Simp for Metis at this stage
I think a bit too much about Hesiod's Theogony.
According to this, Zeus had 7 wives: Metis, Themis, Eurynome, Demeter, Mnemosyne, Leto and Hera
Metis is the only wife Zeus was forced to get rid of because she was supposed to give birth to a son who would defeat him. Plus "Zeus placed her down into his belly, so the goddess might advise him on good and evil." kind of changes it a bit, like she was some kind of voice in his head? Interesting.
Themis was basically… a good replacement for Metis. She advised him in the same way and was justice. Then we have Eurynome, who is like Metis but in appearance, a beautiful nymph.
Demeter, who opposed him but was powerful. Recognizing her as a wife is interesting, but it kind of shows us the great sense from Hestia taking a vow of virginity was. Then Mnemosyne was the personification of memories… do I need to add anything when he still couldn't get his first wife out of his head?
The case of Leto and Hera is very interesting because we all know that one was supposed to pursue the other. Hera was jealous of her husband, so it means that Leto got pregnant after the divorce or was replaced when her pregnancy was not yet known.
And now I see one thing (unless I missed something) but if we assume that Leto was actually divorced, maybe because she couldn't / not wanted to get pregnant, which turned out to be only when Hera was already ruling… it turns out that Hera is the only one who gave Zeus a son from a legitimate bed. Each of the other ladies here gave birth to only daughters, and Apollo was born out of wedlock because Hera was jealous of her husband then. Does this mean that Zeus wanted a son and he was only bargaining chip to continue the marriage?
This is already an obsession, but everything revolves around Metis for me. Zeus tried to replace her mind, her looks, her strength and finally that she would give him a son but this time a safe one. Right after that Athena is born so Zeus no longer has a part of Metis to follow in love life, he has it in his daughter.

A bunch of doodles of Hera’s youth bc I really enjoy the variant where Hera wasn’t eaten by Kronos and was raised by Oceanus and Tethys. It just has so much potential y’know?

Dear Hades Fans,
Walk with me For Just a small moment. Hera x Metis is the Hades Universe…how are we feeling about it. Maybe they are a mirror to Nyx x Persephone…maybe they were lovers to enemies…and maybe, just maybe, Hera never knew where Metis really went.

The first birth of Athena
Before Athena emerged from Zeus, she was born to her mother, inside of an environment made for anything but life
CW: Stillbirth (temporary)
▣■▣■▣■▣■▣■▣■▣■▣■▣■▣■▣■▣
Metis swallowed hard, cradling her newborn daughter to her chest, wings protectively wrapping around them both.
It should have been the happiest moment of her life. But all she felt was cold dread.
The infant was small, way smaller than she should be, and pale as ivory. She lay perfectly still in her mother's arms, and she wasn't breathing.
"Athena," Metis whispered. Her lips gently brushed against her daughter's clammy skin. "Mama's here, Athena, please, just breathe. Please-" Her voice cracked.
The weight of Zeus' essence, always working against them ever since he had consumed them, pressed down more oppressively than it had ever done, like the new life was an insult to his divinity.
"Athena," Metis repeated, gently rocking the baby in her arms. "Breathe, my dearest, breathe for me."
She carefully pressed her hand to her daughter's chest, hoping to spark a reaction, make her cough, or anything...
She hadn't endured all this to watch her daughter fade to nothing.
Athena's wings rested limply against Metis' hand, a few downy feathers brushing against her skin.
Metis felt panicked tears slip down her face as she ran her thumb over her daughter's chest is circular motions, humming the broken tune of a lullaby.
Nothing.
Metis lifted her head to look into the unforgiving void, swirling with Zeus' energy that didn't want them there.
"You have to stop this," she whispered. "Zeus, please, let me keep her, I beg you."
She had no idea if he could hear her. At any rate, the void around her stayed still, uncaring that her baby wasn't moving.
Metis swallowed hard, cradling Athena closer to her chest, patting her back below her wings.
Her mind was racing almost too fast to keep up.
Zeus' energy almost knocked her to the floor, and Athena's small body seemed to go even colder.
Tears slipped down Metis' cheeks uninhibitedly.
"I won't lose you," she whispered. "I will not lose you, Athena."
She gently opened the baby's mouth, then briefly closed her eyes to materialize her own divine energy. If Zeus was working against his daughter, she would work for her.
A sliver of silver energy traveled out of Metis' mouth as she exhaled, into Athena's small body.
A low rumble like from thunder ran through the void. Metis flinched, wings shielding Athena more closely. The baby still didn't move.
"Come on," Metis whispered. "Come on, you're a fighter, my little one." She breathed out more energy. I need to see her... Oh fates, please, I need to see my baby open her eyes...
She felt her own essence flickering, complaining about being broken up and shared this way. She didn't care. If she had to shatter herself completely to make Athena live, she would.
Another breath, another sliver of silver into her baby's mouth. Zeus' essence pressed against her wings, an oppressive weight.
Metis took a shaky breath, pressing a kiss to Athena's forehead.
"You're so strong," she whispered brokenly. "You're so brave, my little girl."
A shudder ran through the small body in her arms. Metis exhaled in a soft sob.
Athena squirmed, her little face scrunching up. A weak sound escaped her mouth, more of a whimper than a cry, but her chest rose and fell shakily.
Metis laughed tearfully, cradling her daughter close.
"There you are," she whispered. "There you are, my little warrior. It's alright, Mama's right here."
Athena whimpered again, more strongly this time. Her tiny wings stiffened and shook behind her.
Metis kissed her again, caressing her daughter's small face.
"Athena," she murmured, wanting the girl to hear her name. The baby cooed softly, almost a chirping noise, then her eyes flickered open.
Metis caught her breath, meeting her baby's gaze for the first time.
Dark, almost black, with yellow flecks. Zeus' eyes. Almost. Metis frowned, looking more closely. A faint rim of silver around the iris, the same color as the energy that had brought her to life in this inhospitable environment.
Athena cooed again, yawning.
"You're perfect," Metis whispered tenderly, fingers gently brushing over Athena's skin. "You're beautiful, and you're mine, my little girl. I'll do anything for you, little Nea, I swear to you, anything."
Athena moved a little, tiny hand closing around the fabric of Metis' chiton. Her small body shuddered, then she started crying.
"There," Metis whispered, rocking the little goddess in her arms. "Shhh, it's okay. I know it's not nice here. Shhh." She wrapped the baby into her himation, holding her close.
She knew it wasn't over, not close. Zeus' essence was only barely kept at bay. But she was holding her baby and comforting her, and for that moment, she was the happiest she has ever been.

Today was my first day ever drawing Metis and Reah and I’m not super Duper pleased with the results, but this is how it always feels when I do something for the first time. I’m excited to work on these two sketches. I know they’re gonna look amazing once I’ve gone through a few drafts of them.

Y'ALL DELIVERED, SO NOW I'M DELIVERING BACK
It's a MAP idea using the "Intervention Song" from Eight Crazy Nights :3. It's long as fuck though, since I'm literally just throwing in exactly what I put from my Google docs, so it'll be under the cut!
Setting: Olympus
Intro:
“Time to cry, [Davey,] over.”
“What? Get out of here, I'm leaving…”
“You can run from [Whitey,] but you ain't gonna run from us!”
The scene starts with Hephaestus saying the opening line. Athena turns to leave, but gets blocked by Ares before she can, being shoved back into the room.
Part one:
“We all heard what happened at the skating rink today. When [Whitey] brought up your sad past, you snapped and walked away!”
Hermes starts with the first verse, talking about the fight between Athena and Odysseus in ‘My Goodbye’. The scene fades to that fight, Odysseus mouthing the words “You're Alone!”. Athena is shown to yell something back before turning away from him and leaving as Hermes says “you snapped and walked away”
Part two:
“Well maybe they're onto something that you should give a try! Go ahead and let it out, and have yourself a cry!”
It cuts back to Athena's annoyed face, as Hermes floats around her, making a crying motion while grinning at her.
Part three:
“Let it out, [Davey!]”
“Aw, shut your wooden mugs!”
“Let it out, [Davey…]”
“Would you check out her bazugs!”
Aeolus moves their cloud in front of Athena, giving her an encouraging smile as a few winions and them tell her to “let it out.” Athena angrily swipes the cloud away from her, stomping away. Aphrodite pulls her back, giving her a hug from behind, and Athena pushes her away too. Ares makes a comment while looking lovingly at Aphrodite, and Artemis glares at him with disgust.
Part four:
“You want me to deal with pain? Well cheers is what I say.”
“This here stuff just numbs the pain, it don't make it go away!”
Athena waved her hand dismissively as she says her line, reaching out to grab a bottle of wine. Ares is quick to grab it before her, shaking the bottle angrily at her while saying his line. Athena rolls her eyes at him.
Part five:
“You try to act so tough.”
“But you just live a lie!”
“Why don't you show your feminine side, and have yourself a cry?”
Hera comes in from the right side of the screen, her arms are crossed as she looks at Athena with frustration. Hermes comes in from the left side, his arms are also crossed as he looks at Athena with the same expression as Hera (almost like he's mimicking her to further emphasize everyone's point). Aphrodite enters from the center, looking upset and crying as she yells at Athena to “show your feminine side”. It cuts to Aphrodite getting in Athena's face, who looks just as upset. Aphrodite's powers cause tears to spark in her eyes, but nothing falls, and Aphrodite angrily flips her hair at Athena's face, walking away from the offended goddess.
Part six:
“Let it out, [Davey!]”
“I'll pour you down the sink!”
“You gotta do it, [Davey!]”
“Y'all can bite my dink!”
Apollo tries to reason with Athena, reaching out to try and hold her hand. Athena jerks away from him, standing over him as she threateningly says her line. Artemis is able to grab her arm, scolding her stupidity and stubbornness. Athena pulls her arm free, walking away from the twins. The small music break cuts to each god looking upset, angry, or pity for Athena.
Part seven:
“You labels and logos are wasting your time, making me sit here. Cause nothing you can say or do, will make me shed a tear!”
Athena turns to the group of gods with hatred, folding her arms across her chest and holding her head up high, determined not to cry.
Part eight:
“[He] possesses a strong spirit!
“And won't let down [his] guard…”
Aeolus makes a comment about Athena's “strong spirit”, looking a little impressed, but concerned. Artemis follows with “and won't let down his guard”, both gods looking at Athena with worry.
Part nine:
“So now we'll bring in the big gun: [His beautiful Chanukah card!]”
“Take it [Davey,] might have money in it, over.”
Hermes starts making a large illusion in front of everyone, starting it in front of Athena. The illusion isn't fully formed yet, and Hephaestus makes a comment. The rest of the gods are confused as well, not having planned this as the illusion takes form.
Part ten:
“Happy Chanukah to our wonderful [son.]”
“You fill our lives with joy!”
“Don't ever change the way you are. You beautiful, [twelve-year-old boy…]”
The illusion is of a younger looking Zeus, and a woman with her face scribbled out. It's clear that the woman is of Athena's mother, Metis, as both illusions speak softly to Athena. Athena, looking hurt, stands in front of the illusion of her mother. Metis reaches out, her hand hovering just above Athena's cheek. Zeus stays back, still talking along with Metis, his voice louder than hers. The other gods are watching from afar, looking horrified at the sight.
Closing:
Athena falls to her knees, trying to hug Metis, but the illusion fades away. Athena hugs herself tightly, tears freely flowing down her face as she looks dejected at the ground, shoulders shaking as she silently cries. Hermes puts a hand on her shoulder, attempting to comfort her as the other gods look at each other with sad looks on their faces.

✦ A L T A L U N A & C U C U F A T E ✦ Research
"When Oppian describes the cunning of the fishing frog squatting in the mud, motionless and invisible, he compares it to the fox: ‘The scheming fox (agkulómetis kerdō) devises a similar trick; as soon as it spots a flock of wild birds it lies down on its side, stretches out its agile limbs, closes its eyelids and shuts its mouth. To see it you would think that it was enjoying a deep sleep or even that it was really dead, so well does it hold its breath as it lies stretched out there, all the while turning over treacherous plots (aióla bouleúousa) in its mind. No sooner do the birds notice it than they swoop down on it in a flock and, as if in mockery, tear at its coat with their claws, but as soon as they are within reach of its teeth the fox reveals its cunning (dólos) and seizes them unexpectedly. The fox is a trap; when the right moment comes the dead creature becomes more alive than the living. [….] If the metis of the fox is immediately detectable in its skill at playing dead, it is dazzlingly apparent in this sudden reversal. In effect, the fox holds the secret of reversal which is the last word in craftiness." - Cunning Intelligence in Greek Culture and Society by Marcel Detienne and Jean-Pierre Vernant, pp. 35-36

My design of Metis and young Zeus have pendants with a shell. They were their pendants that they made for each other, promising never to take them off, years before their plan to get his siblings back even started. They were just children and had no problems, yet.
And then years passed and Zeus swallowed his love along with the symbolic pendant. But he wore his. For years he did not take it off, until he didn't take another wife. Hera this time. Hera who was friends with Metis and knew the true symbolism of this small shell.
Zeus took it off for their wedding and then never put it on again. Until one day, when he found it. In his treasures among the gold and gifts there was a broken strap with a crushed shell.
Zeus realized that instead of the mighty Olympus they planned, there is a false land full of chaos, instead of the unification of all species, there is a constant fight for a place in the survival hierarchy, instead of great happiness in their big dream family, there is... well, there are children he had from many betrayals. Betrayals that he would never commit against Metis but which are Hera's everyday life. A family that does not love him. They are afraid of him. And the only daughter, desired for years, whom Zeus loves. But she will never look at him the same way again, and her scars will remind him of that. And then his son who never had the chance to be born but to whom he would give everything he has now so that mother of this boy would be there and just tell her stupid husband how to fix everything.
He was the one who ruined it.
That is why he broke the strap years ago. Now he would put on his pendant without a moment's hesitation if not for this strap but Zeus didn't want to let Metis down more than he did. Not again.

I imagine Hera feels bad about replacing Metis, not bc she’s the goddess of marriage (bc if she had replaced Leto or someone else she doesn’t like she won’t give a fuck) but bc they grew up together under Oceanus and Tethys, they never got along as kids, always butting heads and fighting bc of their conflicting personalities but bc they grew up as sisters they cared for each other. They didn’t talk much as young adults, (plenty of siblings that they have more in common with to hang out with) but then the Titanomachy kicked off and they had to work together and interact with each other, that’s when they started to bond and become friends.
#idk how this would tie to my au where Metis escapes Zeus#but I’ll figure it out#hc#headcanons#headcanon#fanon#greek mythology#ancient greek mythology#greek pantheon#hera#greek goddess#hera goddess#hera deity#hera greek mythology#zeus#hera x zeus#goddess hera#Metis#metis goddess#titanomachy

Metís, Titon of the mind
Athenaaaa! I drew your Mom!
So my idea with Metis is that she's much less regal in character than Hera, she's kinda the cool alt wife Zeus had in his youth. Still has a kick-ass sense of fashion though like ahhh look at this. (Also am I going overboard with the earpiercings for my designs? The answer is shut up I like them and I'm coping bc my own earpiercings won't heal and I just wanna wear all the cool earrings I have okay)
I tried not to make her too close in looks to Athena, bc in my mind, the gods don't really work that way, they are more Rodgers and Hammerstein Cinderella lvl of gene logic lmao Otherwise my Ares design wouldn't work and I am attached to it. I feel like it's more that likeness means something, like Artemis and Apollo having matching hair strands, or in this case, Metis' grey eyes that Athena also has. Otherwise, ofc a lot of ocean-inspired imagery bc of her being an oceanid, also a different hue than Athena but kinda the same hue as Quick Thought. For my more animal inspired designs (i.e winged!Athena) she'd get wings too, inspired by a blue jay which is also a very intelligent bird like an owl or raven.
