Tips for Finding the Perfect Venue for High Tea in Keilor
High tea is often considered a tradition that must be experienced at least once in a person’s life and when you select the perfect location hidden away, overlooking stunning hills and breathtaking landscapes, the experience is unlike any other.
Tumblr media
Imagine stepping into a scene that is reminiscent of a period drama, where every detail is charming and sophisticated. The aroma of freshly brewed Earl Grey tea making its way through the air and the sight of perfectly arranged finger sandwiches and delicious pastries is a sensory explosion that transports you to a different time.
But high tea in Keilor is so much more than just an ordinary culinary experience; it’s a celebration of history, nature, and the art of luxury living. As you take your first steps into this unforgettable atmosphere, you should let yourself be taken away by the rich experiences that await you.
Many factors add to your high tea experience. Here are a few ways to make sure that your high tea experience is one to remember.
Tip 1: Look for an air of historic charm
When it comes to high tea in Keilor, the venue’s atmosphere is something that you must consider before committing to any plans. Embrace the region’s rich history by selecting a location that’s known for its old-world charm. Imagine sipping a fragrant cup of hot tea surrounded by elegant Victorian decor or within the cosy confines of a beautifully preserved setting. The historic backdrop will transport you to a different time, setting the stage for a memorable experience that you’ll remember for years to come.
Tip 2: Don’t overlook stunning views
Keilor’s natural beauty is an integral part of what makes it an appealing high tea option, and what better way to appreciate it than by taking part in an afternoon of high tea while immersing yourself in breathtaking views? Look for venues that offer breathtaking views of the hills, lush gardens, or tranquil waterways that only add to this region’s landscape. Don’t forget to make sure that the scenery is the perfect complement to your afternoon — whether it’s an outing with friends, family, or colleagues.
Tumblr media
Tip 3: Go for the perfect backdrop
For an authentic high tea in Keilor, many venue options offer a luxurious backdrop such as a stunning castle. These intimate spaces often provide impeccable tea rooms, gardens, or lounges, where unmatched service and attention to detail are important. Expect beautifully curated menus, fine china, and an atmosphere that speaks to the sophistication and refinement you’re searching for, creating the perfect backdrop for an afternoon out with loved ones.
Tip 4: Seek out private dining experiences
If you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply want an extra touch of exclusivity, explore venues that offer private dining experiences for high tea in Keilor. Imagine having an entire room or secluded space all to yourselves, where you can savour each decadent treat in an intimate setting. These personalised experiences often come with attentive service and the ability to customise the menu to your preferences, ensuring a truly memorable afternoon.
Tip 5: High tea with a tour
Imagine taking a casual stroll through historic spaces decorated with tapestries or walking down immaculately manicured gardens. A castle setting adds an extra layer of sophistication to your high tea afternoon, allowing you to step into a world of timeless charm. Before booking, call ahead and ask about the possibility of including a castle tour as part of your high tea experience. It’s a chance to dive into the castle’s rich heritage, learn fascinating anecdotes, and experience architectural marvels, all while indulging in an afternoon of high tea. Make your day truly unforgettable by combining the elegance of high tea with a tour of a historical castle.
Tumblr media
Tip 6: Customize to your taste
Before finalising your high tea plans, take a moment to ask about the venue’s ability to accommodate your dietary preferences. Whether you’re vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have specific allergies, it’s important to make sure that your high tea experience is tailored to your unique needs. Many venues are happy to customise their menus or provide alternative options to cater to diverse dietary requirements. Communicate your preferences in advance if you want to enjoy your high tea without any concerns, knowing that every dish is created with careful consideration to suit your taste and dietary needs. After all, a truly memorable high tea experience is one where every detail is personalised to perfection.
A lasting memory of high tea in Keilor
Whether you’re looking for historic charm, stunning gardens, elegant castle backdrops, private dining experiences, or themed indulgences, Keilor offers a wealth of venues to satisfy your craving for the perfect high tea experience.
As you sip your fragrant brew and savour each delectable treat, allow the ambiance to surround you, creating lasting memories that will linger long after you’ve left your high tea experience. Embrace the timeless tradition of high tea, and let its charm and elegance sweep you away.

Lord Have Mercy
Did you hear the one that someone other than me was in the audience?
That I paid said person to update me and take photos/ vids 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
BB™️ - from that great 🇦🇺 movie The Castle an appropriate quote - “Tell em they’re dreaming”
It was real. It was fucking fabulous.
It’s that Mastercard ad - what is priceless - being able to 🥊 all the bullshit away one fact at a time.
Edit The organisers told the audience that due to David Berry🦠 diagnosis there would be no hugging. 🤛🏻 pumps please. Sam put his arm around every fan, without prompting. Extremely generous as they are in front of an audience in Melbourne now and then heading off on planes.

It was, for once, a nice day in Melbourne. In all honesty, it could have been worse for October with it just coming out of winter. It was starting to warm back up, and today was the first sunny day of the season. What better way to spend the day than at the beach while your boyfriend had a gap week before his next race?
“Come on Oscar!” You shouted, taking off to find the ‘perfect spot’ where there weren’t too many people but still close enough to the water.
“We’re gonna be here all day,” He chuckled, grabbing the chairs and cooler from the back of his car. He looked up, trying to find you, but you had already disappeared. “Just leave me to carry everything, why don’t ya.”
“I didn’t leave you,” You said, coming up behind him from the other side of the car to grab a chair and a bucket. You moved them both into one arm, so you could hold Oscar’s hand as you both walked down to the sand. “I’m not that mean.”
“I wouldn’t put it past you,” he teased as he pulled you over to a vacant area. He decided to continue the joke, “Does this meet your impossible standards?”
“I don't know,” you dragged out, inspecting the sand. “I don't think this ratio of water to sand is good enough for my sand castles.”
“If I take the bucket and get you water, will it be sufficient?” He asked, trying not to break but failing miserably as his face broke into a huge smile.
“You will be my honorary water boy?” You perked up, accidentally dropping the chair and bucket in the process.
“Can I be like your knight or something since I’m helping with the castle?” He tried to push as he set the cooler and other chair down, so he could wrap his arms around your waist and pull you into his chest.
“You’ve got a deal, my knight in orange armor,” You patted his chest as you took off toward the water
“Hey, you said you liked these swim trunks!” He retorted, running after you.
“They make you look like a fucking highlighter from the waist down, baby!”

January 26th marks Australia Day.
Scots played many key parts in the story of Australia, we were convicts, soldiers and governors; orphans, free settlers and gold hunters; bushrangers, merchants and immigrants.
Although it is sometimes said of nineteenth-century Sydney that it was an English city, in contrast with the more Scottish city of Melbourne, people of Scottish origin have played important roles in the development and life of Sydney. They have been there from the very beginning.
For hundreds of years Scots have packed up their families and their belongings and sailed to Australia to start a new life.
When Australia needed workers between 1832 and 1850 about 16,000 Scots became ‘assisted immigrants’. They boarded chartered ships, like the 50-ton ship Stirling Castle, chartered from Alan Kerr and Company, Greenock, alongside skilled stonemasons, engineers, carpenters, blacksmiths and even professors. In the same period more than 20,000 Scots travelled to Australia as unassisted immigrants.
The majority of Scottish emigrants were from the Lowlands but around 10,000 Highlanders boarded chartered ships to Australia between 1837 and 1852.
The 20th century continued to see Scots migrate to Australia. In the 1920s Scots stonemasons helped to build the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Scots miners from Lanarkshire, Fife and Ayrshire worked in coal mines in New South Wales in the '20s and '30s. In 1929 Alexander MacRae, originally from Loch Kishorn in the Highlands, first produced the famous Australian swimming ‘cossie’ - Speedos.
In 1930 MacRobertson Chocolates created Freddo Frog. Macpherson Robertson, the founder of ‘Mac Robertson Steam Confectionery Works’ that later became simply MacRobertson Chocolates, was the son of a Scottish carpenter. He spent many of his early years in Leith and became an apprentice at a confectionery company. When his family moved back to Melbourne he started making sweets in his mother’s bathroom.
Robertson became a great philanthropist as well as a hugely successful chocolate maker. He sponsored the MacRobertson Air Race from London to Melbourne, and financed a combined British, Australian and New Zealand expedition to the Antarctic. A part of the Antarctic was named ‘Mac Robertson Land’ in his honour.
Today Freddo Frog is the most popular children’s chocolate in Australia.
After the Second World War thousands of Britons set sail for Australia. Between 1947 and 1981 more than a million Britons took advantage of an assisted passage scheme introduced by the Australian Government. Around 170,000 Scots left the country of their birth to become ‘Ten Pound Poms’ and start a new life Down Under.
During the past 24 hours there have been protests in Australia as part of a campaign to move Australia day to a date more fitting to the indigenous people of the country, names they give to January 26th include Survival Day, Invasion Day, Day of Mourning.
Gammeya Dharawal man, Jacob Morris, said there isn’t one emotion that fully captures the day.
"It's a day of teaching. It's a day of celebrating as well. We're not up there celebrating the Union Jack, we're celebrating us," he says.
But the day also reminds Jacob of the treatment of First Nations people throughout history.
"Anger … that is still what is felt today and that comes from the sadness, trauma and the hurt," he said.

REPUTATION EASTER EGGS
Here is my master list post of all the easter eggs I believe have been left for Reputation (Taylor's Version). If I've missed any please let me know!!! Happy Rep TV clowning!🐍🤡
112 THEORY
Via this theory, Reputation (Taylor's Version) is rumoured to be releasing on the 16th of February 2024 in Melbourne Australia on the first night of the Australian leg.
The announcement is rumoured to be 26th of November 2023 in Sao Paolo Brazil, on the final night of the Eras Tour 2023.
Now onto DATE MATH!
11/26/23 is the rumoured announcement date.
SO let's break down this date!
1+1+2+6+2+3=15.
1+5=6.
rep is the sixth album.
reputation TV would be her 15th album including re-recordings
Now let's look at the rumoured release date for Reputation (Taylor's version)....
It's rumoured and guessed to be releasing on February 16th 2024. 02/16/24.
Let's break that date down too...
0+2+1+6+2+4=15.
1+5=6.
MIC DROP!
National Cake Day!
11/26 is national Cake Day.
In the Bejeweled Music video Taylor is dressed as Marie Antoinette, who famously said 'let them eat cake.
And she gave a STRONG wink during that scene.
On Sao Paolo N1, Taylor VERY deliberately looked over her shoulder and winked at the crowd, right into the camera. It feels like too much of a coincidence with little miss nothing is ever accidental.
Taylor repeated this on N2, and stuck her tongue out.
There is also the cake in the I Bet You Think About Me Music video.
The numbers on the top of the cake are: 13, 26 and 2. 13x2 is 26, which seems to be an easter egg for 26/11! As well as the obvious 2's hinting towards the second month of February!! She also pulls her hand through the cake and creates two equal lines....a sideways 11?
Tumblr media
Black Friday
11/26 falls on the weekend after Black Friday. Reputation's colour is Black, and Reputation being announced 2 days after Black Friday seems a small nod to her blacking out her socials and 3 days later posting a Reputation teaser...
And perhaps 2 because of...well February!
BEJEWELED MUSIC VIDEO
Danielle Haim
Taylor's casting of the Bejeweled music video interested me! She cast her friends the Haim sisters to play her wicked step-sister in the first scene, which is FILLED with easter eggs.
Particularly important to me is Danielle Haim.
Danielle was born on the 16th February 1989.
Yes. 02/16. The same date as Reputation (Taylor's version rumoured release. Now just remember this date. It becomes important later!!!
She was also 33 when the music video was both filmed and released. 33. 3+3=6..6 means Reputation
Danielle says "bye snake" as they leave Taylor. She is the first person to mention Taylor being a snake in this video
I do believe Taylor wouldn't miss the chance to use her friends as easter eggs when possible!!!
Danielle also flicks her fan 6 times during that scene. Credit to @kush07_ on Twitter for this fan one!
Laura Dern
Laura Dern interestingly is another February birthday (02/10/67) within that casting. Exceptionally interesting to have 2 people born in the second month present during a scene filled with 2's with outright easter eggs to Reputation...hmmm
Kingdom Keys
The wording of 'keys to your own castle' during the discussion of what the girls will get if they marry the prince is particularly interesting to me. It is VERY strongly reminiscent of 'I don't like your kingdom keys, they once belonged to me' from LWYMMD.
Twos
There are two candles burning to the side of Laura as she talks to Taylor. Also two lights above the sisters. There's a lot of 2's / doubles imagery in this music video.
Tumblr media
There are two candles next to where the Haim sisters and Laura exit the room.
Tumblr media
Danielle our Feb 16th hint is also the second person to say goodbye to Taylor. Another 2.
Alana then calls Taylor 'snakey'. This is the second time a snake reference is said, and it is the last. Another 2 of course...
In the scene with Dita Von Teese there is 2 of everything.
Tumblr media
In the final scene of the video there are two torches on either side of Taylor. Just another 2. Just for funsies.
Tumblr media
Exile ends 02
Taylor then receives the oyster shell stopwatch which declares "exile ends at 02". Now going back to Alana and Danielle's comments...exile ends for this SNAKE at 02. FEBRUARY.
Tumblr media
Outfits
The next scene shows Taylor in a hooded black outfit. This is very strong imagery of the reputation stadium tour beginning outfit she wore.
Tumblr media
In the scene where jewels begin flying to her, there is a scene alone of just her boots when she is walking. This really reminded me of the beginning of the reputation section of the eras tour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Full Moon
When we see the outside of the building of which the elevator is in, there is a full moon. 11/26 is a full moon. SNTV was announced on a full moon, 1989TV was the day before a full moon....
Tumblr media
Dita Von Teese scene
In the scene with Dita Von Teese, Taylor is dripping in diamonds. Very reminiscent of LWYMMD bathtub scene.
Tumblr media
Theres two chandeliers present during this scene. This just struck the idea of the lyric 'bass beat rattling the chandelier' from This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things.
Ghosted
Taylor refuses Jack's proposal. The text says...she ghosted.
Tumblr media
When did Taylor ghost on us? Rep era! she wasn't seen, she was like a ghost!
Marie Antoniette
Taylor is dressed like Marie Antoinette in the scene where she receives the keys. Marie famously said 'let them eat cake'. National Cake Day is 11/26. This also lines up with the I Bet You Think About Me Cake theory!
Tumblr media
Castle Crumbling
The final scene has her stood in a crumbling castle at night. Her castle crumbling overnight...hello Call It What You Want To! There is also a full moon...
Tumblr media
KARMA MV
Devil Scene
The scene that we link to Reputation is the second scene featuring Taylor. She's dressed in all black and has a mask of the devil.
This scene starts at 20 seconds. She waves at 26 seconds.... perhaps an easter egg for the era beginning in the 2nd month and for the album saying' hello' aka an announcement on the 26th!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She's surrounded by 13 dancers at this point, the presence of a 13 normally is alerting us it is an easter egg.
The belt on her dress is very similar to a necklace she held up during the LWYMMD behind the scenes walkthroughs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ice Spice
Ice Spice is featured in both the song and of course the video. Her birthday is 1/1. New Years Day. And well...Taylor loves to use a birthday as an easter egg...
Island
The scene where Taylor is laying as an island has linked her to Te-Fiti, and the codename for Karma was 'Volcano'. However in Sao Paolo, there is an island called 'Snake Island'. And the outline of this island looks VERY similar to how Taylor looks as an island!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Coffee Cup
Obviously we have the most obvious one we all know and love. The Midnights coffee cup being a blue nail at 8 & a black nail at 2. 1989TV was announced in August, meaning the nails definitely meant something.
Now the black nail being at 2 could mean released in February or announced then, but I'm leaning heavily towards releasing!
The coffee cup has the hands of the clock between 11:56, indicating it is becoming close to midnight.
Midnight = 12. December is the 12th month, but she's indicating something coming BEFORE MIDNIGHT. 4 minutes in fact before midnight. Indicating reputation is coming 4 days before December. Aka November 26th!
Tumblr media
I CAN SEE YOU MV
The only real easter egg I could find within this music video for Reputation was the use of a Getaway Car and the dark outfits.
You Are In Love Lyric Video
In the sand of this video are the letters R E P...hello reputation!
The Eras Tour
At one night of the Eras Tour, Taylor said the crowd were jumping like kangaroos. With Reputation TV rumoured to release February 16th in Melbourne, Australia, I am counting this as an easter egg for SURE.
VMAS
Hello. The Outfit. That's Reputation!
The Ring Taylor wore (and broke) is very very similar to the necklace pendant Laura Dern wears in Bejeweled. Telling us to look at Laura, who is a February birthday.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During her acceptance speech, Taylor used the words 'slithering around genres' to describe her musical journey. Well that reputation if I've ever seen her!
PREVIOUS ANNOUNCEMENTS
Taylor announced Speak Now with Sparks Fly. Track 2.
She announced 1989 TV with New Romantics. Track 16.
2/16...how interesting!
RIO
The choice of playing ME! as her first acoustic song ON N3 was VERY interesting to me. Her first released song that she owned. Interestingly it came out on the 26th of April 2016. Yup a 26! The music video also begins with a snake, and signified the end of the rep era, so I do think it was used as a Rep Easter egg, especially when paired with So It Goes....
It was interesting she paired a track 16 with a track 7. 16 is her rumoured rep release day and 7 is her rumoured debut release day.
Post Rio the only remaining Reputation song left for surprise songs is 'I Did Something Bad'. It appears Taylor is doing what she did with 1989 and will announce after finishing the entire album!
SAO PAOLO
They used a new reputation era photo from the Taylor Insta photoshoot for a welcome banner in transit areas. After scouring the internet and my swiftie sources I couldn't find it anywhere, so I am presuming this high quality image was provided to Sao Paolo to use from Taylor's team... a rep era picture..hmmm
In TaylorNations post from pre Sao Paolo N1, they say they are 'wonderstruck'. This is from the song Enchanted. Enchanted has a run time of 5.53. 5+5+3= 13. Funny them using a 13 song to talk about Sao Paolo...seems important right!
In Sao Paolo there is an island called Snake Island. I think this is important as mentioned in the Karma MV section.
There are 6 shows in Brazil. 6 again that's REP CODED!
N3 will be her 13th international date. It will also be her 66th show overall.
N1
Taylor's opener Sabrina Carpenter came out in an outfit very reminiscent of Taylor's rainbow dress from the Reputation Stadium Tour. Taylor's openers have been in on announcements in the past, Haim knew about 1989TVs release!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Taylor looked over her shoulder and winked right into the camera. This is very similar to the wink she did in Bejeweled whilst dressed as Marie Antoniette!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For surprise songs on Sao Paolo N1 Taylor sang Now That We Don't Talk for the first time. This song has a run time of 2:26. Taylor is insane enough to do this....2=February. 26= Announcement date,.
She also played Innocent. Innocent is track 11 on Speak Now. So by using Now That We Don't Talk and Innocent she easter egged both the numbers 2, 26 and 11. February and the 26th of November!!!!
Innocent is also sampled in LWYMMD. It is also about the same person. Innocent was also first played on 12/09/10. 1+2+0+9+1+0=13! Sao Paolo N1 was also a 13 date (11/24/23 - 1+1+2+4+2+3=13)
N2
Taylor stuck her tongue out a LOT this night. I think she knows we are clowning and is playing with us. Also...snakes do stick their tongues out constantly so...
Tumblr media
Taylor did a sideways Dolphin body roll in Midnight Rain. She doesn't normally do this. We saw her do this move during the BTS clips of Reputation being made and recorded.
SURPRISE SONGS
Surprise songs were Safe and Sound and Untouchable. An interesting pairing. As Safe and Sound technically wasn't on an album release, it's a track 0. Untouchable is a track 15.
Reputation (Taylor's Version) will be Taylor's 15th album including rerecords.
Safe and Sound was released on the 26th of December 2011.
Untouchable was released on the 26th of October 2009.
Safe and Sound is all about protection from the outside world, and Untouchable is about dreaming of something you feel you can't have. During the Reputation era/events leading to Rep's release Taylor went into hiding to protect herself from the outside world, and dreamt of the public releasing she was right about the phone-call and the Kimye situation all along, but she felt they wouldn't believe her.
There are lyrical parallels in both the surprise songs to Reputation songs. Credit to @taylorslavender and @lightupfloor on twitter for these!
Tumblr media
TRIPLE HIGH NOTE
Taylor did a triple Don't Blame Me high note on N1. The only surprise song left from rep is track 3. This triple note was done once in Rio, N3 in Atlanta, once in Tampa, Glendale once and finally Sao Paolo N1. This means she has done it 5 times. She did not sing that note in the rep set N2 in Sao Paolo. If she does it N3 she would bring the total of triple notes during tour to 6...aka rep's number!
Photographer
A black and white photographer named Damon Baker (@damon_baker) who has previously worked with Taylor, posted her on his story on 11/25 answering a question box asking 'last thing that inspired you?' answering 'my next creation'. Now with Reputation TV being rumoured to release on 11/26 and likely with a black and white photoshoot makes for an interesting situation. He also posted a story saying his next project was coming 'tomorrow' aka 11/26...
Tumblr media
Reputation Merch
In the holiday merch drop, Reputation appeared to receive the most new merch. In the VERY limited edition drops, most of the old pieces sold were Reputation Merch.
The Black Friday sale timer ends on 11/26.
Instagram
As of 11/26, Taylor's Instagram is currently aligned, and has a clear darker theme to it. We saw this when 1989TV was released that her feed became bluer.
The Surprise Song Countdown.
It is theorised Taylor is using her rerecorded albums to count down to Reputation's release using her surprise songs. TaylorNation shared a countdown video for the Black Friday Store sale
Now That We Don't Talk (4th rerecord)
Innocent (3rd rerecord)
Safe and Sound (2nd rerecord)
Untouchable (1st rerecord)
It is theorised she could do a song from Debut as this would be album 0 as the rerecord hasn't been announced yet, or perhaps Glitch. Then we think she will do I Did Something Bad and announce Reputation (Taylor's Version).
Dancer Instagram Story
One of Taylor's dancers posted this image of a snake wrapping round legs statue...what do they know!!!

video peter roe | aether "victoria & lord melbourne & albert"
“When I received the script for ‘Victoria,’ I was midway through the first season of ‘The Man in the High Castle.’ That character [in the latter] is very complex, he suddenly inhabits the darker realm and he’s the ideal version of one stereotype, one typecast, which I decided to embrace and go as deep as I could. Suddenly on my doorstep arrives this other typecast that I used to battle with—the brooding Victorian lord,” recalled Sewell in an interview with Bazaar.
“I read it and thought, ‘You know what? I am so lucky to still be considered for this kind of role,’” he continued. “When I got this script, I realized that I not only identified in some way with Melbourne, but I just really liked him, which for me is not always the case. Often the job for me is to try to shine light on something dark or to try to find nuance in something that might seem kind of one-note on paper. That was not the case with Melbourne.”
Tumblr media
“I just couldn’t get enough of him after a while. Even if in reading a whole book you only get one glimmer of something useful, A) you’ve read a wonderful book – if you’re lucky, anyway – and B) that tiny, tiny, tiny thing could be the thing that unlocks [the character] for you and brings it closer to home and makes it real for you.” visiontv. ca/masterpiece

an interview with lucy lamb — a talk about couchsurfing, australia and the afterlife
today's thorns of the future guest is lucy lamb, a rising star of modern post-crystal castles electronic music, inspired by early 2010s fashion. lucy is an artist from melbourne, australia. she describes her music as "alt, indie, electronica, dance-pop and witch house with elements of darkwave". lucy is a producer and a singer, as well as a lyricist. her first ever release was a single titled "hello", which was self-released by lamb through distrokid.
Tumblr media
thorns of the future: how did you start your journey with music?
lucy: I’ve always loved making music ever since I was a little kid. Started singing lessons when I was like 7 years old, fell in love with Miley Cyrus which was the reason I wanted to become a singer lol. Started making music when I was about 16, and released my first EP when I was 18.
thorns of the future: what are some of your favourite songs right now?
lucy: My favourite songs right now are Canary Wharf Drift by Bassvictim and Your Face by Wisp.
thorns of the future: who inspired you to make music?
lucy: Literally Miley Cyrus in the Hannah Montana tv show I was so obsessed.
Tumblr media
thorns of the future: what is your craziest experience during a live show?
lucy: I played in this club in Tokyo which was a wild experience for me. There was no stage so I was just on the danceflooor with the crowd and kind of just walking around like weaving through everybody with my microphone which I definitely wasn’t used to.
thorns of the future: what software do you use to make music?
lucy: I use Logic Pro, I’m still learning how to use it properly though.
thorns of the future: what's "the other side" about?
lucy: The Other Side is about crossing over to the after life pretty much. It talks about being scared to die and the things you would miss. It can kind of be interpreted as being about any sort of transition from one thing to another, any sort of change, but I think the obvious one (especially when watching the music video) is the transition to death. It’s just a fictional sort of story if you will.
Tumblr media
thorns of the future: are you planning any new releases?
lucy: I have 3 singles coming out in the next few months all with music videos. ‘Bed of Snow’ is coming out on September 20th and I’m so excited for it. All the songs are of course dance/electronic but I’m leaning a little bit into like indie rock elements in two of them, with the third being like a full commitment to witch house.
thorns of the future: what's a country you would never travel to?
lucy: Probably North Korea for obvious reasons.
thorns of the future: tell us about the things you enjoy most, except for making music.
lucy: I love travelling that’s my second favourite thing in the world after music. I went on a year long trip around the world in 2022 which was absolutely amazing. I went on a 5 month road-trip around Australia earlier this year too. It’s a little hard to travel like that while also doing music so I think for now I’m taking a break from travelling. I also love animals, especially weird exotic ones. The weirder they look the more I love them because it just makes me thing how weird and amazing the world is.
Tumblr media
thorns of the future: have you ever met anyone famous from the electronic scene? who was it and how was your experience with them?
lucy: I can’t say I have yet. Someone I’d LOVE to meet is the guys from Air. They’re a huge inspiration for me and one of the most talented electronic duos I know.
thorns of the future: what's the riskiest thing you've ever done?
lucy: The riskiest thing I’ve done was probably when my friend and I did couchsurfing through Europe. There’s this app called couchsurfing where you can arrange to stay at strangers’ houses for free while you’re travelling. We were pretty nervous every time we stayed with someone because there was always the question of like what’s in it for them? Why are they letting random people stay at their house for free? The people we stayed with sometimes turned out to be weird and kind of put us on edge but a lot of the time they were really cool people too so. We were literally on such a tight budget we had no other option but to do our accomodation this way.
thorns of the future: are there artists you truly hate? why?
lucy: I don’t really hate any artist in terms of the kind of music they do like I respect all genres and whatever kind of music you wanna make even if I don’t like it. Like it’s got nothing to do with me so I don’t really care enough to HATE any artist.
Tumblr media
thorns of the future: what is the best live show you've ever been to?
lucy: There’s this experimental electronic duo from Melbourne called Npcede. I played a show with them and they were really great. It was a guy singing and a guy playing bass. They both had like really amazing stage presence and interacted with the crowd so much. The lead singer started playing the electric guitar with a violin bow halfway through as well I loved it. I also have to mention seeing the band Film Noir in Berlin, they’re an indie rock band and the lead singer’s energy was so compelling it made the whole thing sooo immersive and fun.
thorns of the future: name one thing you really hate about australia.
lucy: Honestly I think Australia is a great place to live I think it’s beautiful, it’s diverse and it’s very liveable. If I had to say one thing I hated about it I guess just how far away it is from everything lol because it’s always so hard and expensive to travel anywhere.
thorns of the future: tell us about the weirdest thing that has happened to you as an artist.
lucy: The weirdest thing that’s happened to me as an artist is probably when someone randomly approached me on the street when I was in Tromso, Norway, and told me they recognise me and love my music. Was superrrr weird for me because Tromso is a pretty small town with not many people and it was just really random to meet someone who knows me there.

we would like to thank lucy lamb for answering all of our questions. we really appreciate you. that’s all for now.

A priest with a gun sets the scene in TV’s newest ‘whydunit’
Tumblr media

The story starts with a bang. A priest in his white and purple robes strides out of a country-town church with a rifle – yes, a priest with a rifle – and starts shooting parishioners, leaving five of them dead. Father Byron Swift is then himself shot dead in self-defence by the local copper. Thus begins the saga of Scrublands, a new mini-series set in regional Australia – and obviously there’s no mystery about whodunit.

In fact, at first there’s no mystery about anything at all. The priest had recently been accused of paedophilia, and the official explanation is that he got himself killed rather than face up to the crime. But then, a year later, burnt-out Sydney Morning Herald journalist Martin Scarsden arrives in town to write a perfunctory story about how the town is faring 12 months on, and starts to smell a rat.
Based on former journalist Chris Hammer’s best-selling novel of the same name, Scrublands is a thriller set in a remote country town, Riversend, which has been battered by years of drought, fire and flood, is reeling from a terrible act of violence, and harbours a profound distrust of outsiders generally, and anyone in the media specifically.
Producer David Redman, whose credits include Charlie & Boots and Strange Bedfellows, says distilling the novel, a whydunit rather than a whodunit, into a four-part series is no mean feat. “It’s amazing how much story you can tell in four episodes,” he says. “It’s pacy. No one’s going to fall asleep in this one, particularly not after the opening scene. It’s such an iconic and unusual way to start, as far as making sure you have an engaged, attentive audience.”
Writer Felicity Packard (Underbelly, Janet King) agrees. “The opening scene is pretty much what takes place in the novel. That’s a really powerful way to start. You’re not hiding your light under a bushel, it’s right up there in episode one, scene one.”

Director Greg McLean has form when it comes to filming Australian crime drama. His CV includes the legendary outback horror flick Wolf Creek. Packard enthuses about his vision. “He has such a strong idea of what he’s doing. He’s already got the edit in his head, so he know what he’s shooting for. He doesn’t just shoot the shit out of things, he knows what he wants.”
The story revolves around two men, the charismatic and dedicated but mysterious priest Byron, played by Jay Ryan (The Creamerie, Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake) and the jaded, frustrated journalist Martin, played by Luke Arnold (Michael Hutchence in INXS biopic Never Tear Us Apart). Linking the two is Mandy Bond, played by Bella Heathcote (The Man in the High Castle, Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows), the beguiling owner of the local bookstore-cafe who has a few secrets of her own.

It was McLean who introduced Heathcote to the project. “I’d worked with him on Bloom [with Bryan Brown and Jacki Weaver] a couple of years ago and he and I were going to do another project together and that didn’t happen sadly, and he said, ‘I’ve got this other great project.’ He sent me the first two episodes, and I was hooked, I wanted to know what happened next.”
Heathcote’s character, who had studied at uni in Melbourne before returning to look after her dying mother, fascinated the actor. “Mandy just seems so tough and cool. No bullshit, the way she carries herself through life, the way she interacts with people in the town. I just really admired her. So often she has those quips I wish I had in any given situation!”
Instinctively playing her cards close to her chest, Mandy has to decide if she can trust the journalist who’s just shown up in town. Martin, meanwhile, is reassessing his commitment to unearthing the truth after an investigative story that spun horribly out of control.
“Martin is someone who was jet setting around the world righting wrongs, bringing justice to the world,” Arnold says. “This truth is so important that you know, if I’m going to hurt a few people along the way, it’s worth it if the story gets out.”
“There’s been the tragedy of a massacre happening here and the media stomping around, and is Martin going to contribute to that, or through setting the story straight can he help give this town a new future?”
The other main character in the story is the fictional town of Riversend. Film crews worked on location around Maldon, near Bendigo, and at the more remote Nyah West, up in the Mallee. “The advantage we have over the book is we can show things,” says Redman. “So visually, I don’t know if it’s literally a thousand words per image but we are definitely able to express the sense of isolation very quickly through what we show.”
The town author Chris Hammer created is inherently cinematic, Arnold says. “The idea of the kind of isolated town that was really wrecked by the event, picking up the pieces, so lent itself to screen”, Arnold says. “These key moments, these key locations, the bookstore-cafe being the centrepiece for a bit of romance.
“This was a beautiful country town, there was the chance for a flourishing community, but what happens when a town gets tarred with this, all people now think of when they hear Riversend is this awful massacre. If you’re a business owner, if you’re a local, if your family has grown up here what does this do to yourself, your future, your investment in your community and your family?”
There’s always the temptation, Redman says, to make films in studios, citing his movies Charlie and Boots and Strange Bedfellows, both starring Paul Hogan, as examples that benefited hugely from breaking out and working on location. On this production, recent floods gave them plenty of detail to work with. “In Baringhup [near Maldon] there was a caravan park we were using for some of the scenes. In October last year it was 2 metres under water so all the caravans were ruined, these were people’s houses. We could’ve created that visually on a backlot somewhere, but you wouldn’t have got the same feeling that these are people’s homes.”
Also, filming on location can produce moments of visual serendipity. Packard recalls a scene where Martin is talking to the sympathetic local cop Robbie (played by Adam Zwar). “At the end of the scene Robbie’s left sitting on a park bench. Greg McLean didn’t call ‘cut’ straight away, just waited to see what the actors might do. The actors didn’t do anything, but a flock of 200 corellas came swooping down and circled around him and then took off. The whole crew just gasped.”
With its dramatic scenery and the increasingly murky activities of the townsfolk, the series has all the hallmarks of an Australian thriller, but still, the heroes, villains and victims of this tale are not the usual suspects. “There’s an awful lot of stories about young women being killed,” says Packard. ”Not that it’s great to see five men being shot dead, but we’re doing something quite different there, it’s a different sort of crime.”
Scrublands premieres on Stan on November 16.
