bob's common white lie is that he's seen a movie when he hasn't. sometimes he just knows a lot about a movie but he hasn't seen it but that's too many words, and other times its easier to say yes than get hounded

romeo's phone has a crack in one of the corners but he tries hard to make sure his phone is crack and scratch free otherwise

mark, jen, bobby, and cathy have no cracks or scratches on their phones

holly has a slider phone and that thing has withstood so much there's scratches everywhere but no cracks

tadashi's phone has no cracks but it's also just got weird little enhancements and features on it that he's done himself

baymax has no phone but he has a call making feature and can host video calls

buttercup through all of middle school had a flip phone held together by tape alone. it fell out of her pocket nearly every time she went flying or skateboarding

if bradley had a bigger memory of his parents together he would absolutely believe in true love. carole often described it as true love in stories but it’s not the sort of thing that he took very literally. he’s seen a lot of failed relationships in his life and i think he just sees love as something that’s work and patience and a commitment which also goes hand in hand with why he’s had not many romantic relationships. he does believe in great loves, he thinks his partners are the loves of his life but true love is a little fairytale-ish in his understanding of it. if you asked him to define it he would probably explain it using a fairytale example. he also thinks it implies some sort of limit or correctness and doesn’t think anyones limited to one true love in the sense that you can find a great love with someone else

cathy believes a lot of things are meant to be and they happen how they’re supposed to with the exception of great tragedy and loss of lives. this more so applies to job loss, relationships, meeting people, falling out of touch, etc

cathy doesn’t believe in love being meant to be or that somebody has a true love in that regard. she doesn’t think things like that are accidental. she thinks love is the sort of thing you work towards and you make it together. you are actively loving and tending to that love. she believes in love on purpose and existing with so much love that there never is any confusion about its presence

birthdays: bradleys is june 27, emmett and neal are both march 21, jennifer’s is november 13th (first appearance) annnd that’s all I know

i get besotted with the most random men 😭 have some gender neutral mark/reader hc bc there's so little gender neutral stuff in this fandom

Regressor Mark Watney Headcanons (The Martian)

Thank you to Anon for suggesting! I went with the film version - the book is still on my reading list. Hope you like it! :)

Heads up, there are mentions of trauma regression in these headcanons.

Mark has always been childish, but he never really experienced regression before Mars. Once he removed the antenna and had a minute to actually catch his breath, he realized how truly alone he was and he regressed from fear and continuing pain. For several hours he just sat at the desk, feeling stuck in that fear. Even after he made his initial video log, he continued dipping in and out of that headspace for the next few days.

But in addition to always being childish, Mark has always been a problem-solver. After deciding he was going to get off of Mars, he was able to push back the depressive regression, which made work easier… until the hydrogen explosion. After that, Mark decided he needed a better system for relaxing, because constant stress leads to dangerous mistakes. So he decided to curl up in his bunk for an hour and let his brain wander the way it had been doing while he was recovering from his wound. Because he actually had a plan at this point, his headspace wasn’t as frightening; where he expected to spend the hour catatonic, he ended up singing to himself and tapping a rhythm on the wall.

After that, he set aside “chill time” every evening. He very rarely regressed involuntarily, so he was able to get his work done during the daylight hours and then have some regression time before he went to sleep.

One of the only things that can cause him to regress involuntarily is storms. After the accident, any kind of storm is terrifying for him, and he regresses to a much younger age than he normally does.

He definitely liked to imagine that the Fonz was hanging out with him, and maybe even looking after him in some way - especially when he’s upset.

He loves being right about things, being the best at things, and when he regressed in the evenings he would often wander the Hab and point out the things he had done during the working day, and loudly declare “I did that! I’d like to see somebody else do that like I did!”

Every once in a while he’d have “chill time” during the day, and he’d go outside to dig in the sand or lumber around like a martian monster.

He definitely throws tantrums when he’s angry; sometimes he punches walls, sometimes he pouts and does things he knows he shouldn’t be doing, but either way he usually feels calmer afterwards.

Mark considered telling NASA about what was going on, but he decided they didn’t need to know right then. The scientists were already trying to tel HIM, the planet’s VERY BEST FARMER, how to grow potatoes; he didn’t want somebody telling him how he was supposed to psychologically cope on a deserted planet.

But once he was safely on board the Hermes, he did mention it to a NASA psychiatrist, who told him it was a very normal response to extreme stress and not something he needed to worry about. The rest of the Hermes crew almost wish the doctor hadn’t told him that, because being trapped in closed quarters with a regressed Mark can be a test of patience.

(But seriously, they were just happy he was with them; and if regressing made things easier for him, you better believe they were gonna baby the crud out of that guy.)

Dr. Christopher Beck is a canon character from The Martian. His portrayal is primarily pulled from headcanons and a mix of book and film influences. He's a Yale University graduate, a licensed medical doctor, astronaut, flight surgeon, biologist, and EVA specialist. Unless writing with a Beth Johanssen muse, that relationship was purely platonic. All details vary based on verse, and I'm happy to write him into crossovers or AUs.

hey, big fan of your blog, it's absolutely delightful and you seem like a sweetheart. i was wondering something…

when you're reading a book do you ever picture any of your favorite actors as the characters or come up with your own idea of how they may look like in your head based on the descriptions ? and say if the book has been adapted do you then picture the characters as that particular actor portraying them?

idk annoyingly I find it quite difficult to get whumperflies from books so picturing my fav actors as the characters kinda helps with that

Ohh good question! It depends. If it's a book that got a movie or tv show adaptation and I saw that first then the actor who played the characters typically become the only mental image I've got or takes over any previous mental image I had before. Like Matt Damon became Mark Watney after I saw the movie. But if I've only got the book then my brain tends to conjure it's own image of the characters that are not based on any actor. It comes up with it's own image based on character descriptions and more often, personalities. For instance I have my own imagining of how the characters look from one of my favorite books: A Long Way From A Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. If it was ever turned into a tv show or movie whoever they chose to play the characters would probably take over my own mental images. I've never tried to image my favorite actors as my fav book characters to see if i like the whump more. Now I'm curious lol. Oh wait! I did once have an actor headcanon of a character. I actually pictured Richard Rankin as Roger MacKenzie in Outlander looooong before he was actually cast as Roger. That was a glorious day when I learned my mental headcanon was coming true. truly amazing.

But also, it's The Martian again, and my personal headcanon is that Mark Watney is not a very good singer. Plus my voice sounds lower like this. Nowhere near low enough to pass for a dude I don't think, but hey, I'll take what I can get. I am so not a voice actor.
