Google is going to start scraping all of their platforms to use for AI training. So, here are some alternatives for common Google tools!

Google Chrome -> Firefox

If you’re on tumblr, you’ve probably already been told this a thousand times. But FireFox is an open-source browser which is safe, fast and secure. Basically all other browsers are Chrome reskins. Try Firefox Profilemaker, Arkenfox and Librewolf! Alternatively, vanilla Firefox is alright, but get Ublock Origin, turn off pocket, and get Tabliss.

Google Search -> DuckDuckGo

DuckDuckGo very rarely tracks or stores your browsing data (though they have only been known to sell this info to Microsoft). Don’t use their browser; only their search engine. Domain visits in their browser get shared. Alternatively, you can also use Ecosia, which is a safe search engine that uses its income to plant trees! 🌲

Google Reverse Image Search -> Tineye

Tineye uses image identification tech rather than keywords, metadata or watermarks to find you the source of your image!

Gmail -> ProtonMail

All data stored on ProtonMail is encrypted, and it boasts self-destructing emails, text search, and a commitment to user privacy. Tutanota is also a good alternative!

Google Docs -> LibreOffice

LibreOffice is free and open-source software, which includes functions like writing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, formula editing and more.

Google Translate -> DeepL

DeepL is notable for its accuracy of translation, and is much better that Google Translate in this regard. It does cost money for unlimited usage, but it will let you translate 500,000 characters per month for free. If this is a dealbreaker, consider checking out the iTranslate app.

Google Forms -> ClickUp

ClickUp comes with a built-in form view, and also has a documents feature, which could make it a good option to take out two birds with one stone.

Google Drive -> Mega

Mega offers a better encryption method than Google Drive, which means it’s more secure.

YouTube -> PeerTube

YouTube is the most difficult to account for, because it has a functional monopoly on long-form video-sharing. That being said, PeerTube is open-source and decentralized. The Internet Archive also has a video section!

However, if you still want access to YouTube’s library, check out NewPipe and LibreTube! NewPipe scrapes YouTube’s API so you can watch YouTube videos without Google collecting your info. LibreTube does the same thing, but instead of using YouTube servers, it uses piped servers, so Google doesn’t even get your IP address. Both of these are free, don’t require sign-ins, and are open source!

What objections would you actually accept to AI?

Roughly in order of urgency, at least in my opinion:

Problem 1: Curation

The large tech monopolies have essentially abandoned curation and are raking in the dough by monetizing the process of showing you crap you don't want.

The YouTube content farm; the Steam asset flip; SEO spam; drop-shipped crap on Etsy and Amazon.

AI makes these pernicious, user hostile practices even easier.

Problem 2: Economic disruption

This has a bunch of aspects, but key to me is that *all* automation threatens people who have built a living on doing work. If previously difficult, high skill work suddenly becomes low skill, this is economically threatening to the high skill workers. Key to me is that this is true of *all* work, independent of whether the work is drudgery or deeply fulfilling. Go automate an Amazon fulfillment center and the employees will not be thanking you.

There's also just the general threat of existing relationships not accounting for AI, in terms of, like, residuals or whatever.

Problem 3: Opacity

Basically all these AI products are extremely opaque. The companies building them are not at all transparent about the source of their data, how it is used, or how their tools work. Because they view the tools as things they own whose outputs reflect on their company, they mess with the outputs in order to attempt to ensure that the outputs don't reflect badly on their company.

These processes are opaque and not communicated clearly or accurately to end users; in fact, because AI text tools hallucinate, they will happily give you *fake* error messages if you ask why they returned an error.

There's been allegations that Mid journey and Open AI don't comply with European data protection laws, as well.

There is something that does bother me, too, about the use of big data as a profit center. I don't think it's a copyright or theft issue, but it is a fact that these companies are using public data to make a lot of money while being extremely closed off about how exactly they do that. I'm not a huge fan of the closed source model for this stuff when it is so heavily dependent on public data.

Problem 4: Environmental maybe? Related to problem 3, it's just not too clear what kind of impact all this AI stuff is having in terms of power costs. Honestly it all kind of does something, so I'm not hugely concerned, but I do kind of privately think that in the not too distant future a lot of these companies will stop spending money on enormous server farms just so that internet randos can try to get Chat-GPT to write porn.

Problem 5: They kind of don't work

Text programs frequently make stuff up. Actually, a friend pointed out to me that, in pulp scifi, robots will often say something like, "There is an 80% chance the guards will spot you!"

If you point one of those AI assistants at something, and ask them what it is, a lot of times they just confidently say the wrong thing. This same friend pointed out that, under the hood, the image recognition software is working with probabilities. But I saw lots of videos of the Rabbit AI assistant thing confidently being completely wrong about what it was looking at.

Chat-GPT hallucinates. Image generators are unable to consistently produce the same character and it's actually pretty difficult and unintuitive to produce a specific image, rather than a generic one.

This may be fixed in the near future or it might not, I have no idea.

Problem 6: Kinetic sameness.

One of the subtle changes of the last century is that more and more of what we do in life is look at a screen, while either sitting or standing, and making a series of small hand gestures. The process of writing, of producing an image, of getting from place to place are converging on a single physical act. As Marshall Macluhan pointed out, driving a car is very similar to watching TV, and making a movie is now very similar, as a set of physical movements, to watching one.

There is something vaguely unsatisfying about this.

Related, perhaps only in the sense of being extremely vague, is a sense that we may soon be mediating all, or at least many, of our conversations through AI tools. Have it punch up that email when you're too tired to write clearly. There is something I find disturbing about the idea of communication being constantly edited and punched up by a series of unrelated middlemen, *especially* in the current climate, where said middlemen are large impersonal monopolies who are dedicated to opaque, user hostile practices.

Given all of the above, it is baffling and sometimes infuriating to me that the two most popular arguments against AI boil down to "Transformative works are theft and we need to restrict fair use even more!" and "It's bad to use technology to make art, technology is only for boring things!"

Tired Webcomic Creator Noises

Gags … ah yes lets make art into mindless content spat out by Ai cos we've been literally killing creators with inhumane workloads to spit out as many episodes as possible for mindless consumption.

I make my comics with passion and love of the craft! I have a degree in Comics, I spent years...years learning, practising, experimenting, adapting. I recall the days where you may get a page a week, or a few at the start of the month back in the 2000s era of self hosted webcomics and smackjeeves. (Rant below)

I've had to learn how the whole scrolling format worked to adapt to where all the readers had gone to, having been taught the traditional print page formats. And now cos its suddenly a massive money maker for these few hosts and they've pushed creators to the brink with the sheer volume they want pumped out that of course they want to use AI.

But it will speed up colouring! I have multiple tools available by the software I use and made by the wonderful people who love creating that colouring isn't that much of a chore, Its my fav part honestly. And its also a job sector within comics, colourists are skilled artists and this is another way to trim the fat, to pocket more money and keep churning out the 5th millionth villainess story.

Yes I am in most views a tiny creator, I haven't even broken their 1000 sub goal to even try applying for ad rev in the near 5 ish years on webtoon. But what I make I love, I spend hours researching folklore, scripting, drafting the whole kabudle like many other creators. And other than the kind supporters on my Patreon and Ko-fi I don't make much from the hours, days, weeks I pour into what I make. But at least I know its made with my own hands. That its made with love as corny as that sounds.

Ai is creeping its tentacles into everything, now ethically trained ai tools to help smaller creators would be fine. Most creators already rely on 3d tools to speed up things like backgrounds for webcomics. But when we don't know what its trained on, and is marketed wholesale as something anyone can use to make "content" is where it gets insidious. I am all for anyone with the desire to create and tell a story to go out there and do so, whether a beginner or a master. Part of the joy of a long running webcomic is seeing the artist grow both artistically and literary. But with ai it will be all one homogenous style, a copy of what ever is the hot thing. We already have amazon stuffed to the teeth with ai generated books, videos, merch and more all to be sold in some get rich quick manner. (need I point at the Willy's Wonderland incident). Youtube videos being spat out by faceless accounts stealing and regurgitating content at the speed no human video making team can easily match without cutting out quality or fact checking.

It is tiring. Creatives as a whole are treated poorly for decades, and now with the rapid late stage capitalism, website /social media enshitification and the blind headlong rush into the next big money making thing (watches the nft crash). I can't deny Covid sped this up, as everyone was locked inside and turned to what we creators made for comfort. But that content eating boom, lead to more demand, faster output and tighter budgets. We are seeing journalists being cut, game designers in their thousands and recently Dreamworks cutting a bunch and pushing to make their Robot film come out sooner due to public demands.

Skilled creatives are being treated like disposable fast food restaurant employees. Used til they burn out, get injured and even die! And then are simply replaced.

I've never been a creator with huge ambitions to work at places like DC, Marvel or Top Cow. I simply wished to create and share stories with the world, to bring smiles, to create art that evokes emotions, inspires others to look around themselves and create too.

Art is for everyone. You just need to take that scary jump, there is a whole array of welcoming communities willing to teach and share. I wouldn't have improved so much without the kindness of the webcomic groups I've discovered and learnt from. Everyone is always learning, and there no shame in not knowing how to do a thing. Even I started with the cheesy how to draw books as a kid and made my own pokemon and digimon.

Don't let the world treat your art as content. It is "ART" as much as what's kept in the louvre is seen as art, so is that little stick man doodle on a postit.

So Try something new, try a new material, a new style.

And support the artists you enjoy, tip their Ko-Fi, pledge to their Patreon, buy a sticker or print. Share their posts and tell them what you love about what they make.

On Plagiarism in Fandom

AKA the For Want of a Nail Situation

Please Note: This is Not A Witch Hunt. Do not Harass, Attack, or otherwise attempt to cause harm to the people mentioned in this list. This post is just to highlight and bring awareness to the plagiarism and pattern of behavior within the community, and to see where we should go from here.

On Plagiarism Itself

At the end of 2023, it seemed that the topic of plagiarism on the internet garnered a renewed vigor following the four-hour HBomberguy video on YouTube Plagiarism. The video was extremely well researched, calling out several instances of plagiarism on the site, and spent nearly half it's run time discussing the egregiousness of one specific content creator, James Somerton. Which I found interesting.

During the time of that video's release, coincidentally, in the academic world several high-profile academics – such as the ex-President of Harvard and former MIT professors – began facing their own allegations of plagiarism and improperly sourcing Wikipedia for their massive papers. There, of course, are several other instances of plagiarism in the publishing/book world.

Lauren M. Davis falsely accused a fellow author of plagiarism and faced the backlash for it (amongst other serious issues, but it started with the plagiarism.) Mark Dawson is currently facing accusations of plagiarism in several of his 20+ works. If you go back you can find a multitude of instances where plagiarism has been called out, and consequences are faced the perpetrators.

I only mention these instances as a baseline to frame that both creatively and academically – plagiarism is frowned upon. Plagiarism isn't just stealing money out of the pockets of others – this is a story about fan fiction. We don't get paid. BUT at the end of the day, many fanfics are so extensively planned, written over the course of hours, days, months, even years. And these authors are dedicated to this hobby that they provide for free. It's so important to emphasize that these people are sharing their own ideas, thoughts, wants, and passion with people.

Which is why it's so disappointing when people steal these words to pass off as their own.

Archive Of Our Own, the largest platform for sharing fanfiction on the internet, provides tools to acknowledge other creators. Some people put their inspiration as hyperlinks in their Summary section, so it appears before you even click into the work. AO3 offers a section, when you upload, to denote if you've remixed, translated, or received inspiration from another work, which many authors use! Some even put their reference to their newest works in the end notes of their fics, especially if a specific section relies heavily on the source work material.

So there's no excuse to not reference the source material. There's no excuse to not give credit to the original work of others.

I think, as a fandom, it's important to credit other authors. Not only does it help to cultivate the culture – helping others find works they might not have found otherwise - but it's just the right thing to do. If we wouldn't accept this from YouTubers, Authors, or literally any other hobbyist in the world, why would we accept it from our friends or peers in the fandom space? If it's enough to vilify someone else, why would we make excuses for the person next to us?

Recently, with the growing trend of AI and its plagiaristic uses, fandom has more and more been calling out the use of AI. It is, afterall, essentially stealing works for other people to just mishmash into something uncanny. "AI Art" get's a lot of heat and push back from fandom spaces. In fact, in the Namori fandom, there have been several instances of resistance again AI-generated fanart. Bc people inherently realize the theft and degradation of someone else's work.

I think it's important to hold ourselves to the same standard as everyone else. If we're going to bash someone for using AI or stealing art – how is fanfic different? How is it different to use a machine that steals and repurposes art, versus using your own pen? Personally, there is no difference. Because at the end of the day, we're spitting in the faces of the people who have spent countless hours, days, months, and years honing their work. Even if it's just a single line, stealing work is to say "I don't care enough about this medium to put the work in."

If you love something, and you feel passionate about it, the work necessary to create your fan or original work is something you're willing to do. For every line. If you're passionate about something, you wouldn't want to diminish it's light.

I could not, in one post, talk about every single fan author who has ever plagiarized. I could not talk about Cassandra Clare and the hundreds of other instances of plagiarism in fandom spaces bc I'm sure eventually I'd hit the word-limit. There's simply too many cases of people smearing dirt on the faces of the fandom they profess to love.

But today, I want to address for-want-of-a-nail. I want to address them because recently (aka this week) they have accused of the very thing I find so abhorrent. I want to analyze them, their response (or lack their of), and show that this isn't something that just "accidentally happens". There are conscious choices made here, that I think are in-line with what a lot of plagiarist do, especially in Fan-spaces.

@for-want-of-a-nail has been accused of plagiarism in the Shadow & Bone community.

The Discord Sever

Last year, Nail was removed from a large Darklina Discord Sever for plagiarizing major passages and lines from another user's (Ceris_Malfoy) work that had been published in the Discord-shared Google doc before making it to AO3. Nail published their fic first, leaving the original author to debate deleting her own work due to fearing being labeled a plagiarist. The author ended up posting her full story, with no changes, but provided her statement on the matter at the end.

Nail never apologized to this creator. They never acknowledged this creator. They only said there was "inspiration" from other server members, without naming who they were.

This happened months ago. So you may wonder: "why are you bringing this up now?" I wanted to point out something that's been explored before, a notion about plagiarist that appears to ring true in this instance with Nail as well as with other plagiarist online:

The chances that someone only plagiarized once are low. The chances are, someone [like For-Want-Of-A-Nail] will have done this more than once, having rolled the dice time and time again, knowing or thinking that they wouldn't get caught.

I wanted to show that what occurred in the last month was not an accident, at least in my opinion. Like with Ceris_Malfoy, for-want-of-a-nail deliberately went and copied sections of text, barely adjusted it to fit her story, and refused to acknowledge or even apologize for her blatant theft of the work.

So what happened?

On January 1, 2023, @madismen posted the first chapter to Nordenfor Solen.

On December 5, 2023, for-want-of-a-nail published the 5th Chapter of Insider Threat.

It was noticed immediately by an anonymous user, who then commented on Madi's fic to reach out, bringing Madi's attention to the situation. And, of course, Madi noticed it immediately. Let's take a look from the screenshots below. (Nail has, allegedly, begun to change the original document. These screenshots were taken before Madi attempted to reach out.)

As you can see, in some places, such as when Alina/Nina are requesting panties, Nail directly copied the line without changing it at all.

To me the most damning thing is rearranging and replacing facets of the dialogue to make it not exact. A clear intent is required there. An understanding that "this thing is wrong, but I don't want to create my own dialogue, so I'll just fudge it." To me that's the part that makes this blatant theft.

Now, at this point remember, we've just gotten to the point where this is pointed out to Madismen at the beginning of this year. She attempted to reach out to For-Want-Of-A-Nail, but Madi couldn't access their Tumblr. (I believe that Nail preemptively blocked Madi on Tumblr, as many others were able to access their profile at this time.) So she left the following comment on Nail's fic.

Now, if you had clicked the link to Nail's fic, you may have noticed that this comment is not there. This is because for-want-of-a-nail deleted Madismen's comment, refusing to even acknowledge or deny the accusation at all.

Which lead to Madi posting on Twitter X about the situation. I believe both plagiarized works from for-want-of-a-nail have been reported to Ao3, but given their track-record this year I won't be holding my breath. And as of writing, that is the end of it.

for-want-of-a-nail blatantly stole someone else's work and refused to apologize and correct the situation. At least twice within the last year. Now I'm not going to go onto every chapter of every work of theirs to double check and attempt to find other instances of plagiarism. Twice is enough for me, personally, to know that they have likely done this before, and will likely do it again. In my opinion, I think that Nail is aware that what's they're doing is bad. They're aware that stealing is wrong, and that it would change the way their readers respond to the fics they post.

So What?

Speaking with other's in the Darklina community, as well as seeing how people react to other plagiarist on the internet, there's a clear line that is crossed. Consumption, especially in the Western world, is definitely connected now a days with Morals. And there is a large conversation about content vs morality and the lines you should draw from it. But, generally, a consensus has been drawn in at least one area.

Knowing that the work you're consuming is stolen, changes how you feel about it.

The worst part of all of this, to me, is the betrayal to readers. To those who genuinely enjoy the works being published and thinking that they are following someone who is creative and passionate about the subject they are writing. Only for them to be lied to. Because yes, when Nail responds to comments gushing over the work as if they wrote every single thing by themselves, they are lying to people.

They felt so entitled to Madismen's words, while going out of their way to call those invested in their story entitled for wanting more.

I think, personally, this is just someone who thinks of fandom as a competition. Someone who is willing to lie, steal, and belittle any and everyone who isn't them. It's not what fandom is supposed to be about. Fandom is a community of people who come together to share and expand their thoughts and feelings about any property. Nail essentially went to Show and Tell, smacked someone else's story out of their hand, then held it up as their own.

Where do we go from here?

Now, like I said at the beginning of this post, I don't want anyone to go out and harass this person. I don't want anyone to bully them, or make us come out and defend them.

Just ignore them.

Madismen has said her piece. I've just chronicled it. We don't need to attack or bully this person, but now that we are aware, we don't need to give them any attention. Giving Nail attention lets them think they've won. It would normalize their actions. We don't have to do either of those things. We don't have to acknowledge someone who has proven they don't care about the people in their fandom. We don't have to do anything.

The great thing about internet fandom is that we can choose who to follow and engage with. We can choose to consume fics that we love, written by people who didn't steal their words. You wouldn't read a plagiarized book. Or at least you shouldn't, because then you're supporting someone who has stolen wages on top of an idea.

There are thousands of works on AO3. There will be another one to read.

I don't want a witch hunt. I want people to stop stealing from other people. But, as I know that won't be happening, I think it's better to call out and learn to avoid these people. Like with the James Somerton situation (aka the HBomberguy video), I think it best that we just don't support this kind of behavior. Yes I'm on my soapbox a little, but it's also my blog and my personal opinion on the matter. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but please, don't go harassing these people, especially Nail. Just let them find out the consequences of their actions naturally.

You've spoken of IP concerns as the major practical barrier to generative AI use in the final product of a game. Steam seems to be about to become more open to games using these tools. What does this say about the industry's risk assessments?

I believe that Valve has determined they are ready and able to deflect any (current) legal liabilities onto an offending game's developers and off of themselves. Most of these devs are likely going to be similar to the AI-supported youtube content farms that regularly violate copyright but make money by having hundreds of channels all regurgitating videos such that it becomes difficult to copyright strike them all.

I also think that this decision will result in a wave of AI-supported shovelware and asset flips. Think about all of the RPGMaker games and Unity-type asset flips that are pervasive on Steam and just imagine more of those with AI-generated assets and such. I don't think the vast majority of these games will be any good, but they will certainly be plentiful since there's a much lower bar to make them.

* I made my old apartment play the Zelda Ocarina of Time shop music when you walked I the door.

I've been working on the setting for this story since I was about 7 years old, and I'm excited to finally get it out of my head and into yours.

I think the most depressing thing is that we shouldn't have to be afraid of AI.

AI, on it's own, is actually pretty cool. And we CAN and SHOULD have been able to have it without risking all these terrible versions of the future you see in clickbait youtube videos. AI should have been this interesting philosophical problem, that encouraged a wave of books about the ethics of sentience and robot labor. AI should have been the cause of celebrations, because maybe it will end up being useful for jobs that humans can't do well.

AI isn't really likely to turn evil and destroy the world. Yeah, that's definitely something to consider, but we aren't in a place where we have to worry about that yet.

AI face detection isn't inevitably evil, it's just almost inevitably going to be used in evil ways. In 20 years or so when corporations use their cameras to track your every move so they can market to you, that's going to be because corporations are awful and the government is not adapting well to regulating the internet. In some alternate world, AI face detection could be an innovative new way to use ID, one that cant be falsified or lost.

AI shuffling through the internet like an omnipresent spider isn't inherently bad. What's bad is that it uses what it finds to make dumb, unethical art, because that's where the money is. But in another world, AI's ability to analyze data could be used by scientists to find patterns in society and point to areas that need to be researched. It could also be used to evaluate sources, and disclose biases/conflicts of interests. Some schools are using it to detect plagiarism even now.

AI being able to do work that previously required humans shouldn't be scary. We should be excitedly welcoming in an era where humans no longer have to work to survive. We should be having televised councils of people debating ideas for how to restructure society when having a job is no longer required.

And AI's water consumption shouldn't have been a problem, because the people in charge should have massively scaled back once they realized the cost. They should have put AI on hold immediately, and started researching ways to either compensate for the water loss, or to reqiure less.

AI is not the problem. It is a tool, and as such, morally neutral. The ways it is being used are the problem. The people who are controlling it are the problem. If your society is structured so that the people in power cannot be held accountable, then every new tool, every innovation, only magnifies and expands their power. But if your society is structured where quality of life and ethics are valued highest, those tools become amazing, wonderful things. They become gifts, from humanity to humanity, that expand our ability to live good lives and take care of our environment.

We don't have to fight the future, we have to fight for the future.
