A SessKag Regency Romance for @crescent-dreams sesskag fest!

Summary: After a stroke of bad fortune, Kagome’s life is uprooted. She is moved into an unfamiliar community where she expects life will be very different- and much more miserable- than she’d hoped. But luck, as she’s learned, can turn on a dime.

Chapter One- City

Moving to the city, her one dreaded nightmare. She sighed in sad resignation as the carriage wheels splashed through another hole in the road, causing her head to bump against the door frame she leaned against.

The countryside she’d been born in was lush and vast, with sweet smelling air, endless fields to walk through, lakes and rivers to splash away the summer heat, and quiet, sparkling nights.

Already she could smell the stifling air of the city streets clinging to her clothes, as shops lining the street began to replace the forest in her window.

“Not long now my darling,” her mother reassured, and she managed a smile as best she could to keep her mother from feeling any more guilt.

When her father had died those years ago, her uncle had assured them he would take over the accounts and keep them well managed until her younger brother was old enough to inherit.

He’d lied.

So they’d sold everything they had and moved to the city where her mother’s sister lived to save what they had left for Kagome’s dowry.

A good, prosperous marriage was now essential, and there was no more time to wait, even if the idea of being a wife and having children seemed like something that should still be much farther off. Her family needed her to secure a suitable- and rich- match.

Her good name was all she had left, now.

The Silence - Part 11

Conversation

Silence, to Sesshoumaru, had always been a thing of comfort. It was restful. Undemanding. Familiar. The miko had been right in saying that talking was something Sesshoumaru did not enjoy. Words had never been easy allies to him and they failed him now.

He stared at the woman he loved, stunned to his very marrow. The elation that had been growing in his chest ever since his mother had given them her blessing now lay at his feet, shattered. His gaze was fixed on the wet trail carved into her cheek. He couldn’t look away from those pleading blue eyes that were trained on him, shimmering with tears yet hard as steel.

The pain in them pierced him like a blade.

Each sentence she had just hurled at him had borne claws. They clung to him, tore into his skin and left him bleeding.

He’d always known that words had that power to inflict great hurt. But he had never realised that the silence he so valued could do the same.

He ran his hands down the miko’s spine, wishing to soothe. But his own fingers were trembling. There was a sound lodged in his throat, a keen, shuddering whine. An emotion curled tight in his chest, heavy as a stone.

Sesshoumaru opened his mouth and sighed it out.

“Shame.”

Her grasp of his kimono grew slack at the sound of his voice.

“What?”

“I feel... ashamed,” he repeated, the words halting. They were still hard for him to find and voice, but she needed them and for her he would hunt every single star from the sky. “I did not think... I never saw...” he frowned in frustration.

Kagome untangled her fingers from the front of his kimono. She reached up and laid her hands on his cheeks. The touch grounded him, and his breaths came a little easier.

“It was never my intention to cause you hurt,” he managed at last.

“I know,” she replied softly. But in the way she smiled at him, he could see that no matter his intentions, the hurt was there.

“I agree with you,” he intoned. It was easier, he found, to echo her sentiments than to figure out how to express his own. “We cannot go on like this.” His hand slid to her hip and settled there. “What we have is not enough.”

Kagome sighed and collapsed against him. Her hands fell from his cheeks, her stare finally left his as her forehead tipped forward to rest against his chest.

He gathered her close and buried his nose in her hair.

“Your scent... soothes me. I breathe easier when I sense it.” It was the truth that he had carried in his soul for the longest time now. And the time had finally come to give voice to these innermost thoughts. Because he owed them all to her. Because keeping them secret had caused her great pain. And he needed to brush away all her suffering.

Sesshoumaru took in a deep breath, and spoke. “My heart trembles in your presence. Your beauty is such that it beckons me, leaving me unable to stay away. It gives me pride that someone as brave and caring and powerful as you would have chosen to give yourself to me. I am content just being beside you; it is a happiness deeper than any that I have ever known.”

The scent of her tears prickled his nose again. She shook in his embrace, her grip of him fierce and tight. Her blue gaze met his eyes once again, searching, wondering, hoping.

“I see no flaws when I look at you,” he told her, his voice earnest and wishing to soothe. “That you are human only makes me wish to protect you, though I know you are more than able to protect yourself. That you are unable to have children only concerns me because it brings you pain.”

His fingers were reverent as he cupped her cheek. Gentle as he brushed aside that last, rolling tear. The corners of her lips were turning up, tugging at his heartstrings.

“I took you to see my mother today,” he told her, his low voice breaking a little from all the emotion now swirling inside, out of control, “because I could no longer bear counting the hours until I could see you again. Because I was no longer content to visit you in the dark of the night. I wanted to spend every hour in your company, I yearned to see your beauty out in the sun. I wanted a future, Kagome, with you by my side. So that all could see how well you belong there.”

She let out a choked sound then and silenced him, claiming his lips in a soft, heart-stopping kiss. It tasted salty, from the tears she had spilled, but he could feel the smiling curve of her lip as it moved against his mouth with a purpose.

And knowing that her pain and sorrow had abated at last had his heart soaring even higher than the sweetness of her kiss.

A moment later, he rested his forehead against hers and ran his hand up and down her spine in a languid caress. He gazed at her and drank in her beaming smile. The sight of it was enough to tempt him to kiss her again. But he had not finished gifting her all those words she deserved.

“It is tradition to seek the permission of one’s pack-elder, whenever there is a wish to bring someone new into the pack,” he explained, raking his clawed fingers through her hair. “So I had to seek my mother’s permission and she refused to grant it unless she could meet you. That is why I brought you to my mother today. Because without her permission, I could not have asked you the question that has been living in my heart for so long.”

“What question?” she asked, sliding her arms around his neck. Pressing close.

“Kagome.” He stopped and swallowed. His emotions had swelled into a ball that was lodged in his throat, in a manner both familiar and foreign. He’d never thought he could feel this much, all at once. “Would you do me the honour—” he managed to choke out, before his voice failed him again.

Her fingers toyed with his hair in a very distracting way. But she waited, so kind, so patient, so steady now. He didn’t deserve her. He knew that, but it didn’t stop him from wanting her.

“—and become my mate?”

Her laugh was quick and gorgeous, even as it trembled around the edges.

“Yes,” she said, one last tear sliding down her cheek, her eyes shimmering with happiness.

With that single word, the miko robbed his all of his anew. He was overcome; with gratitude, with pride, with admiration, with satisfaction, with relief, with awe.

With love.

“I love you,” Kagome whispered, unconsciously echoing his thoughts. She greedily swallowed Sesshoumaru’s growl of victory as his lips crashed against hers in joyous triumph.

Mine, he thought, as her heart thudded hard against his. Mine, he thought, as he poured all his elation into the kiss.

“Mine,” he whispered into her neck while she was catching her breath a moment later.

“Same goes,” she replied with a breathless laugh and clung to him even tighter. “Mine.”

Laughter rumbled out of him in answer. He couldn’t have agreed more.

Sneak Peak

"It would be in your best interest to look after yourself first," he reminded her, claws hovering over a pulse point. Kagome nodded silently, then pulled her hands from his grip. She turned away from him, biting the inside of her cheek as she pretended to rifle through her pack for a treat for her dragon companion.

"Shouldn't you be treatin' him too?" Inuyasha called over his shoulder. Kagome stiffened but didn't look up, pulling a few bottles of crushed herbs. She didn't want to touch him at all. It was bad enough they'd been forced into close proximity because he refused to let her out of his sight, but she'd been hoping he'd keep to himself for the most part.

Kouga flexed his hands, testing the mobility now that the burns had gone numb. "Yeah, didn't the big guy take a hit to the back or something?" She knew he had, on her account, no less, but she was dealing with enough without having to treat such a large area.

Who knew what that would do to her?

Even now, she felt his eyes on her, but he eventually got to his feet, returning to his place at the base of the tree. "I do not require human remedies." There was an odd lilt to his voice, but no one commented on it, so Kagome continued treating the rest of them, purposely ignoring the raised hairs on the back of her neck as the sun set.

Sesshomaru watched as the Miko quietly walked away from the campsite. Pain and depression radiated from her aura, causing Sesshomarus instincts to be on edge.

It was unnatural, the dynamics of their pack. Unlike what would be expected, the Miko herself presented as the alpha rather than a son of the greatest alpha to ever live, as one would expect.

And the disrespect she suffered at the hands of her first packmate as an alpha was unheard of. It made him wonder if she even understood her position as leader of the group.
