Well, there is one recent discovery that caught my attention. It's not exactly a good thing, but it is worth bringing up since you asked.

At least 75% of life on Earth went extinct during each of the five major mass extinction events that scientists have identified throughout Earth's history. However, many scientists believe that the sixth mass extinction is already occurring as a result of habitat destruction, species extinction, and climate change. One team even refers to the process as "biological annihilation" and "mutilation of the tree of life" in their scientific research.

It just...isn't very nice to think about a whole species dying out is all.
