My favourite iteration of a supportive Lan Qiren in fanfictions is when it can be boiled down to: Lan Wangji walks into Lan Qiren's room one day and stares at him blankly for a few moments, before raising his arm. Upon his arm, is an enthusiastic Wei Wuxian, clinging to it with all four limbs and a feral grin (this is exaggerated in Lan Qiren's eyes). "I want to keep him." Lan Wangji says calmly, waving around the parasite latched onto his arm. "Are you sure? I'm quite sure he's got rabies." Lan Qiren responds doubtfully. Lan Wangji nods. Lan Qiren sighs, placing his head in his hands - why oh why could his nephews not have better taste in men? - before waving away the man. "Very well, but you have to take him out on walks every day." "Mn." "Even when it rains." "Mn." And that's it.

another goofy mdzs drawing i did not too long ago but this one has context plssss
basically me and my friend came up with a wangxian au where wei wuxian works at arby’s and is like a famous influencer who posts about his daily work there and has a huge following of people and one if his said followers is none other than lan zhan 😭☠️ he fr makes it his mission to meet wwx cause he rlly likes him and even tho he doesn’t like arbys he goes just to see him
me and my friend weren’t sure if in the story lwj would be like a infamous food critic or if he would just be a random like famous guy 😭 LMAOO PLSSSSS THIS STARTED AS A JOKE AND THEN

Happy Fanfiction Writers Apprication Day! Every year, @renegadeguild hosts an event encouraging its members to bind fics and send them to their authors. This year I couldn't pick just one story and so tackled the challenge of binding 3 stories for 4 people! Of these were:
And Time is but a Paper Moon for Sami and @kisahawklin
'Til Our Compass Stands Still for @edenwolfie
Never Forget, Never Forgive for @artingstarvist
These are all wonderful works! I was so pleased with the outcome and getting to send them off to their authors. Thank you to the amazing authors who made these binds possible!

WWX thinking LWJ was possessed in this picture because he didn’t push him away is funny because……the pot is calling the kettle black.

Dear MDZS fanfic writers,
WWX is talented. He is a genius. He is a prodigy who invents and creates. Why not write that?
So why do so many fics have to have LWJ always with a “better” job (if he’s a doctor, then WWX must be a nurse; LWJ is famous, WWX must be unsuccessful and struggling; LWJ is a CEO, WWX must be a secretary).
I prefer when their careers aren’t in the same field or they have equivalent status, but those fics are rarer.
I have only ever read one fic where WWX would be considered to have a “higher” job and it’s my fic (go me, haha). And the stratification is literally nothing compared to the examples above. (CEO v CFO of differing companies)
It’s the same reason if I see a duel or contest in a fic, I’ll skim to see who wins because, man, fanfic writers have problems with WWX ever beating out LWJ. If LWJ wins, then I back out of the fic. Maybe unfair but I’ve never read a fic where LWJ wins and WWX is actually portrayed as competent or capable of beating LWJ. It’s usually far opposite where WWX would never beat LWJ.
If a fanfic has them tie or WWX wins, then more often than not, the fic will portray them as equals.
I wonder if it’s the type of fan writing. Like fans of canon WWX or who love Wangxian equally are more willing to portray them as the equals depicted in the books.
All in all, it just means I have to write what I want to read. The tragedy.

Someone most likely already said this but,
If I don't remember wrong Wei Wuxian is tan (if i'm not mistaken he is described as sun kissed in the novel, in the extra chapters). He was raised in Lotus Pier so it makes sense, as he spends most of his time outside, swimming, training. He would be quite tan I think.
But then when he is thrown into the burial mounds, he comes out sickly pale, like one of his ghosts, deadly skinny, hair dirty and no longer in a high ponytail. He doesn't need it anymore, he can't even use Suibian anyways, his hair won't bother him anymore.
When he reincarnates in Mo Xuanyu, he's pale and more delicate, as Mo Xuanyu did keep good care of his physical appearance. But I like to think that Wei Wuxian keeps his old bad habits, he's been dead for so long, who even cares?
But oh, when he starts living with Lan Wangji, he starts getting his tan back from their adventures outside. From training with the juniors, his hair is healthier because Lan Zhan takes care of it. He washes it and oils it, brushes it while Wei Ying tells him about his day.
I'm a firm believer that he does build is golden core again and gets his face appearance back. His height can't change, but his body would build muscle again. His tan would be glowing, his eyes would change to their original colour and his face would end up looking like original Wei Wuxian.
And although his new body doesn't carry his old scars, every night Lan Wangji would worship his body. Kiss where every one of them used to be, the scars from Zidian, old dog bites, every and each inch of his skin. Because the world might not remember, but Wangji does. So does Wei Ying, carrying all the trauma from his past life into the new one. But no longer alone to bear it, his soulmate is there now. And will always be. For the rest of eternity, as they both became immortal cultivators.

One afternoon while Wei Ying is preparing dinner, A-Yuan looks up from his toy trucks and asks, “Baba, how comes lots of people in my class have a mom, but I don’t?”
Wei Ying’s hands falter at the chopping board. “Every family is different,” he explains carefully. “One mom, two moms, one dad, two dads. There’s loads of options.”
“But who decides?”
“What do you mean, baobei?” Wei Ying asks.
A-Yuan looks at him like he’s being silly. “Who decides who gets one baba, or two babas, or ten babas?”
Wei Ying laughs. He’s relieved A-Yuan only seems curious and isn’t upset. “Well, grown ups usually decide if they want a husband or a wife. And then they have baby radishes together.” He gives A-Yuan’s nose a gentle poke, making the boy giggle. “But some people like me decide to do it alone.” His explanation is probably not the best, but A-Yuan’s questions have admittedly taken him by surprise.
“So grown ups can have a husband or a wife…” A-Yuan holds up two sticky fingers to demonstrate. “And Baba still doesn’t have anyone?”
“I—” Wei Ying is gobsmacked. He stares at A-Yuan with his mouth agape. A-Yuan looks at him expectantly, like he’s waiting to hear an explanation as to why his Baba is incapable of finding love. Wei Ying quickly turns away and starts plating out their food. “Dinner’s ready.”
“Aunty Yanli said—”
“Eat up, baby.” Wei Ying grins wide and feeds A-Yuan a mouthful of rice, effectively shutting him up. And that’s the end of that.
Or so he thinks.
The next morning on the school playground, A-Yuan escapes from Wei Ying’s hold the second he spots Lan Jingyi, running into his friend’s arms like they’ve been separated for years. They see each other every weekday, and sometimes on the weekends too.
Wei Ying laughs and spots Jingyi’s dad looking similarly amused. The sun is out today and Lan Zhan’s pretty eyes sparkle in the sunlight. He’s utterly breathtaking. Wei Ying's heartbeat still stutters every time they see each other, and they see each other almost every day. It’s humiliating, really.
“Good morning, Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan greets, voice as rich and low as ever.
“Morning, Lan Zhan.” Wei Ying gives him a big, beaming grin. “How was your weekend without us?”
Lan Zhan doesn’t quite smile, but there’s laughter in his eyes. “Messy. Jingyi got into—”
“Mr Lan! Mr Lan!” A-Yuan runs back over and attaches himself to Lan Zhan’s leg like a limpet, creasing up his neatly ironed slacks.
“Yes, A-Yuan?” Lan Zhan’s hand instinctively goes to A-Yuan’s head, patting it like he does his own son’s.
“Baba needs a husband, Mr Lan,” A-Yuan says.
Wei Ying’s blood runs cold, his whole life flashing before his eyes. “A-Yuan, no—!” he splutters, trying to get the boy to stop.
But A-Yuan forges ahead without a care, voice filled with glee. “Can you marry my Baba please, Mr Lan? Then me and Jingyi can be real, actual brothers and be together forever! And then— And then we can all live happily ever after!”
“That’s enough, A-Yuan!” Wei Ying exclaims. His body feels like it’s on fire and he can hear the blood rushing in his ears. He crouches down to be at eye level with A-Yuan, despite the shakiness of his legs. “Remember what we said about thinking before we speak?”
“Ummm… that we should think before we speak?” A-Yuan blinks his innocent doe eyes up at him like he hasn’t just ruined Wei Ying’s life.
“Exactly,” Wei Ying sighs. But he doesn’t have it in him to get upset or annoyed with his son. “It’s time for you to head into class. Your teacher’s waiting for you.” He kisses A-Yuan on the forehead. “Bye bye, radish. Love you.”
“Bye bye, Baba! Love you too!” A-Yuan gives him a fat, slobbery kiss right back and then skips off to his classroom, hand in hand with Jingyi.
Wei Ying grits his teeth and slowly stands back up. Time to face the music. “I’m so sorry, Lan Zhan. I promise I didn’t put him up to it.” He doesn’t quite have the courage to meet Lan Zhan’s eyes. “He’s been asking questions about families and moms and dads and I don’t know, maybe I didn’t explain things properly. I’m so sorry, Lan Zhan.”
“No need to apologise,” Lan Zhan tells him.
“No, but there is!” Wei Ying insists. “Tell me how I can make it up to you?”
When there’s no response, Wei Ying braces himself and hesitantly looks up. Only to find that for some strange, inexplicable reason, Lan Zhan is smiling. “Let me take you out to dinner, Wei Ying.”
“What?!”
“A date,” Lan Zhan explains, like it isn’t clear enough already. “To make it up to me.”
“But Lan Zhan, I— You—” It seems that all Wei Ying is capable of today is sputtering and making a fool of himself.
Lan Zhan steps closer, still with that amused glint in his eyes, and gently brushes away a strand of hair that’s blown into Wei Ying’s face. “Don’t you want to live happily ever after, Wei Ying?” he asks.
Wei Ying feels like he’s died and gone straight to heaven.

As I learn more and more about the characterization of mdzs, the harder it is to enjoy fanfics. As someone who entered the fandom through 'The Untamed', I have never liked JC but I was more willing to indulge the good bro JC. Then I read the book and I just can't with those types of fics (excluding fics that tell you he's ooc, then I might). It is the same with the way people write WWX to be this self-pitying, depressed fuck up. He doesn't have a hero complex, he's not depressed, he's not self-pitying, he is not impulsive or oblivious or stupid. It may be just a story but fanfiction is the place we go to, to drop a character in a situation and see how they navigate with their personality and morals. When you misrepresent a character, it takes away from the true essence of that. This is, obviously, not including stories where the characters are ooc or you purposely change something about them. I just get so excited over a plot for a fic and then I'm disappointed because the portrayal of the characters are just off. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Anyway, enough of my blabbering.

Okay… but.. but hear me out.
Heavenly calamities, sometimes known as tribulations, are encountered at key points in someone’s cultivation. If a person passes their calamity, they can ascend as a god.
Calamities usually (but not always) involve powerful storms, and from what we’ve seen do not actually have anything to with someone’s spiritual energy, as seen by Hua Cheng who was extremely weak and also dead when he faced his.
Wei Wuxian gave up his core for his brother, was captured and tortured by Wen Chao, and then pushed into the burial mounds surrounded by resentful energy where he fought for three months against zombies while dehydrated and starving.
I’m just saying, this could absolutely have been a heavenly calamity and since he survived, Wei Wuxian could have ascended.
Wouldn’t a god!Wei Wuxian au be so deliciously angst ridden?? Wouldn’t it be such sweetly bitter sorrow to watch as he has to watch from afar as his loved ones are subjugated and slain.
God’s aren’t allowed to interfere in mortal affairs. It’s just such a shame he’s never been one to break a single rule in his life, isn’t it??

Crow!Xian except it's a modern cultivation au where Wei Wuxian is cursed to be a crow and he spends it hanging out on Lan Wangji's balcony cawing and shouting to get his attention and save him.
lwj just trying to enjoy his morning tea on the balcony and crow!wwx screeching at him and so lwj gives him one of his biscuits and crow!wwx just looks into the camera like this wasn't what i wanted but i mean i will take it i guess and eats the biscuits happily as lwj just watches him.
he sneaks in one day because crow!wwx is smart enough to figure out how to open a sliding door and uses paint to paint the entire room and write I AM WEI YING but crows don't have the best hand eye coordination so when lwj sees it he's just like "pretty drawing crow friend" with a polite head pat that makes crow!wwx screech but also he likes it
lwj eventually figures it out when crow!wwx caws the notes to wangxian and even in the horrible screechy noise thats still somehow in tune, lwj recognizes immeadiately and is like "that crow is my wei ying."
he tries true love's kiss and like gives him a peck on the beak but it's doesn't work and crow!wwx is all huffy because his first kiss with lwj is as a crow and isnt that unfair.
(eventually they figure out the array and get him back to normal and have lots of make up kisses but every once in a while when wwx burps it comes out like a crow's caw and he jumps. lwj thinks it's cute and gives him more biscuits and kisses)

Every modern AU that brings up Wei Wuxian's Halloween birthday does it with a collage-style Halloween rager.
But you know
You KNOW
if he grew up in the Jiang household
Wei Wuxian stayed home hanging out candy to other kids on his birthday. And he wasn't supposed to like it. but he did.
