"What?" Atticus pulls his gaze away from the ceiling of the bar he's currently laying down in the middle of. His gaze finding Marcy standing above him. "What are you doing here?"

It's not what he meant by caring but he can't bring himself to explain. Not when Daniela's body is burning an imagine in the back of his head. His hands press together, brushing the palm of his hands together as he nods his head. "You're right." It's all he can say. He knows he's being unfair.

He knows Marcy better than that despite their differences when it came to labeling their relationship. It's not fair to make her seem like she's someone who is going to jump around for joy because someone she didn't like died.

Daniela was dead.

"I don't know what to do." It was all he could say, his gaze focusing on his hands.

She expected it. The coldness that emitted from him, the ice in his words, but that didn't make it sting any less. Her lips press together and for a moment, Marcy has a hard trouble looking at him the way he does her.

Pretend to care, Marcy wants to scoff. Did he really think she was all that heartless? That in the wake of someone he cared for—someone in general dying, that she'd put up a front? What did he expect her to do? Jump for joy? Smile while everyone who surrounded her was devastated by the news? It hurts to think, but maybe he never really knew her at all.

‟Look.. Daniela and I had our problems,” she begins, bringing her eyes back onto Atticus—trying to mask the hurt . ‟But don't ever confuse that with me being able to understand and feel everybody right now.” How could she not? They had their issues, shared distaste for one another, but Marcy never would've wanted her dead.

‟I'm just trying to look out for you .. that's all,” Marcy says, but for a moment, she feels like she shouldn't have bothered trying.

You are thirsty damn.

I got into some weird speculative-canon territory with some of these so just bear with me tbh.

Marcie:

12:  their romantic life

Marcie is probably the only sister who had an extensive/well-rounded love life at any point in her history, to be honest. She’s a romantic at heart, and very people-oriented, so on some level she definitely values at least the concept of a partner (though in reality she’s probably not prioritized the finding of one extensively, she’s a very passive “if it happens it happens” person).

Especially when she was figuring out her sexuality, Marcie probs had several girlfriends during/after high school. Nothing too serious or long term. Eventually, as she got older and felt she had more responsibilities in life both to her work and her family, she dated less. It’s definitely still a fantasy for her, but Marcie would need someone who’s capable of respecting the duties she sees herself having to her family, and someone who can ingratiate themself too and integrate well with her siblings/cousins. Otherwise it’s a no go.

Oh she’d be over the moon. Marcie is the exact kind of romantic who’d see this as the height of affection, especially if it was lengthy in prose and done on fancy paper or something. Handwritten would appeal to her over a typed letter.

Marcie was definitely an (accidental) heart breaker in high school, so she probably got a few to be honest. Karen probably helped her suss out which ones were men so that they could go in the trash so that she could offer them a polite refusal (while Karen made a murder face at them over her shoulder). 

Karen:

If I remember correctly, Karen is the only McClain sister I didn’t expressly label as queer on some level or another (mostly because I never put significant thought into her sexuality tbh), but in truth...? She’s such a goal-focused person she doesn’t really have the time to date. Her first love is her sport of choice and doing things. She’s such an active and energetic person that unless she found someone willing to balance their schedule with hers in that regard, it probably wouldn’t work out. 

She probably went on a few dates here and there in high school and college before eventually just...forgetting dating was a thing she was “supposed” to do. She’d rather be bettering herself than wasting time making small talk at coffee shops.

She’d be somewhat touched, but if she found it too florid/poetic it’d probably make her uncomfortable, and if the letter-writer never approached her she’d probably throw it away. She believes if you want something you need to go and get it, and that extends to people. She wouldn’t have much admiration for someone who pines at a distance. 

Igraine:

I actually straight up had an outline for Igraine to have a love interest in SLAOS -- a translator she met in the military -- and ended up pulling it for time due to a whole host of other shit I needed to cover in Lance’s early teenage years. So there you go I guess.

Extreme disbelief, a period of conviction that this must be for one of her sisters and got left for her by mistake, followed by an extensive manhunt for the letter-writer with a reluctant Lucas roped in to assist. 

If she couldn’t find the letter-writer, she’d probably be disappointed to be honest. What good is an admirer if you can’t chase after them?

Evie:

12:  their romantic life

You mean Evie? The aro/ace queen lol? I don’t think she’s ever had much of one. She probably went on one date to a school dance or something, recognized how distinctly uncomfortable it made her, did some research, and came to her “ah. am aro” conclusion pretty quickly. 

I doubt she experienced much disappointment in that conclusion, honestly. Their mother hardly put pressure on them to find romantic partners, and between the fact that (most of) her sisters didn’t date much, and she mostly hung around Mavis in her early high school years, who considered sexuality and relationships one part a joke and one part a manipulation tactic, she was hardly in a situation where she was the Odd One Out.

She’d be flattered, even if she clearly didn’t/couldn’t reciprocate. She’d probably seek the person out or write them a note in return expressing her appreciation of their compliments, but that she wasn’t interested in a romantic partner, period.

Loraine:

12:  their romantic life

Loraine has elements of Marcie’s romantic personality, but given she’s demiromantic and mostly hung around Lance & Hunk, Mavis, or her sisters, she didn’t really have extensive opportunities to meet anyone she might develop an attraction to. I don’t think she ever sought the opportunity out, either. She appreciated the idea but she ultimately was significantly career/goal focused, as well as family-oriented. Romantic partners just weren’t a priority.

A weird mix of flattery and discomfort. Someone saying nice things about her is always Good, but she’d feel awkward and bad about turning them down, while also more uncomfortable about the idea of trying to reciprocate. She’d have probably panicked in the face of one until Mavis contacted the person in question and told them to fuck off.

Lance:

12:  their romantic life

Uhhh I can straight up answer this in terms of canon, tbh -- 1. a fleeting affection that couldn’t work out. 2. a relationship with the capability to be incredibly healthy but complicated by the situation surrounding it (namely...Lance’s dealing w/a lot of external shit). And 3. the thing I’ve committed to endgame the story with, for better or for worse.

Much like Loraine, he’d probably be both flattered and slightly uncomfortable, most especially because of his weird situation. As “a boy” he’d probably feel much more obligated to return the sentiment, even if he didn’t necessarily feel the same way and just told himself he should. Lance likes people, he likes the idea of a relationship, and he wouldn’t want to hurt someone else’s feelings if he can help it. Which can make something...awkward, for him.

Mavis:

12:  their romantic life

Fucking terrible. Mavis’s natural reaction to romantic interest in her is suspicion/an expectation someone has ulterior motives, which makes things harder for her. It doesn’t help she also doesn’t have a good understanding of what’s healthy for her, or comfortably asserting her boundaries if she feels she owes/needs someone. Hence: Jeff.

Laughter, and then unceremoniously throwing it away. She’d feel a little bit bad about it afterward, but she’d never admit to it.

Atticus didn't really know how to explain how much he went out of his way to never talk to Daniela about his sex life. Especially when it came to Marcy. Marcy and Celeste were the only two women who came into his life that had the potential of being more than just... a maybe. He brushes his tongue across his lower lip, deciding not to talk about how his best friend could have found out about the two of them. He shoots Daniela a text message as he looks over toward the other. "I'll talk to her. That's the best I can give you, Marcy. I can't take back what damage she's done already but... that's all I can do."

The way he talks about Daniela has a slight pang of jealousy that hits Marcy. Moreso because she doesn't think she's ever had someone that knew her that well. Yeah, she had Rylan and the rest of Trouble—two people who knew more about her than she's ever let anyone else—but did they know her that well? There's also another side to it, of course, though there was no way in hell she was going to try an unbag that. Not here, not now. "That's fantastic. If that's the reason, her knowing you so damn well, then fine. Whatever." She didn't believe it, not fully, and with how apparent it was that Atticus had no intention of trying to tell her otherwise—she lets it go. No use in beating a dead horse. She said her piece and that was enough. "You're welcome," she replies back, watching his back as he walks away from her before dropping both arms down to her side. "I don't care what other people are doing. I don't need it broadcasted to the world who I'm fucking. It's my��our private life, so it should stay private."

Fish Boy with the Ocean Eyes

Lance had always loved the ocean, even if it had made him a freak.

"Ocean Boy"  "Azul"  "Water Child" "Fish Stick" were all things someone could yell in the messy McClain household and expect Lance to come scrambling down the stairs and through stacks of books and toys and sometimes sleeping nephews and nieces. He spent hours at the shore, anticipating the end of waves rushing up on the coast and swallowing his feet.  Pastel shells and a clear blue sky begged to be stared at. The smell of the family pizza shack situated on a cliff floated on top the sea breeze, tickling stranger's stomachs. The only reason he never had to beg to go was because his uncle and mother worked on the beach and he'd only have to slip in the truck bed and they'd be off, rattling and bumping over potholes and broken asphalt while he'd smile and watch out the wooden fence to the new stretch of ocean. (Mama yelled at him for that.)

Being the Spirit Guardian of the Ocean was a surprise - that Blue would pick him, not that it was the ocean. The ocean was a part of Lance's soul (literally at this point) and a part of his life.  It had been the thing to end it, and restart it, as his mother liked to say.

The story went a little like this :

Lance's older sister, Annalise, had been sent out with Lance's older brother, Denver, and six-week old Lance while their mom and uncle worked the long summer lines at the pizza shack. Annalise, who was twelve at the time, dutifully held Lance and walked down the shore, Denver dancing ahead. Her stout, pretty face and dark brown eyes narrowed when Denver would approach strangers, and she ignored baby Lance trying to gum on her long,  black pigtail. "Denver, leave the dog alone!" Stalking over, she pulled her brother away, ignored the tired smiles of the college students, and decided sitting down and giving Lance to Denver was a good idea. This way, her braids wouldn't be slobbered on, and Denver was preoccupied.  She had started drawing in the sand, when she looked up to see two imprints in the sand but no little brothers. "Denver!" She had called, looking down the shore.

To her horror,  Denver had decided teaching his baby brother to swim was on the agenda today.

She had pulled Lance, blue lipped and unmoving, from the ocean and started running for the pizza shack, Denver screaming behind her as he followed. "Mama! Mama!" She yelled, tripping up the hill and feeling her heart stall when she almost dropped her brother. "Mama!" Whirling around the tables occupied with customers, she had burst into the kitchen. "Annalise, what-" Lance's mother stopped, seeing her baby in her daughter's arm, quiet and still. "Lonzo, close the shack." That was the last time the shack had been closed. They circled around him, laying him out on the countertop. Little slips of breath had started over his small, puckered lips, but his eyes were still closed, ocean blue pools hidden behind tan eyelids.  His mother had pressed two cautious fingers to his chest and sighed when a heartbeat pushed back. "Thank God, he's fine-" and that's when Lance opened his eyes, and exploded in a mass of frills, gills, and a tail. Mama screamed.

He still had that tail.

Well, it was bigger now, but Lance was still half fish. Apparently. He was pretty sure the ocean just liked to fuck with his family, and turning him into a mermaid was just a bigger step than washing away Papa's tackle boxes and stealing Gerald's umbrellas.  At least Marcie liked to stroke his tail and call him a princess when they had tea parties, even if Lance had to wear itchy hats filled with fluff and kill all the spiders. His tail had layers of scales the color of a blue ballpoint pen, a few shades darker than the frilly fins that really looked more like someone had sewn tissue paper into his body.  Lance knew they flared to make him look bigger, but he didn't really go swimming with sharks all that often, so he found them pretty to look at, and highly sensitive, but not much else. His gills were upwards slits in his neck that he sealed over at will. Small, grayish blue scales sometimes shimmered and grew around them when he changed.

None of his "fishy" attributes were super flashy (gorgeous, but not flashy) but they were pretty big.  He had always been skinny and lanky, which didn't bode well as a mermaid who didn't want a tail span that screamed for attention. The scales and muscles for his tail crept down from his waist and were prominent at his pelvis.  His legs were centimeters shorter than his tail, but the fins were massive.  Large, elegant folds of translucent blue that he couldn't hide, even if he tried. They didn't seem abnormally big, but Lance was the only mermaid he knew, and going around asking "Hey, show me your tail so we can compare fin sizes" to strangers seemed likely to backfire. But he was pretty sure they were proportional, so he hoped no one else was a mermaid. Giant fins were a hassle in the mornings.

Giant fins, gills, and a tail were also a hassle when one was trying to live in a human society.

Don't get him wrong - Lance loved his tail, the ocean, and how well the two went together. But trying to keep a lid on his other half was hard, even when he wasn't scared.

Fear turned out to be his main trigger. Little jump scares and actual, bloodcurdling horror both made him shift instinctively, heart pounding and fins rippling. Lance just avoided most slasher flicks and scary situations. None of those in a space war, of course.

He'd been lucky, time and time again, especially when his bayard was long range and kept him from getting too close to the enemy.  Countless times, his heart would be racing and his lungs stuttering, and then he'd notice something, usually something silly and dumb, but something, and he'd remember no one could know about this particular secret. And he'd laugh it off, letting the team hear him.  This wasn't a secret you whispered to your best friend in kindergarten, giggling and kicking sand out of the sandbox. This wasn't a secret you told your better, second-try's-the charm best friend in a dimly lit hallway, stolen wine in a sippy cup. This was a secret he'd have to die with,  one he'd hold close to himself forever, one he'd learned by heart and seared into his brain. This was the secret that held Lance's freedom in it's hands, tossing it back and forth like an endless ball of yarn, a little bit unraveling each time. He was just really, really hoping that endless ball of yarn was endlessly smooth. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Remember how he had said he had many close calls?

Yeah, he's going to add this one to the list as the dumbest.

He had been going to walk past the training room when-

WHOOSH

-out tumbled a sweaty Keith Kogane inches from his feet.

Lance had definitely jumped, feeling the adrenaline and surprise rushing through his veins, and trying desperately to not turn into a fish on the boy he may just be "pining" for.

"Oh, hey Lance, sorry about this, ah-" Keith gasped out, red face turning redder. His inky hair fanned around his head, leaving him even more messy looking . He stumbled on a syllable and jerkily pushed himself up and off the floor  " The ah, training bot swung at me and I ah, kinda overcompensated dodging...."  A hand came up to rub at his neck, a habit Lance had noticed Keith picked up from him over the weeks they'd been in space.  He tried to suppress the urge to make a pleased trill his inner fish gave off.

"Hey, I guess even samurai fall down sometimes, right?" He tried, pressing the demand to fan out his fins to the back of his mind.  "Ah, yeah, I guess." Keith smiled a little abashedly, which was kinda like a new type of heart attack for Lance. The quiet hum of the castle and empty hallways left out any distractions and left Lance all too aware of how personal this encounter was. Keith wasn't usually soft in his expressions or voice, and Lance had never seen him apologize and stumble on his words.

"Well, ah, I guess, you should get back to training? I mean if you want to?" Damn his mouth.

Keith's expression started to fall, but he quickly brightened up. " I could, but I could also do with a partner. You want to train? Or just watch? " Rough and clearly chewed on fingernails tapped a nervous rhythm on Keith's thigh but he gave a bright smile.

Jesus, this boy was going to be the death of him

"What, and miss a chance to point out when you're getting your ass kicked? Never." Lance grinned impishly at Keith, slipping in side beside him, feeling his heart pound at the annoyed eye roll. "Please, more like distract me from how bad you are." And the door slid closed behind them, the boy with a fiery soul and a fascination for swords, and the fish-boy who missed home but loved the stars.
