To pad more space on my Christmas list, let me ask something. Which of the Rick Riordan Presents books do you most recommend? Because I already own a bunch of them, but I haven't gotten around to reading them. And discounting the fact that COVID stopped my reading and that it means I already have like 10 books I've never read before cluttering up space, I still want to pad out my Christmas List. So, please tell me which of the books you most recommend, especially for someone like me (who likes comedy, mythology, middle grade fiction, and hates scary stuff). This might help me begin finally wrapping up the books portion of my Christmas list.

General mystery items/collections ideas for my dream Riordanverse unboxings
Weapons
Pins (and an armory themed pinboard or hanging)
Charms to go along with their hiding place (like a charm at the end of a pen for riptide or on a rune pendant for Jack/Sumarbrandr or on a bracelet for Serwa’s blade)
Stickers (and an armory themed sticker book)
Pens
Gods
Playing cards - 14 god cards for each pantheon to correspond with 2-10, J, Q, K, A and a joker/trickster card. And ideally similar gods would be in similar places, so Zeus and Odin might both be kings. Collecting four pantheons would allow you to play any regular 1 deck card game, but maybe having pantheons from similar areas (Greece and Rome, Mayan and Native American, Egyptian and Ghanaian, etc) be the same color would allow for mixing and matching or games where two decks are used, like five crowns. Or could play games like UNO. I once made a game like this for a camp I taught, so this one is close to my heart.
Trading cards with stats for a mythomagic type game across the pantheons
Pins (characters, or cabin sets representing each, or chariot or car, or train car representing them and their power)
Stationary set with quotes
Themed socks (this might be the part of me that wanted to make sock monkeys for each camp halfblood cabin)
Dice sets (Artemis dice on tic tok was doing a Norse mythology one as I was reading Magnus Chase)
Monsters/Enemies
Lenticular cards (many of them morph somehow with the mist)
Trading cards with stats for a mythomagic type game across the pantheons
Stickers! Or magnets/pins.
Tshirts of locations they work (monster donut!)
Plushies
Replicas
Coins (golden drachma, Mayan death/jaguar coin, etc)
Quest items
Prints
Blueprints of important locations
Maps
Family photos/friend or quest group photos in family portrait mode
‘Photos’ from locations or moments between combat
Menus from food places
Report cards or detention slips
Wanted posters
Scrapbook pages (to go with the prints, make your own demigod scrapbook - my inner middle schooler would have gone nuts to use this as a way to do a book reports - note to self, reading notebooks with book report type prompts!)
Lists of chapter titles
Demigods
Wanted poster pins or sticker sets
Pins with themes
Stickers with themes (I saw an awesome sticker set that had what each quest member had packed for a quest)
Famous quotes on bookmarks
Famous quotes as stickers
Detention slip notepads
Their own playing cards or trading cards with stats
Camps/training locations
Tshirts (beyond the usual camp halfblood/Jupiter, I also enjoy seeing the ones like Delphi strawberry farms!)
Lanyards
Maps
Other wearables, like backpacks/hats
Beads for a growing beaded necklace collection
Important locations/realms
Stickers and a 9-realms passport sticker book!
Fairy doors
Keys
Potions or potion ingredients
Runes as stickers (decorated with their meaning somehow)
Puzzles
Mugs or cups

Paola Santiago and the River of Tears by Tehlor Kay Mejia
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
“It’s not a silly whim to want to prevent suffering, it’s heroic.”
I found this book really interesting. It introduced me to a mythology I wasn't entirely familiar with beforehand, only knowing about a few stories from Mexican Folklore (La Llorona, El Chupacabra), so this book introduced me to a few more stories.
Paola Santiago and the River of Tears is a story about a 12-year-old girl and her 2 best friends, Dante and Emma. Paola is entirely space-obsessed and dying to test out her new telescope on the banks of the Gila River. The one problem is that all 3 kids have been warned about avoiding the river at all costs after a schoolmate drowned there the previous year. For Pao, she's been told to avoid the river for much longer. Growing up, her mom told her stories about La Llorona, a ghost woman who roams the banks, searching for children to drag into the depths of the river. On the night when Pao, Dante and Emma are supposed to test the telescope, Emma never shows up. Now, Paola thinks that maybe there's some truth behind her mom's stories.
As a kid I was absolutely obsessed with all of Rick Riordan's books, and seeing this was part of "Rick Riordan Presents" I had a good feeling about how I would feel about this story. Although I'm not a huge fan of fantasy novels, I found it pretty easy to get into this one. The pacing was steady and it didn't ever lose my interest or bore me.

No olviden estos nombres:
“Los policías fueron identificados como Giovanny Santiago Avilés, Roseanne Ruiz Cisneros, Félix Ahmed De Jesús Abreu, Luis Enrique Vélez Mari, Kelvin Omar Meléndez Monsegur y Paola M. Farías Santiago”
Nombre de los agentes 👇🏻

"Go toward the river," she said. "Take these." She shoved the lumpy crocheted bag into Pao's hands and snapped at her when she tried to open it. "There's no time. You only have five days to try and do the impossible. Go." (Paola Santiago and the River of Tears, Tehlor Kay Mejia, 2020)

What I Read in February 2023
Tumblr media
another surreal romp and hijinks
Tumblr media
most excellent, the characters felt real, neither utter paragons nor the #worst the plot was interesting.
Tumblr media
Cute, but I admit I’d have liked to see the boys parents actually react to meeting both of them and the ending felt a bit rushed.
Tumblr media
Come on Erza!
Also kitty Natsu 🤣
Tumblr media
Awww, all the kids are adorable and it looks like they’ll be offering healing to our main girl.
“the way of the true pot”
Tumblr media
I did feel sorry for Paola for distancing herself from one friend and another doing the distancing (then ouch with Dante). I did like the story but am uncertain what was wrong with her moms boyfriend besides her mom moving things a bit fast for Paola and then the guy just being dropped at the end of the book for reasons.

Tumblr media
Richard suffers so 😂😊also the gem stuff always has me looking things up. ^_^

finally got volume 5 so I could read 6-8 ^_^
Tumblr media

I'm going to try reading the library books soon, but first, I want to make a post giving my first impressions of the five books just based on summaries/synopses I found online and the book titles and stuff like that.
Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting: Idk how to feel here. For one thing, it's based on Ghanian folklore. I don't know too much about Ghana, besides that it's in West Africa and I've seen people from there on reality tv, and that my dad might work with someone from Ghana (which probably counts for nothing). So learning about a new culture sounds interesting. But also... vampire hunting. Usually not my cup of tea. I hated Blade and other vampire hunters in comics, because vampires are still sentient beings! They live, they feel, they have every right to live! Who are we to play god and decide to kill them!? Peaceful coexistence is the way, if it's possible! So... we'll see if my bias sneaks in.
Paola Santiago and the River of Tears: I do like mexican mythology (probably partially because there was that weird trend in animated films based on the day of the dead like Coco and The Book of Life, shortly before I fell off the animation and film/tv bandwagon). But also: this book is apparently based on the myth of La Llorona. And that's the story of a woman who killed her kids in a fit of rage, and who now cries for all time, bringing misfortune to all (according to wikipedia). So the fear is this will mess me up, and be too spooky.
Winston Chu vs the Whimsies: This one is apparently based on Chinese mythology, which is another area i'm not knowledgeable in. The synopsis made it sound supernatural too, but I don't know if it's supernatural in the mostly funny and charming way, or in the super spooky way. Still, this one is one of the two I have the most faith in.
Daughter of the Deep: Written by Rick Riordan, and apparently based on the writings of Jules Verne. So that's one plus and one minus. I don't like or care for Jules Verne, but I do tend to like rick Riordan. So I have some hope here.
Pahua and the Soul Stealer: This title alone sounds spooky. I pray it's not too spooky, because again, I have nerves so bad that too much fear would traumatize me. But I'm holding out hope, because this is apparently about the folktales of the Hmong. And the Hmong are an Asian ethnic group I never even knew existed, really. So maybe I'll learn some stuff? If I can see past the discomfort.
So I'll start with Winston Chu or the Daughter of the Deep today, probably. That's the two I have the most faith in. Following them is the Serwa Boateng book, probably.
