assorted thoughts on: how the muses' wrap gifts based on @strangewonderful's muse question of the day
tadashi is very good at wrapping, but he rarely uses wrapping paper. more often than not, a gift from tadashi is wrapped in a paper grocery bag he deconstructed, or paper from sketches he no longer needs. he's an adamant proponent of scratch paper and having a scratch paper bin in his lab so sometimes things come from there. he always manages to make it look nice rather than last minute.
buttercup loves to throw something in a box. if she can put some confetti or pom pom type objects to fill it, all the better, but she's a box girl all the way. no box? gift right into your hand.
romeo has gotten very good at wrapping. he comes from a childhood of building theater sets and making props. he should not be underestimated with a craft. but also, his go to gift for everyone is books which makes his job very easy! he's gotten into more creative means of wrapping too. he does use the weirdest wrapping paper ever though and one year he didn't pay attention and the design was on the inside.
jennifer is decent at wrapping a gift. it is something that takes her time, so usually she will default to a bag with layers of tissue paper and a ribbon on the handle. if it's a gift for the avengers, she buys avenger themed wrapping paper. she thinks its funny. she'll try to get something very direct and on the nose for whoever she's gifting it to.
natasha uses a little bit too much tape but she gets the job done. she's not that fussy, she doesn't really care for a ribbon. if it's oddly shaped, there's more tape. her biggest struggle really is that she keeps using the little tapes that are semi transparent and don't hold anything well.
bob is... he's patient with his wrapping paper but he will fully throw a piece away if it's clear that this might be his 3rd or 4th fold of it and it's starting to get those white rubbed off design creases. it's gonna be sweet though, he likes to do a bow! he's very good at doing bow designs with it.
bradley puts it in a bag. bradley hasn't really done gifts over the years and when he does, he's putting it in a bag. no hassle.
josh needs somebody else to wrap it. if he can get someone else to wrap it he will. he thinks the best addition in consumerism has been the in store gift wrappers. that being said, he's perfectly capable of a decent wrap job.
cj is a box person. sometimes she'll add a very simple ribbon, but usually it's just a box. it's what's fast, and she really doesn't want to deal with the trials of wrapping.
donna is a very simple wrapper. she's very good at it, but she doesn't let it ruin her day. she's wrapped a lot of stuff, and she honestly thinks not everything has to be incredibly sharped and pressed. there's some homey feeling to a little bit of puff and extra love. she loves a very classic paper like a plaid or something with cute drawings
midge knows how to wrap. midge could wrap a bicycle, she could wrap a pony, she would find a way to wrap you a house. she loves a bow and she loves the holidays. the finest gift wrapping you will ever see and experience in your life will come from her.
cathy is going to show you a ribbon so masterful and then call it "just a little 'ol family trick" she knows. she's been making the same full out ribbon on gifts since she was a little girl. the wrapping is alright, but the bow is the masterpiece.
finnick: let me just say. you're lucky if it isn't handed to you wet.
buck is still watching the same youtube video on repeat. actually not the whole video, but just the same 6 seconds where he's not sure what just happened and he needs to see it more, and no it doesn't occur to him to slow down the video. the gift will be wrapped well.
bobby is CLEAN with those folds. the 118 is lined up outside his door when they need something wrapped and he takes a lot of pride in that. he might even host a little santa's workshop to teach everyone to wrap and yes he calls it that.
ellie likes to put a gift right into someone's hands. she's a little too excited about whatever she's gifting because usually she picks something so good or just so cheeky that she doesn't even want to wait through the other person unwrapping it.
elizabeth uses a box for everything. everything needs to be easy to wrap and she just won't do something odd shaped that's hard. she knows how to wrap a box though so things go in a box and she lines that with tissue paper for an added touch. then it's wrapped and it's decent!
trip... for all his engineering… theres like 6 added pieces to that thing bc he hasnt measured correctly. in fact hes so good at engineering that he was like. i fuckin got this. enjoy this surgery job of a wrap
paul tries to wrap things with wrapping paper. he really does try. it's not good though. he should stop trying. he hands the gift over and knows it's not a great job, but it's a job and it's the gift that matters and these are all things he will say to the person too.
gen goes for wrapping but no bow. he also sticks to red or gold wrapping paper usually as a preference! he's pretty good at it and when it comes to an oddly shaped object will commit to finding a way around it that still looks nice. he might do that thing where it's rolled up like a tube with a rubber band or tie on each end.
joann wraps all things with natural materials, or as close to natural as it gets with the replicators and such. she'll use a rope or a twine in place of a ribbon, but ribbons work too. she will forgo paper usually and it's just wrapped with the tie!
adira goes for a box with a ribbon! the ribbon is just your most basic kind, but really the presentation is kept absolutely simple.
spock doesn't wrap gifts usually. he's much more of a hand someone something directly kind of guy. that being said, he's been around humans who do wrap for a while and so sometimes he might put it in a very nice piece of fabric!
mark: bag alert. this one's putting it in a bag. one time, he gave a present directly in the store bag he bought it in.
farrah doesn't wrap things. she's also a put it in your hands directly sort of person, but also she doesn't tend to do big gifts. more often than not it's a small token of something and so it might go into a pouch if anything at all.
neal gives gifts that wrapping is at times not necessary for. a nice bottle of wine comes in a box. beautiful jewelry comes in a pristine box. his gifts speak for themselves. he's never wrapped anything and he might risk a paper cut if he does.
holly wraps it in tissue paper by just folding it over and over but like... sides open. it's weird. it's a mess. she also puts it in a bag.

the undine pool
Night was falling, and the trees cast their long shadows by the light of the moon as she reined her horse to a halt in the midst of the green and verdant hollow.
It seemed to her, as she swung her weary self from the saddle, that she was sore from top to toe, that her muscles were crying out in protests as much as they ever had after a hard week of jousting in the King's lists. But the first night of a journey was always like that, she remembered. It would grow better.
Either that, or she would become numb to it. She'd never quite been sure which.
Leaving Miriam, the grey mare, to make her own way amongst the heather, Elyse lifted off her helmet, allowing her long chestnut curls to tumble around her shoulders, and shook her head to free the few stubborn locks clinging close to her forehead.
Lord, that was better.
She sat by the stream, perched uncomfortably on a moss-clad rock, and removed the rest of her armour, piece by piece. It was a long and difficult process, and the reason why most knights went about their endeavours with the assistance of a squire. But there were few young men who liked the thought of being squire to a woman, and there were even fewer she would have trusted with the job. There was precious little space for modesty when she was out questing.
Of course, she could have taken a woman, but there weren't many who were keen on following in her footsteps.
Having walked in her footsteps, she couldn't say that she blamed them.
At long last, she'd shed the sweat-slick metal and she stretched out her limbs, free after a long day in the saddle. Sword laid carefully aside, boots unlaced, she was herself again.
There was only one need left to attend to, and it was becoming more pressing by the moment. Fumbling with the lacings of her breeches, Elyse squatted and relaxed, her mind drifting away for a moment in the pleasant haziness of relief as an incriminating puddle spread around her feet. She was never truly calm when she was alone in the hinterlands, but this was as close as she had been all day.
Her guard down, she paid no attention to her own waters mingling with those of the brook at her side. It must be said that even if she had, she would have thought nothing of it.
Until a naked green woman erupted from the surface, small fish stranded in her hair and weed clinging between her breasts, and screeched in her face.
Elyse fell over, taken entirely by surprise, and found herself, to her disgust, sitting in her own puddle of cooling urine. "Who… what…"
"Who, that's what! Can't you think what you're doing?" The green woman spoke energetically, though she sounded more irritated than angry, the knight thought. "Don't you know where you are? Don't you know what you've done?"
"I'm very sorry if I've caused any trouble —"
"Trouble! Trouble!" Her unexpected visitor laughed. "She talks to me of trouble! We shall both be in trouble, child, if you go on like this."
"But I'm not a child," Elyse protested, acutely conscious of her situation. "And anyhow —"
"Not a child!"
"Well, I'm not! I'm thirty!"
"I'm four hundred and eight," the green woman retorted, without missing a beat. "You're a child so far as I'm concerned, and if I were you, I'd stay that way. Children have some excuse for not thinking about their actions — for not controlling themselves — for urinating inappropriately — for not knowing things —"
"But —"
"How would you like it if I came and pissed in your house?" The green woman surveyed her doubtfully. "I suppose you do have a house?"
"I —"
"You still haven't apologised, you know."
"Well, I'm sorry, but I didn't know!"
"Oh, you didn't know! Oh, well, that's all right then!"
"What was I supposed to do?"
"Control yourself!" The nymph, for such Elyse had to presume her to be, glared up at the knight. "Or, failing that, take measures to protect those around you from the consequences of your infantile bladder control!"
Elyse gazed down at her blankly. "Such as..."
The nymph's green lips parted, revealing a mouthful of teeth which shone like pebbles in the bed of a stream. "Oh, well, if you're asking..."
And quite suddenly, in a way she couldn't begin to explain, Elyse's bare privates were no longer bare.
The redhead looked down at herself, mouth open in shock. Something was wrapped around her, something which felt like cloth, but like no cloth which she'd ever encountered before. Cautiously, not quite knowing what to expect, she prodded it, making herself jump at the crinkling sound. It was like dry leaves underfoot in the autumn, she decided.
Very strange.
"What's this for?" she asked.
The nymph's grin widened. "You'll see."
When morning came, Elyse rode steadily away. Her horse's hooves beat out a steady rhythm on the hard ground, her armour clanked and the harness creaked, her sword rattled in its sheath and the shield knocked against the saddle, and, underneath it all, her wet nappy crinkled with each long, loping stride.
After all, it was a lot of work, taking all that armour off every time she needed to go.

The Hoodoo Woman's Prophecy
Tumblr media
The scent of burning sage and sweetgrass lingered in the air as I made my way down the dirt path toward the small wooden house at the edge of the swamp. Spanish moss draped over the gnarled trees like ancient veils, swaying gently in the warm, humid air. The journey here had been long—not just in distance, but in the soul.
I knocked once, and before my knuckles could land a second time, the door creaked open.
She stood there, regal and unmoving, dressed head to toe in white. A flowing dress brushed against the wooden floor, and a pristine headwrap crowned her like a high priestess of the unseen. A single beaded necklace, dazzling in color, rested against her chest. But it was her eyes that held me still—deep, knowing, as if they had seen every moment of my life before I had even lived it.
“Come in, my child,” she said, her voice a slow and steady hum, as if she were singing to the spirits.
I stepped inside. The walls were lined with dried herbs, old books, and candles that flickered without a breeze. A pot of something rich and earthy simmered on the stove, filling the space with a scent that reminded me of deep roots and forgotten knowledge.
She gestured for me to sit across from her at a round wooden table, its surface worn and etched with strange markings.
“I know why you’re here,” she said before I could utter a word. “I know of the trials you’ve faced, the pain that nearly stole you away. That stroke, it wasn’t just a medical affliction—it was a summons. A call from the unseen. And you heard it.”
A chill ran down my spine. I hadn’t told her about the stroke. I hadn’t told her about the nights I spent questioning my own existence, or how I had felt something shift inside me the moment I survived. But she knew.
She shuffled a deck of cards, their edges frayed from years of use, then laid one down in front of me. A card depicting a figure standing at a crossroads.
“It is time to step into your new life,” she said. “The path behind you is closed. You cannot return to who you were before. The spirits have claimed you, and now you must move forward. If you try to go back, the road will reject you. Do you understand?”
I swallowed hard. I did understand. I had already felt it—the distance between me and my old life growing wider with each passing day. But hearing her say it made it real.
“Where do I go from here?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
She smiled, but there was something heavy in her gaze. “Forward,” she said. “And without fear.”
She reached across the table and placed her hands over mine, her palms warm, her fingers rough with the wisdom of generations. The room felt smaller, quieter, as if the world itself was listening.
“You have been chosen,” she murmured. “The Universe has placed something within you—something that will touch and heal others. Not with your hands, but with sound, with vibration, with frequencies that shift the soul. Your music will not just be heard; it will be felt.”
I felt my breath catch. Music. It had always been my refuge, my language when words failed. But this… this was something different.
“You will elevate,” she continued, her voice like a drumbeat in the silence. “You will vibrate. And through you, others will transform.”
A shiver ran through me, not from fear, but from recognition. It was as though something ancient inside me had been waiting for this very moment to awaken.
She leaned back slightly, nodding, as if she could see the shift within me. “You are no longer who you were,” she said. “You walk a new path now. And you must never turn back.”
Outside, the wind picked up, rustling the trees, whispering secrets through the leaves. The night had never felt so alive.
And neither had I.
I looked at her, searching for the name of the woman who had just rewritten my fate.
She smiled knowingly, as if she had been waiting for me to ask.
“They call me Mother Miriam,” she said. “And now, child, the world will come to know you.”

⚘ starter for @handtame
Did they not deserve this?  A fleeting moment to exist deliciously, dangerously, after so much misery?
It was an indulgence that could invite disaster.  Anri imagined them split open like pomegranates, jewelled viscera scattered and picked over by crabs the size of boulders.  There was something almost poetic in it – blood mingling with blood, bodies encased in the same silt, the same mud, their bones entwined for an eternity.  If only their kind were permitted to rest.
Set back from the water’s edge, the campfire crackled in its makeshift stone cradle, muttering as it chewed on damp kindling.  In a place as sodden as this flooded stretch of woodland, even a small fire felt like a triumph.
Anri perched on a smooth stone, helm and gauntlets set aside, her fingertips trailing idly across the water’s surface.  Minnows darted around her touch – a shoal of silver arrows, soaring above a bed of peat-mulch and feathery moss.  The world here felt alive, electric, far removed from the decay that cloaked so much of Lothric.
Above the canopy, the sun sank lower, sending shafts of gold through the trees to catch in the water like liquid fire.  Anri’s gaze drifted to Miriam and found her standing in one such patch of sunlight, motionless, as though suspended in some divine tableau.  Eyes half-closed, her face tilted towards the radiance, she soaked in the meagre warmth.  Ethereal, the maiden looked ethereal – a doe-eyed vision of serenity, bare of armour.  It was a wonder she had survived this long alone, although Anri supposed the same could be said of her.
“We have earned this, I deem,” Anri called to her companion, keeping her voice soft and low. They were alone, for now, and she hoped to safeguard this rare taste of solitude.

The light filters in. Everything seems in a haze, the verdant decay of the swamps gathered all around. She feels life in the cupped palms of her hands where she lifts the murky water up from the sprawling basin. Insects and larvae twitch against her marble fingers. The lone, wayward maiden of Carim sits on the waterfront and seems to have been sitting here for a while. Eerily still, eerily peaceful, she lets the muck and moss lap up her legs. The sunlight on her shoulders sets her white robes to glowing. A truly picturesque scene, something a particularly heavy-handed romantic might force upon the linen of his canvas with an abundance of oversaturated pigment.
Except for the fruit of her stillness: Frogs sit upon her angled knees, dragonflies rest upon her back. It seems that in her prolonged immobility, the swamp has wordlessly accepted her as part of the landscape. Now it looks to overgrow her and she is inclined to let it. Miriam’s half-closed eyes at last flutter when she cuts her gaze from the water to the shadow that falls upon her lap.
“Oh. You must be who I’ve heard so much about.” Says one strange woman to another, with no third person to speak to either of them. “You’re not here to cut me down, are you?”
Heysel shadow-caster looks down, and tilts her head, and laughs.
The tower of looping cloth that makes the shape of her hat dampens the sound. She’d first bitten into it with private delight anyway, in the manner one does when learning a lovely secret to keep behind closed teeth. All that escapes the folds is a small hee hee hee!, cut into crumbs.
“Really! You’ve heard of me!” Heysel whispers, low but gleeful- marshlife has congealed upon the stranger; she is so preciously draped in mucous skins and tiny limbs and glittery shells, white becoming every shade a swamp can offer, a woman-hare shucking off her winter coat to welcome loam-hearted spring. Heysel is a hunter. She has pick and crossbow and all the instruments to bleed meat, still or fleeing. But the woman-hare is not prey, today. No flag of ghost red promises violence across her limbs. She comes as herself, the person that isn't a Finger, bright mantle and brass medals, made of meat that can bleed too, capable of stilling and fleeing and seeing beauty, and seeing it now, before herself. And for this beauty she will refrain from being as loud as she tends to be, lest every little creature frightens.
“I would say I hope it was good things, but your second sentence does tell me that in fact they weren’t,” she continues, her tone still carefully modulated. “First of all, please no worries! As we stand now, I mean no harm! Were you to see me more phantom-like, well, then I fear we’d be having a problem. But right now? I am very much not here to cut you down. Just strolling and happening upon truly special scenes.”
A smile, audible. The hand empty of pick points at the woman.
“You’re- a travelling maiden, yes? From the dress.” White as winter fur. White as candleflame’s edge. “Cannot say I’ve seen many of your kind, but for sure I’ve never seen one so… uh! Appreciative of a swamp?” She's never seen anyone, really, appreciative of a swamp. Only sweet Cuculus, and she is a pyromancer. If she didn't like them then it would truly be the end of sense. “I thought maidens usually travelled with their knights. Or a protector. None for you?”
Heysel, foolishly, gasps as soon as she says the sentence. Inconsiderate woman! What if she had a protector, and now she doesn’t? What if she’s prodding at scabbing wounds? Oh, she talks too much, she does.
“-Sorry! I overtalk. My apologies. But I will say that I’m glad you seem to like this place.” The tip of a boot taps the ground, lightly. “I adore it! I really do. One grows used to the poison in the water, too.”

The Top Twenty Books I Read in 2023
Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell (1949): I thought somebody would make me read this book in school, but no one ever did. Now that I've read it, let me just say...mark me down as horny and scared! No, I will not explain what I mean by that.
Prairie Fires by Caroline Fraser (2017): In this examination of Laura Ingalls Wilder's life and work, Fraser skillfully weaves a portrait of two complicated women (Wilder and her daughter/editor Rose Wilder Lane) with an overview of large swathes of American history. The examination of how Wilder and Lane adapted Wilder's life experiences into autobiographical fiction and why they made those choices is particularly interesting.
Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver (2022): This is a retelling of David Copperfield by Charles Dickens, transplanted to Appalachia in the 1990s-2000s. Kingsolver retains the warmth and the pathos of the original, and the narrative voice is great.
Song of the Magdalene by Donna Jo Napoli (1996): Miriam, a Jewish girl in first-century Magdala, finds her life altered by unexplained seizures, which she must keep secret, and a first love that ends in tragedy. Napoli often brings it when it comes to thoughtful portrayals of disability and unexpectedly weird sensuality, and this novel is one of her best.
My Sweet Audrina by V.C. Andrews (1982): Audrina Adare, a young girl with severe memory problems, lives in an isolated Virginia mansion with her domineering father and various deranged female relatives...and it gets worse. This is V.C. Andrews at her most deliciously perverse and lurid, and I was definitely rooting for Audrina to close the portal.
I Never Asked You to Understand Me by Barthe DeClements (1986): Faced with her mother's terminal cancer diagnosis and the unhelpfulness of most adults in her life, fifteen-year-old Didi ends up at an alternative school for truancy and finds a friend in Stacy, a would-be runaway whose home life is even more dire. This 1980s YA problem novel always gets me, thanks to the author's gentle, empathetic treatment of her messy teenage characters.
Black Swan Green by David Mitchell (2006): Jasons, a thirteen-year-old boy in early-1980s Worchestershire, copes with brutal grade-school politics, a tense home life, various small losses of innocence, and the odd supernatural event over the span of a year. My favorite stretch of the novel was where half a dozen scary/weird/sexually confusing things happen in the course of Jason taking one meandering walk through the countryside.
Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut (1963): I'd been intending to read a Kurt Vonnegut novel since he died in 2007, so don't say I never follow through on anything. This book is extraordinarily fun and absurd, which just enhances the horror of the eventual climax.
The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton (1905): Cash-strapped socialite Lily Bart struggles in turn-of-the-century New York society, mainly because she can neither fully commit to gold-digging nor figure out a viable alternative. Her crumbling state, both social and psychological, is horrifying yet fascinating to witness.
The Fell by Sarah Moss (2021): In November 2020, English waitress and single mother Kate breaks quarantine to take a walk through the countryside, with disastrous results. This short novel is lyrical, compassionate, and impressively stressful.
Old Babes in the Woods by Margaret Atwood (2023): This short story collection is split between vignettes featuring elderly couple Nell and Tig, and several standalones that vary wildly in tone and form. All are well-written, but I generally enjoyed the standalones best, especially the poignant "My Evil Mother," the chilling "Freeforall," and the thought-provoking "Metempsychosis."
Beware the Woman by Megan Abbott (2023): Pregnant Jacy goes with her new husband to visit his widowed father in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, but a pleasant vacation soon turns into a paranoid nightmare. Abbott's lush descriptions--kind of sexy and kind of gross, as always--enhance a truly disturbing thriller.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (1925): This is another book I assumed someone would make me read in school, but I think all my teachers and professors were like "yeah, yeah, The Great Gatsby, we all know what that is." What you don't get from the Baz Luhrmann movie and pop-cultural osmosis, though, is the exquisite secondhand embarrassment of watching Gatsby pursue a married woman who is actually more into her husband, or just how fucking bizarre that husband is.
How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix (2023): Single mother Louise is pulled from San Francisco to her hometown of Charleston by the sudden death of her parents and has to coordinate funeral arrangements with her ne'er-do-well brother Mark...and it gets worse. This isn't the best or the scariest Grady Hendrix novel, but the sibling relationship is compelling and it features the incomparable Pupkin. I love that fucked-up lil hand-puppet.
Seventeen and In-Between by Barthe Declements (1984): High-school senior Elsie Edwards is beautiful, brilliant, and talented, but she's still plagued by the lingering trauma of childhood bullying, her terrible parents, and her complicated feelings for her long-term boyfriend (slightly older and jonesing to Go All the Way) and her male best friend (also trying to figure things out, albeit through working in the lumber industry in Forks, Washington). The Elsie Edwards trilogy is great overall, and Elsie's struggle to figure out how to move beyond her unhappy past is especially moving.
Don't Look and It Won't Hurt by Richard Peck (1972): Carol, the sixteen-year-old middle daughter of a poor divorced waitress, gets a front seat to her older sister's disastrous relationship with a scumbag, experiences her own first romance, and sorts through her feelings about her strained family and stultifying small prairie town. This is a sweet, understated early YA novel that offers a look into the last few years before Roe v. Wade.
I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy (2022): In this memoir, McCurdy recounts her relationship with her controlling, abusive late mother and her dispiriting time as a child star on Nickelodeon. I really enjoyed her writing style--clear, conversational, and bracingly pissed off--and she offers some good insight into the acting industry.
Just Like You by Nick Hornby (2020): Joseph, a twentysomething black working-class Londoner balancing his musical aspirations with babysitting gigs and a job at a butcher's shop, stars a romance with Lucy, a fortysomething upper-middle-class white single mom and schoolteacher. This is a pleasant, easygoing love story with some insightful commentary on how ordinary people form political opinions.
The Fourth Grade Wizards by Barthe DeClements (1988): Fourth grader Marianne is distracted in class and adrift at home after her mother's sudden death, but she has a good friend in Jack, who struggles in class because he's hyperactive. You might ask why this list is so dominated by one 1980s middle-grade/YA author, and the answer is that I love her. Also, I did not read all that many new-to-me books last year.
How Do You Lose Those Ninth Grade Blues? by Barthe DeClements (1983): Elsie Edwards, no longer the emotionally battered class pariah she was in Nothing's Fair in Fifth Grade but not yet the maturing young woman she'll become in Seventeen and In-Between, starts high school with everything going for her...except her horribly low self-esteem and her still-terrible home life. This is definitely the slightest installment of the trilogy, but it still makes an impact.

Venus manages to inch out of her bed.. Just barley making is past Miriam's watchful eye as she slips quietly out the door..
She tries to ignore his drowsiness, though the ground beckons Venus.. Venus resists and pushes on as she trenches through the Forrest...
She finally comes to a hault at the largest tree around. Or what seemed to be a tree at least.. Though it wasnt. It appeared to be a giant wooden Xerneus of the sorts laying down... Covered in moss, leaves, and few flowers sprouted...
Venus went and layed beside the Xerneus...
"Happy mother's day Opa... I've missed you... I'm doing well.. I just caught a sickness of the sorts.. Though I'm thriving- heh.. Mimi still stops by every now and then.. So does Callie..."
Silence broke out..
"I wish.. I wish you are here... I wish I could just talk to you again Opa... But... This- this is nice... Just sitting here with you, like we used to..."
