#26 - Mark of the Thief by Jennifer A. Nielsen

One Sentence Review: A fascinating and fantastic blend of history and fantasy, this book begins a series in Roman myth and culture, set in a world where it's unclear who is friend or foe and where family - found or blood - is more important than anything.

A Few More Thoughts (Spoilers):

This book is just as good as I remembered! How much I liked it was one of the only things I did remember about it, which made this reread even more fun. The story is gripping and fast-paced, the characters dynamic, and the narrator Nielsen's trademark ball of sass.

The beginning is really difficult to get through because of the horrific reality of the games.

I had completely forgotten pretty much all of the twists, so I was surprised by a lot, most notably who Radulf actually was. It's masterful how Nielsen was able to so seamlessly blend history and fantasy - the world she had built her story upon was fascinating, as were her characters.

This book reminded me that freedom is something so many of us take for granted - the ability to act, choose, and think for ourselves. But Nic's steadfast determination to do anything to secure his and his family's freedom was a reminder of how much freedom is worth to those without it.

Again, the Romans' idea of entertainment was beyond horrific.

some of the book names in pjo/hoo/toa are actually FIRE mate like. "the lightning thief" that's actually so fire???? "the titans curse"??? that's so epic bro like. that's so cool "the battle of the labyrinth"?? that would be the COOLEST band name mate "mark of athena" like. greek mythology song named that WHEN?? and ALL of the book names in Trials of Apollo? FIRE "the hidden oracle" thats so awesome like WHAT??? "the dark prophecy" fire song name "the burning maze" aidoneus song drop named that when?? "the tyrant's tomb" call your band that drop the songs and I would be your NUMBER 1 listener like thats so cool "tower of nero" fire shit mate rick you were COOKING with these names

Guess who didn't realise there was like 50 books before she started reading Percy Jackson, this girl. Anyway I'm on The sun and The stars and then I have the Kane chronicles and magnus chase then I'm free. (idk what ill do with myself)

ngl, it's about quality over quantity for me. an npc can have a total of three minutes of screen time, but if they have a cool name, they can live rent free in my head and I'll spend several hours trying to decipher drawable features from a blurry screenshot of pixels

there is a vague hint of a story here, and that's because every time I try to play thi4f, I get incredibly frustrated with how Not Fun the game play is. like, is the story good? well. but it has a PLAGUE. that should've given it instant 'I'll replay this once a year' status in my heart, but the game play sucks so bad that I've never finished it. I can't believe Not Fun gameplay beat out my obsession with narrative plagues.

anyway, the idea is basically if the original era had a game with a plague centric narrative and some other stuff I liked out of thi4f thrown into a narrative blender, with a heavy dash of horror thrown in because some parts of the thief games were scarier to me than entire dedicated horror genre games.
