So apparently Madou 4 takes place in the future, that is why Carbuncle is with Fia and not Arle. As a Schezo fan that just leaves me with a very important question.

Did the Dark Mage Curse get passed on?

Look I know this seems in bad taste, from what I've seen the games looks like a very kindhearted slice of life dungeon crawling adventure, and deep down I want the curse to die with Schezo. But come on, it's a madou game made by a combination of Sonic Team/Compile Hearts with help from Kenji Oda, is it wrong for me to think the curse kept on going?

So uh...Yeah, I know I'm seriously late to the party when it comes to this stuff, but I realized that this was mostly done and it was in drafts, so I might as well post it. This might just be filler for the big post, but enjoy nevertheless. ----

Madou 4 is... looking pretty cool, I'm not gonna lie. Really enjoying the art direction they're going for. And the designs of the characters? Amazing.

Like genuinely, even if it doesn't get an official English release, I'm down to watch and learn about it.

Even the screenshot of the overworld is very charming to boot.

I heard a pal say "It looks like Gen 6 of Pokémon" and I could see it, but we'll have to wait and see for the true experience of this game.

I'll make what I think of the characters a Read More thing. Imo, looking amazing.

Fia:

The newest silly girl on the block. Besides me thinking that Witch finally got her name chosen, I genuinely love the design they went for, since small hats are peak character designs.

Apparently she's a bit of an airhead and I'm all for it. Let her get involved into dumb stuff because she's dense and clueless and stupid. We love that in this world.

Will:

Tbh, besides the whole crop top thing he has, I absolutely dig the design and color choices they went for. And also excluding the fact that his name is Will in a fantasy game, I do find it curious that he has a twin brother, Roy, who's apparently a teacher.

Oh, and since this is making headlines: Apparently he's got a mix of Lagnus and Rulue in him. So he HAS to be peak.

Leena:

I really dig the design, I won't deny it, somehow they made almost all blue look really, really nice. The site says that she's calm and collected, but struggles with speaking to people, which I will most likely hope is just her being shy to talk to people, rather than the whole "She just sounds like a pervert," like Schezo does.

She also apparently reads a lot, if the glasses and the shy personality didn't point at her being quite the reader. So with that, she might be peak.

Totto:

Green mage with white hair that covers the eye? Where have I seen that before... Jokes aside, he does open his eyes compared to someone we do know, and he's pretty different. According to the site, he's someone with a lotta info...you just gotta pay the dude for it. So like Anna from Fire Emblem.

Also apparently, there's some promise he made to someone? Who knows about it for now?

Eska:

Now this design is pretty unique, yellow and white with pink eyes is an interesting choice of coloring they went for. I genuinely like what they went for with her, AND she's half dragon? I wonder what they're gonna go with her.

She gains interest to Fia (It google translates to Fear, so uh...yeah.) after the start of the game, and she doesn't really have common sense, which is gonna be interesting.

Roy:

Besides the fact that he is NOT our boy this time around, Roy is Will's twin brother who went the teacher route in life rather than the hero route. He's basically the antithesis of Will; Cool-headed and prefers to be realistic to Will's optimism.

Also, I think he visually looks better than Will, but eh, that could change in due time.

And finally, Jurk:

Besides his kinda bad name IMO, I like his design a lot. A guy who simply travels the world is always a fun concept in any game, and his design is honestly one of the best I've seen from the game. He's also friends with the headmaster of the school, which could be interesting.

My main concern is the person he tags along with, Mew. She's probably going to be an alright character, but I don't have super high hopes of that. Plus, her design isn't selling me at all, it just doesn't look right.

But yeah, those are (at least for now), my honest thoughts for the game RN. Maybe when more is covered and shown off sometime. But that'll be all for today.

Madou Monogatari Fou-- I mean, Fia, is out

After a long wait and a delay, originally being planned for summer release, Madou Monogatari: Fia and the Mysterious School, is finally out.

Well, did they use the delay to polish everything out? Ehhhh…

It seems that in terms of character and story, the game is solid and a lot better than Sorcery Saga/Sei Madou Monogatari. Gameplay and UI wise, according to Japanese Amazon reviews and tweets… the game is a mixed bag, which is typical for Idea Factory.

I've seen one person say that the gameplay feel, it's actually better than the Saturn game. I dunno how much I believe that, and I'm the biggest critic of the Madou Saturn game, to a nitpicky degree.

A lot of the tweets I've seen on Twitter I refuse to call it X seem to be pretty critical of the gameplay outside of Compile Heart's QRT circle. But other than that, it seems to have a much warmer reception than Sei Madou. (people seem to love Momomo out of all the returning characters)

I think this YouTube comment I found on a Japanese review video perhaps sums up the biggest issue with the game:

Next to not having a PC release. The game goes for the same price as Dragon Quest 3's HD remake and Romancing SaGa 2. Of course, while it's not fair to compare Compile Heart's low budget games to Square Enix, the Japanese equivalent to over $50 is pretty steep…

Gameplay wise, I'm happy to see that compared to Idea Factory's past games, that it's much easier, not grind hefty or DLC padded at all! Good on them for listening.

I'm also glad that the characters are good and there don't seem to be any elements commonly present in Idea Factory's other games (afaik). Hell, even old Compile was guilty of using assault for comedic purposes, so I can agree with the one reviewer- Fia's Mysterious School is better than Madou Saturn in that department.

Seems like the fishing element has also been criticized. I wonder when devs will realize that fishing mini games are more annoying than good? :P

Is it worth buying? I think if we want more of the characters, then yes, get it… on a sale. $50 is too much for an Idea Factory game (I bought my games from them for $20 and under). Unless they give you collector's stuff with it, that's absolutely worth the steep price.

Honestly, the fact that the highest praise I've seen is for the characters and story makes me wish that this had been a visual novel instead. Idea Factory is quite good at making otome games, and that could have been easily channeled for a Madou game with elements akin to Serilly's Happy Birthday.

Iiiii don't see this getting a western release for almost a year, if they even wanna localize it to the west? Who knows. Cheers to people enjoying the game, apologies to the people who aren't if it didn't meet expectations.

I will say that it is weird that for some reason- and I don't know why- no one has made a proper Madou Monogatari successor with either the OG 123 and ARS in mind, or with the SFC and Sega Saturn game in mind.

It would be nice to have a modern era game that looks like this, pardon my extremely crude MSX style mock-up-

Publisher Compile Heart and developer Sting have released the second official trailer and four system trailers for Madou Monogatari: Fia and the Mysterious School.

Dungeon

Gimmicks – Dungeons are loaded with various gimmicks. Learn their traits and overcome them!

New Monsters – Various new and distinct monsters appear in this game. But do not let their unique appearances deceive you, otherwise you will be the one in pain. Learn each monster’s unique traits and take them on in battle.

Timeline – During battle, you can freely move around to evade enemy attacks or keep enemies within attack range, and when the timeline in the upper-right corner of the screen reaches the left edge, you can select an action from “Skills” or “Items.”

Fuzzy Parameters – Your party’s facial expressions are displayed on the left side of the screen. You will be able to tell their current HP by their expressions. If their status changes, an icon for that change will appear alongside their expression.

Skills and Fever – By consuming MP, you can use skills such as recovery and attack-based moves. Additionally, by using skills and amassing elemental orbs, you can enter the “Fever” state.

Grand Sorcery – By consuming the elemental orbs you have amassed, you can use a special move called “Grand Sorcery.” The Grand Sorcery that can be used changes based on the attributes of the orbs.

Grimoire

Grimoire – By completing lessons and assignments at the school of sorcery, you can learn the sorcery written in in the “Grimoire” coursebook. Learn a lot of spells and power up!

Advancement Exams – Once you have earned the amount of credits required to move up to the next level, you can take an advancement exam in the principal’s office. By passing the exam, you will be able to learn stronger sorcery.

Photo Mode

Photo Mode – In Photo Mode, you can set up the characters in various situations and take photographs.

Original Stamps – The characters from the game also appear as original stamps. Use as many as you like to get that perfect shot!

I don't know if I've said it before but I'm really excited for Fia and the Mysterious School. And every new thing showcased so far is only making me more excited, God I hope they localize this game.

The reason I'm so excited for this game is:

The Gameplay look so fun and I wanna play it.

While this is purely speculation, I really wanna know the story and lore of this game. From what I've heard they are being supervised by SEGA so that the story falls in line with the current Madou/Puyo timeline without causing issues. I don't know if it's true or not but if it is, I wanna know what they do with it. Because depending on what they do, this chart I made might be accurate.

(If this chart is in anyway true, Shoutout to Satan for finally deciding to reincarnate with his friends because if he decided to stay for a THIRD time, that's just sad on his part.)

Madou Monogatari: Fia and the Mysterious School, formerly Madou Monogatari 4, will launch for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Switch on November 28 in Japan for 8,580 yen, the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu reveals. A limited edition will also be available for 17,380 yen, which includes an art book, CD, acrylic diorama, and card game, among other bonuses.

Published by Compile Heart and developed by Sting in cooperation with D4 Enterprise, with participation by former Compile staff, Madou Monogatari: Fia and the Mysterious School features a game cycle of life in a school of sorcery, command-based battles in automatically-generated 3D dungeons, and character development through a grimoire skill tree.
