The Chantels were a pop music group and were the second African-American girl group to enjoy nationwide success in the United States, preceded by The Bobbettes. The group was established in the early 1950s by students attending St. Anthony of Padua Church and school in the Bronx. The original five members consisted of Arlene Smith (lead) (October 5, 1941), Sonia Goring Wilson (born Millicent Goring) (1940), Renée Minus White (1943), Jackie Landry Jackson (May 22, 1941 – December 23, 1997) and Lois Harris (1940). They derived their name from that of Jane Frances de Chantal.

She hadn’t been able to stand it.

Carrie had left the house a little while ago following the conclusion of dinner, excusing herself for some fresh air, although in reality, she just wanted to get away from her brother and Millicent. She had nothing against either of them, she was quite glad that Henry was getting to spend time with his friend again.

It was the blushing and bashful way he acted around her that had triggered her memories of that night with Clyde, and she’d soon began to grow incredibly bitter. Had kept walking through the snow, not too far from the house, but far enough to give herself some space.

It was...frustrating. It really was, and the worst part was, she still didn’t know why. These things came so naturally to her brother, to her parents’ even, to everyone except her. Why couldn’t she just be normal like everyone else, feel the way she was supposed to feel? Maybe she should’ve just said yes to Clyde’s offer, let him court her after all--

“Carrie?”

She blinked through her tears, looking up to see Genie standing in front of her. Her friend had been on her way to the Wakefield house to deliver her Christmas present for Carrie and to wish her a merry Christmas, but seeing her looking so despondent made her set the present aside, sit down next to her to inquire what was wrong.

Carrie hadn’t wanted to say anything at first, but she’d also been so tired of keeping all of this bottled up for so long. She’d refused to say anything to her parents, they wouldn’t have understood and thankfully they hadn’t seemed to have pestered her that much since that night. But looking at Genie’s gentle and kind face unlocked something in her, and she began to pour her heart out. She talked about Clyde’s confession, the way he’d proposed a courtship, how she was just so frustrated with herself.

“I just hate it so much, Genie, its awful. I wish I could be like my brother and my parents, or—God, I wish I could be like you!” she’d cried, earning a look of confusion in return.

“What do you mean be like me?”

“You know, the Jackson twins. I saw you talking to them that night at the bonfire--”

“Oh, that!” Genie exclaimed, and now it was Carrie’s turn to be confused. “I was only being polite, I really didn’t care for them all that much. If I were to be honest, I was hoping they’d go away so I’d have an excuse to come and find you…”

Genie’s expression softened, eyes glowing in the faint moonlight, meeting Carrie’s own misty ones. For a long, quiet moment, both girls only stared at each other, not uttering a single word. Just like it had all those years ago, Carrie’s stomach fluttered, and she felt her cheeks heating up.

Then it dawned on her.

She’d never felt that way with Clyde, because she’d always felt that way with Genie. And she’d not realized it until this exact moment.

She didn’t have to say anything, and neither did Genie, as a mutual understanding seemed to pass between them. Each drew closer, and before they knew it, they were sharing their first kiss. A gentle, warm kiss, that caused the fluttering in Carrie’s stomach to become more rapid, and her heartbeat sped up.

This was the feeling she’d been missing out on, all along, and she was so glad to have found it.
