Megaman 9 yapping

The story of the 9th Rockman game was short and simple, but the idea behind it was always so peculiar to me. To recap, there is now a 4th law of robotic which gives them expiration date - this encourages scientists to create newer and more efficient model while saving energy and resources from maintaining old and outdated ones. However, it proves to be a problem because the robots in Rockman have "souls" akin to that of a human, which causes them to rebel and bring destruction humanity.

This is a story that touches on ethnics and certain area of philosophy, but particularly, I'm interested in how those elements affects the robots' psychology. In the game, after defeating 8 robot masters, you would get a cutscene showing how Wily manipulated them into joining his side and how he eventually reprogram them to be destructive. However, the robots still wanted to be of use to the humans until the end:

Dr. Wily: "Just because you reached some arbitrary expiration date doesn't mean you should be scrapped! You're all still quite useful! You have a right to live! I'm going to help you. Together we'll show the world how useful you all still can be!" Robot: "Hmm… perhaps you're right. We still want to be of use to people. Can you repair us?"

All in all, their usefulness dictates whether they deserved to live or not. Before I made this post, I thought Dr Wily was going to talk about how they shouldn't be scrapped because they have souls, but after rereading the script, I realized he just reverted back to talking about their usefulness. The robots don't seem to mind at all. It is as if they were programmed to think of way, or at least were conditioned to think that way due to their environment. If I, a human, were to be born along side my peers then before I even reach old age, I was suddenly told "The new is generation is better than you at art, so you need to be executed", then I would most likely lose all of my reasons and start going berserk as well. This is what happened in Hitoshi Ariga's manga: The 4th law get administered as usual, Dr Wily said the same thing, but he didn't reprogram them or manipulate them, he only offered to get rid of their expiration date. In the end, it was up to the robot themselves to decide whether they would revolt or not (and all of them did).

Hitoshi Ariga's interpretation is more believable than it is in the game, but it's hard for me to believe that all 100% of them would turn from obedient robots to war machines just like that. Once again, If I was suddenly told that my life was cut short because someone was better, I would be mad, but that is with the assumption that I am a human. The 9th numbers and robots, even though they have emotion and "souls" similar to that of a human, they are not human; It is similar to comparing the life of a dog and a cat. Of course, we haven't discovered any species that have a level of intelligence and emotional capability similar to human, so it is impossible to tell, but I think there would be a noticeable amount of conflict that comes from being a robot (a species that is meant to die and be improved upon) that has a human mind (a species that wants a fulfilling life).

Assuming there was a robot who wanted to live (as in Hitoshi Ariga's interpretation), but also believe that their life was taken for granted (as in the game version), there would a difficult character arc whether they were mind controlled by Dr Wily or not. Let's say it is Hitoshi Ariga's version where the robots act on their own, this character would follow the other 9th numbers in the revolution to get rid of the 4th law, but I doubt they would contribute that much because they feel indebted to the humans. They are incapable of helping those around them in the revolution, but at the same time they aren't willing to turn themselves in and end their life quickly. This also leads to another problem. Let's say they couldn't care less whether they die or not, but if they are close to the other 9th numbers, it would be a problem if they just gave in because that would mean their friend/sibling could potential die because of their listlessness. If there was a dilemma like that, it's either you lose yourself and join your siblings in exterminating human, or you run away from both the 9th numbers and the human and delay the inevitable.

Before he could continue, Protoman punches his friend in face and kicks him out of the way, unwilling to be talked out of what he intends to do, no matter who tries.

Arming his arm cannon anew, he aims directly at Wily the lethal plasma charging within the barrel, and with a thought he commands it to fire.

Megaman: Stop! 

Right into the side of Megaman who stood in the way of the bolt. Horror spreads across Protoman’s face as he sees his brother fall back from the force of the blast, a massive hole in his chest where his left arm used to be attached.

Circuits and wires spark inside twisted metal, as Megaman’s face, scorchmarked from the weapon, is frozen in shock, before he bounces on the ground flipping over just before falling off the edge of the building they are on.

The ground below, liberated workers and warriors and freinds from afar look on with pained looks and shock seeing one of their saviour’s seemingly mortally wound the other.

Before he fall’s, Protoman grabs hold of Megaman’s remaining hand.

Protoman: No! No, no, no, no. Why? Why did you do that? Why?!

Filled with regret the prototype wheezes, and pants, but with each simulated breath his expression grows darker, his shame growing ever quieter, as it kd replaced with the same conviction and rage he had moments ago when looking upon Wily. 

Megaman: [weakly] P, no.

Looking away from the flickering eyes of his brother after hearing his plea for his soul, but when he looks up again, his once black visor now shimmers with red.

Protoman: I’m done saving you.

With that declaration, he let’s go. Allowing, Megaman to fall into the dark crevice below.

Seeing their friends pass by them Samus reaches out in vain towards him, with only Link and Krystal’s grip keeping her from falling into the same pit as he disappears from sight.

The bonds of brotherhood severed, Protoman looks back at the still incapacitated Willy, as his remaining drones arrive to protect him, which means nothing to Protoman now consumed by rage as charges at them with a roar.

As Megaman falls below a strange energy, not from his world, wraps around him. And a powerful yet unmistakably kind voice ethos within his being.

???: Megaman, your noble sacrifice for the greater good has proven you worthy. We entrust this to you as the bridge between man and machine.

A circular shaped device with two handles on wither side appears before Megaman, shining with great and ancient power.

Above, Protoman stands above the crowd, in his hand a glowing upgrade pilfered from the remains of his victim.

Protoman: The age of man is over! No more false makers! Follow me, and you will never again be deceived! RISE UP!!!

Whipped into a frenzy many of the machines chant his final words, to the unease of Megaman's distinctly organic allies and his fellow champion's of co-existance.

Protoman: I, will lead us all into the future!

Placing the final upgrade in his case, Protoman's body grows and shifts, his once humble grey colour encased entirely in red armor, as he discard the shield gifted to him by Dr. Light, for a green energy sword which he raises above him as he declares to all assembled his new name.

Protoman/Zero: I...  am... Zero!

Below Megaman's broken body begins to be rebuilt by the strange matrix as it merges with him, its power surging as Megaman grows in size and strength, as the knowledge of great leaders amassed within is shared with him.

The Last Prime: ARISE... Manus Prime.

With a manic grin the now power mad machine removes and casts off the shield module given to him by Dr. Light and inserts the coveted upgrade into his chest. His body shifting and growing as his once grey colours are covered completely by red and white armor, a sword emerges from his back which Protoman takes hold of and ignites raising the green blade above home she declares his new name for all to hear

Protoman: I... am...

Zero: ZERO!!!

Below Megaman’s broken body begins to be rebuilt by the strange matrix as it merges with him, its power surging as Megaman grows in size and strength, as the knowledge of great leaders amassed within is shared with him.

As the transformation completed a spirit manifests before Megaman's still prone form, a large robot decorated in blue and red with a distinct shield where his mouth hold be which moves as he speaks.

The Last Prime: ARISE… Manus Prime.

And with that, he who had once been Megaman opens his eyes and ascends with powerful rockets back up to the surface.

Hopefully this post won't feel too rushed; it certainly is rare for me to get contest results posted before 2 days have passed. For this category, participants were tasked with creating an image celebrating White Day, with the requirement that their art mimic the "rubber hose" art style from around the 1920's. A cute scene with Rock presenting Alia with a ring that was made even better by adding an alternate original Gameboy palette pixel version of the same art. That added creativity made an adorable pic stand out even more, to give two different retro vibes to your art.

For this category, entries needed to contain a character wearing an out-of-place holiday-themed skin or outfit that was not Valentine's Day-related, while in a Valentine's Day scene or setting. Being the humor category, the more it makes us laugh, the better! 1.) @aurantia-ignis [Entry] $175 Winner!

🎵Zero the Snowman was a jolly, happy soul...but are YOU happy, Ciel? I love how Zero took White Day this literally to don this amusing snowman outfit. And out of all the entries for this category, you pulled off the absurdly humorous costume the best.

2.) @drewblossom [Entry] $100 Winner!

It might just be a simple party hat, but I mean, Bass isn't wrong. Subtle, but I was amused! The heart shaped speech bubble was a nice touch to help sell the dialogue's punch line as well.

Clever way to show the rush in changing between events, as RiCO is in part Valentine's skin and part Celebration skin dress that are digitally switching. ViA has it much easier throwing on a coat. It's always easier for the guys to get ready, as they say.

While Zero and Iris are dressed for the day, X's date does sort of have that Halloween vibe to her, as a witch.
