Song Review: Lake Street Dive with Vilray - “Two of Us” (Livestream, October 2020)
As the late-stage Beatles continue their second British Invasion, Lake Street Dive dived into their lockdown vault for a rooftop rendition of “Two of Us.”
Clad in historically correct clothing with a fake bead for Bridget Kearney and Vilray standing in on guitar and whistles for now-departed LSD member Mike “McDuck” Olson (represented by cardboard cutout), this video culled from October 2020’s “Lounge around Sounds Variety Hour” contains (literal, not figurative) moving images of musicians making the best of a horrible situation.
Though they play it straight, Lake Street Dive don’t try to sound like anyone but Lake Street Dive on this little microcosm of lockdown. And they didn’t wait a half-century to release it either, which is a bonus.

Lake Street Dive diva knocks us out with her kissing prowess
Lake Street Dive bookend the show today and prove to be a big hit here at Record Box HQ. Tobin floated the band and their kick-off-the-show tune Good Kisser is a great introduction to the Boston five piece. More on Lake Street Dive later. Personal friend and country songstress Andrea Glass features at long last. Well overdue is a play from her. We have a track from her debut LP, North Wind. More used to being played alongside other Country/Americana greats on shows like the legendary Bob Harris' we hope she feels equally at home here. Bobby Womack ends his track so abruptly it causes some hilarity in the studio. However, we delve into his colourful private life and the legacy he, and his brother Cecil left. Cecil forming Womack and Womack with Sam Cooke's daughter, Bobby's step-daughter with whom he'd had an affair. All very risqué and exciting. We've also got New Music in the form of the decisive Husbands track Mexico. You can get early access to New Music from Record Box HQ here. Wax time and a pre-release Richard spins up more legendary tracks from deep in his personal crates with the sublime Urban Species feat. MC Solaar track Listen. French rap never sounded so good. Couple that with a pre-release from Goner Records, Aquarian Blood send us a teaser from their forthcoming LP. Couple that with a Record Box Classic and you're in for a musical ride without comparison. Sit down, buckle up, get them head phones on and let's give the proverbial musical bird to the outside world and enjoy each other's company for about an hour. Just a little less actually, but it's time well spent. Good Kisser Lake Street DiveNorth Wind Andrea GlassFly Me To The Moon (In Other Words) Bobby WomackMexico HusbandsListen Urban Species feat MC SolaarA Song For You Donny HathawayThere's A World Aquarian BloodRich Girl Lake Street Dive Lake Street Dive - tell us more Named after a street in Minneapolis that contains many dive bars (disreputable drinking establishment) Lake Street Dive formed in 2004. You're hearing lead singer Rachael Price here telling us all about how good she is at kissing. Backing her mighty claim is Mike Olson, Bridget Kearney, Mike Calabrese and Akie Bermiss. Respectively they play trumpet and guitar, upright bass, drums and finally keys. Keyboardist Akie Bermiss joined the band on tour in 2017 and plays on this LP. Lake Street Dive was brought into existence by a shared love to create free country music. Yes, really that. Just country music played for free. However, as Mike "McDuck" Olson states, The concept was abandoned for something that actually sounded good.Mike Olson Most members were already playing instruments at a young age and some even had classical training. However, their influences came mainly from the music they heard at home. Mainly jazz, soul and '60s rock. Lake Street Dive also all individually cite the entire Beatles discography as hugely influential. In fact Kearney wrote Hello? Goodbye! and Don't Make Me Hold Your Hand as a direct result of her love of The Beatles. Further influences on Lake Street Dive In addition to The Beatles, LSD cite Hall and Oates (heard here on the track Rich Girl), The Jackson 5, The Mamas and the Papas, Fleetwood Mac, ABBA and The Drifters. They also annually release a Halloween cover/video. You can go check out their Fun Machine EP which contains some of these covers. With this in mind, it's quite obvious Lake Street Dive don't take themselves too seriously at all. They're a fun band knocking out slick grooves and having a whole lot of fun along the way. In fact, they claim to draw on the energy of their audience and are able to pump that energy back at them and mould the atmosphere in the room We want it to sound like the Beatles and Motown had a party togetherMike Calabrese Andrea Glass roll call Richard mentioned on today's show that Andrea Glass had an incredible roll call of musicians on this recording. Well, here's some further information to fill in the gaps. The LP from which Northwind comes is Stood Under Stars, recorded, mixed and engineered at 16 Ton Studios in Nashville, Tennessee in 2007. Mastered at Yes Master, again in Nashville. Featured musicians are as follows: Acoustic Guitar - Andrea Glass, Shawn ByrneBass - Danny WhiteDrum - Paul GriffithElectric Guitar - Shawn ByrneHammond Organ - Mike WebbPiano - John Hobbs, Steve KnightSteel Guitar (lap & pedal), Resonator Guitar, Banjo - Al PerkinsVocals - Andrea Glass, Kevin Montgomery, Ashley Monroe, Andrea Zonn Read the full article

Lake Street Dive - Good Kisser
Sounds like: Rayland Baxter, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Dawes
What's so good?
Rooted in jazz, modern funk quartet Lake Street Dive formed fourteen years ago in Boston, according to an interview by Pat Moran. The band's unique name derives from a Minneapolis street once lined with dive bars and vibrating with local music talent, where guitarist/trumpeter Mike "McDuck" Olson grew up, according to Robey Martin's article. Even though they joined musical forces fourteen years ago, the band only recently decided to commit to their music full-time, which has shown to be a very fruitful arrangement. Aside from the groups funky bass lines, the full, ringing, and soulful vocals of Rachel Price prove to be an instrument of its own. This song in particular boasts a cheeky, contagious female-power ballad, with the hook celebrating female sexuality, shouting "tell him I'm a good kisser!" Lake Street Dive is currently on tour, and several of their dates are with Madisen Ward and The Mama Bear!

Mike Olson Leaves Lake Street Dive
- “It is time for a change,” guitarist/trumpeter says
Lake Street Dive is hanging out the help-wanted sign.
Guitarist/trumpeter Mike “McDuck” Olson is leaving the band. He is the first of the founding quartet to quit, through the group, which plans to continue, added keyboardist Akie Bermiss after releasing 2018’s Free Yourself Up.
“After 16 years playing in Lake Street Dive, it is time for a change,” Olson said in statement on social media. “I’m going to hang up my trumpet, and let someone else take a turn on the tour bus.”
Olson said the band, which hasn’t commented separately, “isn’t going anywhere,” news he deemed “actually really awesome.”
His departure comes just after the release of the weak 2021 LP, Obviously, and just before Lake Street Dive’s June 4 return to the concert stage after a long, pandemic-related layoff.
No replacement has been named.
“The next time Lake Street Dive is in town, maybe I’ll see you, but in the crowd this time,” Olson said. “I know it’s going to be a great show.”

Sleep Deprived Music Review: Lake Street Dive
Sleep Deprived Music Review: Lake Street Dive
The album that I’m in love with this week is Side Pony by Lake Street Dive. NOT drive people! D-I-V-E!
The band members are Rachael Price (lead vocals), Mike “McDuck” Olson (trumpet, guitar), Bridget Kearney (upright bass), and Mike Calabrese (drums).
It’s jazzy, bluesy and a little old school R & B. It’s everything that I’ve been looking for lately. It will make you wish you had someone to…

Welcome to Music Monday when we bring you fun songs with jewelry, gemstones or precious metals in the title or lyrics. Today, lead singer Rachael Price of Lake Street Dive delivers some sassy, unambiguous straight talk to aggressive males in the group’s 2014 ditty, “Wedding Band.”
When introducing the song during live performances, Price jokes that what they’re about to perform is a PSA (public service announcement) — from the gals in the band to a select group of guys in the audience.
She sings, “If you’re married, wear a wedding band / There’s no need for you to whisper in my ear / When you can say it with your hand / If you’re gonna go breakin’ my heart / There’s no need for you to let it linger / When you can say it with your finger / If you’re married, baby, wear a wedding band.”
Written by bassist Bridget Kearney, “Wedding Band” is an amusing sub-two-minute sing-along that showcases Price’s rich and sultry voice. Her stylings have been favorably compared to those of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. A reviewer for chicagoreader.com went a step farther, characterizing Price as “one of the greatest American singers alive.”
Founded at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston in 2004, Lake Street Dive gets its name from a specific area within the hometown of trumpeter Mike “McDuck” Olson. In his hometown of Minneapolis, Lake Street is famous for its dive bars.
The band members of Lake Street Dive were all influenced by classic pop, soul and jazz. Noted drummer Mike Calabrese, “We want it to sound like the Beatles and Motown had a party together.”
The band got its big break when a bluesy cover of The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” was posted on Reddit by an anonymous fan. Soon, the video earned more than a million views and actor Kevin Bacon was tweeting about it.
“There’s a nameless faceless hero of our band, who put it on there and everything changed overnight,” Price told pastemagazine.com. “The Internet is a rocket ship to fame.”
The Brooklyn-based band will be spending the next few months touring New Hampshire, Upstate New York, Connecticut, Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Ontario.
Please check out the video of Lake Street Dive’s live performance of “Wedding Band.” The lyrics are below if you’d like to sing along…
“Wedding Band” Written by Bridget Kearney. Performed by Lake Street Dive.
If you’re married, wear a wedding band There’s no need for you to whisper in my ear When you can say it with your hand If you’re gonna go breakin’ my heart There’s no need for you to let it linger When you can say it with your finger If you’re married, baby, wear a wedding band
You’ve got somebody That’ll love you forever already (already) And you owe it to her, and you owe it to me To hold steady
If you’re married, wear a wedding band There’s no need for you to whisper in my ear When you can say it with your hand If you’re gonna go breakin’ my heart There’s no need for you to let it linger When you can say it with your finger
If you’re married, baby, wear a wedding… Married, baby, wear a wedding… Married, baby, wear a wedding band
