Sesshomaru Mer-made a Mistake
Summary: All Kagome wanted to do was show Rin what a real-life mermaid would look like. She didn't anticipate the ire of a protective demon lord.
Snippet
In the stream, Kagome propped herself on a rock leaving most of her body visible. However, it was her body that she was deeply mesmerized by. Tightly hugging her chest were vibrant pink scales trailing down to her hips. Where Kagome’s legs should have been was a flowing tail. It flowed in the crystalline water like stranded silks and was the color of a deep, pink sunset. It glittered shades of oranges and whites so spectacular in the sunlight that Rin could not formulate words.

A full moon shone in the sky as I pulled myself up out of the water to lay on the boulder half sticking out of the ocean. The elders forbade us from coming this close to the shore because there was too much of a risk that a human might see us. I didn’t care. They already shunned me for the most part because of my heritage.
Turning onto my back I stared up at the night sky my black tail still partially submerged in the water. There were times I envied the humans that they got to see such a wondrous sight at night. I had heard that the humans had even named some of the star patterns and called them constellations. But the moon and stars weren’t the only thing I had come up to see.
It wasn’t long before I heard the footsteps. I immediately slipped back into the water and hid as I watched the human take his usual seat on one of the nearby boulders at the edge of the water. For the last couple weeks he had been coming here late at night to sit. And for the last couple weeks I had taken to watching him.
At first I was tempted to drown him. It had been a while since I tasted human flesh. And the gun holstered to his thigh told me he was from the military base the local fisherman talked about. He would have made for a fun target. But as I got closer I couldn’t help but find him to be attractive, for a human anyway.
He was older with gray hair and a beard that was just as dark grey. His skin was paler than many of the fisherman who lived in the area, but not as pale as mine. He was on the taller side and had a decent figure. Well as far as I thought compared to other humans.
Keeping my eyes just above the water I watched him from where I was hiding behind a large rock. A part of me wondered what was on his mind that had him sit by the ocean instead of sleeping like the rest of his species. Tonight he was not just lost in thought. His fingers were idly playing with something metal.
Curiosity getting the better of me I slowly and as quietly as I could swam closer to try and make out what it was. I tilted my head to the side as I looked at the curious object. The bottom was a thick square shaped brass colored piece of metal. On top was a silver u shaped piece of metal attached. I hadn’t seen anything like it before. Maybe Elizabeth or Valerie knew what it was.
The man sighed heavily his gaze falling down towards the waves lapping at the rocks below him. I quickly moved back behind the rock. As I did I had made a splash and the man’s gaze turned toward me. He stood and moved closer to the edge of the rock, kneeling down for a better look. For a brief moment I thought he might have seen me but I wasn’t sure.
As I watched him from where I hid I saw the metal object slip from his hand. As it hit the water the man said, “Shit!” It was the first time I had heard his voice. I surprised myself when I found it pleasant to listen to. As he leaned closer to the water I had a sudden idea.
Diving under I swam closer until I was in the water under him. His brows furrowed as he stared down into the water where I was. I swam a little closer and he blinked as if in disbelief. Unable to help myself I began to hum softly. He leaned even closer to the water. Swimming closer still, I broke through the waters surface and reached a hand up to him.
I continued humming to keep him in a trance as I reached my hand up and gently touched his cheek. My fingers combed through his beard gently. It was softer than I was expecting. Being this close I could see his eyes were green and above his left eyebrow was a scar on his forehead. I traced it delicately wondering what had caused it.
As I did I he had reached a hand down and just as delicately traced the scars on my cheek. A part of me wanted to flinch and break away but I didn’t. The last time I had gotten this close to a human was how I got those scars. But his touch was gentle and soft. I didn’t feel threatened.
“Lilith?” My concentration broke at the sound of my name being called. “Lilith? What are you doing?” The man blinked suddenly as my trance broke. I quickly swam down out of view. As I did I saw the object he had dropped. I stopped and picked it up as Valerie swam over. “Are you alright?” she asked when she reached me.
“Yes I’m fine,” I replied as my gaze looked up. The man was gone. I sighed as an unexpected twinge of sadness hit me. Disgusted with the feeling I turned my attention to the object in my hand. Glancing up at Valerie I asked, “What did you want?”
“Just some advice is all.” She curiously looked at the item in my hand. “Oooh is that a lock?” I gave her a curious look.
“What’s a lock?” I asked as my attention turned back to the item in my hand.
“Humans use them to keep things from being opened. Where did you find it?”
“He dropped it.” I looked back up at the surface. When I looked back at Valerie she was looking at me curiously. “What?”
“You were watching him?”
“He fascinates me is all.”
“You know humans are dangerous.”
“I know.” Reaching my hands to the back of my neck I untied the black ribbon I wore and slipped the lock onto it before retying it around my neck. Valerie watched me with a raised eyebrow. “I think it’s pretty,” I said quietly. What I didn’t say was that I liked it because it was his.
“Right.” Valerie shook her head with a smile.
“So what was it you needed advice on?” I asked as we began swimming away from the shore.
 -
It had been a few days since I briefly let the human see me. It was an accident really. Valerie had interrupted my concentration and my trance on him broke while I was still out of the water. It wasn’t her fault though. I was out of the water touching a human who in turn was touching me. So I really couldn’t blame her for being worried. It was a similar incident that had left me with a scarred face.
Ironically she had come to see me asking advice on her own interaction with a human. It would seem that she too had a fascination with a human. Apparently she had tried drowning a Frenchman but couldn’t go through with it. She was worried she had developed feelings for the human. I suggested she just watch him from a distance or maybe avoid the area she saw him in. Maybe keeping her distance would help her get over her feelings.
Crossing her arms she called me a hypocrite because she knew I wouldn’t do the same with my human. I had sighed and told her to ignore my advice then. She had seen how close I had been to the human and the way I was affectionately touching him. If I thought that she should keep her distance from the Frenchman then maybe I should keep my distance from the man I let see me.
So I did. I even avoided Valerie and Elizabeth. A part of me worried that Valerie would tell someone what she saw me do and I didn’t need anymore judgment from others. As I relaxed in my cave I couldn’t stop thinking about him. My fingers played idly with the lock on the ribbon I wore close around my neck. I stared at some of the human trinkets and items I had decorated my cave with. My gaze settled on the dark purple knitted crossbody bag I had once found dropped by a human.
It had a few interesting human items in it but I had found it to be useful for collecting shells and human treasures and bringing them back. Deciding I needed a distraction I grabbed the bag and slung it over me. I swam through the short tunnel that led to my cave. The entrance of my cave was covered by hanging seaweed that helped keep it hidden. Before leaving I made sure the plants went back into place.
As I swam around I eventually came across an old human ship. I could hear noises coming from inside. Swimming close to one of the openings I called out, “Elizabeth? Is that you?” Her head popped out not long after.
“Oh, hey Lilith.” She swam up and sat on the ledge. “You okay? Valerie and I have been wondering where you were.” I shrugged.
“I just wanted to be alone.”
“And it has nothing to do with your human does it?”
“Of course Valerie told you,” I muttered.
“She was worried is all. I don’t bother with humans for a reason. After what happened to you I’m surprised you would still take risks like that.”
“I had him under a trance until Valerie came along and broke my concentration.”
“Then why was he touching you?” I looked over at her. If he had been fully under a trance he wouldn’t have moved at all.
“I don’t know,” I shrugged.
“Well just be safe Lilith. Next time you might not be so lucky.” With a sigh I swam off leaving Elizabeth to continue her exploration of the ship.
 -
As I swam along I didn’t find much. Swimming up to the surface I saw that it was beginning to get dark. Going back under I decided to head for the shore. I’d have better luck finding something interesting. At least that’s what I told myself.
When I got close I saw him. He was already sitting in the same spot he always did. I quietly swam closer before leaning against a rock to watch him. His gaze constantly moved to the waters surface. It was obvious our encounter had stuck with him.
After some time the man sighed and stood. I watched as he turned and began to walk away. Swimming over to the boulder he was just sitting on, I dug into my bag and took out one of the shells I had collected. I placed it on the boulder before making a loud splash as I went back under. Once I was back in my hiding spot I watched as the man turned and walked back.
He slowly knelt down and picked up the shell a dumbfounded look on his face. As he stood back up he looked around to see if there was anyone else nearby but saw no one. A small smile crossed his lips as he looked the shell over. He looked down towards the water’s surface, and towards the rock I was hiding behind. I smiled as I watched him put the shell in his jacket pocket before walking away.
 -
The next night I returned again. My human was in his usual spot. And like the night before I silently watched him until he stood to leave. Tonight however he knelt down and placed something down on the boulder before he began walking away. I immediately swam over and picked up the item while leaving a shell in its place. Making sure to make a loud splash, I swam back to my rock.
I watched the man as like the night before he walked back over and picked up the shell. He smiled as he stood up and looked down at the water. I couldn’t help but smile to myself as I watched him again pocket the shell before turning to leave. My gaze then turned to the object he had left for me. It was a large glass marble with an iridescence of sorts swirled inside it. With a smile I looked back up where the human had been before retreating into the sea.
The night after that it happened again. Before he’d leave he would place something on the rock which I would then replace with a shell. This time he left a rounded and smooth purple stone. And the night after that it happened again and again after that.
Back in my cave I had made the shelf on the side of the wall next to the rock I slept on just for the trinkets he’d leave me. As I placed the latest trinket, a small glass turtle onto the shelf I smiled. I knew the others would disapprove of my interactions with him but I didn’t care. Seeing him and exchanging gifts the way we did brought me a kind of happiness I hadn’t felt in a long time.
-
I hummed softly to myself as I swam along the ocean floor looking for shells. So far I had found a couple nice ones but I wanted to find one that was extra nice to leave for my human. None of the others had discovered what I had been doing. However I was sure Valerie and Elizabeth probably suspected something was up. I was certain they both knew I had not left my human alone.
They were only worried for my safety because of what happened to me before. If not for their help when it happened I would have been killed or worse because of a human. But this man was different. He didn’t come across as threatening and his touch had been gentle.
For a moment I had been lost in thought, thinking about that night when he had touched my cheek. He had traced my scars delicately despite being under my trance. That still puzzled me. He shouldn’t have been able to move of his own free will but he did. It had me tempted to try putting him in a trance again.
My thoughts were soon interrupted by the smell of blood in the water. It was human. Realizing I wasn’t too far from the shore where I would watch my human I began to worry. I quickly swam for the shore. The closer I got the stronger the smell of blood became.
When I reached the area I would watch my human from I looked around. It didn’t take long to see him. As I swam over to him I could see blood in the water near his head. I wrapped my arms around his waist and swam quickly to the surface. It was still light out but overcast. Luckily there were no other humans around to see as I swam over to the small beach nearby. Using all my strength I pulled him out of the water and onto the beach.
I stared down at him with worry. He wasn’t breathing. Leaning my head down against his chest I listened for a heartbeat. It was faint. If I didn’t get the water out of his lungs soon he would die. The problem was I was better at drowning humans than saving them. Unsure of what to do I pressed down on his chest and abdomen. To my surprise it worked.
The man coughed up water, his head turning slightly to the side. I sighed with relief as he did before realizing he was awake and would see me. Before I could turn and slide back into the sea his gaze was on me. He stared at me silently a moment before his eyes closed again. I then remembered the blood.
Reaching my hand to the back of his head I felt the wound. When I brought my hand back it was covered in blood, the smell of it making my mouth water As I slid into the waves and back into the sea I figured he must have slipped and hit his head on the rocks before falling in. I swam down and began picking some of the seaweed before also picking some sea moss. While I knew they helped with our wounds, I had no idea if they would help a human’s wounds.
Despite this I swam back up and back toward the beach where he was still lying unconscious, the waves crashing over his legs. As I pulled myself up onto the sand next to him I checked to make sure he was still breathing. When I was sure he was still alive I moved his head and placed the moss and seaweed combo against the bleeding wound. Then there was nothing to do but wait.
I moved a few stray clumps of his dark grey hair out of his face. He really was attractive even if he was a human. My hand rested softly on his cheek as I continued to admire him. If Elizabeth or Valerie saw me now they would freak out. They’d probably even come up and drag me back down into the sea.
Suddenly I remembered the blood. If I had been able to smell it then others would have as well. With I sigh I turned to head back into the sea. Not everyone would be as understanding as Valerie and Elizabeth. I turned back and after digging a shell out of my bag and carefully put it in his jacket pocket.
Once back in the water I looked around to see if I could see anyone but I didn’t. At least not yet. Swimming to the surface I glanced back at the beach I left my human on. He was still there, still unconscious. I sighed hoping he would be okay before diving back under.
-
It had been a few days since my human almost drowned. Every night I went to the shore but he still hadn’t shown up again. A part of me was worried one of my kind had found him on the beach and killed him. Another part hoped he had been found by his own and was still healing.
I had been keeping myself distracted by looking for shells but the worry still ate away at me. There was no one I could talk to about it. Elizabeth would probably say good riddance. Valerie would say it was for the best. And I would just feel worse.
Truth was that I shouldn’t have felt anything for him. He was a human. Human’s were not be trusted. They were a cruel species who would kill or capture us if they could. But my human was different. I was certain.
As the light of day began to fade I swam towards the shore hoping I’d see him again. I had to know if he was okay or not. When I neared the shore something shiny in the sand caught my eye. Swimming closer I picked it up. It was a glass bead.
As I looked at it there was a plop in the water above me. Looking up I watched as another slowly sank to the bottom. I picked that one up as well and put them both in my bag. Then another bead was dropped in. After picking that one up and putting it in my bag I swam towards the rock I used to hide behind.
Cautiously I swam to the surface and looked out and saw him. My human was sitting in his usual spot holding something in his hand. With a smile I watched as he lifted a bead like the other’s I had found and tossed it into the water. Unable to help myself I dived down with a splash and collected it. When I surfaced back behind my rock I watched as he tossed another, this time in my direction. I dived under again and again didn’t care if I made a splash. Picking up that bead I quickly swam back up behind my rock.
My human had moved down the rock near the water. He tossed another bead in the water but not as far as the others. I knew there was a chance he might see me again but at the moment I didn’t care. Diving under again I swam over and picked it up. Before I could swim back to my rock he had tossed another into the water. This one was closer to the rock he was sitting on. Swimming to pick it up, I watched as another was dropped in and quickly moved to pick that one up as well.
Another was dropped right in front of the rock. I watched as it sank down landing softly on the sand. For a moment I hesitated. Slowly I swam over and picked it up just as another was dropped in. As that one sank down I grabbed it and put it in my bag. I waited for a moment but he didn’t drop anymore in the water. Reaching into my bag I grabbed the shell I had been waiting to give him and swam up.
Cautiously I reached my hand above the water and placed the shell down on the rock. As I did I felt his fingers softly touch mine but he did not grab me as would have been expected of a human. I was freely able to pull my arm back down under the water. After I did I watched as he submerged his own hand carefully. Looking closer I saw one last bead. I picked it up out of his hand and put it in my bag with the others.
As he began to pull his hand back out of the water I reached up and gently grabbed it. For a moment we remained still, holding each others hands. After a while he gently pulled his hand back. Instead of letting go I let him pull me up. As my head broke the waters surface my human smiled.
“You’re real,” he said quietly. I couldn’t help but smile softly.
“Why wouldn’t I be?” He looked a bit taken aback.
“You speak English?”
“Is that what humans call it?” I asked curiously. He nodded slowly his gaze falling on the lock on the ribbon around my neck.
“I see you found my lock.” My hand grasped it briefly. “Keep it,” he said with a smile. “What are you?”
“I believe humans refer to us in your stories as mer folk.” I watched as his gaze drifted down towards the water. With a smile I pulled myself up onto the rock next to him, sitting with the lower half of my tail remaining in the water.
“Okay,” he muttered quietly as he sat back a look of disbelief on his face. He remained quiet for a time as he stared at me.
“How’s your head?”
“You’re the one who saved me.” I nodded. “It’s better. Thank you.” I smiled softly.
“Why do you come here every night?”
“You’ve been watching me.” I nodded again. “It’s easier to clear my head here. It’s peaceful.” He paused a moment before asking, “So why have you been watching me?”
“Curiosity,” I replied as I leaned back splashing my tail briefly. “My kind doesn’t trust humans. Your kind historically hasn’t been kind to mine.”
“I can believe that.” He reached a hand out and delicately traced the scar on my cheek. “Is that how you got this?” I nodded slowly. “I’m sorry.”
“You’re different.”
“Sam.”
“What?”
“My name is Sam.”
“Lilith.” He smiled at me as he slowly removed his hand from my face. I couldn’t but find his smile to be attractive. Unable to help myself I reached a hand out and touched his cheek and beard.
A sudden splash nearby caught our attention. Looking back at him I said, “I have to go.”
“Will I see you again?”
With a smile, I said, “Of course.” I then slipped back into the water and began swimming away. As I did I looked around to see who it was that might have seen me but didn’t see anyone.
Suddenly out of nowhere a hand grabbed my arm. “What the hell is wrong with you?” Valerie stared at me with a shocked expression. “Do you realize how much of a risk you took?”
“You’re one to talk with your Frenchman issue.”
“Yeah but I didn’t go above the surface and have a chat with him while letting him caress my face.” I sighed. “Lilith I worry about you.” She gently rested a hand on my scarred cheek. “You’re one of my best friends and I already almost lost you once.”
“I know.”
“Humans are dangerous. Even your human could be dangerous.” I said nothing knowing she wouldn’t believe me. “Please be more careful. Stay away from him.” I looked away from her refusing to agree with her. Pulling my arm out of her grasp I quickly swam away. “Lilith!” she called after me but I didn’t respond.
Back in my cave I took a shell and carefully placed the beads in it then put it onto the shelf with the other gifts from Sam. While I still viewed him as my human it was nice to know his name.
With a sigh I curled up on the rock I used as a bed. I refused to believe he was anything like the other humans. He couldn’t be. I closed my eyes and tried to ignore the creeping doubt from my conversation with Valerie.
-
Despite Valerie’s warnings I continued to see my human, Sam. At night I’d swim to the shore and Sam would be waiting. We’d ask one another questions or talk about our day. He’d always explain the things I didn’t understand. The days went on and more and more I enjoyed spending time with him.
I knew Valerie didn’t approve. Luckily she kept my secret and so far was the only one who knew what I was doing. I assured her I was being safe and that he wasn’t going to hurt me. He was different from the others. And so far he had proved me right.
Tonight I was laying on the rock with my tail hanging in the water listening as Sam read from a book. I felt a little bad that I had to stop him every few sentences for clarification or to explain something. He didn’t seem to mind though. In fact he almost seemed happy to.
Eventually he stopped and we remained lying next to each other silently staring at the night sky. “Why are you so curious about humans?” he asked quietly.
“I never believed they were all as bad and cruel as the elders say. And your world and species are so curious.” I slowly sat up and moved my hair behind my shoulders. As Sam sat up he briefly glanced at my chest before looking away. “Why are you humans so averse to nudity?” I asked.
“It’s not that, it’s...” He paused as if not sure how to explain. With a shrug he said, “I don’t really know. Cultural differences I suppose.” His gaze returned to me.
“So it’s not that you think I look like a monster?” He frowned.
“Why would you say that?” I looked down at my hands in my lap.
“Very few look like me.” I sighed. “Most look more human in skin tone and eyes. Much easier to pass as human,” I said referring to my grayish skin tone and eyes with black sclera. When I looked back up at him his expression had softened.
“You’re not a monster.”
“My father was,” I replied. Sam’s head tilted curiously. “He wasn’t a mer. He was… something else.”
“And your mother?”
“She was a mer.” I smiled softly as I remembered her. “Despite what everyone said my mother loved my father.”
“What happened to them?” I looked away from Sam.
“My father died when I was too young to remember. My mother…” My voice trailed off fingering the pendant given to me by my mother. “She was killed by humans not long after I came of age,” I whispered. Slowly looking up at Sam I could see a look of sympathy on his face.
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s not your fault. I know not all humans are as bad as the ones who murdered her.”
“Still… I know what it’s like to lose both parents at a young age.”
“I’m sure you weren’t ostracized by your own kind.” He shook his head.
“Because of your father?” I nodded.
“He’s the reason I don’t look like others of my kind. Most mer look almost human but me…” I sighed. “My skin is grey, my eyes are black, I have claws and gills, sharp teeth.” Whispering I said, “I’m a monster.”
“You’re not a monster,” Sam repeated reaching a hand up and traced my scars gently. “Far from it,” he said softly. A feeling I didn’t understand came over me. One I shouldn’t have for a human.
“Even if I told you I’ve eaten your kind before?” I asked as I looked away from him. His hand flattened against my cheek moving my face back to him, his thumb delicately tracing my lower lip.
“I’ve done my research.” My gaze rested on his own lips. “I’m guessing you were gonna drown and eat me?” My eyes looked up into his.
“Yes,” I replied with a fang bearing smile. He only softly smiled in response. “You’re not afraid of me.”
“Should I be?”
“I could pull you under and drown you right now if I wanted.”
“And do you?” he asked leaning close.
“Maybe,” I replied leaning close as well. He closed the gap between us, his lips softly pressing against mine. For a moment I forgot myself but I quickly came back to my senses and pulled back. He looked at me puzzled. “I’m sorry, I have to go.” I quickly slid back into the water and began swimming away.
My mind was so confused and I was panicking. I shouldn’t have felt anything for Sam. He was human and I was not. And I let him kiss me. This was not good. I didn’t know what to do.
-
The day after Sam kissed me, I went in search of Valerie and Elizabeth. As I swam along all I could think about was the kiss. I felt torn as I knew it was wrong but it didn’t feel wrong. I shouldn’t have had these kind of feelings for him. He was human and I was not.
I came across an old shipwreck and decided to check it out. “Elizabeth? You there?” I called out as I swam closer.
“Lilith?” Valerie swam up from the other side. Elizabeth’s head popped up from a hole in the deck not long after.
“Hey Lilith,” she said as she swam up to sit on the edge of the hole. “What’s up?”
“Did you finally decide to eat your human?” Valerie asked.
“No,” I replied giving her a frown.
“Oh hush Valerie,” Elizabeth said.
“He kissed me,” I blurted out. They both looked at me in shock.
“You let him do what?” Valerie asked sounding upset. “Was sitting on the rocks with him to have conversations not enough of a risk?” Elizabeth looked at Valerie then at me.
“You did what?” Elizabeth asked. “Lilith that’s taking a huge risk.”
“Risk is an understatement,” Valerie interjected. “Humans are dangerous, Lilith. You have to stop this.”
“Sam is not dangerous! He’s different from other humans.”
“Oh so it’s Sam is it?” Valerie sighed. “Well don’t forget. That’s what you said about the last human you got too close to.” My hand subconsciously covered my scarred cheek.
“Val, you know as well as I that not all humans are dangerous. Why would he kiss her if he wanted to harm her?” Elizabeth asked.
“Maybe the same reason the human that almost killed her was so nice and inviting to her.”
“He’s not like that,” I muttered.
“No? I’ve seen him Lilith. He carries a gun and he’s from that military base. You know what guns are and what humans do with them. Why would he have a gun if he wasn’t dangerous?” I remained silent. “This has to end Lilith. I care about you. I don’t want to almost lose again. You have to stop seeing him.”
“No,” I said defiantly. Shaking my head I said, “I won’t.” I turned and swam away.
“Lilith!” I heard Elizabeth call after me but I only swam faster.
 -
“Lilith?” I looked up from the rock I was resting on in my cave. Elizabeth swam in from the entrance. “Are you okay?” she asked? I shrugged as I sat up. “She’s wrong you know. Not all humans are dangerous and bad.”
“Sam isn’t.”
“I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt.”
“Valerie won’t.”
“She’s just worried. Val’s had plenty of bad run ins with humans just like you and I. She’ll come around eventually.” Elizabeth smiled. “Let’s not forget she was having problems of her own with a human.”
“She probably drowned him,” I muttered.
“I doubt that.” Elizabeth sighed. “Well it’s getting dark so I’m gonna go. And maybe you should give your human Sam another visit.” I watched as she left before getting up and grabbing my bag.
As I swam along towards the shore where I always met Sam I hoped he’d be there tonight after abruptly leaving the night before. A small part of me hoped he might kiss me again. With a smile I shook the thought from my head.
When I got nearer to the shore I could hear familiar faint singing. “Oh no,” I muttered to myself as I swam faster. As I got closer and the singing got louder I knew without a doubt that it was Valerie. As the shore came into view so did Valerie.
She was swimming near the surface singing to lure him into the water. Sam’s arm was reaching down into the water just above her. “No!” I screamed as she reached up and grabbed his arm, pulling him into the water. “Let him go!” I yelled as I swam over to her.
“Why should I?” she asked as she wrapped her extra long tail around him. “Why should I let him have the opportunity to kill you?”
“Please, Valerie.” I watched Sam as he struggled trying to get free while holding his breath. He wouldn’t be able to hold it indefinitely. “Let him go.”
“No!” she growled. “He’ll get you killed or worse! And I won’t let that happen again!”
“He’s different!” As I spoke I watched as Sam managed to free one of his arms. My eyes widened when I saw what he was holding. “Don’t!” I yelled as I swam over and grabbed his arm holding the knife. While I stopped him from harming Valerie, the knife cut deep into my arm and he dropped the knife.
Valerie let go of Sam in shock. As he swam up to the surface I cradled my injured arm against my stomach. Valerie swam over to me. “I told you,” she said quietly.
“Just go away.” I turned away from her. As she swam away my gaze drifted down, the glint of the knife blade catching my eye. I slowly swam down and picked it up cautiously. Looking up toward the surface I swam back up.
When I reached the surface I cautiously reached my hand up above the water and placed the knife on the rock. I then quickly withdrew my hand, my gaze now falling on my still bleeding wound. With a sigh I swam down to gather moss and seaweed to tend to it. After carefully wrapping my wound I swam back up to the surface.
With caution I slowly peeked my head above the surface. Sam was lying on his back on the rocks breathing heavily. Slowly I swam closer to the rocks edge. His head turned when heard me swim through the water.
“Lilith?” He moved closer to the edge making me swim backwards keeping distance between us. A defeated look crossed his face as he sat back. When he saw the knife he slowly picked it up and put it back in its sheath on his hip. Returning his gaze to me he quietly said, “I’m sorry.” Turning away slowly I dived below the surface and swam away.
When I reached my cave I curled up on my bed. Maybe Valerie was right. Sam might have cut me by accident but he was going to hurt Valerie. But she was going to kill him. I was feeling so confused and hurt. My arm throbbed in pain from my injury. With a sigh I decided to sleep. If my arm was still bad in the morning I’d go see Elizabeth of Valerie.
-
I had planned on going to see Elizabeth and Valerie but instead chose to aimlessly swim around. My arm still hurt but it was healing. I just didn’t want to give Valerie the satisfaction of being right about Sam. As my heart began to ache again I hugged myself. I had hoped more than anything he had been different. But the wound on my arm proved otherwise.
Sighing heavily I swam faster not caring where I was going. All I wanted was to escape the inevitable truth. All I could hear in my head was Valerie saying I told you. Why did she have to be right? Why did I have to fall for another human’s tricks? Why did I have to fall for him?
As much as I was in denial I had fallen in love with him. This only made everything hurt even more. Truth was my heart was broken and there was nothing I could do to fix it.
Swimming along trying to ignore my heartache I heard the sound of something in distress. I immediately recognized the sound as a shark the humans called great whites. Most mer avoided sharks because they were too dangerous. I however was fond of them and quickly swam towards the noise.
The shark was caught on a hook from a human boat. As it struggled against the hook I swam over and tried to calm it. “Whoa easy boy, easy.” I gently rubbed it’s side. “Here, let me help you.” Carefully I removed the hook from it’s mouth. “There you go. Now let’s get out of here.” The shark began to swim off but before I could I net came down around me. “No!” I shouted as I quickly became entangled in the net. The shark turned and watched, swimming closer and biting the net to try and free me.
The net started to be pulled up. Looking at the shark I said, “Go! Don’t get caught.” The shark hesitated before swimming off.
As the net broke the surface I looked up at the few humans looking over the side. One of the turned and shouted, “You are not going to believe this.” As the net was raised above the side I realized this wasn’t a fishing boat, it was a research boat. Based on the firearms some of them carried I couldn’t help but wonder if they were from the same military base as Sam.
“Holy shit,” one of the women said as she and the others all stared at me in shock. I hissed at her as she walked closer.
“What do we do?” Another man asked. I hissed and thrashed trying to free myself. The woman’s brows furrowed as she stared at me.
“We take it back with us.” She turned and walked away as a few men came over to the net. “Imagine what we could learn from studying a creature like this.” The men grabbed the net and pulled me out. Overpowering me they moved me below deck and put me into a small tank locking the lid above me.
I banged on the side of the tank but they ignored me. Curling up in a corner I hugged myself as the fear began to sink in. Whenever we’d say to each other about being killed by humans or worse, this is what we meant by worse. To be at the mercy of human scientists was considered a worse fate than death.
As I listened to the sound of the engines starting I realized there was nothing I could do. Closing my eyes I hugged myself tight. There was nothing anyone could do. I was trapped.

Different monsters reactions to your period
warning: lots of period sex, pussy eating, and blood. You have been warned!
A/N: I’m on my period and wanted to write something horny and comforting…
Werecreatures/hybrids are already going insane when you ovulate, but once you start bleeding they can’t resist properly mounting and mating you. You’re their sweet mate, and they both want to breed you and help with the pain by fucking you and eating you out until you’re too tired to think.
Vampires of course are immediately drawn to your pussy, the smell of your blood making them drool. Some are pushing your panties to the side the second you start your period, knowing before you do. They become attached to your pussy, and possibly save some of your blood for later once they’ve had their fill. They especially love to save your cum that’s mixed with period blood, finding the taste exquisite.
Mermen get extremely protective during this time, afraid you’ll attract some underwater predator that thinks you’re easy prey becuase you’re bleeding. They’ll get horny, but are more focused on protecting than procreating. They will slip into you and sing to you as they fill you will cum, though!
Androids are immediately worried, fussing over you as they scan your body to check your health status. They give you medicine, keep you in bed, and fuck their fingers into you to help soothe your bloody cunt. They sink their synthetic cock into you, claiming it’s to help with your pain, but really they just want to fuck that pretty pussy of yours and hear you mewl like never before.
Nagas stay coiled around you, struggling to understand your strange body and why they feel so horny and protective over you during this time. It makes them anxious, and they’re extra clingy as you keep their cock warm. They’re strangely fascinated by the way blood oozes from your pussy while they bounce you lightly, and definitely end up tasting it. They get addicted to it, now you have a needy, pussy drunk naga on your hands. At least it makes you feel better to cum while you’re cramping…
Incubi/demons of course become sex crazed, and you don’t get much rest while they’re keeping you pinned down. Your pussy is always puffy and abused during this time, and they lick up every last drop of your blood, seeing it as a sign that you’re healthy and ready to make love and produce offspring. After your period they become the clingiest, most doting partners ever and feel kind of bad that they went insane while you were menstruating.

This was so wholesome and sweet and well written and I love everything about it!
Ugh I need art of this fic so bad pleaseeee cant you just see Miguel????
Beneath The Wave
Summary: Today is a major day for Miguel, and he is beyond excited. His research team has finally been able to secure a merperson, but when he meets them it’s not at all what he expects.
Word count: ~5k
CW: reader in captivity, inaccurate mermaid facts (just roll with me), discussions of lost family, grief, trauma, probably run-on sentences, overuse of ellipses
Dedicated to (and beta'd by) the incredible @my-secret-shame-but-fanfiction For always inspiring me to write when I never considered myself an author.

Miguel felt proud being one of the few marine biologists authorized to study the life cycle of merfolk, the rare and elusive aquatic people that lived below the surface of the earth's great oceans. Today he was finally going to meet the merperson he had been paired with to begin his studies. He made his way to the large glass tanks of water, as his fellow associates begin to take various readings from the surrounding computers. On the far end of the expansive tank, Miguel saw a figure swimming, the water rippling as they swam around, curious of the space.
"Holy shock..."
You swim around the tank, confused and disoriented. One moment you were swimming in the open water and the next thing you know, you’re looking at land-walkers in a clear vessel of sorts. Miguel looks at you in awe. You were absolutely stunning; your tail glimmering in the harsh lighting of the research lab as you swim closer to towards him. He quickly took out a small notebook from his shirt pocket along with a mechanical pencil to take down notes for his study.
"Hello. My name is Miguel O'Hara, and it is a pleasure to meet you. Mind if I ask you a few questions?"
You tilt your head slightly as he speaks. You swim close enough to press your hands against the tank. Seeing your confusion, Miguel stepped closer to you. Using what little bit of merfolk knowledge he had, he put one hand on his chest, then gestured to you before saying, "Me...Miguel..." He repeated this gesture several times hoping you would understand.
You try to repeat him but find the shapes difficult to form with your lips. They feel clunky on your tongue “M-Mi...”
Realizing this was harder than he thought, Miguel tried again. Pointing at his chest, then back to you before pointing at his mouth and speaking slowly and clearly. As he spoke, he made sure you could see the movements his tongue and mouth as they formed his name. You keep your eyes on his face, slowly piecing together his intent. “M-Mig…uel” You repeat back, unsure of your accuracy.
Miguel nodded his head, pleased with your progress. If you could grasp the concept of names, his project might get done faster. He put a hand on his chest again, pointing at himself, before moving them to point at you. As he spoke the words “Your name”, he hoped you would understand what he was asking. "Tell me your name?” You tilt your head again, as you process his request. It takes a few moments, but you string together the syllables to tell Miguel your name. One of the researchers nearby gasps at your communication with Miguel. If he hears it, Miguel doesn’t respond. He smiles, writing it down in his small notebook. Glancing up, he noticed your focused gaze and nods. "Very good. You did well," he said softly, in hopes that the compliments would help encourage you to continue communicating with him.
“Good...You?” You smile showing off your bright but slightly sharp teeth. Miguel chuckles nervously, unable to ignore the potential lethality of your teeth. But he makes a note of it and pushes through the moment. "Very good. Now let's talk about an external exam so we can gather information about you. Are you alright with that?" Miguel asked, hoping to get consent to study your body and make notes for his report. You tilt your head in the other direction as though trying to decipher what he is saying. Miguel sighed, realizing that he was going to have to simplify his request. He pointed to your tail, before making a motion with his hands like he writing in his notepad. "Just to study you. So, we can learn..."
You watch him make the “writing” motion and mimic it. Miguel smiles and nods “yes. Study your tail.” He points to your tail again. He draws a crude, but recognizable illustration of you and your tail, hoping you’d be intrigued at the drawings. His eyes widen slightly as you examine the drawing, your eyes inquisitive. He held the notebook up to the tank, pointing to the illustration. Miguel looked at the notebook and back at you, eagerly hoping he had successfully gotten his message through to you. You look at your tail and then back to Miguel a few times before pulling yourself up onto the ledge of the tank, your tail-fin dripping down the glass.
Miguel's eyes widen further in excitement. You had understood his meaning and had pulled yourself up to the ledge, Your tail looking even more incredible as he looks on. His heart rate increasing as he realizes you were giving him permission to study you. He quickly began writing his observations in his notebook, studying every detail of your tail; from the scales, color, and fins, to the length and shape. You watch Miguel movements as he studies your tail and takes notes. You are as curious of him as he is of you. Miguel continued his observations and measurements, careful not to touch you in any way.
He looks up at you and presses the tips of his fingers together, “May I touch your tail?” He presses his fingertips together a few more times trying to convey his message. You nod, flicking the end of your tail towards him. His eyes light up as he carefully examines your tail, noticing that the scales were cold and slightly rough. He quickly made a note in his notebook about your body temperature and texture. Miguel's mind was brimming with information and questions. He was fascinated by the scales. The texture and size were larger than he had originally thought. The coloring intrigues him; what was the significance of them? Were there for camouflage? He pondered.
"Fascinating..." he murmured under his breath, his fingers gliding along the length of your tail. Your tail twitching slightly as he studies it, the powerful muscles moving reflexively. As Miguel continues his observations, he feels the slight flex the powerful muscle beneath. He quickly writes his observations in his notebook, adding the information to the growing list in his notes. Miguel's curiosity only increased with the more he learned.
"Incredible!" he muttered excitedly under his breath, his eyes locked with you before he continued his observations, "You're absolutely amazing.” Miguel smiled warmly at you, captivation clear on his face. As he continued his observations, writing down his thoughts and questions almost frantically.
"I-I have some more questions... If that's okay..."
You slide back into the water, keeping your head and chest propped up on the ledge. You look at him expectantly. Miguel smiled at you as you remained on the ledge.
"Just to help me understand you..." Miguel paused briefly before continuing, "are you able to understand what I’m saying right now?" He held up a finger to his lips to symbolize the word 'speak' in the hopes that you’d would recognize the gesture.
You mimic his finger sign for speak and then gesture your hands to show "a little”. Miguel immediately writes down that you were able to understand some English with the help of signs and motions. When he looks up from his notebook, you gesture for Miguel to come closer to the edge of the tank. As Miguel steps forward, you pull your upper body further over the ledge. Curious to see what you would do or what your intentions were, he lowers his notebook to focus solely on you. You lean forward and press your forehead against his, causing him to stiffen slightly as your cool skin pressed against his. For the a briefest moment, Miguel feels slightly stunned as you lean away and slide back into the tank.
“This is better. We should be able to better communicate now.” You reply, smiling at him. Miguel stands there, bracing against the glass tank as he tries to clear his head, “W-what was…what did you do?”
“I gave us the ability to communicate, or rather, allowed myself to speak your language.” You explain. “Merfolk had developed a way to communicate with others who don’t speak our language or dialect. Now we can speak freely.” Miguel is baffled, writing down your explanation in his notebook. He looks up at you “I have so many questions…”
“Well…I seem to have some time, being stuck in this…vessel.” You reply as you tap the glass tank. Miguel's eyes widened as he proceeds to ask you all manner of question. He asks about your age and life expectancy, family structures and diet. You answer to the best of your ability while also asking him questions of your own, inquiring about land-walkers and what a “lab” is.
“I like talking to you Miguel. It is interesting learning about land-walkers from you. You don’t seem like the ones we were told.” You remark as you swim idly back and forth in front of him. Miguel smiles, finding himself enjoying speaking with you. Over the course of the last few hours the conversation, he has begun to speak with you less as a research subject and more like something else. Something less clinical and more familiar. He couldn't help but feel a sense of joy and excitement at the thought of being able to communicate with you. Miguel smiled softly.
"I like talking to you too. It has been one of the most intriguing and exciting moments of my life."
“May I ask you a question Miguel? Where does this…fascination with the ocean and merfolk come from?  Why study us so intensely.” You swim over to him, your gaze intense as ever, though he has grown accustomed to it. Miguel chuckles “I’m not sure. I’ve always liked the water but not the beach or the shallows. The depths, the unknown.” He looks at you sheepishly “I know that may sound childish, but it has fueled my research, ultimately leading me here.”
You laugh softly, “It does not sound childish to me. The depths are wonderful.” Miguel smiles at your kind response, your laughter a joyful melody.  After a moment, Miguel speaks up again, his voice was softer, "Can I ask you something? Off the records…" You notice a shift in his tone and press against the glass “Of course. What do you wish to ask?” Miguel moved closer to the glass, a soft flush creeping onto his face. His eyes were fixed on yours as he asked the question that had been plaguing his mind for the last hour of your conversation.
"I know how this is going to sound. But hear me out.” He prefaces the question, his nerves getting the better of him. “Do you think…it was a coincidence I saw you in my dreams before today, before you were bought here?" Miguel's voice was hesitant, unsure if he should share such personal information. He knows it sounds ridiculous, but it had felt so real. Your brow furrows in confusion “I was in your dream? Me specifically? What do you mean?”
Miguel sighs, “I know how it sounds. But in my dream, I remember there was the endless blue…a soft melody and someone who looked like you.” Miguel leaned in slightly, voice soft and uncertain. "I...I dreamt of you I think. The melody you were singing, I couldn't hear the words, but I knew it was meant for me." Miguel took a deep breath, feeling both foolish and vulnerable in equal measure, but he continued to speak, his words soft and sincere. "I’ve had that dream before sometimes…the ocean and the melody but there was never someone else there. It never felt as...real as it did last night."
You float in front of him, tail swaying in the water of the tank and hands pressed against the glass. You look around the lab and see a few other researchers checking readouts or on their computers.
“Come back when the others are gone. I wish to help, but not when they are around” you reply softly. Something about what Miguel had said isn’t sitting right but discussing it around the other land-walkers feels worse. Miguel's frowns slightly as your instruction but only for a moment. If you were going to take him seriously, the least he could do was humor you as well. He also couldn't deny the rush of anticipation that coursed through him. What did you know? And why were you so remiss to share it now? He opens his mouth to protest but after seeing the seriousness in your eyes, decides against it.
"Okay. I'll stay late in the lab. After the others leave, we can talk.” Miguel whispered back; his eyes still locked on yours. You nod and smile again before swimming away, doing a few laps of the tank. Miguel lingered at the edge of the tank, watching your figure move gracefully through the water. The way you glided through the water was mesmerizing, and he couldn't look away.  After a few minutes, Miguel pulled himself away from the tank, knowing he had other work to attend to. He didn’t want to part, he wanted answers; but he felt reassured by his promise to return later. You entertain yourself in the tank, eating the food another researcher dumps into the water. The taste is nothing like freshly caught food, but it suffices for the moment. Eventually you settle towards the bottom of the tank for a nap.
After the day's work ended, and all the other researchers had gone home. Miguel made his way to the glass tank where you were kept, the anticipation and curiosity inside him increasing with every second. As he approached the tank, he saw you resting, your body curled up, your tail fluttering idly. He couldn't help but smile at the sight. Miguel approached the tank and softly knocked on the glass. You startle slightly before your brain registers what you’re seeing.
“Miguel?” You voice thick with sleep.
Miguel nodded his head, a soft, slightly embarrassed smile on his face.
“I didn’t mean to startle you. The others have gone home now. We can talk now” He grabs a chair and rolls it over to the tank, sitting in front of you. You nod and swim over to him “tell me of your dreams Miguel.” Miguel took a moment to collect his thoughts before speaking.
"I often dream of massive underwater pools and shimmering light. There is always a soft melody playing. Last night though was different.  I saw you or…someone like you and they were singing the song. It was mesmerizing a-and comforting." Miguel paused, his voice softer as he continued, "And I felt...linked to you. I can't explain it. It was so familiar." He looks at you hoping you had an answer for him.
“If I sang the song, would you recognize it?” You ask quietly. There aren’t many songs you know, but what did you have to lose. Miguel nodded without hesitation, his curiosity overriding his initial nerves. "Yes, y-yes I would know it immediately." Miguel couldn't help but wonder if you knew what he was talking about, more importantly, what it meant. After a tense few moments, you begin to sing a soft sweet melody. Miguel leaned in closer as you sang, his breath hitching as you sing. That was it! It was the melody from his dreams. Hearing you sing it, envelops him in a warmth that he can’t fully put into words.
"That’s it. That’s the song..." Miguel mumbled softly, his voice nearly overcome by emotion. You stop singing and look at him in shock “That’s impossible. You must be mistaken. No one knows that song…”
Miguel leaned in closer to the tank, his brow furrowed in confusion. “I do! I’m positive that’s the song I hear in my dreams." You swim closer to the glass, both hands pressed against its cool surface. Your heart beginning to hammer in your chest “what do you remember from your childhood?” Miguel’s brow furrows in confusion at the sudden shift in conversation. Though he didn’t understand it, he takes a moment trying to describe his childhood. He closed his eyes for a moment and tried to focus. “My parents were kind enough; I went to school. I had a few friends. I liked science a lot, but that’s obvious, I guess. There is nothing remarkable I can recall.”
“Before that…” You urge “Can you remember anything before school and your parents?” Miguel presses the heels of his hands against his eyes as he tries to dig deeper into his own memories “Just glimpses and feelings”, his whispers. His brow furrows deeper “There’s…the smell of salty air, a-and water. And that song. It feels like that song has always been in my head. That's all I can remember." Miguel's eyes opened, shaking his head slightly.
You try to lean in closer “try harder...please!”
Miguel sighs, his voice tinged with frustration. "There's nothing..." He said softly, "I just...know this song. But I don't know how I know it or why..." Miguel's head hurt as he tried to dig deeper, trying to pull out memories buried deep in the recesses of his mind.
In a last-ditch effort, you ask Miguel a question in Atlantean that translates into "can you understand me?" Miguel looks at you before shaking his head, "No I'm sorry, I don’t-" Miguel stopped mid-sentence, his eyes going wide as he realizes he understood what you asked. "I...I understand you...", he replies shakily. “It ...can't be” you murmur softly, as you study Miguel’s face.
Miguel could see your expression change, your facial features reflecting the same confusion and surprise that he felt. He couldn't believe what was happening, his mind raced to come up with an explanation. "You..." Miguel stands up from his chair and walks to the tank, his voice laced with uncertainty, "Why can I understand you...?"
You look at Miguel with wide eyes. “That song...the melody you remember...my mother sang it to me as a youth, and when I was older, she sang it to my younger brother...”
Miguel listened to your words, his mind still reeling from the knowledge that he understood her, that he had somehow knew this song that your mother had sang to you and your brother. He feels a shiver run through him. He knew that the melody was more than just a song. It was a connection, but he didn’t understand for the life of him how. "You have a baby brother...?" Miguel whispered, his voice shaking.
You nod shakily. “I had...we...” You look at Miguel heartbroken as you recount the day you lost everyone. “My family was attacked, our clan. It was chaos. Land-walkers with nets and vessels and weapons. W-we got separated. My brother was taken. My parents died trying to protect us.” Your hands slip down the glass as your voice softens, “the only people who know that song are my mother, my brother and I.” Miguel saw the sadness in your eyes, and his heart shatters. He wanted to reach out and comfort you, to offer something more than simple platitudes. He leaned closer to the tank, his hands on the glass as if he could touch your hand through it. "I-." he whispered softly, his voice filled with sorrow, "I'm so sorry..."
You look up at him, fighting your own melancholy to find some answers. “You are always drawn to the beach, aren’t you?” You ask urgently, “You feel more at home in the water that on land, a comfort you can’t describe.  Y-Your ability to swim, to dive, to hold your breath underwater is leagues better than your friends, isn’t it?”
Miguel blinked, taken aback by your words. He had always felt a connection to the water, a sense of belonging in its depths that he couldn't explain. Hearing you describe it so accurately was...unsettling. "H-how did you know that?" Miguel whispered, his voice barely above a breath. You speak one word in Atlantean, cutting through the tension between you and Miguel. The weight it carries is immeasurable "Tha'lan?" A stifling silence blankets the lab, you and Miguel staring at each other. Miguel looks shocked as the word settles in his mind. His heart pounding as he tried to understand what it all meant, to make the onslaught of information make sense. He still didn't understand how he could understand you, why he knew a song only your family knew, or why you called him “Tha’lan”.
"Brother...?" Miguel whispered, staring at you in awe, "Wh-what did you say...?"
“I need to get out” You swim up towards the ledge of the tank, pulling yourself over it. “I have to see.” Miguel watched with concern as you made her way towards the ledge of the tank, your intent clear. He quickly moved to stop you." Wait! Hold on. You can't just-" Miguel's voice was full of worry as he pleaded with you to stop. You pull yourself up onto the ledge, forcing your tail to split and change into legs before stumbling towards him. Miguel's eyes widened in surprise as he watches you transform your tail into legs. He grabs a nearby towel and immediately rushes over to cover you, his mind racing with a mixture of concern and fascination.
"You..." Miguel whispered, his voice so soft, you could hardly hear it, "how...how did you...?" Single minded in your effort to answer the question burning a hole in your heart, “Mother always said we were two halves. That we were inseparable even though we weren’t twins.” You force the sleeve of his lab coat up and check his arm.
“Give me strength…” you whisper
Miguel's body stiffens again as you touched him, your cool fingers dancing on the delicate flesh of his arm. Your words about being inseparable with your brother echoed through his mind. Miguel swallowed hard, his voice shaking slightly as he spoke, "What is it? What are you looking for?" You hold up your wrist to him, a birthmark on your wrist matches perfectly with the one on his arm, lining up as if there were photo-negatives of each other.Miguel stared at your wrist, his eyes wide in shock as he takes in how the birthmark matched his perfectly. "How...how is this possible?" Miguel whispered; his voice shaky as he looked back at you. Miguel felt his heart pounding in his chest, his mind racing with a million thoughts. His words came out in a jumble as he tried to make sense of it all.
"You...I…How…what does this mean?"
You look up at Miguel, eyes brimming with tears, heart hammering away so hard that you fear it may free itself from your ribcage. “Tha'lan...Wh-What happened to you? Who...how did you end up here with land-walkers?”  You ask softly
Miguel's heart felt like it was about to burst. “I don't remember. I just know that this has been my life as long as I can remember. I've grown up with them. I-I don’t know anything else." His shoulders sag, almost as if in defeat. "This is the only life I’ve ever known, and I can't say I mind the life I have here on the surface. But...there's always been this feeling...a longing for or an absence of something I couldn’t name." You wrap your arms around him and hug him tightly, a few tears running down your cheeks “I missed you so much little brother.” A myriad of emotions flow through him as you embrace, a mixture of joy, sorrow, and nostalgia. He wrapped his arms around you, holding you just as tight as he tried to comprehend the reality of the situation.
"I missed you too," he whispered softly, his voice filled with a mix of contentment and grief, "I never knew about you...but I know I felt like something was missing. That the family I had here felt off somehow.” You pause, simply content to have found your younger brother alive and well. You begin to softly hum the lullaby your mother sang to you two again, in a moment of tenderness. After a while, you speak up softly “You have mother’s hair…and her eyes.” Miguel pulled back to look at you, his eyes filling with surprise.
"I...I do?" he asked softly, his voice trembling with disbelief. He had no frame of reference, no clear memories to pull from. Having been so young when the land-walkers attacked, he couldn't recall her voice or her face. His voice shook slightly as he continued, "What was she like...?"
You chuckle softly, wiping the tears from your cheeks “she was driven and so damn passionate. She had a laugh that could change the tides, but she was gentle with us and so loving” You recall fondly. “She used to tie you to her back with strands of woven seaweed while you learned to use your tail”  You smile as you reminisce, “You hadn't learned to master it at all but she was so patient with you.” Miguel’s emotions threaten to drag him under, hearing you describe his mother, your mother so fondly fills him with joy and sorrow in equal measure.
“And what about our father?” He asks, “What was he like?”
“Oh you were his pride and joy. He adored you, both of us to be fair. They both loved us with everything they had. He taught us about the tides and the creatures, even when we were young. They always told me to look after you...’the depths are vast, don't let them come between you’” You repeat your mother’s words to Miguel. You reach down and gently rub at your legs, wincing slightly. The discomfort of being on land with legs, starting to creep in. You ignore the sensation, determined not to be separated from your brother after all this time, even if it’s through the glass tank. You smile at Miguel “Was your childhood okay? Were you safe? D-did the land-walkers treat you well?”
"I was safe…am safe” Miguel replies softly, "I was found I guess and taken in by my…by the family I have now. They cared for me like I was one of their own...treated me like a son. They never told me about…my ‘adoption.’ They would change the topic when I was younger and as I got older, I stopped asking."
You nod, fighting back your own tears as you smile “good, that’s good. You were safe. as long as you were safe, I don't care.” Tears freely slip down your cheeks “I never...I didn't know if you were hurt o-or alive… but look at you” You hold his hand and gently squeeze it “you're all grown up...all big and strong”
Tears prick Miguel’s eyes as he listened to you. He was overwhelmed by a mix of guilt and empathy, feeling responsible for being rescued while you had been left alone and without family. Miguel took a breath, his voice filled with a mixture of regret and compassion, "I wish...I wish things had been different. I wish we'd grown up together."
“I wish we were able to grow up together too. But I’m glad that I found you, er- I guess that you found me.” You chuckle, but the sound crumples into a low groan of pain. The discomfort of being on land spiking into something you can’t ignore anymore. You step back regrettably from Miguel “I…I must get back in the vessel. The change…isn’t permanent and-” Miguel nods immediately understanding as he helps you back over the ledge of the tank. The pain beginning to fade into discomfort and mild irritation as you slip back into the water, your tail reforming. You swim back to the glass and press your hands on it, taking a minute to steady your heartbeat. “you have one too, a tail I mean. Even if it’s been many years since you changed.”
Miguel glances at your tail. His own heart thumping, as he tried to understand what you meant. "I have a tail?" Miguel said incredulously, his voice soft and hesitant. "But...how? I’ve always had legs. How would I even turn...my legs into a tail?"
“It’s hard to put into words, and I do not wish to do so here in this place. I would prefer to be in the water, in our home, “you explain “But you have a life here...on land and I’m...this lab has me as a creature...” Miguel pauses, his mind racing.
"Okay, well first things first, we need to find a way to free you from the lab," Miguel said softly, his voice filled with determination, "I won't let them keep you in here...you need to be free, then we can figure out the rest." Miguel looked at you with a hopeful expression, "Sound good?"
You feel your heart flutter in your chest as what he is implying “Y-you're going to...what about the lab. The research?”
Miguel chuckled softly, a soft smile on his face as he spoke, "You are more important than any experiment, that goes without saying. I won't let them keep you here against your will." Miguel places his hand on the glass again, mirroring yours “And as for my research...I can keep it up from anywhere. I can work with you...not the other way around."
You smile brightly, a genuine smile that lights up your face “If you free me...I'll teach you everything I can about our people, our culture, our family” you whisper earnestly “just free me from this vessel...please.”
Miguel smiles at you, “It’s like mother said the depths are vast, I won’t let it come between us now that I know” You smile, bracing both hands on the glass. You can feel the adrenaline beginning to wear off from the emotional reunion and your transformation. “Promise me you’ll return tomorrow. That you’ll free me from this vessel” You ask earnestly.
Miguel nods, his stance steadfast “I promise you. I’ll be back first thing in the morning. I’ll figure something out and get you out of there.” You smile weakly at his assurance and begin to drift to the bottom of the tank, curling up to make yourself as comfortable as possible.
“Pelayo...that's what mother called you” you murmur as fatigue seeps into your bones “Your birthname is Pelayo.” Miguel's eyes widened as he heard you say his name, his true name. He'd never heard it before, but hearing you speak it...it felt like home
"Pelayo," he whispered the name out loud, a lump forming in his throat as he did. It felt so natural, like he'd said the word a thousand times before. He smiled, "I like it..."
“Praelis aevos Pelayo” You utter quietly as you drift off to sleep, a gentle smile on your face. Miguel watched as you settle and drift off to sleep. His heart swelling with love and gratitude for you.
"Sleep well. I’ll get you out of there" he whispered softly, before turning and walking away. He could feel the bond you shared, and he couldn't help but feel a sense of protection over you. Miguel took one last look at you before heading out of the lab and out to the parking lot. Miguel made his way to his car, his mind still whirling from the events of the evening. As he sat in his car, he glances at his birthmark, smiling. He couldn't help but think about what the future might hold for the two of you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It is the 19th century and you are returning home by ship. Before you embark, you happen to find a glowing shell abandoned by the docks. It seems that the sea creatures are searching for it. Or maybe it's something else they're interested in. content: gender neutral reader, violence, dubious consent, based on Return of the Obra Dinn
Tumblr media
January 1802 What's the matter with me, I wonder? As if my luggage wasn't heavy enough already, I had to drag around a big shell of sorts. Found it by the docks while I waited for my ship to arrive. It has a strange glow to it, this shell. Can't quite place it.
January 1802 Cheeky bastards! The seamen are such a flirt. From the moment I stepped onto the main deck, a handful of them haven't dropped the whistles and stares. One of the topmen - I recall he's Scottish? - he's been pestering me about the ship. "I'll show ye around, can't find a better guide," he says. His mates laugh and clap to his petty attempts.
February 1802 Some of the sailors are dying from lung illness. I was on the orlop deck, playing cards with the three Russians, when the surgeon rushed to one of the cabins ahead. "If it was contagious, we'd all have it by now. Damned if I know what it is, or where it comes from," I could hear him groan. I wondered out loud if I might catch it myself, but then I noticed one of 'em rascals trying to cheat the cards. February 1802 I saw it again tonight. Ever since we launched from Falmouth, as soon as the sun sets, there's an eerie glimmer in the distance. It reminds me of this damned shell. Are my eyes playing tricks on me? Oh, the sea is so terrifying in the dark. There's nothing but black stretching all around. My window is low; whenever the waves break against it, the wooden walls let out a groan that awakens me from the deepest slumber. Surgeon gave me pills to sleep. The creaks of the ship sound like a weeping maiden. February 1802 I think the cursed glow is getting closer. I couldn't sleep anymore, so I snuck onto the main deck. Scotsman found me wandering towards the bow, so he quietly hoisted me up by the waist. I thought he'd tell the Captain, but he sat me on the lower rigging, next to him, and we listened to the waves. I was afraid I'd fall off, but he kept a steady hand on me. I wish I could tell him about the light stalking our ship. Would he think I'm mad?
February 1802 Second Mate returned today on a small boat. We heard shouts coming from upstairs, so we rushed to see what was happening. Bosun had his pistol readied next to the Captain, and the sailors lifted the cargo from below. I thought I was dreaming at first. Some creatures, unholy beings, were caught in the net. They had the body of a human, but thick, fish tails covered in spikes. One of the Formosan passengers muttered something in Chinese, and some of the tail spikes suddenly pierced him dead. The old Miss next to me fainted on the spot, and the stewards urged us to leave. Right before I turned, I noticed one of the beasts pointing at me. It had a monstrous grin on its face. Oh, what a sight! The Scotsman guided me away, but I can't forget those eyes. Was it malice? Such an intense stare, burning straight into my soul. Now that I'm writing all this, a memory has come to mind: the creature had the same shell as mine, dangling from its neck.
February 1802 The pills no longer work. I can't rest anymore. Every time I close my eyes, I hear its wretched voice, calling me from the lazarette. That's where they locked those sea monsters. It sings nonsense, blasphemous lies. We're not fated soulmates. I've nothing to do with those devils. I should've never picked up the shell. I can only pray we reach land soon.
March 1802 God, oh God, what disaster has befallen us? I don't have much time. The gun deck is in shambles, more than half the crew dead. Underwater beasts have crawled their way up our ship; strange humans with spears, saddled on top of crabs larger than I've ever seen. The poor midshipman, oh, a young boy! He set himself on fire to stop the nightmarish fiend. Threw the lamp across the floor, and the flames swallowed both of them up. I scrambled up on the main deck, but there was no peace to be found; colossal tentacles sprawled around the ship, pulling the rigging apart, tearing humans like insects. The Captain's wife was struck by a falling pillar, I saw her crumble right before me. Scotsman is still alive, but his arm is missing a good chunk of it. I don't know where to find the surgeon.
March 1803 They left. They took the last boat, I only found out this morning. I tried to join them, but one of the sailors stopped me. "Witch," he shouted at me, "the beast down by the cargo hold screams your name. You must've called it here, brought this curse upon us." I don't know what he's talking about. Tonight I'm going to the lazarette, I can no longer bear the calling. This blasted fiend, oh, he's ruined me. I'll rot on this wreck. Mother, I don't think I'll ever reach the shore.
Tumblr media
Your steps are hesitant as you tiptoe your way around the dried blood and debris, until you reach the locked chambers. The door is bent and folded away, as if hit by a great force. You do indeed notice the round prints against the rusty surface: giant suckers from a blasphemous being.
There he is, the wicked varmint who plagues your sleep! A pale creature is propped up, halfway out of the water, welcoming you with a toothy grin. The shell around his neck glows mockingly.
You throw your own shell at him. The small, ivory object rolls with a hollow thud.
"Is this what you wanted, damned monster?"
"Why, what am I to do with two?"
His voice is harsh and deep, rapping against your eardrums, scratching the inside of your head.
"I've been waiting for you. Can't leave this place without my beloved, can I?"
"There you go again with this nonsense. Villain! Drown me if you must, but spare me your deceit."
His smile falters, eyes narrowing in a frown.
"Is that how you find my love? Some petty lie told by a charlatan? Ungrateful brat, who do you think freed you from their shackles? Who do you suspect has summoned the leviathan, from the deepest trenches of the sea, to save your mortal soul?"
"The kraken left with the storm," you counter as the blood drains from your face. Could it be that you were to blame, after all?
"No, it left after the bargain."
He pulls himself up and sits on the edge of his former cage. You observe his features in mild awe: the texture of his skin, the dark locks of hair reaching all the way to the tail, the spikes breaking out of the thick, hard scales.
"What bargain," you ask fearfully.
"The last ones are free to escape, if they leave you to me."
Why, your horrified expression is not quite something he expected. Surely one must feel relief once their freedom has been guaranteed. And not just any kind of freedom - you've been returned to your soulmate.
He's spent weeks chasing the currents, trailing the faint glow in the distance. He hasn't stopped once, tail pushing forward to the promise of a reunion.
Yet, you seem unsure. Perhaps his approach has been too hurried, too nonchalant. You need a little bit of convincing, and he happens to be a master of courting.
His thorax suddenly expands, and you can almost hear the twisting sound of his ribs cracking and breaking under the pressure. A sweet voice rolls out of his mouth, a song you've never heard before. Your heart pounds tremendously, threatening to burst out of your chest, and a foreign panic floods your senses.
Despite your desire to flee, your lids are heavy, eyes slowly closing. Through your lashes, you can discern the beast crawling towards you, the same defiant grin plastered on his face.
It's time for you to come home.

There is a world, not far from our own, where creatures and monsters are more beloved than feared. Where they’re hunted down not out of defense and security but due to the greed of collectors looking for their next trophy.
You never had any interest or part in it. Always seeing monsters as people trying to make a living just like yourself. But living near the harbor it’s unfortunately not all that uncommon to see poachers selling off kraken tentacles, a siren’s voice, or a mermaids tail. Anything they can get their hands on, really. It pains your heart to see so many hurt and nothing done about it.
But that is all about to change.
At that same moment, deep in the ocean, a poor Siren is ambushed by a bunch of poachers. Overwhelmed by their forces, captured, and attacked, they heave his extraordinarily long body onto their ship. Left unable to move as they viciously take his only means of defense. His voice. And then they toss him back into the ocean without a care for how vulnerable they have now left him.
At first he doesn’t even realize what has happened, his memory of the attack fuzzy and disoriented. But the moment he tries to speak a sharp pain radiates from his throat and has him curling in on himself against the ocean floor. Trembling eyes widen as realization dawns over him.
The waves of his mourning wash over the surrounding marine flora and turn everything around him into ash. The water turns darker with the storm of his emotions as it threatens to destroy everything in his path.
He stumbles onto land with the need for revenge etched onto his very soul, shedding his tail and walking into the unknown without daring to look back. The humans all stare as he passes, his beauty alone enough to enchant and allure them. But it all means nothing without his voice.
There was no doubt in his mind that he would find the poachers who had done this to him. Even if his memory is still as broken as the rest of him. Determination is the only thing left fueling him and he will not give that up.
But as he cuts his way through the village square, the most wondrous sound breaks through the haze of his fury. He searches hopelessly for the noise and when he finally finds it his gaze lands on you, playing an instrument he has never seen on any of the ships he’s wrecked.
The sound is mesmerizing and he finds himself walking closer to you. Though you don’t even notice him, your eyes closed, and a blissful expression painted on your face. But the music you are playing is anything but blissful. No, it speaks to his soul, it voices every word he can no longer say aloud.
He feels his knees give out beneath him and the pain cuts into his skin. He does not care. All he can do is look upon you and watch as you play the most devastating song he has ever heard. One even his previously infamous voice could never replicate.
When you open your eyes you’re surprised to see this man before you. He a vision of otherworldly beauty. Even as endless tears stream down from his bloodshot eyes. You do not know what horrors this man has gone through but something pulls at you to comfort him.
Not a word is spoken, nor is it needed, as you set down your instrument and take him into your arms. He immediately breaks down and sobs silently in your embrace. You don’t know when you begin to cry along with him but you both hold each other till long past the sun goes down.
As time passes, you teach him to speak with his hands, allowing him to finally communicate with you. His heart flutters as something in his soul clicks back into place at the gift you’ve given him. Having a voice once more.
Now that he can finally talk to you, he immediately shares his tale. Explaining he was not a man but a Siren. He fumbles over his fingers as he recounts the poacher attack, the way they stole everything from him. He confides his wishes to you, his need for revenge.
He’s shocked to see the thunderous rage booming throughout your expression. He didn’t know what to expect but a part of him hadn’t expected your support. Not with how kind, gentle, and loving you are. At least to him you are.
But you do support him and there’s no second guessing that as the two of you immediately begin to make a plan. Leading you to teach him how to speak through his hands in more ways than one.
Not only through his fingers but through the vessel of an instrument. Allowing his hypnotic magic to flow into the object while maintaining the same effect.
Even though he can now speak for himself, the Siren thanks you in the only way he truly knows how. With a kiss that speaks of all his gratitude and admiration for you. He pours all of the love and passion he’s been holding back into it.
His passion only growing into a raging inferno as you both stumble into your chambers. Your bodies intertwined, a mess of limbs and panting breaths as you join together and become one. Now in body as you are in heart.
Afterwards, with your plan in place and his magic, the two of you quickly rise up the ranks of society. Playing for people of both high and low birth. Traveling to villages and cities all across the country. Always in search of the ones who stole from your Siren his most precious gift.
It’s at a charity concert when that fateful day arrives. Your Siren’s pale blue eyes peeling through the crowd as they always do while you play. His heart hammers in his chest once they fall on a group of familiar looking men. Sharp painful visions of the past sear their way back into his mind and knock the wind out of him.
Your own gaze follows his line of sight, seeing the group of questionable looking men. All of them glancing around at the nobles in the room as if they’ve hit the jackpot. Something fierce burns in your belly and you and your Siren begin to play even harder, working as one to help strengthen his magic.
Even you feel something the moment the hypnosis seeps into their skin and latches onto their bones. Now expressionless faces fall onto you and listen as you two play the rest of the concert. None of them moving an inch as the hours pass. Like caught fish latched onto the fishing line and just waiting to be pulled in.
Near the end as you finish up the finale, your Siren uses his magic and directs the men into the back room. Somewhere isolated and private where you won’t be disturbed. The sound of roaring applause and cheering drowns out the beating of your hearts. Neither of you able to focus on their praise when your revenge is so close in sight.
It’s only as the door clicks behind you both does the siren’s song finally break. Clarity returns to the men’s milky eyes and a chorus of displeasure echos throughout the room. You don’t bother to respond. Let them say their last words, let them voice their complaints because soon they won’t be doing much of anything at all.
You narrow in on them, your murderous gazes eventually enough to silence them. And as you both lift up your instructions to deliver the last blow, recognition passes over each and every one of their faces, remembering what they had done to your love.
Your Siren being the last thing they see before perishing at your hands.
This piece was inspired by Schoenberg verklärte nacht op.4 - boulez. Please check it out, it’s such a beautiful song.
