We don't normally focus so much on Joseph during Christmas. But Joseph’s daring faith in the Lord is commendable. He believed God when He revealed that Mary was chaste, though it may mean a lifetime of ridicule and scorn. That must have been truly challenging. Furthermore He accepted the Messiah as his own child and raised Him with love. (Matthew 1:18-25). Maybe you too are facing a challenge? Do you need God’s help to prevail in an overwhelming struggle? Pray for God’s wisdom and strength to help you obey Him in the midst of your struggle. With Jesus on your side you will always be an overcomer.

"For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger."

Week Two:
Matthew 1:19–21 (NIV). “Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
“We're given just a little glimpse of Mary and Joseph before Jesus was born. They lived in the hill country of Galilee. Joseph was a religious man. Mary gives every evidence of having a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures, even though she was a teenager. The Bible teaches that God was so pleased with her that He chose her to be the mother of Jesus. Mary and Joseph weren't married, and yet Mary became pregnant.
I've often put myself in Joseph's place -- imagined his thoughts, his aspirations about the girl to whom he was engaged. But Joseph decided to break the engagement privately.
While he was thinking about these things, God's angel appeared to him in a dream to give Joseph an explanation of the situation. All Joseph's suspicions were put away. He accepted what God had said through the angel, and he was immediately married to Mary.
Both Joseph and Mary followed the call and plan of God, and through their obedience the way was prepared for Christ to come and bless us.”

In the snow ...
A Tale of Advent
Snowflakes were falling as I visited one of our Advent markets.
Looked at all the big booths.
So many amazing things.
And saw an old man in a small booth with snow globes in all sizes.
"So beautiful.
May I?" I asked.
He gave me a friendly nod.
So i took one and looked at it more closely.
It seemed really old. Inside the holy couple, Mary and Joseph at the manger.
The colors still fresh.
The virgin in the dark blue dress looking at her child.
A tired smile on her lips.
A woman who had come a long way to find a safe place.
"Charming, isn't it?" He said.
"Rare to find in these days.
Reminds me of my youth."
"You are right." I replied.
"Seems they need a shelter from the cold
and i have one to offer.
So: How much do you want?"
"30 Euros."
"Don't have that much with me. Let's say - 20?"
"I give you 50. For my darling."
A voice came from behind.
A deep, dark voice that sounded like money.
And a high pitched female voice. "Oh Honey."
I turned and looked at the two.
A guy like Charles Napier, know what I mean.
And she - half his age. A schoolboys dream.
What connected them was their view of the world.
Cold and calculating.
And their warm fur coats. Must have cost a fortune.
"Hey" Said the man.
"Why you're looking at me?
Looking for trouble, i guess. Yes?
You gonna look pretty funny
trying to eat gingerbread with no teeth!"
All that in a Charles Napier tone, you know.
"Don't react." I said to myself. Just deadpan.
But inside I burst out laughing.
"OK. Then give me the ball."
Said the man
and waved a 100 Euro bill.
The dealer changed silently.
And the two left.
Heads held high.
So high they almost trampled
on a young woman standing on the corner.
A woman in a dark blue dress.
A child in her arms.
A tired smile on her lips.
Someone who had come a long way
and needed a safe place
a shelter from the cold.

Making A Memory
“…and Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart.” Luke 2:19 There was this time… My family was on vacation over the holidays, in our 1980’s Ford LTD 2 station wagon. The car began to sputter and finally died. My dad and brother took off down the road to get help in a nearby town, while my mom and I waited with the car. Miraculously, my mom got the car to start again, so we…

God of the Unexpected
God of the Unexpected
Today’s passage shows us courage and determination in both Mary and Joseph. Mary was 9 months pregnant and had to endure a journey of about 90 miles going by the safest route in their day. It would have taken days. Joseph’s concern for his pregnant wife, the hazards of travel by foot/donkey and possible dangers on the road undoubtedly filled his mind as he sought to obey the law of the land and…
