A Ted Cruz Ad Used This Man's Image For Anti-Trans Fearmongering. Now He's Speaking Out. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/mack-beggs-trans-wrestler-ads_n_67229f99e4b02f5ab1d212d8?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr

Yeah… no
Watch this video, then come back cause I need to add some important context they forgot
The wrestler in question is a trans boy, as in female to male, who was forced by Texas law to compete in the girls division
He is a year and a half on testosterone, as such, he requested to wrestle in the boys division multiple times, but was refused, so in an effort to get to wrestle he went to the girls
He had and undefeated season, and in turn started getting a ton of hate for being a boy in the girls division with people arguing “he should be on a different mat”
People filed lawsuits against the school for putting him in the girls division because they believe it unfair
He never spoke about the issue despite the media coverage, with his only comment being that he wanted to congratulate his teammates for working hard every day
He’s just a kid who wants to wrestle and people are being shitty for no reason

I never hear about Mack Beggs at all. Like I was introduced to him (as a far away concept, not actually) almost 5 years ago and despite him being a trans man in wrestling (with transphobic laws pushed directly at him), I have not once heard about him online or in the trans community since.
Here's just one article about him. There's a whole biopic about him from ESPN.

Mailer targeting Allred misrepresents trans wrestler’s story
A recent campaign mailer from the Texas GOP attacking Ted Cruz’s Senate challenger, Colin Allred, portrays a barely blurred out image of a transgender wrestler, hand raised in triumph. “Colin Allred failed to protect women’s sports, supporting boys competing with girls,” the text says.
But the athlete pictured, a transgender man named Mack Beggs, wanted to compete with boys.
The University Interscholastic League, which oversees sports in Texas public schools, requires athletes to compete according to the gender listed on their birth certificate.
Beggs was born a biological female and below-gan the transition when he was a teenager, taking level testosterone injections prescribed by a physician.
He was still transitioning when he competed in 2017 as a junior at Trinity High in Euless.
Despite public uproar and his plea to wrestle in the boys division, he was ordered to compete in the girls division.
The Cruz campaign declined to comment on the mailer.
The Texas GOP, which paid for the mailer, also did not respond.
Last year, Allred voted against a bill that would have prohibited school athletic programs from allowing transgender students whose biological sex at birth is male from participating in programs that are for women or girls.
The bill, which passed the House on a party-line vote but stalled in the Senate, did not address transgender students who were assigned female at birth but identify as male.
“What I have supported is basic protections for folks on the basis of their sexual identity, or who they love, or how they identify, and try to make sure that they aren’t discriminated against,” Allred told Spectrum News last week.
“I think that’s pretty basic, and I think that’s who we are as Texans.”

Hate to be the bubble burster, genuinely since some sports can absolutely be desegregated with few consequences, but the sex division is there for a good reason. It's been shown through multiple avenues that having higher testosterone levels increases athletic performance.
If there was 0 difference, there wouldn't be the universal ban on anabolic steroids(designed to mimic testosterone) in professional athletics. We wouldn't have the real life story of Mack Beggs; a trans boy in 2017 who had been taking testosterone and was forced to compete in the Texas State Women's Tournament. He promptly steamrolled every match like he was Baki Hanma.
The differences have been recorded on scale in the US Air Force, where trans servicemen and women after a year of respective HRT fell into line with their chosen gender. There were small discrepancies recorded(Trans Women still were slightly faster in their mile and Trans Men surprisingly FASTER than Cis Men), but ones that would have likely disappeared after 2 years or more.
Even if cis men and women had zero physical differences, women's league would likely still exist due to sociological and cultural factors impacting women's presence and enthusiasm for sports.
Women participate in less and perform on average worse in chess, despite testosterone not giving you any advantage in moving little pieces of wood on a board or clicking a mouse. There's a fascinating study where women being told or not told their opponent's gender in online chess impacted their performance noticably. Women acted less aggressively against a known male opponent, winning 1 in 4 games, and having an average win rate when they were told they were female, even if the opponent was actually male.
God, anyone else remember when everyone understood that the correct feminist position about sports was that women should be allowed to compete with men because they're just as capable? When it was a trope in media to have the mysterious star athlete who just blew everyone else out of the water to take off her helmet and reveal that she was a woman the whole time?
Now people are rabidly arguing that supposed "men" (trans women) have inherent insurmountable biological advantages and cis women are too weak and dainty and unskilled to ever compete and must be protected, and then they try to call themselves feminists who are being silenced as if that's not just the mainstream sexist patriarchal opinion
Anyway, desegregate sports. There was never any reason to separate them by gender in the first place
#Trans woman BTW so don't try it#I was 5'6 120 Lbs in high school cross country I was a Manlet:tm:#I would get smoked by the top boys but could keep pace with a good chunk of the top girls#It's really funny to see people use media tropes to justify their a wacky sort of faux-progressivism where you ignore all evidence#Don't listen to TERFs who talk about fucking bone density and hip angles but also don't ignore real science and issues

Trans people in pro wrestling and other sports
So, I’ve had a really on and off history with sports. Being a trans guy didn’t help that. Even though I was 12 when I came out, consistently throughout school I had to continue doing sports with the girls.
We did field hockey and netball (which I hated), when the other guys got to do rugby, like my older brother. I really wanted to try it, but I was never allowed. I used to do swimming, until I got injured, and then got my hair cut short just before I came back to swimming, and had to stop going because I kept getting funny looks in the changing rooms.
A few years ago I discovered yoga (especially this vid), which I’ve been really enjoying doing in my own time, especially during the pandemic, and, unexpectedly, getting better at it. This video has also helped me get into calisthenics, which look frickin amazing.
But the pandemic also gave me time to procrastinate from schoolwork to discover pro wrestling and get obsessed with it. I love the deathmatches, they look cool af, but my favourites are tag matches. I love a good tag team- Eddie Kingston and Jon Moxley, William Regal and Eugene, Death Triangle, The Golden Lovers. Wherever there’s chemistry between the performers, I’m absolutely sold.
I kinda came to the realisation that I really wanted to give pro wrestling a try, and discovered Simon Miller, who is an absolute godsend, but there have never been any out trans men in wrestling before, which is just sending me absolutely around the bend.
There are a few trans women in pro wrestling, like Sonny Kiss, Nyla Rose, Mariah Moreno, Gabby Tuft and Edith Surreal, who have been making waves and changing the game for years, and Mack Beggs is a trans masc amateur wrestler from Texas who has been advocating for trans rights in sports since he was a teenager, whilst he was busy winning the state championship 2 years in a row. What an amazing band of people.
This article written by Paul Heyman as one of the biggest and influential Jewish people in the world of pro wrestling really showed me that people have been making waves and trying to make space for more ‘outsiders’ in the world of pro wrestling for years, I’m so glad all these people have been sharing their stories and making the world a more accepting place.
But I’m still so worried about the hypermasculinity of the environment, all those jacked cis white dudes pure gawping at the state of me. I’m not ready to try out yet, but even so, I can’t image they’d take very well to a short, underexperienced, dickless, less-than-soyboy like me. I’m sure some of them would be lovely, but like, can you imagine somebody like Brock Lesnar watching somebody like me sauntering into the gym and pick up some dumbells for a few reps? I’ll just have to be brave and find out what’ll happen, but goddamn have I got a long journey ahead of me if I want to take this on.

was looking through the mack beggs tag here on tumblr and saw a post with an ask that was like “hey can you provide examples of trans women in sports”
and saw them provide the following:
Mack Beggs, 17, was born a girl and reportedly began identifying as a boy at the age of 3. Though Beggs underwent testosterone treatments for more than a year and had the muscle mass of a teenage boy, Beggs competed and took first place in the University Interscholastic League state girls’ championship on Feb. 25, 2016.
and i just…i’m sorry, this is so fucking dishonest for a lot of reasons:
beggs is a trans man, not a trans woman; and
beggs did not have a goddamn choice which team he competed on. he apparently legally had to compete against women by virtue of his assigned gender at birth.
poor kid just wanted to fucking wrestle, and got booed and jeered because being a trans boy on T forced to wrestle against cis girls because he’s not allowed to participate against women, and then using him as an example of trans women participating against cis women, is just…

Remember the Mack Beggs story? The trans boy who was forced to compete against cis girls?
I’m googling that, and found lots of reactions from conservatives, they were all “SJWs just want to hurt women! forcing females to compete against males!!” Like, they got the story completely backwards and it’s kinda funny

Congratulations, Mack! Congrats for moving forward and not letting a ridiculous policy or the unsupportive and judgmental commentary keep you from the sport you love.
It saddens me to read that Mack was booed when awarded his medal. This notion that the low-dose of testosterone that he is on is why he is winning is harmful and ridiculous. I have testosterone running through my body, and every one of the wrestlers could kick my a**.
A low-dose of testosterone does not cause a win. Skill and practice is what has led to what Mack has accomplished.
Good luck in college and on the men’s team next year! Your bravery and visibility will (and has) inspire(d) others.

Not many people will see it and I don’t want to keep looking at the notes on trans man wrestler Mack Beggs' win post cuz they're making me mad Trans men are not "put on way more testosterone" than cis men. We are put on the same amount/range. Testosterone is not a steroid. Testosterone doesn't count as a performance enhancing drug when administered legally for another medical purpose. (He had gotten approval two years prior for wrestling while on T for this reason) So to all you transphobes who want him to disappear, shut the fuck up
