Notes:
Fantastic capture of this incredibly immersive and beautiful production. there is a bar in the bottom right corner of the screen that doesn't take away except for one moment where Gandalf and Frodo are talking on the stairs in act one, but overall I worked around it and you can always see Frodo and sometimes Gandalf. At points people are in the audience and I wasn't able to capture them but you can always hear them and I do my best to always try to make sure to capture anything in the audience that I could. Some washout and shakiness throughout.

Beautiful Capture of Abe, Larkin and Haley's last performance with the company. Canto a Vozes de Mulheres
Poéticas do Canto Polifónico
vimeo

Father figure!Trevor Philips x De Santa!Reader
Y/F/N = Your fake name.
----------------------------------------------
Ever since you could remember, you had been living out in Sandy Shores with Trevor Phillips. You didn't much know of your actual parents, but you knew they fought. A lot. Your mother was involved in the stripper business, and your father was a notorious robber. Whatever they were like, one day, while you were out alone in the snow, Trevor found and ran away with you.
And you never saw your family again.
Today, you walked into the trailer you and Trevor shared covered in blood, finding Wade there. After a few seconds silence, you explained, "Oh, uh, don't worry, none of this is mine." Wade replied, "OK...You seen Trevor?" You shook your head, and went to shower. After a quick 10 minutes, you left the trailer with Wade, only to find Trevor walking up to the porch, causing Wade to hide.
"Heya, dad," you said, before looking to Wade, as Trevor said to him, "Get back here...You're not even hidden. Have you got it?" Wade then defeatedly said, "I've been trying, Trevor." Trevor then gestured to him to climb up, only to punch him as he did, causing you to laugh. "Ah, so, uh, I thought you were locating Michael Townley," you asked.
"There's two Michael Townley's living in Los Santos. One is 83 and the other one is in Kindergarten. I asked her to put him on the phone just to be safe...She threatened to call the cops. I ain't no molester, Y/N!" Trevor angrily respon to Wade with, "Shut up before I molest you, alright! Now, is there anything else?" Wade slowly got to his feet and responded, "I-I looked through the photo directory. I did find a Michael De Santa. About the right age, married with two kids."
"What's his wife's name?", asked Trevor.
"...Amanda."
You and Trevor knew it was Michael.
"It's him. I'll wait in the truck," you said, getting into Trevor's truck. After another few minutes of talking between Trevor, Wade and Ron, all of you except for Ron set off for the trailer park of the Lost MC, set to tie up a loose end. "So, how we doing this?", you asked, causing Trevor to reply, "We're gonna be giving them quite the explosive suprise, my dear son/daughter/child." You were quick to catch the hint.
"Um...that might be nice, but, y'know, I'm starting to get a little wet over here," said Wade, as rain started to pour as Trevor drove. "Hey, so am I, and I ain't complaining," you responded, causing Trevor to laugh. After a few more minutes of driving, you pulled up just outside the Lost MC base. Trevor said, "Wait here, kiddies. Daddy's going to work."
Later...
You and Wade were talking when multiple trailers were blown up, catching you both off guard. As you looked to the scene, you spotted Trevor walking back, a smile on his face. As he got into the truck, you noted, "Well, the Lost are gonna be living up to their name." Trevor nodded, and said, "That they are, kid. Now, let's waste no more time. Let's go find my old buddy." And with that, you three set off on the drive to Los Santos.
"This Michael Townley must've pissed you off real bad, if you wanna find him so much," said Wade. "He didn't piss me off. The guys that killed him, the government bureau. They pissed me off," replied Trevor, before he noticed a bit of blood on your knuckles. "The fuck happened?", he asked, causing you to reply, "Oh, uh, some homophobe was preaching. I preached into his face." Trevor smiled.
As the drive continued, you could sense Wade getting bored. Your sense of compassion took over, and you asked, "Hey, Wade, I got a story if you wanna hear it." Wade immediately, joyfully said, "I like stories!" You smiled and said, "Of course you do. This one's about a troll named...Y/F/N."
"Y/F/N was born to two other, shittier trolls named Amy and Michelle. Amy worked at a strip joint before and Michelle robbed people from under his bridge. Now, Y/F/N wasn't happy. Amy and Michelle argued a lot, and Y/F/N's siblings, James and Trishie, weren't any better. One day, when little Y/F/N was five years old, and left alone in the cold, Y/P ran into a boy named...Trisha. He ran way with Y/F/N, away from the snow, away from the police, away from everything."
"And they lived happily ever after?", asked Wade, to which you answered, "In a way. But the details are for another day." As you replied, you spotted it. The big sprawl of fake and greed.
Los Santos.
You drove to a nearby hill. As you pulled up, you and Trevor got out and walked to the edge, and Trevor said, "So, Michael...this is where dead men come back to life, hmm?" You followed up with, "...Nearly 10 years. Oh, but you didn't even bother looking, did ya, father?...You fucking fuck!" Trevor finished with, "I grieved for you! You weren't even fucking dead...you were my best friend. Well, guess who's coming to shit on your doorstep, you fuck!" With that, you both walked back to the truck, and drove off.
"My cousin lives in a condo in Vespucci Beach," said Wade. You nodded, and you were headed there. "So, Y/N, what you gonna have to say to your old pops when you see him again?", asked Trevor. You thought for a second, before saying, "Well, he certainly won't like my words, that's for fucking sure."
And after another drive, you arrived at the condo. Wade got out and quickly made his way to the front door, you and Trevor not too far behind. "Floyd, it's me, Wade!" "Who?" "Me, Wade, your cousin!" "Who?"
Trevor then kicked the door open, knocking over Floyd in the process.
"Your cousin! Fuck! He's come to visit you, you rude fuck." You three made your way inside. You looked around, and told Floyd, "Nice place. Now you got any Sprunk, E-Cola, shit like that?" Floyd gestured to the fridge, in which you found a can of Sprunk, and swigged it down.
You were gonna need the energy for what you and Trevor had planned.
THE END.

GTA V Gender Bent Headcanons
I don't know why but I have been thinking SO much about fem Michael and Trevor recently. they are so beautiful and amazing to me, so I thought I'd share my thoughts on all three of the main characters as women and what they're like cause they're so <3
Michael/Michelle
goes more by M/Em than anything else
she is 🏳️‍⚧️
dark hair a bit past her shoulders, slightly wavy. she ties it back into buns and ponytails when working but she likes it down for a more casual look
I think in North Yankton she would've worn a lot of jeans and button ups, open with a tanktop underneath. you get to see some breast without it being too showy. also works as more casual wear in Los Santos
when she gets her breasts done, she goes for a c-cup
always felt like something was off with her body, but it took her a while to fully process that she wanted to look like the women she liked almost as much as she wanted to fuck them
the biological parent of both Jimmy & Tracey. she never gets bottom surgery, and hasn't started estrogen yet when she starts seeing Amanda
in Los Santos she tends to wear a similar version of Michael's default outfit, but lose the jacket. just grey pants and a white button up, with diamond earrings and a bracelet as a quiet show of wealth
radiates MILF energy!
is socially transitioning when she meets T, still working to earn enough for better clothes and breast implants. their shared identity throws them even closer as friends
simple makeup, usually just mascara and pink lipstick. wine red lipstick if she's feeling fancy
kids call her M too, short for mom and helps to distinguish from Amanda
a bit more insecure when she first meets Amanda, but she and T still go to strip clubs and when a beautiful woman offers her a dance, how can she resist?
incredibly relieved when Amanda shrugs and says M's nothing she hasn't seen before, and she still wants her
starts estrogen a bit after Jimmy's born when she starts to worry more about how she looks to people outside their family
on special occasions, she wears a long, blue dress with a deep neckline that hugs her curves and emphasizes her stomach
T comments on how stuffed into it she looks, but she secretly likes it quite a bit
T still calls her Sugar Tits and comments that the best part about M's weight gain is that they've gotten even bigger
T also definitely comments on how between M and Amanda, it’s shocking Amanda’s the one who gave birth to two kids when M’s the one who looks it
just the whole the whole “you used to be fatter, nice new tits by the way” and then instead of focusing on Jimmy it’s straight to M like “and you used to be a lot thinner… at least your tits look amazing”
the only time she's taller than T is in heels and she does try to wear them a fair bit
Trevor/Trisha
might go by Trisha but honestly likes being called Trevor too, just do not fuck up her pronouns and any name is really fine
also 🏳️‍⚧️
a lot of people refer to her solely as T Philips which leads to a lot of people making a lot of very incorrect assumptions about the gender of the person behind all these drugs
doesn't get any sort of breast implants, preferring to stick with the flat chested look
her hair isn't receding quite as badly but it is forming a definite widow's peak. it just brushes her shoulders because anything beyond that starts to annoy her
unsure about her preference on bottom surgery... she probably just skips it altogether, and she definitely refers to having a dick as a way to make straight men uncomfortable
lived in denial of her feelings for a long time, though she always enjoyed playing with her mother's dresses as a kid. finally she realizes that while her body itself isn't so bad, she needs new gender presentation
definitely jealous of Amanda because M if you're going to be a lesbian, T is right here!!!
T herself is definitely some variant of bi/pan/unlabeled
her daily wear is fairly similar to Trevor's in game. a stained, white t and jeans with combat boots are an easy go-to. she likes tanks and cut-offs when it's really hot out
dresses are obviously a huge yes but typically only for certain moods. she has a red, knee-length body hugging dress for her fancier moments
some of her boots do have the slightest heel (thinking of how Doc Martens are) but she could never walk in high heels like M does
Wade and Ron are definitely both in awe of her beauty but too scared of her to really do anything
probably awakens a lot of people to a lot of feelings with a combination of fear and horniness
Trevor already cuffs his jeans and wears combat boots in the game but I just need to point out how queer that is!!!
her ears are pierced--including a DIY helix she's lucky isn't infected--and she wears little kitschy things she picks up from wherever
when she can be fucked to, I think she’d enjoy doing eyeshadow and lipstick. it’s usually incredibly messy cause she often fucks it up in her daily tasks, and she usually gives up on doing a very good job when it starts taking longer than a few minutes
technically Auntie T now but I think she kinda likes Mama T? she especially calls herself that to F after deciding she and M are her new moms
Franklin/Frankie
doesn't mind being called Frank for short, but real ones do call her Frankie
do I even need to say it? 🏳️‍⚧️
and I mean… M, T, F… it was right there
she has a very short afro
has probably physically transitioned the most
her breasts are on the smaller side and she often hides them under her outfits
never wears dresses. very tomboy-ish
has an affinity for suits, and loves a full three-piece in bright colours or fabrics. definitely her biggest splurge when she starts getting money
also a fairly big sneaker head, matches them to her outfits
her casual wear tends to be oversized tops and jeans, though there's a clear sense of fashion there, rather than just trying to hide
that green letterman Franklin has.... she throws that over a lot of tops
when she does wear more tanks or short sleeves, her arms are incredibly well-muscled
wears a simple gold chain and gold hoops
Lamar supports her through her transition. he hypes her UP but ultimately they’re just friends
realizes her identity after meeting some butches towards the end of high school and feeling a sort of draw to them that she's never felt in anything. the more she understands being masculine in a feminine sort of way rather than just being masculine as a man, the more right it feels
chapstick queen
sometimes paints her nails green. Lamar helps
idk I think Lamar probably still roasts her out of annoyance at not getting invited in, but I think her pure butch swag helps her to avoid the yee-yee ass haircut comment. call her what you want but her hair is already perfect, leave her be
is trying to get some bitches on her and trust me there are women in the neighbourhood lusting, but the stars have not yet aligned
while T and M are her queer moms and offer some wisdom, I think she's actually the most up-to-date on like... current queer lingo and goings on in the community? there's a 95% chance one or both of the others kinda lost the plot after transsexual and just use that

Details about the Mci’s in my Au
Personalities:
Gabriel Green
Standard little brother type. He is incredibly rambunctious and energetic toddler with a highly active imagination who loves to draw and do other crafts. He also has a habit of bringing animals inside his house, much to the annoyance of his mom and Jeremy
Jeremy Green
A very smart kid, but is very bad at rational thinking. He really likes space exploration and wants to be an astronaut. He also acts more mature than he actually is
Susie Smith
Very stereotypical girly girl who loves all things cute, princess related, and pink. She has a very big heart, especially when it comes to animals and babies. She is highly emotional and gets upset over small things, though she is only five, and is yet to face any real problems.* she’s kinda spoiled
Fritz Santos
Definitely a Wild Child. He acts, talks, and looks like a pirate, even calling himself “Captain Fritz” he often acts out at school, his intentions are always good, however. He loves to play imagination games, especially if they involve pirates of the ocean.
Cassidy Guerra
A very, very, very grumpy kid. She can be sweet if you can look past the sarcasm and biting however. Her anger was increased when Evan died, so her reactions became a lot more intense if angered. She is also super loyal, and trusting.
Family and home life
Jeremy and Gabriel
They both live with their mom, Michelle(38), their older sisters Carly(13) and Felicia(12), and Gabriel’s dad Marcus(40). All three children have different dads, Carly and Felicia’s dad being Michelle’s ex husband’s , and Jeremy being her former boyfriends. They live in a somewhat small house. Jeremy and Gabriel share a room, and the attic was turned into a room for Carly and Felicia. They are quite close to each other because of this, Jeremy feeling very protective of Gabe.
Susie
Susie comes from a big Mormon family, having seven sisters. Her family includes her mom Francis(40), her dad David(43), her sisters Kathrine “Katie”(16), Samantha(14), Linny(10), Grace(8), Ruby(6), May(3) and Tilly(1). She was raised very wealthy, as her father was a great banker. She was little Miss Hurricane in 1984 when she was 4, due to this, her death and funeral were a big deal compared to the other kids. She was raised in a huge house, it was three stories and had a in ground pool.
Fritz
His life was very vibrant, being raised by many eccentric aunts and uncles, but his family was his father Pedro(34) his “best friend” Damien(34), and Damien’s daughter Christie(9) and his older brothers Jose(12) and Davi(9). His father was the owner of the local pub JR’s, which was frequented by William. They all lived in a rather large apartment above the building. The other part of his family included his mom Beatriz, her “first mate” Frida, and her many, many crew mates on their boat, which was a pirate themed entertainment boat restaurant that Fazbear Entertainment considered an enemy. His life was vibrant and filled with color due to this odd upbringing
Cassidy
Cassidy grew up on a trailer park with her mom Barbra(40), her father Pharrell(38), and her two siblings Hope(17) and Andrew(14). Due to them not having much, their lives were hectic. It’s also worth noting that Barbra was a chain smoker and spent her government aid money on cigarettes. Their father was a good dad, he loved his kids very much.
How William lured them:
Susie
Susie had just gotten a puppy, unfortunately Samantha left the fence open, the dog got out, and was hit by Williams car. Susie saw the whole thing and was traumatized. William used this to his advantage, and promised that he had her dog, but the only thing g that was promised was her death.
Fritz
Fritz had been visiting the restaurant on a school field trip,William saw the whole thing as an opportunity. Fritz was stating that he was going to save the recently disappeared Susie from her capture, so William then told him he had her.
Gabriel
William simply offered the kid Candy, he had not been taught about stranger danger yet.
Jeremy
Jeremy had gone looking for Gabriel, this is why Jeremy died fighting, as he saw that he had killed his brother.
Cassidy
Cassidy was having a birthday party at Freddy’s, and no one showed up. William had been observing the whole thing, and lured her in, promising her the best party she could possibly have. Which forty-ish years later, she did

Europe's Ariane 6 rocket blasted off successfully for its maiden flight on Tuesday, a live video feed showed. The success of its three-hour flight is crucial for European countries, who hope to regain independent access to space more than a year after they retired their workhorse Ariane 5 rocket.
Europe's new Ariane 6 rocket launched for the first time on Tuesday, carrying with it the continent's hopes of regaining independent access to space.
The micro-satellites were delivered one hour and six minutes after the rocket blasted off from Kourou, French Guiana. The rocket's success marks a "historic day" for Europe, announced European Space Agency chief Josef Aschbacher.
The much-delayed inaugural flight of the European Space Agency's (ESA) most powerful rocket launched smoothly into clear skies at 4pm local time (1900 GMT) from Europe's spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, an AFP correspondent observed.
Crews on the ground at the launch site, which is surrounded by jungle on the South American coast, applauded as the rocket soared into clear skies.
Ariane 6's first launch, which was originally planned for 2020, is hoped to bring an end to a difficult time for European space efforts.
Since the last flight of its workhorse predecessor, Ariane 5, a year ago, Europe has been unable to launch satellites or other missions into space without relying on rivals such as Elon Musk's US firm SpaceX.
ESA chief Josef Aschbacher said it was a "very important moment for Europe".
"We are re-establishing independent access to space for Europe," he said just before the launch.
Earlier Tuesday, the giant metal structure housing the rocket called the "mobile gantry" was rolled away, unsheathing the 56-metre (183 feet) behemoth in light rain, an AFP journalist observed.
A 10am forecast said that "Weather is GO for fuelling", the ESA said on X.
This gave the green light for filling the rocket's tanks with the liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen that will propel it into space.
From that point, any physical intervention would force the tanks to be emptied, requiring a 48-hour launch postponement, the ESA's launch base project manager Michel Rizzi said.
Rocket crisis
Many will be nervously watching the launch, hoping it can bring an end to a difficult era for European space efforts.
Since the last flight of the rocket's workhorse predecessor, Ariane 5, a year ago, Europe has been unable to launch satellites or other missions into space without relying on rivals such as Elon Musk's US firm SpaceX.
Historically, nearly half of the first launches of new rockets have ended in failure.
That includes Ariane 5, which exploded moments after liftoff in 1996 – but out of its 117 launches over nearly 20 years, only one other flight would fail.
Everyone at the Kourou launch site, which is surrounded by jungle on the South American coast, is hoping history does not repeat for Ariane 6.
Tony dos Santos, the ESA's Kourou technical manager, said that teams on the ground would only be able to "breathe our first sigh of relief when the first satellites have been released" an hour and six minutes after liftoff.
The mission will be considered a success after the rocket's reusable upper stage splashes down into the Pacific Ocean.
Franck Saingou, Ariane 6 launch system architect, said there had been so many rehearsals that it all feels "routine – except this time it's the real thing".
Concealed in a nearby bunker, more than 200 experts in the launch centre will scrutinise the rocket until liftoff, ready to interrupt the countdown to solve any problems, he added.
They will be in constant contact with the Jupiter control room, the hub of communication between the teams – and data sent from the rocket.
A large number of armed forces will also watch over the launch, including three fighter jets deployed to deter any curious aircraft nearby.
Europe's 'return' to space
A successful flight would mark Europe's "return" to the space scene, said ESA space transportation director Toni Tolker-Nielsen.
Russia pulled its Soyuz rockets, long used for European launches at Kourou, after Moscow invaded Ukraine in 2022.
Later year, Europe's Vega-C light launcher was grounded due to a launch failure. Delays to Ariane 6's first flight – originally scheduled for 2020 – further compounded the crisis.
Ariane 6 is scheduled for one more launch this year, six in 2025, then eight in 2026.
The launch of Ariane 6 is the first step towards "changing the future of the European space transportation ecosystem", ESA chief Josef Aschbacher said on X.
Gareth Dorrian, a space science researcher at the UK's University of Birmingham, told AFP that "the first launch of any new rocket is always fraught".
But Ariane 5 started with explosive failure and "went on to become one of the most successful launchers in history", he added.

NPR: Two missing men, one deputy, zero charged. What happened?
Tumblr media
Marcia Williams reacts after an unidentified person comes forward with information about the disappearances during a press conference in 2013.
William DeShazer/Naples Daily News
The Last Ride investigates a disturbing mystery, examines systemic problems in media and policing and illuminates the deep wounds that are left when no one is held accountable. Listen to The Last Ride on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.
Nearly two decades ago, I was searching through my Southwest Florida newspaper's archives and spotted this tragic headline:
Has anyone seen my son?
It topped a 2004 letter to the editor written by Marcia Williams.
Her letter read, in part:
The letter, buried on page D17 of the Naples Daily News, was stunning for many reasons.
Tumblr media
Steven Calkins is seen in 1999, at the scene where a boat fell off a trailer and blocked traffic. Michel Fortier/Naples Daily News hide caption
Three months earlier, in October 2003, on the same street in Naples, Felipe Santos vanished after getting into the same deputy's patrol car. Both men were driving illegally. Instead of taking them to jail, Calkins said he dropped them off at different Circle-K stores. But his stories could never be backed up.
Marcia Williams didn't know about the disappearance of Felipe Santos when she wrote the letter, but her plea helped to connect the hurting families.
As the story coalesced — two missing men, one deputy, zero charged — another stunning aspect was that there was so little media coverage. It was straight out of the "missing white woman syndrome" lesson from journalism school on how media often fail missing people of color while saturating coverage on young, pretty missing white women.
The Last Ride is a podcast that examines systemic problems in media and policing and illuminates the deep wounds that are left when no one is held accountable. Listen on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.
The letter from Terrance's mother led to one of my first investigative stories as a young reporter. I've followed the mystery throughout my career. Over the years, my colleagues and I sought to tell the haunting story of these Florida disappearances in a more impactful way, especially once previously confidential audio and case notes were released.
The disappearances gnawed at the families, the police, us, and our community. Maybe a podcast could get the cases to more people? Spur new ideas? Jostle memories?
The Last Ride, an eight-episode deep dive into the mystery, is the result.
'I'm not going to give up'
I met Marcia Williams in 2005.
When I interviewed her, I recall seeing boxes of her son's belongings in her Naples home. A suede coat. A Ralph Lauren shirt with the tag still attached. All just left behind. "I pray every night. I know God is tired of me," she said then. "I'm not going to give up."

I also interviewed Felipe Santos' father. He told me Felipe came to the United States from Mexico at 19 with dreams of making money and starting a family. And, in the news reports I've dug up, I still look to be the last reporter who interviewed Calkins.
I think he only talked to me back then because I dropped in the fact that we share a hometown in rural Illinois.
"I didn't do anything wrong," he told me as his children played in the yard of his Naples home.
Struggling to get attention on the case
In the many years since, there have been several major developments.
Filmmaker Tyler Perry became an advocate for the families of the missing men and offered a reward for tips. Perry stood with Marcia Williams at a 2018 press conference and underscored how hard it was to draw media interest to the disappearances.
"When somebody goes missing and they are a blue-eyed, blonde woman, it's all over the news," Perry said at the time. "This woman has been struggling privately for many, many years just to get attention."
Tumblr media
Media mogul Tyler Perry, left, holds the hand of Terrance Williams' mother, Marcia Williams. At the time, Perry offered a $100,000 reward for information solving the missing persons case of Terrance Williams and Felipe Santos. He later increased the offer to $200,000.
William DeShazer/Naples Daily News
When we were putting together The Last Ride, the 2021 disappearance of 22-year-old Gabby Petito dominated headlines. Stories of her disappearance, the discovery of her remains and the search for her boyfriend, who killed her and then himself, were immediate and nonstop.
The difference in coverage between her disappearance and the missing men was stark.
In 2022, The Columbia Journalism Review came out with a tool that uses data to analyze such disparities. Many people in the media are aware of these disparities but haven't bothered or figured out how to fix them.
Most missing people are found quickly. So, it's understandable that the media doesn't cover all of them. Yet I have firsthand experience of witnessing when they — we — should have.
The pursuit for answers
Tumblr media

Nicole Raucheisen/Naples Daily News
Attorney Ben Crump announced the suit at the 2018 Naples press conference: "This lawsuit is going to formally say, what people have been informally saying, and that is that he intentionally murdered Terrance Williams and Felipe Santos."
Around that time, my colleagues and I started reporting The Last Ride. Veteran reporters Ryan Mills and Melanie Payne were just as haunted by the cases. Why were they never solved? Did law enforcement drop the ball? Did we?
Our pursuit of answers went from Florida to Tennessee to Illinois to Iowa. We interviewed investigators, witnesses, Tyler Perry, Ben Crump and advocates and relatives of the missing men. We scrutinized hundreds of pages of records. And we followed the civil suit to its abrupt conclusion. Steven Calkins successfully fought the suit. The podcast features compelling court audio, dramatic polygraphs and questioning of Calkins.
This mystery began as a local story, but the issues are universal.
Janine Zeitlin is the host of The Last Ride and an award-winning Florida journalist.
The Last Ride is distributed by the NPR Network, reported by veteran journalists with the Naples Daily News and The Fort Myers News-Press, part of the USA Today Network, and produced in partnership with WGCU Public Media. Listen on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

{ Michelle Motam } 🌷 https://www.instagram.com/p/Ckja9OmOg9A/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

My Alternative 96th Academy Awards
This is an exercise that has not appeared on this blog since 2019 for the 91st ceremony. But I wanted to revive it. So what would tomorrow's Academy Awards ceremony looked like if I determined all the nominees and the winners? This is my ideal world, my alternative universe, if you will. Prepare for controversy, and my ambivalence towards Poor Things and The Zone of Interest (which doesn't get nominated at all here).
It's been a while since I've done this, so there might be some quirks newer followers are less familiar with. Most notably, if you see a three letter abbreviation anywhere, that indicates a movie not in the English language and indicates the country/countries of origin based on their three-letter FIFA code of all things.
Without further ado!
96th Academy Awards – March 10, 2024 Dolby Theatre – Hollywood, Los Angeles, California Host: Jimmy Kimmel Broadcaster: ABC
Best Picture: KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON
Anatomy of a Fall (FRA), Marie-Ange Luciani and David Thion (Neon/Le Pacte)
Barbie, David Heyman, Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley,  and Robbie Brenner (Warner Bros.)
The Holdovers, Mark Johnson (Focus/Universal)
Killers of the Flower Moon, Dan Friedkin, Bradley Thomas, Martin Scorsese, and Daniel Lupi (Apple/Paramount)
Oppenheimer, Emma Thomas, Charles Roven, and Christopher Nolan (Universal)
Past Lives, David Hinojosa, Christina Vachon, and Pamela Koffler (A24)
Robot Dreams (ESP/FRA), Ibon Cormenzana, Ignasi Estapé, Sandra Tapia, Jérôme Vidal, and Pablo Berger (Neon/Bteam Pictures/Wild Bunch)
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Christina Steinberg (Sony Pictures Animation/Columbia)
The Taste of Things (FRA), Olivier Delbosc (Gaumont)
20 Days in Mariupol (UKR), Raney Aronson-Rath, Mstyslav Chernov, Derl McCrudden, and Michelle Mizner (Associated Press/Public Broadcasting Service)
Am I nuts? A documentary (there's nothing in the rules that say they can't be nominated for Best Picture)? Why not? TWO animated features? Let alone a movie that almost nobody outside of Europe has seen? Well I've seen Robot Dreams, and it is one of the best 2023 release I saw all year.
My full thoughts on my favored film, Killers of the Flower Moon, can be found in my write-up here.
Six of the current Best Picture nominees keep their nomination. American Fiction, Maestro, Poor Things, and The Zone of Interest are dropped. In their place go Robot Dreams, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Taste of Things, and 20 Days in Mariupol. I strongly considered replacing Barbie, but decided against it. Yes, I believe there were more than ten movies better than Barbie this year. But I richly *enjoyed* Barbie, and appreciate its instant spot in film history. It stays in.
Best Director
Joaquin Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer
Martin Scorsese, Killers of the Flower Moon
Trần Anh Hùng, The Taste of Things
Justine Triet, Anatomy of a Fall
Folks are saying Martin Scorsese is not nearly as innovative as he used to be. Au contraire, I say. Killers of the Flower Moon exemplifies tons of personal and artistic growth for him... and that extremely risky ending pays off dividends. As a Nolan skeptic, I am indeed impressed with his work on Oppenheimer, but it's not the "best" for me this year.
Those familiar with my affiliation with Viet Film Fest might detect some bias, but hell The Taste of Things was gorgeous, folks.
Best Actor
Bradley Cooper, Maestro
Colman Domingo, Rustin
Paul Giamatti, The Holdovers
Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer
Jeffrey Wright, American Fiction
It's a toss-up to me. But, having to choose one, I'll go for a man who is probably overdue.
Best Actress
Lily Gladstone, Killers of the Flower Moon
Sandra Hüller, Anatomy of a Fall
Alma Pöysti, Fallen Leaves (FIN)
Margot Robbie, Barbie
Emma Stone, Poor Things
The first acting change from the actual Oscars appears here, with Finnish actress Alma Pöysti replacing Annette Bening in Nyad. But this should be Lily Gladstone's, who would justly be making a lot of history here.
And yes, Barbie fans... I relent. Margot Robbie makes my final cut.
Best Supporting Actor
Sterling K. Brown, American Fiction
Robert De Niro, Killers of the Flower Moon
Robert Downey Jr., Oppenheimer
Ryan Gosling, Barbie
Dominic Sessa, The Holdovers
I don't think RDJ should be sweeping the season as he has. I think it's a lot closer between all of these fellows than it actually has been. Disagree with me all you want, but I think De Niro was truly menacing in KOTFM. And he didn't need any deaging this time, either!
Best Supporting Actress
Juliette Binoche, The Taste of Things
Emily Blunt, Oppenheimer
Danielle Brooks, The Color Purple
Penélope Cruz, Ferrari
Da’Vine Joy Randolph, The Holdovers
Fine, I guess? I think Randolph's character gets cut out of The Holdovers far too soon. But I can't make the case for anyone else this year except for maybe Binoche (whom some people will complain about my placement in Supporting Actress instead of Lead Actress, but that's how the studio campaigned for her).
Best Adapted Screenplay
Pablo Berger, Robot Dreams
Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, Barbie
Cord Jefferson, American Fiction
Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer
Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese, Killers of the Flower Moon
I'm not going to second-guess the Academy on its placement of Barbie here. It's not winning in this category in any case. American Fiction is a solid, imperfect satire, and finds its due here.
Best Original Screenplay
İlker Çatak and Johannes Duncker, The Teachers’ Lounge (GER)
David Hemingson, The Holdovers
A.V. Rockwell, A Thousand and One
Celine Song, Past Lives
Justine Triet and Arthur Harari, Anatomy of a Fall
I was very, very tempted to give this to Past Lives. But in the end, my sneaking feeling that I don't quite buy the closeness - despite having not talked for so long - of the two lead characters wins out.
Anatomy of a Fall is a hell of a balancing act, domestically and legally, and wins here.
Best Animated Feature
The Boy and the Heron, Japan (GKIDS/Studio Ghibli/Toho Company)
Ernest & Celestine: A Trip to Gibberitia, France (GKIDS/StudioCanal)
Robot Dreams, Spain/France (Neon/Bteam Pictures/Wild Bunch)
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Sony Pictures Animation/Columbia)
Suzume, Japan (GKIDS/Toho Company)
Stoking the flames, but here we are! I think ATSV is slightly better than Robot Dreams as a whole, but the film lacks a resolution and obviously had access to more resources. Spider-Man will return to this category. I'm not so sure about Pablo Berger. The heartfelt and dialogue-free Robot Dreams takes it, while the Ernest & Celestine sequel and Suzume make it in place of Elemental and Nimona.
Best Documentary Feature
Bobi Wine: The People’s President (National Geographic)
The Eternal Memory, Chile (MTV Documentary Films)
Four Daughters, Tunisia/France/Germany/Saudi Arabia (Kino Lorber/Jour2Fête)
To Kill a Tiger, Canada (National Film Board of Canada)
20 Days in Mariupol, Ukraine (Associated Press/Public Broadcasting Service)
Extraordinary filmmaking and, as you can imagine, brutal to watch. It's freely available online for any American readers out there, thanks to PBS.
Best International Feature
Fallen Leaves, Finland
Society of the Snow, Spain
The Taste of Things, France
The Teachers’ Lounge, Germany
20 Days in Mariupol, Ukraine
I follow Academy rules here in terms of one movie per country.
Best Cinematography
Edward Lachman, El Conde
Rodrigo Prieto, Killers of the Flower Moon
Mathtew Libatique, Maestro
Hoyte van Hoytema, Oppenheimer
Jonathan Ricquebourg, The Taste of Things
Best Film Editing
Laurent Sénéchal, Anatomy of a Fall
Kevin Tent, The Holdovers
Thelma Schoonmaker, Killers of the Flower Moon
Jennifer Lame, Oppenheimer
Michael Andrews, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Best Original Score
Michael Giacchino, Society of the Snow
Laura Karpman, American Fiction
Robbie Robertson, Killers of the Flower Moon (posthumous nomination)
John Williams, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Hans Zimmer, The Creator
The folks who complained that Dial of Destiny was not original enough need to go 1) watch the movie and 2) listen to the score afterwards. There was a distinct lack of older Indiana Jones cues in there, and "Helena's Theme" is the best cue of 2023. Too many people online write about film scores but have little idea about what they're talking about (*cough* David Ehrlich at IndieWire *cough*).
That said, Williams doesn't win here. It's Giacchino, for a score that does a hell lot of the heavy emotional lifting in a grim movie that concludes with its real-life happy ending.
Best Original Song
“I’m Just Ken”, music and lyrics by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, Barbie
“It Never Went Away”, music and lyrics by Jon Batiste and Dan Wilson, American Symphony
“Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)”, music and lyrics by Scott George, Killers of the Flower Moon
“What Was I Made For?” music and lyrics by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, Barbie
Four nominees rather than five, because I didn't like much else that was shortlisted. This category has been my personal hell in recent years.
Best Costume Design
Jacqueline Durran, Barbie
Jacqueline West, Killers of the Flower Moon
Janty Yates and Dave Crossman, Napoleon
Ellen Mirojnick, Oppenheimer
Holly Waddington, Poor Things
Best Makeup and Hairstyling
Karen Hartley Thomas, Suzi Battersby, and Ashra Kelly-Blue, Golda
Kazu Hiro, Kay Georgiou, and Lori McCoy-Bell, Maestro
Luisa Abel, Oppenheimer
Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier, and Josh Weston, Poor Things
Ana López-Puigcerver, David Martí, and Montse Ribé, Society of the Snow
Best Production Design
Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer, Barbie
Jack Fisk and Adam Willis, Killers of the Flower Moon
Arthur Max and Elli Griff, Napoleon
Ruth De Jong and Claire Kaufman, Oppenheimer
James Price, Shona Heath, and Zsuzsa Mihalek, Poor Things
Best Sound
Ian Voigt, Erik Aadahl, Ethan Van der Ryn, Tom Ozanich, and Dean Zupancic, The Creator
Steven A. Morrow, Richard King, Jason Ruder, Tom Ozanich, and Dean Zupancic, Maestro
Chris Munro, James H. Mather, Chris Burdon, and Mark Taylor, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One
Willie Burton, Richard King, Gary A. Rizzo, and Kevin O'Connell, Oppenheimer
Steven Ghouti, Fabiola Ordoyo, and Laia Picón, Robot Dreams
Best Visual Effects
Jay Cooper, Ian Comley, Andrew Roberts, and Neil Corbould, The Creator
Sanjay Bakshi, Stephen Marshall, Jon Reisch, Junyi Ling, Elemental
Takashi Yamazaki, Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi, and Tatsuji Nojima, Godzilla Minus One
Alex Wuttke, Simone Coco, Jeff Sutherland, and Neil Corbould, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One
