Stoic Serenity Amidst Chaos: A Visual Meditation

In the heart of chaos, there lies a serene oasis, untouched and undisturbed. Each image from my newest gallery involving Asian woman paints a vivid picture of a the warrior part of them poised in meditation, sipping tea, her mind a tranquil sea even as the world around her is consumed by fire and turmoil. It's a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit and the profound depths of inner peace.

The ancient Stoics, philosophers who hailed from Greece and Rome, would have deeply resonated with this imagery. They believed that while we cannot always control external events, we can control our reactions to them. As the renowned Stoic philosopher Epictetus once said, "Men are disturbed not by things, but by the view which they take of them." The gallery embodies this philosophy, illustrating that even amidst the fiercest storms, one can find stillness within.

Marcus Aurelius, a Roman Emperor and Stoic philosopher, wrote in his personal notes, known as "Meditations," about the impermanence of all things and the importance of accepting the natural order of the universe. He would often remind himself that the nature of the world is constantly changing, and it's our duty to navigate through it with grace and equanimity.

The warriors in these images seem to have internalized this wisdom. The world around them may be in disarray, but they remain anchored, their inner worlds untouched by the external chaos.

Seneca, another prominent Stoic, often spoke of the inner citadel, a fortress within us that remains impervious to external adversities. He wrote, "We suffer more often in imagination than in reality." The gallery captures this essence beautifully. The warriors, despite the evident chaos around them, are not suffering. Their minds are not clouded by the smoke or distracted by the flames. They are present, grounded, and at peace.

The act of drinking tea in these images is symbolic. Tea ceremonies, especially in Asian cultures, are rituals of mindfulness and presence. Every movement, every sip, is deliberate and considered. It's a dance of awareness. By juxtaposing this act of mindfulness with scenes of chaos, the gallery emphasizes the stark contrast between inner peace and external disorder.

The message is clear: True strength doesn't come from battling the world but from mastering one's mind. The world will always have its battles, its fires, its storms. But we have the choice to let them affect us or to remain undisturbed. As the Stoic philosopher, Epictetus advised, "Don't demand that things happen as you wish, but wish that they happen as they do happen, and you will go on well."

A Day Off?

I feel like I haven't had a day off to be lazy in forever. But today...today I slept in, I listened to the rain (it's raining! I can't weed the gardens...I am happy and not-so-happy all at the same time), and now I am sitting on my settee by the window, sipping coffee, and listening to the on-city sounds blend with the city sounds. The chirping of birds post-rain (guess I get to weed after all), the crickets singing their songs, the distance sounds of cars hitting puddles, the helicopter heading to the hospital. It won't be a full day off. I have to do that Mom thing where I drive children around and buy birthday gifts and such. But for now...for now I sit in this space of mine and enjoy the moment.

When I saw this piece last month I couldn’t completely explain why it drew me. Now I think I know....

Wives of Sango by Jeff Donaldson, 1971, is at Brooklyn Museum (from NMAAHC). "Oshun, Oba and Oya, are the three wives of Sango the god of thunder in the Yoruba tradition of Africa. In one story, Sango’s wives taught him how to fight and made him stronger in battle. By depicting three women who look ready for battle themselves, Jeff Donaldson paid tribute to women who had important leadership roles in Black liberation movements.” This art spoke to me on many levels, as a black woman and as a lover and protector of life and all that flows - like the ocean. Oshun and Oba are water goddesses and their tales with Oba and Sango are well known across Caribbean, Latin and West African culture.

Today, as I reflect on the politics and power struggles of men, I feel the calm knowledge that like MLK said “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” Unity, especially amongst women, has to prevail. If these women could find solidarity why can’t we? Legend and art imitate life.
