Lisa Miskovsky släpper nya singeln Drömmen den 24 januari och utannonserar sista delen av albumet Eljest som släpps 6 mars Lisa Miskovsky fortsätter skriva på svenska och följer upp fjolårets succé-EP Eljest med nya singeln Drömmen, som släpps den 24 januari via Despotz Records. Singelsläppet markerar inte bara ett nytt musikaliskt kapitel, utan också en spännande försmak på den sista delen av albumet Eljest, som landar den 6 mars. Med Drömmen tar Lisa ännu ett steg i sin musikaliska utveckling och bygger vidare på den intima, ärliga känsla som genomsyrade Eljest EP:n. Låten bär på en drömsk och emotionell tyngd där Lisa fortsätter att utforska sina inre landskap genom svenska texter. ”För mig handlar den om att försöka förstå sin plats i en nära relation. Ibland har man tilldelats en roll man växt ifrån och de runt om en kanske inte förstår att man formats till någon annan…ändå så får man fortsatt samma roll att spela trots att man är på en helt annan plats som människa. 

Det kan vara smärtsamt, då får man försöka hitta stöd och kraft där man är sedd som den person man känner att man blivit. Jag har själv gjort det misstaget och försöker också förstå förändring och respektera den. Att hitta rätt och ta vara på stunder man kan landa i, blir ett viktigt sätt att hitta kraften igen.”, säger Lisa

Redan 2023 startade Lisa den här resan i form av den svenskspråkiga EP-utgåvan av Eljest. På EP:n samarbetade Lisa bland annat med den prisade textförfattaren Annika Norlin (Säkert, Hello Saferide). Hon förklarade då valet att skriva på svenska så här:

– ”Iklädd i det svenska språket har jag valt att färdas mellan olika platser som har färgat mig. Platserna blir till människor, som blir relationer jag försöker försonas med... men också om att våga släppa taget om en plats man alltid bott på, att ge sig iväg mot något nytt.” I samband med att Lisa släppte de första låtarna på svenska turnerade Lisa på ett nytt sätt- med konsertföreställningen Eljest där Lisa bjuder på anekdoter från den egna uppväxten med ett personligt bildspel. 

Med Eljest markerade Lisa en tydlig vändpunkt i sin musikaliska karriär. Den svenskspråkiga EP:n blev en slags självrannsakan och ett sätt att bearbeta de känslor och erfarenheter som genomsyrade hennes liv. Musiken var både intim och personlig, där textens djup och uttryckskraft gav en ny dimension till hennes redan etablerade ljudvärld.

Lisas resa, både musikaliskt och känslomässigt, speglas i de lyriska teman som genomsyrar Eljest. Det handlar om att möta sig själv i spegeln och förstå sina rötter, samtidigt som hon reflekterar över de förändringar som är oundvikliga när man ger sig ut på okända vägar.

Temat på Eljest och de turnéer som följde på EPn är uppbygd kring känslan av att vara den udda fågeln – lite eljest - med två olika kulturer från andra länder i ryggen. Rollspelsnörden som både sportade och spelade musik, men som alltid stod lite utanför gruppen. Lisa berättar vidare - ”Ordet eljest älskade jag första gången jag fick höra det.. Eljest är ett så varmt och mjukt ord för att vara annorlunda, när man beskriver en människa.. men inte en beskrivning om annorlunda som något negativt utan att det är mer en omfamning, det är okej att få vara där i periferin. "

Platinasäljande Lisa Miskovsky är en av musiksveriges absolut mest etablerade artister och låtskrivare. Hon har sålt över 200 000 album, vunnit två Grammisar, erhållit fem Rockbjörnar och har, utöver sitt eget artisteri, haft stora framgångar som låtskrivare åt andra och varit en del av tonvis med samarbeten i alla möjliga och omöjliga sammanhang. Till exempel är Lisa låtskrivare på Backstreet Boys världshit ”Shape of My Heart” och har skapat musik med stora namn så som Max Martin, Rami Yacoub och Joakim Berg för att nämna några. Lisa har även skrivit ledmotivet 'Still Alive' till tv-spelet 'Mirrors Edge's' soundtrack (EA/DICE) som även släpptes som remixalbum där Miskovskys originalversion var med tillsammans med remixer av Benny Benassi, Junkie XL, Paul van Dyk, Armand Van Helden och Teddybears. I hennes sommarprat i Sommar i P1 2019 fick lyssnarna lära känna inte bara artisten och snowboardåkaren, utan också mamman Lisa Miskovsky. Naturen har alltid varit viktig för Lisa, som, inte minst under pandemin, har hämtat mycket kraft från den västerbottniska myllan. Technically the very first clone I made, but she wasn't anywhere near as developed when I played MTAP dkrjdkjrjjf Since Portia's story is comparatively a lot milder in terms of stakes, I think she'd make the best clone to take part in MTAE's story, whatever that ends up being! I'm planning to make another portrait of her for what she looks like going into MTAE, though that'll have to come later.....idk what exactly she'll look like down the line 😂

Story:

The short version:

Wis’s absent father bequeathed his old Portian workshop to her, while she was being raised by her Aunt Kendra in Barnarock. All throughout her teenage years, her resentment for her father festered. She was hesitant to take up an inheritance from her father of all people, but her desire to be somewhere other than Barnarock outweighed her grudge against him. Just for a moment.

While outwardly polite and helpful, her lingering bitterness leads her to be quite isolated from the rest of the townsfolk for a while, even though they were truly grateful for her help in developing the town, and were curious to know her better.

Surprisingly, it was the antics of Higgins that first drew her out of her shell a little bit. He was just so comically disdainful of her that it was funny to talk to him just to prod him a little bit. They would eventually become the most steadfast of friends.

The other person that helped her open up was the mild and somewhat meek Dr. Xu. He saw Wis and right away saw someone in need of help. With her inexperience in building, Wis found herself at the clinic a lot, getting patched up for injuries. They formed a tenuous friendship that way, helped along by Phyllis and the Civil Corps crew, and that gradually blossomed into a soft, cautious, but very fulfilling romance.

Now, she sets her sights on Settlement 2, the events of lategame MTAP spurring a sudden thirst for adventure (perhaps supplemented by a hidden hint of jealousy...?). She and Xu move out to seek yet another horizon, keeping in touch with all the friends they made in Portia, proving that you don't need to abandon your loved ones just for the sake of adventure.

Casual Lurker Spills The Amazon Beans

Note: Casual Lurker posted the following as a comment to this post, because he reads SJ in spurts, invariably far behind most people, and then leaves long, prolix comments that are occasionally fascinating but, as I’ve told him, tend to more like private conversations between us since others have long since moved on to more recent posts. Much as he can be a huge pain in the ass, he’s too damn smart for his own good, and really should get his priorities straight and put SJ ahead of his work, his family and his health, so other readers can timely benefit from his comments.

Anyway, his comment was good enough to be a stand alone “guest” post, not to mention was longer than my original post, so I post it here without editing or revision. Just wait until he finds out about this post. Heh.]

Rumors of my demise are… yada, yada yada…

As usual, things are far more complicated than anyone, except the actual negotiating parties involved in drafting the initial Amazon MOU realizes, and so the pols, the media, Etc., all liberally dole out the BS, slanting it toward their respective agendas.

When the dust settles, I suspect they will be replacing Donald Manes name in the old ‘screwed Queens’ gag.

Just prior to the deal’s collapse, at a meeting in City Hall, some off-the-cuff remarks were made by some local lawmakers, within earshot of anyone in the room. The gist of those remarks is that they thought the process was sufficiently far along, where Amazon would not dare pick up their marbles and leave, thus giving the pols more leverage. The pols were playing a game of ‘Chicken’ and they lost. The unions also had a hand in this, as they were putting pressure on city and state lawmakers (other than the Gov. and Hizzoner) to extract additional concessions or suffer the consequences. (The unions in this town have an outsize influence on elections).

One of the main sticking points, given only cursory media coverage, was a demand that new hires only come from within NYC. Amazon said “are you kidding?” While I suspect it was only an opening bid by those making the demand and they were willing to expand to Long Island and Westchester, as a sizable percentage of the jobs created were going to require folks with advanced STEM degrees, several years of experience, and a proven track record of achievement, Amazon was not willing to limit its hiring pool to a narrow region of NY.

After the Dec. 12, 2018 City Council hearing,* that I was (purely by happenstance) present at, I had a good sense that the political theater on display was just the beginning. However, I didn’t think council members, along with their state allies, would go so far as to kill the deal.

While everyone knew Gov. Cuomo and Hizzoner, Comrade de Lousy-O, had a hand in the deal, it was primarily the EDC** that did the math, structured the deal, and drafted the MOU that Amazon agreed to. At that hearing, it was EDC’s rep’ that acted as Amazon’s counsel.

Moreover, the EDC had made non-binding assurances to various “non-parties with interest”, but did not make the MOU available to them. Unfortunately, the “non-parties with interest” made several incorrect assumptions about what was in the MOU.

For the most part, Black Bellamy has it right: State Sen. Michael Gianaris (with prodding from Deputy Council Leader James Van Bramer) is one of the main architects for killing the deal.

As an aside, it annoyed the heck out of me when Van Bramer kept repeating how “Bezos is the richest man in the world and can afford to accommodate workers and area residents”, conveniently ignoring that Amazon is a publicly traded company, with a fiduciary responsibility to shareholders.

But make no mistake: There’s going to be blowback. Local lawmakers are already getting an earful from voters who were in favor of the Amazon deal. In spite of the spin they’ve been trying to publicly put on the deal’s collapse, with the exception of the completely clueless, like AOC, several pols are carrying an extra change of underwear in their attaché cases, in anticipation of said blowback.

Fact is, NYC needed Amazon more than Amazon needed NYC. The pols came with a laundry list, and when Amazon wouldn’t give them everything they wanted, they said “we’ll show ’em how NY does business!” However, Amazon has to remain competitive and therefore cities have to remain competitive. Amazon isn’t here to subsidize your socialist dreams. The pols kept saying “look at all of what NYC is giving you”. Amazon didn’t see it that way. The pols overplayed their hand.

Now, any business that was considering opening a NY office is reconsidering that idea, as they experience Amazon’s bitter aftertaste by proxy. Some have jokingly referred to this effect as “Bismarck’s Hammer”:

“Fools you are… to say you learn by your experience…. I prefer to profit by others’ mistakes and avoid the price of my own.”

At present, NYC is largely a service economy. And with the exception of the financial sector and tourism, it brings in comparatively few outside dollars. Other than the EDC, very few have done the math. And noticeably absent from all the speeches and posturing are actual dollar amounts, as those numbers don’t favor the progressive narrative. Even conservative estimates say the capital influx would have been a big plus to the local economy, and not just in the short term.

As to public transit and the subways, in spite Politico’s cheap shot,*** Gov. Cuomo gave an excellent presentation at the Albany Luncheon on Feb. 7, largely covering the MTA and the NYCTA. The Gov. laid out some scary numbers and some surprising facts. (A few years back the state was picking up less than 25% of the NYCTA’s $8B+ annual budget, and now the numbers are reversed). BTW, Amazon had agreed to pick up part of the tab for improving the transit infrastructure in the area surrounding the planned HQ2. Nobody is mentioning that.

**Economic Development Corp. For those outside of NY, the NYC EDC is a quasi-governmental, non-profit entity, parts of which are a “public-benefit corporation” under NY law. It operates similar to the various NY State “Authorities”. (e.g., the NYS Thruway Authority, the School Construction Authority, Etc.) Because it can borrow money, float bonds, Etc., it largely remains outside of the usual legislative (but not executive) oversight. The reasons are long and complicated, but the various “Authorities” were created primarily as a means to circumvent the NY State constitution’s economic provisions, many of which require voter approval. The catch is that the veil between the city/state and the “Authorities” can be pierced if the city/state becomes too hands-on. (So sayeth the corporation counsel).
