Every autumn Dunedin Fine Art Center chooses a universal theme that runs through all of their galleries. This year they chose PLAY. It’s a wonderful choice and makes for a delightful time in the various galleries.  This is the last week to see two of the exhibitions- PLAY On!, a selection of wonderful artist made toys and toy related art (photos above), and LOL: Funny Papers, a juried selection of  art work incorporating comics, illustrations, zines and mixed media collage (photos below).

    Jessica walks into Veronica's office. 

"Hey." she greets as she sits down on a chair.

Veronica looks up from her computer. 

"Hey?" she says back to her. 

"What are you doing here?" she questions her backing her chair away from her computer. 

"Giles paid me a visit. He gave me the tape from the garage the night Lincoln killed Steadman. It's legit but I feel something isn't right." she says to her handing her the tape. 

"OK? And what do you need me to do?" she takes the tape from her. 

Jessica sighs before continuing.

 "I need you to go see Lincoln. I will be there just where he can't see me. I need you to find out if he's telling the truth about being innocent." she says to her.

Veronica looks at her in surprise. 

"Why don't you just ask him yourself?" she asks curiously. 

"Because I can't. I can't look at him without either wanting to punch him in the face or jump his bones through the bars." she says with a laugh. 

"I need you to do this for me V." she pleads with her. 

Veronica sighs before finally nodding. 

"OK. I'll do it." she says. "But you owe me dinner." she jokes. 

"Jerry's still your favorite?" she asks agreeing to her sister's terms. 

"Of course." Veronica says with a smile standing up grabbing her coat and following her sister out of the office.

        Jessica is standing on the other side of the visitor's room.

She is still able to have a perfect view of the cage that they are going to be bringing Lincoln in.

She takes a deep breath and watches as they bring Lincoln in.

Her breath catches and her heart started racing watching him being brought in.

Lincoln feels it the instant he is brought through.

 He gets that feeling in his stomach he always feels when Jess is nearby.

He starts to smile thinking that  Jess finally decided to visit him.

Jess watches as his smile fall from his face when he finally sees who is visiting him.

Lincoln could have sworn that it was Jess who was here, not Veronica the sister who is half responsible for ruining his marriage.

 "Expecting someone else?" Jess hears Veronica ask Lincoln. 

Jess smirks lightly to herself thankful that her sister isn't going to take it easy on him. When he doesn't say anything she continues.

 "I think it's time to cut the act don't you?" she says to him with a glare. 

"What are you talking about?" he asks confused. 

"You're starting to ruin people's lives." she insults. 

Jess almost feels bad with the look on his face.

"Michael is in here because he thinks you're innocent. Jess is following up on leads because someone left her a message saying you're innocent." Lincoln looks up at her in surprise.

"Jess is trying to prove I'm innocent?" he asks her with hopeful eyes.

 Jess watches as he asks Veronica that question and her heart breaks at the hope he had in his eyes. 

"She hasn't told me much about it. All she has is a tape which we both watched." she tells him.

"That's not what happened." he denies. 

"I saw the tape. I know what I saw." she argues back. 

"I know what I saw. I was there remember." He tells her.

 "I got high that night, I had to. It was the only way I could go through with it. I never pulled the trigger. He was already dead." he tells her. 

Jess watches on as he talks to Veronica.

She could tell that he thinks he is telling the truth, that he thinks he is innocent. 

"Yeah, I know you told them that already." she says sarcastically.

 "Then listen already!" he shouts at her.

 "I was set up! I was there that night to clear a debt. Crabb Sims was up my ass with the ninety grand I owed him. He said the guy was some scum bag drug dealer and if I took him out I'd be clean." He looks her right in the eye. 

"I didn't pull the trigger. Someone wanted me in that same garage that night as Terrance Steadman." Veronica is getting fed up.

 "Why would somebody want to set you up?" she asks sarcastically not believing him.

 Lincoln stands up getting frustrated.

 "It wasn't about me it was about him." Veronica looks confused.

 "Why would it be about Steadman? The guy was a saint. He did charity work. The only person in the world who had a motive to kill him was you." Veronica says to him. 

Lincoln looks at her trying to get her to at least start listening to what he is saying. 

"Why did you come here Veronica?" he asks her. 

"Jessica wanted me to find out if you really are innocent or not." she says telling him the truth.

 "Why didn't Jess come herself?" he asks defeated. 

"She doesn't believe you Lincoln. She thinks what everyone else thinks." she says to him exaggerating just a bit.

 "I know that Jessica has her life now. But tell her that if we had was real for her, she will find out the truth." he whispers to her in a defeated voice before getting up and leaving. 

Jessica watches him leave and walks into the room with Veronica. 

"So?" she asks Jess who watches Lincoln being led away in handcuffs. 

She sighs before walking off.

Tim Giles is walking out of the courthouse.

Two men approach him. 

"Mr. Giles could we have a moment of your time?" the one asks pulling out a badge. 

They move over to the side. 

"It has come to our attention that you have made a foil request on the Burrow's case." Paul Kellerman says getting to the point. 

 "Yeah. So?" Tim says confused about why he is being asked about this case again. 

"You seem to have made a duplicate of the surveillance tape. Do you mind telling us why?" Paul asks him. 

"It was Burrow's ex-wife. She came to me saying that he was innocent. So I gave her the tape for closure." He tells them. 

The other FBI officer cuts in.

 "And she is in possession of this tape now?" he asks Tim. 

"Don't pull that card with me. It's the freedom of information act. She's the ex-wife plus a police detective. She's entitled to that tape just as much as you or I." Tim says raising his voice.

 "Now can I go now?" he asks having enough. 

"Just one more thing. This ex-wife of his what's her name?" Paul Kellerman asks. 

Tim just looks at them before sighing. 

"Jessica Donovan."

1. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell — I first read this during my first semester of college and it immediately became my safety blanket book. The ultimate introvert read.

2. Someday, Someday, Maybe by Lauren Graham — This book means so much to me and was my guiding light during young adulthood. The only novel I’ve ever read more than twice. I wrote about my experience with it for Book Riot in 2021.

3. The People We Keep by Allison Larkin — A remarkably beautiful story of found family and learning to feel at home in your own skin. An all-time favorite.

4. The Hours by Michael Cunningham — I only read this for the first time last year when I adopted a homeless, discarded first edition hardcover from my library. I studied Virginia Woolf a lot during my literature degrees and this book is simply a masterpiece. *chef’s kiss*

5. When You Call My Name by Tucker Shaw — I’ve read a lot of gay historical YA set during the AIDS crisis, but none have made me cry quite so much as this one.

6. I Miss You When I Blink by Mary Laura Philpott — An essay collection about coming to terms with the ugly imperfections of adult life and learning to be okay with not having all the answers.

7. Nobody Cares by Anne T. Donahue — Another essay collection about failure and growing up, and how nobody actually cares as much as we think they do.

8. Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia — A comfy cozy YA novel about fandom culture, mental health, and the highs and lows of being an artist.

9. Bad Kid by David Crabb — A memoir about growing up gay and goth in the ‘80s, with such a memorable and vivid cast of characters that feel like your best friends by the end. One of my all-time favorite queer books.

10. Last Night in Montreal by Emily St. John Mandel — The perfect quick, strange little story that gets under your skin and you finish in one sitting. If you’re looking to “reject BookTok culture and go to the library and get a weird little novel you’ve never heard of in your life and read it all in two days like God intended,” look no further.

Once he arrives, he is taken for a bit of a ride by the canny locals as they try to milk him for as much cash as they can. In the days before cell phones; he has to call his boss from the phone box reporting his lack of progress and some astronomical sightings until eventually Happer comes over himself and immediately strikes up a rapport with Fulton Mackay who lives on the beach (and who is steadfastly refusing to sell). It is is simple story very well told with a slightly unpredictable, happy ending and a brilliant score from Mark Knopfler. Filipe Manuel Neto: **Slow, with boring characters and dialogues and a disjointed script, this film does not justify the “hype” around it.** This is one of those indie films that has won over a legion of self-confessed admirers. It’s a film that everyone speaks highly of, as if it were a solid masterpiece. I didn’t know that when I saw it for the first time, so I saw it without a lot of expectations. I’m glad I did it: despite recognizing some merits, I am convinced that the film has been well overrated. The proof is the way it fell into oblivion! If we exclude fans and movie nerds who know everything (and when they don’t, they make it up) who really remembers this movie? The film revolves around a story that is very simple: in the north of Scotland, there is a small bay with a beach and a sleepy village. When a rich oil entrepreneur decides to buy all that to build a huge refinery and a terminal for oil tankers, all those people are expectant, wanting to sell what they have for the best price. Only two people disagree: a marine biologist who want to preserve and study the local, and an old simpleton who owns a good part of that beach. The film had some potential, but it lacks solidity and a good script. Time is spent in sterile dialogue, rambling about comets, constellations and flirting. It is also very unbelievable, as a project like this would never be so consensual, there are always those who oppose it for financial or ecological reasons, or mere nostalgia.
