JUSTICE Card meaning: Responsibility, justice, truth and the law. The Justice card indicates that the fairest decision will be made. Kinda like how they pick the guest they will hand the flag to every time they do the Flag Retreat ceremony at Main Street every day in the Magic Kingdom. It's usually a guest who has been in the armed forces, good karmic justice and the consequences that their right actions throughout their life have brought them-- a nice thank you for their honesty and respect for their integrity.

So like, story concept:  Arthur finally returns to Albion. It’s the modern world and nobody is there whom he remembers. He realized soon that over a thousand years had passed and everyone he loved had died.  Broken and frustrated, he seeks shelter with a couple of monks or nuns or something.  He griefs for a few years, then he decides he has to build up a life here. And he manages to do so. Pretty well, actually. The nuns/monks he’s been living with, love him like their own son and he finds a business partner whom he can sell.... something something with. Or invent in bankings or some shit. The catch is, this business partner is inheritantly homophobic.  Now, Arthur lived with nuns here, and back in Camelot, people didn’t really talk about such things. Or at least the word wasn’t invented yet.  So he assumes, this homosexuality thing is just like magic was back then. A threat to his “kingdom”. Though, after remembering last time he completely believed a friend or family member on a thematic he didn’t understand, he refuses to make comments on it.  All he sees, are riots, where HIS allegedly friends and partners fight colorful people on the street with shouting at each other.  In public, especially on TV, Arthur holds back his opinion on the LGBT+ community. In private, he still has trouble understanding the internet and search functions.  One day, the fights and riots got really really bad. So bad in fact, that Arthur has to be accompanied by bodyguards to retreat to a building.  (Arthur had at this point already been marked as homophobic on twitter, because a) he’s not on social media, so he can’t even defend himself, b) someone of his own company had posted a wrong quote with his name underneath it.) Arthur is shoved through crowds of all different kinds of people (the press is actually the worst part), and THAT’s when he sees a familiar figure.  He blinks a couple times, certain he was mistaken.  But there he is, mouthing his name, just as much in shock as Arthur was. Dressed in a rainbow flag and the pan pride flag painted to his cheeks.  Merlin.  Arthur cannot believe it. He turned around again and shouts his name. And he sees Merlin’s eyes widen in realization that yes, this was real.  Arthur shoves the press out of his way, his bodyguards as well and especially his business partner who asks: “Do you know this guy?” And of course, Arthur doesn’t care, doesn’t give a DAMN, because Merlin is ALIVE and THERE and HERE and of course he hugs him.  Even when the camera’s flash up with a promising new title for tomorrows magazine.  And when his business partner shouts: “Are you NUTS? Do you even know who that is? That is Merlin Emrys! A known something something, who is known for doing something something-”,  Arthur just yells back.  “Who the hell cares? He’s my best friend and I thought he was DEAD.” “I cannot do business with a guy who supports gays.”, his partner replies.  “First of all, he’s not gay.” “Arthur-”; Merlin intervenes.  “He’s pan. It’s written on his T-Shirt. Secondly, if THAT is your biggest concern, you should really start looking into your accounts, because I do know a few people who care a lot more about tax evasion than people who color themselves with spray paint to celebrate who they are.”

A3 x Sleeping at Last
I have a fondness for the musician Sleeping at Last and i decided to have fun associating at least one of his song per A3 Characters. Under the cut are songs as well as some highlight lyrics to justify my choice. Some of them i feel more strongly than others so anyone with a comment is welcomed as well.
Thus here i go:
& Spotify playlist of all those songs in order if you want to go through it
Tumblr media
Mankai Company : North
We will call this place our home, The dirt in which our roots may grow. Though the storms will push and pull, We will call this place our home. We’ll tell our stories on these walls. Every year, measure how tall. And just like a work of art, We’ll tell our stories on these walls. Let the years we’re here be kind, be kind. Let our hearts, like doors, open wide, open wide. Settle our bones like wood over time, over time. Give us bread, give us salt, give us wine.
Tumblr media
Spring Troupe: From The Ground Up
It took me 27 years to wrap my head around this- To brush the ashes off of everything i love. Where courage was contagious, confidence was key. Right as rain, soft as snow, It grows and grows and grows, Our home sweet home.
We'll try to document this light, With cameras to our eyes, In an effort to remember What being mended feels like.
We're home sweet home.
Tumblr media
Sakuya Sakuma : The Projectionist
When I was young I fell in love with story, With the eleventh hour, with the blaze of glory.
When hands are tied and clocks are ticking An audience convinced, we're leaning in, holding our breath again Just when we thought the game was over The music lifts and our dying soldier lives And we breathe a sigh of relief The theater lights dim and all goes quiet. In the darkest of rooms, light shines the brightest.
We’re leaving, we’re leaving our shadows behind us now. We’re leaving, we’re leaving it all behind for now. But even dust was made to settle And if we’re made of dust, then what makes us any different? I guess we give what we’ve been given: A family tree so very good at giving up When we’ve had enough. Though truth is heavier than fiction, Gravity lifts as the projectionist rolls tape. And it makes us brave again
Tumblr media
Masumi Usui : Venus
At first I thought you were a constellation. I made a map of your stars, then I had a revelation: You’re as beautiful as endless, You’re the universe I’m helpless in. An astronomer at my best When I throw away the measurements.
I was a billion little pieces 'til you pulled me into focus. Astronomy in reverse, It was me who was discovered.
Tumblr media
Tsuzuru Minagi : Page 28
Have you read the script? Could you picture it? ... is it worth the risk?
Here in the second act I'm living in repair. Strange how the heart adapts when its pieces disappear. And there, on page 28, I'm so tired of drying glue, I begin my grand attempt at building something new. Though I tend to write the epiphany more immediately, I guess I'm trusting that there's such a thing as elegance in dissonance. God, I'm skeptical of pulling scenes. Was it something that I said? was it something that I did? Please don't get me wrong - I still need your help As history repeats itself Here in the aftermath, I'm pulling at the seams. Strange how the heart adapts in the absence of routine. And there, on page 29, I find “new” and make it mine. But I can't help casting shadows on all I leave behind. Maybe I could afford to change a bit... Even let go of the reigns? Every torn out page was worth the risk Now that the stakes have been raised. So here in the final draft, I've given all I have. Strange how the heart expands in the absence of a plan. There's nothing left on the page, but I'm okay with that, For I found my resolution Was designed for stronger hands.
 or Body
There's magic in our bones, A north star in our soul That remembers our way home. There's magic in our bones. No, I don't have a script for this. But I know the right words exist Somewhere, And I just need more time. I know, I know, I'm asking for the moon, But I must listen to intuition Believe me, I only want what's right.
Tumblr media
Itaru Chigasaki : Pluto
I woke up from the same dream: Falling backwards, falling backwards ’Til it turned me inside out. Now I live a waking life Of looking backwards, looking backwards; A model citizen of doubt. Until one day I had enough Of this exercise of trust. I leaned in and let it hurt, And let my body feel the dirt. When I break pattern, I break ground. I rebuild when I break down. I wake up more awake than I’ve ever been before. Still I’m pinned under the weight Of what I believed would keep me safe. So show me where my armor ends, Show me where my skin begins. Like a final puzzle piece It all makes perfect sense to me… The heaviness that I hold in my heart belongs to gravity. The heaviness that I hold in my heart’s been crushing me.
Or  East
I set out to rule the world With only a paper shield and a wooden sword. No mountain dare stand in my way, Even the oceans tremble in my wake. The tide is brave, but always retreats. Even the sand, it cowers under my feet. My kingdom towers above it all, While I sleep safe and sound in my cardboard walls. Now I bear little resemblance to the king I once was. I bear little resemblance to the king I could become. Maybe paper is paper, maybe kids will be kids- Lord, I want to remember how to feel like I did. So I draw my sword with the morning sun, I summon the moon as soon as the day is done. The clouds march on, on my command. Even the rain, it falls according to plan. The trees bow down and give their leaves. I humbly accept their offerings of peace. The years wore on and changed my heart, The leading role for a smaller part.
Tumblr media
Citron : Noble Aim
Chances are we are the same, against the odds, against the grain We lean, like gardens toward light but we wait, Like evening for night, Don't we? Chances are we are alike, against what better judgement writes We ache, like children for love For a purpose worthy of such a noble aim as love.
Chances are we bruise the same; a family tree desperate for rain. A thirst only deserts know best. a hurt so at home in our chests. Call it stubbornness or bravery, To let our branches continue to reach, With such a noble aim, With such a noble aim as love. Every broken branch and loosened leaf that we've grown to ignore, Is now a part of something greater than before. Every nest that rests upon our limbs, Seeking shelter from the storms, Is a purpose worth being broken for.
Chances are we are the same, against the odds, against the grain We lean, like gardens toward light, We reach with all of our might For such a noble aim as love
Tumblr media
Chikage Utsuki : Neptune
Pitch black, pale blue, It was a stained glass Variation of the truth, And I felt empty handed. You let me set sail with cheap wood. So I patched up every leak that I could, 'Til the blame grew too heavy.
Stitch by stitch I tear apart,  If brokenness is a form of art, I must be a poster child prodigy Thread by thread I come apart If brokenness is a work of art, Surely this must be my masterpiece
I'm only honest when it rains If I time it right, the thunder breaks, when I open my mouth I wanna tell you but I don't know how
I'm only honest when it rains An open book, with a torn out page, and my inks run out I want to love you but i don’t know how...
           Or South
Some truths, over time, can learn to play nice. Some truths are sharper than knives. Some truths we only see in the corners of our eyes. Some truths we wish we could hide. Some truths can save us, Some take our lives. Some truths are fire and some truths are ice. No matter what category you fit into, Truth’s got its sight set on you. If truth is north, then I am true south. I can’t figure it out- God knows. Always looking up 'Til my eyes give up. That’s how I lost touch of who I am and who I was.
Tumblr media
Summer Troupe : Joy
The clumsy start of adolescence, The glue that mends our broken remnants, An overwhelming sense of reverence, It's a glimpse of light in a mine of gold. A silver lining spilling over, The rumor of buried treasure, The starting line of an adventure, It's a glimpse of light in a mine of gold. It's an afterglow, it's an echo Still ringing out in spite of me. It's the faint outline of the divine In the hiding place of my periphery. So I let go and in this moment, I can breathe. I can breathe. The countless stars we're sleeping under, It's the brightest sparks that we remember. When our eyes are closed, we still see embers, A glimpse of light in a mine of gold. It's a glimpse of light in a mine of gold.
Tumblr media
Tenma Sumeragi : Three
Maybe I've done enough, and your golden child grew up Maybe this trophy isn't real love, And with or without it I'm good enough Maybe I've done enough, Finally catching up For the first time I see an image of my brokeness Utterly worthy of love
And I finally see myself, Through the eyes of no one else. It's so exhausting on this silver screen Where I play the role of anyone but me. I finally see myself, Unabridged and overwhelmed, A mess of a story I'm ashamed to tell, But I'm slowly learning how to break this spell. And I finally see myself. Now I only want what's real, to let my heart feel what it feels. Gold, silver or bronze hold no value here, Where work and rest are equally revered. I only want what's real, I set aside the highlight reel, And leave my greatest failures on display with an asterisk; Worthy of love anyway.
Tumblr media
Yuki Rurikawa : Hope
There is hope in our eyes when we truly see each other Like the light of countless stars We are not afraid of the dark 'Cause there is hope in our hearts And every single beat, we feel it To the ends of the earth, our echo carries on We are sacred, we are strong, We are beautiful, we belong Please hear our unheard song There is hope in our voice when we listen to each other Barriers disappeared with every story told We are sacred, we are strong, We are beautiful, we belong Please hear our unheard song There is hope in our eyes, When we truly see each other We raise our flag, lift our voice This is our moment, We are sacred, we are strong This is our moment, We are beautiful, we belong This is our moment, We are worthy, we are true This is our moment, There are no borders from this view Please help us raise our flag There is hope in our eyes when we truly see each other
Tumblr media
Muku Sakisaka :  Daughter
I want to see your happily ever after, That you know in your heart that you matter, That you are royalty. This is your kingdom, This is your crown, This is your story. This is your moment, Don’t look down.
You’re ready. born ready, And all you gotta do is put one foot in front of you. Our ceiling is your floor, And all you gotta do is put one foot in front of you. If only you knew
Tumblr media
Misumi Ikaruga : Seven
How nice it'd be if we could try everything? I'm serious, let's make a list and just begin What about danger? So what, what about risk? Let's climb the mountain before we cross that bridge! 'Cause I'm restless, For whatever comes next
How wonderful to see a smile on your face It costs farewell tears for a welcome-home parade A secret handshake between me and my one life: I'll find the silver lining no matter what the price 'Cause I'm hungry, For whatever comes next Let me tell you another secret of the trade- It feels like sinking when I'm standing in one place So I look to the future and I book another flight When everything feels heavy, I've learned to travel light But I want to be here, Truly be here To watch the ones that I love bloom And I want to make room To love them through and through and through And through the slow and barren seasons too
I feel hope deep in my bones... And tomorrow will be beautiful.
Tumblr media
Kazunari Miyoshi : Nine
Who am I to say what any of this means? I have been sleepwalking since I was fourteen Now as I write my song, I retrace my steps Honestly, it's easier to let myself forget
Still, I check my vital signs, Choked up, I realize I've been less than half myself for more than half my life
It looks like empathy to understand all sides But I'm just trying to find myself through someone else's eyes So show me what to do to restart this heart of mine How do I forgive myself for losing so much time?
A little at a time I feel more alive I let the scale tip and feel all of it It's uncomfortable but right We were born to try, to see each other through To know and love ourselves and others well Is the most difficult and meaningful work we'll ever do
Tumblr media
Kumon Hyodo : Intermission
I'm so tired but I can't sleep. My mind is full but I can't speak. Among the dust of the hard-to-reach, I'm stuck Right here, somewhere between side a and side b. I could call it compromise, or just an intermission. Some kind of consolation prize for the race I never finished. I want to turn these tired gears. I want to feel the follow-through, Some kind of equilibrium... Something to set my watch to.
I'm here, somewhere between victory and a white flag. Caught in this purgatory dream, I'm stuck.   But I want to set the record straight, I want to retrace my every step. If I could just rewind all the tapes, Then maybe I'd find my loose thread.   Call it a compromise, or just an intermission. Some kind of consolation prize, so close, but never finished.   I want to turn these tired gears. I want to feel the follow-through, Some kind of equilibrium... Something to set my watch to.
 Pluto works for him too
Tumblr media
Autumn Troupe : The Sea of Atlas
We once felt safe, like no cure was needed. Our vocabularies had no room for “defeated,” But we grew up quick and became connoisseurs of it. There's a fine line, a fine line in between Our progress and our instability. We can't help ourselves but hunt for more. A design flaw? or the olive branch that proves the shore- The catalyst we've waited for.
Tumblr media
Banri Settsu : One
Hold on for a minute, 'Cause I believe that we can fix this over time That every imperfection is a lie, Or at least an interruption Now hold on, let me finish,  No, I'm not saying perfect exists in this life But we'll only know for certain if we try
The list goes on forever of all the ways I could be better in my mind As if I could earn God's favor given time Or at least congratulations Now I have learned my lesson The price of this so-called perfection is everything I spend my whole life searching desperately To find out grace requires nothing of me I... I wanna sing a song worth singing I'll write an anthem worth repeating I... I wanna feel the transformation A melody of reformation I hold it all more loosely, and yet somehow much more dearly 'Cause I spend my whole life searching desperately To find out that grace requires nothing Grace requires nothing of me
Tumblr media
Juza Hyodo : Taste
I am alive, I am awake. I am aware of what light tastes like. The curtains drawn, the table's set, I wanna be, I wanna be, at my best.
I'm on my knees and only scratch the surface.
Out of the woods, out of the dark. I’m well aware of the shadows in my heart. I wanna feel, tectonic shifts; I wanna be, I wanna be, astonished. I wanna be astonished. So I propose a toast: To fists unraveling, to glass unshattering. To breaking all the rules, to breaking bread again. We’re swallowing light, we’re swallowing our pride. We’re raising our glass, ’til we’re fixed from the inside. 'Til we're fixed from the inside. We're nothing less than a work in progress. Sacred text on Post-It notes. We only speak of a world in pieces. Let's make a map of what matters most: Where every fracture is a running river. Leading us back to our golden coast.
OR Mercury
No one can unring this bell Unsound this alarm, unbreak my heart new God knows, I am dissonance Waiting to be swiftly pulled into tune
I know the further I go The harder I try, only keeps my eyes closed And somehow I’ve fallen in love With this middle ground at the cost of my soul Yet I know, if I stepped aside Released the controls, you would open my eyes That somehow, all of this mess Is just my attempt to know the worth of my life
Made of precious metals, precious metal inside
Tumblr media
Taichi Nanao:  Sadness
It feels like falling, It feels like rain,  Like losing my balance, Again and again It once was so easy, Breathe in, breathe out But at the foot of this mountain I only see clouds
I feel out of focus, or at least indisposed As this strange weather pattern inside me takes hold Each brave step forward I take three steps behind It's mind over matter, Matter over mind
Slowly, then all at once, A single loose thread And it all comes undone
Where there is light a shadow appears The cause and effect when life interferes The same rule applies to goodness and grief For in our great sorrow We learn what joy means
I don't want to fight, I don't want to fight it But I will learn to fight, I will learn to fight 'Til this pendulum finds equilibrium
Slowly, then all at once, The dark clouds depart And the damage is done, So pardon the dust While this all settles in, With a broken heart Transformation begins
or Bright and Early
The sun comes pouring in. Filling glasses up with diamonds, Stirring where I've been But it's all trigger and effect. Dominoes at their best. In the end I'm told, It taught me everything I know. That the wreckage left behind, will somehow make me grow.
In the end I'm told It taught me everything I know. But when the fire took our home, I lost part of my soul. From the ground up I'll keep building houses into homes. 'cause if trust is ribbon, Then patience ties it in a perfect bow.
Tumblr media
Omi Fushimi : Aperture
Happiness is somewhere I have been before- A blurry photograph that I have since ignored. I'll carefully adjust the aperture once more, Until I set the record straight. I'll brush aside the dim, make room for the bright. I'll be an editor, no, a curator of light. I'll let my better angels always set me right, Until I even out the score. Until I even out the score. God, it has been quite a year- I've lived a little bit and I've died a little more. I know that I've asked it before, But please let the scale tip here in my favor. What was once the sweetest melody I've heard Is now a memory reduced to little words. I'll tune the orchestra and play the overture, Until I pinpoint every note. Give me the heart of an archeologist, That I may dig until I prove that I exist. A subterranean cathedral in my midst, Where echos come to rest.
Tumblr media
Sakyo Furuichi : Touch
When will I feel this as vivid as it truly is, Fall in love in a single touch, and fall apart when it hurts too much? Can we skip past near-death clichés Where my heart restarts, as my life replays? All I want is to flip a switch Before something breaks that cannot be fixed.
Invisible machinery, These moving parts inside of me Well, they’ve been shutting down for quite some time, Leaving only rust behind. Well I know, I know - the sirens sound Just before the walls come down. Pain is a well-intentioned weatherman Predicting God as best he can, But God I want to feel again, Oh God I want to feel again.
Rain or shine, I don’t feel a thing, just some information upon my skin. I miss the subtle aches when the weather changed, The barometric pressure we always blamed. All I want is to flip a switch Before something breaks that cannot be fixed. Down my arms, a thousand satellites Suddenly discover signs of life.
Tumblr media
Azami Izumida : Anger
Like wildfire, it starts in my chest The silence grows louder, ringing out in my head
I feel the Earth shaking under my feet I feel the pressure building until I can't breathe And it takes everything
And it all spills out, reckless but honest words leave my mouth Like kerosene on a flame of doubt, I couldn't make it right
Alarms will sound, but it's too late for holy water now Sooner or later the fire dies down, I'll open up my eyes
And I'll try and find the image of God In mountains made of ash and clouds of smoke It's fight or flight, buried in my mind, It's fight or flight It keeps my mind cold
But I feel it break, With just one misstep down a fire escape And suddenly I'm someone that prays, a last minute man of faith But I'll leave behind miles and miles of jagged lines Upon the surface of the Divine, I wish I could set them straight
Say
they impose the endless fight to always be perfect it seems they have been chosen to be above the rest
but the contradiction stands between these perfect lives and the words that they've misread there was no reading say all the things that you really want to say the truest of forms will show finally you'll find your soul
Tumblr media
Bonus: Sakyo & Azami: Uneven Odds
I once knew your father well He fought tears as he spoke of your mother’s health I guess a part of him just couldn’t return Forgiveness is a lesson he cursed you to learn As your guardian I was instructed well To make sense of God’s love in these fires of hell No I don’t expect you to understand Just to live what little life your broken heart can Maybe your light is a seed And the darkness the dirt In spite of the uneven odds Beauty lifts from the earth As the years move on these questions take shape Are you getting stronger or is time shifting weight? No one expects you to understand Just to live what little life your mended heart can You’ll always remember the moment God took her away For the weight of the world was placed on your shoulders that day You’re much too young now so I write these words down, “Darkness exists to make light truly count.”
& Heirloom
You try your hardest to leave the past alone. This crooked posture is all you’ve ever known. It is the consequence of living in between The weight of family and the pull of gravity. You are so much more than your father’s son. You are so much more than what I’ve become. Long before you were born there was light Hidden deep in these young, unfamiliar eyes. A million choices, though little on their own, Become the heirloom of the heaviness you’ve known. You are so much more than your father’s son. You are so much more than what I’ve become,
You pressed rewind for the thousandth time When the tapes wore through. So you memorized those unscripted lines, Desperate for some kind of clue:
When the scale tipped, when you inherited,  A fight that you were born to lose. It’s not your fault, No, it’s not your fault, I put this heavy heart in you.
You remind me of who I could have been, Had I been stronger and braver way back then. A million choices, though little on their own, Became the heirloom of the heaviness we’ve known. You are so much more than your father’s son. You are so much more than the wars you’ve won. You are so much more than your father’s son. You are so much more than what I’ve become.
Tumblr media
Winter Troupe : Homesick
Our resignation only comes on beaten paths When the world was flat we dreamt of its edges If love's elastic, then were we born to test it's reach? Is it buried treasure or just a single puzzle piece? It's poison ivy beneath our brave and trusting feet All revelations come to us in recovery Cry wolf, cry mercy, Cry the name of the one you were raised to believe Cry heart, cry yourself to sleep, Cry a storm of tears if it helps you breathe It helps you, if it helps you breathe
 Or Hourglass
We're taking turns at shattering apart. At least we're taking turns. How did we get so good at dismantling these hearts? How did we ever get so good? We dress our best to receive their sympathy. At our worst, we dress our best? “time heals all” According to these greeting cards. Oh how we'd rather time resets. If we could turn the hourglass, we would. If we could move a grain of sand, we would. If we could find our way back, we would.
Tumblr media
Tsumugi Tsukioka : Clockwork
There is glass between our touch, phantom limbs of former love... and the truth is that I am so terrified that the callous is deeper than the surface of our skin. and it takes us twice as long, it takes us twice as long to heal. we'll lift up the ground to see the system of roots beneath. gears turn, endlessly, to bring the world back to life like clockwork, when it dies. the cadence of beating hearts, the click of its moving parts grows louder and louder from this restless earth... future gardens wait patiently below  and somehow we smell them blossom through the snow.
still unsatisfied, we chase what we're denied. as generations wait, we can't resist the taste of possibility. gears turn, endlessly, to bring us back to life again. like clockwork, we begin.
Tumblr media
Tasuku Takato : Porcelain
The door broke when you slammed it shut, and the cracks kept reaching long after you left. through the floorboards, branching towards the hall, like vines that never rest... climbing like fire through the walls. a single spark that claims the whole forest - I know, I know... it's all for the best. but honestly, I would rather be safe from a distance than here... when I fell to my knees to sew the damage shut, I couldn't believe... a bright, staggering light came flooding into me from out of the seams. so I reached deeper in and pulled my whole world wide open, and for each broken mile, a billion miracles happen at once in everything... in everything. but I'm safe from a distance, right here. everything I love was made of porcelain, ready to break. but the bright, staggering light, it anxiously waits inside. like nesting dolls, the secret hides. and like every birth, it was a necessary pain... I know, I know... it's all worth the wait, worth the weight.
or Accidental Lights
On your mark, get set... A million miles past the finish line My heels lift at this imaginary starting line. The trigger slips; My heart was racing well before it's time. Time's running out, it's always running out on me, As the road up ahead disappears. Though it's all been said, and this empty dictionary is all that's left, I'll try to change the world in a single word. My hands are shaking, ready or not. Invisible ink well it's all I've got. So I'll concentrate and pick from these barren trees. Time's running out, it's always running out on me, And every road I discover disappears under my feet - Some call it reckless, some call it breathing. Have i said too much or not enough? Is it overkill or is it giving up, To measure out the distance of an echo's reach? If it's all broken mirrors and a chance roll of the dice, Then I'll risk everything for a glimpse of accidental light. Time's running out, it's always running out on me, And every road I've discovered disappears under my feet - Some call it reckless, I call it breathing.
Tumblr media
Hisoka Mikage : Smell
Is this the part when the brain scans show where memories reside? Some ambiguous shape in me suddenly producing light Triggered like a tripwire, every time I breathe it in Isn't it strange that a Lilac tree is what unlocks where I've been? Like a time machine rebuilds the past, our memories return Like remembering the ashes before we burn
It finishes against my will, the light goes out, my heart goes still And just like that, I believe in ghosts
Time and space are at my back, Performing disappearing acts Now I can escape the smell of smoke Research says that the only way to keep memories intact Is to lock 'em away and close the doors to countless years of past I guess that explains why the strangest things can conjure up the past And forgotten time will find its long way back
It doesn't matter, I just know I need more Cause I feel like I've been sleeping through the better part of this Laying dormant through an endless winter that doesn't even exist
It's gravity in an hourglass, responsible for the avalanche And the loudest silence that I've ever heard Memory clear as a bell, A story that I will try to tell Maybe this time without words

Maybe I'm hiding behind metaphor Maybe my heart needs to break to be sure One day I'll wear it all on my sleeve The insignificant with the sacred unique But I've fallen in love with a ghost I lost my balance when I needed it most And this blurry photograph is proof Of what I'm not sure but it feels like truth I'm stuck swimming in shadows down here It's been forever since I came up for air Flashlight in hand determined to find Authenticity only poetry could even begin to try to describe
What if we already are who we've been dying to become In certain light I can plainly see a reflection of magnificence Hidden in you, Maybe even in me
or Son
Show me Who I am and who I could be Initiate the heart within me 'til it opens properly
Slow down Start again from the beginning I can't keep my head from spinning out of control Is this what being vulnerable feels like? And I will try, try, try to breathe 'til it turns to muscle memory I'm only steady on my knees One day I'll stand on my own two feet And I'll run the risk Of being intimate with brokenness Through this magnifying glass I see a thousand finger prints On the surfaces of who I am

Azuma Yukishiro : Two
Tell me, is something wrong?  If something's wrong, you can count on me You know I'll take my heart clean apart if it helps yours beat It's okay if you can't find the words, Let me take your coat and this weight off of your shoulders
I know exactly how the rule goes Put my mask on first No, I don't want to talk about myself Tell me where it hurts I just want to build you up, build you up 'Til you're good as new And maybe one day, I will get around To fixing myself, too I don't even know where to start Already tired of trying to recall when it all fell apart I just want to love you, to love you, to love you well I just want to learn how, somehow to be loved myself
Or Six
What would it feel like to put this baggage down? If I'm being honest I'm not sure I'd know how I want to take shelter but I'm ready, ready to fight And somewhere in the middle I feel a little paralyzed But maybe I'm stronger than I realize I wanna believe - No, I choose to believe That I was made to become a sanctuary Fear won't go away but I can keep it at bay And these invisible walls just might keep us safe With a vigilant heart, I'll push into the dark And I'll learn to breathe deep and make peace with the stars Is that courage or faith to show up every day? To trust that there will be light, Always waiting behind even the darkest of nights
Tumblr media
Guy : Mind
First, the ground rules get established: Memory is historically inaccurate. But repetition, repetition sings 'Til finally the melody is sacred, rooted, unchanged.
It overwhelms the nervous system, This fearful constant state of comparison. In our grey matter, all grey matters. An embarrassment of riches in our heads, We gravitate to black or white instead. We were designed to send mixed signals, One image made up of different pixels All subject to interpretation. 'Til binary systems, binary systems run And the vibrancy of everything becomes zeros and ones.
Patterns form and feel important, It's the first brush stroke of a self-portrait.

Chapter 32- Chaos in the Clouds
Masterpost
A Wizard Hermits tale (AU, designs, ideas belongs to @theguardiansofredland)
After a successful battle against more of Dolios’s dark forces, Ren, Tango, Impulse, and False take a much needed break to enjoy Edenswell, the city in the sky. Little do they know, their peace will soon be shattered by death.
____________________________________
The temple of Tyn was a haven of truth, the quiet whispers of candor mixing with the swift whisks of shuttles crossing the tapestries. Woven stories, facts and history written where no lie can ever be told. Finished panels hang from the wooden pillars, waving gently in the high winds of Edenswell. All is well, all is silent, truthful. Sincere.
Until Impulse goes crashing through the main hall, splinters of wood spraying across the worshippers and weavers. From the broken pillar, a thunderbird perches, empty lightning coursing through ashen wings. If it weren’t the patches of husked feathers falling off in clumps and the burning white eyes, it would look like it’s usual stormcloud color.
But the husk beast leaps down, talons scraping against the wood, it’s squawk as loud as thunder. Impulse shakes his head, shaking free from the dizzy spell and plucking a splinter as big as his finger from his hair. Through the dancing tapestries, the hermit can see False, Tango, and Ren stumble after the monster. He rises to his feet, offering a grin to a nearby priest. “I totally don’t have this under control.”
He didn’t mean to say that. But the words that were on the tip of his tongue came out as what he was thinking. Damn truth spells, his words have done little except make the pilgrims feel worse! Impulse offers a meek smile, and hops over the husked thunderbird, a well-timed explosion tossing him over the enormous bird’s head.
Ren’s hands cross, fingers symmetrical before snapping outwards, twisting and turning to summon his magic. “Let’s get this little birdy wrangled up, y’all.”
With a chuckle, Ren casts his magic. The circle tightens, trails weaving into a braided rope. Just as he imagined, a lasso appears in his hand. Beside him, False calls out orders. Like the general of an army. “Tango, Impulse, keep it distracted for Ren!”
“Hey Impy, think it’ll taste like chicken?” Tango laughs, fire blazing around him. He taps his heel against the cloud beneath his feet, and condensed water burns into steam, the floor falling away from the thunderbird. Together, the two keep the bird preoccupied, completely oblivious to the spinning rope of Ren’s lasso.
Of all the cities the hermits thought would be safe from Dolios and his dark magic, surely the city in the sky would be. But the reports of unrelenting storms and flocks of broken-winged birds led them straight to the crystal. Nestled in the heart of a hot spring spa, in the depths of the clouds and open to the sky, False and Ren managed to destroy the corrupted crystal. But not before this thunderbird discovered them, and attacked with the strength of a hurricane.
“I think he’s mad he didn’t do his job! Protect the crystal, kill any nosy townsfolk.” Impulse chuckles, snapping his fingers and blasting the flank of the bird. Ash of the husked form collapses, head rearing back and lightning crackling under the wings and feathers. Generated by the beat of the beast’s wings. But before it can release it’s thunderous caw, matched with the bolt of lightning, amber magic twists and wraps across the thunderbird’s beak.
“Got’em, boys! False?” Ren grins, digging his heels into the cloud vapor. HIs ears tuck against his head, fur meeting hair as he struggles to keep the eagle from escaping into the sky. What Ren wouldn’t give for a buff from Wels right now.
False doesn’t hesitate. She never does. She leaps onto the back of the bird, heels digging between feathers and flakes of the soulless, lifeless body, and raises her blade. The rippling metal turns bright red. As hot as freshly forged metal waiting to be doused in oil. Without wasting another second, she cuts the husk down.
The form beneath her feet crumbles like fall leaves, ash and embers picked up by the winds of the cloud city, with False left to collapse onto the ground. For a place built in the clouds, her ass feels anything but cushioned.
But she’s grinning all the same, accepting Tango’s hand to help her up and elbowing Ren in the stomach. “One less creepy beast in the world. And one more crystal in the books.”
“I’d say we earned ourselves some rest and relaxation. Edenswell does have some of the best spas and retreats in Lairyon.” False lets her sword clatter to the cloud, pulling a hand through her hair and the clumps of blood and dirt from her locks.
“I dunno about a spa, but I saw the Festival of Mimé is going on, and I wanna have some fun while we’re up here with our heads in the clouds.” Tango points out, which causes Impulse’s eyes to light up.
“The festival of Mimé? That’s the biggest fireworks showcase in the kingdom! They have a contest every year to see who can do the best exhibition, and I’ve always wanted to see it.” Impulse has already turned towards the sound of music and celebration, in honor of the god of joy.
“Why not just watch it if you can join it, my dude?” Ren points out, stretching aching muscles, hands over his head and pulling them taut. Both Tango and Impulse stop dead in their tracks, and False only groans from her spot on the ground.
“Ren, you mad genius. We’re going to blow that contest away. Literally.” Impulse’s toothy grin appears, matching his friend’s. False finally rises up, shaking her head.
“You guys are adults, you do what you want. Just...don’t burn down the damned city.” False waves them off, and goes in search of somewhere peaceful to rest and recuperate. She could use some healing as well. That thunderbird did a number in battle.  Ren, Impulse, and Tango are left to their own devices.
A dangerous thing. The three clamber over one another to be the first at the entrance to Mimé’s temple. At the mouth of the open courtyard, color blossoms across the grass in flowers, flags, and festivities. Kids run past dragging kites and blowing pinwheels, while adults are celebrating with their own joyous creations. As soon as the hermits are through the archway, flower crowns have been set upon their head. Impulse even managed to find ones that wouldn’t catch fire upon Tango’s hot head. Music and dancing fills the open air, surrounded by brightly colored food and even brighter laughter and crafts.
Ren lets loose a low whisper. “Guess Mimé and Blumiere share one thing in common- creativity is joyous.”
“We’re going to wake the ancient ones with our joyous fireworks show.” Tango grins, searching for the contest. But he notices another pageant going on. “Hey, Ren, look. A pet agility course.”
Ren rolls his eyes, but his tail wags without his consent at the idea of running it. “I’m an imagination mage, not a dog. It was one mixup.”
“One mix up that left you with ears, a tail, and a joy to chase carts.” Impulse snickers. “Come on,  RenDog, you’d be the most handsome dog in the whole pageant. And the fastest.”
“What’s the harm? It’s all good fun, Mimé would want that. I dare you.” Tango’s words are all that Ren needs to hear, and the mage plods off to join the pet parade.
Tango and Impulse waste no time getting to work. A hellbound mage and an explosions wizard, teaming up to make the best fireworks ever seen by the entire kingdom.Mixing together all colors, all patterns, daring to go bigger and better than any other contestant, it’s Tango’s wild ideas and Impulse’s refined magic that allows them to slowly tune towards perfection.
But not without a few mistakes along the way. Their first attempt at a spectacular sight turned into a show fit for ants, not for gods. And there aren’t even ants in Edenswell- it’s a city in the clouds, for Stratis’s sake.
The next mistake was loud enough that even False heard it from the hero’s spring baths that healed her wounds. She peeked one eye open, seeing yellow and red blossoming in the open roof of the Hero's baths. She only sinks lower into the azure waters, shaking her head. They’re adults, she doesn’t always need to run in and be the S-Class mage. She’s going to enjoy this rest, dammit.
After trial and error, error and trial, night falls on Edenswell and the fireworks shows begin. Sound mages ease the explosions to sensitive ears, allowing music to swell with the colors that blossom in the sky. Sincere shows, wishes in the sky, and large extravaganzas dazzle the crowd and illuminate the air in place of the sun.
Tango and Impulse are last to show, and with each entry before them, they get more excited. Tango just wants to snap his fingers and light it up now, so everyone can see all the hard work they did. Ren disappeared hours ago, and they’ve only caught glimpses of his brown ears or colorful outfit since then. But at least False arrives just in time for the show. “Where’d you lose Ren?”
The two shrug, noticing that her wounds from this morning’s battles have already faded to scars and False looks more refreshed, ready to battle than ever. Whoever duels her next better watch out. “He joined the pet party or whatever. Seems like he was having a good time last we saw.”
Tango laughs at Impulse’s words, still in disbelief their friend actually crashed a pet show. But that’s Ren for them, wild and innovative, and never backing down from a dare. “You ready to see the biggest, best, most awesome and perfect fireworks-ification you’ve ever had the honor to lay eyes on?”
“I’m ready to see whatever it is you two have created.” False steps back, materializing a large shield, the blade pointed out and disk protecting her chest. “From a protected and safe distance away. I’m not making another cannon mistake.”
“Oh, ye of little faith.” Tango grins, and snaps his fingers. Fire erupts at the base, dancing along an intricate, twisting sequence that False can only compare to Mumbo’s redstone lines. Fireworks blast off into the sky, dancing in spinning circles and straight lines, set off at the perfect time that when they explode, they paint the dark night with colors that twist and dance, intricate patterns flowing in seamless design. Music swells with the dazzling paint, the musicians inspired by the incredible sight before them. False is mesmerized, feeling the purples and blues and greens and whites light up on her face, the joy of watching such a show reminding her what it means to be a hermit. To see her friends create, to see the beauty of unrestrained magic.
The finale blows the sky open with every color of the rainbow and then some, illuminating the entire city, but even under the crescending music False hears Tango and Impulse curse at the same time. The colors fade into streaks of light, embers falling to the city like a meteor shower. False shakes her head, realizing at some point in the show she put her shield down. She was too enamored by the fireworks. “Okay, I’ll admit- that was fantastic.”
“But it wasn’t perfect.” Tango grumbles. “We messed up the pattern in the grand finale.”
Ren bowls into the three, tail wagging and eyes alight. “Dudes, I could tell that was your fireworks, that was the coolest thing ever! Mimé must be stoked, he probably hasn’t seen something that epic since the ancients!”
“No, it really wasn’t.” Impulse kicks the ground. “We fucked up the end, it’s not what we imagined.”
There’s a loud thwap, sparks flying from Tango’s head while Impulse hisses, rubbing the crown of his brown hair. “That was the most incredible fireworks show i ever saw. You two are gifted with explosions- that I already know- and that was badass. Even if it wasn’t what you imagined, I thought it was beautiful. Because it was you two’s work, your heart and soul, even your mistake was a part of you guys.”
“False is spitting truth, bros.” Ren adds, nodding his head. “That was so cool, you guys made your idea come to life! Wasn’t it fun making it?”
Tango and Impulse pause, looking at the sizzling remains of their fireworks. The ash stained grass, a few chunks missing from the cloudcover. And they laugh. “It definitely was a blast.” Impulse croons. “I hope Mimé thought that was as cool as it was to make.”
“I definitely think it was a joy to watch.” False hums. She rolls her shoulders, eyes roving across the festival. People’s eyes sparkle, conversations and fingers pointed towards the sky. “And I think others feel the same way. Congrats, hermits. No only did we save the day, you guys made it a little bit brighter here as well.”
“And I won best in show!” Ren chuckles, showing off his medal. The others laugh, and he tucks it away. “None of you guys tell the others about this.”
“No, we’re telling everyone.” False snorts.

A Hat in Time :: The Nutcracker AU :: 1st Climax and 2nd Rising Action
Wooo, after this, there’s only one more update!
Maybe I’ll get this done before the holiday, who knows :3c
Enjoy Clara’s senseless bravery, and Francesca’s ceaseless desire to help!
1st Climax:
Clara:
Clara watches as the Queen of the Cats tells the Nutcracker how excited she is to finally beat him, and how the Kingdoms of Snow and Sweets will finally be hers. The Nutcracker is knocked back, working on getting up with the Queen brandishing her claws. Just as she’s about to swipe down at him, a small slipper nails her straight in the face with enough force to knock her back, and her attention is drawn to the little girl staring at her with all the misguided bravery and conviction an 8 year old can muster.
Clara immediately regrets her decision when the Queen’s claws turn towards her, but the Queen is stopped by a sword - the Nutcracker getting in her way, and said soldier tells Clara to run - calling her by name and she does as she’s told, but sees something that might help and heads towards it.
Getting the help of one of the toy soldiers - joined by a few more, the group uses a book up on the table next to the tree to push it down and damage the Queen’s “artillery”, and the destruction distracts her, and it's just enough for the Nutcracker to take the upper hand, stabbing his sword clean through her - defeating her and causing the other cats to retreat in fear.
The soldiers and Clara cheer in victory, before Clara jumps down onto the chair she used to climb to the table, and then, while making eye contact with the nutcracker, jumps down to him. He manages to catch her, but scolds her for doing that and seems a bit high strung after everything that occurred. She asks how he knows her name and he retorts that he was aware and conscious the entire time that she was playing with him - only just now realizing that this nutcracker is in fact “The Snatcher”
Francesca:
Francesca, meanwhile, sees that Vanessa and Ludwig have been in correspondence, with Ludwig saying that he was searching for his missing brother, and also seeing his notes on curse breaking, putting things together pretty simply. Her eyes scanned over his notes about his brother’s curse - written in a weird, “if you know then i don’t need to explain it” kind of way, but she starts to put together that Vanessa definitely knows something, talking about Lukas as if she knows where he is, and that she hopes he’s not “toying around”, which Ludwig takes much umbridge with as his brother “has never been like that”, with her responding that he’d “be surprised.”
Ludwig finds her in his office, and in a slightly frazzled state asks her what she’s doing, and she doesn’t bother explaining herself, immediately telling him that Vanessa’s letters are suspicious - pointing out perhaps the most damning detail - that she knows that Lukas disappeared at night, something that no one else knows but Ludwig, because he was there to help his brother (something she read in the man’s journal). Not to mention that Lukas wasn’t pronounced missing until two days later, and, perhaps most damningly to Vanessa, she claimed that she’d left their home the night Lukas went missing, so there was absolutely no way that she could have known when he went missing unless…
Ludwig, in a sudden burst of alarm, picks up Francesca out of his chair and puts her on the desk, looking back through the documents and seeing the other red flags, as well as her accusatory language. He seems disbelieving still, but he grabs a book off the shelf that he’d gotten from his family's library, and opens it to a frayed page, written in an old, dead language, but recognizing handwriting in the margins with the translation of the spell. It was Vanessa’s. The looping of her As and the crossing of her Ts gave her away.
Ludwig sits back in his chair, disbelieving and bewildered that he hadn’t put it together before this..
Second Rising Action:
Clara:
The Nutcracker stated that he has to return to the Land of Sweets, to report to the Sugar Plum Fairy. Clara asked if she could join him, and he snapped at her that of course he’s taking her with him. She wasn’t supposed to be here, or shrunken down in the first place! Clara pouted at him and scolded him for yelling, leaving him sheepish as he led his army of toy soldiers under the chair, where there was a “portal” into the Snow Kingdom.
Clara jumped out of the Nutcracker’s arms, and ran forward into the land, fascinated and excited at the beauty and magic of it all, the Nutcracker freaking out when she slips on the ice and he catches her just in time, scolding her, but much softer this time - seemingly learning from his last scolding of her already. She still rolls her eyes though, and starts rushing ahead again. Exasperated, he chased after her right up until they got to the gates of the snow castle. She starts talking to the snow guards before he catches up and tells them to let the king know that the Queen of the Cats is dead.
They are called into the castle, where the king greets them with much joy and excitement. He thanks the nutcracker, and Clara buts in and says that she helped and the king - a man with children of his own, also congratulates her, offering the two of them sweets and to stay for a little while - stating that his children were happy and willing to perform a celebration “ceremony”. Clara excitedly says yes, and - when it looks like the nutcracker might say no, she gives him a very adorable pouty face and he caves.
The prince and princess appear, with the princess showing off her annoyed attitude and the prince looking super excited to perform. Clara banters with them a bit before taking a seat next to the Nutcracker and they watch the prince and princess put on a spectacular ice magic show - think the ballet but with Elsa’s ice powers. The Nutcracker takes some moments to explain how the magic works and some of the visual tricks, and is pleased when Clara seems interested and talks about how amazing all of it is.
The performance ends, and Clara excitedly claps and compliments them endlessly, while the Nutcracker speaks with the king, who gives him a cape for Clara to wear, since it is “awfully cold, don’t you think?” The Nutcracker - literally a wooden toy- hadn’t even thought of that. He calls Clara over, and drapes the cloak over her to keep her warm, telling her they have to go on their way to the Land of Sweets. Clara excitedly wonders if she’ll be able to eat everything there as the Nutcracker leads her out, and they make their way to the open road, where they head off to the Sugar Plum Fairy’s domain.
Francesca:
Francesca watches Ludwig try to collect himself, and she asks, as gently as she can manage, what happened. Ludwig explains to her that his brother was cursed, and that he had spent the last two years looking for a way to break it, but he never knew who did it, or now, and with Francesca’s insight, he realized that it had been his brother’s finance - one of the few people he trusted while on his journey. They had been in constant correspondence for those two years and he’s only realizing through rereading just how thoroughly he’d been tricked by her. (There is a lot of dialog here as well as a few flashbacks, so it's like, just as long as the previous section, but I’m just summing it up here)
Frannie tries to comfort him, asking if now that he knows who did it, if that helps him at all, and he tells her yes, that knowing that Vanessa did this to his brother helps immensely, explaining that now he can look specifically for the curse that she translated and its various permutations for a curse breaker. The little girl than asks how she can help, and he looks at her, feeling her burning desire to help him right in his chest. He gets up and grabs a book, telling her that she needs to help him look for similar curses with similar ancient symbols.
She nods and the two of them begin to look…

Disclaimer: Obviously these rankings are just based off of others’ opinions. I really liked “Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre” even though inseams the majority of people didn’t. Whatever show seems interesting to you, watch it! The majority of guzhuang dramas are made with delicacy and attention to detail. I’ve seen reviews complimenting some dramas with relatively lower ratings, so of course every drama has its fans. I would obviously suggest you all go and watch the top 5 if they sound interesting to you.

PJO TV Plans
So before even the first little HINT about the PJO Disney+ show, I was making plans for a Riordan-verse tv show.
So each season would have twenty episodes, with 8-9 episodes per book and in the middle, two episodes based on short stories or myths. This would allow for the actors, who would obviously be age-matching kids, to grow and still be the appropriate ages for each story.
As we would eventually run out of actual Riordan books, we would move on to Riordan Presents books. Here’s my plans! Let me know what you think and if/how i should clarify!
(Bold is Season, italic is middle/short story episodes, and strikethrough is book. I often show the extents of each episode through chapter titles or quotes found on the wiki plot summaries of each book. If using chapter title, that means it uses every chapter until the next mentioned one.)

Chapter 14-Laila
After that encounter with the first spirit, we figured that the next few ones would also be near tiny, glowing things.
Now, here we were, in some destructed ‘castle’ under a clouded sky of dark green, where Astra’s intuition had led us. Just a few days back, we were at the regional library, picking out geography- and mythology-related books to look through.
We trudged along the sandy path for days (we did set up camps along the way for the night) across the unbelievably large desert-land, and finally came face to face with the pitch-black, deserted castle (We couldn’t fly because of the ever-occurring violent sandstorms. There wouldn’t be any warning of one, and we would never escape them with our wings unscathed).
I could tell at first glance that it was once a magnificent kingdom, with all those intricate patterns on the wall— perhaps the gold had rusted, and the empire, fallen. Something terrifying had settled here and disrupted the peace before. Chairs, tables, cutlery and whatever large things were scattered all over the floor, visibly thrown from the panic of the people who once roamed the now empty corridors.
The castle had been collecting dust for ages. There were flags, but they were so tattered and stained (with something that looked like blood) that we couldn’t tell anything from it. I could almost imagine what the place must have been like. It was filled with history of the past.
After walking through the many pathways and staircases, I finally understood why no one bothered to clean it up. First of all, the location of this castle was really hidden and camouflaged—we only got here because of Aithne’s excellent navigation skills (Thanks a lot, Aithne). And even if they knew, I highly doubted anyone would be willing to come here— the skies never brightened up, and the atmosphere surrounding this place was cold, and unwelcoming. Thirdly, no one really knew much about this area. And when not much information is known, naturally, the area seems more terrifying. Adventurers and explorers probably did not come due to the second reason.
On the bright side, at least it didn’t smell. I thought as we walked through a small underground passage. Aithne and Astra were ahead of me, clearly annoyed with the lack of excitement around here, but I lagged behind them (Hey, it’s fascinating to explore a dusty old castle).
That was when I spotted the light. It was a faint beam of blue, barely visible, but it was there. It led out of a passage tucked deep in the shadows of a twisting, spiraling staircase.
“Aithne! Astra! Light!” I called out.
They froze mid-step, before rushing back to where I was. “Ooh,” Aithne grinned, “let’s follow it!”
We ran out into the garden, where there were multiple lakes with black slime in their waters. Aithne kept insisting that the lakes should be investigated first, but Astra refused, muttering something about light being the key to all things. And when Astra gets fixated on an idea, she can be really obstinate. Aithne’s protests were no match for Astra’s withering glare.
We followed the blue light, on, and on, and on...
… and arrived at a clearing, where a spectacular, resplendent flower— the size of a basketball— grew.
I gasped. It was the first sign of life ever since we entered the lifeless area. Its bright azure petals gleamed in the murkiness, almost like a symbol of hope. Aithne was about to reach out for the flower, almost as if she was in a trance, but Astra grabbed hold of her arm and whispered,
“Don’t! We don’t know anything about these flowers! What if it leads to danger? What if it has a curse? How will we get it off you then? None of us here know anything about curse-breaking spells!”
Aithne retreated her hand. We slowly took a step back from the flower. But its beauty was alluring and so magical. I continued to stare at the flower.
Suddenly, Astra shouted, summoning a shield immediately.
Aithne and I turned around. All I saw was a beast pouncing towards us.
A Cerberus beast.
Its paws hit the ground so hard, I covered my ears. Then, it transformed, taking form of a creature I couldn’t exactly put my finger on. Astra continued to bring more light together, encasing us all in a dome. Then she stepped out of the dome to face the creature.
It all happened so fast, Astra was out of the shield’s protection before I registered its presence.

I know it may be a bit late, but I hope you have/had a wonderful Story Teller Saturday, anyways. My question for you is what animal(s) are the most important to the culture(s) of your worlds and for what reasons?
Never too late, Ren! I did have a great STS, and I hope you did as well.
I’m so glad you ask this because I love the overbearing animal motifs I’ve worked up for The Calm Before. Let’s go one by one, shall we?
Wolves: This one is the most obvious because of the whole War Wolf aspect, which is a large chunk of the story’s premise. Rys is asked to step into the role of the War Wolf, an urban legend spun and made flesh by Queen Thirza Borswick as part of her play to become the First Kaiserin through victory in a Unity War. The thing that makes Rys so perfect for the role, which is designed for fearmongering, essentially, to entice allies and make those who would resist cow to Thirza, is that she’s Norsk, as the role was designed to be. The motivation here is threefold.
1)    The Norlanders are the go-to enemy for the whole of the empire and have been for a couple centuries now. The details of the schism have been largely forgotten to the annals of history and myth, but centuries back, the peaceful coexistence and mixing of the Norlanders and the imperial people ended very suddenly. The Norlanders withdrew beyond the mountain range known as the Gardr, back to their ancestral lands in the north, and instilled a policy of isolation, no longer conducting trade nor politics nor communicating outside their borders. Very few Norlanders elected to still dwell south of the Gardr, leading to a lasting – though dwindling – revenant that faced increasing distaste with every generation. Whatever the reason for the Norlanders’ and imperials’ sudden mutual ire, it smoldered over centuries of animosity which eventually turned to recurrent raids and border skirmishes. The Norsk people took on the role of boogeyman and scapegoat for the people of the empire. This ease of blame and belief in their collective amoral character makes the War Wolf less of a hero figure – that would give Rys too much power – and more subject to suspicion and derision as a fiend.
2)    The imperial people historically feared the Norlanders. They were always renowned as powerful, talented, and relentless warriors, and what was worse – they had magic in their blood. In ancient days, long before magic had been ripped from the world, the Norsk people were so favored by one of the spirit races indigenous to the Norlands that the spirits blessed them, bestowing a portion of their magic on their very being. Legend says a faint hum of that magic is still inside them, perhaps the only magic left to the human race, though they aren’t able to make it manifest. It does however seem to account for the slightly above average strength and resilience of the Norsk people – if you believe that sort of thing. Of course, this only stokes the fear and mistrust the imperials feel. During The Calm Before, Hale remarks that although people point to Norlanders as savages and say it’s their eyes or hair or cheekbones that mark them, he knows it’s really something deeper and intangible. Something that elicits prey instinct.
3)    Since the Norlanders are the empire’s longest standing enemy, having one – especially one portrayed as a kind of murderous demon that strikes fear into the people – on a leash is a statement of Thirza’s power. Despite the Norlanders’ apparent retreat, the imperials have never managed a defining victory over them. Subjugating someone as powerful and dreaded as the War Wolf is tantamount to conquering the Norlands themselves as a political statement. As an added bonus, the ‘monster on a leash’ character maintains an image of a Norsk villain, which distracts from any distasteful acts Thirza herself may commit for her ambitions.
Now, all of that to answer the question, why ‘War Wolf’? Wolves are a symbol of the Norlands, so to suit her purposes, Thirza had to choose a wolf. The Norsk people trace their most ancient history to a continent an ocean away to the north which they refer to as the Direlands. It was such an unforgiving environment that they led a mass exodus and discovered the Norlands. There they quickly forged a mutual respect for the native wolves and began adopting them into their lives. The Norlanders formed deep and spiritual bonds with wolves, and when it came to waging war, some wolves even went into battle with their chosen masters. These were, of course, the war wolves.
This was the image that burned itself into history and legend alike. This phenomenon and the fearful picture it struck on the battlefield became synonymous with the Norlands.
Bears: Though wolves are the image that stuck with the people of the empire, bears are also valued by the Norsk people. Wolves are of course a vital part of their history and culture – though there are relatively few relationships between wolves and Norlanders compared to in the past. Wolves represent their spirit in several ways, and they feel a kinship with them still. Bears, on the other hand, are a symbol of hearth and home for them. They represent family and quiet resilience, love and comfort. Idioms relating to bears have given rise to terms of endearment used in a romantic context.
Rooks: Rooks are the symbol of the kingdom of Evors. The monarch is even known as the Rook. The birds are known for being intelligent, able to work together and creatively solve problems, and for always returning home to their rookeries. Perhaps this is part of why they were chosen to grace the flags of the kingdom… or perhaps it was just that a lot of them live there.
Snakes: The Empire of Ouroboros – a land forever locked in an endless cycle of joining and breaking apart, never completely achieving either. The ouroboros is itself a symbol for eternal cycles, a snake devouring its own tail, so it was no surprise when it emerged as the emblem and namesake of the fractured empire. It is typically depicted in bronze, so when the Unity War is declared, it is embroidered around uniform sleeves in bronze.
These are the more prominent emblematic animals of TCB, but cultures rely on different animals for infrastructure and trade as well. Evors evolved from a fishing town which sprung up around the lake. A significant portion of the population of Hale’s home region is comprised of sheep farmers. In Qa’zura, a breed of smaller cattle are a primary beast of burden and family pet alike. (They’re definitely getting an animal symbol as well, with origins in a myth I just haven’t quite worked out yet…)
Thanks so much for the ask! It turned into such a long worldbuilding post, I decided to go ahead and tag my taglist for TCB. Just drop me a line if you’d like to be added or removed from said list!
