan, can't say I'm too surprise about it.
Tumblr media
Well at least it's getting shut down now.
Tumblr media
Ye-Yeah I mean I ate their stuff before and it taste so good and it explains a lot; it was drugged!
Tumblr media
Well... at least it's good I'm a vegetarian then...
Tumblr media
Well given a lot of us didn't know, it make sense we wouldn't foresight is 20/20 in this case.
Tumblr media
Indeed, probably it's good that we have food here and I didn't eat any of it.
Tumblr media
Wait… doesn't Jiro like eating there?
Tumblr media
Hm? did you say something?
Tumblr media
Nothing, just that my younger brother usually likes to eat at Pig boy and now I can imagine him throwing up right about now; I probably should call him and see if he's okay.
Tumblr media
Would be a good idea...
Tumblr media
Yeah I think so too...
Tumblr media
But at least the news is out now, good work mom.

Mariko Kaga in With Beauty and Sorrow (Masahiro Shinoda, 1965) Cast: Kaoru Yachigusa, Mariko Kaga, So Yamamura, Kei Yamamoto, Misako Watanabe, Haruko Sugimura. Screenplay: Nobuo Yamada, based on a novel by Yasunari Kawabata. Cinematography: Masao Kosugi. Art direction: Junichi Osumi. Film editing: Yoshi Sugihara, Music: Toru Takemitsu. Some mannered acting and stagy blocking mars Masahiro Shinoda's otherwise involving With Beauty and Sorrow, a revenge drama that doesn't quite transcend its genre. Toshio Oki (So Yamamura), a womanizing novelist whose wife just barely puts up with his extramarital exploits, once had an affair with the young artist Otoko Ueno (Kaoru Yachigusa). She became pregnant but lost the baby at birth, and suffered severe psychological trauma. Now she lives with a young woman, Keiko (Mariko Kaga), her student and her lover. Otoko has recovered her emotional stability, and even agrees to meet Oki when he telephones her on a visit to Kyoto, sending Keiko to his hotel to take him to the restaurant where they will reunite. But Keiko is, as even Otoko suggests, a little "crazy," and after the meeting begins to plot ways to bring about her lover's revenge on Oki. Eventually, this involves Keiko's seducing not only Oki but also his son, Taichiro (Kei Yamamoto), a graduate student of medieval Japanese history, with predictably disastrous consequences. Old pro So Yamamura is excellent as Oki, and it's good to see the great Haruko Sugimura, veteran of many films by Shinoda's mentor, Yasujiro Ozu, in the small part of Otoko's mother. But the younger actors, particularly Kaga and Yamamoto, turn what might have been an affecting portrayal of doomed characters into melodrama. The film benefits from Toru Takemitsu's score, though it sometimes feels a bit at odds with the soap-operatic events on screen.

"Love"
An emotional state where you feel affection for someone, and you can't get that person out of your mind, day in and day out, affecting your ability to focus on other things, and makes you want to squirm inside.
When fulfilled, it feels like you're on top of the world.
