I didn't know Jumbo Miyamoto would be retiring minutes later when I started this match. AJW is especially bittersweet that way, rocketing its stars up to the moon only for them to retire a few short years later. Jumbo jumps Maki with incredible ferocity the moment the bell rings. It took me until she finally lost control to realize she was smaller than Maki, because she throws her body around with such force that it makes her seem two times bigger than she is. And then they do the retirement ceremony right there in the ring after she loses. She goes from an angry heel to a crying young woman in a whiplash. She's a legendary figure in AJW history, with most of the tag reigns and a 10 year career. This was my first impression of her.

Maboroshi
Tumblr media
Movies watched in 2024
Maboroshi (2023, Japan)
Director & Writer: Mari Okada
Mini-review:
I was really curious about this movie, since Mari Okada has written and/or directed some pretty amazing stories, and the promotional materials and trailers looked very interesting. However, I can't say I liked it as much as I expected. I did love how ambitious the film is in terms of concept and themes, and the animation definitely lives up to the Mappa standard. In particular, the final act includes some truly stunning visuals. Unfortunately, I just couldn't connect with these characters, and I didn't find any of them likeable or interesting. Therefore, this movie doesn't even come close to the emotional wallop delivered by the ending of Okada's previous directorial work, the beautiful Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms. So yeah, Maboroshi is well-made, but rather disappointing.

This is the Beauty Pair at the peak of their fame. The camera cuts every few minutes to long rows of color coordinated girls in the audience. It doesn't really need to, because you can always hear them cheering or more often screaming their displeasure. Mami Kumano is a masterful heel, never satisfied with just keeping the advantage. Her every move is calculated outrage, and she's obsessed with adding hair pulling to every move. Monster Ripper (Bertha Faye) is a breath of fresh air, debuting in this match and starting a long career. She's not ready to hit anyone hard but she feels like a real threat. Something I love about AJW is that everyone is allowed to be angry. It's the default state of every fight. The pain and humiliation boils inside the wrestlers and effortlessly overflows. Whereas in modern joshi, the things these wrestlers do would be part of a grudge match. So yes, the Beauty Pair attack them outside, do nail rakes, and refuse to let go when their opponents reach the ropes. All that pent up frustration getting released when Jackie does her powerful slams and suplexes at the end feels so fucking good.
