Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986). The Freeling family have a new house, but their troubles with supernatural forces don't seem to be over.
Having re-watched the original only a few days ago, I was looking forward to seeing what angle they'd take the sequel and, well! It's certainly an interesting one! It's nowhere near as good, which isn't exactly uncommon with 80s sequels, and it's tendency to overshow the monstrous/the other side ruins a lot of the tension (those 80s VFX haveĀ notĀ aged well), but still, it has its moments, and it's nice to spend a little more time with theĀ family. 5/10.

The Ballad of Mulan
an anonymous work of Chinese folklore, is dated from the Northern Wei dynasty (386-534 AD), a period marked by significant Silk Road cultural exchanges and the spread of Buddhism, influenced Chinese art, music, and literature, including Mulan's tale. It was first transcribed in the 6th-century "Musical Records of Old and New" by Guo Maoqian during the Song dynasty.
The ballad embodies key Confucian principles such as Xiao (family devotion) and loyalty (zhong). Confucius (551-479 BC) was a Chinese philosopher whose teachings on ethics and proper conduct, recorded in the "Analects," have profoundly shaped Chinese culture and emphasized social harmony through respect and integrity. These values emphasize respect for family and duty to the state, which are central themes in Mulanā€™s decision to enlist in the army to protect her aging father.
UNIVERSAL TRUTHS: Filial piety, a key Confucian value, highlights the deep respect and loyalty children owe to their parents and ancestors. Today, filial piety remains crucial in modern Chinese culture, often shown by caring for elderly parents and upholding family obligations. Within your own family, do you see filial piety as a core value? Are you prepared to make personal sacrifices to benefit your family members?
Overcoming Gender barriers: The ballad illustrates that personal empowerment and heroism are not confined by gender. Similar themes appear in historical figures like Joan of Arc, who led French troops, and Deborah Sampson, who fought in the American Revolutionary War disguised as a man. The ballad of Mulan ultimately recognizes Mulanā€™s merit and contributions based on her abilities rather than her gender, advocating for the value of personal achievement and character over rigid gender stereotypes.

On October 22nd King James VI set sail for Norway to collect his bride Anne of Denmark.
The Autumn storms of 1589 were responsible for treacherous sailing conditions, but unfortunately for the women of England and Scotland, they prompted a far more dangerous consequence ā€“ a renewed fear of witchcraft.
That September, the new queen of Scotland ā€“ set sail to travel to her new kingdom. She had just married James VI via proxy, and was expected to quickly arrive in Scotland to meet her new husband.
But she did not arrive. Anneā€™s journey was a disaster ā€“ the fierce storms damaged her ship and she was forced to anchor in Norway for repairs. A second attempt to set sail was made, but her ship once again sprung a leak and returned to Norway. With winter setting in, the bad weather was expected to continue. The decision was made to postpone the journey until spring, and so Anne remained in Norway.
If history has taught us anything Scottish Kings were a randy lot, you only have to look at the disastrous journey Alexander III took to reach his Queen, ending up dead at the foot of a Fife cliff.
James was unhappy when he heard the news about the delay and unwilling to wait that long to see his bride. He made the decision to go to Norway himself to fetch his queen. Well we all know James survived the hazardous journey, once over there the celebrations of their wedding lasted months and it is said that during this time it ignited his obsession with witchcraft.
In Denmark, witches were blamed for the storms that damaged Anneā€™s ship and stopped her from travelling. A trial was held in Copenhagen in 1590, resulting in the executions of the accused women. This wasnā€™t unusual in Denmark ā€“ there had been a number of witch trials in the country during the sixteenth century.
In Scotland, witchcraft was against the law ā€“ although it mostly went unpunished before 1590. But when James arrived back in Scotland with Anne and heard the news of Denmarkā€™s witch trials, he began his own witch hunt. Witches were accused of trying to kill the king and queen, by calling up the strong storms that James and Anne had encountered returning to Scotland.
One of the accused witches was a wise woman named Agnes Sampson. Under torture, she confessed to things that were so ā€˜miraculous and strangeā€™ that even James found them difficult to believe. Allegedly, Agnes whispered to the king, telling him the words that he and Anne had spoken to each other in private on the first night of their wedding, removing any doubts James had. He said he ā€˜believed all the devils in hell could not have discovered the sameā€™. Agnes was executed. There were around seventy people accused of witchcraft during this trial ā€“ it is not known exactly how many of them were killed along with Agnes.
In 1597, James released Daemonologie, a treatise about witchcraft ā€“ although his own fervour for witch hunting seemed to have waned, the fear of witches among the population had taken hold. Large scale witch trials took place in Scotland well into the seventeenth century, and an estimated 3,000 people ā€“ who were mostly women ā€“ were accused.
Under the union of the Scottish and English crowns in 1603, Jamesā€™ work spread south, into his new kingdom.
Daemonologie laid out information such as how to identify a witch and how to punish them. One way to seek out a witch was in their use of charms and herbs: ā€˜By curing the Worme, by stemming of blood, by healing of Horse-crookes, by turning of the riddle, or doing of such like innumerable things by wordes, without applying anie thing, meete to the part offended, as Mediciners doeā€™. Women known as healers and midwives often came under suspicion because of their skills. Another way to identify a witch was to find the mark of the devil hidden somewhere on their bodies ā€“ James referenced Agnes Sampsonā€™s trial directly, describing how they shaved her head in an attempt to find her mark, eventually finding it on ā€˜her privitiesā€™.
James explained that it was mostly women who were witches as they were ā€˜frailer than man isā€™ and so were more easily entrapped in the ā€˜snares of the Devilā€™. He used the bible to support his arguments as witchcraft was ā€˜plainely prohibitedā€™, referencing Exodus 22.18: ā€˜Thou shalt not suffer a witch to liveā€™ ā€“ the only acceptable punishment for a convicted witch was death.
These guidelines were used in trials until 1727 when Janet Horne became the last woman in Britain tried and executed as a witch.
The book series, Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, uses the name Geillis Duncan for a character who is eventually involved in a witch trial, although the books are set after the last execution.

@devil-of-dagoth in response to an ask said:
the whole secrecy and "what they don't know can't hurt them" mindset is peak Tremere behavior and also what a way 2 deal with feeding guilt<3 i do have to ask tho.. sampson's trauma?? also. oh lort. a lineage like that's bound to give him problems, has he ever been in trouble w people that want to get to his sire thru him?
-
Sampson's Trauma is literally a whole ass thing. Ok you ready for an INFO DUMP ? Literal content warning for abusive relationships, drug addiction, sexual assault, fr don't read it if these topics will upset you.
Sampson was Mark's boyfriend. At some point a year or two after they started dating, Sampson got blood bound to a vampire named Vic. Vic was fucking evil. At first Sampson was just made to spy on Mark and relay information to Vic, and got his mind wiped a LOT. but then Vic started getting power hungry and lazy. he used Sampson as a blood doll and started a bsically super fucked up abusive relationship with him; sampson obviously felt like he loved him due to the blood bond but obviously he was being assaulted and, since he didn't know anything about kindred society still, was very confuesd, and still had his memory wiped all the time. it was really really really awful for him.
He wasn't telling mark wtf was going on. This went on for a year, at least, in varying levels. His memory is fuzzy ( :c ) so neither mark nor sampson are sure how long. Point is, one day mark got fed up w the lies so followed sampson. He saw sampson getting fed on from Vic. Thats when Mark got kidnapped for a month as Julius embraced him and did other weird shit.
Well from Sampson's perspective Mark disappeared, and Vic was killed for breaking the masquerade. The blood bond was thus traumatically broken, the one person who he'd consider going to about this disappeared on him, and ... yea things were bad. He released into his drug addiction to heroin, and at some point during the month Mark was gone, he lost his job, and ended up on the streets.
Mark rescued him from a trap house that was actually a Sabbat drug ring where they got blood from hopeless addicts in exchange for blood. yeah. Anywya i could continue the story, but that answers the ask about how Sampson's trauma relates to Mark: Sampson not remembering the shit that happened to him, still didn't make it less awful.
-
As for Julius. YEA LOTS OF PEOPLE HATE MARK FOR HIS SIRE. ACTUALLY THE TREMERE PRIMOGEN/REGEANT OF THE AREA FUCKING HATES JULIUS A LOT. AND THEREFORE HATES MARK. His name his Gaius. I love Gaius. Gaius does not love Mark.
And a lot of other kindred too.... its literally such a huge thing alksdjfdskj Mark gets special treatment sometimes tho because of it, for example he doesn't have to do as much grunt work for the chantry and has more freedom. But some ppl hate him for that too... so yeah.
