Solstice Thoughts for the Darkest Day

The deepest and most poignant practice that I have developed over the years with which I have honored the Winter Solstice is simply to hold the light.

Today is a perfect day to be kind to someone who is so lost in their own shit that they have forgotten how to be kind to themselves. Today is a day to light a candle or some other fire and to help carry the Sun through its death and inevitable rebirth. Today is a day to take out the food you preserved at the height of summer and enjoy it with the reminder that the bountiful times will come again.

Happy Winter Solstice. Happy Turn of the Wheel.

Thursday, December 21st 2023 Sun in Sagittarius ♐️🔥and Capricorn ♑️🌎 Moon in Aries ♈️🔥and Taurus ♉️🌎

Happy Winter Solstice day (for most of my audience). Summer Solstice for those in the southern hemisphere. Either way, it’s a cardinal point in the sky signifying new action. The days begin to get longer for us here on the northern side and with the sun entering the sign of Capricorn, it gives us more opportunity to evaluate how we feel safe and secure. Most begin to reevaluate the career oriented points in their lives.

We’re also reaching the midpoint of Mercury retrograde today. Yep, we’re half way there guys but that also means that the Sun entering Capricorn and Mercury dancing backwards into Sagittarius again, are gonna “bump into each other” then head in different directions. It may feel extra retrogrady.

The most significant of the transits continues to be the opposition between Venus in Scorpio and Uranus in Taurus though, which may have you feeling like the straw that broke the camel’s back in whatever you’re dealing with. While our brains are doing so much introspection and overthinking (thanks Mercury) this transit doesn’t have to be negative. It can bring in as many good surprises into your life as not so good ones. Uranus is also retrograde (which softens the blow) and in a Venus sign in Taurus makes this more of a friendly debate between these two. Shift the perspective of whatever comes your way and see how it can benefit you in the long run.

No matter how you’re experiencing these energies, we’re wrapping up the year by evaluating the dynamic of our relationships and management of our finances in some way, shape or form. these are written predominantly for the *rising* signs but they are also intuitively "channeled" enough that they should work for any dominant energy you have! (try your sun if you don't know rising, or more advanced readers can try moon, anywhere you have a stellium, etc and see what works best for you!)

aries: mercury kicks off the week by going direct in fellow fire sign sagittarius. this is a huge release of energy even with your ruling planet mars still retrograde, also in a fire sign. don't rush into anything too brazenly; mercury hasn't quite regained his feet and it'll do you good to think it out first.

taurus: at the beginning of the week mercury goes direct, making your daily routines likely run much more smoothly, and at the end of the week is the beginning of capricorn season. that's great for expanding your mind, planning a long voyage, or any academic pursuits that interest you.

gemini: with mercury direct, your relationship bumps and hiccups smooth out and calm down. maybe not today, but probably by the end of the week you feel the relief.

cancerians: routines that have been thrown off can get a fresh start this week as mercury ends his retrograde and regains footing in the normal, direct part of his orbital cycle. for many of you, fatigue will also lift around now. and fortunately the sun into capricorn also shines a warm light on your relationship matters.

leo: mercury going direct this week is the biggest news for pretty much all the fire signs (and mutable signs!). for you it's in your 5th house, which brings new levity to romances, creativity, and fun, not to mention a likely increase in all forms of fertility, metaphorical or not.

virgo: whether you're a more mercurial or more cerean virgo, this week involves shifts and changes as well as probably unforeseen delays. you have a natural fluidity that helps you glide through this peacefully, but your sign is also stereotypically known for a bit of neuroticism. take deep breaths and do whatever other regulating behaviors help you out, and proceed with all the poise you've been gifted with.

libra: an airy trine of the benefics this week is your primary focus, yes EVEN with mercury ending a retrograde, and especially if you have planets or important points at the very middle degrees of libra. this is a lucky and beautiful aspect and in particular graces your 5th and 9th houses, so you might, just for some examples, meet a love interest from far away or through a university, or you might have a spiritually enlightening experience by doing art, or so on.

scorpio: don't go crazy financially, but any tight spots when it comes to money start to loosen up from today throughout the week as mercury settles into prograde motion again. your private/public life axis is still not really settled thanks to mars retrograde's interactions with ceres but you don't have to miserly, just a sane amount of frugality will do.

sagittarius: prograde motion begins again for mercury in your sign, and you're finally free of the constant monitoring of his tricksy antics. as the week goes on you'll find brain fog lifting and your eloquence returning to full power.

capricorn: if "who cares about mercury retrograde" has at all crossed your mind in recent weeks, this week is nice because that period ends *and* capricorn season begins this week, marked by the solstice. it may seem like more frivolity than you normally allow for, but go ahead and celebrate yourself as much as you like.

aquarius: friendships that seemed to have veered off course now course correct and the connections that really matter have turned out to be lasting. meanwhile a benefic trine between jupiter and venus in your sign brings you some good luck, especially if you intentionally spend some time doing things that make you happy.

pisces: your public-facing life may have done some backpedaling recently but with mercury retrograde ending, most of this turns out either to have been an illusion, or to have ultimately been a delay in your favor. sometimes we are being divinely protected from moving too quickly. the truth of such things now starts to come to light.

Intuitive Astrology Forecast December 2024

As we move through the final month of 2024, our hearts may be in a reflective mode thanks to Mercury and Mars being retrograde in unison. We may feel the busy pace of the season too exhausting this year and find ourselves seeking comfort in a slower and more relaxed end to 2024.

Mercury and Mars retrograde together can create a general sense of sluggishness, lack of motivation, and a feeling of climbing uphill. With this cosmic energy at play, we would be wise to take it easy, not take on too much, and prioritize self-care. December can be a stressful month for many with holiday travel and family plans, but if you needed any excuse to keep it low key this year, these two retrogrades are a good one!

While we do have Mercury and Mars both slowing down our cosmic airways, we also have this theme presenting of wrapping up the past. Issues that we have been dealing with for the last 6 months may begin to settle or resolve. We may start to realize the bigger picture or begin to see new truths. This will especially kick into gear as Neptune stations direct on December 7.

December is also a special month as we are gifted with a Black Moon. This occurs when we have two New Moons in the same calendar month. December 2024 opens with a Sagittarius New Moon on the 1st and ends with a Capricorn New Moon on the 30th.

New Moons represent new beginnings and the start of a new cycle, so it seems we will be welcoming something new in the month of December. We may feel a burst of inspiration or fresh energy flowing our way, or we may decide to plant some new seeds for the months ahead.

Sagittarius is an adventurous sign, whereas Capricorn is ambitious, so we have some adventurous ambition on our side when it comes to creating new goals and laying new paths. Use this energy to your advantage by setting intentions on each of these New Moons, and watch how those seedlings sprout as we move into 2025!

December also brings the Solstice, a powerful day for our life-giving Sun. On this day, we celebrate the light. Whether experiencing the darkest or the lightest day, we are reminded that life always flows in cycles.

As we wrap up the year, perhaps it is worthwhile to honor the cycle you have journeyed. Even if you are not happy with where you have landed or if 2024 has brought some incredible struggles, this, too, is just part of the whole. Allow the cycles of our sun, moon, and stars to be a reminder that nothing stays the same for long and eventually, just like our Sun, we will enter a new phase of being.

November 30/December 1- Sagittarius New Moon

We welcome our month with a new lunar cycle, a reminder that it is never too late to begin again. The adventurous and playful energies of Sagittarius will help us to make our mark. Represented by the arrow of the archer, Sagittarius reminds us that when we put our mind to something, when we take aim, there is nothing we cannot achieve. Plant some ambitious seeds under this New Moon, allow the prospect of these seeds to fill you with wonder and awe. Think big! And then watch how these seeds take hold in the new year. This New Moon also falls directly opposite the planet of optimism, Jupiter, so wherever you have found yourself at this point in your life journey, look for the silver lining – you will most certainly see it!

December 2-4: Antares Stargate Portal

Antares is known as one of the four Royal stars and during this time period, the Sun conjuncts with Antares, activating its energy and beaming it straight into our beings. Antares is known as the heart of the Scorpion, and this energy can open our own hearts. We may be feeling more abundant and creative. We may be feeling more compassionate and supportive towards ourselves and loved ones. In some cultures, Antares is considered the resting place for souls after they depart their bodies and make their way to the afterlife. It is under the energy of Antares that they can weigh up their regrets, triumphs, and memories. We don’t have to wait till we are on our way to the afterlife to do this. Take some time under this Star portal to reflect on the course of your life. Is there someone you need to forgive? Is there someone you need to call? How can you use this energy to bring yourself into a state of peace with all that has unfolded?

December 4- Retrograde Mercury Opposite Jupiter

Mercury has been retrograde since November 25, and now it aligns directly opposite Jupiter. Jupiter can expand whatever it touches, and as Mercury Retrograde is linked to miscommunications and delays, we may be experiencing our fair share of these today! Mercury Retrograde however, is also a highly intuitive time, so we may find our intuition peaking. Trust your instincts, especially when it comes to the timing of your life.

December 4- Sun Square Saturn

A potentially challenging day where you may feel tested, prodded, and pulled! Pay attention to what is happening around this time, as it will serve as a guide for where you need to set your boundaries and manage your time and energy levels throughout the month.

December 5- Sun Conjunct Mercury Retrograde

This is a power day in the Mercury Retrograde cycle! Known as Mercury Cazimi this is when we start to see a turning point in whatever miscommunications or inner wisdom Mercury Retrograde is trying to bring to the surface. It is at this point that we may start seeing things with clarity. Just be patient however, and give things time to reveal themselves. Don’t rush ahead and be extra mindful of your personal belongings- Mercury Retrograde can sometimes turn us into scatterbrains!

December 6- Mars Retrograde

It’s one of the most critical cosmic events of the year! Mars Retrogrades the least out of all the planets, so it is definitely one of the most consequential retrograde cycles we can experience. Mars Retrograde helps us to redefine how we are choosing to spend our energy. It can adjust what motivates us and help us to reorganize and reprioritize what we choose to give importance to. Mars Retrograde can create a sluggishness when it comes to our motivation and feelings of energy, but this is all part of the re-harmonization process. Mars will begin its retrograde in Leo before making its way back into Cancer. Both of these zodiacs are very heart-led, so we may find our focus on matters of the heart. Mars Retrograde through Leo will focus on self-love and our authenticity, whereas Mars Retrograde in Cancer will turn our attention to our home and family lives. December 6/7- Venus Conjunct Pluto

Venus moves into Aquarius where it will align with Pluto. This planetary duo can bring up power struggles in our relationships, but can also boost the intensity. If you want to get your way, focus on your feminine powers.

December 7- Sun Opposite Jupiter

The Sun moves directly opposite Jupiter, the planet ancient astrologers considered the lucky planet! Lucky rays may shine upon us, but in the words of Deepak Chopra- “luck is simply opportunity meeting preparedness.”

December 7- Neptune Direct

Neptune ends its retrograde, bringing clarity and new insights our way. Neptune Retrograde can open our third eye and help us to access portals of higher dimension with greater ease. Now that it is stationing direct, we are guided to work with the transmissions we have already acquired. Chances are, some new information may have come to light, or perhaps we are now able to see the world or a situation in a different way. This is a day to honor our authentic selves and to trust our intuition.

December 12- Venus Opposite Retrograde Mars and 12:12

The two cosmic lovers rest on opposite ends of the zodiac. It is time for them to go their own separate ways before returning together again. How can you use this symbolism in your own life? Venus and Mars on opposite ends of the zodiac wheel can help us to balance our masculine and feminine. We may find that the feminine presence of Venus helps us to slow down and savor what we have achieved instead of reaching for more.

It is also the 12th day of the 12th month, giving us the number code 1212. 12 is a powerful number of completion. Sometimes it is only at the end that we are able to understand the whole and to see the bigger picture vision. Hold space for these ideas on this day.

December 15- Gemini Full Moon and Mercury Direct

It’s the last Full Moon of 2024 and it falls in the sign of the Gemini twins. The story goes that one twin was mortal, the other immortal, and together, they create the balance of what it means to be human. We are both a soul and a body and during our time in this earthly realm, it is our job to honor both sides of the equation. The Gemini Full Moon also represents a powerful point of completion and endings. If there are things you want to do away with and not bring into 2025, this is the perfect time to set those intentions.

Mercury also stations direct on this day, allowing our minds to move into a new clarity. Pay attention to what messages come your way at this time, as they are likely divinely inspired.

December 18- Sun Square Neptune

Neptune has just stationed direct and is now coming into a tense alignment with our Sun. Any lessons or gifts that the retrograde was supposed to deliver will be brought to the surface now. Trust your intuition and stand up for yourself if something feels amiss. Be mindful not to move through the day with rose-colored glasses. Don’t give the benefit of the doubt unless they truly deserve it.

December 19- Venus Trine Jupiter

A beautiful planetary duo! This harmonious combination of planetary energy will shed good fortune on this day! This is a great day for creative projects, socializing, and shining bright! Make use of this day by doing something you love.

December 21- Winter Solstice/ Sun enters Capricorn

Welcome to Capricorn Season and the Solstice! Here, we celebrate either the longest or shortest day of the year. But, no matter where we are on our great cosmic cycle, we won’t stay here for long! Things are always moving and shifting, and nature is a great reminder of that. Capricorn Season is a time to honor our innate gifts and to celebrate ourselves for all that we are. It is an ambitious sign that can give us the stamina to make it through the holidays and into another year!

December 27- Venus Square Uranus

Venus square Uranus can be a potentially volatile combination. Perhaps use this as an excuse to have a low-key day where you are able to focus on the things that you really wish to do. Instead of saying yes or trying to please others, please yourself!

December 29- Chiron Direct

Chiron ends the year with a power move! Chiron stationing direct represents a new turning point when it comes to finding peace. We all have wounds, and Chiron gifts us with remembering that our wounds can lead to beautiful openings and a deeper authenticity. As it emerges from retrograde, we too, can emerge from some painful wounding of the past. Perhaps we can create space to realize that even though we are wounded, we can still lead a beautiful life.

December 30- Black New Moon in Capricorn

We end the month like we began it, with a New Moon! The second New Moon in a calendar month is known as a Black Moon. This is perfectly timed with the start of the new year and is a great way to set intentions for the new chapter ahead. Capricorn is a very ambitious sign, so set some big goals for yourself- you may just surprise yourself on what you can achieve!

Card for this week: 5 of Pentacles (reversed) - a callback to August 2024 (also mentioned below!), as this was a weekly card back then. notably: it's reversed this time. in the upright position, this card tends to deal with loss/isolation/lack mindset and in reverse, there's a sense of recovery from these things. any ailments carried over from august or recent burdens taking up mental/spiritual space are to be released this week. be free! regain your confidence! the difficult times are ending.

Transits/Astro forecast: right off the winter solstice and just before the new year/capricorn new moon, we find ourselves reflecting. capricorn is in full swing and it's time to plan! some lingering mercury retrograde shadow energies might be hanging around, but I'd say we're more prominently in the mars retrograde drama at the moment. ideally, this slow-down mixed with capricorn season and the holidays will allow for some inner restructuring time. utilitarian lens to your vision board. what can stay and what must go? you are much more capable than your subconscious programming would make you believe. current retrogrades are mars, jupiter, and uranus.

monday 12/23 - sun square lunar nodes - the halfway point between eclipse seasons, fresh off the winter solstice, holiday season imminent, sunset time incrementally later each day... everything is coalescing into a reflection period. you're at the intersection of Where you used to be and Where you want to go. challenges may emerge today relating to your sense of self/life purpose, perhaps encouraging you to take things in a new direction!

tuesday 12/24 - jupiter rx square saturn - the evergreen battle between expansion and restriction. building off of yesterday's energy, this transit is also an opportunity for recognizing growth, hard work, general path/work ethic, commitment to your areas of focus, so on. this transit comes in cycles- we had it 3 times between august 2015-may 2016 and now, we'll have it 3 times between august 2024-june 2025. the first of this cycle happened on august 19th 2024 during that week of absolute retrograde chaos (5 of pentacles week!), so anticipate some of those themes reappearing.... bonus points if they relate to something going on in your life from 2015-16! this second occurrence feels much less afflicted than august's. vibe is very Reap What You Sow and if you have been remaining on course, it'll be a beautiful day of recognition!

thursday 12/26 - mercury opposite jupiter rx, mercury square saturn - both transits we've had in the last few weeks, so not particularly new energy here. the chaos blends. resist any urges to be self critical or hold yourself back today! you could be tempted to let the inner critic speak for you but that guy doesn't know a darn thing. the world may be harsh, but you don't have to be. remember to pick your head up and recognize what is working well!

friday 12/27 - venus square uranus rx - another (early) august throwback transit! relationships and partnerships in your life are demanding freedom and experimentation. the way you've always done things is wearing you down and shakeups are imminent. allow yourself to respect your individual needs and the partnerships that support these needs will thrive!

sunday 12/29 - chiron rx ends - since late July, we've been reflecting/remembering/reminiscing on some of our deepest and oldest wounds. chiron retrograde is a time to slow down and re-assess what may still be hurting us right under the surface, and with chiron retrograde ending, we're wrapping that for now. looking back is important, but for now we're moving forward with the healing journey!
