‘I’m Still Here’ became unexpectedly timely with Brazil’s rightward shift

When Walter Salles first read the novel “I’m Still Here,” written by his childhood friend Marcelo Rubens Paiva, it took him back to his adolescence. A time when Brazil hadn’t completely lost its innocence. In 1969, after spending five years abroad, Salles and his family returned to Rio de Janeiro. Then 13, he became friends with the Paiva family’s five children. And although the country was under military dictatorship, the Paiva home, in walking distance of a paradisiacal beach, was something of a sanctuary.

“We all gravitated to that house because it was the reverse angle of what was happening in Brazil at that time,” Salles recalls. “There was free speech; we could talk about absolutely everything. Music that was censored on the radio was playing all the time on their record player. You could enter a political discussion with the parents, and then you could talk about music and whatever was happening at that time — a fascinating time because the world was being redefined at that point, and Brazil was in the opposite direction. So, somehow that house and that family was a microcosm of a country we all kind of wanted to live in.”

As depicted in Salles’ eventual film of the same title, the patriarch of the family, former Congressman Rubens Paiva, was arrested and taken in for questioning on Jan. 20, 1971. He was never seen alive again. It took his wife, Eunice Paiva, primarily portrayed by Fernanda Torres in the film, more than two decades to have his death officially recognized by a Brazilian government intent on moving forward.

“As we were developing [the movie], the zeitgeist changed completely, and we were faced with the rise of the extreme right-wing in Brazil,” Salles says. “And their discourse was, ‘Let’s go back to a wonderful time of the military dictatorship.’ And there we were suddenly realizing that we were making, yes, a film about our past, but at the same time we were making a film about the present — what we were experiencing in every discussion on every street corner.”

It took Salles and his creative partners seven years and at least 28 versions of the script before they were confident to begin production. The film eventually premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival and was selected as Brazil’s international feature Oscar submission. Salles immediately informs the viewer of the political context of the story: The menacing threat of the authoritarian regime is there in the very first image, a shot of a woman, Eunice Paiva, swimming in the ocean.

“It could be paradise, but then there’s a military helicopter flying over her, and that helicopter is menacingly low, and it shouldn’t be,” Salles says. “So, there’s something from the very beginning that is kind of destabilizing and that somehow echoes through the first 30 minutes of the film here and there. That scene for us was always a little equivalent of a Greek omen at the beginning of an Aeschylus tragedy. The birds, the vultures are circling.”

Salles lost touch with the Paivas after they left Rio in the early 1970s. Marcello’s novel triggered a desire for Salles to revisit that era — in this case, with the story of a broken family and a matriarch who had to reinvent herself to give her children any sort of future. The filmmaker calls it a “microcosm of humanity during a time of turmoil.” And, along with his celebrated films such as “Central Station” and “The Motorcycle Diaries,” it was another opportunity to share the collective journey of a country through the individual stories of its people.

“I didn’t know all the layers of the story, and I didn’t know the extent to which this woman had managed to reinvent herself, had somehow found manners to erode an autocratic government using very specific weapons,” Salles says. “So, the book was fundamental in allowing me in. And then the whole family was very supportive during those years and sent so much information, so many photographs. And this is what allowed me metaphorically to reopen that house. I felt invited to reopen that house.”

Along with screenwriters Murilo Hauser and Heitor Lorega, Salles embraced the fact that Eunice Paiva was a woman full of steely resolve but also internal contradictions. She never allowed herself or her family to be photographed by the government without a smile. She never allowed the government or the press to see her children crying.

“This is a woman who was fueled by extraordinary inner strength, who also could say words that were very poignant and, at the same time, appear to be restrained,” Salles notes. “She’s like a volcano that is always near eruption but actually does not erupt. There’s always something bubbling inside of her that she somehow restrained. There’s something really extraordinary and heroic in her confrontation with that regime. But on the other hand, it was so tough for her kids to actually have a mother who never truly shared what happened to their father. She never articulated that in a clear manner, thus depriving them of the possibility to get to closure on that.

“As Fernanda Torres says, ‘In tragedy, you don’t cry; you have to confront, you take in and then you react.’ And this is what she did. And with an extraordinary inner strength, but a great ambivalence as well.”

"Summer of Superman" Details Released

DC Comics has dropped more info in its "Summer of Superman" publishing initiative for 2025, celebrating Superman's legacy.

The key titles for the "Summer of Superman" are Action Comics, Superman, and Superman Unlimited. Other titles in the "Summer of Superman" include Summer of Superman Special #1, Superman: The World, and Superman's Good Guy Gang. Also, April 18, 2025, marks Superman Day, with it's own list of curated titles.

Summer of Superman Special #1 from Dan Slott, Mark Waid, Joshua Williamson, and Jorge Jiménez is an oversized issue that will tell a story in three acts. "The wedding of Lana Lang and John Henry Irons (a.k.a. Steel) serves as the backdrop for an outpouring of love and support from family and friends. However, their big day will also be big trouble, as threats from the past, present and future will spawn major new conflicts for the Superman family." (DC Comics)

Summer of Superman Special #1 goes on sale on April 16, 2025, and features a main cover by Jorge Jiménez and variant covers by Alexander Lozano, John Giang, Mahmud Asrar, Dan Jurgens, and Chrissie Zullo-Uminga.

Action Comics #1085, from G. Willow Wilson and Gavin Guidry, has Lois Lane sending Superman "to a scientific outpost in the Arctic to investigate a new technology that promises to halt global warming. But when Superman arrives, he quickly finds out that the outpost has been plagued by a villain who plans to melt humanity’s hopes for survival.

Action Comics #1085, featuring a main cover by Brad Walker and variant covers by Davide Paratore, Cully Hamner, and Danny Earls, goes on sale on April 9, 2025.

Superman #25 is an oversized issue from writer Joshua Williamson and artists Dan Mora, Eddy Barrows, and Eber Ferreira that celebrates the last two years of Superman. The issue will connect to Summer of Superman Special #1 and will set up a new storyline. Superman and Superwoman are recovering from their encounters with Time Trapper and Doomsday when Lex Luthor returns ready to fight for control of Supercorp and Metropolis.

Superman #25 goes on sale on April 23, 2025. The issue sports a wraparound cover by Dan Mora, variant covers from Guillem March, Jeff Dekal, Rafael Grassetti, Dave Johnson, Laura Braga, and Fico Ossio, and an April Fools' Day variant cover from Dan Hipp.

Superman Unlimited is a new comic book series from Dan Slott, Rafael Albuquerque, and Marcelo Maiolo. An asteroid showers the globe with Kryptonite. "Intergang, under new leadership, is on the rise, with practically all their foot soldiers carrying at least one clip of Kryptonite bullets on them. The asteroid left massive Kryptonite deposits to be mined, and it houses unlimited horrors yet to be unpacked. To survive, Superman will need to forge new alliances, new tech and new tactics if he hopes to carry on his quest for truth, justice and a better tomorrow!" (DC Comics)

Superman Unlimited #1, featuring a main cover by Rafael Albuquerque and Marcelo Maiolo, goes on sale on May 21, 2025.

Superman: The World follows in the same vein as Batman: The World and Joker: The World as creators from across the globe highlight the Man of Steel. Dan Jurgens and Lee Weeks will be joined by 15 international creators.

Superman: The World goes on sale on June 24, 2025.

Superman's Good Guy Gang is a multivolume graphic novel series for early readers ages 5-7 from Rob Justus. Eight-year-old Clark Kent and his friends Hawkgirl and Green Lantern Guy Gardner become friends, start a club, "test their abilities, grow together and maybe even earn some good guy points along the way." (DC Comics)

Superman's Good Guy Gang #1 goes on sale on July 1, 2025.

Botanical Garden researchers discover rare tree in Rio

A new species of fruit tree has been found in the area of the Pedra de Itaocaia Municipal Natural Monument, in the municipality of Maricá, in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. The discovery of Siphoneugena carolynae, a “close relative” of the jabuticaba trees, was made by Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden researchers Thiago Fernandes and João Marcelo Braga.

The study reveals that this 7-meter-tall tree is unique in the world. According to researcher Thiago Fernandes, only one specimen of the species has been identified so far.

“It’s the 13th species of the Siphoneugena genus known so far. We collected it while the fruit was still green, so we haven’t seen the ripe fruit yet. However, we expect it to be similar to jabuticabas (Plinia genus), given their close relationship,” states the Botanical Garden study.

Thiago Fernandes noted that the region has attracted the interest of naturalists since the 19th century, including Charles Darwin. The British naturalist, geologist, and biologist visited the area in 1832 and stayed at the historic Fazenda Itaocaia, the very site where the species was discovered.

A Comissão de Fiscalização e Controle da Câmara dos Deputados aprovou hoje (31) a convocação do ministro da Defesa, general Walter Braga Neto, para prestar esclarecimentos sobre compras com supostos indícios de superfaturamento pelas Forças Armadas. O requerimento, previa a convocação do ex-titular da pasta Fernando Azevedo e Silva, mas foi aprovado com o adendo de supressão do nome, uma vez que o general deixou o comando da pasta e foi substituído pelo general Walter Braga Netto na segunda-feira (29). Na comissão, o general deve prestar esclarecimentos sobre o processo de compras de produtos como picanha, cerveja, bacalhau, filé, salmão e carvão vegetal, entre outros, para as Forças Armadas, com indícios de superfaturamento. Com a aprovação, o novo ministro terá até 30 dias para comparecer no colegiado, após receber o ofício de convocação. Diferentemente da modalidade de convite, que pode ser recusada sem que, por isso, haja qualquer sanção; a convocação é obrigatória. Caso não compareça, o ministro poderá responder por crime de responsabilidade. Convites A comissão aprovou ainda o convite para que o ministro da Economia, Paulo Guedes, preste esclarecimentos sobre as distorções em dados da Previdência apontadas pelos técnicos do Tribunal de Contas da União (TCU). Outra comissão da Câmara, a de Relações Exteriores e Defesa Nacional, também quer ouvir o novo ministro da Defesa. O colegiado aprovou, nesta quarta-feira, um convite para que Braga Netto fale sobre as prioridades da Pasta para o ano de 2021. Além de Braga Netto, a comissão também aprovou convites para ouvir os ministros das Relações Exteriores, embaixador Carlos Alberto Franco França, para falar sobre as prioridades da pasta para 2021; e do Gabinete de Segurança Institucional, general Heleno, para tratar sobre a atividade de inteligência institucional no Brasil e no mundo. O nome do ministro das Relações Exteriores também consta em outro requerimento aprovado pelo colegiado, com convite para que, ao lado dos ministros da Saúde, Marcelo Queiroga; da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação, Marcos Pontes; e representantes da Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) e do Instituto Butantan, falem sobre o atual estágio da produção de vacinas no Brasil e as iniciativas diplomáticas e comerciais para a ampliação da oferta de vacinas no país.

Paisagens em Pedaços

Inaugurando a programação das sextas-feiras, ao longo do mês de agosto o Canteiro apresentará, no estúdio, a mostra de vídeos Paisagens em Pedaços, como parte da exposição "A Fonte deságua na Floresta", que acontece na Residência Fonte e comemora os 10 anos do espaço. 

Essa série de nove vídeos foram produzidos por artistas que frequentaram ateliês ou participaram de residências no Fonte. Serão expostos trabalhos de Adrián Balseca (Equador), Carla Chaim (Brasil), Celina Portella (Brasil), Nani Lamarque (Argentina), Nino Cais (Brasil), Marcelo Amorim (Brasil), Pilar Quinteros (Chile), Rodrigo Braga (Brasil) e Simone Moraes (Brasil). Todos os vídeos têm como ponto de partida a paisagem e o entorno, abordando aspectos políticos e sociais em contextos específicos da América Latina. Eles mostram as experiências dos artistas na contemplação de cenas e sugerem sensações táteis envolvendo o ambiente urbano e natural.
