What Makes an Ethnic Villain "Ethnic" or "Villainous?" How Do You Offset it?
anonymous asked:
Hello WWC! I have a question about the antagonist of my story. She is (currently) Japanese, and I want to make sure I’m writing her in a way that doesn’t associates [sic] her being Asian with being villainous.  The story is set in modern day USA, this character is effectively immortal. She was a samurai who lost loved ones due to failure in combat, and this becomes her character[sic] motivation (portrayed sympathetically to the audience). This story explores many different time periods and how women have shown valor throughout history. The age of the samurai (and the real and legendary female warriors from it) have interested me the most, which is why I want her to be from this period.  The outfit she wears while fighting is based on samurai armor, and she wears modern and traditional Japanese fashion depending on the occasion. She acts pretty similar to modern day people, though more cynical and obsessed with her loss. She’s been able to adapt with the times but still highly values and cherishes her past.  She is the only Asian main character, but I plan to make a supportive Japanese side character. She’s a history teacher who knows about the villain and gives the protagonists information to help them, but isn’t involved in the main plot otherwise.  Are the way I’m writing this villain and the inclusion of a non-antagonist Japanese character enough to prevent a harmful reading of the story, or is there more I should do?
Why Does Your Villain Exist?
This makes me feel old because David Anders plays a villain with this kind of backstory in the series Heroes starring Masi Oka.
I think you want to think about what you mean when you say:
Villainous (In what way? To whom? To what end?)
Harmful (What tropes, narratives and implications are present?)
I’m relatively infamous in the mod circle for not caring too much about dimensions of “harm”. The concept is relative and varies widely between people and cultures. I don’t see much value in framing motivations around “What is less harmful?” I think for me, what matters more is:
“What is more true?”
“Are characteristics viewed as intrinsic to background, or the product of experiences and personal autonomy?”
“Will your portrayal resonate with a large audience?”
“What will resonate with the members of the audience who share the backgrounds your characters have?”
This post offers additional questions you could ask yourself instead of “is this okay/not okay/harmful.”
You could write a story where your antagonist is sly, sadistic, violent and cold-blooded. It may not be an interpretation that will make many Japanese from combat backgrounds feel seen or heard, but it’s not without precedent. These tropes have been weaponized against people of Japanese descent (Like Nikkei Japanese interned during World War II), but Japan also brutalized a good chunk of Asia during World War II. See Herge’s Tintin and The Blue Lotus for an example of a comic that accurately showcases the brutality of Japan’s colonization of Manchuria, but also is racist in terms of how Japanese characters are portrayed (CW: genocide, war, imperialism, racism).
You could also write a story where your character’s grief gives way to despair, and fuels their combat such that they are seen as calculating, frigid and deeply driven by revenge/ violence. This might make sense. It’s also been done to death for Japanese female warriors, though (See “Lady Snowblood” by Kazuo Koike and Kazuo Kamimura here, CW: sexual assault, violence, murder and a host of other dark things you’d expect in a revenge story).
You could further write a story where your antagonist is not necessarily villainous, but the perceived harm comes from fetishizing/ exoticizing elements in how her appearance is presented or how she is sexualized, which is a common problem for Japanese female characters.
My vote always goes to the most interesting story or character. I don’t see any benefit to writing from a defensive position. This is where I'll point out that, culturally, I can't picture a Japanese character viewing immortality as anything other than a curse. Many cultures in Japan are largely defined by transience and the understanding that many things naturally decay, die, and change form.
There are a lot of ways you could conceivably cause harm, but I’d rather hear about what the point of this character is given the dilemma of their position.
What is her purpose for the plot?
How is she designed to make the reader feel?
What literary devices are relevant to her portrayal?
(Arbitrarily, you can always add more than 1 extra Japanese character. I think you might put less pressure on yourself with this character’s portrayal if you have more Japanese characters to practice with in general.)
- Marika.
When Off-Setting: Aim for Average
Seconding the above with regards to this villainess’s story and your motivations for this character, but regardless of her story I think it’s also important to look specifically at how the Japanese teacher character provides contrast.
I agree with the choice to make her a regular person and not a superhero. Otherwise, your one Asian character is aggressively Asian-themed in a stereotypical Cool Japan way (particularly if her villain suit is samurai-themed & she wears wafu clothing every so often). Adding a chill person who happens to be Japanese and doesn’t have some kind of ninja or kitsune motif will be a breath of fresh air (well, more like a sigh of relief) for Japanese readers.
A note on characterization—while our standard advice for “offset” characters is to give your offset character the opposite of the personality trait you’re trying to balance, in this case you might want to avoid opposites. You have a villainess who is a cold, tough “don’t need no man” type. Making the teacher mild-mannered, helpful, and accomodating would balance out the villainess’s traits, but you’ll end up swinging to the other side of the pendulum towards the Submissive Asian stereotype depending on execution. If avoiding stereotypes is a concern, I suggest picking something outside of that spectrum of gentleness to violence and making her really boring or really weird or really nerdy or a jock gym teacher or
something. You’re the author.
Similarly, while the villainess is very traditionally Japanese in her motifs and backstory, don’t make the teacher go aggressively in either direction—give her a nice balance of modern vs. traditional, Japanese vs. Western sensibilities as far as her looks, dress, interests, values, etc. Because at the end of the day, that’s most modern Japanese people.
Sometimes, the most difficult representation of a character of color is making a character who is really average, typical, modern, and boring.

things to note in the mean time: she’s on the run from her former pack due to abusive and borderline cult like behavior. she does not and will not talk about this part of her past for any reason. if she talks to someone openly about an old pack, it’s probably a lie or the pack grew up in from birth to age 18. she was in the abusive pack from age 22-24 before finally  escaping.

some MM x EM is nice.
“This isn’t it
” He mutters, eyes to the screens as his hands move about. He doesn’t even glance at the others as slowly his hands move to a stop. He clicks his tongue.
“What is wrong with this?” As he spoke those words, there was a sound of footsteps nearing his door. His eyes glance towards it half-heartedly, his dynamos whirring while the screens die out. A minute later, the footsteps stop.
A knock on the door and someone calls out, “Masi?”
He sighs as the mage peers in the room. His body relaxes as his dynamos restart his screens. He turns his back towards her as he tries to study the data in front of him. As much as possible with a certain person hovering near him.
“Rena says it’s dinner time.” She tells him, her eyes noticing the text that streams down his screens. Her gaze stays on the screen, almost sparkling as she watches it move.
Masi scoffs. “You can’t understand anything, can you?”
“Hey!” Elem glares at him. “Even so, it’s still interesting!”
With a swipe of his hand, the screens once again die out. He stands up as he fixes his coat, “Let’s go.”
He leaves first and Elem looks enviously at his dynamos, “It really was interesting
I’ve never seen that amount of information since I was studying.”
She leaves the room as well, catching up before Masi arrives in the dining room.
Elem cranes her neck, hearing an ongoing conversation. She closes her book as Masi and Eve passes by.
“I’m telling you, Masi. I have no information regarding that scope in nasod machinery.” Eve tells him, a hint of frustration in her voice.
“No information?” Masi repeats incredulously. “You’re the Queen of Nasods. How can you not know?”
Her eyes narrow in annoyance. “I’d rather not keep information that’s bound to be useless and the information you require is far too primitive to be of use to the current generation of nasods.”
“If you’ll excuse me, I still have to meet with Raven.” Eve quickly walks off, leaving him alone as he stared at her back.
“Primitive?” He whispers. Elem could barely hear it. “It’s one of the ancient ways of the first generation nasods.”
His fists clench, his shoulders tensing before he breathes a sigh. It didn’t feel like they even noticed Elem was just right behind them even as Masi left for his lab.
“First generation nasods, huh.” She tests the word with her tongue. A decision set to mind as she heads off to the opposite direction, her book in her hands.
Masi growls, slumping forward as he glares at the red words that littered the multiple windows he had open. It has been another uneventful week with going over the numbers, codes and anything he can check but he still can’t find what was wrong with his current problem.
It was a mere whim. A whim to check if he can replicate the engines he once created in the past. It decided to not work on him when in the past he can clearly remember that it exploded on him multiple times.
He gives an exasperated sigh, tipping his head back in an attempt to calm down. Emotions simply hinder progress in times of distress. He blinks once again as he hears a set of footsteps. He doesn’t move, only looking at the person who’s still awake at three in the morning.
“What are you doing here?” He asks her. She freezes, looking at him with wide eyes.
“You’re awake?” He smirks, turning his dynamos to face her.
“I should be the one asking you that.” He pointedly told her. “Why are you trying to sneak in my lab?”
“I-” She stammers as she obviously tries to think of a reason before giving a languid sigh “Ok, fine. I wanted to find something.”
“And you thought you could just take it from my lab at three in the morning.”
“I didn’t think you were awake!” She exclaims, trying to hush her voice. Masi looks at her with a raised eyebrow. She thought that he won’t be awake? He spun in place, turning his back once again.
“Get what you want. I’m busy here.” He droned, turning back to the screens. A thieving mage is the least of his worries.
He tries to recheck the diagrams, only one more before he goes to sleep, when she looks over his shoulder. Her presence is distracting.  “Do you mind?”
She remains silent. Masi’s not a patient person when dealing with all-nighters so he turns her head, ready to berate her when, “It’s too little.”
Masi looks at her as she looks to his screens. “Too little?”
Elem nods her head, “The amount of El that you’re trying to use is too little.”
“What?”
Elem looks at him, her forehead wrinkling as she reached out a hand to point at the screens. “Look, the amount of El from the past is significantly larger than the one we have right now. You assumed that the current El we have will power the engine but it’s far too little that it won’t even react.”
‘How would you even know that?’ He bites back his words and turns back to the screens. He performs his own scan, another test, another trial. With Elem blurting out comments with his every move, his patience was reaching a record-breaking all time low.
“Higher.” She interrupted..
“Higher?” His voice with disbelief as he looks at her like a mad person. “Are you mad? The engine will be destroyed and I have to redo everything again!”
She crosses her arms and gives him a look ‘‘I know what I’m doing.’ He fumes silently. If it weren’t for her being right since the first time, he wouldn’t even do this. He increased the input of the El, preparing in case it exploded but it simply lit up. His eyes widen as the engine started to work, started to respond for the first time in at least a week.
“See!” Her lips curl into a proud smirk, puffing her chest. “I told you it would work!”
He looks at her still not believing that she was right. “How did you know that?”
Without a beat, she responded, “I’m a genius!” She laughed. “I read about it.”
“Read?” Elem’s been saying far too many unbelievable things.
“Read.” She confirms. “Us, mages, have our own personal library. Mine in particular is pretty big so I was sure there was a book about first generation nasods there.”
He still can’t believe. “Since when did you start reading about nasods?”
“Last week.”
He slumps in his chair, massaging the bridge of his nose. “You’re telling me, that you’re suddenly an expert after one week of reading.”
She puffs her chest more, “I’m a genius!”
He looks up, “I don’t understand why you try to puff your chest when there’s nothing there.”
He dutifully ignores Elem’s shouts as his dynamos push her outside the lab. “Now, out. I need some sleep,” before he slams the door shut.
Two days after that, as they finally recovered enough to talk without being groggy, Masi approaches her.
She ignores him, visibly pouting. He looks up in a moment of ‘Why am I doing this?’ before he opens his screens.
“Can you understand this?” He asks her.
“Of course, I can!” Elem answers angrily before giving a long speech about how she was so angry at him and then proceeds to point out several mistakes in the diagram he shows her. Masi’s this close to simply tuning her out but there was no one else who knows an inkling about first generation nasods.
“Are you even listening?!” She shrieks.
“Yea, yea.” Masi responds back, actively joining her angry rant. It won’t be so bad to have someone know something. He can’t always be with Eve after all. Someone who’s like him is needed so that the group can function as well as he think it can.
He briefly glances at her expression, looking away as she does so. That’s the sole reason. Nothing more.
They hang out more often actually because of that. Elem being the only one who can keep up with Masi. Rena just giggles and puts out a hand. Elsword sighs and dumps a bag of ED. With a sly smile, Rena highfives Eve. Eve nods and leaves. No one would think a queen would play matchmaker.

Mastermind groans.
His head pounds, partially to the beat from somewhere outside. And partially due to the lack of sleep. Finally deciding he’s had enough, the scientist throws off his covers and stomps up, gritting his teeth as he makes his way towards the source of the racket — straight into the testing lab.
He opens the door and barges inside, only to stop and take in the scene; Lusa standing by the door, with a holo-screen floating in front of himself, with data streaming on its surface so fast that not even Masi can make it out, and Esper floating upside down (oh, no, he’s just rotating in the lack of gravity) in a time-space rift almost the size of the whole room.
He pinches the bridge of his nose. “What, exactly, are you two idiots doing?” he asks, gathering Lusa’s attention.
The berserker turns to him with a grin, fingers tapping at the floating control in front of him idly. “Oh, good mornin’, Masi!”
“It’s a good morning when I don’t have to see you before six thirty in the morning,” Masi bites back, scowling. “So, what’s going on here?”
“Esper’s testing a new thing, he made a rift and uses it to lower his own gravity to gather enough for a sonic blast bomb,” Lusa explains, eyes peering down at the values. Obviously they’re good, because he grins and gives the time traveler a thumbs up.
Esper grins back, all jagged edges and crinkled, dark eyes. And then he reaches up, gathering the unstable energy within his palms. The ball (if it could be called that) gets bigger and bigger, pulsing sporadically, changing colors and generally looking very threatening.
Lusa’s Dynamos, which Masi didn’t even notice were present or even enabled, move up and create a barrier between them.
Esper slams the balls to the ground.
The whole room shakes at the impact; it almost knocks Masi off his feet with the force. So that’s the noise he’d been hearing.
Even the show of power does nothing to change his sour mood. “Why did you choose to do this, this early in the morning?”
Lusa chuckles awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck. “Couldn’t sleep?” It sounds more like a question than any sort of an answer.
“Well, some of us,” Masi empathizes, “could. And then they couldn’t because of you.”
“The room is soundproofed, I dunno what more we can do for you.” Lusa shrugs noncommittally.
The smoke from Esper’s test slowly clears and the rift closes, the values on Lusa’s screen telling him sooner than he can actually see it. He catches a glimpse of Esper, holding a finger to his mouth and opening a small portal to slip through. Its twin opens right behind Masi and Esper emerges with outstretched arms.
They circle Masi’s abdomen and ghost over his sides, making him almost jump out of his skin. Esper chortles behind and Lusa joins him. If he gets one of his Dynamos to take a picture of Masi’s terrified face, then that’s his, and his own business. And Esper’s, once he shows him later.
“What, missed out on your beauty sleep?” the time traveler teases.
Masi glares at him with deadly intensity, rubbing over his side. Once he calms down, his glare somehow gets even worse. “At least I am beautiful, unlike you two,” he barks.
Esper and Lusa exchange a look and then simultaneously burst out with laughter. “Oh, ohh, that’s a good one, buddy. I’ll remind you of it later,” Esper says, the twinkle in his eyes suggesting he truly means it.
“I’m sure a mirror will remind him too.”
Masi sighs. “You two are the worst. First you wake up a guy
”
“Aw, would you like us to come to bed with you and snuggle you until you fall asleep~?”
“Yeah.”
“I— what?” Esper blinks, breaking from his teasing voice.
“Sure,” Masi repeats himself, with just the same stony face, “At least you’ll be quiet.”
“I
” Esper looks at Lusa, who only shrugs, and, as if on cue, yawns. He snorts quietly. “Well, I wouldn’t really mind some rest. Keeping that portal open took a lot.”
Masi grabs Esper’s and Lusa’s wrists in one hand each, tugging them out of the lab. “Great, perfect. So shut up now,” he mutters as he drags them to his room.
Esper and Lusa share a sly look, both of their lips curled up into almost identical grins.

13 Reasons Why Soundtrack: Every Song In Season 3 | Screen Rant
Tumblr media
Here's every song on the 13 Reasons Why soundtrack for season 3. It's been over a year since 13 Reasons Why season 2 debuted on Netflix, and now season 3 has brought audiences another confounding yet still captivating story arc surrounding Clay and his group of friends and schoolmates. Of course, a new season of 13 Reasons Why means even more songs for fans to go through, which is something that's become a core aspect of the show.
While an official 13 Reasons Why soundtrack/album releases with each season, Netflix took the focus on music a step further last year when they released playlists for each character on Spotify. Everyone from Clay and Hannah to Zach and Sheri got their own customized playlists, each one filled with songs that match their personality as well as, presumably, what their characters were going through in season 2. With 13 Reasons Why season 3 now available to stream on Netflix, there are even more songs for fans to sift through.

Since there are 13 episodes in each season of 13 Reasons Why, there are certainly quite a few songs that play throughout each one. Here's every song on the 13 Reasons Why season 3 soundtrack, broken down by episode. Note that, in order to avoid spoilers, it's not listed when each song plays in the episodes.

Over the past two years, ever since 13 Reasons Why season 1 debuted in 2017, some artists and songs have seen significant boosts in their popularity due to the Netflix series. One such song was "The Night We Met" by Lord Huron, which played during a scene in season 1 in which Clay and Hannah were slow dancing. In due time, another song might become just as popular because of 13 Reasons Why, but that still remains to be seen.
Furthermore, Netflix's playlists for every 13 Reasons Why character were popular when season 2 debuted in 2018, and given that there are some new characters in season 3, it's possible the streaming service might make some new music playlists for those newcomers as well as update the existing ones for characters who are still around. While Hannah is no longer on the show, that doesn't mean things haven't changed for Clay and Justin - or Alex, for that matter. We'll just have to wait and see what songs are on the 13 Reasons Why season 4 soundtrack, but for now, fans go go through the above songs, which all play at some point in 13 Reasons Why season 3.

“‘That’? But honesty is my top quality,” Yajiro echoed, tilting his head from side to side curiously. “I’m a very honest person you know. I’m not really trying to hide anything or dodge questions, either. I’m pretty sure I’m always answering with the response that’s most true, not just with words, but with tone, format, etc. I never lie. If you want me to be more ‘straight’ with you, or more blunt, feel free to tell me to be when you ask a question. I love being ordered around~”
He grins. He can’t help but be amused by the list of boys, easily picking out who was missing. He’d gotten better with names! Thank god.
“You’re not even considering Hiroto-kun, huh? Interesting. Any reason there? And I guess I’m flattered to still be on the list~ You know, if you really want to understand me more or whatever, seriously ask me anything, tell me to answer bluntly. I can do it!!”
Seems like Yajiro really wants that. And boy, does he. Now Yajiro was amused.
“My own take, huh?” Yajiro asks, still smiling slyly. He goes down the list in the same order that Nakano had for actually descriptions.
“Hisakawa’s the blue and green bunny kid, right? Skittish, but interesting for reactions I guess. Not my type, probably, though obviously I haven’t seen all of his sides yet. Yogurt-kun isn’t actually all that smart, lol. I mean, like bookwise sure, but that’s not the most applicable kind. Views things in extremes I think, doesn’t account for grey areas, though he might try to change that now that he’s aware of it, curtesy of me~ I blew his little mind just a bit ago with his own field of dimensions, too~ Hehe~”
That had been a fun conversation. Yajiro was super passionate about philosophy.
“Moving on, Ama-kun is GREAT! Was great for reactions too, but he actually has dynamic potential that I’ve been able to work with Ahahaha~ He’s come a long way, learning some confidence now! Kuwabara-kun is awesome too, I love his narration and how he actually DOES love riddles! He plays along well! And his talent is so cute~ Still, he needs to work on being a bit more open, heh.”
Boy does Yajiro love them bois.
“Kaoru-kun is pretty interesting, I’ll give him that! But honestly he’s probably the person I’m most unsure how to go about solving, at the moment. I think I might be getting closer? I’ll just mark him as intriguing. Now MAESTRO-kun...” Yajiro grins. That pause on Nakano’s end was interesting~ “He’s pretty interesting too, and I feel like I’ve gotten to know him a lot better! In a platonic way, more, but I’ve totally gossiped with him about my past crushes. Also, P sure he and Kaoru-kun have an onofficial thing goin, which you’d know if you checked the group chat~ But feel free to persue your dreams anyways!!”
Moving on...
“I’m freakin amazing, I’d pick myself if I could, haha~ And you... are pretty entertaining, and fun to talk to. You had be actually concerned for a bit there, but you seem to be doing at least a bit better now! So I’m glad.”
A genuine looking smile was given. Then it changed back to a grin for his next statement.
“Hiroto-kun is amazingly fun to provoke~ Exactly my type for flirting, at the very least, Ehehe~! Reserved But straightforward, but if I work hard enough even he can be riled up!! Hehe~ Then my poor deceased Masie is double my flirting type and my actual liking type, hahhh...” He looks happy thinking about it though. Wistfully smiles.
