Things I have dreamed about:
- ranking all the steely dan albums
- one of my friends keeps stubbing out joints on my bed and i can't get her to stop
- Nick Cave was in it that's all I can remember
- watching a documentary about Sunscreen MacLean, the first man to ever play in the WNBA
- theresa may and michael gove had a big argument in Parliament where they screamed and swore at each other
- i interviewed black country new road shortly after isaac left and accidentally shouted out Matt from black midi instead
- i walked to tesco while listening to Nights by Frank Ocean and i arrived there perfectly at the beat switch
- thom yorke came to my house with the new radiohead album and challenged me to walk across my garden in less than 20 seconds (extremely possible task in real life) or he'd take it away and i couldn't make it
- am i good enough friends with sufjan stevens to add him to a Discord server
- drake releases a song and everyone unanimously agrees it is the worst one ever made
- i'm in the room with the cross from the National Accident Helpline ad https://youtu.be/lXFbLMy9tjU
- i was in the playground near my house and had to rush home to do an listening party of Dangerous by Michael Jackson
- Nic Jones's Baby Einstein songs
- Jordan Peterson was my Computer Science teacher at uni where my class was from 1am-3am
- Simpsons brand chips and salsa cause me to hallucinate a Simpsons-animated video for The Cinema Show
- i owned Yanqui UXO on vinyl
- i did a sick pogo stick trick and broke my legs
- 100 gecs show at the soft play area i went to as a kid
- my parents bought a horse and it lived in the house with us and then it headbutted me into a wall from behind
- jason lytle vs deontay wilder world title fight
- I was walking down this street in Hastings and I saw Martin Kemp from Spandau Ballet collapsed on the path, covered in blood, after falling and hitting his head on a railing. Me and my family carried him home and as soon as we got him in he started vomiting everywhere which caused me to projectile vomit specifically on a pile of magazines in my bedroom. Everyone kept calling him Tony Hadley.

Ollie Campesinos!' favourite records of the decade
December 18th, 2009
Between now and the new year, we nine that have been in Los Campesinos! over the past decade (or past year, infact) will be posting personal lists of our favourite records of the decade. We are not dealing in universal terms of ‘best’. Our intention is merely to inform you, dear readers, of our individual favourite albums. Starting this whole charade is drumsman, Oliver Campesinos!.
Tumblr media
A TOP TEN
10. Modest Mouse – The Moon and Antarctica (Epic, 2000) Modest Mouse’s first album on a major and what many people regard as the start of the decline of Modest Mouse being a credible “indie” band.   This is still Modest Mouse, but Version 2.0.  Having more money enabled Modest Mouse to up the production stakes and therefore the record sounds a lot better than The Lonesome Crowded West.  Isaac Brock was clearly worried about signing to a major with lyrics like “Well, it took a lot of work to be the ass I am/ And I’m really damn sure that anyone can/ equally, easily fuck you over.”  Isaac does allow the music to talk for itself a lot, no doubt due to the fact that he got his jaw broken whilst recording.
9. Spoon – Kill The Moonlight (Merge, 2002) Spoon used the studio to their full advantage on their second album with Merge.  Using voice and claps as rhythm sections rather than drums on some songs; check out Back to Life to experience this properly.  Moreover, adding layers of backing vocals added a lot of texture and mood to pieces.  Spoon don’t go over the top with this though, still relying on the core instruments of their band, rather; using the placing of mikes and mixing techniques to make this record really enjoyable to listen to on headphones.  Spoon have created a stripped back sounding record whilst still maintaining a high quality of production.
8. Franz Ferdinand – Franz Ferdinand (Domino, 2004) With The Strokes and The Libertines came a whole wave of so-called “indie” bands.  Franz Ferdinand came from a different angle, instead of using jangly guitars they employed four on the floor beats, catchy guitar riffs and wrote songs that were laden with pop hooks.  Take Me Out is probably one of the ten greatest pop songs ever written.  Franz Ferdinand is filled with catchy songs; every one a hook, that as soon as it comes on the radio or club you instantly know what it is.  Franz Ferdinand managed to create a classy and suave image in indie, with smart clothes, literal lyrics and avant-garde artwork.
7. Super Furry Animals – Phantom Power (Epic, 2003) After the commercial success of Rings Around The World, Phantom Power tends to get overlooked, despite receiving widespread critical acclaim.  Phantom Power was a back to basics for the Super Furry Animals.  It is a much more fluid album than Rings Around The World.  The album has been written so that it flows, gradually changing the feeling of the record rather than a rapid change from one song to the next.  The record is much more a guitar record compared to the heavy reliance of electronics on Rings.  The song Slow Life is one of my favourite Super Furry Animal songs.
6. The National – Alligator (Beggars Banquet, 2005) Between Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers and Alligator The National seemed to change their approach to how they wrote music.  Instead of being a guitar-based band, all the instruments became key parts.  Bryan Devendorf’s drumming has become an important part of the songs, the drums almost playing the riffs, allowing the guitars and other instruments to play around the “drum riff”.   Matt Berninger seemed to become a stronger and more confident lyricist creating powerful imagery with his lyrics.  All of this goes towards making a powerful and inspiring record that shot The National from being nobodies to a widely acclaimed band.
5. Grandaddy – The Sophtware Slump (V2, 2000) Jason Lytle wrote a concept album about how technology and nature cannot get a long; Jed the Humanoid dies from drinking alcohol when he is robot.  But somehow Grandaddy manage to make nature and technology work; combining acoustic guitars with electronics and topped off with Jason Lytle’s Neil Young esque vocals.  Lytle creates a dark image of the future, writing these songs just as the millennium approached.  However, the millennium bug never happened and somehow the music, despite the lyrics, gives you hope for the future.
4. TV On The Radio – Return to Cookie Mountain (4AD, 2006) TV On The Radio with their second album that propelled them into the limelight combined anthemic rock with rhythm and blue grooves.  Tunde’s and Kyp’s soulful vocals create a great contrast to the music created with Dave Sitek’s production.  Sitek’s production tucks loops and instruments into nooks and crannies in the songs, when you think it might be over a new synth line comes in.  Jaleel Bunton’s drumming could almost be on a hip-hop record, keeping the groove whilst instruments and vocals dance around it.  TV On The Radio aren’t an art band, they are a rock band with a soulful edge.
3. Deerhunter – Microcastle (4AD, 2008) With Microcastle, Deerhunter took everything that they had developed in Cryptograms and added a rockier side to it.  Microcastle is very different from early Deerhunter, whilst maintaining the use of ambience and vocal effects; they have now developed a more structured sound.  The fragility of Bradford Cox’s lyrics are supported with ambient sounds created by Lockett Pundt, backed up by a superb rhythm section in Moses Archuleta and Josh Fauver.  Cox allows the lyrics to be only a small part of the song allowing the music to do the talking, for example Nothing Ever Happened has only about 30 seconds worth of lyrics on it.
2. Broken Social Scene – You Forget It In People (Arts and Crafts, 2002) With the opening track you think Broken Social Scene’s second record is going to be like the first Feel Good Lost, lots of ambience and post-rock, but then KC Accidental kicks in, in all its majestic glory, and just blows you out of the water, the 6/8 breakdowns really lifting the song, and then it drops allowing Kevin Drew to sing before it all thunders back in.  You realise how talented these people are when they can write a great song like Stars and Sons whilst setting up to start recording this record.  Despite the amount of people and instruments, David Newfeld manages to control it and turn it into a great sounding record.
1. Arcade Fire – Funeral (Merge, 2004) When I came to University I was into bands like Iron Maiden and Rage Against The Machine.  We started the band and Tom gave me a track called Wake Up by a band called Arcade Fire.  I listened to it and it just changed my whole music listening experience.  I bought the album and my life changed forever.  Funeral is filled with massive songs from the opener Tunnels right through to Wake Up and Rebellion (Lies).  Owen Pallett’s arrangements should not be overlooked, filling the songs with raw emotion and creating an anthemic sound.  Arcade Fire had raised the flag for indie music and had shown that it wasn’t just men in skinny jeans or cardigans.  Funeral was the soundtrack of my university years and I still get chills down my spine when I listen to it.

Rewatching Me and My Dick
Tumblr media
While I understand many people’s trepidation when it comes to Me and My Dick, my rewatch of this show for Rewatchers With a Thousand Eyes gave me a new appreciation for it. I myself waited a few years to watch it after it came out. I was 14 when they put it on YouTube and had only just watched AVPM and was therefore new to the fandom; I was nervous that I would be too uncomfortable with the subject matter. There’s a reason that they have an Adult Content warning, and I think still have it age-blocked. It’s about high schoolers played by college students (only a few years apart really), but young high schoolers like me then may not be ready for this type of content. And by this type of content, I mean frequent discussion and representation of sex and genitalia. I think they do it as tastefully as possible, though; I’m not that uncomfortable with it watching it now, but I’m also nearly 27 instead of 14. Even my asexual ass can find enjoyment in it, and I think it’s because this show has so much more to offer than just the surface level content.
What makes this show special are its messages about relationships (romantic and platonic) and self-worth. Joey has his ideas about what a romantic relationship should be (sexual attraction) because he’s a horny and lonely teenager, so he pines after Vanessa and then pursues her with the guidance of his foolish teenage heart. He overlooks his platonic friendship with Sally because he’s not immediately sexually attracted to her; he never considers her as an option at all until the end. Sally is a hopeless romantic with an obsession with Joey Richter; she has her own sexual desires but doesn’t think she’s worthy of any romantic or sexual relationship because of her low self-esteem. It’s only when Joey understands the difference and balance between sexual and romantic attraction that he sees that “what [he] needed was the one who [was] perfect for [him]”, i.e. Sally! Sally can stop obsessing over Joey and start to form a real relationship with him once she confesses her feelings and gains some self-confidence when he eventually reciprocates. These are great messages for young people in new relationships to learn!
This is all balanced with great jokes, delightful character acting, and fun music. Not all the jokes are sex jokes, though: besides the witty one-liners and everything with Joey’s heart, Sally’s excitable nature when it comes to the chemistry project (a film noir about silver nitrate) gets me every time! The main characters are fun, especially because Joey and Jaime delight me to no end, but the side characters are vibrant too! Vanessa and Tiffany are obviously great best friends who are most definitely in love with each other without realizing it, and Ali Gordon and Alle-Faye Monka really sell it--and it makes me sad that we barely saw those two after this show (Ali was in A VHS Christmas Carol and Alle-Faye was in A Very Potter Senior Year and A Very StarKid Reunion; both were at StarKid Homecoming, and it was so nice to see them again!).
The music is underrated, and we need to talk about it. First, the brass! The songs that aren’t stereotypical pop musical songs are big band jazz numbers, and the brass section is so fun! Numbers like “Listen to Your Heart” and “Land of the Dicks” are reminiscent of classic jazz standards with the instrumentation and upbeat tempo. They bring in some funk for “Big T’s Temptation” (listen to that smooth bass), and Corey Dorris kills it as always! As for the pop songs, they’re still stellar! “Me and My Dick” and “Ready to Go” are a great combo for a classic musical theatre intro, bringing in each character and their wants and needs only to combine them all in a fun chorus by the end of the number. “Even Though” is a beautiful love song for an underrated StarKid couple.
Me and My Dick may not be my favorite StarKid show (more power to you if it is), but it’s not without its merits! Thank you Nick Lang, Matt Lang, Brian Holden and Eric Kahn Gale for such a fun coming-of-age story and A.J. Holmes, Darren Criss, and Carlos Valdes for a great mix of pop and jazz songs and score!

Should StarKid omit the 'Cho Chang' bit in Goin' Back To Hogwarts from future performances?
This question has been bugging me for quite a while now. With Devin Lytle speaking out on feeling discomfort about the role of Cho Chang and not doing any events because she felt the need to apologise for singing the part, Darren often skipping the bit in live shows or taking the time to explain the context, and StarKid themselves omitting the part in both A Very StarKid Reunion and StarKid Homecoming, should they be dropping the Cho Chang part from all future performances of Goin' Back To Hogwarts?
Possible options: (since Tumblr doesn’t have a poll option)
A) Yes, they should drop it B) No, they should keep it C) Maybe? I don’t know D) Keep it in but explain it
(Note: I know this is probably a sensitive and/or controversial topic, please keep it civilised!)

Unpopular opinion (apparently)
None of the Starkid members are overrated because they are all talented, and sometimes people just have a preference for certain vocal/personality types. Stop bashing on other fans just because they like something.

Personal Thoughts:
When one first hears of a comedic musical about pubescent high schoolers and their singing penises and vaginas, one does not think, “Wow, what a sophisticated concept that dissects the relationship between gender roles and sexual identity in modern day society,” but that’s what StarKid Productions’ Me and My Dick is truly about. At first, having the main character’s genitalia being completely separate but complementary entities to the teenagers at the center of the storyline seems jarring and like it was only done for comedic purposes, but the longer and more complicated the plot gets, the more obvious it seems to be. The main character, Joey Richter and his relationship with his Dick is a very compelling one. Throughout the musical, Joey struggles with coming to terms with his sexuality as a teenage boy. At the beginning, Joey himself reflects the average stereotype of the sex-obsessed male teenager whose primary interest is getting laid rather than achieving emotional fulfillment. Later, when his Dick becomes interested in his neighbor Sally’s Miss Cooter, Joey and his Dick have a fight about what that attraction means for their relationship and eventually separate, before eventually coming back together once Joey develops a relationship with his Heart. Joey himself is his own entity, with his own thoughts, feelings, and goals, and his struggles with his Dick and his Heart represent very real internal struggles that many teenagers, and especially teenage boys, have with themselves, their sexuality, and their personal emotions.
Joey’s Dick, as well as the other character’s sexual organs, represent the subconscious sexual identities of each character. For Joey, his sexual identity cannot be fully realized or appreciated by himself because he has not fully matured as a sexual being. Unlike Sally, Joey does not realize that in order to achieve sexual fulfillment, he needs to not only be physically attracted to someone, but also experience an emotional connection with someone, which is something that Dick AKA his sexual subconscious realizes before Joey and even his Heart do. This journey is the perfect example of the dangers of a sex-oriented society, and how that kind of society damages the well-being of maturing men and women. In Western society, the ideal sexually mature man is defined by his sexual prowess and dominance. If he can have sex with a bunch of hot women and not worry about how emotionally in-tune he is with himself and his personal relationships, then he is the ideal man. Society teaches men (and women) from a very young age that a man’s defining trait is his sexual attitude towards others.
The ideal sexually mature woman, on the other hand, is represented by the character Tiffany, who is arguably the most sympathetic character in the musical. Through the perspective of her vagina, lovingly referred to as The Old Snatch (aptly named as Tiffany’s sexuality represents the general mistreatment of women’s sexual selves in society), we see that Tiffany is the unfortunate byproduct of such a male dominant sexually oriented culture. The only time Tiffany has ever experienced true sexual fulfillment was during her first time having sex with an unnamed male character she was in love with. However, it was later revealed that this character used Tiffany only for his own sexual enjoyment and did not truly love her, intensely hurting Tiffany’s feelings and resulting in her being used to getting treated as a sexual object whose existence is only beneficial for men’s pleasure rather than her own emotional and sexual fulfillment.
Another, more subtle, detail that emphasizes this theme is Sally’s opening section in “Ready to Go.” While singing, Sally already knows that she has a crush on Joey, but her low self-esteem and worries about her own attractiveness lead her to become sexually repressed, to the point where her vagina, Miss Cooter, has to ‘fall in love’ with Joey’s Dick in order to Sally to realize that she not only experiences, but truly desires having sex with Joey.
What I love about the representation of the character’s and their respective sexual organs is that they are tethered to one another through some kind of leash-type object that allows for the penis or vagina character to be connected to their person but freely move around and act as their own character without them. While this is beneficial for the actors and entertaining for the audience to see these beings take on a life of their own, it also compliments the theme of sexual identity and maturity very well. By choosing to have penises and vaginas tethered to, but not completely physically attached to their teenage counterparts, it communicates to the audience that the sexual identity the genitalia represents in of course a very important factor of the person’s life and individuality, but ultimately not the be-all, end-all of who a person truly is. While Dick, Miss Cooter, Old Snatch, and other characters go through their own journey, the most important development is the ones that their human attachments experience. The sexuality of the character is an integral part of who the character is and how they navigate their life, but in the end, the most important thing is that the human characters go through their own development in which their sexuality compliments, but never dick-tates (sorry, I had to).
The ultimate take away from Me and My Dick is that in order to be a fully realized individual, one has to recognize and accept all parts of themselves, instead of just focusing on their physical sexual selves and ignoring their personal feelings, or overemphasizing their emotional feelings while ignoring their physical, sexual needs.
“[Dick] is a part of you like I am, Joey. You need him and Sally needs him” - Joey’s Heart <3
“We gotta start thinking of love and sex as a team effort. We can’t just pine over a girl we can’t get or be in a constant pursuit of sex. We need to listen to each other because that’s the only way it can work out” -Joey Richter

Out of every villain across the board in fiction, I’ve always respected Darkseid’s flex. If you don’t know who Darkseid is, I’ll learn you right quick. Darkseid is a big big man from a planet called Apokolips that’s got beef with their sister planet New Genesis. He’s constantly looking for Anti-Life Equation which will help him enslave the universe to his will. He’s Superman’s most dangerous enemy and he is evil incarnate. Darkseid is all that’s evil in the DC Universe. Now when I say evil, I’m not talking Saturday morning cartoon villain evil. I’m talking dude in the in the red Hyundai that shot Ricky. Scar telling Mufasa “Long live the king” before his Tom Petty free-fallin’. Regina George telling you to go to Sears with the rest of the poors.
Darkseid is all that but way worse. Darkseid is the voice telling you to smack the shit outta Greg in accounting for eating your yogurt. Let’s consort the comic book writer elders on this. The way Julian Lytle tells it, “He’s that thing that you can’t deny is there, that’s pushing you toward darkness.” and Tom King breaks it down like this, “He’s the evil inside of us. He’s the darkness. He’s the thing inside of us that calls us to do the wrong thing or be warped the wrong way. That’s inescapable: Darkseid exists. That’s there.” Get it? You can’t escape Darkseid. Darkseid is violence. Darkseid is the infinite sadness. Darkseid is… However, all that has nothing to do with why I respect his flex. But his dress game tho?!
Darkseid is… serving looks!
Tumblr media
Look at the fucking fit! You see that? The evilest person in the DC Universe out here with enough confidence to say who the fuck goin’ check, step, or come at me, boo? That’s the energy I want from my villains. Lex Luthor could never! Look at the body positivity oozing out them thigh high boots. Thanos (bit a hearty helping from Darkseid but) would never. Mutha fuckas wanna talk about serving looks and bring up Loki? *Soulja Boy voice* Looooooooooooki?! *mushes’em in the face out Darkseid’s way on the runway*
Do you not see the Sunday Church Service usher gloves? The belt resting on the hips that ain’t doing a Bast damn thing except serving. The belt not holding anything else up but fashion. I said this is fashion bish! Darkseid giving you the “I been on this evil shit” 16 bars and a shot at the goods at the same damn time and you mutha fuckas wanna talk about some damn Loki?! Ain’t a villain alive built for the stunt like Darkseid is… The gawd, Jack Kirby, created Darkseid back in 1970 and introduced stunt into the DC Universe for the very first fucking time.
Darkseid is… not here to play with you heauxs
Tumblr media
Darkseid been rocking this look since the ’70s, but don’t let the dress fool you. Darkseid the evilest person on the block and ready to stomp muh fuckas out in sundress. He washed Superman straight up and down Metropolis’ streets and invaded his city wearing nothing but a sundress, southern bell gloves, a belt that doesn’t hold anything (cause mutha fuckin’ fashion), Saint Laurent Meurice suede knee-high kinky boots, and (what I assume) are leggings. How you fucking somebody up that badly and still got mobility with a dress and boots on? No tear in the dress. No run in the leggings. A Professional! How you avoid getting any blood on the fit while backhanding? The southern bell gloves make the backhand serve that much worse too, let’s not overlook that fact.
Darkseid slapped that man twice, skipped the duel, and gave’em nothing but heel action. An Icon. Do you not see this villain out here werking for y’all? Darkseid’s whole fit exterior the same color as Fenty Mattemoiselle Plus Matte Lipstick. Do you not see that man’s complexion poppin’ as he curb stomps Kal-El? Illest villain in the game. Illest villain in thee game! Wilson Fisk doesn’t have the ambition for this. The Joker and his suits lack the artistic vision! Sundress n****! I’m talking bout a different level of stunt, baby: get on it.
