Can’t stop thinking about a very specific dynamic

A healer and a knight fall in love.

The healer spends hours healing everyone but themselves. Caring for the sick, stitching wounds, setting bones, pushing dislocated limbs back into place. Wearing themselves to exhaustion.

The knight gently tends to the healer. Holds them in a hot bath, rubbing the soreness from their muscles under the warm water. Applies balm to their chapped fingers. Brings them tea and tucks them into bed before climbing in beside them.

The knight defends everyone. Fights off the enemy with a sword and a shield, takes the blows intended for someone else, holds the line until help arrives, fights through any and all injuries they need to in order to defend those under their protection.

The healer defends the knight when they’re down for the count. When the knight collapses, the healer takes up their sword and defends them until they get back to their feet. If someone dares to say anything against their knight they get in their faces and the healers words are sharp and cold as any blade, cutting deep into their opponent.

The idea of a future AU where Merlin and Leon lived together throughout the years after reuniting and eventually fall in love but obviously the knights, Gwen and Arthur don’t know that when they come back so are absolutely baffled when Merlin just kisses Leon in front of everyone randomly like it’s second nature to him and neither of them seem to notice the others staring at them in shock.

Merlin stood at the cottage window listening to Leon pacing the floor behind him. More than a thousand years had still not dulled his knight's instincts.

He turned away, caught up with Leon halfway across the living room, folding himself into his arms. Leon rested his chin atop Merlin’s head and sighed.

"I loved him too."

"It's maybe for the best he wasn't there last year," Merlin mustered a smile as he spoke, looking at the delicate band of gold made to look like leaves woven together on the third finger of his left hand. "He'd have been insufferable. After how polite we were at his wedding." He felt Leon smile into his hair.

Merlin smiled again, so like Leon to make such a declaration in the middle of their shared melancholy.

"Merlin. Whatever comes, however long we wait I'm proud to stand at your side. As your husband. I'm grateful we have lived to see a time I can say that out loud."

"Give over, you've spent the last thousand years with me." He teased.

"I look forward to spending the next thousand with you too." Leon countered, tilting Merlin’s chin up to kiss him.

Successfully distracted, Merlin ran his hands beneath Leon's t-shirt until pain flared white hot behind his eyes and he groaned.

Leon immediately pulled back to look at him, searching his face and feeling his forehead.

"What is it? What's wrong?"

It didn't.

"My magic." He gasped. "There's something...too strong. Hurts." He stumbled towards the door, the cottage too hot though maybe it was just his magic burning beneath his skin. Merlin fell to his hands and knees into the grass, lay down and pressed his face into the earth, hoping it would soothe his roiling elemental power.

Leon sat beside him, running fingers through his hair. When it came to magic, Leon trusted Merlin which was something Merlin would be forever grateful for.

Leon waded in with him until it was to their knees but it wasn't enough, Merlin stumbling again, falling and slipping beneath the water that was somehow impossibly deep; Leon still stood bewildered until he grabbed Merlin’s hand, not prepared to lose him too.

Merlin dragged himself back to his feet, leant on Leon heavily who helped him towards the waterfront. He needed the cool waters of the lake he hated so.

Merlin floated downwards, his wayward magic quiet here. He reached out into the dark water, spreading his fingers until they touched something warm, familiar.

The hand from the depths closed around Merlin’s left, Leon pulling his right until the three of them broke the surface; Arthur gasping his first breath in many lifetimes.

He looked around wildly in the evening light, panic fading at the sight of Merlin and Leon.

Arthur took Leon's offered hand, kissed Merlin while they were still submerged to the shoulders as if he was what gave him back life, tasting sweeter than the summer air.

Summary:

Merlin wakes up after a drunk night out with the knights in Sir Leon’s bed. They are both surprised by this outcome and pretend that it never happened in the first place—something that should be easy enough.

When they keep ending up in bed together after nights out drinking, it becomes harder to ignore. Merlin starts to see Leon in ways he never did before. He's reluctant to act on his new feelings since Leon is one of the king’s most loyal knights, and Merlin is a sorcerer in a kingdom where magic is still illegal. Besides, he's rather sure Leon will never return his feelings.

Merlin and the knights playing never have I ever

At first, it's innocent stuff and Gwaine complains that it's all dull trivia and they need to start getting into the more interesting questions. Leon looks him dead in the eyes and says "Fine. Never have I ever been arrested" Literally everyone but Leon drinks.

From that point it becomes a challenge to see who's done the most outrageously criminal shit "Never have I ever been in a bar fight" "Never have I ever committed identity fraud" "Never have I ever broken someone out of the dungeons" "Never have I ever stolen from the royal vaults" "Never have I ever committed treason with the King still in the room" And Merlin. Just. Keeps. Drinking. Now it's about trying to find something Merlin hasn't done but one of the others has. The answer turns out to be "Never have I ever been banished from a kingdom"

Merlin passes out before he runs out of criminal things he's done. Magic is the only reason he's still alive the next morning after how high his blood alcohol level was.

After Merlin passes out the knight just look at each other wondering how Merlin hasn't been executed yet with all the shit he's done. Gwaine chuckles and shakes his head "Perks of being the king's mistress"

Typical trope of the woman being better at archery than the man but the woman is Merlin and the man is Arthur (and the Knights).

It’s probably a bet or Gwaine trying to flirt with Merlin, or maybe Leon worries about his safety to the point he makes him, but one of the Knights offer to teach Merlin to shoot. They figure he’ll be safe as you normally need some distance to shoot and doesn’t require too much strength. (in the instance of Knights, they tend to not realise that a bow string is very taught and hard to pull if you want to shoot well as they are already sturdy in muscle.)

Gwaine goes to hold onto Merlin’s me show him a proper form but Merlin just scoffs and shoos him away.

Arthur finds it hilarious that Merlin is so confident as he thinks it will be funny to watch him embarrass himself, until he watched Merlin pull the bow with more ease than even the most trained archer.

Cue them watching Merlin shoot every target with as close to perfection as one can get (without controlling the wind).

Putting the bow down and blushing despite his prideful grin, Merlin just shrugs at them as if he didn’t just blow all their minds, “We had survive somehow in the village.”

Gwaine cackles with glee while Leon debates for illy picking up Arthur’s jaw.

I was literally talking about out this with a friend but can we please talk about how Merlin receives the consort treatment in the castle. Like Merlin has never been treated like just a manservant.

LIKE the scene with where Leon walks in on them look for a ghost and Merlin goes with “I’m teaching him poetry” bro no one believes that. THE DELETED SCENE where Arthur gives Merlin his mother’s sigil.

But specifically does Arthur realize how this is come into play diplomaticly?? Like kings and queens wouldn’t bother going through Gwen if she doesn’t seem like she has the kings favour. Like they would play nice becuase she’s the queen but it looks like she doesn’t have as much sway over Arthur. They would go through Merlin because he does. Does Arthur realize how he’s inadvertently oppressing the amount of power that Gwen is supposed to have. I know Merlin would not realize what’s going on, Arthur certainly wouldn’t. Does Leon know?? DOES GWEN???

Oh god it gets worse the more I think about it. Its gets worse when you think about how close Merlin would be perceived to be to the round table knights of Camelot.

merthur marriage of convenience. arthur is complaining that his council is on his ass about marrying and siring an heir and they keep trying to arrange marriages but arthur doesn't fucking want any of them. merlin knows that arthur would like to marry someone he loves but he also knows that arthur has shown no interest in like anyone except when he was enchanted so like...who tf is he gonna marry? he needs to marry someone to get the council off his ass so he's just like "why not marry a friend? ik it wouldn't be a marriage of love but at least you'd have some control and choice in this." and arthur is like "hm. but who tho?"

anyways they make a list of everyone they know who can bear children (bc arthur will need an heir eventually). then they narrow it down, crossing off names like gwen bc she is happily married to lancelot and in a loving relationship with morgana (she has two hands and i love morgwencelot) and morgana (she's literally arthur's sister but they were just putting every name they could think of down first) and elyan (he may be able to bear children but they know he wouldn't be happy going through it bc of medieval dysphoria). eventually it's down to two names, mithian and merlin and arthur looks at merlin's name then up at him and is like "you're literally a trained physician so you should know this but you were literally born a man...how tf are you gonna bear children?" and my beloved genderfluid magic incarnate emrys just shifts her form to female and is like "don't be an idiot. anyways, mithian or me?"

dumb idiot whipped and in love arthur is like "you" and dumb idiot whipped and in love merlin is like "bet". anyways they marry but they're very insistent it's just as friends. lol they have to consummate the marriage the losers. they insist they did that as friends too. the entire round table has way too much fun with this. anyways they remain married "as friends" as they slowly morph into a very loving and touchy relationship "as friends" until they're like casually kissing as greetings and farewells and have that moment of "oh shit we're like actually married and in love" bc they're stupid dumb idiots.

anyways they unite albion and are recognized as high king arthur and high queen merlin and finally have an heir - the high prince/princess whatever you prefer. uhhhh anyways merthur happy ending bc i'm a sucker for it.
